It’s entirely possible the spread was wider when those buy/sell offers were posted. Some sellers just automatically post 1 copper below existing sales, without looking; some buyers offer just 1 copper more, also without looking.

Naturally, savvy traders wouldn’t do that. The again, savvy traders usually aren’t putting in offers inside the margin (except to flip, which doesn’t apply here).

All I would say is there is just as much onus on you to prove that a new race wouldn’t be an effective selling point as there is on me to prove it would be.

On the contrary, it’s up to those asking for a change to the status quo to show that it’s worth the resources to change it. Especially in this situation, since the goal of threads such as this is to convince ANet to change their plans.

All critics need to do is show that the costs are substantive

The API might have been down when you checked, Amimon. It’s back up, but to save you trouble…

  • GS + Sword/Shield
  • Ether Feast, WoC, WoR, Blink, WoG
  • Marauder all around, Force/Air + Force/Fire + Superior Chrono runes
  • Dom: bottom bottom top
  • Ill: m m m
  • Chrono: b m b

I think you could run the same thing with zerker instead of marauder, based on my guess as to your personal skill level (from reading your posts) — squishier but faster kills. Leadership runes, if you wanted to be raid-ready. Chrono is fine, esp with the three wells; could also swap in scholar’s or other sixth-bonus deeps effects.

That means several years of daily usage before you’ll get even.

Exactly which existing nodes take less than several years of usage before breaking even on costs?

Fair enough, although the difference here is that those other nodes can be used by many people. And most of them were a black lion chest drop, not a gemshop purchase.

After doing the math, you can see that even with an alt account, it still takes years. The BL chests take longer, actually, since those prices are affected by availability, whereas the gem-costing-nodes are always the same price in gems.

Once there’s more data, I can do some estimation about earnings from this. Based on what we’ve seen so far, if you choose to collect only totems, you can probably pay it off within a couple of years, which is about as good as the most efficient of the other nodes (BL chest or gem store). The most valuable part is: you can adjust the output to suit your needs or the market. That might turn out to make them extremely valuable on the week of major updates or expansions.

As I said above, I won’t be buying it, because it doesn’t provide any particular convenience to me. But it’s probably not as bad a deal as people fear, despite the 50% additional gem cost and the lack of share-ability.

Humans see connections were there arent any

Indeed. Here are some other reasons that there might be six episodes:

  • With a ~2 month cadence, it means exactly a year of Living World before ANet’s ready to launch an expac.
  • It’s easily divisible by 2 and 3, allowing ANet flexibility in figuring out whether to have two teams take on three episodes each or three teams handling two.
  • Human attention span roughly accommodates keeping track of 7 things at once; six is a safer number when you want people’s attention.
  • Coincidence.
  • Half a dozen of one; six of the other.

I’m sure there are stellar players among us (perhaps even the two people posting above) who find it “easy as pie.” For many of us, it’s not trivial to solo. I can duo fine, but I don’t have the stamina to spend that much time in an instance without making fatal mistakes.

In terms of daily value, existing gem shop nodes/node packages return about 5-20 silver every day. TP/BL Chest nodes deliver about 1s to nearly 19s per day, depending on which ones.

Currently, nodes on the TP range from about 120g (lowest of best buy offers) to 2200g (highest of best sell offers). It takes under 400g to buy 1200 gems (most days), so this one works out to be a on the cheaper side.

We don’t have much data on the hunter’s board, but it appears that a worst case is probably 5-6s if you get unlucky drops. Best case (getting 3x T6 blood, e.g.) would be close to 1g. More likely, you’d probably get around 10-20s, especially if you choose the higher value mats. That’s still probably better than a lot of the nodes, even if you have multiple accounts that farm.

So roughly speaking, this is comparable to other gem shop nodes in income-per-cost and likely better than a lot of the TP/BL Chest nodes. Plus, you get to swap the output based on your needs and/or the marketplace.

That said, I’m not dropping 1200 gems on it. It doesn’t offer me even 400 gems gems of convenience.

A simple solution that would make a lot of players happy and wouldn’t add to the workload for the devs on creating new outfits.

BREAK OUTFITS INTO PIECES!

Yup… simple as that… break outfits into pieces, let us mix’n’match outfits, allow armor parts to show for any outfit slot that is left empty, or even just add the outfit parts as universal armor skins.

