Knockbacks against wall

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Olvendred.3027

Oh my, what an oversight. Knockbacks from skills like Illusionary Wave and Point Blank shot clearly cause target speeds greater than gravity in the game, so how is it when you knock something against a wall it doesn’t take 100,000 damage? My immersion is broken T.T

Remember, you can fall a reasonable distance without taking any damage at all. Do any knockback or launch skills actually knockback as far a distance as is needed to proc falling damage? Maybe Banish, is all.

If you knock them back a small distance against a wall, that’s certainly not far enough.

The Quaggan tonics also had the possibility to be used in WvW to hide.

The point is, they can’t think of every way someone can use these items in WvW to get an advantage so they blocked them.

But they didn’t block Quaggan Tonics (or cat tonics, or jackalopes, etc).

Re: “What happens to the alliance guild hall…”

The answer is simple: Alliances as an entity do not get guild halls but rather an instanced place to call home which does not receive upgrades (perhaps aside from cosmetic revisions) and thus nothing is lost if the alliance dissolves for whatever reason.

This doesn’t allow small guilds to work with others in regard to progression of the guild hall though.

Chris

Have Alliance Halls and Guild Halls. These would function almost exactly the same, except that Alliance Halls would (obviously) be shared between the guilds of an Alliance, whereas a Guild Hall is only for one particular guild. Because Alliance Halls are shared, whatever currency is used (for the sake discussion, let’s say that it’s just influence) would have to be pooled between the Alliance guilds before the upgrade. One way to do this would be an Alliance Coffer. Instead of simply sending your guild’s influence directly to the upgrade, your guild panel would have an option to “Donate Influence to Alliance Coffer.” The influence in the Coffer, once there’s enough of it, would be used by the leaders to upgrade the Alliance Hall.

The Alliance Coffer would only be used for Hall upgrades; all other upgrades would be handled by the individual guilds as usual.

So, what about when a guild leaves? Whenever a guild donated influence to the Alliance Coffer, the amount of influence would be recorded and added to the total amount of influence that guild has donated. Let’s say Guild X has, over the year they spent in Alliance A, donated 300,000 influence to the Coffer. Now Guild X wants to leave (or is voted out). Guild X gets 300,000 Alliance points to take with them. If Guild X joins a new Alliance, then those 300,000 points are automatically donated to the new Alliance Coffer.

What about the Alliance Hall of Alliance A? Alliance A would keep all upgrades they had previously made in their Hall, but the Alliance would accrue a deficit of the amount donated by the guild that left. In this case, 300,000 influence. Alliance A would have to pay off that deficit prior to commencing new upgrades.

I would also suggest that, if a guild leaves an alliance but does not want to join a new one, it would be possible for them to convert their Alliance points (ie. the influence they donated to the Alliance) into upgrades for their own Guild Hall… but only into Hall upgrades, and not back again. That is, if you spend the 300,000 Alliance points on upgrades for your own Guild Hall, but then want to join an Alliance again, you would have to start donating to it from scratch.

break the 24 hour periods into 3 rounds
win two rounds, you win the day
win 4 days you win the match

this way, one 8 hour shift cant win you the day. 2 however can, but i think if you lose two timeslots, then ehhhhh you lost that day.

soo now there would need to be a reason to play when you are getting blown out.
hmmm

Honestly, this doesn’t solve any of the ‘problems’ mentioned in the OP.

24 hours coverage: NA prime time would only account of 1 of the 3 8-hour slots. So no matter how you do in NA, it can still be overridden by whoever wins the other 2 slots.

Snowballing: the match can literally be absolutely decided after 4 days. Even if the PPT scores would actually be close enough to allow a comeback. And a single day can be decided after 2 8-hour slots: if it is, there’s no point in playing in the 3rd slot at all.

Stagnation: basically, the same things as said in snowballing.

My own opinions:

Snowballing/stagnation: Neither of these things are symptoms of the PPT scoring system. Both are simply because the matches last a whole week. Let’s imagine this is a basketball game (which lasts 40 mins, in 4 quarters). Team A manages to take a 70 point lead in the first half. Whereas it is technically possible for Team B to come back in the second half, it’s extremely unlikely, since Team A is probably much better than them, to have been so dominant in the first half. To have a fighting chance in the second half, Team B needed to give themselves that chance in the first half. The same applies to WvW – you have one whole week to get your server points and put yourselves in the lead; if you fail to do so early on, then yes, you will have very little chance to actually win later. Note that, due to reset and the weekend, there is generally far greater player participation in the first half of the week anyway, so it would be a bad idea to make the second half of the week somehow more decisive.

The week-long match also influences stagnation: Team B in our basketball game only had to keep trying to win for a further 20 mins, which, although it might have been almost impossible, was well within the bounds of human mental fortitude. A losing server has to continue playing for an entire week, which, quite frankly, gets boring. And a basketball game only happens every so often… WvW happens all week, every week without fail. Even if you shorten the matches, WvW would still be going on every day.

