The only one that sounds remotely interesting is Communal Defense.

It depends on how fast the Aegis effect is added to your allies. Does it reapply fast enough that Shelter would become essentially 3 seconds of immunity for your party if you are blocking something like a 100b or flamethrower?

Still, it competes with AH and MF…

The only place where this trait would be welcome is WvWvW where there is a reason that Applied Fortitude is a “Must get” trait. 2500 extra health is quite a bonus and now we can throw another 3000 on top of that.

That being said….I’d love the rangers “Read the wind” instead. Imagine. Orb’s of Wrath at twice the speed? /faint.

However like I also said. Even if they did that there would STILL be this thread because people simply put the autoplay feature on and will never see it just the same.

There are actually FEWER people that look at the launcher than there are people who look at the forums.

The actual problem is that they game rewards bad play. If you die at an event because you fail to dodge things EVERY SINGLE TIME you are still rewarded the same as someone who performed flawlessly.

What they need is a sliding scale of reward.

As I suggested in another post in regards to the knights. Give players that get participation 1 chest.

Players that avoid getting hit by the boss mechanics get 3 bonus chests.

Players that get hit only once get 2 bonus chests.

Players that get hit 2-3 times get 1 bonus chest.

Players that get hit more get no bonus chest.

Now players are rewarded for skillful play.

So what do you want them to do? Program every NPC to have a “I am going to die” date on them? Then the outrage would be “Who reads NPC text?!?” How about a giant 48 pt font on a pop-up that must be clicked in order to proceed to playing that says “I have read this news statement”. Then the outrage would be “That’s like an EULA. I didn’t read it. It was annoying and in my way to play the game!”

They simply cannot give out information that every last player will receive without some issue.

I mean, look at the forums sometime. We just recently had someone post about buying light dungeon armor even though it has red text that says “Not useable” on it. There are dozens of posts about the “Unique” tag on ascended items. There are still people that have no idea that glory boosters were going to become useless. I’m sure a month from now there will be someone saying “Why is my glory booster not working?”

A post on the official forums in the announcements section a week in advance is absolutely the correct way to give the information. They could also add a link to the launcher but as I said. No one reads that anyway as well.

Anet has a history of poor communications. Sometimes all they do is post on twitter or facebook. (A medium not directly related to Anet.)

This time however they posted the information. They posted the information in the correct location. They posted the information in the correct location with plenty of advanced warning.

The only thing they could have done better would have been to post a link in the launcher itself. But be realistic. Nothing would have changed. Most players have “Autoplay” turned on and don’t even look at the launcher.

If they hadn’t posted correct information in the correct location in enough of an advanced warning. Then I could get behind the return of the vendor like I got behind the return of the scarlet lair chests.

I do generally read the links that are posted in the launcher (which includes all release notes), I just don’t want to have to chronically peruse the forums to keep current with other, game impacting and potentially detrimental changes.

While I agree that it would be better if they added the information in a link on the launcher itself, but be realistic. There’s FEWER people that read the launcher than the forums. Most people simply have “Autoplay” checked and launch the game and then step away from the computer to come back to the screen asking to choose a character.

Putting a link in the launcher would have changed nothing at all.

Not utilizing the official forums to learn about what is happening in the game is simply willful ignorance. Ignorant people get burned by things that the well informed do not.

They cannot bring back the vendor because people have deleted extra heirlooms/belongings because they read the forum.

I could get behind returning the vendor if they did NOT do so. Like I got behind them returning the chests to scarlets lair. They failed on their communication for the chests and that is what warranted the return of the chest.

However the information was posted. It was posted in the right place. It was posted in the right place and with plenty of time.

The only people to blame are the willfully ignorant.

The only thing they could have done better was to link that information directly from the launcher, but we would have another class of ignorant people complaining if they did that because almost everyone has autoplay turned on and they never look at the launcher anyway.

In the past, Anet has made the mistake if putting information on places like Facebook and Twitter which is a terrible idea as there are many people who do not use such media. They have an official forum for official information. They should use that.

