Seems valid. In my guild of 500 (between 40-60 active at any time), I’m the only engineer main in the whole guild :/ We have about one more main but he is still lvling up in his 40s. There is a lack of engineers but that may not necessary be a bad thing, we get to be special
Must keep making fun of self…
“BY OGDEN’S HAMMER, WHAT NERFS!”
“Is it just me, or am I amazingly nerfed”
“Nerf…good”
“You must nerf more often”
Gains retaliation “Go ahead, nerf me!”
“Nerf what cannot be nerfed”
- All from gw2
Also I agree that the rifle is a decent weapon, I would just like to see its potential maximized.
Its been bugging me a while that all the traits for rifle are under firearms. I understand that firearms as a name would include rifles but the stat bonuses do not really apply for rifle. Critical is fine but extra condition damage is not well spend, I mean what are you going to be using it for? Just blunderbuss? Stat wise, the rifle might have been better suited on explosives, with condition duration being better suited for it on its immobilize and vulnerability skills. Although I don’t expect such a drastic change, even a simple small bleed on another rifle skill would help in reducing wasted potential.
Simply put, rifle is power damage, pistol is condition damage, so what is rifle doing on a condition damage benefiting trait line?
I know someone would reply “but you can bleed on critical hits with sharpshooter!” Well you can do that with any weapon, that is part of the firearms branch, not the rifle itself.

You ran from skritt!
That is the only taunt I have ever fallen for. I had to go back and finish the job, I just couldn’t live my life knowing I had ran from a skritt. I just couldn’t.
That charr is wearing the karma temple armor, which IS available, also, rather than having more sets I’d like to have commando AND stalwart sets available for pve, AND an explanation as to why LIGHT class humans got access to engineer character creation goggles (yep that’s right, I also freaked out at the moment I realized that), being quite the reason I say allowing armor-crossing would be fine.
.
I was talking about the the turrets behind the charr, not the charr himself. If we had bad kitten turrets like those it would help in establishing an engineers identity better imo. As for the character creation goggles you can easily transmute them to another class of same armor. You probably saw a human ranger with them transmuted, like the one I have
I would also accept making the turrets look like the one behind the charr pictured here. Also that flamethrower shown would looks better than the curent one we have.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/engineer/
Why you no give us better aesthetics devs? >:(
Edit: also looked at the rifle turret video and LOL Engie kills an enemy with one rifle shot then proceeds to put down a rifle turret that helps her wipe an entire enemy mob! If only that were true.
(edited by Penguin.5197)
My advice is to go ahead and play engineer if you are interested in its playstyle. Like that flamethrower? Go ahead and have fun with it. If you learn the class in and out you will be fine in pvp environments and be able to get your share of kills. Or be able to play effectively in pve. However if you are looking for power, engineer is not the way to go and you will be left dissapointed.
(edited by Penguin.5197)
Keep in mind that while you increase condition duration in 1/4s increments you only get damage ticks in 1s increments. Bleeding is 2s, poison 2, blind 3, burning 3 or 1. So you’d need to get to +33% condition duration to see an extra tick of blind or long burn and you’d need to get to +50% condition duration to see an extra tick of bleeding or poison. This is why Runes of Melandru and other -condition duration are so popular. If you have no +condition duration then your condition applied automatically lose at least one tick which on a 2s condition means 50% damage reduction
I have never made condition build before, still working on mine and dont know about it much. But are you saying the first second does no damage at all?
For elementalist I recommend keepig close to them as possible. That way whenever they pop magnetic aura to buy some time you can melee them instead of just watching the regain cd on skills and health. Any class that can reflect projectiles has a huge advantage against engies so its important to have at least a weapon that can bypass that defense. Im not sure if the flamethrower counts as melee or range so it might help too.
As engies we dont have a good hard counter against mesmers but running around like a maniac with flamethrower has had decent results for me, as I can still do damage to mesmers while depriving them of illusions to use.
I think its the first ever thread when someone was seriously asking a nerf on engineers so congrats on being the first the first komu! :O
Anyways any conditions that the engineer still had before that trait kicked in still work though, you just cant get stacked any new ones.
