This is nothing different than to other MMO’s I have played and heard about.
Here is two of them:
WoW – I remember some friends of mine complained about a new class in there (Death Knight or something) where totaly OP at release.
LoTRO – Runekeepers and Wardens was way OP at release of the Expac and almost ruined PvP for a whole year.

You can add ESO to that list, characters could meet a vampire and be bitten, making them vampires too. The vampire equivalent of the necro life steal skills could drain a zerg dry – you couldn’t do enough damage to kill it. That meant the only option being try to escape, if you were still alive.

Not the point though, this isn’t WoW, or LotRO. This is Guild Wars 2 and the Devs should be thinking more before they change anything. So far they have tried several ‘improvements’ which turned out to be complete failures.

Things are imposed on us rather than them asking or even having development areas in game for it. Because of that any failures are entirely the fault of the development team.

Why no mainhand for War, Mes?

Serious.7083

Are you leaving out ele on purpose? We got the least diversity when it comes to weapons. Imo I think that is due to lazyiness/not having enough time, though. I think warrior is fine with an offhand, but mesmer should have probs gotten a MH.

If you exclude the fact you get 4 atunements. Including them meaning 20 skills on a staff or combo. The warhorn gives you 8 extra skills, not 2.

Worst diversity is Engineer, rifle, pistol, shield, harpoon gun but only if you exclude the weapon kits.

The only thing I would change is give the second pair of weapon slots to Ele and Engi so they can have another weapon set equipped but disable the switch while in combat. That would make it easier to switch weapon sets to a more suitable one rather than having to rummage through your bags looking for your daggers cause staff isn’t as useful in the combat you are going to face.

HoT available in Gem store?

Serious.7083

I am aware that the gems will have to be bought in order to be traded for gold. That doesn’t really change my point though.

Player X buy a bunch of gems and trade them for gold. Player X have now spent real money on said gems.

Player Y decides to get gems with the gold he/she/it earned in-game. Player Y now have Z amount of gems without spending a single $ on it.

Player Y can now buy the expansion the the gem store without paying any real money, ergo get it for free.

Player X worked maybe 5 hours to earn 50 bucks to buy Hot? Player Y may have put in 20 or more hours to get the gold to do the same.

Time is money so your thinking is wrong. That is how some people can justify buying gems with real money to trade for gold and then buy on the TP.

Yay! Raids needs to be more difficult.

The first boss resists direct damage almost entirely, zerker gear produces 1-2 hit points of damage so you need condi to start.

That might promote in the option of using Celestial gear or carrying 2 sets of armor such as zerker combined with sinister or zerker and rabid.

When people start sorting out new sets of Legendary armor this issue will vanish, it will take a minute or two to change stats at most.

While we don’t know how to combat the new builds yet those using them are not used to doing so at present. That levels the field a little.

To be very honest I have been facing these in WvW, they are more powerful than the old builds there. Unfortunately there looks like there will be no way that people can get these new toys without paying.

YB doesn’t seem strong enough to face against the T1 worlds.

If they are not strong enough then SoS and FA are even less capable of winning such a battle.

As has been pointed out T1 need to bleed people down to lower tiers, not Glicko. They will just gain that back again. The question is how do you make it worthwhile for players moving to lower servers?

WvW isn't PvE

in WvW

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

So why are we using PvE armor and stats?

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to use PvE amulets and equipment? This would make the area of WvW more balanced. New players wouldn’t have the issue of having to use lower stat armor and weapons. Using low level green or blue weapons means damage can be much reduced against a full level 80. This is a severe limitation on uplevelled characters and the primary reason their owners are told to use a level 80.

It is even worse when the player is inexperienced or even completely new to WvW.

Someone who has just got their first character to level 80 is going to find it hard to source exotics, Ascended armor and weapons are going to be far out of their price range. This change would specifically help new players with less available gold to spend.

As PvP skills are balanced for people fighting people this would be a much better option than the PvE ones we are using in WvW at the moment, which tend to unbalance the classes.

It would also simplify balancing, WvW would automatically be balanced at the same time as PvP while PvE could be more easily and suitably balanced on it’s own. At the moment WvW suffers because balancing has to include PvE.

