Revenant's starting zone?

So apparently revenants existed before Zhaitan died but simultaneously only came into being after he was killed, huh?

Sounds like Rytlock accidentally knocked over a bowl of wibbily wobbly, timey wimey stuff. That’ll be a pain to clean up.

or, you know, they were around, you just couldn’t play them.

it’s like saying norn and asura didn’t exist in tyria until eye of the north. just because it wasn’t there for you to see doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.

and for the hundreth time, “time traveling” in order to let players play stuff that happened before the campaign they started on is nothing new to the franchise (see: starting on nightfall and heading back to prophecies), and there was never nearly as much whining then as there is now.

Who’s whining? I was paraphrasing Doctor Who.

Personally, I don’t really see the problem here: this is an MMO, because of the nature of MMOs, I can go with Rytlock and Eir into the Ascalon Catacombs, then kill Zhaitan, go back with Rytlock and Eir into the Ascalon Catacombs again, then go help Scholar Brogun kill the Svanir Shaman for the bazillionth time.

Also, Rytlock is the first ever Revenant. That’s the problem people have, I think.

Cleanup of Orr. (Not what you think...)

The world must change. If Anet can create a separate instance for the old Orr, great. If they can’t, then let the content be lost. We will win more than we lose anyway.

Existing content doesn’t have to be removed for the world to change. I would rather they add new content in new zones and leave the existing world as is for those who like that. It’s been what, about two years since Zhaitan was killed, how much do people think Orr will have really changed in two years?

HoT is Underwhelming

I’m interested in the expansion and I’m 90% likely to pick it up but I think that what they’ve revealed so far is not hugely impressive – from the vague details we’ve had on masteries and how they’ll work it “feels” like a Feature Pack – but we’ll see once the details come on the number and types of masteries, the number of zones being added, the size of the zones, details on the story lines in those zones and so on.

I’m curious if they’re adding actual Story Journal content or if this’ll be just be open world maps. If there’ll be dungeons (and work done on making dungeons better). If there’ll be more guild missions and so on. Stuff “hidden” within the details of the features listed on the HoT page but I suspect there won’t be.

I think that the fact that they have answered so few questions about what’s in, and perhaps more importantly, what’s not in the upcoming expansion and what upcoming updates to expect is very telling. I don’t think this expansion is all that far along at all, it’ll be a long time coming, with little new content between now and release, IMO.

And then you use another 80 or so level up tomes and the masteries are finished, too. So where’s the problem?

You’re assuming that tomes will level up masteries. They probably will not, the same way that they don’t give PVP Ranks or World Experience at the moment, they’re separate systems.

Saying that the experience bar will change to a mastery training bar once you hit level 80 doesn’t mean that masteries will behave the same way that experience does now.

I dont like being locked out of content nor do i like meaningless progression. I like to enjoy the content with complete characters. So i am thankful its account bound. I only have to suffer through the progression grind once that way. Good content should stand strong on its own. There is no need to lock it behind progression.

Unfortunately the MMO genre is plagued by this grindy mindset and players seem to enjoy/need it to a certain degree. I do admit it helps keep people invested in the game if they have spent a lot of time and grinded through a lot of progression. So i can see why anet has done it. Im just grateful they avoided more gear progression and are making masteries account bound. That makes it bearable for players like me.

I think it’s all a matter of perspective, you see the progression as a barrier that blocks access to the content, I see the progression as a reward that unlocks new content. It’s kind of a “is the glass half empty or is the glass half full” thing.

I think they’re aiming for it to feel like a reward rather than a barrier, that’s one of the reasons it’s account bound but ultimately, whether or not it feels like a grind depends on how long it takes to unlock access to the content.

Considering that there’s content gated behind the masteries that’s 1 to 1.5 years of not being able to access that content. I won’t even comment on Windu’s suggestion of several months directly contributed towards leveling masteries. If that isn’t grind, then what is?

Setting aside speculation on the time it will take to max out all masteries (something I’m sure they’ve considered and will probably be in the region of months or years for most players) you seem to have the idea that there is content gated behind the maximum level of a mastery. That’s a massive and, I believe, incorrect assumption. If you need to max out your masteries to access content (especially group content) then it’s fair to assume that it’ll be something your average player will be able to do quickly enough. It seems far more likely to me that you’ll need a rank or two to access the content, the other ranks will be for convenience or speed or flavour.

For example, imagine I need gliding to access a boss battle or other major piece of content. Having rank one or two would be enough to get across a gap in the map at its narrowest point, higher ranks will just allow me to access the battle from more places on the map, across larger distances.