“Paulie want a nerf!” – Random parrot
But in all seriousness theres no way we can get another nerf. Im actually expecting a buff with no strings attached for jan update. Hopefully.
I think being afk in general is against user agreement but I wouldnt see a problem with putting down some turrets and going to fight somewhere else.
But anyways now that the cat is out of the bag and afk turret leveling is becoming more well known now, I wouldn’t be surprised if the devs nerfed the turrets in some way or another to stop it.
I cant check atm but trench coat and spike shoulderpads? Sure sounds like karma armor.
There have been many threads about this on our forums before, but yeah thats the way it seems to go. I have tried looking at it through developers eye and the best reason I can come up with is that its probably because we get heavier armor. Though I made a thread some time ago were I pointed out other ways we get taxed for versatility. But yeah it is hard to understand arenanets motives when making engineer changes.
Edit: Here is what I wrote on why that philosophy on engineers should be changed if you happen to be interested in reading it: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/To-developers-What-we-pay-for-versatility/first

Theres always that one class that a person becomes wary of after doing enough fractals. You just happened to find someone that dislikes thieves.
Personally, for fractals ive become wary of signet warriors. Always getting down and not contributing to party. As im sure theres someone who probably refuses to party my class, engineers. But i love to pt with thieves. Their stealth is a huge help when someone goes down.
I was wondering why us fa at eb were doing so well. Turns out the cd zerg was hanging down in the jp for some reason O.o Shouldve taken a screenshot but it was pretty funny
ayde I think that exploit was fixed when they made elixir have only one cast time. (Before you could take out a kit between both cast times to keep kit and elixir buffs)
Well the effects of elixir arent too bad but when you fight another player, and sometimes in pve, you want an elite that you can rely upon. The risk factor is usually too big and as such supply crates outshines elixir x.
I rarely use grenades but took them out today in fractals to kill the jellyfish and his zerg of minions. I hovered my mouse on skill 1 to see how much damage it does and well…it was a pathetic 160ish damage per grenade. To put it in perspective my exotic harpoongun was doing 450 on auto attack. just to do the same kind of damage I would have to trait into grenades..which seems pretty sad. And even though I get the argument that grenades are meant to be used on multi targets, the harpoon gun does it good, if not better, with its mines and timed explosives and what not.
Point is they need a buff now.
I had a few spare flame legion tokens lying around and was deciding on trying a different build too and thought of the same thing. I actually went ahead and spend them to try a new build, simply because nerfs and buffs will always come. Plus even though they said january and february updates would be huge, no one ever said it would be huge for engineers.
@Penguin. – I don’t have much experience with engineer, but just looking at wiki, I think some specialized engie skills are pretty bad unless you trait them heavily. I tried using a turret at low level but it died pretty fast almost every time I used it. (except when I was part of a pve zerg and I wasn’t targetted). I’ll give it a try though, as I still have plenty of skills to unlock.
As a comparison, a necro minion master is also fairly week without a full trait on minions. Then, if used in large quantities they become great.
The tool kit might be a good melee swap weapon, but again, I won’t have traits for it because they’re all invested in gadgets and rifle. However, the flamthrower is traited in the line with the rifle and might be my melee alternative.
Thanks for the suggestions
I don’t think you have to trait to use the net turret effectively, as it is utility and not a damage skill. Plus its more for the tool belt skill you want it, which imo synergizes well with rifles net. And it also has a 30 second cd, one of the lowest for turrets which means you can pick it up if you had placed it down and you’ll be able to use it again soon.
And for the toolkit…there isn’t a huge impact that traits do for it. A trait to lower cd, one to cause a small cripple..nothing big you would miss out on.
Would that mean that I’m unable to use any runes that exceed level 35, that of the armour?
Yup. If you transmute the look on higher level armor you would be able to exceed it though.
Protean armor is level 35 it seems.
I would say try using net turret too when you use your rifle. Net Shot from rifle, plus net turrets utility, plus the turret itself means you can be pretty safe from melee mobs when leveling up.
Maybe having the tool kit can help you kill faster too. Something along the lines of magnet pull —> pry bar —> blunderbuss —> jump shot —>overcharged shot.
