I leveled all the way to 80 while prioritizing air attunement for damage. It’s so easy to kite monsters in circles while casting arc lightning… and of course the blind also helps.

Even better example. GW2 signs a promotional contract with my little pony, and as a result you can have a pony as a playable race. The thing is all of the ponies actions are accompanied by a big explosion of hearts, sparkles, and rainbows, which inadvertently hide the pony in the lag-cloud and as a result, you cant tell what the ponies animations are, and you cant react to its attacks.

How is it unfair when you have the option of selecting a pony too?

That’s not unfair, because I could just select the pony…you answered your own question in the question.

But not everyone wants to play the effing pony

Staff offers safe range, unrivaled aoe damage, combo fields, and superior control and supportive spells.

Tradeoff? You’re pretty much helpless against close range enemies. (edit: that’s for PVP)

-Does the Staff have better/more CC than D/D? Yes, safer too.
-Are traits any more flexible for Staff than D/D? Not really. 20 in arcana is kinda mandatory.
-Can the Staff do better damage in any elemental attunement? Depends on how many people you aoe nuke down.

Usually in hotjoin there’s an equal mix of all classes. But if I had to mention the classes I see the least, that’d be Engi, Necro, and Ele (in that order)

Idk, I’d rather take an indirect buff (QoL as they call it) and give it ground targeting instead of going for damage changes or other sort of straightforward buffs.

ele’s don’t need buffs atm. don’t want more QQ lol (I admit they’re quite hard to face right now)

Scepter – fire #2 skill.

It’s probably the hardest skill to successfully land in game, on your desired target (pvp-wise).

(And even if you do it, it’s not that rewarding)

The fact that this ability has no ground targeting like most aoe’s, plays a big part on the difficulty of landing it.

Would it be unbalanced if it had ground targeting? :|

I fail to see how stability and quickness are “fair” but the other ones aren’t?

Sounds to me like you’re a warrior.

Actualy i am playing necro and engi in pvp.

As “fair” i didnt mean if they are overopwered or that everyone have it.
They are boons and boons are ment to stay on players for some time + usualy that spell (aka guardian shout) can be activated without interupting spell that was already casted, they dont do anything and give you just boons. Also nothing wrong with stealth stomp if as soon as you are stomped he becomes visible again (just like if doing dmg).

On the other side you have normal spells. Usualy those spells if casted interupt/stops the spell that is being cast before and wasnt finished yet. And also if its some kind of transformation spell aka mist or plagueform, they dont alow you to stomp while in them unles you start the stomp while outside of it. Those spells are not “fair” and they look like abusing bug.

Most utility spells can be used without breaking channels and even while stunned.

Every class can do it, you just need to use the right skills…

What about necros

Well, it was mentioned in the TOPIC, plague form…

Isn’t plague form an elite spell? So, waste your 180s cd elite just to stomp someone?

I’m about to try fractals 20 in these days and I’d like to know if there are any big changes compared to 10-19.

Changes like, how from 10-19 the harpies at the uncategorized started throwing those knockback spheres.

I know it’s expected for the agony effects to become more deadly (got 5 AR so far), but other than that I’m really clueless.

Any help would be appreciated!

Why do people bring up that SoR kills people faster? Is one second of cast time really the difference between killing people or dying to them?

Sometimes it is sometimes it’s not. Have you never died cause you were a millisecond too late to cast your heal? It happens, if not that often. Although that passive healing in such situation would probably not have saved you either. However, in solo PvE and easy WvW fights you barely need to bother to heal if you have the signet, since it provides you constant healing. Surely one second of cast time doesn’t take away that much of your killing time, but if you are gonna talk about efficiency how could you deny signet being more efficient over glyph when you don’t even need to bother with your healing skill?

I’d take the risk and waste 1 second every 20/25 than being completely vulnerable to burst damage.

To me glyph seems like the obvious choice in healing, because it is less situational than signet, but judging by how many people use signet, it makes it seem like glyph is actually the situational one!

This thread was made not to call out every signet user (obviously it works better in some builds), but to raise awareness on how glyph isn’t a bad choice at all! In fact it’s better than signet more often than not.

Glyph can fit on anyone, while signet is only truly effective on 30 arcana DD ele’s that are fairly tanky already.

I hate it when some classes can use spells while chaneling stomp without breaking it. Elementalist mist, necromancer plague and thieves teleport some sort if downed player moves away (quickness and stability from shouts is quite reasonable, since you can use them like that all the time). Ususaly they would brake casting spell, just not with stomp x.x .
So is this right to be so or anet will fix it “soon”?

Change of Attunements in the Battle [novice]

When I was a lowbie, I picked up fire signet. It boosts your crit chance pretty good (when its off cd) and opening with it is very strong when you’re fighting monsters one by one.

