Keeping in place lol, something like that is only possible against guardians or other necromancer (and if we exclude bad players). And against meditation guardians in WvW this is also really hard.

Lets face it most profession can escape a necromancer with ease if they have the right skills equipped and know what they are doing.

No even with a chillmancer build most professions can disengage if they know what they are doing.

Golem’s charge 1200 range, spectral grasp, 1200 range, Doom, 1200 range, if either of those hit disengaging is not possible, except with thieves’ hard to catch even then, you can just keep chaining. Then there is dark path which is also 1200. Because of all these that can be used in the same build, thieves especially can be very unlucky when fighting a necro

This is completly wrong. With a build you pointed out you can have at max 2 points in spite. You loose at least 20% damage from Close to death. We have exactly 2 options to get protection, not counting runes. These are rather long durations, but also long cooldowns, so if any of those are stolen corrupted etc. you dont have that uptime. Also when going 3 in curses, and 6 in DM you cant go 6 into Soul reaping. You miss on 50% extra crit while in DS. If you use zerker gear to still do damage and shrouddancing you will die, your spectral skills wont be of much use, as the lf generation either overflows, or you stay in DS and loose you 100% fury uptime, and cripple your potential dps as you simply dont have the amount of damage from 6 in SR and 6 in Spite. Also leaving you even more vulnerable when you exit DS. Also, this announced changes did NOTHING to improve our lockdown or chasing potential. Everything you can do now, you can do after the patch in that regard.

Check your premises. I would post the build now if the editor’s server was up. The set up is 0/4/6/0/4 so its not what you think. If you are investing into spite, the changes will hardly help you. In fact you will run into the same survivability walls power necros normally do.

Sure if you want to talk pure damage this is not what you want, but if you want viable damage, it doesnt get much better than this. You cannot disregard runes and sigils, because Anets has to account for those when balancing. For instance with sigils and blood is power, Im sitting at over 2300 power (whch can be achieved within 2 seconds and then theres a permanent 74% crit chance thanks to furious demise, do you really need close to death? or the spite trait? Sure going for close to death would be a ridiculous improvement to the damage capacity, but what is the point of that if locked and pwned

Because dd and axe crits do more damage than life blast crits.

Permanent protection is achieved using rune of the forgeman. However there is a 7 second gap after last grasp activates the second time, so i suppose it is virtually permanent protection. Still, 53 seconds of protection is still quite insane with the 20k hp and ds

WARNING*** This thread not for condi necros

If you don’t appreciate the changes made, then chances are you are running a tank condi build, probably the meta. If this is the case then the changes will not help you at all.

After messing with the build editor, I have noticed that the changes have made the necromancer the most survivable damage dealing profession:

The reduction of all spec armour cds have made it possible to gain protection permanently . Worth noting that protection is most valuable when your armour is high with decent hp, i am happy to tell you that necros can now gain this protection with over 20k hp and 2600 armour (3000 while channeling) without sacrificing damage

The increase in swiftness duration from the warhorn has made permanent swiftness easier to get, while applying permanent cripple. From someone whose play style revolves around movement, this is invaluable.

We all know investing into both death magic and curses gives you permanent fury, but now investing into the death magic line to get it, now increases both damage and survivabilty. With the change to unholy sanctuary. You can now “death flash” (going in and out of death shroud for fury) when near death, burst and still live. You couldnt before because of the death shroud cooldown.

If you are skilled and geared correctly, you can completely lock down your target while dealing very high damage before taking any damage from your target. Im sorry thieves but from what im seeing, killing a good power necro is now substantially more difficult, near impossible. (sucks cuz i wanted to make a thief).

The real effectiveness of the changes is not from the changes themselves but how they work with the existing mechanics. If you notice, I used the word permanently 4 times. It is worth mentioning that all 4 can be done simultaneously in the same power necro build.

Sorry guys but i don’t think i will be posting the build yet, but i assure you the changes made were hardly minor.