24 hour scoring: here, I have a solution. Designate the bottom few Tiers of servers as “NA-Prime” (or EU-Prime), while the top few Riers would be “International.” Offer some free transfers, and make it so points in “off-hours” count for less in the Prime servers. That way, players from OCX/SEA/etc would have a place where their contributions could count. Which would simply assist the situation at the moment, where “off hours” players are concentrated in the top few servers anyway.

That’s the difference though for aquatic, you go out of your way to a zone where very few people do it.

Nope. There’s underwater areas everywhere, and I rarely even come across another person doing it. Certainly I’ve never had to compete.

Reviver… depends where you go. If you’re with the crowd who only knows about Thaumanova, then sure. But there are plenty of other places where dead NPCs are reliably found (not to mention world events with dead players), that tend to be a lot better and involve little competition. I agree that you do usually have to go out of your way to do daily reviver, but then, the same applies to quite a lot of dailies (Dungeon, Fractal, [Regional] Slayer or Events, Activity, etc).

The suggestion is a generic lost-companion-animal statue, in an out of the way place (at least my contribution is to make it out of the way).

I would recommend against an inscription that subscribes to any particular faith, however. The statue itself would be enough, if it comprised a small grouping of animals using GW2 existing models such as drakehounds, cats, and birds (ravens?). Those who need it would know what it signifies and it would be more timeless without a particular plaque.

A place that springs to mind is in Fields of Ruin, at the Cymbel’s Rescue POI. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cymbel%27s_Rescue

It’s this peaceful little grove where Cymbel has created a sanctuary for various animals, to protect them from Ogres and so forth. There are a couple of DE’s where some of her Hounds get stolen by Ogres and you help to get them back. You could add a small memorial to a particular hound (or hounds) that had died, perhaps with a referential name. And then add some dialogue to Cymbel about the memorial, and about how sad it is to lose a pet, and suchlike.

I think this would fit in with the lore, be easy to implement, and be sufficiently meaningful and appropriate while remaining low-key and out of the way.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing this being added. It would make the home instance be more interesting.
But would it be all of your minis, or just some that you have to pick? That would be around 400 at least if you have all of them, correct?
Would they wander around the instance as a whole or be confined to a penned in section (like an actual farm)? I would want the latter, so I knew where to go look for them.

It would have to be a limited number, probably. I imagine you could set up a system where you designate, say, 20 as favourites, and they would be the ones that appear.

in Account & Technical Support

Getting an account is a two-stage process. First, you buy a copy of the game, give an email address, and they’ll send you an email saying something like ‘Thank you for buying the game, here is a serial code. Now go register.’ Then you do the second step, which is registering – which requires an email address. But this email address need not be the same as the email address on which you bought the account.

This way, it is possible to buy an account for a friend, for instance. But yes, it’s entirely possible that you bought the game on one email, but registered it on another.

What Silmar said is true, but another way is simply to make a new character. If they get an in-game mail containing a 2-Week Golem Banker item, you’ve got a Deluxe edition.

30 mins of killing - profession specific loot

Heres how the scientfic method works, you come up with a hypothesis, you test it, then you analyze your data.
Thats what he did
If you oppose his findings, the burden of proof is now on you as a scientist to disprove his data.

Using the Scientific Method while you can not even use spell check on your own post.

First, the OP needs a control character. This control character needs to be on an account with 0% Magic Find and the character needs to be wearing armor, trinkets, and weapons that DO NOT increase Magic Find. He CAN NOT use ANY Magic Find buffs except for what is given to PvE from the WvW standings.

He did not use a Control and therefore is findings are a moot point. We don’t even know his total Magic Find on his account combined with the buff to PvE from WvW combined with any trinkets he had that might have increased his Magic Find combined with the Magic Find buffs from food and/or utility potions.

We don’t even know if he didn’t clean out his bags to match what the loot would look like for both the Engineer or the Warrior just to get everyone here riled up over it.

I could do it for you all and have my bags look skewed and none of you would know the difference. And I wouldn’t even have to use photoshop. Just clean the bags, make them look the way I want them to look to get a rise out of everyone, then log out to clear the on screen chat and log back in and sit for about 5-10 min to get a chat log.

I myself see some difference and I can now restock all my materials without paying the bloated prices on the Trade Post. I’m sorry you all are losing your cash cow. Adapt or rage quit already.

spelling and the scientific method have nothing to do with each other.
magic find effects drop rarity, not drop type.
" Magic Find is both an account bonus and a character attribute that increases the chance to receive higher-quality loot from slain foes"

has little to do with cash cows.

Obvious troll is obvious…

Magic Find gear? Yeah almost a year ago. Why would you even take this guy serious? Calling other people out while he, obviously, has no grasp of the current state of the game. Elite guild leader of the iron trolls!

There are Magic Find Infusions that can be put on Ascended Gear.

Suddenly there is Magic Find Gear.

You might want to do more research before you try calling someone out yourself.

The main point is that MF does not affect the type of drops you get, only the quality/rarity. Someone with high MF should get more rares and exotics than someone with low MF; but it makes no difference in whether they get heavy, medium or light armour, or any particular type of weapon.