Later on it’s good to drop it, though. Arcane wave is the spell that you want (arcane shield is also worth it)

Anyway, this is how I fight multiple monsters as a staff ele:

1. Start on water attunement:
2. Tag all the monsters you want to kill, make them chase you a little (not too far away or they’ll reset. You can make them chase you in circles forever though)
3. Frozen ground (water 4) (use ice spike – water 2, if you want, too)
4. Switch to fire attunement:
5. Lava font (fire 2)
6. Meteor shower (fire 5, both lava font and meteor aoes a little closer to you, predicting where the monsters are going to run, not on top of them).
7. Fire 3 OR switch to earth or air
(by now most stuff is usually dead for me)
8. If earth: Use earth 2 and then quickly use earth 5.
8.2 If air: Use air 5 and then quickly use air 2 as they get stunned.

Top it off with some autoattacks / arcane wave from PB range and I guarantee that most things will be dead without even touching you.

Careful if they’re ranged though, you’ll have to keep an even greater distance between the monsters and you if you want them to chase you.

There are many variations of this, as you become more skilled with the class you can even start with earth 4 (unsteady ground) after tagging all the monsters you want to kill, then follow up with air 5 into lava font and then water 2 -> water 4 -> arcane wave, etc.

Using arcane wave (Check the tooltip, it says combo finisher: blast) on top of different combo fields (check the tooltip of your weapon skills, like Fire 2, water 3,4,5, air 5), can trigger different effects. Try it out sometime.

Okay.

Say it with me now: It. Depends. On. What. You. Are. Doing.

If you got 0 points in the Water Line, swapping to Water to heal is a poor choice. Why? Let me elaborate. For one, any regen you do give to others or yourself is going to be substantially weaker than the regen any other class would give. Regen stacks duration, in the sense that it will tick for your (say) 10s of super weak regeneration before getting to say a Guardian’s regeneration who may have a decent chunk of +healing gear on. Wasting time to go to Earth, Eruption, then to Water, then Geyser isn’t going to help anyone if it blast finishers for 500 healing when people got 15,000 hit points.

Again, it all comes down to context of what you’re doing, who you’re with, what weapon you have equipped, what gear you have equipped, what traits you are, etc. Simply telling people to use all their attunements when they scenario may dictate otherwise is simply bad advice.

Actually, it always procs a blast finisher for 1300 minimum, and an extra 1300 with arcane wave, I guess you have NEVER proc’d a single water field blast finisher in your life for you to say something so ignorant. Let’s also not forget the invaluable frozen field for massive kiting (leading to more aoe’s) or team auras in the water attunement.

Anyway, all of this shows how clueless you are about this class. I feel sorry for the people that end up in dungeons / pvp with you.

Except air as a staff ele. Haven’t figured out a good use for air yet.

Air is all about control and mobility on the battlefield.

Aoe blind and aoe 2 seconds stun is pretty useful.
For D/D, shocking aura is amazing, same can be said about ride the lightning and updraft.

With focus you get a single target knockdown and a projectile cancelling aoe that surrounds you.

hover on the elemental icons just above your weapon skills, they describe quite accurately what each element does.

My favorite thing to do in mmorgps, mobas or games as a whole, is to burst someone down with big numbers.

If it’s aoe, even better.

I run full berserker’s and with over 105% crit damage, ele can be really fun!

Gotta love those 10k damage fire grabs, 6k burning speed or 2.1k (x2) lightning whips

You’re honestly concerned about stealth stomping when it’s only a visibility advantage?

You do know that stealth doesn’t mean invuln right?

Mistform, stability, mini engi stomps are true 100% guaranteed stomps. You can still interupt, kill, or do whatever you were doing before to the thief WHEN he is in stealth…just learn their position and act accordingly…

So all the professions with on target interrupt when downed…how are supposed to do?
Pls do explain us how it is possible to target an invisible foe and how that’s different from mistform/stability stomp…ohhh what about stealth ressing?Can mistform also stop others from stomping your ally? I’m all ears!

As an ele, it’s actually very obvious

Cast earthquake or updraft to interrupt it.

Other classes can also cast their aoe hard cc on the ground (necro’s daze or fear mark, mesmer’s knockback wave, guardian’s anything, engi’s anything, idk about warrior, etc)

Why are the people defending the whole “sit in one attunement” argument, implying that stance dancing necessarily means wasting every single cooldown even when it’s not needed?

That’s something I would expect from the kind of players that sit in one attunement, if anything (if they ever feel like adapting, they would start like that).

