ANet does this intentionally to keep the pros that are actually kitten players happy and playing their game. You just have to open your eyes and see that’s all ANet can do at this point.

You need to improve in map presence. I mean you apply really low pressure to the enemy and you make no surprise bursts at engageing. Also try to use your stealth offensively overall.
Second thing is a bit harder. You need to keep in mind what’s the enemy’s position on the map. Howmany/what classes are on what nodes and where they rotate. This makes your rotations and decaps much cleaner. There should be no “changed my mind” situations if you are half way to an objective.
I am a true Veteran of HotS (2400 games); my main is Zeratul; his basic ability is Blink on pretty short cooldown. I still die like a fly when i screw position.

Guard teleports are for some reason targeted or conditional, necro wurm can be killed and ghostwalk is very long cd, war haves some pretty short jump, rev and engi i think have nothing at all.
these classes have brutally tanky meta specs in gw2 with many on demand mitigations.

thanks. sometimes i dont want to write a wall of text.I like counterplay but I think this game needs more of it. For instance ele and scrapper obviously counterplay projectiles, but what counterplays scrapper? Answer isn’t as obvious.
Thief counter plays ele sure enough, but ele sticks with team fights which most thieves don’t do well in, thus counter negated.
I don’t think he was talking about rock/paper/scissors class balance, but instead class mechanics that lack counterplay. These include:
- Invulnerabilities
- Instant burst that has no tell
- Instant teleports that ignore LOS, esp on a low cooldown
- Instant CC
- Auto-procs, especially those that damage and CC, although there are too many defensives on a short CD as well
- Abilities that do tons of damage while also evadingAll of these mechanics are terrible for the game, and are cheesy to fight against. As the game has power-crept like crazy, every class has at least SOME of these “unfair” mechanics in order to be viable. The worst part is, that a lot of these mechanics make fights even less tactical. Oh well, it still kinda fun in spurts.
the less counterplay your build’s moves have the optimal it is in gw2.
could we get rid of some game mechanics bypassing broken designs please? At this point i can’t name a class which isn’t full of these, so you can choose where to start. Every step in this matter would decrese the rotting of the pvp community.

Compare to Sigil of Strength: 1 sec, 60% as to 2 sec, 50% and a stack of might buffs your dmg for more than 1%.

Not saying not to buff it but, vuln on a target increases damage from all incoming sources. Buffing your own might only increases your own outgoing damage.

- your reactions seem a bit slow and your gameplay feels slow overall. you need to improve that a lot for thief play. Feels like you play with a controller or something
- if you decide to decap use resources to reach the node faster. Like at ~2:15 you had withdraw, shadowstep, signet, bunch of init. getting there faster means you can gank sooner.
- dont guard points. There are really limited situations where you want to 1v1 for a short duration. example: after you decided to fullcap home at ~2:50 you should leave and help somewhere else.
- better to put the enemy behind than teamfight! Example: after the cap i mentioned above you should have immidiately gone far couse gua loses to engi on paper and it’s a nice opportunity to cause 4v5 and start the snowball.
- You stand around doing nothing too much. Dont be afraied to folow and autohit your target nor be afraied to use your cooldowns. You used every utility only 2 times in the whole match.

Less and Less people are playing PvP at this point. 80% of people who i regularly talk’d to are planning to quit or already did so.
Pop problems where noticable since ever. You knew 20% of the players by name on your level and qued into them over and over.
Why are you at a lowpoint right now?
- the gameplay changed dramatically in a bad way. I know noone who wouldn’t prefer before juni or even preHoT game experience. This is the numerouno reason why people leave, the pvp lacks fun.
what keeps people still in?
- pvp’ers —> reach legend && quit season
- others -> get backpack achivement && quit season
and belive me achieving these isn’t even that fun it could be due to #1above. Nor are these some long term goals or something.
People got no goals to reach. Getting legend got zero prestige nor getting the wings.
Competitive minded people got ZERO reason to play this game. Even the Team-Leaderboard is 100% pugfarm casual kitten. Pro league is poorly organized, teams got zero motivation to play after losing 1-2 matchups. ~50% of pro league players officially admitted that they would leave the game in case of no monney.
This leads to low population, which leads to the ones who still like to play this mess have 10minutes que in ruby, which leads to less players-> repeate.
I’d be surprised if more than 1k people where playing at the same time.
At this point you spend more time waiting for a match to start than you actually play. That’s kitten up. You can have the best MM-system in the universe, even that wont solve low-population q time.
The changes ANet is going to do matters little now. Who is going to buy gemstore outfits if people are about to quit? You dont pay for something that you posibly wont see after 2more weeks. Less poeple->smaller community->less fun->more quit->repeate.