There is the problem of changing stats anywhere on the map. People would therefore have to return to a designated area in spawn to change amulets and other equipment. This is a little more limited than present, at the moment you can change armor, weapons and jewellery anywhere on the map while out of combat – providing you have spares.

Having played ESO there are a few issues. Yes, it has a large WvW equivalent map, but the skills last time I was on were highly imbalanced. There was also a number of bugs that needed fixing. Then the interface is taken directly from the previous single player game with a few additions such as in game mail, chat and grouping. That makes it more difficult to play and harder to recommend.

Lord of the Rings Online also has a PvP area similar to WvW. Problem is you actually have to level your character there and there can be some ganking issues.

Aeon also has large areas where group PvP is an option. It plays very well but the ganking killed it off for me. It has the bonus of being able to do combat while flying. The issue here is it comes down to who has more healing/flying potions on them.

I actually feel sorry for FA and SoS this week. Having been ravaged every week lately by YB they finally get to fight someone else and get owned by Blackgate instead.

Then, being on YB, it is nice to fight a different server, even if we are losing. Nothing below T1 has a realistic chance at taking YB on and winning.

Megaserver decimated any sense of server pride. No more yelling in Lions Arch for reinforcements when a keep is going down. Even PVE types would come help in some capacity.

I missed the memo that said mega-server would be applied to Lion’s Arch. I could have sworn LA was supposed to be left out when it was originally announced.

I’d have to look it up, but I do see lots of guild tags from other servers in LA. Used to be server specific. So It may still be server specific with cross realm guilds. I don’t really care enough to go look it up and will just accept the punt off the cliff if I was wrong.

Lion’s Arch is indeed on megaserver and has been for a long time. The WvW commanders would often send someone to LA to request reinforcements when hard pressed in WvW, which has now stopped. If they hadn’t changed LA in that last update I might even suggest switching back to worlds there.

Umm, isn’t it time for Mordremoth to visit LA and do some ‘custom restyling’?

It also does not have to cost $10 per char slot if you use in game currency. I have done this myself so you could say they are free!

Nothing is free.

Most people forget most people could earn more money out of game than gold in game in a given time. Time equates to potential money earning, so the slots still wouldn’t be free.

Then it would be nice if they had slots on reduced price for a limited time every so often.

If anything is overpriced it’s the bank tabs and bag slots, however these are not necessary if you keep the amount of equipment to a minimum.

Why was Transmutation changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

There is a preview so chances of misclicking are very low, and the charges are available free from just logging onto a toon regularly, as PvP rewards and for mapping. So even if you do put the wrong skin on it usually isn’t the end of the world.

Then they exchanged all the fairly useless up to lvl 79 Transmutation Stones for charges, 3 for 1. As I, and many others, rarely if ever used transmutation before level 80 those Transmutation Stones were fairly worthless. I had over a stack of them.

This was actually one of the biggest pieces of goodwill anet has ever done in GW history.

Unfortunately, for this user, it just seems to take something away from the whole process. In GW2 and GW1 before it everything was the skins – otherwise there wouldn’t be a price difference between weapons with rare skins and those with expensive skins. So really the change was just going back to previous principles.

This is all psychological, I thought about it when they first brought the Trans charges out. I won’t be volunteering to go back.

divide servers into time zones

in WvW

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

If I recall, at launch we had 24 hour matches, but people were getting burned out fighting after reset every day.

Previously I suggested that the matches be 3 days + 2 hours long. (ie. 74 hours)
This means “reset time” will change every match, so people in different timezones can enjoy the exciting post-reset gameplay.

3 days also seems like a good middle ground for match length.

I suggested some time ago 48 hours from 7pm Friday to 7PM Sunday, the rest of the week being made up of non-scoring play with the option of one day off.

The problem of breaking it into 8 hour sections and making time zones is firstly some people work non standard hours but still want to participate. Secondly the issue of lag, if the server is far away many people will not like it.

That said something is apparently planned.

