Actually I know about venoms I just found it funny that they got no buff – if you think any thieves out there use venoms you’re high (aside from basilisk of coursein pvp)

They need buffs dramatically.

This thread is just pointing out what a joke ANet thinks thieves are in which they get no real changes at all, same old crap with text updates and no real changes.

Just a heads up you’ll never get a patch worth 5g that is ridiculous in size. Most is like 30-50mb or so in my MMO experience. 5g is even bigger than an expansion I reckon.

Thief
Leeching Venoms: This trait no longer affects gadgets.
Shadow Refuge: Added a radius skill fact to this skill’s description.
Smoke Screen: This skill’s blinding pulse no longer follows the thief.
Spider Venom: The number of uses on this skill’s effect will now decrease if an attack lands or if the attack is negated by Blind, Block, Evade, Obstructed, or Invulnerable.
Devourer Venom: The number of uses on this skill’s effect will now decrease if an attack lands or if the attack is negated by Blind, Block, Evade, Obstructed, or Invulnerable.
Ice Drake Venom: The number of uses on this skill’s effect will now decrease if an attack lands or if the attack is negated by Blind, Block, Evade, Obstructed, or Invulnerable.
Skale Venom: The number of uses on this skill’s effect will now decrease if an attack lands or if the attack is negated by Blind, Block, Evade, Obstructed, or Invulnerable.

I was genuinely surprised at zero venom buffs… hrm. Seeing as how glass cannon thief with D/D and SB is the norm I figured ANet may want some viable variety in the scene but I guess not lol forgive me for being gullible?

I really do not understand why so many people here think it’s a bad thing to compare a game to WoW, or any other game for that matter. Sure, GW2 is not WoW, and of course we shouldn’t implement something just because it’s in WoW. But on the other hand, we shouldn’t not implement something just because it’s in WoW, simply for the sake of trying to be different.

I have yet to see a good argument against implementing raids. If it’s because of limited resources, incompatible coding, and all that, fine. But to say that it cheapens the experience of regular dungeons or that it simply makes the game another WoW clone doesn’t make sense at all. If you don’t like raids, then it’s very simple: treat it as yet another optional content, and don’t do it. Many people here (myself included) feel that GW2 does not have enough to do at endgame. Raids will be a great addition that have proven very popular in a lot of other MMOs. What’s wrong with suggesting something that we believe will improve an otherwise rather stale endgame?

I have yet to see one either, it seems to be the norm that WoW is evil and anything that in entails should not be in GW2 no matter if it improves the game or not. I think it would not only give us a more robust end game but drastically increase the games population.

The raiding scene is pretty huge.

Well it’s a good thing you went for warrior for your first character because they’re pretty meta right now and straight forward, you should have no problem getting used to the dodge mechanic if you build a little defensively. This would be toughness and vitality gear, you’ll figure it out once you start playing.

I think Raids could actually work for GW2.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rukia.4802

I don’t think raids would work in GW2.

I do think that 20-man instanced content may work if cleverly designed.

Having four 5-man teams have to work through puzzles to help the other teams progress would be fun. Separating them in 4 different areas where the advancement of other teams relies on the actions of the others. That could be done.

And hell, it could end with a huge boss that all 20 of you can spam at the end.

But having 20 people from beginning to end in a game without a traditional trinity? I don’t see it being challenging at all.

That’s where combo fields come in, and them being required I’m sure ANet could figure something out. Vast numbers doesn’t mean you can simply zerg a boss down if it is designed correctly with phases and multiple mechanics.

For example, in WoW sometimes there are fights where the party needs to group up as they are all taking damage from a certain boss mechanic and all healers will AoE heal as hard as they can. In GW2, this could work by an Ele throwing down a water AoE and people throwing finishers on it for regen and splash heal.

There are infinite possibilities like this, they just don’t exist in the game right now. The only downside I see is maybe Ele’s would be a requirement, but that’s on ANet for giving them the only good healing. Another way this could work is we fight alongside npcs, and they drop the circles for us to finish on them. It’s all about the combo system.