Outfits broken into pieces are called armor pieces. All the issues that pertain to outfits being more efficient to produce apply; this isn’t a new idea and it certainly doesn’t address the core issues involved.

The Argument for Tengu/a new race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Practically all content that a new playable race would provide can be obtained without needing a new playable race. The only things that I see a new race providing is a new cosmetic appearance and for those that RP.

All things being equal, that’s true. However, as it turns out, some of the best stories in the game (in my opinion) are the level 10 and level 20 racial stories — the charr, asura, and most sylvari are both interesting and fun to play.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that a new race would be the same; I cringe at the idea of being stuck with a voice actor like that of the female norn (well, as exhibited in the game; the VA is fine in other roles). Worse, it puts lots of eggs in one basket. All story-oriented players like having Living World stories; not all story-oriented players care for all racial stories.

So the point remains that regardless of the resources required for adding a new race (Tengu or otherwise), those same resources can be devoted to other, similar things that appeal to more people. (And, as has been noted, it’s very likely that they can be devoted to more things; a new race requires a lot more infrastructure then “just” a new skin on some NPCs.)

Shadow Weapon Skins ...

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s no predicting BL ticket skin availability. The only thing we know for sure is that one-ticket skins become three-ticket skins (or briefly, two-ticket skins) for a while before being removed. Reintroduced skins cost 5 tickets usually, although occasionally they can be found in BL chests as rare or uncommon drops.

Usually, a new story chapter means a new skin set, but that’s not consistent. Usually, 5-ticket reintroductions last at least 2-3 weeks; some have lasted a bit longer.

Further more, review TP prices before spending 5 tickets on a skin. Shadow skins range from 80g (lowest buy order) to 250g (highest sell offer). Keepsake skins are 28-41g. So five tickets can get you ~150g after taxes — that’s enough to put in aggressive buy offers on half the shadow skins. (That calculus varies each day and depending on what’s available for one ticket or five — keepsake skins have some of the worst values of all times; other skins have been worth twice as much.)

And finally, sometimes the TP price of the skins drops after they are removed from the ticket vendor. This happens because people invest in them, thinking there will be a huge spike in price and then they realize there’s a glut on the market. It can take a year or three before such investments are profitable.

tl;dr

  • Buy now if you really want the skin.
  • Put in an aggressive buy order if you just want the skin, but aren’t willing to pay a premium.
  • Check TP prices. Sometimes, it’s “cheaper” to buy five one-ticket skins, sell them, and buy the five-ticket skin.

That would not be ideal, because then there’d be no means to prepare yourself for T4 by doing the lower tier versions of the fractals. Ideally fractal development should have 25 unique levels, so each tier only uses a given fractal once.

I agree with RD. The point of “fractal” is that there’s a recursiveness to it, each piece looks the same as other pieces. 25 unique maps for 4 tiers or 10 unique maps for 10 tiers.

I’m basing my statement on posts I read on these forums that said an Anet dev on reddit said that sigil swapping was actually coming, just not right now. If that’s not the case then that’s a pity.

I fear that might be a mish-mash of people remembering what the devs said. The only quotes I’ve seen made it clear that ANet had planned to introduce sigil swapping and decided not to. They only very rarely promise unless/until a feature is about to ‘ship’. I’ll see if I can find the quotes.

Um, what’s the difference between calling the day the test servers are updated release day and what we have now? There are occasional bugs affecting non-new content (and many of those wouldn’t be caught on a test server; see above); most bugs affect the new content.

The end result is that ANet works a lot harder to put out any content, there’s a lot of people playing on different servers (diluting the MMO-ness of the game), many people are spoiled, and not all that many bugs are prevented.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

They are planning on offering sigil swapping functionality in the same way that legendary armour allows you to swap runes, it’s just a bit more complex than they expected.

To be fair, what they said was that they had planned to offer this at the same time as rune swapping, but ran into unexpected obstacles — they didn’t share what those were and many (including myself) have presumed that they were largely economic. However, we don’t really know what got in the way or how close they are to addressing it.

Consequently, I think we’ll continue to see a lot of post likes this until ANet clarifies their plans for sigils on legendaries.

In other words, we know ANet wants sigil swapping; we just don’t know if they have a solution that is technically feasible and economically supportable.

I had no trouble getting this event done. It appeared bug when I arrived on the map. I parked my character at the boss and returned the next day. At that point, the chain event text — that appears on the upper right of our screens — was consistent with the chain being unstarted.