In the case of history or language masteries, you might need basic Mursaat to access vendors (basically pointing at stuff, jingling your coins and saying “how much?”) but as you become more proficient with their language they will converse with you more freely, giving more lore and flavour in your interactions.

“Rip 15%” Do you think that game stores shouldn’t make profits on sale? How much do you think EA or Ubisoft or Apple or Microsoft or GoG take?

Apple is just as bad or worse. That doesn’t make Steam better, it just means they’re one of several well marketed parasites instead of being the only one.

The important thing here is that Steam is doing something really disgusting with SteamOS. They’re layering a very light layer of customization on top of other people’s work, with essentially zero innovation, and just leveraging it along with their brand to make enormous amounts of money off of yet other people’s work. They are contributing almost nothing of their own to any aspect of the product, either the OS or the games themselves.

“Really disgusting”? Your hyperbole is off the charts! So, they’ve done the same as any other linux distro then? And that’s “really disgusting”? If the people who contribute code to Linux or any other open source project don’t want people to use it they shouldn’t have released it using that particular licensing scheme, but you know what, they’re not complaining. They knew what they were doing and they’re happy to allow Valve, Redhat, Google and anyone else who wants it to use it. Valve will be promoting Linux as a platform, and because of the nature of the Linux license agreements they’ll be contributing code back to the Linux codebase.

They are a marketing engine and a DRM engine. They might have less awful DRM and be more reliable than EA (true), and they might be less controlling of the market than Apple (also true), but at least EA and Apple actually create things of some kind of their own.

Erm, Steam is Valve. Valve make things of their own. I’d have thought any gamer would be aware of that. They’ve also provided a means for Indies to get their products onto the same stage as some of the largest publishers granted I’m not sure that last thing is so great considering the sheer amount of dross being shovelled onto Steam at the moment but to say that they don’t create things is just wrong.

No corp can deal with Steam without them trying to take over. Steam is a monopoly with greedy selfish business practices.

I don’t know where this comes from but you need to look up the word monopoly, I think. Being successful or the biggest is not the same as having a monopoly.

As for their “greedy selfish business practices” are you sure they’re not just “business practices”? From what I’ve seen they’re much the same or better than most other online game shops.

the game NEEDS new dungeons.

it is obvious that the PvE player base is much bigger than pvp\wvw player base.
and most of that player base are players that does dungeons more than anything else.

Not having new dungeons would be a deal-breaker for me

I don’t know why you’d say that most pve players run dungeons more than anything else, where’s your source for this?

I don’t think we’ll see any new dungeons this expansion. They would have said it if we were getting some.

I think that the primary way they’ve addressed this is by making ascended equipment account bound. I have 9 level 80s and all of them have full exotic equipment and I pass around my ascended equipment to the ones I play most at any given time. It takes a trip to the bank to swap the equipment but that’s quick.

If they gave me nine times the laurels that they gave someone with one character then I’d be rich.

The Personal Story was never designed to be replayable on a single character, so making a change like that would involve a lot of revision (updating and testing hundreds of story steps). It’s simply out of scope.

The updated story steps will start with A Light in the Darkness.

Will it be possible to choose to have our characters “reset” to this point if we’ve gone past them or will this just be for characters who haven’t reached that stage in the PS yet?

yeah I was hoping for a quality look at the UI since that is the meat and potatoes of the system.

From the look of the UI (and the area in general) a lot of what we’ve seen seems like placeholders at the moment, like “((Mastery Point))” for example, I doubt the (()) will be there in the long run. The passive mobs also indicate to me that this isn’t as far along as we might think (although that might just be a bug in that particular build, software doesn’t care if you’re about to demo something, it breaks at the worst times).

I imagine that the UI will look similar to PvP reward tracks but they may be planning on a new style of UI and their internetcustomerphobia prevents them from showing anything there yet.

Pifil.5193

I consider that a pretty strong possibility, it would be a tidy way to give a fresh start. My only argument against this is that they introduced the writs so recently. They must have known what direction they were going with masteries, so why introduce a new item that will just be made obsolete a few months later? And what would they put in the daily chests instead?

Perhaps they’ll do this and Writs of Mastery will replace them in daily chests after HoT launches.

Maybe they will, but for our character’s birthdays they gave us scrolls that can boost a character’s level to 20 but do nothing for a character above level 20 (I have over 20 of those scrolls in my bank) so I think there’s a real possibility that they simply don’t think this is an issue at all and we will still get Writs of Experience in our daily chests even if they will be of no use to a lot of players.