So yes, we need raids,

We need raids? Maybe you need raids, I certainly don’t. There are hundreds of raiding games, not every mmo has to have raids.

Raids are the worst part of WoW. 5-mans used to be meaningful but each expansion they have devalued them until currently they are 100% pointless to do. You can literally gear up faster for better gear doing just dailies and going afk in raid finder. I’m very happy this game does not have them.

Raids are a large group of people in an organized setting, I’m really not sure why you wouldn’t want this in GW2. So more faceroll chaotic dungeons would be better then? How about ANet letting us get at the very least 10 man grouping and have fights that require combo fields and team work (read:REQUIRE). I honestly question myself every time someone says they don’t want raids in GW2. It would only be for the better.

As everyone keeps telling me, WoW is a different game, why would raids be the same in GW2 as they are there? All I want is challenging pve content without having to grind a dungeon (fractals) 40 times over to get to that point. In WoW there are bosses you sometimes spend a month or more on because they are difficult and take tons of practice. I have not seen anything remotely close to that in GW2. And since I can’t occupy myself with a system like endless builds in GW1 there is nothing to do but grind fractals or zerg in WvW or play the same old boring conquest pvp map 24/7.

The world is dead, it needs a challenge, something people can work for, not just more rewards. It needs that experience. ANet could open raids all over tyria and you have to do a massive chain-event to open it, etc. endless possibilities. But oh no, the mere thought of raids is horrible because we can’t have any WoW in our GW now can we?

So then what do you do in any game seeing how thats the end game in every single MMO.

Actually, most other MMO’s have an achievement system that actually matters

You sure? WoW doesn’t. WAR doesn’t. LotRO doesn’t. So I guess that means you know at least 4 other MMO’s that do….

Those achievement systems DO matter. They are publicly displayed, they are social… they matter. Here? I bet many players don’t even realize there IS an achievement system.

Oh you mean titles no one cares about except the player who has them (and usually not even that person). Consider that the vast majority of achievements in WoW don’t even have any title associated with them, and the whole system is as basically pointless as it is in GW2.

Wrong and you opinion on the matter of them caring or not. There are many people who do in fact care about achievement points and titles because it shows off their prestige.

Anet does get their playerbase. If you are so enamored with another MMO, why don’t you go play that? It has all the things you are complaining about. But don’t try and ruin GW2 to make it into a clone of another game that has already been done and played to death. GW2 won’t survive copying ‘that’ game. People are tired of ‘that’ game, tired of the mechanics, the game play, all of it. Players want something different. GW2 delivers something different for those players looking for a long term, fresh new game.

I AM playing that other MMO, and yes people want to be a special snowflake why else would we want different skins and dye’s, to make our characters look good and customize our appearance. I bet you if character appearance was only client side and everyone was in ugly grey armor except themselves it would turn 90% of the playerbase off.

And I’m not the one trying to make GW2 the complete opposite of GW1, ANet is. They’re the ones making a grindfest with crap drops and one pvp mode, the hell? I would much prefer a GW1.5 so don’t think I want GW2 to become WoW, it’s obvious they are heading in that direction already from the decisions they’ve made so they may as well do it RIGHT is my point in that entire post.

So yes, we need raids, we need a working achievement system, we need all of that stuff if ANet keeps going in this direction. Otherwise, make a real Guild Wars game.

Btw if you’re so against the special snowflake fluff, tell me why I’m curious how it affects you in any way.

So then what do you do in any game seeing how thats the end game in every single MMO.

Actually, most other MMO’s have an achievement system that actually matters, GW2 has infinite resetting achievements so it doesn’t mean you really achieved anything you could just exploit the salvage one. ANet, still being clueless about what makes achievements great, are going to implement a system where you actually spend your points as currency. Lolwut? Okay… best be adding a bunch of titles then, which I’m sure they won’t. You can’t even compare achievements or inspect people.

