No Dungeons No Cash

i’d love to see new dungeons. it’s a pity we haven’t gotten any new dungeons that include a story mode, 3 explorable modes and armor and weapon sets added to the game along with a pvp track for said dungeon. multiple dungeons would have been even better.

they keep talking about how much content is going to be jam packed into this new x-pac. i hope that isn’t hyperbole and is actually the case. to get our first really substantial content dump in almost three years, i(and i think rightfully)have extremely high expectations. Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North, and GW2 are all awesome. Hopefully it’s a wonderful addition to the game.

I will say it has been odd to see so many key employees leave during the busy time of development though. I am never shocked to see devs head for different things after something like this gets released, but this has been an odd development cycle for sure.

Captain's Airship Pass Relog Annoyance

Indeed, a convenience item should not make you sit through three loading screens just to log on and do some things (Load airship, get kicked out, load gendarran fields, click airship pass and load airship again)

Fantastic point. As an aside, I would get one of these if we had access to an account wide inventory bag. We don’t though and that hinders the “convenience”. 1000 gems right now is 150g+. There is nothing convenient about getting that for all my toons or spending that much real money to buy one for each character. I would have to do that in order for it to be convenient. This is great for the gal or guy that has a main and that’s who they play. I spend fairly equal amounts of time between all professions. The convenience should be worth the purchase and if there was an account bound inventory bag to store this in so all my characters had access to it, then it would be convenient and worth it. Same for the harvesting tools.

He’s so right! I learned that if the Pavilion comes around and is “taking donations” to fix Lion’s Arch again, I can’t believe a word of it! Last time, I donated a huge sum of gold for the rebuilding of LA and it’s still in total shambles.

So do like Evon Gnashblade and don’t forget the hard lessons we learned: Arbitrary gold sinks are arbitrary.

MMORPG Longevity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Iason Evan.3806

Making a game world feel lived in or rather that you give the players tools to allow their characters a place to live in is totally important. ArenaNet has that first piece in place because the game world feels lived in. There are a ton of little touches that make the game world look as if it has age to it.

The second piece of that puzzle is giving players the tools so that they can have a place for their characters to live. On that front, ArenaNet has dropped the ball. One of their selling points for this game was the home instance and they completely abandoned letting us use that space to make our own. Games like The Sims, Minecraft, Star Wars Galaxies and the The Elder Scrolls games got that right and have or had a longevity all their own based on the freedom they gave their playerbase to make that space a game of their own.

Ownership is something that goes a long way in creating longevity in a game. If I feel like a space in a world is all mine, I can call it home.

The Break-bar, or how to commit to mechanics

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

A lot of us have talked about this for years. It’s frustrating. You can completely shut down a player in PvP, but shutting down a boss is frowned upon. It would be nice to see boss fights where the bosses had no defiance and the *point was to keep that boss CCed or everyone would get jacked.

I agree with the assessment that they should commit to a mechanic. I was really bummed when the game came out and they had been talking about “Control” being one of the playstyles and it was unequivocally not true.

Skill splits would fix a lot of the issues, but they won’t commit to it.

Calling for people’s jobs is a deplorable thing to do. You need to adjust your tact so that how you are communicating isn’t hurting what you are communicating. As it stands now, no one from ArenaNet will read this. It will get closed and ignored because no one likes being talked at instead of talked to. If you fix the tone, you will at least get it read. Not in the form it’s in now though.

More recent TES games have sold heavily on consoles, infact they make pc sales look tiny.. you cannot mod on console.

Do they count digital sales in the statistics though? Or only boxed? Because majority of PC gamers just buy digital by now.

Majority of this “PC sales statistics” are boxed copies only.

Bethesda isn’t a public company so they don’t have to (and usually don’t) share their data at all. Which means we might know what percentage of sales were retail boxed (seems to be about 14%) but we don’t know how many were bought directly from them for download.

From other games we know that 3-4 times the amount of boxes sales are often sold as downloads. How that affects the final percent, no one can tell you, except Bethesda…and they haven’t said.

Good points all. A cursory look at sites like Nexus that host mods and have millions of downloads tells a story as well. Same with the Steam Workshop. Lots of people play the single player games on PC because the modding community offers such a robust experience with the game. I have played more hours of the single player TES games than almost any other franchise and a big part of that is the modding community’s work.

