The stat system of the first game was better

Sirendor.1394

I agree to the OP… GW1 system was faaaar superior to GW2 system.

Stats tied to gear… is mediocre
It’s basically a farm for armour, not because of the skins but because of the stats it has.
Instead of enjoying your time playing you’re forced to grab stats. And if you make alts you can begin the process all over again.

Guild Wars 1 had one single purpose for armour and weapons: the armour value/attack value they had. And those high rating armour/weapon were fairly easy to get too). There was no such thing as berserker’s, carrion, rabid, cleric, dire, sentinel, celestial… to farm for. You simply had attributes that were free for the resetting whenever you wished to reset them. Runes were also there, but we have them today aswell.

Well they could do they same thing for exotics.

For instance I have a whole set of berserkers, dire and soldier on my warrior. Got cleric, berserker, soldier, knight on my guard. It takes up a LOT of space. Just let us merge all these items and swap the stats when out of combat.

I think people are severely underrating Medi Guard’s roaming capabilities. With Sword 2, GS 3, and Judge’s Intervention you have 2400 range burst mobility. The teleports are also instant cast and combined with a plethora of blocks at your disposal, you can jettison yourself out of sticky situations pretty well

Like with Necro, roaming on a Guardian just requires a bit more map awareness, with an emphasis on keeping track of ambient creatures/wildlife as escape teleport targets.

The other great benefit of roaming on a Guardian is that people constantly underestimate you, especially thieves and warriors, whom you counter pretty hard and run into a lot while roaming.

I agree with this aswell. One of my most succesful roaming builds on guardian was medi build with gs & hammer (don’t like sword that much) and runes of speed. If you’re a skilled player you can turn guardian into a killing machine.

For all of you shouting “Perplexity! Condi Spam!”… I run no condition builds for roaming, and yes I win more often than not. So whether condi is meta or not… depends entirely on you.

And care to share what you roam with then? I’m sure it might be d/d elementalist or other class that can clear a lot of conditions really fast.

I have experience roaming on 6 classes, though I have favourites of course. Atm I prefer running warrior, elementalist or thief for roaming, simply because of the huge mobility each of them features, and which you need as a roamer if you don’t want to end up as zerg food each time you peak your head out of a tower.

The builds I use, though, are not above average in terms of condi cleansing. The warrior uses condi cleanse on use of the burst skill and has a lot of active defenses that make it possible to sit out the condi spamming on the part of other players. Elementalist is fairly strong on condi cleansing of course, but I run it as zerk making it rather challenging to survive. The thief build varies from d/p to d/d to s/d, so again not really a build created on countering condis.

Anyways, my point here is that although some people will say you need to go condi to win, that only applies insofar as you suck at playing everything else.

Hey there. I was playing on the blue borderlands yesterday and had a full party running. Each of us had serious lagg issues, so they were obviously server related. Every 20-40 seconds a lagg spike would hit us all simultaneously making everything freeze for up to 5 seconds with no foes around… We eventually just logged out after experiencing this for 1 hour a half. The server we had this in was Fissure of Woe and the map was Blacktide Borderlands. Time was 3:30pm GMT+1 till about 5pm

I think the list of things we didn’t want (but got anyways) is infinitely longer than the list of things we did want (but didn’t get)…

Arenanet: maybe try to ask if something is a good idea before implementing it. This is not the way.

Please remove trash feature #1533224 from this game and give us something we are specifically asking for…

Is there gonna be free transfers again

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

Imo they should revert the system and make prices based on world ranking.

A first pricing method could be based on what league you’re in and what one you’re going to.