That alone gets people out in the world in say, WoW where you can do every quest in the game which is a hell of a lot for loremaster title (IIRC). Or insane in the membrane which is imo one of the hardest titles to get, what a grind.. but you get that title to show off “the Insane”

There is nothing like that, nothing that warrants any grind having a point to it, nothing to show off that makes you stand out. No rare mounts to collect, pets are horribly designed and you have to take them out every single load and mine seemed to disappear constantly for no reason. This wasn’t a problem in GW1 because it was heavily instanced and you spent a lot of time in an area no matter where you were.

No raiding, fotm is the only ‘end-game’ content there is and it sucks, hell is there even a title for reaching the high levels of it? You don’t even get any special rewards for getting up into the 40’s, it’s honestly pathetic. Are there rare pets, anything? Ask yourself these questions.

There is nothing epic about GW2. 5 man parties are lame, even in GW1 we had 8-12 man parties. ANet makes the same exact mistakes Blizz did with D3. Made the party size smaller and the game nothing but a boring grind, taking nothing what made D2 that special favorite of many. They literally scrapped everything from GW1. I don’t even see a hint of lore honestly, except for that one part where trahearne talks about the Guild Wars extremely briefly around level 50 I think it is?

Now let’s talk about raids. 10 or 25 man parties are epic, taking out huge bosses with concentrated team synergy. (inb4 people who have never even played another MMO talk about how ez the trinity is and how they hate it) Raids contain not only epic boss fights but lore, gear, recipes, gold, achievements, tons of team work, an alchemist laying down a cauldron of flasks for your party to buff themselves etc. Comedy relief, I still remember the ‘elevator boss’ as we called it in BWD. I can’t count how many times people missed the elevator and fell to their deaths, and I do believe there was actually a counter in your character stat’s that showed how many times you died to the elevator boss.

Raids aren’t just fights, they are an experience with rewards not only in loot but the experience itself. I don’t remember anything of note that is worthy of posting in this thread about GW2 dungeons except for the mysteries titan guy that thanks you for saving him in fractals and teleports away. That was cool.

Such a huge world with nothing in it imo. I really don’t think ANet gets it when it comes to full fledged MMO’s, and they need to wake up and take notes from the big dogs that DO. Don’t even get me started on the boring trinity and combat.

Mistaking Issues: Combat for Specialization

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rukia.4802

In Guild Wars 1 for example there were over a thousand skills, all with very different effects, and due to the secondary profession model used there were lots of combinations. Weapons had some impact on skill usage and skill combinations, but it was very little.

This is very short-sightened. GW1 had over one thousand skill, most of which were underpowered so they could not make the game too imbalanced. The result was that normal PvE was dumbed down so someone could play while AFK (just send a team or heroes with henchmen and they could do anything in normal mode for you), while Hard Mode was dominated by a few favourite builds that were obviously better than everything else.

There is a very simple argument against adding more skills to GW2: do you think the current skills are really balanced? If ArenaNet can’t balance even the few skills we currently have, do you really believe adding even more skills would make anything better?

Players can fall for the illusion that “more is always better”. After GW1, I hope ArenaNet has learned their lesson and now knows better than that.

There were meta builds of course but the fact still remains variety was a billion times better and that’s what the players want. Variety. In GW2 we have like 2 builds per character, yipee!

Also, builds that showed up to defeat the meta happened incredibly frequently. People theorycraft and set up builds 24/7 in GW1 to try and make that next meta. That’s what was fun, or even if you didn’t care about the meta you could still play any build you wanted even if it WAS crap because it wasn’t a particularly hard pve game except in dungeons. Pretty much the same as GW2.

It’s like how WoW players try to get their top DPS by using math charts and such, we tried to get the best builds and there were endless combinations, both in pve and pvp. Even today new meta’s appear even though the game is ‘dead’ and most people just /resign in GvG when facing a decent guild, and I can’t remember the last time I saw a full party of 8 with no henchies in the last 4 or 5 months.

