1) Join a good guild – ask their advice on builds.
2)Get your toon equipped with exotics. At some time get Ascended jewellery. Buy Amulet with laurels, accessories from guild commendations, rings from fractals.
3)Try out sPvP – some like it a lot.
4) Have a go at WvW – you will more than likely die here but it can be fun.
5) Start the HoT storyline. This will open up the Berzerker stuff, gliding and a whole lot more.
6) Don’t forget Fractals, Dungeons and the Raid.
7) Exotics not good enough? Consider Ascended armor/weapons. Much more expensive and not that much better. Only really needed for the Raid and higher fractals.
8)Your account has more than one character slot. Try the other classes? You might like one better. Each class in GW2 plays differently so you may find you prefer different ones for doing different things.

The problem is the simple economics damage that changing all picks to produce sprockets would cause. Sprockets would be worth one copper each. That would extend itself to things people made make with sprockets too.

And yes, I did buy the right pick. I haven’t bought any permanent axes or sickles though. I only bought the pick because it was such an obviously good option.

You do not want all weapons to have incentives. This creates the already inherent favoritism you see now. Honestly the opposite is best; remove incentives for using specific weapons and instead offload them to choosing specific builds.

Problem is each specific weapon has specific skills which are usually biased either towards direct damage or condi.

Sometimes traiting for a specific weapon will mean a less than optimal build overall.

I would like to see what would happen if traits altered the skills on weapons? Unfortunately that would probably require a bit too much work.

Schematics and Aetherium

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serious.7083

When HoT was produced they made changes to reduce the effectiveness of large guilds, one of those was Aetherium production. This would simply continue that.

A really large guild could dominate a WvW fight with stuff bought via gold. That is one option but not necessarily the best if what you are after is ‘some good fights’. For many guilds Aetherium is now completely worthless, this change would give it value again.

It would restrict large guilds, but that is a potential restriction. It depends on pricing, it may be that a large guild can build as much as it used to but spend Aetherium rather than as much gold and mats.

If a medium guild is willing to put a higher amount of gold per member in they can produce at least as much. There are also guilds with members who have a lot of real life money and are willing to back their guilds with it.

They don’t. Really if a thief hits a ranger there is normally only going to be one victor. Thief can go repeatedly invisible and all they need is one good critical hit.

That excludes Druid and Daredevil. Again, the Daredevil has a lot of damage, enough to take down a Druid despite the healing.

It also excludes condi.

I can’t support this… You want to make legendaries, learn to play different game types… perfectly fine with that considering how royally obsolete as a currency Badges of Honor are.

I have something in excess of 30,000 Badges of Honor, all of them from WvW. Changes like this are something I might expect of a dodgy finance company in their terms and conditions. Badges of Honor are not ‘obsolete’ they have been devalued by being used as an EotM currency.

The other side of this is that people who want the Gift of Battle for making a legendary now AFK farm the track. That does not make a good situation.

So, people, if you can’t get in to WvW at peak times cause the border is full of people AFK farming for their legendaries you only have anet to blame.

And even if they don’t AFK farm they will still be WvW Newbies. Who’s guild wants to play wet nurse?

You would still have to waypoint to rez. People often jump over the sides of bridges/off cliffs to avoid being stomped so this shouldn’t be an issue. For the victor it would mean no option to ‘finish’ someone, but you would gain in not having to, it can be difficult at times and sometimes they might rally.

TBH the only reason I see to have finishing is so anet can sell lots of finishers through the TP.

In certain instances though in sPvP there is a tactic where you want to keep an enemy down but not actually kill them. Simply put it stops them respawning and coming back to fight.

I started it with 3 other guildies. Within a few days one decided they didn’t want to make Nevermore and chose another legendary. Two of us have completed it. I then gifted a lot of mats to the last one, they have their precursor.

Guild Halls need more

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

They removed the crafting stations from WvW because some complained that a few people from PvE spent some time crafting during peak time when the border was full and had people waiting. You might read that as WvW guilds couldn’t go raiding because one or two of their people couldn’t get on the map.