  • Gold league:
    - 2000 gems to transfer to gold from silver or bronze
    - 1600 gems to transfer to gold from gold league
  • Silver league:
    - 1600 gems to transfer to silver from bronze league
    - 1200 gems to transfer to silver from silver league
    - 800 gems to transfer to silver from gold league
  • Bronze league:
    - 800 gems to transfer to bronze from bronze league
    - 600 gems to transfer to bronze from silver league
    - 400 gems to transfer to bronze from gold league

Alternatively they could make pricing based on world position within the league (from 1 to 9) changed every 2 weeks.
Number 1-3 for 1600 gems
Number 4-6 for 800 gems
Number 7-9 for 400 gems

Gold league should still get a penalty in that case with a highering of prices for 400 gems. So a respective 2000, 1200 and 800 gems for the various worlds.

Guild Ranking , is it a good idea ?

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

No it would be a terrible idea for everyone who hates zerging.

I have been running in small scale since 2012, always with a guild that had the same mindset and with people who enjoy challenges in the form of fighting outnumbered, ninjaing structures, roaming etc

A reward system based on ‘this guild captured x, killed y etc’ would have everyone who doesn’t like to be running in a guild larger than 20 at a disadvantage, and zerging is stimulated A LOT already in this game.

If one, they should stimulate people who oppose zerging. This idea would bring about the exact opposite and would destroy the small scale element of WvW, especially if they rewarded blobs/zergs even more.

does GW2 have a future?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

Hey there. I played GW2 since the open beta, and to be honest, I think the answer to your question is no. GW2 started great, but 2 years further we’re pretty much still on the same spot.

Basically: No content additions, few improvements (feature packs my kitten, focus on casual audience, lack of communication with the players, making empty claims, parting entirely from the original philosophy, neglecting PvP and WvW and I can go on for hours more about what WENT WRONG.

The list of things done well would mainly be combat, visuals, UI. Game mechanics however are very poor (again because of reasons stated above).

Will it help to implement all the things we wanted implemented over the course of the last 2 years (and counting)? No it will not: too little, too late. All is vain.

Transfer prices: leveling playerbases

in WvW

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

Hey guys, just a random idea to make wvw less of a blow-out.

Maybe it’s a good idea just to ignore total server population, but instead look at the WvW rank of servers to estimate transfer prices.

Last ‘wvw season’ they made it per ‘league’, but that was basically bad design cause it still lowered transfer prices for some high-end servers in the gold and bronze tiers, while making transfer prices for some bronze servers extremely high.

Solution: scrap the idea of adjusting transfer prices per league. Bronze tier transfer prices should simply be a LOT lower than transfer prices for silver and gold, while gold should have maxed transfer prices. In fact, all bronze servers should probably get free transfers.

Also, if you want “real pvp” go play Spvp.

Have you stepped into WvWvW the last year? I can assure you it’s not what it used to be. The whole place is a zergfest, where most zergs don’t even fight eachother but take towers and don’t defend them.

The “elitist” guild groups are the only good thing there still is in WvWvW imo, and I think rewriting WvW from scrap is appropiate. The game mode sucks big time for everyone who enjoys PvP.

I agree mostly with what you say Marcus.

GW1 was a lot more enjoyable because you could buy most things you needed/wanted from merchants, or could earn them through playing the game, rather than this bull kitten in GW2 where you have to either
a) be very lucky (some people get 10 precursors in a month, others get 0 in 2 years)
b) grind your kitten off to buy them

Player-regulated economies shouldn’t be in a game. That only leads to kittening them up.

Still waiting for end game content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

  • What do you the players see as end game play?
  • What level of player skill is required for this end game? (low skill end game, mid skill end game, high skill end game)
  • Should players be exclude for end game either through skill level or play style?

These are tough questions, Bezagron!