I’m just saying, this game has zero longevity because the lack of variety is holding the whole game down. Tell me in a year if you still enjoy spamming your autoattack and hundred blades, seriously let me know.. I’ll be here, still waiting for ANet to give GW1 more of a dev team.

If you’re playing the game like Anet wants you to be doing i.e. Moving on to new content after completing 1, instead of farming 1 event or 1 dungeon path for hours on end, there should be no problem at all.

Nice in theory, but definitely not what’s happening.

Everyone is in fractals, ANet clearly doesn’t want us out in between events, if Orr farms weren’t nerfed into oblivion and DR set in so fast maybe we would be but this is fractal wars now.

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. It’s generally used to stop piracy, not bots. The counter measures used by the dev team make it harder to bot. The reports that people give make it harder to bot. Believe it or not there has been a drastic decrease in bots, and I believe it’s because of the dev teams efforts in this regard. If I must suffer through a few months of a few side effects that don’t break the game for me in order to have a stable game down the road, I am more than happy to.

Funny you mention that… DRM does the same thing for legitimate users vs pirates that DR does for legitimate users vs bots.

I agree, DR should be removed. Especially now that we no longer see the Ranger trains as much.

It’s already been stated in here but DR was never meant for bots, any regular joe could see DR would never work against programmers who will simply create their bots around DR just like people did back in Diablo 2 with realm down.

I knew this from the start, it’s ANets version of raid lock, a “you can stop playing now.” mechanic. I much prefer the GW1 system where it told me to please take a break every hour for health reasons… now they pretty much force you to, even if you are healthy and just want to have a heavy gaming session.

It’s very nazi imo. Really bothers me that people are ok with this… I should not get reduced rewards because I play longer or farm a certain area for long periods of time. It’s a freaking MMO, farming is inevitable. How do they not understand this?

Now before someone tells me hurr DR was in GW1, it wasn’t even noticeable unless you were repeating the same boss for hours for elite tomes or whatever. Plus moving on from an area immediately stopped it, or that’s what it seemed like because I never got reduced drops there. I actually don’t think I ever hit DR. It truly only affected bots afaik.

Never even heard of someone complaining about it, not on the guru forums or in-game.

It all makes a ton of sense now…

You know the scary part is those comments are right on target, if ANet of all companies could give in to this crap then how can we trust any gaming company nowadays? Back before GW2 was released if you asked if ANet was trust worthy I’d say yeah, more than any other out there for sure.

Now I can never be sure what to believe. It’s pretty much fact that eventually all great gaming companies live long enough to turn evil and betray the fan base though. At this point I’m used to it but not MMO’s, not once in 7 years did I question ANets moves in a negative manner except when they removed TA and replaced it with the most horrible arena I’ve ever had the displeasure of playing.

If you ask me, in the past few years they have fired anyone who were major decision makers in GW1 and just replaced them with a bunch of money grubbing nexon employee’s or generally clueless dolts. Everything they have done recently has been extremely questionable and quite insulting to what they built on so long ago.

My thoughts are yours, I was following GW2 since they scrapped Utopia in GW1, I wanted to play a time mage so bad. Seriously. Anyway, not much I can add but reiterate on the pvp topic. We need more modes, conquest sucks and e-sports won’t even matter if your game is boring, for real. Get on the new modes. GvG/HA is a MUST.

Even FA/JQ were a billion times more enjoyable than any conquest match I have had. The only enjoyable pvp experience I can get out of this game is WvW and I can’t even play that because ANet refuses to optimize the game around nvidia cards.

Basically pvp is dead and it will remain dead until they add a decent mode. Good luck with custom arena’s, that will net you a little extra cash from people that want to set their own rule book but it won’t be very popular trust me. It will get stale after a week when people realize oh we’re still stuck with the same crappy conquest.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rukia.4802

Such a blatant lack of understanding of this game’s mechanics does not give much credibility to this thread.