They could have moved the crafting stations to the sPvP area and made it more open to other people. Most of the time people just stand around in there waiting to get into their next match so they could be doing some crafting. I often use storage/bank/merchant there rather than cross most of a map.

I would certainly like there to be other crafting stations than just the scribing one in the Guild hall. There are suitable areas in the empty buildings around the northern waypoint in Lost Precipice.

The ‘arena’ area is just too small to be useful. Anet, thinking that you can guild PvP on a postage stamp, it just isn’t going to work.

Right at the beginning we were promised, amongst other things, a pub brawl minigame. They might get around to putting this in, Guild Hall would be a good location.

At the same time the number of map changes when people enter or leave could be reduced. It seems that every couple of people going in requires a new map to be made.

In the game there’s swords, 2h-swords, maces, 2h-maces (hammers), axes, and no 2h-axes. It makes sense to ask yourself why one is missing from the pattern. Also, the original iconic art for the warrior profession ( https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/) pictures the warrior with a 2h axe.

It could be a very large one handed axe…

Unfortunately two handed axes are often just skins attached to hammers. In real life warfare they were often used in the same way as hammers.

Serious.7083

A few years back I spent some time in another game, with a location known as The Mines of Moria. This was another multi layered location but with an even worse map than HoT. People would rather pay than go in there. Many vowed never to return once they got out the other side. I learned how the area worked (it wasn’t the same as the map showed) and eventually could go anywhere with relative ease.

The HoT areas, to me, are fine. The map, although better than it was, is still inadequate.

I have made Nevermore, which required me to map out all of the zones in HoT. A lot of this was achieved simply by not trying to get anywhere specific but just going in random directions that looked promising. The rest was looking for external maps and guidance on how to get there, one or two places are quite difficult.

The first two areas, and Dragon Stand, are mostly fairly easy once you get the idea. If you want to map them fully it can be a pain getting the last few locations. Tangled Depths is the one where they put in that extra effort, and it shows. Really, if you want to map for a precursor, look for a group or guild that does it.

Then there were people in GW1 who could barely navigate a map there on a good day, I just wonder how badly they suffered in the HoT jungle.

Similarly it might not actually disappear, just have the shaft shrink a lot.

Schematics and Aetherium

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serious.7083

Just an idea, many guilds have completed their guild hall’s expansion possibilities, or as close to as they want.

For this I would include guild banners and similar consumable items produced by scribing in Schematics.

Aetherium is still being produced in large quantities and wasted, because of lack of use.

It would be interesting to suitably reduce the other ingredients and include Aetherium instead of them. As Aetherium production is limited guilds would have to choose to do upgrades if they still needed them or produce schematics? Later the production of guild items would still be restricted by the maximum Aetherium production.

This would restrict larger guilds more than small to medium guilds.

You can effectively instantly move your pet to yourself just by switching to the alternative pet. This will give a nice boost if traited. The problem with adding new commands to the status bar is that Rangers already have 5 commands activated by the F keys.

As for stealth detection, yes, it would be nice, but I would prefer that they had a generic trait line too, one that any profession could use to include this.

As said in previous threads the Engineer already has decent invisibility detection. The ranger pet utility skill still stinks and needs upgrading.

Something like ‘your pet detects and reveals all nearby invisible for 20 seconds, making them slow, weak and vulnerable.’ Oh and make it a signet too. Active ‘for 30 seconds your pet transforms into a Bioluminescent Lurcher, attacking all foes in the vicinity.’

Now that would be a worthwhile skill to take

Unfortunately I have zero percent chance of them actually putting it in ;_;

Big shock: Anet are working on other games, they have already said that. They might even have started the development of GW3 – who knows? Even if that is so the development would take several years, meaning something like a 2020 release date might be possible, if they really, really pushed development. It is still unlikely as they are still working on GW2 updates, patches and releases.