That being said, at least this time they DID post and they did post it in the RIGHT PLACE. (News and Announcements.)

There is no digging required, and the launcher does link to the forums.

Even if they put the information in the launcher we would have people here complaining because they set it to AutoPlay and never bother to look.

Personally I consider this a willful ignorance of the players. The information was there, it was in the right place, and it was timely. Those who did not get the memo did so on their own accord.

  • Save your blade shards as they will have another use later.

In like 48pt font.

Can even make it a mobile app. TEXT: GW2INFO and it sends you a text with that.

I don’t deny that the unique on the rings could be better described and more prominent. Hover text should be placed on it so that if people hover over the word it will describe it’s function.

However, ignorance is ignorance and the only cure is information. Moving ahead without curing ignorance is a recipe for disaster.

People who don’t play MMO’s should be EXTRA careful because they are not knowledgeable of almost everything in the game. They should be spending even more time reading the wiki for things they do not comprehend.

Not doing so is a choice of the player, and there are consequences for that choice.

Till they change it to have a better description or mouseover text or (I hope it never comes to exist) a stupid pop-up box, the onus is on the player to learn about it.

Still, the only recourse is as suggested. Open a support ticket.

Unique is a standard item type in MMO’s.

It pretty much means that you can only have 1.

If you don’t understand something you can also type /wiki unique and it will bring up the wiki to explain it.

Sorry you made a mistake like when someone says a word you don’t understand, you need to look it up.

Also, it’s much better to purchase rings with pristine fractal relics and upgrading them that way.

I think what more people should try to understand is that it is not a crime to be bad at a boss. Not even after doing the Marionette for a week straight. It’s not lazy if you are bad, nor is it your fault. It’s just unfortunate. I don’t blame other players when they die at a boss, especially one that is temporary. Some people need more time to become familiar with a fight.

No it’s not a crime to be bad at a boss. Failure happens. The issue is consistent failure without learning and without improving. The issue is that Guild Wars does not teach basic mechanics and instead reinforces poor habits. The issue is that any lump on a log failure of a player is rewarded the exact same amount as the perfect execution of an elite player.

How much time do these people require to become even slightly competent at the most basic of boss mechanics?

That may be true, but it is at least a gauge at how new someone is to the game. If you really do not want to teach people about the game then refusing low AP players into your group is a good way of doing so.

An account that has been playing the game for a year will already have X achievement points because the game can’t help but throw them at you. (You killed 5000 monsters! Here, have 25 AP!)

You are right. It’s not a skill gauge. It is a skill filter however. Sometimes when you cast a net, you get the octopus with the fish you are looking to catch.

Please don’t delete them!

You can hold on to your extra blade shards, as the team will be adding something later which will allow you to convert the shards to something of value. Dev will be announcing more on that later. Thanks!

Any chance you can increase the stack size? I have a few thousand of them.

Isn’t there a bank expansion that does this? Or is that just for for crafting mats…

It only expands existing depositable items.

Like you can increase the size of the tab to hold 1000 sprockets, but since blade shards do not have a depositable slot. It does not affect them.

or, and this might be a shock to some ppl, have the WP cost nothing when you die.
when you die you have to pay 3X….

  • you have to pay the WP
  • you have to repair your armor
  • you have a death penalty

ppl who dies already have a hard time, at least lower the penalty in one way or another.

ps. i do find it quite selfish to just let everyone be dead, if you are able to revive them then why not help them?
if they die right at the feet of the legendary or champion enemy then yes i understand but when someone is away from the boss then there is no reason not ressing.

No one in here is even discussing random dead people lying in the middle of the field.

We are specifically discussing people who are dead at an event that is currently in action.

Those people should never be rezzed and they should be waypointing. The cost is theirs to bear for failure to dodge. That’s the tiniest of tiny "punishments’ till they learn how to avoid death.

Because all the information was provided in game chat. The information in guides was brought to the players. They didn’t have to go to another website to learn. It was provided to them. These people still did not learn.

