Staff is actually great, fun and challenging in PvP. Great support in direct damage, condition, cc, and heal. I wish more people knew how to synergise with a staff ele and position themselves accordingly to take better advantage of the fields/wards, but it’s fun to watch out your allies movements and supporting them while controlling the battlefield. And that spices things up when you’re targetted by thieves at close range and rangers from the other side of the map.

Why dodge staff skills when you can just calmy walk around or move aside?
As a PvP staff player, i have to predict the opponent’s movements, luring them with some aoes to get them where i want them to be. Though most of the case they’re just on me. Killed more people with lava tomb than my staff skills.

I haven’t played ranked arena for a while, is it in such a bad state? Came back on the game for a couple of weeks now, but i’ve been mostly training in unranked, where it’s quite balanced imo. I want to do ranked games again but i confess i’m a little scared people might be unforgiving with rage, cries and tears.

I always found the hardest/annoying part against thieves (and somewhat mesmers) is the constant auto-detargetting.

Hmmm i play an arcana yolo staff build with cele amulet, may not be meta, but i have lots of fun
Zerker jihad build is fine but in my opinion you can’t use all of staff potential.

I don’t know if it’s better, i just know i play better, but anyway, it’s forever fun to play. I just wish we could have equal base stats. Less HP and less armor is ok as long as you have more of something else to compensate. For great justice. But I guess it’s balanced this way because we have more skills and are smarter with an inimitable aura of grandeur.

I find gust most usefull when targetting behind you or at close range (with or without target), because ennemies don’t expect it most often, or if they do, can rarely react in time. What annoys me with staff aa are the projectile speed but i guess it’s balanced this way since fireball is aoe, water is aoe heal, and air is multitarget. I wish earth aa was a bit faster though, but it’s also a combo finisher so maybe it’s fine this way.
Overall i think staff is a good weapon, surely the most balanced one between dps/support/control in a teamplay. That’s why i use it in pvp.

Hmmm i wouldn’t say no to becoming an Aspectalist… the skills would become those in the aspect arena… f1/f2/f3/f4 would become Sun/Wind/Lightning/Whatever.

I’ve made several traceroutes, seems like there’s many packet losses and timed out requests past hop 5 or so, before reaching Anet’s servers … i believe there’s something wrong with the routing, maybe i should check with my ISP, that’s gonna be a pain.

Happened to me since this morning too. Like every 2-5 minutes, back to character selection screen. I guess i wont pvp today. Oh and i had a time gap at the start of the match, everything was fine until the gate opened and i was left alone, everyone else was already on mid :/

Well it’s not useless in 1v1 neither
But you have to predict ennemy’s moves and plan your attacks/counters beforehand, because you know, aftercasts, animations and so on…

Are there really people thinking staff is useless? Out of all the weapon sets it’s the most versatile one, great for area dps/control/support. The only thing is you can’t rely too much on your AAs because they’re kinda slow, and chances are high that you’ll be targetted.

3. Elementalist = Thaumaturge
Just throwing this in here, but Thaumaturge doesn’t actually fit here at all. A Thaumaturge is someone who has control over both spiritual (holy) magic and arcane (dark/worldly) magic.
Elementalists have a flavor of arcane, but they really don’t represent the holy magic in any way, and that’s a pretty important part of a thaumaturge, that crossing of the lines between two disciplines.
EDIT: And, even in real world terminology, it appears that the Thaumaturge still has that intrinsic link to the divine:
Originaly, in GW1, each school of magic refered to a human god: Fire/Balthazar, Water/Grenth, Earth/Melandru, Air/Dwayna, Energy storage/Lyssa.
While each class favored one god, elementalists did in fact worshiped all of them.

As for myself, depending on situations I happen to roam quite a lot with my staff, although i’m much more useful in midfights. Roaming thieves are the only threat out there but i can at least slow them down and delay their actions if they manage to kill me.
I gave a try to bunker staff, but it takes so long to kill anyone i found that boring. I’m more comfortable with 6 in fire and air.

Base stats should have the same amount. If it’s ok for warrior to have more base hp/toughness, an elementalist maybe should have more base healing/power or condi/boon duration for example. Just make all the classes have the same global amount of base stats and we can talk about amu balance.

Why not have 6man team? The 6th would be the replacement to kick in if someone DC or is having a heart attack. And that would add a little more depth to the comp strategy.

Hmmm… GW1 MS had a much smaller aoe + crazy cast time + 60s cd + overcast
It ’d be fine by me if we could chose to decrease MS radius, thus getting a denser aoe, making area denial more proficient. The way it is now is too diluted, except for big bosses.

Hardly waited more than 2 minutes in soloQ. Perhaps very late at night, i guess most people must be sleeping in EU, and so do I. But i think we may have a geographical and demographical advantage on that point.

I used to play Staff 00266, great survivability and control, but it took forever to kill anyone in a 1v1 fight.
Switched to 66002 now, it’s more enjoyable but less forgiving.

Staff AAs are kitten slow indeed. So slow that you can’t even take advantage of the 2s fury from arcana 1. Above 800 range you dont even need to actively dodge them. Fire and air are still useful against turrets though. Chain lightning ricochets are harder to avoid when you target something else. Otherwise, i think staff is globally fine, just make the projectiles faster would be enough. Almost 2s travel time (roughly estimated) for 1200 range compared to mesmer GS auto attack, it’s pretty meh. Well, maybe staff necro and mesmer are worse, and should be revamped too.
As it’s easier to position yourself better at long range to avoid attacks (using terrain, obstructions…) halving travel time would be nice, that would make staff aa somewhat useful at close range too, when staff users are the most vulnerable.

Technically, deep freeze isn’t a stun, it’s a freeze. You can dodge/reflect it or blink out of it.
I have been deep freezed a while ago as i wasn’t paying attention. Luckily i was on staff and could reflect the second projectile to its source before i blinked away. Well i guess he didn’t see it coming either. I would have paid to see his face.

PS II: You know warriors are going to immune to soft cc next patch right? no more chill to mess with your recharges.
Is this true? I couldn’t find anything about that. That seems a little bit unfair to my “chill out guyz” build.

Just make FGS replace fire skills leaving other attunement skills available would be enough of a buff imo.
Also, i’m dreaming, but it would be nice to get other Elite weapons… Frosty Trident for water, Diamond Shield for Earth, Sky Sword for Air… I can imagine nice skins and skills in my mind…