Had those been available free I might agree with you. It costs nothing for thieves and mesmers to stealth so why should it cost me for a trap? Unfortunately their cost and supply needs, along with the fact that you have to be lucky enough for the enemy to trigger it, makes those less useful that it may seem.

Then I don’t want to kill enemies in my spawn. I want anet to fix it so they can’t be there – permanently. That, like so many other things, is something they do not seem capable of.

Wonder if someone is able to explain how sfr can get straight into lord room at their home border hills without breaking gates or walls?? Theres about 100 trebs alone with countless other siege with bunch ppl guarding 24/7, yet they somehow find a way trough. Luckily they still fail miserably.

Same thing just happened in Desolation Bay keep. My thread was swiftly deleted though as will probably be the case with this one. An SFR upscaled guardian hacked their way into a keep we’ve held for 2 days and then disappeared under the lake bed.

I’ve heard rumors that’s how FSP garrison and our Longview tower were taken also, but I wasn’t there to witness it, this one I’ve seen with my own eyes and already reported them via the ticketing system, if that has any effect at all.

Often they seem to use an exploit for a Mesmer to glitch through gates, I have seen this happen personally. The Mes then ports any other team members in. It actually used to be worse than it is now, at one point enemies could easily glitch through gates by accident. I saw several run up the stairs in a tower and jump out again just to return to hitting the gate.

Then there have been many instance of zergs taking a place and leaving, no guards, no siege, no upgrades and most of all no Mesmer sweeps. Under that situation a single mesmer hiding can portal in a whole zerg.

The stupid increases to invisibility haven’t helped defenders here either.

Only active point week.

Kill give 1point, stomp 1-4points (1 if no bloodlust, 4 if you have all 3 BL), 0 point if you cap paper buildings and then race point with same amount as the server get if you do upgraded, so then last give server points for every upgrade, were Wall, Gate give more than merchant and so.

Points for kills tends to reward the dominant server, the one with the most people or capability to kill. It also rewards zerg vs zerg/GvG against defending locations. To be honest this is the worst ever idea anet has had,

Points for upgrading would be worth trying but the way upgrading is done will be changing with the new map.

Free transfers to t8 servers for the week. You got to do something. We had 2 people trying to defend our home boarderland last night on devona’s rest at prime time.

I have been the ONLY defender trying to protect Gunnar’s Hold borderland on occasion while I was there…. That is a mid table server.

I don’t think just free transfers would be enough. With the present situation there needs a lot more than that to get people moving. Give the lowest 2 tier servers a 5 X event reward multiplier, next couple of tiers get 3 X multiplier. Keeping the rest on 1X would mean there is a real advantage in moving down. Of course, if a server is successful it will move up, so they may throw weeks in order to maintain position.

That means it may not be the best option.

Yearly Rating Reset

in WvW

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

When a server ‘wins’ all of the accounts that have been participating for the year/season (flagged active WvW for 50% of the year/season by the new population calculations) would receive 1600 gems, and would have to pick a new server (just like when a new account is created).

So… All of the guilds on the top server get together, have a chat, and move to the same server. A few weeks later that is top and we have the same issue again.

I don’t think this is a good idea.

BTW, Red on EB is best slot — it’s the only one that is able to treb SM directly from the keep.

The red keep is also raised on a hill, making it more difficult to attack and much easier to defend.

Being in range of all surrounding towers except Mendon’s also helps. It’s commanding position means it is more able to support them with trebs or take down their walls for a force to retake. That makes being red a significant advantage if the sides are otherwise roughly equal.

Why was Transmutation changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serious.7083

Serious.7083

It used to be a fun simple process that would open in a separate window
We just sort of transmute and hope for the best now?

It is actually just as simple, if not more so, you chose your armor piece, chose the skin and then click the go button.

then you…

1) Don’t need to waste a weapon – under some circumstances this could be expensive.
2) Can make multiple weapons that have the same skin
3) you don’t even need to keep the original item the skin came on, this can save room
4) the item you are changing keeps it’s stats and Rune or sigil – no need to choose

The only down side to this is weapon sigils and armor runes you have put on Karma gear.. Originally by combining the two you could move the upgrade onto a salvageable piece of equipment and then recover it with a BL salvage kit. This is no longer possible and, as usual, anet refuse to comment on this issue.