Using the full extents of your combos, boons on attunement and other bonuses doesn’t equal being a complete dummy and blowing all the cooldowns… so yeah, stop assuming that, dear 1-attunement-wonders.

mesmer lvl? if you have been playing this game mesmer is nowere near ele and ranger lvl. please read the part were i say what a ele and ranger are now this is what a mesmer is. portal timewarp both on 2 min and 4 min cd. other then that we have a aoe shatter that hits for 4k every 10 seconds. we are weak at 1v1 vs most every class because we are built for team but if we build for 1v1 then WE are usless in a team fight which most this game happens. but even in a team fight now mesmer is not the best choice because timewarp is only good against dumb teams that stay in it. plus mesmer have to be in the enemys to be useful but the problem with that is the same as the warrior once were in no matter how good we are its hard to get out. the problem is having a tanky class that is op at being tanky and 1v1 and team fights and ele and ranger are both of those. so if u get multiple of them its GG

I’m not sure if OP is complaining about dying to a stealthed stomp, or the fact that stealthed enemies are stomping his teammates.

For both of them, at least stealth stomping is counterable by you / your teammates. Can’t say the same about invuln / stability stomping.

I speak so skeptically because in over 800 hotjoin matches I have never been instagibbed as badly as you did… and I doubt that whatever spec that thief is using, is that rare that can pull such damage while being relatively unknown to most people.

You dont exactly have real experience in pvp lol. I could hit you for 17k backstab, literally because that damage shows up before you even know the thief is there. You dont have to be AFK because if you dont see the thief before they steal/cnd/bs you you dont really have a choice as to whether or not they are about to hit you because you dont even know they are there. I dont think you know how their combo works, thats why you told this guy he must’ve been afk simply because YOU have never experienced it. Well you are only rank 31 so, i mean really what have you experienced? Hotjoins.

Like I said, you have no real experience in pvp, thats why it hasnt happened to you yet but it will eventually.

What people who dont like this happening to them should do is start running real builds or balance builds.

One would think that in so many matches it could’ve happened at least once to me… I mean, in all this time I’ve even seen a bear thief and some other skillful ones, but still from full to zero in less than a second? Not really.

I guess their stuff was always on cooldown whenever I came around.

@OP, have you considered that maybe you lagged a bit?

As soon as bunker ele’s get their nerf bunker mesmers will take over! Full uptime on retaliation/regen/ 1/2 uptime protection and a personal tank! Then people will stop crying about shatter mesmers and start crying about bunker mesmers! HA. As if that will actually happen I can tell you right now that there are builds in other classes that may not out bunker an ele but the can certainly match it easily and not just my class (mesmers) but rangers and engis too people just haven’t tried to find them!

Why do you assume PvP oriented means there will be dueling? How familiar with GW1 are you? Because a lot of people come here thinking theres some generic template for PvP because they’ve never broken away from WoW. Its not gw1, its not WoW. If you’re upset at the pvp because theres no duel button you are in the wrong place.

You want to duel? Go into an empty server.

My favorite game lacks a vital feature common in other mmorpgs… and that’s a good thing because it makes my game unique!

That’s so horrible, it’s like saying “this is not dota2, if you want to have replays in this game then use LoLreplay!” So we have to settle with the lack of a feature and use a non optimal, temporary fix to the problem because this is not “some other game”. And you seem to be proud of that too.

It just doesn’t make any sense.

Ele bunkers could use a nerf, however, I don’t know why guardians would go overlooked if they’re just as unkillable.

As for the ele class as a whole, in the other variations of their builds, they’re fine. They take at least a little skill compared to pretty much every other profession in this game.

My current build is glass berserker’s + ruby orbs (will get divinity now that I’m doing pve again).

My favorite thing to do is aoe burst, and I don’t think any other class can aoe and burst as good as an ele.

10/30/0/15/15 or 10/25/0/15/20 as traits, I feel kinda out of place when I think of all the 0/10/0/30/30 flavor of the month players, but I honestly fail to see how they even do any damage with that build.

I like Air the most.

Though it’s pretty lackluster in staff (in terms of cool spells), it’s overall the attunement that defines most of the combos in an ele’s moveset. Without air there would be no synergy pretty much.

RtL, updraft, shocking aura, static field, blinds, AOE blinds, sweet chain lightning (I wish the missile speed was a little faster)… lots of control and SPEEEEEEEEED

The fix? Increase the points for winning a match by a flat amount, cut in half the points for capturing a node (not for neutralizing it), and award a few points for defending a capped node (even if no one is there, it could be 5 every 20 seconds).

Yeah but then you still get people like me who when they play sPvP they don’t care that much about the whole capping of the points and care a lot more about just killing things and will click “I Volunteer!” the second it pops up for auto balance so i get credit for winning whether my team loses or not…

So you’re one of those that roam around derping instead of actually trying to win matches?

I wasn’t afk. I was running to cap a point. But how will being afk increase damage?