I went to the start of the chain, called out in /map, and offered an LFG. I then proceeded to solo the events in the chain, calling out the status repeatedly. Although there were people on the map, no one joined me.

I don’t mean to say that the events aren’t wonky — they definitely bug out. But I don’t think it’s fair to say that this chain is “nearly impossible to do” either.

So sure ANet should adjust things. Fix the event or make it easier to get the unlock for the legendary. But those things take time, so while ANet is working that out, park a toon on the map and return to it. Sometimes (perhaps even often), the events will be stalled. Sometimes, they’ll be on cooldown. But you only need it to work once.

For removing gaps, wouldn’t it be easier to modify the UI? For example, the API could offer a flag that indicated whether an achievement was “progressable”. Sites like GW2 Efficiency could include a filter to hide them, even if ANet isn’t able to program it into the game.

I confess I completely misunderstood what you were going for because most of the rhetoric was about AP.

But I disagree with OP’s most recent statement: I would always choose to have the ability to see what I missed out on, even if I can no longer achieve them. So it makes sense to me to keep them visible, even if incomplete.

Besides what Cyninja said:
The main thing that makes dungeons, fractals, or raids difficult for most people is the mechanical aspect. Learning the fights matters more than specific builds (although some builds are much better suited to those mechanics, of course).

You can definitely choose to teach yourself dungeons and low-level fractals; I recommend it. However, there are also plenty of resources online, including the wiki, Dulfy, Deroir/KING, among others.

Higher-level fractals are harder for some folks, but they can still be self taught. Besides the above guides, Quantify also has some great vids and descriptions, as well as what you can find via google.

Like Cyninja said, do those things first, then come back and ask more about raids. There is a thread in the foums with a list of raid guides and helpful guilds, as well as gearing /build suggestions.

Good luck and please post again when you’ve made progress or you need some new ideas.

[Suggestion] Custom Outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Nice idea, but as long as transmute charges are a gem-store item, it probably won’t happen.

If it works as an outfit, what’s the difference between buying one of the anet-designed outfits and making one of your own? Maybe the cost is 800 gems instead of 400-700 gems per outfit.

I don’t know if I’d buy any… but almost certainly if I got one for free (say as an account-wide birthday gift) and it turned out well, I imagine I’d be sorely tempted to plunk down the gems for more.

@OP: I imagine ANet has already kicked the idea around a few times. Unless it’s more complicated than we think (and things often are), my bet is that they are just waiting for the right time and the right resources to become available. (Their armor team is probably still finishing up Legendary, so it might be a while.)

i have yet to see any such consequences and i have plenty of characters, absolutely nothing really changes and i end up with just the same.

Take another look then. Your choices decide which allies you have with you at the end, for example.

i have taken 15 other looks, looking at it many times doesn’t change it.

If in the last instance I run into skritt instead of ogres, then it’s different. It’s almost exactly the same as the example you yourself gave.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It’s an old thread indeed, but still a valid one. Many players only play with a small group of friends, unable to start a guild of their own. And Anet has never made clear if the current policy to only encourage guilds with many players is made with a reason and if its a permanent choice.

Any individual can start a guild. Any individual can grab randoms to claim the guild hall. Any individual can build up favor and invest in their hall.

Of course, it will be expensive. But it’s expensive for most guilds, who mostly end up relying on just a couple of people to fund most of the coin & material needs of upgrading. The biggest advantage of having 100 is that you’re more likely to have more than one person willing to put dents in the pocket book.

As to whether this is a permanent situation… well it’s been two years since the game added guild halls. It will be at least 3-6 months before the second expac. At that point, if ANet hasn’t changed the requirements, I think it’s safe to say that they are content (or perhaps even pleased) with the status quo.

Typically if a large amount of mats is dumped on the TP, a lot of other people follow suit, worried that there’s something new going on that they missed, and rushing to sell out before the market drops further.

Then, there’s people like me who welcome the opportunity to invest in mats.

Regardless, nothing has changed in the game in the last 24 hours. So it’s players returning in anticipation of LS3.6, someone who opened a metric tush ton of champ bags on an L44-53, coincidence, or insider trading. (Since the answer is almost never the last, I’m putting my money on coincidence.)

I’ve never seen high ping specific to Gherent. There have been lag spikes, mostly due to DDoS attacks on the internet backbone that connects ANet to the ISPs that many of us use; it’s nothing to do with TD, except that it has happened often during the post-reset Gherent attempt.