The cure would have been simple, make karma gear salvageable but not give any materials. Then make the original upgrades account bound, zero value, and not accepted by Zommoros.

Serious.7083

A little OT, but what to use Karma for anyway, I have 300.000 and dont know what to spend it on

Karma skins.

Off the top of my head there are the three Temple armor sets (42k karma for each piece, 18 pieces, so 756k karma total), Ebon Vanguard, Lionguard, and Pirate weapons (9.8k each, 57 weapons, 55.86k total), Tier 1 cultural weapons (9.8k each, 76 weapons, 744.8k total), Tier 2 cultural weapons (35k each, 76 weapons, 2.66m total), and Tier 3 cultural weapons (63k each, 95 weapons, 5.985m total).

That’s 10,201,660 karma. I’m not even counting all the other karma skins like Duelist Armor and the such, but those won’t add much to the total since they’re relatively cheap.

Karma was, and probably still is, the main source of obsidian shards, a vital item in making legendary weapons and ascended gear.

300,000 isn’t really that much, I know some have tens of millions of karma. The only reason I don’t is that I spent the stuff on making legendaries.

You can also buy gathering tools, sickles, axes, picks from various heart vendors, although the Obsidian pick is only available in Southsun and requires an event. Many have crude salvage kits for sale.

It has nothing to do with superiority and everything to do with feeling like you have been proportionately rewarded for the challenge. If you could get the same rewards for far less effort, no one would ever do the harder content.

I guarantee you that if the reward for completing the hardest fractals was 50g and not even an exclusive item we would be happy as clams, because then we’d feel as though our effort was proportionately rewarded. Whatever the reward may be, it should always be proportionately based on the difficulty of the content. An exclusive skin/item is a worthy substitute for gold so you won’t hear us complaining. But I could give a kitten less if anyone knew I completed that content, I just want to be properly rewarded for it, whatever that reward may be.

I have a feeling, though, that if the reward for high level fractals was simply lots of gold, that you guys would still be complaining how it isn’t fair….

I have done lvl 50 fractals and I have got better loot for much less effort elsewhere, it is fairly easy if you know what to farm and where. A rare or unique skin is only worthwhile if you like it, otherwise fractal skins are not tradeable.

That hasn’t stopped me doing high level fractals or WvW or any of the other stuff I do in game. I often do stuff because it is challenging, not because it is easy or has valuable loot.

I agree with this sentiment completely.

The guy who gets the super rare drop can hold onto it or get rich by selling it. Either way he is greatly rewarded for participating in the content that produced the drop. Meanwhile the player who doesn’t care for content X can farm content Y to finance his purchase of the item. Its a win/win.

[/quote]

While the one who gets the super rare drop is lucky all of the other people who were there and participated just as much were not lucky. One person gets a precursor while the rest do not. That makes the reward system in GW2 a lottery.

Beyond that is hard slog and farming.

There is no win/win, just as there was no win/win in GW1. Win/win would mean that everyone who put in the effort would get the same reward.

On the other side there is very little that I consider elite content in GW2, most people should be capable of doing the content, if they wish to.

Merging Salvage Kits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serious.7083

They used to have a value. You even could sell them on the trading post. Thing is you could buy kits on post use it 14/15 or 24 of the 25 times and vendor it for 15 or 22 copper as the amount of uses left didn’t affect the vendor value And yes I did that 100s of times as copper meant a lot more back then. They are givin as rewards for personal storys if u are wondering y people would list them cheaper then u can buy iff vendor.

I believe Guild Wars 1 salvage kits had a value, and you could pass them freely between accounts. At the start GW2 kits had no value to the merchant and were soulbound on aquire, same with the gathering tools. The only salvage kit I can remember that you could sell on the TP in GW2 was the PvP one.

The reason you can’t stack kits is simple, anet are trying to sell copper and silver salvagomatics, these perform the same function as salvage kits but get them $$$.

They have never been stackable, so it’s not some sort of conspiracy to get us to spend gems. For whatever reasons, ANet created salvage kits as an item that had multiple uses.