Problem, in order to take on games like WoW there needs to be a large amount of content in a game, we haven’t got anywhere near that in GW2 and not even if you included all of GW1 in the mix would you be near.

Serious.7083

You can avoid the NPCs at the forge by using it from the north side. You can avoid the NPCs at the back in LA by using the one on the east side.

Not the point, they aren’t needed for anything. They have one function, greet, which is not useful, just irritating. I’m sure the devs had a really good reason but it just detracts from the game. It would be better to set them to ignore any contact or move their path/position so they no longer go near the traders/bank/etc.

For that matter there is the issue of people dropping portable merchants, bankers and similar items at the same places. this can be by accident or just someone trolling others. Would be good if you couldn’t drop a fun chest on top of the banker.

I’ve previously suggested on multiple occasions that I thought it would be good if they detached the skins from the gathering tools.

The could sell basic unlimited gathering tools on the gem store for 500 gems and sell the various animation skins for 500 gems. .

That might mean people buy only the tools for 500 gems unless you had a requirement for them to use a skin for it to work. An alternative would be a tool that costs 800 gems and skins that cost 200 gems each. These skins could be put in the wardrobe and use trans charges to alter them.

E-Specs: A Dangerous and Barren Future

Serious.7083

It has been stated countless times. This game has no trinity and what you are suggesting is exactly that.

When GW2 started it did indeed have no trinity, except things have changed. The last raid I was in did have a tank, a guardian. It had an elementalist healer, and it had a lot of DPS.

The ranger has an issue in that it lacks ability when doing small group and 1v1. That makes it rather less likely to be selected for sPvP. The pet does help a lot in PvE, but elsewhere people have learned to avoid it and hit the ranger.

When they were designing the first Raid wing it was decided to give Rangers a lot of healing potential. They are indeed replacement monks in that respect. It works well enough in the limited scope of raids but in WvW it gives very little advantage unless you have a large number of people.

The problem is that a group of tanky people using condition damage with a healer can take a huge amount of damage without dying, it can be impossible to kill such a group with a similar number of players. By putting ‘monks’ back in the game for raids they have unbalanced the game elsewhere.

I realised fairly early that GW: Prophecies had it’s limitations. Previously I had averaged less than 3 months playing any game, then this one. It certainly wasn’t the game as such but the people you met playing it that made it great – which includes someone with a frog in tow.

There were bits of the game that could have been better, but it still has something and every so often calls me back for ‘just one more go’.

I also repeatedly did the starter area, and ended up doing many runs with Arya The Pre Farmer. I ended up with no less than 3 accounts, each had pre-searing farmers on them. There were also specific slots for carrying stuff to post searing.

Please explain auto-target logic

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serious.7083

Who said GW2 was logical?

Tab certainly can be set to nearest enemy, mine is set that way. Tab is normally used to cycle between enemies, which can take some time but a lot of players prefer that option.

The issue here is if you use a skill that requires a target but you don’t have one the system analyses the present state of play, decides which mob you least want to aggro, and selects that one. It seems to ignore distance, angle, already aggroed enemies and any other criteria you might think useful. You can have a dozen mobs trying to kill you and it will still select the only veteran within range you haven’t managed to hit yet.

There is an option to switch it off, which is worth doing.

There are some recurring events like Easter, Winter’s Day, Halloween and Chinese New Year festival that recur every year. It would be nice for several other such events to take place at other times, such as summer. Perhaps as many as 12 monthly events that cycle, although that would require a lower level for when major events are released.

The return of events like the dragon festival, Queen’s Gauntlet or The Bazaar of the Four Winds would certainly be welcome if there is dev time to do it. It would definitely make it at least appear that there is something going on rather than just repeatedly farming.

All Ascended jewellery is available very cheaply if you have a guild.

So, Someone has 92k Gold?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

The easiest way to get rich in GW2 is to never spend any gold. After playing 10k hours you will easily have 100k raw gold on your hands that way.
With trading those 100k gold could easily be 500k gold.