Second Ladder Test Season

in PvP

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

In my opinion there should be tiers to the leaderboard and rewards for each tier. Also, there should be rewards for the top of each tier. The goal should be getting people to play. Period. Then, as you build up the player base you can reintroduce solo queue again. It’s so frustrating as a solo player to have to go up against premades. It’s so frustrating to know when my queue goes a minute or two over avg. queue time that I am going to be teamed up with people of such varying levels of talent that it makes the game a total crapshoot. I could win by 350+ points or lose by 350+ points. I could have a close game or a 4v5.

Rewards in PvP for an 8 week test ladder should be handed out to more people to get more people to come play it. Most look at it and realize they don’t have a shot at all and simply choose not to play.

i.e. depending on your choices, NPC’s hate or like you, survive to live a fulfilled life in your story instance or die a terrible death.

In fact, when Anet first gave details on the Personal Story and the Personality System they said that this would be the case. They repeatedly gave the example of saving the hospital or saving the orphanage which would have lasting effects on your home instance. That… didn’t work out so well.

^ And I think that would have been the better way to convey the permanence of the story. With the home instance, the outcomes of those choices are always tangible whereas the PS gets a story branch played through one time and then you don’t see it again in-game. I was also super bummed that decorating the home instance with choices we made or even having something to make our home instances feel like our own was abandoned.

Weren’t dungeons also supposed to be fairly malleable? 3 paths in explorable mode, but almost procedurally generated in spots? Hopefully Guild Halls in HoT will give us a little of the home instance “lived in” flavor that we were supposed to get. I look back on a lot of the things that ArenaNet sold me the game on and they simply aren’t there. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the game immensely, because I do, but man they scrapped a lot of the ideas that I bought the game based upon the notion that they would be in the game.

Weird Ele Nuke Move

in PvP

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

That’s an bad elementalist exploiting the lack of autobalance measures for damage that would prevent broken builds from taking more than 3 seconds to defeat other player single-handedly.

That particular build can take out a heavy armored character in less than 1 second.

What you saw that looked like a jump is a bug that makes animations start when you see a player coming from stealth, instead starting in he actual frame the animation is in.
It’s the same reason why you will see players starting a Finishing move right when stealth runs out but finish way before the animation ends, because they are actually almost finished under stealth, but the animation in your client started when Stealth ran out.

The elementalist looked like leaping, but that wasn’t what really happened. He just got revealed after the teleport, the game didn’t know how to animate that properly, and the result looked like a leap.

This kind of player is well aware of such bugs and flaws, and they will exploit it as much as they can. They will also mock and dismiss anyone denouncing such behavior hoping the bugs won’t be acknowledged and fixed, then go to the forums to cry and post silly “I quit” posts when the fixes are finally done.

^ This is one of the most frustrating things plaguing pvp at the moment. +1 for explaining it so clearly.

I think the concerns are valid.

A.) Warrior looks to have a new “F” skill. Is that something added to Warrior or is that the specialization?
B.) Rangers still seem to have their primary mechanic of having a pet with the Druid Spec./Shouldn’t the pet be gone?

ArenaNet hasn’t really conveyed that these specializations are far departures from the base professions yet. You would think the ele spec would not have attunements at all. I wouldn’t think an added attunement for a spec. would do anything other than make people not ever play base ele.

They said that the closed beta would be happening shortly after PAX, so we have to be close unless “shortly” meant like 2 months in which case, idk what to say.

New Down-scaling Since Patch

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

I have actually speculated since Megaserver release that doing HARD mode zones was one of the MAIN reasons Megaserver was introduced (to reduce the number of active zones, so they could basically double the number actually being used and STILL potentially have less active zones than the pre-Megaserver system).

/like this speculation.

The original GW2 zones are beautiful, and too good to be only played once.

When HoT comes out, it may be interesting if the mega server system will provide a way to send level 80 players who have completed a zone to another version of the zone where their stats will be reduced, events will progress a bit into the future, and upon completing the new version, they are one step closer to a precursor.

In short, part of the mastery system.

Just a fleeting fantasy… I haven’t thought thru this at all. But your speculation is very interesting to me.

[Edit add: Forgot to say some level 80 players may complain they can no longer go to the same instance as their lower level friends. .. well more QA work lol.] Not a topic for this thread of course. Just fun to echo your speculation. Later!

I like this. I wouldn’t mind harder level 80 versions of all the maps. It would be great actually. They want to keep the old game still occupied, but we haven’t hear hide nor hair about whether or not they are adding new content to existing zones. A system like the one you are talking about would be a welcome step in that direction.