  1. Endgame is what players do once they’ve finished the game. A SP game ends once you’ve finished it. MMO’s don’t. Given the nature of MMO’s as an “endless” cycle of play, I’d like to offer the idea that Endgame is a progression from one piece of new content to another. The best endgames offer new things to do at reasonable intervals, although no interval is short enough for some players. Since new content cannot come fast enough for everyone, endgame content is usually stretched by adding rewards that players might desire, and requiring repetition to get those rewards.
  2. Endgame pursuits should offer something for everyone. MMO’s generate more profits if more people play. Even if they don’t all pay, they provide the “massive” that will keep some of those who do pay interested in logging in. However, a game can also bend over too far trying to please everyone — which usually means they don’t please anyone. The best games will try to find a balance between catering to different groups while trying to retain a consistent philosophy of development.
  3. While exclusion should never be a developer’s s goal, egalitarian content development always ends up catering to either the low-end or the mid-range of skill. As with any distribution, the mid-range (skilled) is likely to be larger than either the high end (extreme skill) or the low end (barely skilled). Since I believe that content should be provided to cater to all demographics, it would be necessary for players to recognize that, “Hey, this content isn’t aimed at me, but that’s OK.” Unfortunately, many players are not going to accept this.

Hey Indigo, my suggestion for having content for ALL skill levels, is simply adding Hard Mode to certain game modes (dungeons mostly), with exclusive but untradeable rewards (so as to not create another monopoly on the market).

Still waiting for end game content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

I am not comparing it to GW1. But I do see some much better reward-system in some other games thats for sure. Like I said, the currency grind is just boring to me.

The reasons why the loot system is bad in this game as compared to others, to you anyway, is because the goal of the company is to make it so you can run pretty much anywhere and still get loot. It’s an experiential game. So you can get anything doing pretty much anything. That’s the ideal for the game.

The idea that you have to do X hard content to get better rewards is against the philosophy of the game over all. If you make something so rewarding that people have to do it, then the rest of the game gets ignored.

So those who play FOR rewards are unhappy.

People like me who enjoy rewards but don’t play for them, are happier. I don’t want to have to run content X to get what I want. I want a chance to get it anywhere.

If they make certain hard content more worth it, then people will feel they have to do that content. If they make it so that rewards across the board are raised, nothing with have value and everything will be inflated.

There really are no easy answers.

\

You contradict yourself. If there are players that do not care about rewards and do not play for rewards. The fact that there is an area with more challenging content and greater rewards would be irrelevant to those " experience only " players.

Since it is Not rewards that drives them, they are not being forced to do anything they do not wish to do. They would either do it for the experience, or NOT do it, because they do not wish the experience…. or have done it, and had the experience.

make up your mind. Either there are a Lot of players that ONLY play for experience, and then they can ignore " High reward areas." or they are people that run after rewards Like a skinner box laboratory rat.

which is it?

A negative interpretation might be that the “experience” only players want the entire game to be " experience only". And if there is an area that drops rewards, that rewards gameplay they do not like, somehow the fact that others that DO… have those rewards while they don’t….

I don’t Know, seems kind of entitled to me.

But I am sure that isn’t the reason.

I’m not contradicting myself. I’m simply explaining how human nature works. You don’t play ONLY for rewards and I don’t play ONLY for experience.

If they make something really awesome that I have to do X to get, and I want that thing, I’ll end up hating the game or not getting it. Because some rewards are nice. I don’t play FOR them but of course, I want a chance to get them. That’s the difference.

It’s why I enjoy this game as it is, and wouldn’t enjoy it if they made one type of content that much more rewarding.

Ermagerd! Vayne! You’re back! Missed you. :o

Best and Worst of GW2 -- An Opinion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

Best
- Combat: smooth, reactionary and very vibrant feel
- Areas: most of them look absolutely stunning, big thumbs up for the graphics designers
- Music: just adds to the feeling for me. It all fits, makes me feel back in the Tyria of Guild Wars 1.

In between
- Dungeons: could be better, too repetitive, not enough in quantity
- PvP in general: it’s fun, but has been ignored and neglected since launch: lack of game modes, lack of diversity, not enough customization overall.