And have 30 accounts feeding you about 1500 gold/28 days (or about 19k gold a year) for logging in.

I excluded options like convertig gems to gold or extra accounts since that obviously skews the results. I think it costs less than 10k USD to buy 100k gold with gems to gold option at the moment which is a pocket change for plenty of people. If you have disposable income and value your time trading gems for gold is obviously the best way to get gold. Farming gold yourself means you value your time at only like 1 USD per hour.

Having a easy income of 1500 gold or so a month also means it’s easy to say things like, “don’t spend gold and you’ll be rich.” Easy to say but not really useful to tell people to not spend gold in a cosmetics based game.

I think it costs less than 10k USD to buy 100k gold with gems to gold option at the moment which is a pocket change for plenty of people

I’m not surprised at all that you think 10k USD is pocket change.

I feel bad for anyone who can just kitten away $10k and can’t think of anything better to do with it than buy currency in some online game.

Some bankers, sports personalities, entertainers and businessmen will pay $10,000 plus on a ‘good night out’. ‘Investing’ that sort of money in a game would be relatively cheap for them.

Guild Wars isn’t dead by any measure.

PvE is doing very well, as is sPvP.

If they fix the issues with WvW and stop mistaking it for PvE then they have a good chance a large number of large scale PvPers will return.

WvW was always going to have issues, the way it was implemented ensured that. In an ideal world there needs to be 2 different large scale PvP game installations, one for PPT/WvW people, one for GvG people. While the present WvW maps are suitable for PPT they aren’t really designed for GvG.

If they can somehow get a suitable solution for that then the future looks good for Arenanet.

Regarding Guardian

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

The Guardian is one of the best tanks in the game if you are going PvE. Mace/shield should do you very well. Problem is there is very little call for tanks except in Raids. Most people don’t go guard tank, they do zerker or more rarely condi.

It can also do a lot of good damage with a hammer or greatsword for group work, especially when combined with Dragonhunter traps and bow.

Take a staff too, useful for when in a large group and you need to tag everything rather than do damage.

Mostly my Guard is used in dungeons, fractals and raids.

I use a condi warrior for farming Orr, it is very unlikely to die at all.

Ranger is very easy in the HoT areas. Engineer can be fun with all the kits but not so hot in PvE without them.

Mesmers while powerful in WvW and sPvP aren’t quite as good early on in PvE They lack AoE damage skills. That makes them a bit more challenging and are likely to get less reward in large groups doing PvE events

We are not frightened of Raids, most just are not interested in anything that requires that extreme level of play.

A lot of the rest are being realistic, they aren’t good enough. I have multiple joint arthritis and fibromyalgia, every week my guild puts at least one or two group into raids. Often I am pulled in because I am available, I am in no way a ‘mouse/keyboard jockey’. So far they have never got past Gorseval.

Do you think Raids in GW2 were a bad idea?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

Overall yes, they were a bad idea. Not the introduction of raiding but the implementation, it is too much of a step up from present. They may improve play for a few but the average player has no interest in raiding. A lot of people try it, find it’s impossible for them and then stop.

As such, to keep a few people happy there are much better options. Those people could have been used to supply a hard mode for dungeons, which would have filled the same role without taking up huge areas of the open world map.

The rewards are in themselves divisive, and, as far as ‘Legendary armor’ goes worth very little, in theory at least.

Despite the fact the entrance is plainly visible they are not easily accessible and cause a disproportionate amount of bad feelings.

The Desert Borderland is certainly pleasing to the eye, the problem is it was designed by PvE orientated people rather than PvP ones. If anything they tried too hard, putting in unnecessary features.

They are also a bit too complex and lack obvious routes to get around. The increase in fighting area and changes to waypoint use increased the issue. If I die at the south end of my home map I don’t want to have to run for a couple of minutes to get back.

The HoT Guild ‘improvements’ for WvW were badly thought out and implemented. You cannot earn them in WvW, they are expensive and still overpowerful.

