The first reply after that post pretty much explains it completely…

They do not come from Black Lion Chests. They only came from the Wintersday Mystery Boxes. Those boxes were only available during the first Wintersday.

So… wait until the next Wintersday?

Except there’s no guarantee those boxes will be back next Wintersday, given that they weren’t present at the last one.

If it was subscription then I’d be right there with you. I still shudder at how I thought about “wasting time” whenever I was standing still in a sub game. But maybe cheer your fellow Pavilioneers on, or go do some Gauntlet.

I don’t really have any hard answers. I guess its just down to how an individual player feels about it. I also just stand around after the Flying Dollys when I could actually be hunting down more crystals. There’s players in this game that like to stand around and chat so….who knows?

Doing the gauntlet reset my credit for the events as if I’d left the zone and I didn’t get a chest for it, so that’s a no-go. Also, time is wasted just as easily in a BTP game as it is in a sub game. Time as a currency is different than money. Related, but not exactly the same.

It’s flat out boring and bad design to discourage people from doing ANYTHING in a place devoted to one event. I mean, at least in Labyrinthine Cliffs there are other things to DO. Even getting too close to an event can scale up the boss fights in the Pavilion.

Yep. More bad design. It’s not enough that I have to leave the fight and beg other players to leave the fight (being punished for wanting to actually do something), but to sit there doing nothing for over an hour today felt like an enormous waste of time. Even with the improved loot, how is it ever a good idea to promote boredom for the people who want to do the event as it was meant to be done? I got silver once (maybe twice), and that was before the update.

This event is just bad. It should be noted that fighting in the gauntlet is considered leaving the zone and it resets your credit with the event, so literally the only thing to do is just afk and hope people sort it out eventually.

Any open world content that discourages vast portions of the zone from participating actively in that content is bad design. Period. If they want small groups, the event should facilitate that. People should not be punished with lesser rewards because they wanted to participate.

There’s no punishment for wanting to participate.
There’s not even punishment for clumping up, you take X time and get Y rewards.
Only, if you then improve your play and organize, you get Y*4 rewards in X/5 time, 20 times the efficiency. You’d think that’d be enough reason for pretty much everyone to be curious how to do it right (Especially because it’s still only AA-combat + the occasional dodge).

The one real issue is how bad the UI for the event is. It also means players have to hear from other players how to do the event properly, which means the first time anyone is there they’ll contribute to lesser rewards for everyone (and yes, that is really bad design).
If the UI told you that splitting up evenly is the key to victory, and showed all HP bars and how many players are at each boss, then this’d be much less obtuse for the average newcomer.

But really, there’s absolutely no punishment for participating. There’s extra rewards for playing smart instead of brainless, which is what we constantly ask of ANet (well actually we ask them to more or less remove zerging, but they instead do it via softer reward scaling, even if the scale is kinda harsh in this case).

I agree that the UI should be improved to facilitate this event, but I still say that the game is punishing people who want to participate in the fighting. Not only that, but it’s not just the people who want to join in the fights getting punished, it’s the people desperately trying to explain that going to “help” with a boss is actually not at all helpful. Even ten people not listening to map can make the entire zone suffer. Explain to me how that’s not punitive.

This isn’t about playing “smart.” It’s about being responsible for how 90 random people choose to play the event.

Did it twice with TxS yesterday – and they stayed at it – and the income is really really good. It just needs to be organized. The short downtime in-between also gives ample time to grab a drink or fool around a bit, while the fights are relaxed enough to allow chatting on TS.

Really, I understand the players who wanted to go there solo and run around AA-farming for crafting mats are angry the place is no longer farming heaven, but I don’t think the basic design is bad. The UI representation is pretty shoddy, granted. It’s missing:

  • A way to see the HP of all bosses, anywhere in the zone.
  • A way to see the number of players at each boss, anywhere in the zone.

Any open world content that discourages vast portions of the zone from participating actively in that content is bad design. Period. If they want small groups, the event should facilitate that. People should not be punished with lesser rewards because they wanted to participate.

Your first idea is exactly what world bosses are now. If you look up the schedule, you can follow the world boss train around for a sense of community.

That is not community. Before you argue it, know that I run one almost every night with my guild. We even include champs that aren’t on timer, like Fire Shaman, into the mix. I would call it a farming event – but not a “sense of community”. I suppose we just have different definitions on what community means.

It’s exactly the same level of community that was previously present in the Queensdale champ train, except everyone knows exactly when each boss spawns and none of them overlap.