Isn’t it the exact opposite… these changes do nothing for those who have mastered the class, it really only helps the people who havent…. lowered the skill floor that’s about it.

I use DD, and only hitting one target has always been a pain, I think this change also means you get double the ds from dagger auto. I use spec armour, last grasp and spec attunement for pvp and WvW and typically have to drop the cd for armour to be effective, now, if i drop it, I for sure will notice that 40 sec cd with 18 sec total duration.

and that ds finish….that is also a huge change, i cant count how many times i had to bail after downing in pvp bcause i cant finish in ds (I hardly use the ds stomp)

I just realised, i wonder why they dont allow spec armour to grant stability as well for 5 seonds

The changes appear underwhelming but for people who’ve mastered the necro class the changes are really good. Ive been playing necro since around release and I can tell you that these changes will drastically improve my play style, especially dropping the cooldown for spec armour and last grasp by 10 seconds, monumental improvement for me.

The only things i wish they had done was allow necros to gain vigor, and added a weapons teleport skill (even if it had a 60 second cd) if those happened, i would probably delete my other toons.

The difference between conditions and and direct damage is, with direct damage you can do only direct damage with not much of a drawback as long as you have a ranged weapon, or can cover ground very quickly.

With conditions, you need to spec for survivability, either through stealth for thieves, DS for necros, Blocks and blinds for guardians (burn on block ftw) and the typical mesmer shenanigans. If you don’t spec to survive when using pure conditions, you will be useless. Damage specs will shred you to pieces and you will be left wondering what happened to your damage.

Guys, you gotta relax, this mmorpg model hasn’t been done before and its only been 2 years. Also consider this, in other mmorpgs, you have to do alot more work to get good stuff, which has its appeal to the hardcore crowd. If gw2 were to go hardcore, then there would be reason to complain.

Its an interesting idea but it may not work. It is a mark of prestige not just because of its price but because you don’t see it all that much compared to the number of players you do see at any given time.

For its prestige to dissapear, a lot of people will have to be running around with it for a while, which as you know will happen. This will cause chaos in WvW and events where a large number of players are gathered.

After all the confusion, a new problem may come up, the tag may turn into an aesthetic icon similar to a title. It will lose not only its prestige but its functionality because everyone likes adding visual effects to their toon.This is even more likey with the addition of new colours.

Older players may not cause this to happen but the newer ones because they won’t see the tag as we see it, something to help command large events. Newer players will likely start using it to lead parties, and if that happens Anet will not only have to charge for it but redesign it to rebrand it.

I actually quite like the general idea. The whole precursor thing is a little silly. Not only the idea of praying for it to drop, but praying for the one you want to drop. With a “prime” system instead of precursors, i would be comfortable with legendaries being harder to obtain (no i don’t have one yet). Perhaps to prime the weapon you have to have beaten all the world bosses, gained map completion and attained max rank in PvP, PvE and WvW.

Some other minor stuff should be done in between with the weapon you want as a legendary to turn it into a legendary including some serious crafting for customization, with each recipe slightly tweaked depending on varying aesthetic options. As it is now, as a necro, there are no legendaries I want, cuz of the christmas-y effects on them.

With requirements like these maybe there will be some weight to holding a legendary weapon. These days I look at someone pass with sunrise and i don’t look twice cuz i’m like, that looks nice..that guy/girl’s got some good farming skills.

Also, it would be seriously nice if legendaries with these requirements actually came with an additional unique skill depending on the class. I’m pretty sure it can be done without breaking the game.

The light armour designs generally are ok, majority are pretty far from ok (e.g ascended armour) but some are pretty nice. One of them was the tribal set (aka PvP masquerade armour) This is one of the best light armour skins ever released but for some absurd reason was taken out with the changes.

I am putting in a request for it to be brought back as either an ascended craft only set, gem store purchase or pvp reward track (NOT AS A DROP)

Also can you finally enable two handed weapons previews? its a little odd this isn’t enabled yet no?

