I keep seeing so many people say things like “Hmm, I don’t think I’ll buy the expansion because for probably 30$ I’m just getting a new class and a bit more.”
- Have you thought that maybe free time is precious? Why would I spend any money on a game that’s going to be soul-crushing grind that makes me question the meaning of my existence? If the game doesn’t teach you anything and if it’s not even fun, what’s the point? Are you going to tell your grandchildren about that time when you farmed 500 gold and 15k achievement points on a game that no longer exists?
As Zenith says… for $30 you can actually get FULL games which you might have more fun playing and which you might play longer than this expansion.
Example: I bought DayZ Standalone, which is a huge map online apocalypse game, that is continually getting new content (recently cars got added, before that a weather system, and in a while diseases will be added) for just $23.
To be honest they should add 2 weapons for those using single-handed. Ranger gets staff, necro gets greatsword, but mesmer should get more than just a OH shield and ele more than just a MH sword
My favorites:
- Warrior – Brawler – Staff: The Brawler will stand in your way, wherever you go: you shall not pass!
- Engineer – Tinkerer – Hammer: The Tinkerer will show you what he can do with a hammer, oh yeah, before I forget… it may look like a hammer but in truth… it’s a rocket launcher.
- Mesmer – Enchanter – Mace MH, Shield OH: Where the enchanter goes, his pets (aka. guildies) follow.
- Necromancer – Reaper – Greatsword: Dark streaks of sacrificial blood mark the Reaper’s path.
- Thief – Executioner – Axe MH, Axe OH: The Executioner is a harsher version of thief, who finishes his job with some less finesse, but he’ll do it with a precisely directed chop.
- Guardian – Can’t come up with a name – Longbow: The X will show you just how bad it can be, to get an arrow to the knee.
Ah and for ele… the spellsword suggested by runeblade seems cool.