Being afk would explain not reacting at all or seeing it coming.

Try to use your “lock-in nearest target” keybind more often.

I usually blow a stun breaker whenever they use basilisk on me (I assume he did with Steal)

The fix? Reward double the points for winning a match, cut in half the points for capturing a node (not for neutralizing it), and award a few points for defending a capped node (even if no one is there).

Mods on attacker are multiplicative, 1.05*1.05*1.1 (burning, burning, fire attun)
Mods on target are additive 1-0.33-0.1+0.01*5 (prot, guardian signet, 5 vurne)
Multiplicative to each other (1-0.33-0.1+0.01*5)(1.051.05*1.1)

More nerf mesmer QQ..

I skimmed the thread but lol’d heartily at
“No class requires the amount of counterplay as a mesmer”

We are the illusionist class, we are supposed to be tricky, but the most amount of counterplay? LoL I guess you haven’t fought a good ddele/CondiRanger or your MMR is so high you only fight mesmers like nero vitus xee and the other top tier mesmers..

Mesmer requires you to counter-play every class… you can’t just run in get melee range and start bashing your face across your keyboard like a warrior/thief..
OH IM SORRY I FORGOT THOSE CLASSES TAKE SKILL TO PLAY MY BAD

Counterplay varies, each class has to be countered in some way and there are strats to pull it off. I’m not saying that it’s impossible but you would have to be either blind, or genuinely naive, to think that the extents of counterplay that a SINGLE mesmer requires, is on par with other classes.

This entire thread is terrible and pretty much exemplifies the wretched “elite status” that some Elementalists are trying to say they have for playing this class.

I sit in just Fire all the time. It mostly has to deal with 30 points in Fire and Pyromancer’s Puissance. On average just using auto attack (1) you earn around 10 stacks of Might. With Lava Font and Arcane Wave you can stack an extra 3 due to Area Might (hence why you may stick in the melee range). Switching Attunements gives you a 9-12s cool down typically. In that time frame you will loose nearly all your might stacks. So even doing something as simple as swapping to Earth to setup a blast finisher with Eruption will just cost you damage for virtually no net gain. Also because I am not attunement swapping around like a madman I can take Renewing Stamina instead of Elemental Attunement and have permanent Vigor. Permanent Vigor means that I can dodge anything at any time to avoid any boss mechanics as needed.

The guy in question likely was trying to teach you more about Dynamic Events and how at 80 when in Orr you’re going to be mostly in Fire/Air to get tags for events and never use Water/Earth. This is to get the most amount of loot possible because Staff or Dagger primary (most common weapons) Fire/Air tags the most amount of kills for loot. Trying to do Dynamic Events in Water/Earth later on when you have 10-20 people at an event and things are dying before Ice Spike would even fall from the sky would just be an exercise in frustration.

The gear in question was likely one of two reasons. One, “Rampagers” (Prec/Pow/Cond) has the highest +Precision on all the gear for critting. Two, he likely was using Burning Precision which 30% chance to burn on crit. This way on massive Crit bounces of Chain Lightning (Air 1 on Staff) or Lightning Whip (Air 1 on Dagger) you’re spreading burning as well. Also Flame Burst is a relatively decent AOE being fairly spammable (8-10s cool down) and dealing good damage with Condition damage. Is it the most solid build? No. I’d build Pow/Prec/CritDmg as well but give the guy credit for thinking outside the box instead of working towards the cookie cutter, rubber stamped 0/10/0/30/30 build as you clearly seem to be working towards (or some slight variation of it).

All that said I do not always just sit in one attunement, but instead play the Elementalist adaptively. If things are going poorly and I need to do CC’s then I do so. I don’t just randomly switch attunements like some schizophrenic moron. However if I’m in a group and I have a Warrior or Guardian clearing conditions and everyone’s generally doing alright there’s no reason NOT to just sit there and do damage.

Finally the “lack of damage” argument is faulty on two fronts. First, you just can’t compare melee of any kind in this game to ranged. They simply won’t be on par, the game is overtuned for melee. Second, without meters there’s no way to actually tell how classes/players are doing. As a person who plays Ele/Mes/Guard/Eng the only one I’ve found better is the Guardian and Mesmer melee (which brings us back to the first point).

You can now go back to your smug superiority and patting yourselves on the back for how much “better” you are at such an “advanced” class.

I think you’re too quick to judge, this thread was just supposed to mock a guy that was trying to show off, nothing more.

Bottom line, no matter how many might stacks you may get from the pyromancer’s puissance trait, an elementalist that doesn’t actively switch attunements is a bad elementalist. Sure when fighting the trashiest mobs you can just afk autoattack with fire 1 until they die, but in pretty much any other situation, be it pve or pvp, you must switch the attunements to get the most out of your class.
