Read the submitting a ticket sticky under the tech support sub forum and do so, then post your success here and how you fixed it
Get help from someone who can look at your log files and find out what specifically is broken so they can tell you how to fix it.
Awesome. Glad you found your problem.
As I mentioned in my first post bad components or an underpowered system are the typical culprits for sudden system shutdowns, right up there with overheating.
Gw2 is a resource hog, more so than most other games and applications. If something is faulty or poorly ventilated or not powered enough, this game will find it for you.
Mr pants, you should try troubleshooting the problem via the methods above as well, once you rule out overheating (despite the only occasional expression of this problem), then you can narrow it down to a hardware malfunction. But heat is the easiest and cheapest fix. Also, some say re-applying thermal paste to processors helps too… After a good cleaning.
There are a lot of threads about this lately.
Most issues with the tp on Mac can be solved by deleting the contents of the gw2 folder.
1. Find the folder
Mine is located under the HIDDEN Library folder (a hidden folder shows in grey text when it is visible in finder)
/[yourharddrivename]/users/[yourusername]/library/application support/guild wars 2
2. Make a backup of said folder by copying and pasting it somewhere (desktop)
3. Delete the contents of that specific folder (you should see files like this contained within “config, dyndata.dat, user.reg, userdef.reg, and folders p_drive and wineserver…namestuff…loca..[long name]” just to list a few)
4. then re-run the client.
If you can’t see/find this folder, follow these instructions:
http://m.wikihow.com/See-Hidden-Folders-on-Mac-OS-X-and-Other-Recent-Models
Then proceed with the instructions.
Let me know how you make out.
Ero, if you’re using a regular Mac keyboard, follow the instructions I gave you initially. But you still should’ve had options for the other somewhere… Even my cheap mouse came with software to manipulate how my buttons work.
I thought it was like a timed thing similar to sheathing weapons while out of combat, but on some internal timer based on when you activated it. This happens to me constantly… The worst is trying to drop the #3 grenade, but the weapon switched and I pull extra baddies with the #3 pistol attack lol. (forgetting names in a major way today)
But yes, I can confirm this seems to happen almost randomly. I just try to be very aware of my sounds as you can hear it switch.
Sorry to hear she’s having issues
I may or may not be able to help you, but I’ll try. If I can’t, she definitely needs to look at the sticky for submitting a ticket and do so. This way, Anet pros can help her personally and get her up and running again. Then you guys can post back here to help others lol.
First note, it seems many have started having d/c issues and high lag/latency in the last couple weeks (since a minor update about 2 weeks ago) and second, the Mac forums aren’t really being supported by Anet lately, so submit a ticket or try your luck at the pc tech support forum (but they just kind of ignore us there lol). 3rd, every computer is different and every home Internet setup is different so not all solutions may work for her due to individual circumstances. And I know nothing of her setup or computer.
These steps only work on home setups, not university or public connections due to lack of control over the latter.
Make sure she tries playing with any firewalls (including router/modem ones) or anti-virus software disabled and if the issue still occurs, re-enable (if not, gw2 needs to have exceptions made and ports authorised, as listed below in the first link)
Have her try these things under code 7:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8994/~error-codes
I personally use QoS with high priority, but each setup is different.
If the d/c still occurs, she should check her connection to the server and the routing:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9245
There are examples listed so she can see if it’s her issue, her isp’s or possibly server side. (this works well if you can test it prior to a disconnect lol or during times of lag, but it is very valuable to know what optimal speeds look like by checking during off-peak times like early in the morn or after midnight)
I’ve never personally had the issue with port 80, my disconnects were due to my wireless card switching wireless bands (2.4ghz or 5ghz) due to signal degradation and recovery since I have a dual-band router. It would occur randomly and very quickly, but that small change was enough to make the sensitive servers drop me.
Let me know how you guys make out with this. Hopefully, this easy fix is her ticket to smooth play.

<.< well that’s not going to do you any good. Still check your keyboard settings in the location above, it’s possible there is a setting for something. It’s also possible a keyboard like that has an app with settings of it’s own, if I’m not mistaken, may want to check those and if you don’t have that, see if they exist and install it. (reasoning: most mouse and keyboard stuff comes with its own app for programming keys and input settings)
Bugger, I highly recommend you submit a ticket.
That code is exactly what I used to repair mine…
/Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/Cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair
Just copied and pasted from my comp again to make sure I didn’t miss something… Watch those 2 sets of double dashes. The only difference I see is a lower case c in cider vs a capital.
I’m sorry this didn’t work for you. Definitely check out the sticky for submitting a ticket and have at it, at least then, you’ve got the professionals to view your log files and such and actually tell you what is going on.