Worst
- Crafting… it’s just pointless in this game. It doesn’t feel like you’re doing anything other than ‘playing the UI’ (certainly not playing the game). Most gear is also cheaper to just buy.
- Open world: boring, zergy, badly designed
- Story: stereotype, bland

making the game harder and nerfing gold farming methods accomplishes two things

1. people who are dedicated players who like to farm for stuff will quite, making server load lighter
2. people who aren’t so dedicated but still want gold will end up spending even more money on buying gold because it’s now impossible to make gold by playing the game

it’s very easy to understand these kind of situations once you face the fact that it’s all about the money

inb4 “omg how dare anet try to make money blah blah blah”

yes, anet deserves money for content. however, taking present content and making it harder is not content, and therefore not deserving of money.

it’s sad to say that i’m thinking about leaving too, for wildstar

Do it, you won’t regret it. I approached it with reservations after the severe disappointment suffered with this game over the last year. Wildstar’s what an MMO should be and is worth the $15 a month.

You do understand that you are basically supporting the same company.

And so the game will likely have or get similar money grabbing tactics. In fact the 15 dollar a month might be exactly that. And if your willing to pay the 15 dollar you might just as well start playing WoW as that game proven itself by being successful for 10 years now.

  • raises her hand sheepishly, as she rides around on her two person rocket.*

All kidding aside. I am not going to leave gw2 just yet. I am not on playing it, since it’s rewards are all in parts of the game I am not too thrilled about. The manifesto said play how I want, if i go chasing the gold Like a skinner box lab rat…I am not Playing the way I want.

As long as playing the game the way i want is nowhere near as profiteable as farming dungeon runs… I prefer to monitor the Forums for changes… and play… something else.

But the last thing I will do, is give more money to NCSoft.

So whether Wildstar looks good or not, I am giving that a pass.

I think people need to cool it on the “omg if it isn’t satisfying me 100% then I’m not able to play how I want, Anet you lied!” thing. If you want to just do PvP, go for it. You want to mindlessly grind mobs in PvE, go for it, you want to just do crafting and JPs, sure no one’s stopping you, you want to RP, run some dungeons, do some WvW, stand in a circle dancing, whatever, by all means go and do it you can play any way you want! Oh, you want to do any of those things but also make good money doing it? Well, that’s a completely different issue. Not a “play how I want” issue.

I would like to work directly towards items I might like. Not by grinding gold. Thats all.

Well, some could argue that by grinding gold you are indeed working directly towards items you like…

Hypothetically if, let’s say you wanted Dusk, they said, “ok to get Dusk you can run X dungeon and then at the end you will get 1-2 ‘Dusk tokens’. Collect 1000 Dusk tokens and you can trade them in for Dusk!”

Believe it or not if Anet did this then I bet a lot of people would be happy. “Oh man we can finally work toward something we want!” I can hear them exclaiming.

But quite honestly, in this scenario, you could swap the term Dusk tokens for gold coin and you would have the system we currently have.

Hahaha, except that:
a) those dusk tokens wouldn’t loose their worth, like gold does very fast (precursors in beginning of the game were 10 to 50 gold, now most are 300-800 gold)
b) there wouldn’t be a monopoly on precursors owned by a group of wealthy trading post flippers

Your top 5 design mistakes in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sirendor.1394

Sirendor.1394

This thread needs a revive, it’s full of what everyone finds bad in Guild Wars 2, and I do think enough time has passed (nearly 5 months) to see what has changed and what still needs changing.

My original 5 “worst design mistakes”:
1. Stats being bound to armour and weapons.
2. Ascended gear
3. Upscaling alts in WvW
4. Zergs being most effective & profitable in every area of the game
5. Skins: why is there no database?
[If I can cheat, I would add Living story (or actually the general story): so stereotype, so bland, it’s fit for a 12-year old. A total letdown]

Since then 5. has been changed: there is actually a skin wardrobe now!

New list?