BUT I am! >:D

Flapping your arms will only work at great height and then for a maximum of 3 seconds, after which the character will fall to it’s death.

Rangers pets will automatically attack invisible foes within reach. Anyone hit by a ranger pet skill will become revealed, invulnerable and lose all conditions. They will also drop all their armor and equipment. If they don’t pick it up within 20 seconds it will become available for anyone else.

Warriors while 100 blades will hit 100 times each hit will also cause the foe to gain 10 stacks of retribution at 200% damage for each stack back onto the warrior.

Elementalists, when attuning to fire their pants will ignite and the character will run for the nearest source of water. They will be blocked from attuning to water.

Engineers can now claim enemy siege, making it usable by allies

Necromancer minions will not survive the death of their master and gain 20,000% damage against previous allies.

Invisible characters who are revealed will lose their leggings and perform the surprise emote

Dragonhunters can only damage dragons, not other foes.

Mesmers may now teleport anywhere but will be DOA and unable to rez except by going to a waypoint.

Too kitten late, they effectively did that already with Mentor tags. These are regularly used in PvE in place of a commander tag and guess what? They are effectively free. OK, they don’t have all the nifty bits but they could have. Really the only big one is color options.

The other side of this is some professions are at a large disadvantage without elite specializations and it takes a long time to earn them this way. The points are also combined so it is possible to accidentally earn them on a wrong character.

On the old map I managed to 3 man all 3 keeps at different points. Unless they are protected you can do the same to the new DBL keeps.

One option to prevent this might be needing a minimum number of enemies near the lord or it goes invulnerable. That would reduce the effect of havoc groups and their game play to some extent.

I doubt if that option would be popular with everyone.

Otherwise I agree with Dusty on this, remove negative guild and borderland effects and replace with something less drastic. Increase mobility while simplifying routes.

Problem starts with there being two radically different groups of people mixed in the same area.

PPK/GvG people don’t want to defend locations like keeps and towers, they just want to generally ‘have good fights’ and preferably beat the enemy into the ground. Often you will find guild groups just running around ignoring any call to defend or help capture anything. Most have no real interest in points or scoring or WvW in it’s present form.

PPT people take over keeps and towers then place siege, their aim is to keep the enemy out and keep the points rolling in. They will immediately go to a tower that’s under attack and defend it. WvW was seemingly designed for PPT people.

Each group has issues with the other’s mode of play, you will not find a simple option that allows both groups to always play harmoniously together.

What is needed is another large scale PvP game mode that is purely for GvG/PPK people. WvW is not really suitable for them and a different option would be preferred.

A reduction to 100 gold would be fine if the badges needed were increased proportionately.

The other issue is that quite a few commanders won’t tag up because of people criticizing and dissing them. I understand why people do this, some commanders are not very effective. That is because they aren’t trained properly. For this same reason plenty of people buy the commander tag but won’t tag up because they lack experience or are frightened of bad feedback.

Would be nice if there was somewhere giving instructions on how to command in WvW.

I think anet didn’t think enough here. A lot of the big tacticals were produced from pure hype. If they had thought more then perhaps they would have also asked not only ‘can we put this in?’ but also ‘should we put this in?’ Basics is you have an idea, you test it, then you decide if it should actually be included.

Things like airship defense and banners are far too powerful. They may be expensive but that simply puts them out of smaller guilds/servers range. Effectively they amount to a massive buff for top servers and give nothing to lower/weaker ones.

The auras need to be reduced too. They presently give a 100 buff to defenders, 50 or even 30 would be better.

Another vote for fixing the borderlands, with better movement and less PvE stuff they would be fine.

While the keeps are impressive air and fire could be simplified quite a bit.

It would take as much or more effort to go back to the old borderlands as keep the new and update it. Anet have said the plan is to update the DBL to improve movement and combat. Later on they hope to be able to finally get the rotation sorted and produce new borderlands maps.
