Gw2 just isn’t ready for it. Pvp is very unclear and proccy. It might be okay for the player who is seasoned, but it’s hell on viewers who never played.

E-sports is making the big leap to mainstream cable.

Publisher Blizzard has announced that the Grand Finals of its collegiate tournament for online multiplayer arena battler Heroes of the Storm will air live on ESPN2. At 6:30 p.m. Pacific (9:30 p.m. Eastern) on Sunday, the final two teams in the “Heroes of the Dorm” tournament will face off against one another to win the top prize. This is an example of how e-sports games, like Heroes of the Storm, are establishing themselves as huge spectator events along the lines of traditional sports. Analysts predict that pro-gaming, with its advertising, ticket sales, and more, will make around $465 million by 2017.

The Heroes of the Dorm event’s final four, which Blizzard is calling the “Heroic Four” to avoid getting sued by the NCAA, will kick off their first match at around 2:30 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, with Arizona State taking on Boston College. At 4:30 p.m. Pacific, Illinois Urbana-Champaign faces Cal. Both of those matches will stream live on ESPN3.com, which is the sports network’s online-only “channel.” But after that second match, ESPN2 will pick up the action live as if it were a college basketball game.

This will give the millions of people who have ESPN2 the chance to tune in and watch a pro-gaming event at its best.

Heroes of the Storm’s college tournament marks one of the first times that an e-sports tournament has made it onto a platform as huge as ESPN2. Disney’s sports division has previously worked with developer Valve on airing its tournament The International for Dota 2 last year on ESPN3.com, but that only ever made it to ESPN2 in the form of a preview show for the finals.

This shows that ESPN is definitely interested in e-sports, which is a market that is growing as a rapid pace. Millions of young people — often in the key advertising demographic of 13-to-35-years-old men — regularly tune into watch livestreaming e-sports matches on sites like MLG.tv and Twitch. And professional gaming could even dig into the NFL, MLB, and NBA over the next few decades as young people decide to stick with e-sports as they grow older.

ESPN likely knows that is a possibility, and it is establishing itself as an outlet to watch e-sports content despite recent comments from its president saying that games are not a sport. But even if he feels that way, he obviously sees the money potential by embracing this new market.

The fact that im getting premades on both sides means that there are more flaws in the system, not less. Its just that for these past few games i happened to get the “better” premade or it would be more losses than that.

Why do you have to worry?

If a 4+1 versus a 4+1 is an even match, why shouldn’t we make it? There is no right or wrong answer here, just curious as you seem to not think this is a good idea.

Why did you guys remove solo queue in the first place? Serious question. I think it would be good to put it back in.

You bring up some very good points and contrasts. The issue is compounded by the fact that clones die so easily, so the set up has to be even more surgical to pull off properly. What I see is a lot of Mesmers depending on is their synergy with Thieves and stealth which creates a symbiotic but potent relationship between the two.

I don’t think an execution should be so labyrinthine that you need an above average skill cap to pull off your main damaging move when fighting a good player.

In 1 v 1’s against a good player, it’s stupidly complex to pull off.

  • Create ranked and unranked 3v3 arenas! You can only play ranked arenas by establishing a team!
  • Relegate Stronghold, Courtyard, and conquest to a new queue called Casual!
  • Create 5 maps for arenas!
  • Create an MMR based team leaderboards for ranked arenas!
  • Remove current leaderboards! It will be burned and buried where nobody can find it!
  • Make MMR visible as ranks for all teams! Bronze, Silver, Gold, Master
  • Reaching a certain MMR will advance your team to the next division! Falling bellow a certain MMR will demote your team!
  • Reaching the next division awards gold, PvP exclusive titles, armors, weapons, finishers, etc! You will also be rewarded for staying in a certain division with a minimum game requirement!
  • Every month the Master division teams compete against one another for cash/gem prizes in the ESLGo4 whatever tournament on stream!
  • Balance the game to where the tankier you are, the less damage you deal and vice versa!
  • Balance will stop focusing on conquest and the game will slowly shift to being balanced around 3v3 arenas!
  • Balance patches will come out more frequently!
  • The Spirit Watch orb will grant a fixed movement speed and replace your weapon and utility slots with its own abilities!
  • Remove Skyhammer until it can be fixed!
  • Remove daily profession wins! Replace it with defeat x class where x is randomized for everybody!
  • Institute free PvP weekends where maybe one weekend per month, anyone can create a free GW2 account that’s restricted to the Heart of the Mists! Characters on these accounts will be unable to send/receive mail, whisper, use the trading post, and receive rewards from PvP! These accounts deactivate once the free weekend is over! Work in progress idea to make this game more popular since the addition of arenas will no doubt surge the PvP population in ways that we can only dream of!