  • Gear-bound stats: I still disagree with this philosophy because it makes ‘gear’ more important than everything else. I stick with the idea of gear giving only “armour” and nothing else (see Guild Wars 1).
  • Zerg-content: too much of it, and too little instanced (and balanced) content
  • Living story: awww, it’s still as bad as it was, but I guess will wait for Season 2 to see if Anet learned anything at all (the journal is a step in the right direction)
  • Skin policy concerning gem store: there really should be new skins acquired through the game, closing them off in gem store is just wrong.
  • World vs. World: is in a sorry state, karma-training all day long, it needs something to reduce farming and incentivize actually fighting people.

What race do you want playable?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t see how killing off another one of the ancient races actually adds anything to the game (addition by subtraction?) Unless they are trying to cut all ties to the past for in game characters and I concede that may be possible.

Jotun (idiots)
Mursaat (evil and hidden)
Forgotten (no where to be seen, maybe dead)
Seer (dead)
Dwarfs (sure lets kill of the last ties to Tyria’s past)

I think the argument can be made why they shouldn’t be playable for reasons some of the previous posters have stated to add a more serious tone to the story, but how much will it really add? Making a race that VERY few of the player base has actually encountered in GW2’s Tyria finally snuffed out? Sure people that have followed the lore from GW1 will recognize it but I would argue several GW1 players (well in my circles at least) wanted to play as the dwarfs in GW2 not see them killed off.

Also, GW2 does not use a consistent serious tone. You can argue they should but currently it’s more lighthearted with the occasional bit of seriousness sprinkled in. The art design alone makes the game come across and “playful” and “fun”.

You forgot Margonite. I have no clue what happened to them when Abaddon died… do they still exist, cause hell, concept art looks beautiful.

Also, can you imagine Margonite + Chronomancer (see picture 2).

@Zudet: You forgot to mention that no group will ever take a level 40 for a dungeon, or they’ll kick him during the run.

Roaming Servers and Bronze League

I think roaming is done with for most servers atm… when I want a fair fight, I just go to SPvP nowadays cause WvW is either condibunkers with perplexity runes or 50 man blob.
And this comes from an ex-vabbi player. The server is better than most of the blob silver league servers, but don’t expect much in the way of roaming.

Problem with GW2 combat is this:

50 vs. 50 is usually a blob fight that is over in 30 seconds.

  • if everyone gets around 50% chance to get a loot bag off a person, that’s 25 loot bags x 50 = 1250 loot bags

Now look at a fight I have had one time: 3 vs 10 fight took us 5+ minutes with constant retreating, might stacking, luring, CC-ing, healing eachother, stomping etc: basically very heavy action;

  • slightly higher loot bag ratio (75%) because less people to share tag with
  • 7,5 bags x 3 = 22,5 bags for 5+ minutes of fighting

My point: rewards are not balanced, and slightly bigger rewards should be given for smaller number fights, because 50 man combat always resorts into a lootbag massacre based very much on luck and having good people with you in your zerg, where anything below 10 is a strategic, hard fight that requires personal skill to win.

- Make the amount of objectives x10, and capturing a structure require capping different locations at the same time.

  • I’m not keen on there being more objectives, but I think the structure capping requiring different locations is a great idea from TESO.

Yeah i’m not sure where I got the idea for making more objectives… I think diversity.
Fighting on different places at the same time is a must indeed if you want any good PvP experience, glad you agree.

- Make defending rewards similar to the reward for a dungeon run, based on how long you in particular were active in the defense.

  1. I don’t see why.
  2. This could be a massive gold-inflatory problem. While I can see that your counter being that it would be dependent on how long the defence was, I think this could be exploited far too easily. “Defend-Bots” would definitely be a problem for a number of reasons.
  • Because defending at the moment is by most people ignored. I don’t think that the above karma-circling is what WvW should be. It’s a disgrace.
  • I do think rewards for PvP should be at least the same or higher than rewards for a PvE (lol) dungeon. I agree that GW2’s system is bad: running past a structure then tagging an enemy while in the radius is enough to give you the reward for it. I’m sure there are ways to measure damage dealt, % gate repaired, siege built and used.