Not the PvE masquerade armour, but there used to be a pvp version that people were’t able to get. Where is it now? Did it ever really exist? Imo they should have used that as an ascended armour skin instead of the atrociousness that was released.

I can understand that, but there are so many skins and there are most certainly going to be more. I may decide to swap to different skins in future, so does that mean the $200 plus i spend on this one would be a waste? If they wanted exclusivity, they can set it as a reward on a hard achievement, so people see them as symbols of effort, instead of going “Oh that player has money to burn”

I tried to get a black lion weapon skin that is unfortunately not available on tp and the cost is 5 claim tickets. Considering the cost of the keys, the number of skins available and the claim tickets drop rate, 5 tickets is really too high for each weapon skin when there are about 200 available with more still coming.

Will there be a significant adjustment to the tickets drop rate (30% with no ticket scraps) or a drop in the price for keys. As it stands now, i know for sure if i can somehow get the skin i want (that isn’t in the TP), I will never buy another black lion key again.


I am aware of key farming and 1 key every 15-25 mins is a horrendously boring waste of time.

How naive i was to think Anet would not be one to stoop to something ilke this. I typically have no problems with the gem store prices, i was fine spending 10-20 bucks occasionally on permanent stuff. Its part of what kept me interested since i hate grinding. Then i came across the black lion chests.

I decided to change up the look of my toon, spent a bit of cash to get crafting mats for the Synergistic tempered blades (50 sprockets for 10 blades, when you need about 800 blades makes no sense). I messed around with some colours and weapon previews and then got around to working on my decision.

It all went well until i started on trying to acquire the tickets for a weapon skin i wasn’t interested in before. Here i was thinking well 5 tickets doesn’t seem so bad, with Anets decent pricing, $20 should be enough, so i went for it. 20 bucks and some spare gems spent on keys, I got 1 ticket and 2 scraps which is apparently a Godsend from what i found about the drop rate. There are a few 100 black lion weapon skins, if you buy the keys, it will cost you around $300 to get 5 tickets for ONE weapon skin out of hundreds and with surely more to come. What if i want to get a second skin? so i have to blow through another $300? I’m sure as hell not going to zombify myself to farm for 250 keys each time i want to get a weapon skin.

If there were like 10 skins i can understand this level of greed, but theres at least 200. How is that right by any standard?

I would very much like someone from Anet to comment on this.

What is the current state of retaliation? Does it still reflect 33% damage that bypasses armour and protection? Or does it deal flat damage based on power? If it is the former, I’m not sure why it is bypassing armour and protection. If the latter then that really doesn’t work.

On paper 3 necros in Arah should be beast. On paper 25 stacks of bleeds and other conditions and 3 necros riding signet of Undeath while fighting lupi sounds OP right? Yes I thought that as well. In reality ive never been able to get past lupi with 2 other necros. How come you ask? I have no friggin clue >_<

On paper 5 necros is baws in WvW. On paper necro is baws period.

The dude at 2:12, again the staff really doesnt help in close combat. When he turned into a dust storm or what ever it is, you could have switched to D shroud and used fear since you were already too close to start casting a mark.

That wouldn’t work because Tornado grants Stability while it is active.

Yea i wondered about that, so i checked, didnt see a stability boon, or does it look like something else in tornado form.

How much Crit Chance for Power Necro?

You pretty much have to use staff for AoE situations. Even without the marks your auto-attack pierces and hits several targets. I personally run with a staff and dagger/(focus or warhorn).

I don’t feel that way, especially if you bring double wells in your utility slots.
DS 4 + Double wells is usually enough to deal with AoE mobs, sure the CD may be 40 – 60s, but I tend to take that long before needing ro AoE bomb anything in PvE.
I also use the piercing LifeBlast trait from the Soul Reaping adept, that helps as well.

The cool downs are too long on all of those if you’re doing any speed clearing. No doubt you can clear packs quickly with just that when they are up but I just hate having to wait.