There are some outdated informations on the official homepage that should be changed(imo). The game changed a lot but the writeing that potential new players read first are still 3years old.

let me clarify something… You may not realise that your main problem is not that this build is evading a lot, the problem is that it is dealing high damage with it. And yes something like that is broken by design. Stuff should not apply pressure with being defensive. We got more of this bullcrp with HoT, like engi hammer block etc…
I had a match just before posting this in which we had a power Thief and a Mace/Shield Warrior try to deal with one and could not get a CC ability to hit this evade Thief

There is no break in their evade frames so no room to attack at all, let alone stun them.

it is incredibly weak against CC especially Immob, kiting and LoS. If your team got a power thief the enemy’s condi-d/d player should be rendered to uselessness.

if you push then several things can happen. If enemy defends you lose faar and mid, if enemy pushes too and neither side decides to defend you lose home and mid. If pushing teams collide at beach you lose faar and mid.
I’m pretty amazed with the marketing-for-living guy who said PL is cheap marketing. You are assuming that info about PL reaches potential clients – it doesn’t. It only reaches a handful of dedicated players who like to torture themselves with the weekly streams of well-known quality (or lack thereof). GW2 PvP is complete niche and the money isn’t marketing because it does not create any additional demand.

It’s not that the skill floor or ceiling have been seriously changed, what’s happened in this last year is that we’ve just gotten more of everything, so it takes longer to bait out cooldowns and combat has been slowed down quite a bit.
By no means would i call this slower. As you indicated we got more from everything, that means more ‘everything’ is casted in the time period.
Having to count on more CDs is harder indeed, but is not necessarily changing the skill level to be Higher. We actually have “more everything” to a level where you can get away with multiple stupid mistakes without punisment, couse if you wasted something then you can just smash another button and it’s ‘K’, then maybe use a kite-puzle as before. Like…. ESL is full with holder-Brusier comps where engis dodgeroll mid elixir-s cast reflect when war switched to mace and all that stupid stuff w/o even thinking about the outcome. I mean… You are in one of the most successful teams ever, you should know how it the game works now.
Think about it… Other games got theyr cheezy forgiving heros/champions/builds and they are good to roll ppl with in pugs, but they see little play in pro scene couse other specs that require more skill and tactics are overperforming in in a good player’s hand. This is not the case in GW. The “ESL-meta” is to play the most forgiving cheese kitten couse that’s the most effective and has the least counterplay. And the same is carryed to the casual/pug scene aswell.

play wvw (you can go with blob. use shortbow 4 to tag ppl) → earn tokens → buy gear from tokens and minimal gold @ wvw armorsmith/weaposmith → unlock daredevil from wvw hero point coins.
there are 2k tutorials and builds all around the internet. watch some vids decide what playstyle you want then try to have fun.
but people aren’t using it because of the reflects, I assume (similar reason so DH not being used as much). Otherwise – yes – you’d see 1200 ranged revenants.
I’d clarify things here. Hammer is unused couse it loses to thief and staff version of reve under focus.
Projectal hate is not that big of a deal considering only your autohit is a projectile and #2got 4sec CD with that amont of damage.