Map closing at full squad: that’s a known and unfortunate issue with map closures. Maps that are scheduled to close can still close even with a lot of people. ANet’s made some adjustments that seem to have reduced its frequency, but it can still happen.

I’ve seen the other bugs you describe, but they seem rare and confined to a particular instance. The good thing about map closures is it gives these events a chance to reset. So, of course, the bugs should be fixed; it might not be urgent to do so.

If you see it again (and assuming you have time), please also use the in-game /bug reporting tool. That provides ANet with additional data that often proves useful to troubleshooting.

Daily AP Trading and Historical achievements

Illconceived Was Na.9781

According to the wiki’s list of achievements:

  • WvW Seasons: 714 AP
  • Retired (e.g. minis in storage): 165
  • Original Fractal: 105
  • Festivals (that won’t be available to newcomers): 1163
  • LS1: 2799

Now that seems like a big chunk of AP (which, in raw numbers, it is). But there are tons of AP available elsewhere:

  • Collections (which didn’t exist during LS1): 1118 and growing
  • LS2+3+HoT stories: 1304
  • New maps: 343
  • PvP: 2271
  • WvW: 1023
  • Dailies: 15000, dwarfing everything

So sure, anyone starting the game during LS2 and later is going to have missed out on some significant pools of AP, but then again, they weren’t playing then and ANet already capped the biggest chunk of AP in the game, the dailies.

So the existing “gap” is as big as it’s ever going to be. The longer the game is out, the smaller that gap will be relative to the totals.

In the end, it might not be entirely equitable for there to be any AP that can’t be achieved by new people (aside from those obtained annually during festivals). But… does it really matter that much? Especially since doing anything about it would be (a) controversial and (b) costly.

Wouldn’t the game be better off in the long run if ANet focused on producing more AP-bearing achievements rather than trying to finding ways for newer accounts to “fairly” earn old AP?

You also don’t want ANet to do the new race well (with voice acting and stories and armor), you just want what you want.

That is, of course fine — we’re all human and we all have our passions; none of us can tell you what you think should or shouldn’t be important. this is already more work than they’re willing put in.

I’m not sure I would phrase it as “willing to put in”, it’s more that they have all sorts of other things that they think are more important. If I’m spending the 25th at work instead of playing LS3.6, it doesn’t mean I don’t want to find out what’s going on at the finale, it just means I have something else I need to be doing, too.

I admit the difference hardly matters to folks like the OP, who really want to see more races in the game. (And, incidentally, I’d also love to see the tengu become playbable.) We humans want what we want and practical considerations don’t always temper our passions.

For better or worse, ANet has to run as a business, so they have to moderate their goals with questions about finances and resources and total games sold and gem sales and so on. They can’t always deliver what we want; we just have to count on them to know how to deliver what we need.

I guess that means you don’t want to reevaluate your list or your reasoning.

I have no problem with the principle that everything should be tradeable. However, there are lots of player who do, people at ANet who do, and, as a practical matter, it impacts the economy (and the reward system).

The Argument for Tengu/a new race

“Mounts” are already in the game, via gliding and (in a simplistic and not-entirely-satisfying way) via lava tubes and oakheart reach and bloodstone fen skills. These impact how you move and what skills are (or are not) available to you and your appearance. There are also siege golems and a variety of tonics and other minor mount-like mechanics.

Creating a new race involves much more than slapping on a skin and some skills (difficult though that might be). You need lots and lots of animation, for each profession and for some particular skills. Existing armors and weapons and back items need to be altered to fit the new race.

And then, because ANet never does anything content-related by half-measures, there’s going to be a new starting instance and town, a new personal story, and new voice actors (at least 10, for the male + female voices of the four EU/NA supported languages plus Chinese).

Does that really seem like a good use of ANet’s limited resources, given all the other things we’d love to see in the game (and all the things that ANet already has planned)?

Queen Jennah: Tyrant?

On the one hand, it’s always suspicious when heads of state suspend any aspect of democracy or due process, regardless of the issues. Checks & balances are in place to protect citizens from the government making mistakes or acting in the self-interest of the political class.

On the other, what should the head of state due when other elements of the government are already acting in the interest of the enemies of the state & its citizens (and that can be proven)? When a police officer is a criminal, there’s police review boards (which might or not be as effective in RL as one hopes), but when it’s the chief of police, we expect the city government to act.