Plus the tool kit fits with the iron legion charr theme

I vote for this to be the engineers official anthem
I would like to see an elite skill for engies where if an engineer does it by himself, he just summons a small mechanical minion. If five engineers are around though…those minions combine!
It would help in defining the role of the engineer.. being able to summon kitten stuff like no other class can do!
What about elites
1. supply drop?
AOE and knock back the fudge out of everything and keep engi away from his or her precious packs. (Beware the engi who drops on a downed teammate to interrupt stomp: that player may know how to fight… and kill you.)
2. Elixir X?
USE BIDE TIME SKILL or confuse and run away!! (seriously don’t keep going back into the tornado.)
3. Mortar?
LOOK OUT FOR STABILITY Funny story, I fought an engineer who pulled out mortar close range in the middle of dodges and fights, and he proceeded to use it, firing skills that all had to be preformed at a 800 radius away. So i sat behind him shooting him with EG #1. and he died. and there was much rejoicing. Guess he just really wanted stability in those last moments. The end.
Funny story on the mortar one! and these tips seem good enough :P
You’re giving terrible advice in general actually, like the slick shoes. Engineers run towards you with that skill, not away.
I don’t know about other engineers but running toward people with slick shoes on doesn’t seem to work most of the time. I would see someone resing or stomping, try to interrupt them with slick shoes and…nothing happens. Of course I could be wrong.
I actually like to think that 1 on 1 my engineer is pretty dangerous.
So do I pal, so do I.
don’t forget fighting a naked engy:
he probably got tired of paying all his repair fees and you should just end his misery.
Please don’t turn this thread into another whine thread, there are plenty of you doing that already on basically the entire Engineer forum.
it’s the only time we can enjoy ourselves honestly, im having more fun in other threads coming up with funny kitten nerfs for Engineers and reading stuff like this then actually playing
it’s way to much work to even keep up in PvP and higher level fractals anymore, and it’s just boring to have people glaze over me in pity
i’m having fun on the forums whining cause it’s actually fun to make fun of ourselves haha
Some of us aren’t having nearly the amount of heartache and suffering the rest of you are, and we would like to have at least a few threads where we can talk strategy, tactics, etc.
You can have your fun complaining since that’s what makes you happy, but please leave at least a few threads for the rest of us.
I have no problem (in theory) with creating threads to poke fun at the problems of the engineer profession, but I agree that it’s over-reaching to actively devolve all the threads into that.
On the other hand, this topic lends itself perfectly to making fun of ourselves. I mean, the game has been out for four months and no one even posted any counter-engi strategies until this estimable engi did (yes, there were a few threads about countering juggernaut/stability before it got nerfed, but nothing about the current engi profession). The OP is right on with his assessments but it’s still kind of funny, when you think about it.
I knew that when making this thread people would use it to make fun of ourselves and had that in mind when I did it (a guide to beating an underpowered class lawl). But I ended up posting what I think is some good information that can actually help play against an engie better. Or just learn more about them in general.
(edited by Penguin.5197)
This thread is just neat as an overview of what engineers can do. As a new engineer, I appreciate it.
Ha guess it can also work that way too, your welcome!!
Edit: also took aydes comment into consideration for r.kick.
(edited by Penguin.5197)
Although no one ever has asked or posted something along the lines of “Gee willy, that engineer was tough! How am I supposed to fight him!?” I will still make a guide on how to counter numerous utilities, kits and weapon sets an engineer can use and the most effective way to mitigate their usefulness.
Rifle: A decent overall weapon, the rifle is only hampered by having many of its attacks close ranged. Staying far can be effective against rifle users, as Net Shot and Jump Shot are really slow and give plenty of reaction time to dodge. If in close range, it can be a good idea to strafe, as blunderbuss gets canceled if the enemy moves a little to the side of the engineer.
Pistols: Can throw all the damaging conditions consistently at you. Use condition removals, condition transfers and if you do not have it, it could be best to rush in and finish the fight as quickly as possible before the conditions start to hurt you.