[Suggestion] Color Blind Mode (merged)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pifil.5193

Pifil.5193

It is important to remember is that there are several different forms of colour blindness so what works for one won’t necessarily help with another form. For example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ishihara_compare_1.jpg
(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness )

Based on (possibly mis-remembered) conversations about colour-blindness support in the past a lot of effects of colour blindness can be alleviated by using different selectable, high contrast colour schemes in the UI. Especially around the area of ground targeting markers.

The best way would be if people could choose their own colours for UI text and good and bad ground markers (and if they wanted them “filled in”) at least.

Not being familiar with your code base that might be a hundred tiny changes in a hundred places rather than one single change in a single place. From the fact that we didn’t have a global switch to the new marker style I suspect that it would be quite a lot of quite similar changes to a lot of places. But, hey, that’s what interns are for.

Also, it would be great if the different Commander colours had different icon shapes too, blue dorito, gold circle, red triangle, purple square and so on and a high contrast/outline option. That would help a lot I think.

I don’t think that anything that gives regular XP now will give mastery XP when HoT is released, I’m sure they don’t want people filling out masteries on Day 1 using stored up Writs of Experience or Tomes of Knowledge.

I would guess that the Writs of Experience will be largely useless unless you’re planning an alt but the Tomes of Knowledge will still give a skill point. That said, maybe they’ll create a way to trade in, say, 20 Writs of Experience for a Tome of Knowledge?

Yeah. In fairness, the instant I saw “Vizier …” I put him in the “bad guy” list. That’s Viziers for you: the nicer they seem, the more concerned they seem to be for you/the princess/the kingdom/whatever, the worse they are and all the more predictable their sudden but inevitable betrayal.

I think that the word Vizier originally meant “a despicable, complete and utter kitten” in Arabic, but the meaning was changed by one of the many evil Viziers.

When I think of an “adventure”, only one in particular comes to mind: the Super Adventure Box.

Other than that, without seeing any such “adventures” in action to set the parameters (one which wouldn’t be mistaken for a simple dynamic event, and assuming they aren’t meant to be that), it’s difficult to establish what types I’d like to see. Are these simple trials or activities? Are these modified Events or Event chains? are they related to Renown Heart activities in style or format? Are they to be mini games in their own right, like certain missions in, say, Saints Row or Shadow of Mordor? I need some further details, please.

There was information on the PoI livestream, if you missed that dulfy has you covered:

http://dulfy.net/2015/02/06/gw2-poi-heart-of-thorns-gameplay-livestream-notes/

She goes into more detail there but, briefly, Adventures are marked on the map and in the world in a similar way to a Vista does now. They are repeatable, standalone activities that you can start whenever you want. They’re meant to be challenging and have their own leaderboards (speed or score based). Because they’re challenge based they’ve added button that teleports you back to the start so if you’re going for a high-score/good time and you mess up your attempt you can just restart quickly.

Examples are, shooting galleries, races, JPs and so on.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

My worries are:

  1. That the content between now and release will be too light.
  2. That there is no “Personal Story” content at launch and that we have to wait a long time for the Living World story to restart.
  3. That the maps will be too few and too similar.
  4. That there won’t be many new skins added to the game as part of basic HoT.
  5. That condition stacks won’t be “fixed” for large scale PvE.
  6. That the new systems they introduce will be abandoned in the future rather than expanded on (like guild missions).

Edit (and yes, these are the two sides of the same worry coin):

  1. That the new maps will require large numbers of players to progress through their stages so you’ll never be able to see the “final stages” of the map if you’re playing in the off hours.
  2. That large numbers of players playing will mean that the maps stay in their “final stage” and so you never see the start stage unless you get a new megaserver instance.

To elaborate, the HoT page says:

  • Experience new events and storylines.

But that seems to refer to the storyline for an area (in a similar manner to the current Hearts) or the story being told in a Dynamic Event chain. I’m wondering if there will be a Story Journal based “Personal Story” or “Living World” story too?

Having this new thread without any actual information on what the new system will bring just invites the recreation of the last one, with the same posts and conversations and complaints as the last one.

Here’s the situation, as Gaile pointed out above.

The old thread was redundant, non-constructive, and, ultimately, irrelevant, because Colin posted saying that ANet is working on a new Trait system and that some player feedback had been taken into account when developing that system. Therefore, there was absolutely nothing of value that could be added to that thread, which is why Gaile said she should’ve closed it right when Colin posted.