People were still facing warden 1 with it’s back to the edge of the platform.
People were still kiting in giant circles on warden 2 and never dragging over mines.
People were still not paying attention to the “bombs” and dying to warden 3.
People were still unable to dodge warden 4’s attacks.
People were still spreading out on warden 5 and running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Detailed information was hand delivered to people and they still failed to learn. Day after day after day after day.

I can think of many other reasons for why that may happen:

  • maybe the people that were failing had not tried the content yet.
  • maybe they were confused about the lane and warden system.
  • maybe some players became disoriented, or forgot a strategy during the fight.
  • maybe some players had their chat turned off.
  • maybe some players are very new to the game, and are still learning the basics.
  • maybe some players were not paying as much attention as they should be.
  • maybe some of the players did not have English as their native language.

How do you eliminate all these possibilities, and conclude that they were all lazy? It seems more like an emotional response to me, rather than an accurate analysis of why the event was failing half the time. It also seems a bit hostile, and nonconstructive.

Then you need to go back and read my first post.

The game breeds failure. There is no introduction to boss mechanics. Gameplay encourages people to sit like lumps on logs pressing 1 all day till they show up at an event and spend more time dirtnapping than pressing 1.

These failures of players are also rewarded as well as the people who perform flawlessly. There is no incentive to improve because “Everyone gets the trophy!”

I have no issue with people who fail, and learn. I have issue with people who consistently fail. I don’t care how new you are at the game. After doing content for a week straight, you should have learned the content by now.

I can specifically recall singular players who I saw on day 1, who are STILL failing miserably on day 8. If there weren’t rules against it I could list their names right here. These are the players that I take umbrage with. These are the lumps on the log that ride coattails to get rewarded for their poor gameplay.

During the marionette fights people took it upon themselves to spend the first 10 minutes of the fight detailing EVERYTHING about the fight. How to deal with each and every warden. Information about the lane phases. Describing where each lane was. And repeating this information before the next boss was encountered.

Still there was consistent failure on the more difficult wardens.

You can write as many guides as you want. People are too lazy to improve and will never read them. Even if you read them to them IN THE GAME ITSELF.

It simply does not matter.

Woa, how did we jump from people explaining the fight, to people being lazy? So there was consistent failure on many servers, that is true. But how did you deduce that this was due to laziness? Could it be that perhaps even with instructions, the warden fights were challenging for some players other than yourself?

You know if the people who spent so much time whining in this thread spent half as much time writing up clear and detailed guides on how to do the content the right way, and then pointing new players in game to links to that guide, then the issue probably wouldnt be as big of a deal.

I bet 95% of those “bad” players dont read the forums or other online guides and have no idea about any of this stuff and only play the game for a few hours a week. This game has terrible in game hints/tutorials and people rarely give good advice in map chat other than “wear zerk gear or gtfo”. Temporary content doesnt really help either since slower learning players probably will take 2 weeks to figure it out themselves and by then its gone

Except that this didn’t help AT ALL.

I have tried to make this thread 3 times now.

Worded differently but….

1. Living story should have mini boss encounters that teach mechanics like having a mini lyssa temple event (Don’t face the boss!), mini warden 2 boss (Kite it through it’s own mine!), mini assault knight (Don’t stand in the fire!).

This will teach mechanics in a format where you cannot rely on a zerg. The most you can have is 5 people. It may however just cause the really bad players to seek coattails to ride since it’s not a solo encounter. “Buying personal story 4!”

2. Loot becomes a sliding scale. Instead of everyone who defeats the knight gets 6 chests. How about everyone who defeats the knight gets 2 chests. If you never get hoovered in you get 4 bonus chests. If you only get hoovered once you get 2 bonus chests, hoovered 2-3 times? 1 bonus chest. 4 or more times? You get nothing but basic rewards.

Basically I find that players have no incentive to learn simple mechanics. They are rewarded just as well as the person who doesn’t get hit by any of the mechanics and plays flawlessly. These players ride the coattails of others and are rewarded for doing so.