It’s even more sad coming from a GW1 player where each class used to use maximum 20 skills in Vanilla, where attributes had no influence at all on the gameplay, and where you could not swap skills on the fly. On a single Fractal run I may use up to 30 different skills with my Mesmer, depending on the ennemies, my group needs, and the situation.

This game’s mechanics are much, much deeper than GW1, so complex in fact that it’s hard to really understand them all.

Why are you comparing vanilla GW1 to GW2 when this was their second MMO and they had 5 years to develop and flesh out the combat, this game is years behind GW1 today.

Yeah, GW had its problems but they released templates and attributes did affect combat not sure where you get that idea that they didn’t. They just costed money at first and were made free to change after a bit.

My point is, GW2 shouldn’t be so brain dead as the OP points out when they should have learned from their GW1 mistakes.

Oh and 20 skills? Yeah, you’re wayyyyyyy off. You MUST be talking about pre-searing, which was only a very very very tiny part of vanilla GW.

It seems ANet is going about adding new pvp modes the same way Blizzard did with updated character models, both seem to think neither should be top priority when in reality they very much are. Sad that ANet only wants conquest in the game. This game is YEARS behind GW1 yet it’s newer? All of my what.

All GW fans wanted from the beginning was GvG and they won’t even give us that.

Which class is in dire need of revision?

Thief needs rebalancing due to their 1shot burst damage. Ele needs more builds, was happy when I read that they might consider allowing Ele using greatsword. Engineer needs more builds too. Guardian need more unique skills not some same skill with different animation.

Could you provide a source on the Ele Greatsword? I would main a GS Ele in a heartbeat.

Afaik all ANet said was we may see added weapons for professions in the future, Ele GS was just used as an example.. but then again I only read the manuscript not watched the video.

And on topic I strongly believe thief is horribly designed and needs to be completely redone in the image of the Assassin from GW which uses combo’s with lead, off and dual attacks but I know that’ll never happen so.

I agree, got my last legendary in WoW in 1/10th of the time, and it had a epic story the whole way too. I think they really missed the point on legendaries and assume they are simply meant to be one huge boring grind.

The problem is so much RNG, and ANets obsession with the mystic toilet.

Will existing achievements get converted?

The initial version will only be for daily/monthly achievements (this will not be retroactively rewarded.) Later you’ll see a system in place that rewards more expanded achievements points which will retroactively reward all achievements already earned, yes.

However, there are some achievements which are infinitely repeatable currently. It is highly likely so this new system isn’t broken we’ll need to cap those and people who have made insane progress down one of those lines will lose some of their progress to get back to the cap. I wouldn’t recommend anyone go bonkers trying to progress an infinitely repeatable achievement category in anticipation of the release of this system, as you will likely lose some points/progress if you take it to an extreme number.

We’re still working out the details on the system, so that’s about as far into detail as I can go currently.

Wait wait wait, you’re actually going to fix achievements? Holy crap.

What is with all the questions on the first page about getting banned? No, you aren’t going to be banned for using the pick to do it’s job.

That’s like saying no you won’t get banned for salvaging certain crafted items. Who knows because ANet is freaking ban-happy towards anything that makes players gold.

He’s just trying to be thorough, and I’ve heard of people doing this for a long time now but personally? I wouldn’t.

And no one is complaining about warriors with their insane AoE burst with way more HP? Lul. Thieves are nothing, in fact a BS thief would probably be one of the slowest ones.

I dunno about D3 cuz it was crap and I only saw the paragon system as a huge added grind, but D2 also did MF well and you didn’t need to sacrifice a lot of gear to have a ton of it (300-400%) in fact even in full MF gear you would not be hindering your party, assuming you had a decent set.

I’m really not sure how the current version of MF even got into the game, it’s horrible and should not replace a main stat… who thought this was a good idea?