Magic find is utterly irrelevant to what this thread is about.

30 mins of killing - profession specific loot

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

30 minutes is nothing, not a statistical sample. Only ones crying about this change are the farmers and market flippers, none of which evoke any kind of sympathy from me. Normal casual player doesn’t notice any change, or notices positive change in drops that he can actually use.

Actually, the “normal casual player” is affected most, because they’re least likely to change to a more profitable class, and more likely to have a playstyle where gear drops make up a large percentage of their loot. They’re also the ones who find it difficult to make enough gold to get nice things.

But unless they play the right class, they’re being penalised. Think of it as an automatic “-50 Magic Find” for playing on the wrong class (number is arbitrary).

The fact that they don’t notice it doesn’t mean they aren’t suffering. Not that anyone notices it unless they actually bother to catalogue their loot. Most people only notice the quality of loot (whether they get rares or exotics).

It won’t affect the economy all that much. What it does affect is how much loot (or more specifically, the value of the loot) that you individually are getting, depending purely on your class.

Yeah that tutorial mission stays as your current story mission. At least I’m pretty sure it does. Been a long time since I did it so I may be remembering it wrong. I did it with one my Asuran’s and basically you just have to go back in to the mission and do it.

I just checked with a new toon, and I wasn’t able to leave the tutorial. If you try to leave the area, it just teleports you back in. So I think that’s been fixed.

Talk to me again when you have 9.5M karma and nothing to do with it (except make linen, which is boring as kitten).

The reason they’re afraid to introduce good karma sinks into the game is that the failed to do so early on, so lots of players now have huge amounts of karma stocked up, and would now be able to just instantly buy whatever they wanted from the karma sink if the costs were too low… whereas if the costs were massive, then it would be an impossible hurdle for newer players to overcome.

Solution to fix the population imbalance

in WvW

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

1. Doing nothing is how we got here. If 900 posts in a few days suggests something is broken, that might be it.

Doing nothing doesn’t solve anything, but nor does it break anything. Remember, all the people who are passionate about WvW now, are people who got into it using the existing system. This is the system they grew to like. That’s why nobody’s suggested a solution that heaps of other people immediately disagree with: because everyone has their own vested interests in the type of WvW they currently play. It’s a lot harder to implement change now, than at the start.

This problem has 2 aspects: 1) to even up population imbalance in match-ups, and 2) to get more people playing WvW/stop people leaving WvW. The first one is actually the easier. The problem with 2) is that any change is probably going to anger quite a lot of players, and not necessarily provide enough of a hook to get new people wanting to play WvW long-term. Meaning overall WvW populations drop even faster.

So, yes. Absolutely yes. Until someone comes up with a solution that can please all types of WvW players, and doesn’t destroy things which people think are essential to their WvW experience, and is viable as a long-term solution to complaints, doing nothing is the best option. If anything, “doing something” is what got us here: when Anet introduced seasons (as a response to player complaints), all sorts of things got messed up.

I think it’s very important that if you log out of a character while in a Guild Hall, you should log back in directly into the Guild Hall, without having to go through an extra loading screen.

This is not to say that Guild Halls should be on the open world map. They can be instances in the technical sense, simply that they should not automatically reroute to your previous location whenever you log out.

events on timers - good or bad?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Olvendred.3027

Olvendred.3027

Of course, that’s why it’s a bloody awful idea to tie a random event to things players rely on, like karma vendor access.

But true varied random world Bosses throughout the zones would not be keyed to such things.

But it depends on how you have fun. One of the more fun things for me in GW2 is open world bosses. If they were not scheduled and were completely random, then trying to find one that was active would be nearly impossible. You might encounter one every few days, rather than several per day like I do now. The rest of the time you’d spend wasting time in random zones hoping a boss might pop, and when it does, it would likely be way underpopulated because nobody would know about it that wasn’t also randomly in that zone. No, it’s terrible.

There were websites that accessed the API and showed which world bosses, and temples, and actually all events, were up at any time, on any server. It was actually easier to get to the events you wanted prior to the megaserver, because chances were it would be up on at least one server (within a reasonable amount of time, anyway).

The mentality he has offers the ability to actually move on/overcome hardships or at least try to, and learn from them. A large amount of the opposing viewpoints seem like misplaced and overly-sympathetic rubbish.

OP messed up and instead of accepting it for what it was, decided to post on the forums and “1-up” himself over everybody by mocking the rest of the community with crude generalisations.

Anyone who tries something out in game, and, simply for being new, gets verbally attacked for it, is a valid concern. Yes, the OP shouldn’t have gone with the extra, generalised attack back on the forums; I agree he is in the wrong there. But he is completely justified in making a thread about encountering that sort of toxicity. When stuff like that happens, it discourages new players from trying certain sorts of content (or even the GW2 at all), and thereby diminishes the game for everyone.

This isn’t about “overcoming hardships.” It’s a game, people are supposed to play it for enjoyment, not to mentally toughen themselves up.