Alpine Borderlands Questions

in WvW

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

The “alpine borderlands” (wait who ever called them that?!?) has needed a tune up since EoTM.

I hope they remove the crappy bloodlust and reinstate the orbs you where supposed to escort from north camp to bay (cant remember if it was hills too). The concept of their mechanic – a “world event” in WvW – was much more fun, well except Anet totally kittened it up and failed to fix it, so they just removed all traces of it after a year or so of promises to reimplement it.

the only reason i said “alpine borderland” was because that’s what it was called in what i quoted.

i am of the mind that there should be some events that happen that are player based. No NPCs but an event kicks off randomly and players have to get to them. Fights ensue etc. Whoever wins gets a bonus, but they have to defend that bonus by some means. That way it isn’t just this passive, get this bonus and then go about your merry business.

It’s like sitting down to a game of Monopoly with friends and passing “Go” and asking for your $200 and your friends are like, “Nah, we decided that you don’t get that money for passing go.”

“You could have told me that before the game started.”

Alpine Borderlands Questions

in WvW

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

Taken from the WvW blog post today: “We want to give players solid reasons to keep their keeps, so you might find that running up to knock on your enemy’s front door with a big group isn’t the most efficient path to victory. In turn, you’ll have plenty of new strategies to discover and important decisions to make when using the landscape to your advantage. We’ll be back to tell you more about how we plan to apply these concepts to World vs. World as a whole, so be on the lookout between now and the launch of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns.
Even though this will initially replace the existing Borderlands, we have plans to bring back the classic alpine Borderlands. More information on that will come in the future.
I hope you folks enjoyed this peek at what’s to come and are excited to try out the new map and mechanics. See you on the battlefield!

I am really excited about the new borderlands after watching the Rezzed stream. I am not a WvW player. It’s the one format I have found lacking for whatever reason. It just never clicked with me. I don’t find anything bad about WvW, it’s just not to my tastes. The Rezzed panel changed that for me.

My question is really about the above paragraph. I know you guys said you will be talking about that stuff later, but are you guys thinking of updating the alpine borderlands map to be more in line mechanically with the new one -i.e. changing it so the objectives reward defending towers and keeps etc-? I hope so, because it seems to me that battles will feel more like they should if a team has to defend things instead of taking them and then moving on to the next empty place and taking that etc. I found in my limited time in WvW that the majority of play was just going from empty place to empty place and taking something and actual battles being fought over buildings being the exception, not the rule. That just seemed off to me.

I have always felt that taking over a building should be so that you should try and keep it by all means necessary because it should confer benefits that would be worth keeping it. The game now doesn’t seem to play that way for the most part and I would like to see that change.

Anyways, I am really excited about this new map. It looks like it will play great and I hope that resources are being allocated to update the old map so that it plays more in line with how this new one seems to play. Thanks!

Revert Camera Changes

Iason Evan.3806

I totally disagree OP. I have found the changes to be wonderful across the board. I don’t even mind the bugs(and there have been quite a few). This should have been in from day 1, but I think artist pride put form over function. This is so much better from a player’s perspective. The camera doesn’t feel like a hindrance anymore.

What’s wrong with just using the default settings OP?

I couldn’t go back. There are things to fine tune for sure, but ArenaNet will get it sorted.

My suggestion to the team is to always put player QoL in front of all else. Camera wonkiness is gone. That wonkiness was detrimental to the game for me. Thanks for the changes. They are awesome!

New camera = Oculus Rift support?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

No, people have been asking for these things before Oculus rift was just a concept.

You have to build your game around VR for it to work. It could be retrofitted but it wont be as good. Guidl wars 2 is ultimate a third person combat game, it will not work well with the rift.

Also the rift is a 200-400 piece of equipment with a niche fanbase what makes you think ARenanet will support it?

There was a ton of news out of GDC this year about VR in general. There are a fairly large amount of these devices coming. Sony has one. Valve has one. There is Oculus. Microsoft is going to be peddling one that is a bit different. There are a few others too. This is something the industry is already looking toward as a part of the future. It’s a valid question.

I personally think that they could be tinkering with it, not for GW2, but for the future. A lot of the stuff that ArenaNet release is testing for later things. I think the rare and exotic food we saw at the Ram Fest. was testing for 500 cooking. The lottery tickets and daily Ram Fest. envelopes were the same thing. Silverwastes seems to me to be a precursor to the systems we will experience in HoT only they will be a little more fleshed out. It’s all iteration. They add this camera, and if they happen to have a Valve VR kit lying around and someone wants to tinker with it they will.