However, imagine the rage at the travesty of closing that thread WITHOUT opening another thread focused on Traits feedback. Why, the forums would explode! Players would launch their own personal vendettas against ANet, or further embellish the ones they’ve already begun.

So, Gaile opened this new thread. Yes, there aren’t any new facts or concrete details we can discuss – right now. Which is why she suggested to step away from the entire topic for a while, instead of going through the same cycle as the first thread. But people can’t do that, I predict, so it’s a lose-lose situation for everyone.

Please, it’s not complex, I get it. What I’m saying is that by closing the old thread all Gaile has achieved is moving that conversation to this new one (and better one thread than a hundred new threads, I agree) so she should have left the old one open until there was some new information on the system. It was premature. As it is when they release new information in a week or two she’ll just have to close this one and create another.

Having this new thread without any actual information on what the new system will bring just invites the recreation of the last one, with the same posts and conversations and complaints as the last one.

This entire conversation is irrelevant. There will be effectively no non-HoT players in the game a couple months after it drops. The remainder will buy the game or quit. This is a relatively fruitless argument about a hypothetical.

and what if i am planning on proving you wrong, still irrelevant then?

How will you prove him wrong? By not buying the expansion and still playing the base game? That would be relevant to you, yes, but the few players who won’t buy it and don’t just quit are statistically irrelevant, which I think was JLHiggs point.

I bet you theres only gonna be LS on the new maps, or at least locked for people with HoT, which is FINE.

Unlike what people love to say here, ANet is not trying to squeeze every penny from you, not when they give you bag loads of FREE content and even allow you to trade in-game gold directly for gems.
You could have just bought the game on day one, not spend another cent and you haven’t been locked out of anything until today, nothing at all. How many MMOs can you say the same?

Very good points. Those who don’t buy the expansion can continue to play the GW2 content they have now and will no doubt be able to play on the new WvW map.

I personally do not believe that LS series 3 will continue in the base game. It may but I think it will require HoT too.

I assume skill points will be integrated in another aspect of the game, for example:
You get 1 skill point per daily dungeon or for each 10 lvl fractal… would make a total 8 or 5 skill days per day… that would be acceptable.

Yeah, for dungeon and fractal runs the end reward chest should have skill point scrolls.

Similarly they should add them to open world boss chests, WvW chests and so on. That won’t match the current rate at which you can gain levels but they can add them as rewards for dynamic events and so on.

Sounds boring to me. I guess I’d be moving on if I had your view of the matter. Hope you find your mmo without content gating.

Yep, personally I prefer this method of content gating to a gear based one. I also think that people are assuming that this will be some kind of punitive grind to “unlock” the first set of mastery related content then the next then the next, I don’t think that will be the case. I suspect that it will be far more accommodating than people think, so for example, mastery level one in gliding will get you to and around the canopy but mastery level 100 will make it a lot more convenient and allow you to take greater short cuts and so on.

As for the fear that it will be a “gear score” because people will see your mastery level on your name plate, use that to judge you and put it on LFG messages “Arah p1 mastery level 60+ only” or whatever. Well, I think the idea is daft but I’ve got absolutely no doubt that some (small) portion of the player base will feel that way. They feel that way about achievement points already so they will about this too.

Personally, I like it when they make it that obvious; it means that they separate themselves from the reasonable people who know that it means very little. Time spent playing a game is no indication that you can play it well and as the mastery level shown will be the same for all your level 80s, it’s certainly no indication that you can play a particular profession well).

Tomes of Knowledge and Masteries

It is logical to assume they will continue the way they do now. So they will grant “level ups” (one level and one skill point) for characters below level 80 and “skill ups” for level 80 characters. Similarly I expect my skill scrolls to continue to work. If either of these is not the case then they will give us plenty of warning. Or there will be (forum) war!!!111!!11111!!!one!

I assume they will not grant any progress towards masteries as “the Mastery training bar completely replaces the experience bar, players who’ve reached level 80 will no longer gain levels but will instead train Masteries” so I believe it will be completely separate system that you switch over to from the experience system (in much the same way that sPvP or WvW rank are separate). I expect they will add “sips/flasks/jugs/potions of mastery” to go alongside the various potions of Karma, PvP, WvW and so on.

Hopefully Rubi will answer this tomorrow.

What will happen to Tomes of Knowledge for lv 80 characters after HoT?
Will we still get SP from them?
Will they give us a level of mastery?
Will they give us a mastery point?

