How does Retaliation work?

in Guardian

Technically it is still reflecting damage as the damage it does requires you to be hit first. It just doesn’t reflect the actual damage done to you, but a fixed amount based on your power (for balance).

Not really, the synergy isn’t there for sword/shield. Sword is more of an offensive weapon for guardian. Now mace/shield on the other hand…

Human Cultural Heavy Armor

Shimond.2478

I’m guessing because the design is that of the guardian armor at char select, they wanted the stats to match something a guardian would wear (burning guardian at any rate).

That being said, transmute stones make this a non issue. The vast majority of people buying cultural (or any karma) armor will be doing so simply for the appearance to morph onto their crafted/otherwise armor.

One thing it seemed to me in talking to a couple others that did this storyline was the racial background you chose influences what she looks like. I thought that was a great touch, how saying I’m Canthan actually made her look like she was from Cantha too.

Swords are great, the mistake here is considering them a support or party weapon. They’re just raw damage/murder, something this class does not have that much of otherwise (considering the theme). A sword/torch condition build is quite a monster to behold.

Guardian Speed

Shimond.2478

I probably came off a bit flippant but it’s true. I feel the staff is plenty for moving around the world. Yea it takes you actively using it instead of some passive run speed buff like some other classes get, but it’s actually more speed than any of them when it’s up. You can also buff npcs this way (great for escort quests) along with other players.

It is a pity that our shield has such large CD that makes it’s use not as good as a focus.
3 free blocks (no dmg at all) + blind and condition remover is far better than a long CD bubble and 33% less dmg for a few seconds.

Shields should either have a shorter CD on their skills or add way more armor.

I used to think that way until I took the 90 toughness trait for shields. There are enough hits you cannot block that this makes all the world of difference for.

wrong genre… ? Not designed for 1v1 .. ? you missed my point that my class is weak overall. I don’t think necro can get away with 1v1’ing anyone. This game is supposed to be balanced for tournament level play is it not? That dictates there should be SOME fairness around here but necro is just plain mediocre. Guardian is definitely on a different level at the moment and I’d just like some acknowledgement that your class is simply better than mine.

I don’t know enough about necro (and I don’t think you know enough about guardian) to make that statement. It could be true, but that could also be a ‘necro problem’ and not a ‘guardian problem’ which you seem to be approaching this as.

Losing one duel to one class one time does not make something broken.

Games like these typically aren’t designed around 1v1. If you’re looking for a 50/50 shot at killing anything in 1v1 with any spec…you’re in the wrong genre. The weakness in a full healing/condition removal build is offense. But if they nullify your only source of offense of course they’ll eventually attrition you down.

If you have less health than a guardian as a necromancer you’re obviously completely ignoring vitality and he’s speccing fully into it.

Let me redirect you here to show you why: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Health

Necromancers are at the top tier of base health, guardians are at the bottom.

We can fully heal with two abilities (that I regularly use at any rate). A full heal spec guardian (which incidentally has no vitality) can get a full heal with the healing signet (32s cooldown with traits to reduce signet cooldown) and we can fully restore health with our elite (3m cooldown) #5 ability which has a pretty long cast time.

We do get the ability to remove conditions fairly regularly if built right. I run with the healing signet (removes a condition every 10s) and the trait that removes a condition every 10s, along with purging flames (removes conditions on a 40s cooldown), smite condition (removes a condition on a 15s cooldown) and contemplation of purity (turns all conditions to boons on a 60s cooldown).

So yea, you could say we’re definitely anti condition, but being able to fully heal like you say AND have more health than you? Not really possible.

I haven’t tested to answer your original question, but we can assume when they say ‘aegis ends’ or ‘aegis is removed’ are the same thing. I say this because the buff lasts some 9h or so before it ends ‘naturally’ (which it never does since it’s reapplied every 40s).

I would suggest stop running into it, first off.

Second, that would completely ruin the ability in WvW. It has a prohibitive enough cooldown and cast time to keep it from being overpowered as is.

Guardian's Zealous Blade (Zeal Trait)

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

It’s more of a survivability boost for large AE groups than a tanking trait. Greatsword is not the weapon you’re looking for (nor is zeal the line you’re looking for) to be a defensive guardian.

Anyone using a mace?

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

Tons and tons, it’s an amazing weapon. I can’t see anyone trying to ‘tank’ in this game without a mace/shield setup.

I think people might avoid it because it’s an inelegant weapon. The third chain hit has a very long animation and as such the damage is lower than any other 1h weapon, but that’s not the weapon’s purpose. The #2 with a healing suit does a tremendous amount of regeneration and #3 is a lifesaver (literally) when used right.

1 hand sword and shield? opinions

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

I never found sword to be a defensive weapon, because of the way the #1 skill works (putting on burning more than any other weapon). Sword/Torch in a condition build seems to be the design intent.