The thing about Valve’s VR kit that is so inspiring is people say they are experiencing “Presence” with it. Presence is what happens when you are in VR and you have a subconscious level reaction to something. An arrow flies at you from a Ranger and you try to avoid it at a “fight or flight” level of your brain that goes beyond thinking about it. Games don’t offer that type of experience at the moment. I know I would be interested in that sort of experience in an MMO for sure.

I’d like to see the mechanic changed so that the player could control the pet while your character remains stealthed and stationary. Give each pet skills to use while the player controls it. They have done next to nothing to improve the pet since before the game came out. It plays almost entirely the same as when I played the demo at ComiCon before the game came out in 2011. It’s disappointing.

I may not agree with changes they say are too minimal to put resources towards but I understand. With the Ranger pets I don’t understand at all. it’s a profession we are talking about here and their absolute reluctance to change the way the pets work from the ground up is disheartening.

Some classes have really broken things about them that have never and probably will never get them fixed like myriad things about Mesmers and Ranger pets.

If another person wants to play only new content with their rev, the tomes give them the ability to do that. Not everyone wants to have to level again in the old game. There are a lot of us bored to tears of the old game.

Are any changes coming to this soon? The amount of clicks for the magic find during the Ram New Year Fest. was awful. Also, having to win 10 games to be allowed to purchase items that cost money in order to have a chance of getting a little extra coin is awful.

“Here you go guys! Spend some money on a chance to get a little more money than you spent! It’s a lottery with a time sink added before you are allowed to purchase the lottery tickets!”

People play RPGs in part, to do something with a reward at the end of it. Play enjoyable, well-made content, get a reward. A serious question for the player base: Do any players really want to play content in order to be able to buy things that may or may not have a reward? That’s not a very gratifying reward loop.

No thanks, unless the Elite is: “Right before you would take damage that would kill you, you deliver an annoying monologue and teleport to safety in an entirely other zone.”

So... where are the dungeons?

Hopefully they address some of it. ArenaNet tend to focus on open-world, large group content with people you don’t know. It’s shopping mall content. you go to a place where there are a lot of people an look at what they are wearing and there isn’t really any meaningful social activity there.

Organized, small party group content has gone on the back burner for sure and it’s a shame because the dungeons and fractals in this game are a lot of fun. I would liken this content to having a small dinner party. People talk, there is a structure to it and a purpose. It’s a lot of fun for smaller guilds as well. It’s something that you can all do together that isn’t running around with 50 other people being rude and childish in map chat.

How about we wait until it is released?

100% this.

No possible judgement can be passed until it’s out and being played by the masses. None at all.

We can speculate, we can contribute constructive ideas…but it is simply is not possible to judge the scale or quality of the expansion at this stage when so much detail is yet to come and it isn’t even out yet!

Also, I recommend playing a Lotro expansion and seeing how small and insignificant expansions can really be sometimes..

It’s understandable for players to have concerns too though. They announced Stronghold and the new WvW Borderlands maps with the HoT announcement and now we know that you won’t have to own HoT to get those. When you announce major features with the HoT announcement only to find out that HoT isn’t required for that it makes it feel like padding for the announcement.

I agree that we need to see the breadth of the release before jumping to conclusions, but healthy skepticism of a product is a good thing as well.

I will miss ya Mr. Whiteside! It was always good to converse with you even when we disagreed. You were a great ambassador for the game. ArenaNet and the fans are losing one of the beacons of the game. Best of luck to you in the future!

The only way I would want capes in GW2 is if they didn’t clip during raids while having duels on mounts.

This is now the player vs thief forum. Carry on

You’re right. A class should be immune to a GM Trait. Giving a class carte blanche to another classes’ mechanics is poor design. At the very least it should affect the Thief in some way like loss of Initiative or something.

The ICC issue is an absolute, unmitigated debacle. It should have been rectified. I like SAB, but I am not one of the die hard fans of it so I never bought a coin, but how it was and still is being handled is poor form.

It’s fairly obvious to me at this point that we aren’t getting actual game play content before the x-pac. Why don’t they just release Worlds 1 and 2 until the x-pac goes live? Why not bring back the Pavilion? The Marionette fight?

I appreciated the fact that they said they needed to make sure the upcoming update got a little more work on it so they could get it right. That’s good communication. I feel however that they should have done a better job getting content out to us in the interim as we wait for the x-pac to launch. Those things I mentioned earlier would be a good diversion until HoT arrives if nothing else.