No need to be rude. People who do not play Mesmers still play the game and they still play against Mesmers.

They have a different perspective.

Sometimes looking at something from a different angle can be advantageous. When collecting feedback from Mesmers and Mesmers only, you are collecting data from people with a vested interest in the class.

Sometimes that data may be exaggerated or distorted… because, let’s face it. We have an agenda. We want our class to be strong.

We may not think that our weakness’ are warranted when it may be intentional for the sake of balance.

There are many reasons why I would find a non Mesmers perspective valuable. And even if the feedback wasn’t of any worth you really didn’t have to be a kitten about it.

But honestly all these things you’re saying apply to so many classes. It’s not a mesmer issue, it’s a game issue.

I agree but not completely. All classes need more options… but Mesmers feel like they only have one.

I listed some specs with different playstyles you may see in top tier teams:

Elementalist: Dagger/Dagger and Celestial Staff
Engineer: Celestial Rifle and Double Kit Condi
Guardian: Meditation DPS, Virtue Bunker and Altruistic Healing Bunker
Thief: Dagger/Pistol and Sword/Dagger
Warrior: Shoutbow, Axe/Wh Longbow, Axebow and Hambow
Ranger: Condi, Power, Spirit
Mesmer: Shatter… just shatter

Each of these specs have variants I didn’t mention since the playstyles are almost identical like Panic Strike vs Crit Strike for D/P Thief or the traditional GS variant for Guardian medi DPS vs Hammer.

For Mesmers, if you are not playing shatter you’re probably doing it wrong if you want to compete.

Also, you said a good player will land his shatters. I agree. A good player will land his shatters. Nevertheless, it’s not easy to land shatters against good players. I’ll tell you this, it’s not easy for a shatter Mesmer to land shatters against me either and I don’t think I’m that great.

Phantasm builds lack burst. Though it has better sustain, it cannot down players fast enough for it to be viable in competitive play.

The phantasm abilities are on a long cooldown and predictable.

You are faced with more hard counters as Phantasm: Medi Guard, Rangers, Thieves

It has low survivability against both burst and condition damage.

You can’t contribute well in team fights.

Please indicate your main/preferred class for sPvP before posting any suggestions.

The purpose of this thread is to try and gather some ideas from the community on how Mesmers could be changed. All feedback will be welcomed, but I would prefer commentary from people who do not play Mesmers as their main character.

I am well aware of the challenges Mesmers have… nevertheless, I am looking at the current state of the class with “Mesmer Goggles” on my eyes.

Bottom line is that I may exhibit one-sidedness while attempting to scrutinize the root cause behind some of the issues I’m experiencing with my class.

Some of my personal observations are outlined below:

Lack of diversity in builds:

Currently, Shatter Mesmers are the only recognized build in top tier competition. (Go glass or go home)

Condi builds are lacklustre in all their forms including but not limited to the triple signet clone death build (which is a build I love the concept of).

Mesmers have no viable bunker option.

Very few strong options for utility slots. Portal and Blink are almost mandatory in organized play.

Low Mobility

Very difficult for shatters to hit a good player without circuitous set up and synergy with team mates

Hard countered by Thieves

Very susceptible to condi pressure

For those of you complaining about how much sense it makes for a turret to be affected by bleeds, poison, blind, etc. Ask yourself the same for mesmer clones which arent real flesh and bone and are mere figments of the imagination and have always been affected by conditions and crit damage.

So all I have to say to people who are against these changes is boohoo.

As a fellow Mesmer, I concur.

Not the fact that bows have unlimited ammunition with no quiver, or that these flintlock style pistols and rifles are semi-automatic, or that attacking the left pinky toe of a 80 foot dragon will kill it, or that leaping through smoke and covering myself in ashes will somehow turn me invisible or….trails off

Exactly… these people who keep crying about broken “immersion” and is willing to sacrifice gameplay irritates me so much.

Conditions damage specs need some love. “A gate can’t bleed, you aren’t allowed to do any damage to it.”