Mr pants, sounds like you’re overheating. You should definitely give the inside of your comp a good thorough cleaning, including fans and heat sinks.
Make sure you’re monitoring your CPU and gpu temps. Get a baseline for when the system is idle, get one on a game or app that taxes it a bit (for a midrange reading), then try it with gw2. Gw2 taxes the CPU more so than it does the gpu, but it is just hard on system resources in general… Kind of a selfish program lol, but seriously, it really uses as much of a system as it can.
FYI, systems shut down instantly if they detect that they are getting too hot to prevent damage to components. Many times, you will experience lag spikes or frame rate dips prior to a shut down, but not always.
Gw2 is very intense on a laptop and definitely generates more heat that most other games.
Glad to hear the fan is working, if you can get one of the cooling pads, it might help a bit more as well. And opening any laptop is a huge undertaking. Just take your time and stay focused… And careful lol. Definitely sounds like heat was your issue, so a thorough internal cleaning won’t hurt a bit… It can only help.
Can’t think of anything else myself atm, but let us know how things go with nvidia. Good luck.
I think they want peeps to submit tickets so they can pinpoint what exactly is causing the issue, if enough peeps give them enough info, they’ll be able to eventually determine if it’s the client, some problem with the way the client is interacting with something on your end, or a bug in the code, or even server side depending on the issue being investigated.
It is possible that they aren’t saying anything because the majority of peeps actually contacting them are truly having issues due to a corrupted file or bad drivers or conflicting applications. It may or may not be something caused by their code.
Submit a ticket!
Thank you thank you thank you so much!
Btw, the Mac client is the only one I can get a full crash on.
It has been one full week now and we are still awaiting a response. Any word?
Will this also work for the Mac peeps who were also experiencing this issue?
Can anyone else check or acknowledge this? I really would like to see if any others have this issue.
This is the only crash I’ve had on either system other than the crashes that occurred after the culling update in WvW on the Mac. PC has never crashed otherwise, but that one doesn’t go into WvW either.
Thanks for posting that Andrea, didn’t have time to search for it before. But there you go.
And sometimes a moderator is all we’re good enough to get… at least they’re active on these forums, unlike the Mac client forums lol.
For anyone else:
Quoted from pc tech support thread:
Hey everyone! I’m happy to say that the programming team was able to implement a fix for this issue with last night’s build (thank you Katody for providing us with your log information so quickly!).
If you have not already done so, take the time to re-launch your client and allow it to run for at least ten minutes. It should eventually return the “connection failure…retrying” message. At this point, let it sit for another few minutes as the backup mechanism kicks in and downloads the missing file.
If you are still unable to patch the final file after giving the client time to re-connect, please take the time to generate a -log file and either post it here or submit a ticket to support.
Thanks, again, for your patience, and good hunting!
ArenaNet QA Team
Did you replace the large dash before the word USE with 2 small dashes as stated? Also, why does it say -repaircider? It should only say -repair
The forums are screwy and keep replacing 2 of these – with one of these —
You should note which map this is occurring on. Also are you having issues with other characters in other maps. If you can’t get an answer here, you should check the sticky on submitting a ticket and have at it, giving as much detail as possible, especially which map and character.
Question, map loading screen, you mean the regular loading screen or when loading the map? The thread topic sounds unclear as to which.
They replied to this on the WvW forums as mention in this thread previously.
You should really read some of the other threads about this, I know I’ve personally commented on several already as have many others. There are a lot lately, just look through the first few pages here. Definitely could be overheating though.
Liquid Swords, your moving without pressing keys is actually some input bug with the game that has not been addressed.
The fix: whatever direction your character is moving (without the key pressed), press that key! Ex. If your character is stuck spinning to the right, hit D or right arrow key to get them to stop. Running forward uncontrollably, hit W.
It’s random and seems to be associated with hitting multiple keys at a time. But no official word has been mentioned that I have seen.
As for LAG and disconnects, I only experienced it after the weekly patch over a week ago and that mostly cleared up within a couple days. I still experience spurts of lag and input lag and baddie rubberbanding. I did have a random disconnect the other day oddly enough, my first one since I fixed the issue with my dual-band wireless router switching bands and causing disconnects for me.
Use a traceroute to see if it’s ISP related or Anet servers. I’ve been finding excessive latency once I hit Anet servers (600ms + at times), but I’m also seeing up to 300ms in the Chicago (level3 service areas) area due to the route my ISP uses. But even with that cleared up, Anet still seems sporadic in getting high latencies.