Not saying you can’t use a shield, do whatever you want. Just that the sword is an offensive weapon, not defensive (as opposed to the mace). So your kind of build is some sort of hybrid. Nothing wrong with that, but wasn’t sure if that was your intent.

the Support Path of the Gaurdian

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

My support path was actually 30 honor/valor and 10 radiance (for faster signets – signet heal is really powerful with full healing gear – its a full heal). I run staff and mace/shield so I can double as support and tank, basically. It works exceptionally well in pve and really good (though mostly just pure staff) in pvp. The nice thing about those lines is you can focus on either meditations or shouts depending on how you want to build.

Blocking

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

I think the switch isn’t a bad idea, though not for the reason you list. More to keep mace from being the default defensive weapon because of how amazing its #3 ability is. I would love to run sword/shield instead for increased mobility and the extra range reflect but the #3 mace ability is just too good (not to mention how good #2 is with full healing suit).

As far as the shield goes, because of the +90 toughness trait I’ve never felt that it isn’t incredibly useful as is.

The staff and the guardian

in Guardian

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

The staff is actually a pretty amazing weapon because of 3, 4 and 5. If you use a stability shout (we have two) you can ensure you won’t get interrupted while casting in pve/pvp. I was running staff with a full shout utility build and full cleric armor (level 80 rare) last night with great success.

The 1 and 2 I only really enjoy in pve zergs since they’re great for tapping multiple mobs. Sure you can detonate the #2 for a small heal, and it’s useful but as you’ve pointed out it’s limited in its trajectory. I’m not entirely sure that requires it to be fixed, however. They’ve been pretty good at shying away from pure healer classes and staff guardian is borderline there as it is (particularly if you run with the elite).

End Game at 80?

Shimond.2478

I get the impression some of you are not familiar with Arena and how they do things. If you think the game we have now is the game as it will remain forever simply because there is no sub fee, you’re incredibly mistaken. There will be regular expansions just like there was for GW1.

If you’ve already run out of things to do in this game or find what is in it boring, this is absolutely the wrong game for you. The good news is, you don’t have to ‘keep’ paying for it.

End Game at 80?

Shimond.2478

I should preface this post with this: I understand the game has been out for only 10 days. I’ve really disliked the endgame so far. The pvp part of this game, is excellent. Sure there are some balancing issues but aside from that its been spectacular. End game PvE is nonexistent. Arah was really poorly done in my opinion. It was not difficult, or entertaining. The Zhaitan fight was very dull. I don’t understand why so many people playing this game are so quick to go after those of us who want to participate in end game PvE dungeons. Its an almost integral part of the MMO experience. As someone who wants to do both PVP and PVE this game is severely lacking in the latter area.

So you have 100% map completion then and have the explore sets from all the other dungeons? Thanks to scaling, your ‘endgame dungeons’ actually start at level 30, not 80. Sounds like plenty of content to me.

Well ‘support’ is VERY much in the game, try out a staff guardian sometime (or water elementalist) it’s just that ‘pure healer’ is very much NOT in the game.

You’ll be disappointed if you try to approach the water elementalist or guardian in that mindset. They have some healing abilities but they pale (incredibly so) to everyone’s self heal and dodge abilities.

Each race has several racial skills, though typically they pale compared to profession specific versions of them (when they exist). They’re not usually enough to consider one race over another outside aesthetic reasons, and that’s not something anyone on this forum is going to tell you what you’d like.

I’d suggest just trying out some combinations and see what you think. Take them to the mists if you want to see how they perform ‘endgame’.

For dust try the starter Charr area, that’s about all those ghosts drop regularly. Blood can be found from minotaurs though the best concentration I found was the harpies in Queensdale. Poison you can get from grubs/worms and spiders, there’s a couple areas in several zones with relatively fast respawns and/or lots of mobs to farm. Bone chips I found regularly off ice trolls in the norn area, otherwise I haven’t seen them as often.

Another completely diffrent option is to kill centaur or bandits as the bags they drop randomly become any crafting item (harvestable and drop). There are several events with tons of these kinds of mobs that if you can ae tag you can get a great deal of materials off of.

What stats should i stack for a Guardian that can DPS but survive?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

What I mean is unlike bleeding for example you do not have to ‘ramp up’ the damage for it to hurt. Burning damage instantly hits as hard as it is going to hit when it ticks. Yes it is a damage over time…damage per second. Conditions hurt, very badly, very quickly in this game…when you build for it. Sword/Torch for guardian is an extremely fun and powerful (single and ae) damage spec.

What stats should i stack for a Guardian that can DPS but survive?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Shimond.2478

Shimond.2478

Toughness is an excellent ‘hard to kill’ stat combined with utility skills that remove conditions (as those ignore armor/toughness).

As far as offense goes, power will help with the hits of your sword, but condition damage helps a lot too with every 5th hit causing burning (along with other abilities you can have to set stuff on fire). Consider that among conditions, burning damage is affected the most by condition damage (as it does not stack, but applies its damage instantly and ignores armor/toughness).