I love the idea of having conditions work against them. I think this should also be the case for all objects in the game.

are you freaking kidding me? Mesmer is out of the meta currently, is hard countered by thieves? You might as well remove Mesmer with your suggestions.

We are hard countered by Thieves. But Thieves aside, shatter is a very valuable and viable build.

many other classes have more than one “viable” build in sPvP, currently there’s mTD condi shatter for Mesmer that’s gaining some recognition, but beyond that there’s no other “viable” builds. The point is Mesmer and few other classes are not in meta, and to make sPvP better we need as many classes can compete in high tiers of the competition. Thieves pretty much is a better option than Mesmers and Rangers at that level, and that needs to be addressed.

Oh don’t get me wrong. I’m in 100% agreement with you. Mesmers need some serious buffs especially when it comes to the variety of playstyle (or lack thereof).

Not everyone enjoys the idea of glassy burst builds or bunker builds.

I understand the whole realism aspect of DoT’s affecting objects. But I am one of those people who are strongly against making them immune to condition damage. That includes bleeds, confusion, torment etc.

As awful as “that other game” is/was… I think a lot of people will agree that Huttball was a LOT of fun. I remember logging in just to play Huttball for hours on end.

10/0/0/30/30 worked best for me, however running venoms gave much more pressure in team fights so testing some other Condi s/d builds now…

Only thing tho is that improv trait is so OP when you get double caltrops on a point.

Metabattle canned the build? Why? I thought it was pretty effective when I played it.

I just re-read the OP. I have 100% respect for Phantaram but I disagree with his suggestion/nerf for Guardian.

The synergy is good I agree, but Guardians have a unique gamplay where there is an ebb and flow of decent synergy followed soonafter by massive vulnerability.

Although my evidence is anecdotal as is Phanta’s, my observation puts Guardian as a 1 trick pony at best with a lot of counterplay.

Along with Mesmers and Rangers I feel like Guardian is yet another class that needs viable alternatives.

Bunker or gimmicky burst doesn’t cut it.

All I know is that as a Mesmer player I’m frustrated by our lack of versatility as a class. It’s shatter or go home.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that there are other alternatives… nevertheless, they will never see the light of day in top tier brackets.

I can’t think of any real solutions off the top of my head, but there needs to be alternatives for Mesmer outside of a glassy, bursty build.

And Portal shouldn’t be a MUST have as it currently is.

I just tried your build but I used Sleight of Hand instead of Bewildering Ambush because I can’t afford to purchase it (stupid system).

All in all though. It is a very strong build.

Switching classes is treated just like any other disconnect. The game doesn’t know if you’ve gone to character select, or chopped your internet connection with an axe.

Is there a way that when you disconnect and log back in, it automatically loads you back into the pvp map on the class you were originally playing?

That would fix 2 problems. The double loading screen (very annoying) and people switching classes during a match.

Basically you would block people from swapping classes after a match starts and as a bonus it would get rid of the double loading screen and pop your right back into a match when you relog.

So what builds are considered "hard?"

Glass mantra mesmer is harder than shatter mesmer IMO – micromanaging 4 mantras in a zerker build has to be the hardest thing in the game.

Here’s an idea how about instead of dishonored they just remove a players chance to vote for X number of matches.

It’s impossible for me to get dishonored, because I don’t really “AFK”… I play, but with extreme mediocrity.

I just move around enough and hit people enough to not get dishonored, but I don’t try to win at all.

I’m a free kill.

As harsh as this may sound… this is all too true. Their leaderboard is literally the worst I have seen of any game I have ever played.

And I play a lot of games.

We have a very small PvP scene. Everyone knows and accepts who all the best players are.

None of the best players are represented in the top tier of the current leaderboard.

The leaderboard is failure incarnate.

No difference except ~10 minutes in queue times! You can literally queue unranked, find a Skyhammer/Spirit Watch/Courtyard game, AFK the match, leave the game, queue again, and find another game on a real map all before one ranked queue pops! I think I’ll take that option!

In WOW if you had a really high mmr and there was no one quing around mmr you would get matched with a lesser team. If the lesser team lost they would either lose 0 or not a lot of points while you would only gain like 1-3 points (which is not a lot since your rating is prob around 2.6-2.8k).

Perfect solution.

We dont have enough players, so the que time will be even longer.

I rather wait in queue for 48 days and get a good leaderboard than queue up and get a match in 5 seconds to be stuck with a stupid leaderboard.