So Jennah had few legit options available to her: let many of the ministers work against the Krytan government and allow Divinity’s Reach to fall to the Mantle or suspend the legislature until she can secure the city.

The true test of whether she’s a benevolent or malicious autocrat is what she does when the emergency ends… or if it doesn’t seem to have any end. She’s not a tyrant until/unless she allows herself (or nominates herself) to permanently become the only authority in Kryta.

Daily AP Trading and Historical achievements

They can’t bring back any of the season 1 instances, because the game has evolved while the content did not. They’d have to redo the mechanics, as well as the rewards, to fit the current game. The closest we get is the story instance maps that ANet reused for some current fractals. The NPCs and some of the dialogue is copy/paste, but the mechanics are ‘modern’.

I’m not sure I understand your third idea at all. If I have 6000 daily/monthly AP and 4000 from other sources, does that mean I can convert the 6000 into getting credit for old achievements (at whatever conversion rate)? And then earn some more daily AP?

I don’t think ANet would go for it and I think it would be unpopular for reasons you haven’t mentioned. It would be tons of work to make it happen and there’s all sorts of issues it would raise. In effect, some people would have a higher daily cap than others. Also, the game would also have to figure out how to deal with people hitting various AP thresholds twice: if you convert 2k of dailies into a couple of historicals, you end up with say 8.5k — what happens when you hit 9, 9.5, and 10k again?

I get that folks that weren’t around during the first year or so can reasonably feel that they missed out (even if the total AP isn’t all that much). It also seems ‘fair’ that there should be a catch-up mechanic. Unfortunately, that’s a whole lot of effort that would go into “catching up”, rather into new content or additional quality-of-life changes that benefit everyone.

That’s how all the newest maps work: you get permanent credit for map completion (so you need not redo the hearts), but… you can also choose to do the hearts again each day (there’s even a daily achievement for doing so, rewarding some map currency).

  • every ascended mats(bloodstone, empyreal, dragonite, globs ofdark matter),
  • ascended armor/weapons (except few named ones),
  • also legendary insights,
  • wvw/pvp xp potions,
  • essences of luck and tomes of knowledge.
  • charged quartz
  • mystic clovers

The items on your list are based on player accomplishment and/or dedication; there’s almost no chance that ANet would ever agree to unbinding LI, reward track potions, mystic clovers, or ascended anything. Similarly, luck is clearly designed to up account bound magic find, so it can’t be unbound without changing that entire dynamic.

Charged quartz seem reasonable, except we can already stock up on plenty using Wintersday Gifts (which drop plenty).

Finally, tomes of knowledge… well, I know that plenty of people would love to be able unload what they consider to be too many, but (a) they can easily be converted into spirit shards already and (b) they are still intended as rewards to the account, not meant for sharing.

So you might want to reevaluate which account bound items you think ANet should reconsider

You do realize the Devs deliberately scaled back the participation of NPCs in instances/story episodes/etc. a year to two ago, so that they did not contribute much in combat, anymore.

It’s not a matter of ‘not knowing how to code the AI’.

They did more than “scale back” they made them outright ignore everything that’s happening to and around you… they won’t even lift a finger to help you unless you physically drag them into the line of fire.

Yes, that was the idea. The developers decided that the player characters should be more responsible for success (or failure) — previously, it was frequently possible to let the NPCs do most of the work and sometimes all of it.

It feels odd, because we’re used to the old way (and because the NPCs are just standing there, like leeching alt account toons). That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad for the game. (Mind you: I’m not entirely convinced it’s good for the game either — I just don’t think it matters all that much in the long run.)

They were around 6g each when Draconis Mons was more populated.

Yeah, I stocked up then. I’m sure something will happen to affect their price again.

Alternatively, you can craft using PvP or Fractal tokens, which makes the costs identical for all the armors & weapons.

The Ascension Legendary Back Item question...

I don’t mind grinding for things but I hate things that are time locked.

GW2 has always had a some things that are time bound (e.g. nearly every achievement and several items were bound to the fortnight/month in which it was delivered) and things that can be done as slowly as one likes (e.g. first generation legendaries).

With many of the ungated acquisitions, people rushed them and some burnt out, some got bored, and some ran out of things to do. It’s not a crazy idea to artificially slow people down.

I’m not a fan of the idea either — I feel I can manage my own time & priorities better than ANet can. But I respect that they have noted, accurately, that many people cannot.