Hi Svarty, thanks for the response. As I said, it’s a WIP, hardly anything ready for release. I do appreciate debate around what would be better/more efficient, because that’s the only way we can get a change to anything. Here goes!

- Give weekly rewards for match-ups to all players.

  • Please expand on this. Do you mean ALL players? Or people who did enough in WvW to earn these rewards? Are these rewards the same as the chest(s) we all get every week?

1) I ment all “active” wvw players, though I see several things that need elaboration.

a) How to determine who has been active?
I would opt for achievement-based. Give WvW players a ‘Match-up reward chest’ per week they play, based on completing achievements that boost your server’s score.

For example possible achievements could be:
- kill 20 dolyaks
- defend 5 structures
- take 15 ruins
- kill 20 sentries
- 20 players killed
- 10 camps taken
- used 100 supplies for repairing
- …

My guess is that there should be an achievement for everything, not with the purpose of completing them all (there shouldn’t be AP given for them), but rather for making sure nobody gets left out, whatever way they play WvW (albeit small scale, taking keeps, doing GvG…).

Rewards could then scale:
- Completed 3 achievements: Tiny Server Cache
- Completed 6 achievements: Small Server Cache
- Completed 9 achievements: Medium Server Cache
- Completed 12 achievements: Large Server Cache

This would eliminate abusing the system, because you’ll actually need to play the game for it.

- Give empty buildings (to counter PvDoor) npcs that scale with the amount of players inside: nobody inside? Add more npcs and give them the option to use siege weapons, supply and blueprints. This will promote the feel of a vibrant world, and will counter PvDoor.

  • This one makes no sense. This idea promotes people vacating buildings.
  • A better idea would be to have a certain number of NPC guards and spread that number across the number of objectives you own. Thus, if you own fewer buildings, you have more guards at each building. Conversely, as you gain more objectives, each has fewer NPC guards, allowing smaller groups of enemies to attack them more easily.

I saw the weakness in people leaving buildings because that way they can keep them, but I don’t know how else to prevent people from capping empty things all the time. I really hate the people that ruin WvW by karma-training.

You all have heard the stories about commanders saying “Yo, we don’t need you defending that structure, come join our zerg here cause it’s more rewarding to simply take things, we’ll just run in circles and cap things back once the enemy is gone.”
That’s really just degenerate and kittened. Come on, are we hamsters?

One thing I know is that if you added guards like these (in the current situation) hamster-people would be fighting ‘something’, and that’s really better than kicking in doors and killing the champ in 5 seconds, then moving on and on in a never-ending circle of loot.

Your suggestion, while interesting would not really change anything. It certainly wouldn’t stop the hamsters, because there are 2 guards more outside the gates.
Maybe if you combined your idea + guards that can use siege, it could work.

There are likely better ways to counteract PvDoor: rewards drop based on number of players that were involved in the defense.
5 defending vs. 50 attacking
>[less rewards than]<
20 defending and 50 attacking

- Add in risk vs. reward (small scale and guild groups > blobbing)

  • I have two points about this:
  • There is no point in rewarding smaller groups (virtually) materially for attacking larger ones. There are already many groups who run small groups and try to take on the skill-less blob. The motivation is already there. FUN.
  • It will require a skills rebalance to allow small groups to take on huge blobs and win. At the moment there is an approximate threshold above which a smaller group simply can’t beat a blob, regardless of how much skill they have. I think this is probably working as intended and I’m OK with it.

I do agree that it is a lot more fun to do small scale as compared to autorunning and tabbing out behind a pug-commander (one of my friends was autorunning, steering into tower/keep/camp capture areas and chatting with 3 friends via whispers meanwhile).

I’m not saying that small groups should be given an advantage over big blobs, because that’s where risk-reward comes in. The chance that 5 win against 20 is small, but it happens.