That’s a joke, right? QD champ train was your poster child for GW2 community?

No. That was my point. The original post in this thread touts Queensdale as the epitome of what community was, and the ideas were looking for ways to replace that sense of community. So when you said that the world boss zerg didn’t provide any sense of community, I was pointing out that neither did Queensdale.

In Open-World content, it is just counter-intuitive to be telling people to get away from the bosses. If this were instanced content where the teams could be controlled and the group could be protected against trolling, it would be fine. But people want to participate in events. So to say that they can’t as the key to the strategy is pretty much the opposite of fun.

An End to the Queensdale Train

It’s supposed to be for new players. The champ bags were meant to make the events more appealing so new players would want to team up and take down the champs. Now that they’re vets, new players can run the events and the train is derailed. I’m not saying that it’s a great move on Anet’s part this late in the game, but I find Queensdale to be much nicer, personally.

Guhracie.3419

Yeah, I did always look forward to more skins I could throw in my PvP wardrobe. :/ As a collector, I enjoyed that. However, since PvP skins no longer exist, if they’d kept the old system they’d basically be handing out an average of 2 Exotics every time we got an achievement chest. (I’d LOVE that, but all those Exotics flooding into the economy could be a problem.)

The best rewards from the AP chests now are the flat gold bonus and the Zenith weapon/armor skins.

Except they could accomplish the same effect by giving the items as skin tokens instead of actual exotic items. So instead of being PvP Shield of the Moon, it would just be Shield of the Moon skin, account bound. Or a list of random auto-unlocks.

Guhracie.3419

So I’ve come back from a break and found my talents gone and for the characters I was leveling, I now have to earn talent points. If you enjoy dungeons and group events, then good, but I don’t. So unless I do something I don’t enjoy, I am locked out of many of these traits as far as I can tell.

Or I can spend gold…problem is that despite having several level 80’s I’d pretty much spent the last of my money getting master crafter before I took a break.

So I have a choice, farm money, or do content I don’t enjoy.

It’s WoW all over again.

This is not a dig at people who enjoy that content, I’m just not one of them.

This is not true, unless you’re talking about the 5 new grandmaster traits. Any characters created prior to the April 15th patch will have access to all traits as they are unlocked at the appropriate level.

I can understand the pvp chest being gone. But Anet should have replaced it with something.

Are you guys being sarcastic or did this many people really not notice that it was replaced. The PVP reward tracks give loot about 5x better rate than the pre Apr 15 chests system, and it’s the same stuff just standardized salvage mats and permanent skin unlock. Literally zero downside, only buffs.

The downside is that people who don’t PvP are not going to get those rewards now. We’re not talking about chests from PvPing, we’re talking about chests that were awarded alongside achievement point chests.

Game Updates: Traits

Guhracie.3419

Well, I won’t be advising anyone to buy new character slots, and I’m glad I didn’t buy any in the last sale. My new alts are officially going to be running around without traits until level 80, and then I’ll only get the ones I need for my build. If the intention with free trait resets was to allow for more build diversity, that has failed horribly.

If you’re going to have 100% zone completes unlocking things, at least have it unlock all the adept traits in a certain line. Having it unlock a single trait is just punitive, especially when it’s high level zones for low level traits. This is just SO. BAD. And has anyone done the math on the cost in gold and skillpoints to unlock all the traits at the vendor? I want to say it’s around 450 skillpoints and 100g per character.

Did the math. Unless I’ve made an error (which is entirely possible):
10s 2sp x30 [3g, 60sp] Adept
50s 5sp x20 [10g, 100sp] Master
1.5g 10sp x8 [12g, 80sp] Old Grandmaster
3g 20sp x5 [15g, 100sp] New Grandmaster

Totals up to 40g, 340sp.

Well, my estimate was high by quite a bit. Thanks for this! It’s still pretty punitive, though.

Guhracie.3419

Do you mean the armor sets? Because full outfits (or costumes- Mad King Thorn, Fancy Winter Clothes, Witch’s Costume) do not require transmutation charges.

As for gemstore armor skins requiring transmutation charges, while I agree it would be nice for them to never cost a thing to apply, the first time you apply them is free, and until April 15th, you could only use them on one armor set at a time, and it still used a transmutation stone to reapply. So the functionality of the present system is massively improved over the previous system, and given that transmutation charges can be easily earned in-game, I suspect it’s not hurting their bottom line.