Why quote me? I did not state that it was ever possible to stack kits. Nor did I state that it was a conspiracy. What I said was that supplying salvage kits that could be stackable may negatively affect the sales of salvageomatics.

As for mystic forge recipes, they could just make each use separate, as with a stack of consumables or materials, you then treat them as such, dropping two salvage kits together creates one with the combined capacity. If you wanted to split it again then Alt drag and drop.

The Dye is too high!!!!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Free market is free market, get over it and start farming SW Chests.

The market is, in the end, entirely controlled by anet. They could dump a trillion dyes onto the game in an instant and the prices would drop to coppers.

Anet are unlikely to do that but it does make the whole thing a MONOPOLY, not a free market.

A monopoly refers to a single entity controlling the supply, with the power to manipulate prices to their benefit. ANet doesn’t control the supply; they control the mechanics which allow players to create that supply. Further, manipulating those mechanics has zero direct benefit to ANet: they don’t make any money out of the high cost of a low-supplied item such as any of the Taimi dyes.

No, in this case they control the supply, they decide when it is available and what percentage of each will be supplied to the market. They can stop or start the supply at any time. The only thing they cannot do is force people to buy them.

They most certainly can make money out of high prices on the Taimi dyes, some people will buy gems, with real money, and trade those for gold if they do not have enough.

Asura character creation tips

On average I hate the hats on asura, and most of mine don’t wear them or have Aviator’s sunglasses. The one exception is Braham’s heavy armor, the horns on this on a small asura are as big as the character. This can mean they look like bobble heads even without drinking that obnoxious brew.

Most of the male asura faces look ugly and a lot of the female ones are too. I have tried to make mine cute but don’t even think sexy when creating an asura.

You can get some oddities though, I have a rabbit themed asura and one that is a 1960s alien lookalike….

There is very little in skirts, it’s trousers all the way, except for the Scallywag heavy armor. This also shows off the fact that asura have no feminine chest bumps. Asura female armor seems to be the same as male. This is shared with Charr female armor.

Remember, most of the time nobody will take any notice of your toon’s looks, what they are wearing or what they are using. Clothing and appearance is for your preference not someone else’s. Because they are so small an asura is less likely to be noticed than larger races such as a charr or norn.

Elder Scrolls! Online! What can possibly go wrong!!! Everything, apparently!

Let’s add some detail to that. They used the previous graphics engine, virtually unchanged. And they used the same old interface unchanged except for adding mail chat and group functions. For some reason they didn’t realize that this was unsuitable for a modern MMO. Just opening your inventory or mail meant you were a sitting duck, unable to move or defend yourself.

Then they installed what amounted to several dire exploits, including the vampire one. People could get bitten by a vampire and use vampiric skills in the equivalent of WvW. By using the correct set up a single player could suck a whole zerg dry and be impossible to kill while doing it – the zerg just could not do enough damage. I have no idea if they ever fixed this but they didn’t during the first months. The reason I have no idea is I wasn’t going to pay a monthly fee for a game that had such dire issues and let my account shut down.

Then, instead of a mastery system, they have Veteran levels. At some point they altered these, adding more. The problem being this made a lot of high level content so difficult as to be impossible if you hadn’t kept your character fully leveled by doing literally everything up to that point. Even on level people found a great deal of this content extremely challenging to ridiculous.

A good number of people still play it, but not me. The underlying game was good, there were plenty of quests to do. They just didn’t fix stuff fast enough when people were screaming at them about the issues. It is an ideal example of what not to do when creating and maintaining an MMO.

In order to chest farm you need keys, to get keys you need to do events. So it evens out.

I prefer to do events up to Vinewraith then go into the Labrinthe.

Labrinthe can be very profitable, even if you are alone while doing it.

Reminds me of the Christmas update, I nearly left game to download it. Changed my mind. We failed the underground champions and Vinewraith so I went into Labrinthe with a single key from previous. Got to the nightmare chest and…

Zap dropped out….

I then had to log out of game and do the update while hoping that the precursor didn’t just vanish. It’s now Bolt, and carried by my warrior.