Better answer is if you simply cannot tell? Don’t rez anyone at all.

Your personal survival is far more important than someone who is downed.
Your personal survival is overwhelmingly more important than someone who is dead.

However there are many ways to tell.

1. They have a fully 0’d out health bar. A downed player will have some pseudo life at least.
2. They are fully flat on their back when dead. A downed player is half way up and moving like they are twitching in pain. They may even have particle effects shooting out of them.

So if you personally can’t make the distinction for whatever reason (Particle effect overabundance without the ability to turn them off is another issue entirely.) then play the safe route. Don’t rez anyone at all. Leave it to others. You are better spent dealing damage to the boss and paying attention to giant AE circles on the ground. Surviving to deal the DPS needed to win.

Don’t avoid events. Just try to get better. Learn. Improve yourself. Learn why something is detrimental to the whole even though it’s actually something you want to do on a normal basis.

Perhaps they should introduce new “mini-achievements”. Getting the mini-achievement gives you bonus loot from an event on a sliding scale.

For example:

On the knight – Winning the event gives you 6 chests and cores. If you also managed to avoid getting caught in the hoover the entire fight you get an additional 2 chests. If you got caught 1-2 times you get 1 bonus chest. 3 or more and you only get the basic reward.

Something like that.

So everyone gets the basic reward, and those who actually play and play well are rewarded for doing so…

Of course it will happen, but if enough people learn to leave the dead where they are, those dead will never get event credit (Bob will be dead too soon enough.) and maybe just maybe they will realize that they won’t get their precious rez in an event and waypoint because they really want the loot.

You are right that saying it in chat does nothing because neither does explaining fight mechanics. We learned that with the Marionette.

But here, anyone who clicks this link, we CAN inform as to why it’s a terrible idea to rez the fully dead. They are here. They are reading already. Maybe, just maybe, they will comprehend the reasons.

And again maybe not. But at least I can try here to an audience that physically decides to read the information by clicking the post in the first place.

3. Engage spider IMMEDIATELY.
4. It will cocoon someone. Focus that cocoon entirely. Don’t worry about damaging The spider at all. Only cocoons.

If you are paying attention and you can trigger the cocoon yourself instead of letting a “troll” do it, you are the one setting the rules for the engagement. Then the only time they can get cocooned is by 1 in X chance where X is the number of people engaged in the fight. And since you have 10 people who’s SOLE PURPOSE is to kill cocoons. It doesn’t matter if the troll DOES get cocooned you have enough to destroy the cocoon without him helping from inside.

Sell your trash blue item and BAM waypoint cost is paid for. You get SIX CHESTS from a knight event and they are FULL of blue and green crap. You easily get 20 or more waypoints from just that. Let alone any rewards from the event and mobs you kill before the event.

Waypoint costs are PITIFUL.

1% my kitten .

I’m not trying to be mean, Kumu Honua, but, in personal chat, I heard a (possible) reason…

INSERT NAME is yelling in map to “Use WP! Use WP!”

I sent /tell to dead friend “Why aren’t you using the WP? It’s right there.”

Friend = “INSERT NAME isn’t worth the 2 sp”.

Me = “But you realise you’ll make 20x that on even a partial win.”

Friend = “That’s assuming we win. But even so, INSERT NAME ***STILL*** isn’t worth the 2sp.”

Names kept vague as per the “no call out” policy of ANET. But, I do think that’s part of it. Some (granted, likely very frustrated due to fails) people screams in /map about WP. Others passively aggressively don’t WP, just cuz.

And, the thing is, until ANET says otherwise, staying dead is not reportable…

(Trying to stay neutral because I’m friends IRL with this person, but I also see the problem of just staying dead…)

This is just where we need to get people into the mindset of NOT helping fully dead people. Who cares about the 1-2-3 person upscale. It’s not enough to bother. Maybe if they are dead for the entire fight and get ZERO reward they will start waypointing themselves.