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9245/kw/Lag
This helps too:
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8994/~error-codes
Use error code 7. I use QoS rather than port forwarding and it still helps.
Most likely mailbox full. You can only have 10 mails from the gem store or other players show at a time, but you will not get the “mailbox is full” message if you still have in-game mails from playing or from the gem store. Tell him to delete some of his in-game mails and player mails.
FYI, gold spammers like to hit the mailboxes of the unsuspecting. ;p
When you say “the heat did not exceed 40 degrees” I’m guessing you mean Celsius, but my question is, what heat and where? CPU, gpu, internal chassis temp? What exactly are you monitoring? It is possible to still have the system shut down if only one component is overheating. The game will NEVER cause this. However, it still sounds like an overheating issue, otherwise, you need to run a hardware diagnostic since bad hardware can cause these symptoms. Bad ram, bad processor, bad motherboard, or not enough power from your psu can cause this. Dust build up can cause this also, open your system and give it a thorough cleaning around heat sinks and fans.
Do you have any additional components installed (cd drives, input panels for digital sound, etc)? A 700w should power what you have though I think.
Last question, are you having any noticeable lag or frame rate dips prior to the random shut down? Sometimes it presents itself if gpu or CPU are overheating. (I’m lead to believe it’s possibly overheating based on your description of lasting 3 hours on lowest settings)
2 ways most likely.
1. While in game, hold down the function key [Fn] while pressing f1, f2, etc. it is typically located on the lower left side of the keyboard next to [control].
2. This method is system wide and will require you to have to use the above method any time you want to adjust the volume or screen brightness or to pause/play music etc using the f1-f12 keys. Go to system preferences>keyboard>keyboard (tab) and tick the option to “Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys.” This will allow you to just use f1-f12 like normal keys in game, but now you have to hold [Fn] to adjust the volume and screen brightness all the time. You may switch between the 2 modes any time.
Hope this helps you.
I personally vendor almost everything but greens that make profit and have never had this issue. But I’ve never had more than 1.5 screens of items for sale at one time.
Have you added or replaced any recent new components to your chassis lately that uses power? If not, you may need to run a system diagnostic of some sort (forget the windows equivalents). This could be an overheating CPU (or system overall if fans aren’t working or not enough) as mentioned, bad ram, sometimes a bad hard drive could cause similar issues, faulty motherboard, or even a bad power supply as mentioned.
Newer, stronger, or excessive components tend to use more power requiring a heavier duty power supply. If you’ve recently upgraded any components or added something new (even adding one fan can overload an already taxed psu), you may need to upgrade to a higher wattage power supply unit. GW2 uses more systems resources than most games or programs and therefore needs more power to keep this excessive use cool.
Follow Lex’s instructions. Check your unit temps while idle and while taxed, also, make sure the cooling fan on your processor is working.
Free camera is working just fine on the Mac. If free camera is enabled (ticked), the left mouse button moves the camera, but the character stays facing the original direction (even if using w to move forward). Right mouse button rotates the camera, but will also re-orient the character (so if you push w to move forward, your character will move in the direction the camera is facing). With free camera disabled (un-ticked), both left and right mouse buttons will rotate the camera and the character will follow.
If you are having issues with that working as described, you may need to delete the contents of the gw2 folder (it might help). Let me know if you need those and I will post the instructions here for you. But as of right now, I can confirm that free camera works just fine on Mac.

I agree with ilithus, 80C under low burden is pretty hot. Mine runs 89C after running gw2 for hours on end consistently…never much hotter than that and around 45C idle. you may have actually found your problem there. If after you’ve followed through with the instructions above for (at the very least) cleaning out your system thoroughly, then you may have another issue. But right now, the temperature is killing you. Try that and check back.
Sadly, this wasn’t fixed in the update. This bug was introduced in the march 26th update.
If you go to the Ruins of Rin, you can watch several hawks flying around there with bursts of light radiating from their chests across the screen. This is also true for ranger pet hawks.
It makes me sad that possible nudity bugs are addressed immediately, a bug that may not be consistent and probably only found by a small number of people…where this one can be seen by all Mac users… Quick hawks!!! strip off your feathers! Lol
I’m on the Mac client and I’ve noticed this a few times in Diessa Plateau in and around Meatoberfest. If I spin my camera certain ways, certain areas get a green hue to them. I filed an in-game bug report as it didn’t seem crucial, but I just wanted to confirm that someone else has experienced something similar. Although I have not had this occur with my ui, just in-game graphics.
I’ve read some peeps need to roll back their drivers. You may also want to make sure that windows is fully updated including optional and hardware updates. And maybe follow up with checking direct x. You should probably post some of your systems specs including your vid card for others to see and maybe make suggestions. If you can’t fix it, submit a ticket.