Flamethrower Kit: Although mostly only useful in medium-close range, it is a good idea to get as close to the engineer as possible, while strafing and preferably with a swiftness buff. If close enough while strafing, flame jet, the flamethrower kits main source of damage, will almost always miss.
Although I have not tested it myself, I have heard from other engineers that hitting someone with retaliation while using the flamethrower hurts the engineer himself just as much.
Bomb Kit: Anyone playing with bomb kit will most likely try to kite you. Simply switch to a long range weapon and watch them fail horribly. If they actually try and attack you with it simply moving away stops you from getting hit at all.
Grenade Kit: Attack from long range against grenadiers. The spread and slow travel time means that most grenades will miss unless playing against a good grenadier. If fighting a good grenadier he is most likely predicting where you will move next and as such move in an unpredictable pattern to throw him off.
Elixir Gun: Will most likely only take out elixir gun for a small heal. If he tries to attack with auto attack, laugh at his damage and put him out of his misery.
Tool Kit: Probably one of the better Engineer kits and is useful in many situations for him. If the kit is taken out at range, prepare for a magnet pull but do not dodge as soon as it activates, wait about a second. A successful magnet pull will most likely be followed up by the almighty pry bar to your face, so be sure to use a condition removal straight away unless you want to end up killing yourself.
Rocket Boots: Laugh out loud while advancing toward the self-knocked downed engie for free hits. Extra free hits if you got swiftness on. Although if hit by its toolbelt counterpart rocketkick, be prepared to quickly remove the burn or suffer massive damage.
Oil Slick: That black stuff coming out the engineer pants you are chasing isn’t because he is crapping his pants in fear. He is actually trying to knock you down. Works only half the time but for safety precautions simply chase him while being a little to the left or right of the engie.
Rifle Turret: Laugh at its pathetic damage and act like it does not even exist.
Net Turret: Can limit movement and be pretty dangerous is left unchecked. Should be a priority to destroy. You should also be aware that its tool belt counterpart has a 360 degree radius and can be shot by the engineer even if you are directly behind him as long as he has you targeted.
Rocket Turret: Can be overcharged to knock you down. Destroy it quick, it goes down very easily and its long cd means you wont see it for the rest of the fight.
Flame Turret Not a priority if long ranged. Though any melee can destroy it quick due to its pretty low defense.
Supply drop: AOE and knock back the fudge out of everything and keep engi away from his or her precious packs. (Beware the engi who drops on a downed teammate to interrupt stomp: that player may know how to fight… and kill you.)
Elixir X: USE BIDE TIME SKILL or confuse and run away!! (seriously don’t keep going back into the tornado.)
Mortar: LOOK OUT FOR STABILITY Funny story, I fought an engineer who pulled out mortar close range in the middle of dodges and fights, and he proceeded to use it, firing skills that all had to be preformed at a 800 radius away. So i sat behind him shooting him with EG #1. and he died. and there was much rejoicing. Guess he just really wanted stability in those last moments. The end.
Also feel free to post any more tips you have when fighting against engineers!
(edited by Penguin.5197)
That turret looks like it would shoot too fast to be a rifle turret. It mightve been an elite that at the last minute scrapped and replaced with mortar. (How else could you explain how rushed and broken mortar feels)
Anyways hope to see that turret usable soon and btw that engie charr on that artwork makes those karma pauldrons look kitten
Actually what the heck, everything on that page looks better than what we have…look at that flamethrower! https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/engineer/
(edited by Penguin.5197)
Hahah, wow. This is a pretty funny troll thread. Most of the points are (when run through the sarcasm translator) pretty okay.
Also: Yeah, turrets are good for that. Not even gonna lie – I did it to deal with the high materials cost of crafting. Haven’t tried it for karmafarming. Could probably get contribution to three or four different events simultaneously, if turret placement was intelligently done.
Up to 3 actually. For some reason his fourth one always broke lol Mostly cause of misplacement or not enough people in that specific area
I can’t believe no one is talking about how turrets are used to E X P L O I T E !
All engies can just go afk and bake cookies while turrets do everything, its not like the things draw aggro at all.