Also Sorry the translator isn’t working 100 percent, we don’t understand what your asking.

I can understand him fine, not sure what part confused you, oh that’s right you’re just trolling.

OP, all valid points, long story short this is a pure DPS game… it’s never going to change, unfortunately.

Warrior by far, this is from personal experience. It is simply THE best and you can facetank anything with knights and still get near 100% crit rating with some MF and healing power. I can’t do this on any of my other proffs.. not at all.

The general ease of the class is just too good to pass up, they excel in every aspect of the game.

GW2 and trinity: healthy discussion

It sounds great on paper, it works better in practice if you actually do it. Anyone with a clue regarding GW2 combat is fully aware that this is much more than a “pure DPS” game. You’re allowed your opinions regardless of how wrong they are, but you’re not allowed your own facts. The examples I gave, however, only scratch the surface of the capabilities each player has with their chosen profession, the weapons they choose, the traits they select, the utilities they choose, etc.

The examples you gave simply show that generally it is DPS + some support / CC / utlility tacked on.

So what you end up is with a far less varied style of play than you get in a game with healers or that comlpex support classes give, a healer is a far more signifcant change in style from a DPS than anything you get in GW2, which is more like a glorified ARPG.

Furthermore there is nothing in this game that requries the level of multitasking or awareness that I needed to heal / CC / debuff / DPS / cleanse , etc on my Chlorodom in Rift when I PvPed (whilst being constantly focus fired) or to offheal/CC/keep up stun immunity/cleanse/manage pet/debuff/DPS on Loremaster in LOTRO when I raided. About the only things the classes are step up from in terms of awareness/multitasking are simple DPS or simple tanks from other games, for some classes / builds (p/d thief for instance) not even that.

Exactly my point, thank you

All sounds great on paper, but combat is boring in game, cool story though. And I stand by the fact that this is a pure DPS game. Cool, you can remove conditions and cripple foes. I can do that in any trinity game. I can even heal my self in WoW on my rogue more than I can in GW2.

Sorry but GW2 is not progressing forward in any sort of trinity.

Sorry but GW2 is not progressing forward in any sort of trinity. Good news… they’re not trying to progress forward in any sort of trinity. They’ve progressed forwards by leaving an archaic system behind.

All that and you think GW2 has no trinity. Lol okay not going to argue with a troll anyway. Ever heard of DPS/Support/CC, by chance?

You are literally forced to DPS on any character btw, and I’m not talking utilities, I’m talking core mechanics of every profession. DPS, DPS, and more DPS.

I agree on most parts but:

Hearts are actually worse than quests imo, dynamic events are good though. I much more enjoy questing (hearts) in GW1/WoW.

I’m interested in why you think this. I can see no possible reason that anyone would think Hearts are worse than WoW quests.

Cheers.

Because in WoW I can actually accept and turn in a quest collecting rewards ranging from weapons, armor, gold, and reputation that gets me access to unique pets, mounts, and gear. I don’t like the karma system in GW2, and the hearts just magically showing up and getting completed without so much of a turn in takes away from the experience for me.

I like conventional quests and events, but hearts are just a dumbed down version of conventional quests. Oh sure, I can ‘choose’ to either fix some traps or kill mobs but honestly I just go for the fastest route on any heart to get completed because they all have crappy rewards and are boring. The ‘choices’ it gives you aren’t anything revolutionary lol.

Every WoW quest opens up with a story and a reason why you are doing what you are doing.

Thanks for the explanation. I agree that the loot system for WoW quests is better, but as to the other stuff you mention, each to their own. I was never interested in ‘why’ I was doing a quest in WoW.

Cheers.

Well if you don’t ask why, it’s just a mindless grind isn’t it? I always read the quest text… it really adds to the experience and you’d be surprised how much detail Blizz puts into them. But I guess a lot of people just ignore them, because screw reading lol