Just curious as to how we could remind you guys that we’re still waiting for a promised answer without abusing the system. We’re all dying of suspense here
I use mine for WvW and it works fine. There were some hiccups following the culling update, but it hasn’t been so bad. More of my problems came from connection issues caused by my router.
Oh boy. Glad to hear yours worked. That solution seems to work for some.
I’ve seen others say tickets can take up to 48 hrs. Crossing my fingers for you.
Read a recent post that said a full system restart fixed the issue for them. Several users commented that after they restarted their system, the download picked up where it left off and finished.
I personally have very few issues with the Mac client. I started on boot camp, but got tired of switching once the Mac version came out. I play exclusively on Mac now.
Sadly, the Mac forums are no longer supported (at least until otherwise stated by Anet), but you can get by with just a few troubleshooting steps that fix most issues. I’ve posted them a ton lately.
All that being said, we have some bugs that haven’t been fixed, but they’re so minor, you’ll probably barely notice.
Take the leap and enjoy your Mac windows free!!!
If you’re still following up on this and haven’t submitted a ticket, an Anet person posted this an hour ago on the pc tech forum:
“Hello everyone!
If you are currently unable to patch the final file, try restarting the client and allowing it to run for at least 10 minutes. At this point, the backup system should kick in and push the final file through to your system; if you receive the “Connection failure…retrying” message, don’t worry: this is the backup measure, and should download the last file after a few minutes.
If you continue to have trouble downloading the file, please contact support at
https://en.support.guildwars2.com/.
Thank you for your patience!"
Hopefully your issue resolved itself already though. (sorry I wasn’t able to help more)
Yeah, I’m really sorry this happened to you. Please do me a favour, look at the sticky on this forum about submitting a bug report and inform them of this issue you’re having. They just started suggesting the pc peeps do this, but still haven’t responded about the Mac. This seems to be a widespread issue.
If you do get a solution from them, please come back here and report your success and what your fix was for others.
Thanks! And good luck!
Well, then that means your router requires a wired connection to communicate with it and then you would use the Ethernet connection rather than wi-fi.
As a heads up, I’m trying to get help on the pc tech forum, other pc and Mac users are experiencing the same thing. But no one is responding to the maccies yet.
Let me know if you have access to your router and an Ethernet cable if so, follow the instructions as listed above, but replace “wi-fi” with “Ethernet”
Are there any helpful suggestions from our wonderfully busy devs to help the Mac users out who are having the same issues as the PC peeps?
Client stalls on the last 3 files, client restart does nothing. 1 file left, but no download occurring (0kb/sec). Waiting since the start of the patch to finish, but nothing is happening.
There is zero support on the Mac client forum and there are peeps who need help.
Thank you!
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
Okay, it’s a start. So this is a fairly new install, and it worked previously, prior to patch. If this is a home computer setup and not on a university wi-fi or public connection, we’re good to go.
To check your router, go to:
System preferences>Network>wi-fi>advanced>TCP/IP
Don’t post this info here, this is your setup stuff, but open a browser and type in the # listed after IPv4 address and hit enter
Login
You may have to dig around, but look around for “security settings” and/or “firewall”
Don’t change anything unless you know exactly what it is.
If you have a firewall enabled, you may need to disable it for now (re-enable it later)
Googling admin panel for your particular router makes this immensely easier. Also using the help features on each page.
For the steps listed above (for port forwarding or QoS), you will need to be logged on to your router as well.
If your os firewall is off and you haven’t installed any antivirus software or additional firewalls, you need to check your router or modem.
The first thing to know is if you are connected wirelessly or via cable. Do you use a router and modem or just one of those?
Side question, you have had the game running previously without issue, correct?
You didn’t hapen to accidentally delete any other gw2 content while searching for the library folder?
Sometimes when you close the launcher during the download, it shows that it has reset, but that is because it shows you in “files left”
I’m sorry you’re still having so much trouble.
Have you tried the router solutions? Also, please verify that you do not have a firewall running on your system or on your router. You will need to log onto your router for this.
Can you show a screen shot of this current state please (so I fully understand), thanks.
Oh boy, okay, you do have a hidden library folder though, correct? It will be a greyed out text and not typical black, you should also see heaps more files than before. Let’s start there.
Go to your hard drive, find the USERS folder, open the [your user name] file
Under there is where you should see a greyed out library folder
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
I’m currently trying to help 2 people in the Mac forums as well, but we’re not having any luck with usual Mac fixes. I’m hoping we can find a solution to this.