You should conceivably be able to do these at the level they can be used. (I know I’m not saying anything new here.)

I don’t mind the leveling process, or the fact that I have to do things for traits, or that traits start later. All that would be livable, but paired with impossible tasks, it’s just nightmarish.

Does it have to be out of player control for any of the traits? I just got my thief trait for fighting the risen priest of Grenth- he appears even when defending. I was told on map chat that Lyssa is the only one impeded by defending.

Edit:

It’s just another gold sink so you buy the trait instead. Another inconvenience.

Or to attract attention from people who weren’t inclined to buy it the first time around. You know, to drum up sales. The exact same reason anything without a physical component (for example, digital downloads) have sales.

Can confirm most armor on Charr looks downright silly.

Nonsense sir. Here is a picture of my Charr wearing her light armor.

Notice how well fitting is is and how the hood is purrfect on her.

That’s not bad for Charr light armor. What pieces are you using?

You can tell from the high quality textures that it’s a gemstore set. I’m not sure which one, though.

Most medium armor looks decent on charr. I use the medium aetherblade coat on mine.

For more hilarity, check out the tophat in the gem store on an asura. Why is it so tiny? Nobody knows.

Baby Mini series 1 in gemstore (1600 gems)

Great another slap in the face for people who buy all the miniatures as they come out. I am never ever going to spend a single cent on gems again. I am fed up with anets business ethics.
I can only say: Games with monthly subcription ftw!

Except having miniatures isn’t required for your character to perform it’s day to day duties.

So no.

What else is there to do in GW2 than collecting cosmetic stuff? Look at the updates since release. Almost everything was temporary content since release or useless content where you have no reason to go back after you did it once (like the aetherblade JP in gendarran fields)
And anets puts 80-90% of the stuff worth having into the gem shop where you feel ripped off times after times again because of actions like this.

So you’re mad that the price decreased after a year? You must hate sales.

I bought this outfit specifically because of how it looks on Charr. It was AWESOME with the bobble-head effect.

Disappointed with dyes, not doing it again

I bought two packs of 5 dyes and got none of the new ones and one rare. I’m still kicking myself a few days later over it.

Not the best way to welcome a new player back. At the very least the real chances of getting the new dyes should be on the description instead of a vague “you may win something”

The word “chance” does not mean the same as “guaranteed”. Even if you knew the exact odds, you could realistically be in the same position if you took that chance. Tis RNG.

If I knew the general odds it would definitely affect my buying.

But I guess that is what they are counting on… that the person buying believes it’s a better deal than it really is.

You do know the odds, you just don’t understand them. That’s OK, most people who hadn’t taken Prob and Stats in college don’t (and some who did still don’t). There is a 1 in 16 chance that 10 dyes yield no special ones. There is always a chance of failure. A one on your saving throw. And since the fine dye market collapsed compared to the pre-announcement prices, it’s even more of a loss.

LOOK. You said this. It’s right here. The only adjustment I have made was to bold your statement, “You do know the odds, you just don’t understand them.”

This is factually inaccurate. You cannot calculate the odds without crucial data that we simply do not have, and you clearly stated that the odds are known.

I’m not going to engage in this line of conversation any further, for the sake of my alleged sanity. I sincerely do not understand how you can claim you never said that the odds could be calculated, when you clearly did, on this very page.

I read your point as the odds must be below what’s implied. And because it costs so much to do any empirical testing ourselves before we achieve any level of confidence it leaves both of us with the choice of believing what’s implied by their 6 in 25 statement or not.

I’m using the implied odds to demonstrate that it’s possible to get a dissatisfied result with sample size of 10 or 20 or 5 or whatever. Others choose to take these complaints as fact that the odds are significantly less. I’m simply trying to show that’s not necessarily the case.

No, what you said was that the odds are known. All I did was demonstrate that the odds are not known. I was not making any further implications about my own personal beliefs, I was stating fact. I did not speculate in any way that the odds are lower than what is implied, I said that it’s possible they are, and that’s what I meant.

Even with 50/50 odds it’s possible to get a dissatisfied result; I don’t think anyone is contesting that. I’m certainly not.

I really don’t know how to make this more clear.

No, I’m not making any assumptions. That’s the difference.

You simply cannot make this scientific argument without all the data. The very premise that you’re trying to dismiss (the complaint that the odds aren’t known) is more valid than your argument against it, because you are the one making the assumption. That proves the point.