Inquest Golem Mk 2
Getting rid of containers, fine. Make the turrets target large groups with AoE fire attacks and be invulnerable. This hopefully will encourage people to move rather than stand still pressing 1. Actually you would only need 1 turret on top of the command room.

Megadestroyer. Make waves of lava spread out to cover shoreline when it emerges – force the mobs of people to move. Lower high points to level with magma and provide safe areas further back to stand on while this happens (in a similar way to the Vinewraith’s champions). Really this boss is fairly tough enough considering the pre-events, a few more adds wouldn’t really add to the event.

Shadow Behemoth. Being instantly downed isn’t fun.

The Shatterer. Main problem is it is stationary once down. The adds that do appear are easily killed. Needs to regularly spread strong poison/burning fields sideways to counter these positions, rocks can stay.
Make crystals heal to 100% health if they are not all destroyed within time limit.

The other side of this is not to make it too complex or difficult for small numbers to win, these need to be scaled to suit even fairly small groups. You don’t really need to make it harder, or over complex like Tequatl, you just need to make people think and move. In many cases these events could be done with an army of bots.

Wish list:
-Royal Terrace Pass

I was given one – worst present ever.

Why? For crafting there is the option of WvW, providing borderland isn’t full.

For storage/TP/merchant, just visit PvP portal.

Plus pass only works on one character. I have 9. Buying one for each would be ridiculously expensive and not worth while doing.

On making Healing Power Worthwhile.

Until anet stop making changes to increase the damage done by builds and nurf damage instead nothing will change.

Stopping a single person generating 25 stacks of might is easy, they just haven’t done it yet. Reducing peak damage is also possible, just put a cap on all attacks as to the max damage that can be done per hit.

You could also, as a stat gets higher, reduce it’s effectiveness. While you are on max bonus crit damage to 100%.

Then, perhaps, people will realise they can do other things than just damage with their stats.

Problem is, unless someone has a really poor build, they are probably overpowered as it is.

And the reason people don’t like necros in dungeons and fractals is they assume necro = minions = unwanted aggro.

Some people don't like hard mode

So what I’m getting from OP is this example

1 man practices, keeps in shape, does all he can to prepare for a competitive sport.
2nd man can’t be bothered, because he doesn’t enjoy being active.

Both participate. 1st man ran the whole 10 miles. The other man took a nap and watched television and takes a taxi to the finish line and expects the same prize.

How is that fair to the person who earned it?

It’s not. And that’s what should matter more over.

It’s the same reason why drops and rewards are different for story mode dungeons vs explorable.

this isn’t a competitive sport.
it isn’t even a competition.
the aim isn’t for you to prove how better you are than your fellow men.
you want something challenging and hard and competitive? start playing chess.

It’s all a matter of perception – what chess is to you GW2 may be to him. Competition is a part of our every day lives and each person decides what is and what isn’t a competition to them.
You saying this game isn’t a competition doesn’t mean it isn’t. It just means for you it isn’t. For some getting more stuff or having better stuff than others might be the sole focus of play.

I agree with Harper, it depends on your vision of the game, PvP is definitely competitive, so is WvW. PvE can be even if it isn’t actually fighting against other people. It depends on what you are competing over. I have been in a guild where we competed over vanquishing a specified zone in GW1 and how fast we could do dungeons. There is always the possibility of competition over what goodies you have managed to get.

Then the thread isn’t about getting rewards for little effort, although that is possible too, there are plenty who make huge amounts of gold on the TP. This is about keeping the less able players on board in newer content and not making it too hard for them. Reward level should be based on effort, trouble is it rarely is in GW2. Someone may spend months playing with minimal gains while someone else gets a precursor drop in the first day.

As for story mode vs exploreable, I have often found exploreable to be the easier option but have greater rewards.

I don’t know for sure that it will happen, but I’ve seen items come through from time to time. I agree with you that this is a particularly cute item. Keep your eye on the store and maybe they will make a reappearance!

We did, I have the gems ready, they didn’t….

Ummm………

Can I have kitty ears too? My GW1 ele was sooo cute with them