I’m hoping they’ll give us a level of mastery and a mastery point to replace the exp level and skill point. I expect they’ll just become useless for lv 80’s though.

Any thoughts on this?

That’s a very good question. I mean they’re currently giving us them for the daily login rewards, in PvP tracks and so on, I hope they won’t become useless* in the future.

*As in useless for those of use who aren’t planning on making any further new characters. At the moment they’re another skill point, at least. My dream would be at least a skill point.

I doubt they will give us mastery progress though; they don’t want someone popping a few hundred of these to unlock everything on day one and then complaining that there’s nothing to do.

I’ve seen the way he handles himself in dungeons. I’m not worried.

Hehehe, yeah, I can agree with that.

Just confirmed in the blog post that the Mastery system as a whole requires HoT.

The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns.

Hmmm… curious. I wonder what happens to those who don’t have HoT? I mean, will they continue to gain skills as they do now or will they just… stop at level 80? That explains why they have to make changes to the trait acquisition system.

"Challenging" content in open world concern

Marionette was way better in that regard, due to a none zerg phase in it, where individual skill of players who went in actually mattered. That was the beauty of Marionette fight.

Agreed. I found the premise ludicrous, but the Marionette fight design/gameplay was probably the best this game has seen.

Yeah, but it’s incredibly frustrating when a player (or group of players) is held back because some random players who don’t understand or just can’t handle the content happen to be in the same map. Happened to me during the Marionette fight; every time we got down our “boss” but then watched helpless while other groups failed spectacularly. Fun sure but increasingly frustrating.

I hope that the challenge part won’t be finding a map with players that know the fight like in previous attempts to make challenging content.

And also that limitations in the games systems won’t be adding to the “challenge” (e.g. that HoT will allow condition specs to contribute as much as power specs can).

although I have still no idea what to do with all hose insta-level-20 scrolls….

farm keys :S

That’s a good idea… would allow me to see all the little branches of the personal story too as I have 20+ something of them now… might as well clear up a couple of bank slots (it’s especially annoying that the 1st birthday and 2nd birthday ones don’t stack).

All classes at lvl 80
78+ tomes of knowledge
Materials for an ascended heavy armor

That is my to do list, I’m working on my 3rd item.

they said you cant get Revanent to 80 instant.

Who’s “they” and where did “they” say that?

Revenant Skill Color?

every class got their own color for skills, thief grey guardian blue necro green
what you think of revenant?
im thinking Red

The icons tend to match the profession colour and red has already been taken by the elementalist (ironically the elementalist is the exception here, as the elementalist skill icon colours depend on the elemental attunement)

Cyan is still available and like as others have said the GW Ritualist was Cyan so it kinda matches but of course it could be a brighter or darker red.

Day 1 Revenant: Level 1 or Level 80?

This and the fact that I’ve done the npe with one toon to 80 and did not like it at all. I’ll be going instant 80 w/o question.

I’ll wait and see what they do before I decide. I’d love it if they “fixed” the “fixes” they put in for the NPE: as in the mangled personal story, improve Trait acquisition and restore the Trait point distribution (one point every 5 levels starting at level 15 please so I can get a better feel for the profession earlier on) for this expansion. So I’ll try it when the expansion releases but if they make a bad job of it this time (especially the Trait revamp) I’ll skip to the end.

I have a bunch of scrolls and tomes stored up already and I have nine level 80s, including two guards, one under the NPE but thankfully created before the NPE was shipped so I had the Traits unlocked already so I’ve also “done my time” when it comes to levelling the traditional way.

Will HOT give us a "new" Orr?

Surely it’ll take quite a while for Orr to be restored? It was at the bottom of the sea for a few hundred years (up until quite recently) and it’s still full of undead (including undead dragons). It should take decades (or centuries) for it to be restored.

Killing Zhaitan shouldn’t be like flicking a switch from Corruption On to Corruption Off.

So every single Sylvari in the Pact choose to join Mordremoth at the exact same time when the Pact attacked Maguuma?

Well, we don’t know it was every Sylvari (or do we? Maybe I missed that). It might just have been enough “undercover” nightmare court members to sabotage some of the fleet. The battle shown on the ground could have been against nightmare court sylvari and those from the other pale tree.

Or it could be something similar to when Kralkatorrik first woke, simply passing over the land as it flew south was enough to create the brand and corrupt nearly everything it passed by. Maybe Mordremoth fully awakening was enough to corrupt all nearby Sylvari?