The problem is there are people who are not aware that rezzing these people is actually bad for the event as a whole and they still try (And become dead themselves 90% of the time)

Rez the downed, Leave the dead. The mantra of GW2 events.

They’d be allowed to only use what coin they can generate through playing events and loot drops sold to merchants. Any coin that is sent to the accounts from other players, personal farm accounts, or converting gems to coin will be frozen with the wealth.

Make them eat their own words and realize that the 99% can’t afford to WP ALL the time because of the selfish 1%. Bring them to our level and remind them where they started before they became the 1%.

FYI, the Elementalist has a glyph that when attuned to Earth will resurrect 3 players/NPCs from the DEAD state. Best part, it is NOT an elite skill.

GW2 incentive to learn fight mechanics.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

We have seen that players are unable or unwilling to learn fight mechanics. Even events that have existed since the games release are full of players that cannot or will not learn mechanics.

Players all through their entire leveling time learned that the only way to fight things is to stand in one spot and press 1. No need to dodge, no need to position, no need to attune, no need to use certain types of skills at certain times and avoid in other situation. No mechanics at all.

How can guild wars 2 give incentive to players to learn mechanics? How can they do this without resorting to removing the “Kiddy Pool” level of skilled players enjoyment of the game?

Is it even possible?

I suggest that the personal story should include mini versions of temple of lyssa fights where they are taught positional awareness as a mechanic. They need mini warden 2 fights with specific requirements to actually harm the opponent. They need mini assault knights to learn the importance of dodging highly telegraphed attacks.

In an environment where a player can be forced to have to start over if they cannot learn the mechanic instead of being resurrected by a zerg. They actually learn to start paying attention to these types of details.

As it is currently the game never teaches these mechanics and the outcome is that you can see half of the 50 people at an assault knight get hoovered every single time.

Anyone else have other options for guild wars 2 to give incentive to players to actually learn mechanics instead of bad habits from over simplified PvE gameplay?

They have an entire weekend full of threads to wade through. Did you see the sheer amount of volume there was? You can’t expect them to jump right into it?

Besides. They rarely comment on anything of value anyway.

Perhaps someone here can tell me why skills such as the Elementalist revive don’t work on dead players.

In theory, they’re great skills and I love them, especially the Elementalist one. The fact that it somewhat changes how it works based on your elemental attunement is awesome. But… Most of the time, by the time I get changed to the element I need and can fire it off, they’re either revived or dead. And if they’re dead, the power fails to do anything.

If the powers worked on dead players as well, I think more people would be willing to use them, as they’d be a better and faster alternative to slowly reviving the person OR waiting for them to return from a waypoint. As it is now, you’re usually better off slotting another skill and reviving the fallen only. So, why are they limited like that?

People have been constantly telling them to buff the skill as in the current form they are almost universally crappy skills. (Warrior banner is an exception of course)

Depends on the destination and the ended desire.

Do you want more wvwvw participation? More population over all? Specific content like Wurms/Tequatl?

You will have to do research to see if it’s feasible and which server has what you are looking for specifically.

[Event] Frustrations with Knight fights.

While I cant speak about other servers, in general BP is more of a disorganized farm server than anything else and if it cant be zerged, then its ignored. Even temple runs can be frustrating at times because people will fail to follow simple directions….

They removed my post about players simply becoming worse at actually playing MMO’s, but this is a side effect of that.

No matter how long an event has existed the unwashed masses will be terrible if there are any mechanics at all.

You can see it especially at something that has an interesting mechanic like Lyssa temple.

How often do you see people never looking away? All the time…

They communicate through the official website located at: www.guildwars2.com

Sorry to say but the only time I browse this website is when I’m bored at work. That doesn’t happen every month.

I suspect the majority of the player base never touches this website.

That would be their fault then. On the login splash screen, links are provided to update players about the latest happenings. Be it patch notes or planned changes, Anet does a great job communicating via their official website and forums.

Except for the times that they rely on twitter/facebook without making posts on the official websites. That irks me to no end.