Wells are what you want to use, you are already doing high direct damage anyway. If you want them faster, you can always use the trait. I found i dont really need the wells that often because of all the damage. When i do its for dungeons, then i go with the trait that shortens the CD.

It really depends. on which part of PvE and what you are fighting in FoTM. As a necro you should probably be taking healing stuff to FoTM. I use power for the most part in PVE but all the builds can work so there is no standard. You just have to keep switching skills and weapons (sometimes the entire set) all the time.

After playing ele and moving to the necro I noticed that the necro is very weak to the ele but I enjoy it a ton.

I enjoyed watching the solo, gave the first like and comment :} You say necro is weak against elementalist, I cant disagree since i havent used elementalist or agree because of the way the necro class is. I was curious so i watched the vid again and what i dont understand is why for almost all the solos you are either using epidemic or corrupt boon, or both. Corrupt boon i can understand (Wells or flesh wurm would have been better though) but why epidemic?

Another thing is why use a staff? Its slower, and you are always staying close to the targets even against melee. You do more damage with a sceptre, can cripple melee faster which wuld have made you avoid draining the shroud in the second fight. You can also use a focus with it then use twin daggers so you can get some blinds in.

The fight at 1:31, that was pretty fun to watch and you had her nicely surprised, you froze which was alright since you are using staff already. The thing is you got close enough to use blood is power, switch to dagger (a second would have been nice here) , immobilize and tear her apart but you didn’t . It would have taken the target a few seconds to realize what just happened, by then it might have been too late (especially if you switched to well of vulns.

The elementalist was tough yea but you didnt transform :{ Im also not sure why you are using Spec walk (the move at 3:30 was pretty sweet tho)

The last fight was pure win.

In the end it looked to me that elementalist is simply easier to use in solo than necro thats why you think necro is worse.

Necromancers Underpowered in PvP Scenarios?

+1 to Nemesis (bro, i still cant get over that 9k hit, and the channel didnt even fully crit). For pvp, you want to use either a pure power build, not a power/condition hybrid. Or you can use a minion build that includes heavy survivability traits.
I hope to do a power build video different from Nemesis version. It gives 90 crit dmg, 70 crit chance and alot of out going instant damage. You can wait for the vid if i ever get around to it, or look it up the rough drafts here. User name is Reagus.

As a main Guardian, I can tell you that the moment our Spirit Weapons gained the ability to be killed by normal damage was the moment they became useless.

Did you already forget that the game is supposed to rely on the player’s skill not the toon?

But the classes are far from balanced. Compare any Warrior to any Ranger on pure output and you’ll see that. Sure a skilled Ranger can beat a stock Warrior, but in the same way a skilled Warrior can beat a skilled Ranger as the former simply has more advantage due to the Warrior having superior damage values and utility skills.

When you say the classes arent balanced, i cant agree or disagree because the game is made in such a way you don’t just tap skills to win. When you say a skilled warrior can beat a skilled ranger, you have to know exactly how skilled they are. Did they use the right skills at the right time? Did they move properly? Is the ranger using sigils and a build that help him when facing a warrior? The way the game is, its too difficult and factors too many to measure player skill (which is a deciding part when it comes to balancing).

Planning ahead is a very important thing for necromancers, you are not just supposed to react to mobs. The traits you use in Cursed shore and Straits of devastation is different from the traits used in most of the other maps. Why? because the risen are very quick and keep trying to get behind players. Other maps with slower mobs, mobs with not as much range and/or maps with not as much mobs sticking together. You use something different or you change your play style. Also there should be a difference between what you use in explorables and what you use in other places.

These changes are actually not bad. alot of thought must have gone into it, I dont know how this will affect the game as a whole but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of them were implemented. Love the one where bone minions explode when killed and balancing the spec armour with spec wall.

Dundle, very interesting! What power build are you using with this?

Power/toughness/crit dmg power build. Im not sure it really is the best idea though cuz the crit chance is 20% and for each second there is no crit, dps is lower than what it could be.