A “friend of mine” used to do that actually to farm karma before jugs were introduced. He would put up turrets on top of the wall on the penitent waypoint camp with self repair trait and would go off to do other events in the area. The turrets would not be destroyed because a) turrets were traited and b) there used to be lots of bots protecting the area at that time.
btw it was a friend and definitely not me. No sireee.
As a human though, I run with the Hounds for racials while PvEing. It’s quite useful to distract Elite mobs while grabbing a Skill Point or whatnot.
In PvP though I would definitely say Supply Crate at all times.
Supply crates does that too. I use it to bypass champ karka all the time
Also reduce the oil slick duration, its too long as it is.
I dont think tomorrow is one of the major monthly patches though is it? If its not we probably wont be seeing any major updates…probably a few small ones like increased cooldown on some tool kit skills…or reduced jump shot range to stop cheating on jps. Nothing to worry about :S
New kit added:
Minigun kit: Walk 50% slower while wielding it but allows you to shed manly tears
I would also accept replacing mortars with a stationary gattling gun. No more slow projectiles that have a min range
(edited by Penguin.5197)
Yup dont brush off supply crate, as lame as the name is it is actually quite powerful
Or better: actually give us the versatility that seems to warrant this low damage penalty.
We don’t have it now… or traits only support single purpose builds, never a true versatile build. So if we pay the price for it, I would really like to have the actual versatility now, if you dev’s don’t mind…
It just occured to me that that is how we are paying the versatility tax. Why do we have specific trait kits and not general ones? Because the more kits we take and the more versatile we are, the less our specific traits have an impact overall. :/
Edit: Thats apart from the other ways our versatility hurts us though
(edited by Penguin.5197)
RB cures immobilize.
I net everyone after I magnet them because most often their first instinct is to dodge backwards and my goal after magneting is to get behind them a knock them further into my Zerg.
Ha I do that too..surprisingly effective. I find it weird that not more engineers do that though. But then again I never see any in wvw
Let the game play itself! Of course! Smart idea!
FA, you need to talk to your guys. Because when I see things like the following screenshot, it makes me facepalm yet also makes me laugh so hard. But on the other side, you’re keeping IoJ preoccupied, so keep at it! XD
When I came in the jp that place was very hostile. Ioj didnt let my guildie do puzzle so we went on an Ioj killing spree. It was fun and I’m sure they got some people too. Before I logged off I went screw it and ran straight into them hah! They got me good
Here is a screenshot of my point of view
Nothing good has ever come out of keeping silent. If there is a problem, speak up on it.
That doesn’t mean whine about it, just bring up the topic and give some valid reasons on why that is a problem. If enough people come to the same conclusion and start a topic on it then there is a better chance of it getting fixed than just staying silent.
And i got to say just because you can zerg dps the boss dosnt mean its the best way my guild likes to come out with 0 deaths and more silver than what we started with. Insted of bunch of repair bills
You make like… 70s per dungeon run on average. Do you really die so much in a dungeon that that isn’t enough?
What is wrong with the monthly being different than the previous month? No one ever said the monthly would have a 500 salvage challenge every time. I for one like how the monthly always has new things to do and forces people out of their safety hole. Go out, explore and have fun, and if you don’t like the current ones there is always next month.
To be honest, one of the main reasons I don’t use it is because of other classes. I really annoys me that I throw it down on an ele, thief, or mes because they ALWAYS use their escape skill and end up outside of the healing radius.
It annoyed me when they do that do. Earlier today I saw some ele panic, go to mist form and just stand there..not getting healed….not doing anything just wasting time when she could have been reviving ugh. But either way unless a warrior/guardian/engie downs I just wait for them to move/warp/whatever before I even attempt to throw it.
The only situation I found to equip mortar was for its stability against the harpies in fractals. And even then it was so painful to use with how weak those shots are.
The shots definitely need to go faster and get its bugs fixed. And increase its damage. Actually even then supply crate will probably just still be better in most situations.
I am almost positively sure that when the weapon stats are added to kits, another slight nerf will happen and we are back to square one.
Doesn’t seem logical given engineers skillls are already balanced to take account of those stats (from amulet/jewel instead of weapon) in sPvP.
You know I actually forgot about spvp (who hasnt lol) and I really hope you are right.