To be honest i think both skills are still are fine pulmonary impact might still be slightly under power. only reason it seem so powerful in this meta is because anet removed all the bunker amulet which is why it feel so powerful.
Pulmonary impact counter is to people who have protection. thief will not win a fight if they keep time on that.
basilisk venom just forces you to slightly stagger your blocks nothing overpowered.
both moves are single target they should be powerful.
yeah fighting a nerco out shroud he get face rolled hard to intrup moves but once he in shroud nerco face roll thief both sides of the fight are fair just knowing how to fight what you are up against.
Describing the problem from d/p thief perspective: Why did impact and HoT overall dumb down thief gameplay?
To describe why Impact is broken by design:
Before HoT, you had to meenage Initiative in many aspects. You had to consider when you use initiative for what purposes. You did use it for offense, defense and utility example: hearthseeker, shadowshot(blind is util too if u use it wisely) for offense, 5->2 to defense, 5->cluster and headshot for utility etc…
If you consumed too much for certain purposes in this balance you had less for the others. If you spared initiative to interrupt necro heal or warrior banner which you should, then you casted less stealth or shadowshot etc. Counting on opponents skills defined how you meenage your bar.
Impacting in itself is changing thief gameplay. It’s damage matches frontstab or shadowshot critical hit damage and is unevadable, unblockable, unblindable and unclensable. It is a decent damage boost on your steal if landed properely and gives direct damage to utilitys with CC, which are OK to a certain degree (still think that it’s stupid with venom). To come to the point lets look at how it effects the init meenagement.
Headshot was before HoT a powerful tool to control your opponents if applyed correctly, but you had to consider what you want to interrupt to have enough initiative to apply enough damage pressure. I hope you see that this trait removes this aspect from the game entirely couse the damage of an interrupt is higher than the average noncrit-crit damage on all your weapon abilitys. This opens space to the question: why wouldn’t i just interrupt every skill i can and deal more damage than usually. Yes you should! You should even interrupt autohits for damage couse it’s matematically higher than any other combinations (not considering inback-stab or precast+steal burst). Not to meantion that interrupting the enemy can already f@@@ theyr plans over.
HoT offers even more dumb stuff. Now that i explayned how not using Headshot for damage is not optimal they introduce a massive Autohit damage buff. This leaves you with Good amount of pressure even if you spammed all your init. Fair enough you’d say… well not that intelligent that this damage buff was so high that meta moved to rage sigil autohitting… This leaves you with the following: biggest damage is impactHeadshot and if you can’t do that you get away with simply autohitting.
(WARNING!!! BEFORE SOME OVERANXIOUS CYNZ WANTS TO COMMENT: i do not say with this that you should not shadowshot, 5->2 or hearthseeker according to a situation! they are awesome and got theyr place!)
There are 2 more HoT(daredev) additions that changed thief roles but according to the devs this was by design and this is not necessarely bad but i want to mention it here couse it is a part of powercreeping the d/p.
This is the evasiveness that comes with Daredevil.
First, the not that bad things are the dodges that are comming with DD where the motto of sword-acro builds before the expansion. You needed both of these to succeed with an evasive-themed build. I welcome D/P in this family couse i support evasion based gameplay over stealth camping \o/. You have to admit though that this traitline offers TOO much dodges. just too much. There is little difference in your evasiveness depending on your main weapon.
The worse part are the “ELITE” dodges. 2 of them are staight up broken on d/p
- Dash offers perma swiftness. well yep this is already really good. your mobility is brutal with this trait, well worthy of a grandmaster. The thing is i’d stop this trait right here. but it removes snares with no icd. Worst part is that it removes immob. There is no need for evading abilitys with immob. you dont need to know what applyes immob. you just dodge like you normally would and get away. This renders an incredibly amount of skill from the game. Immob wasn’t thorwn around in the golden days of befor-juny and landing immobs was a way to stop thieves momentum. Getting immob isnt “death”, thief had many cards to play, headshot or blind the incomming burst, switchin to sb->#3 or #5 or both, clensing it with signet, etc. Now you don’t even have to think
- Bound. At the pace you can spam evades with DD the damage buff is on you most of the time. 10% damage is the average of what executioner offers, which is a GM trait. If you land 1 damage proc from it to lets say only 1 target every 10sec(natural regen time of a dodge but in reality you can dodge every ~4 sec in permanent successions) for ~3k dmg. In that period of time you deal ~20k damage to that person. Assuming this, the end resoult is that Bound gave you ridiculous sum of ~25% damage boost. I’d stop here in development but Bound makes applying initial #5&leap stealth uninterruptable. Yep that’s bad design couse it leaves no counterplay. So hmm it’s prty kitten strong too.
I don’t want to go further. I hope you get my point. Revievs like this could be done for the majotity of professions, highlighting the flaws in Elite Spec development. I’d leave the rest for other people or for another day…

BS It’s not guarantied to interrupt everytimeEvade, invuln and blind will still cause Basilisk Venom and the proc to fail correct? So what. I don’t run that trait, maybe i should start. yep. I’d suggest taking that trait over Escapist on all thief builds. Excluding maybe condi builds and some staff builds. The amount of interrupts Steal, Bandit’s, Venom gives is already enough to overperform the other traits in effectivity.
Add sword/staff stealth attack or headshot on ./p builds to that.
That trait alone gives ~40% damage increse against most under-focus targets.
The clear on evade trait would have relevance in 1v1 sutuation if it would not be terible in this meta. Condi specs apply multiple condis with single abilitys like necro proccing chill→bleed+sigils+base condi from skill, warriors apply ~5condis with mace covering those on LB etc… you can’t really clense those with this trait. If you face a decent opponent it’s even more useless couse he unloads u with condi then just starts kiteing and playing defensive so not allowing you to evade == 0clenses.

Condi thief builds are less of a problem. Venom condis can be evaded and clensed. They have counterplay, not like Impact.

Venom(now) is suited for powercreep as you mentioned. And as i admit that it is fine vs the majority of classes but in thief v thief scenatios it’s just completely stupid and removes a lot of fun/skillcap. Meh.. mby it’s just impacting….
Sad storyJust interrupt the cast :o If you play 80% D/P then you have headshot available at least 50% of the time.
…. if they cast it normally it has counterplay to a certain degree, couse you can random evade the instants after…
Problem starts at the point where decent people realise that you can stealth cast it.