No, its going to be 7.65 gb, so you should be OK.
Although of course between now and when its finally finished being programmed, designed and released, it may well change (higher or lower).
This is either a breach of the NDA or simply made up facts. Either way, it should not be posted on the forums.
Trolled :P
Here’s how money works for the casual community:
Do I have 500$ to go to the movies and eat out a bunch of times this quarter? I think I do. Do I have 30$ to buy a game/expansion that I’ll play for 100+ hours? No. No I do not.
Here’s how the online PC community works:
Can it be pirated? Not yet? Alright, then as far as I’m concerned it ain’t out yet.
Here’s how the modern 10 year old kid manages money:
Hey dad I HAVE to have this new Guild Wars 2 thing! [Easily obtains credit card / buys 20,000 gems / expansion not for sale yet / will bother dad again when it is / randomly gets new iPhone and a bunch of Minecraft swag for no reason]
And of course the avid forum goer:
30$? I don’t know ANet, might not be worth it. I still think you should give me my money back for the original GW2 because you did not fulfill X “promise” at Y time. I still want to play the game though. Hmm, 30$ is too rich for my blood. [Thinking inside: “Oh snap! I brought up money! They will totally listen to me now!”]
The WoW gamer:
Why don’t we have a sub fee yet?!
The adoring fan:
I have 20,000$ saved up just in case.
The PC master race guy:
I made a New Years resolution to only buy games that support DX12
The MLG-wannabe-Counter-Strike fellow:
It’s adding hang gliding which makes it an ArcheAge clone which makes it a WoW clone which makes it a COD clone IDONTWANTITGETITOUTOFMYFACE!
The grandma:
I bought Heart of Thorns and I bought Nightfall. My grandson says only Nightfall works. Why would they sell something that doesn’t work?
Are you god? Post… just… so beautiful. cry
This seems like archeage all over… nice copy cat work.
Tbh, they just need to nerf the dmg on rapid fire (not on longbow in general) and decrease the range of longbow to that of any normal long range weapon (1200), like elementalist staff.
Why exactly? If you are going to call for a nerf you need to provide an argument that holds water.
I think the arguments you are looking for are in this 5-page long thread.. to name a few:
- This is the only weapon+class that has such a far range and so much damage with it: it does not encourage strategic or skillful play, instead it encourages you to stand in your tower and shoot at enemies who have no alternative than to run out of your range.
Playing as a ranger it is actually amazing how little you hit with that if the people you shoot at move and have retaliation on … it also requires you to hop onto the wall and thus you become easy prey for mesmer, thief or necro pulls.
- Since no other class has this kind of range it’s poorly balanced. Counters are either speccing to counter one specific builds, or relying on high mobility to get out and in fast.
OK, then let’s burn thief because no other class has that much steal uptime and such high burst damage … Your reasoning is faulty. The dps from range is (a) rather unreliable unless you kind of don’t move and (b) the actual dps is quite low because of the cooldown and the auto-attack, despite many claims here, doesn’t hit hard. Never met a killshot warrior, I’d say – they only have 1.200 range but they do more damage than my channel LB 2 and they do it in one hit – so there’s no escaping by blocking or evading like my LB 2 that comes bit by bit and gives you time to react.
- Rapid fire is a broken skill since it does not stop firing when an enemy goes stealthed, and people who go full zerk can shoot you to death with just using that one skill.
Every channeling skill does – but I get what you want – instant kills without any risk. Since thieves still render far later than they become visible (in some cases they do not even render once) you’d be home safe … where, please, is that not broken, hm? Where does this require skill to hit an enemy who’s never able to target you?
Many more arguments all over the thread, but I think you get the gist. Range is too far which makes it unbalanced when compared with the high damage. Therefore: nerf.
Fun thing … all of a sudden thieves are dying while they had free reign before and now they go and cry nerf. How about nerfing stealth on thieves so that – once revealed – they cannot restealth for 8 seconds? Or how to penalize when attacking from stealth – like 20% damage reduction when attacking from stealth? And how about getting rid of initiative and have them be subject to cooldowns like every other class?
If you play a thief and get killed by rangers so often … finally l2p instead of relying on the absolutely unbalanced stealth/movement/damage combo from the most broken class I ever encountered. When I am around running a power LB build on my ranger most thieves survive the encounter and quite a few win them. So it’s maybe not ranger that is overpowered but maybe you who has possibly adopted a bit too much of a slack playstyle?
When people get more or less insta-killed by thieves everyone says: Well, how about running a bit more defense and not just a glass cannon? Same to you now … the only class that actually is in danger of getting killed by LB 2 is a thief glass cannon. So – do as you expect from all other classes – get some defense as well and live with the fact that you can no longer down enemies in under 5 seconds.
I barely play thief. The rapid fire bug is a common bug and is complained about by more than just thieves, since most groups run a thief for stealth rez alone.
Eye of the North – the only GW expansion we have ever seen:
no new classes
no new playable races
phew new maps but nothing close to the size of continent
maps had terrible textures
a little new skills
some new armor setsOnly expansion? What GW have you been playing? Factions and Nightfall were expansions bro.
Factions and Nightfall were stand-alone campaigns Brah. EoTN was a true xpac. check the wiki brah.
It’s not cause they can be played without having the base game that they aren’t expansions… they work on same engine, sync with eachother and continue on the same lore. That’s pretty much an expansion, even if you call it a “campaign”.
Also, sorry to offend all your dreams, oh almighty fanboi community. /sarcasm
I listed what I normally view as an expansion, based on previous experience, I am not asking you to accept that, but for god’s sake HoT looks like a regular, and pretty low content, patch.
(edited by Sirendor.1394)
^ Again, you seem to have all the details. Enlighten me.
Why do people keep saying 1 zone? Like wtf…
1) All the features they listed on HoT release page > the big ones. If any of the things I listed would be added, they would have listed those as a major feature.
2) Some uncertainty as to the size of the zone is there, yet they said 1 zone.

I totally agree with the OP.
What we get now:
- 1 new pvp mode
- 1 new class
- 1 new zone
- 0 new race
- 1 new wvw map
- 1 new game mode (GvG)
- obtainable non rng precursors (basically a fix for something that is broken)
- possibly new legendaries
- specialization trees (in most games these come through free DLC too or are already in the game at launch)
What a normal expansion gives:
- 2 or more new classes
- a complete continent of new zones
- 1 or more new races
- 5+ new dungeons
- several new pvp/rvr maps
- several new game modes
- several raids
- a huge amount of new skins accessible through game
- a huge amount of new skills
Conclusion:
To me, this so-called expansion seems a tidbit small for being called an expansion. For one a lot of the content that is being offered through it was promised at launch or in the months after launch to be added with normal (free) patches: guild halls, precursor hunt, GvG mode. The remainder is nearly negligible.
I know a lot of people are delighted with this announcement, but in truth those people just see content that should have been in the game a long time ago and for free. By now (my speculation is) the players have been spooned with irritating and bad patches so long, they crave for real content, and even a meagre release like this one will trigger their desire.
TLDR: Rip-off seems the better word over expansion.
one does not simply run full zerk on wvw
Unless you’re a crit thief, or a shatter mes, or a hammer warrior, or a meditation guard.
Tbh, they just need to nerf the dmg on rapid fire (not on longbow in general) and decrease the range of longbow to that of any normal long range weapon (1200), like elementalist staff.
How the hell is this gonna work? Players who pay get to play in new WvW, the others can go to hell??? How will this affect balance? What about population splitting? This seems a really bad idea if it’s going to be limited to players who buy the expansion only…

And isn’t anyone even a little upset about some of the things they’ve been promising us for years being stuck behind a pay wall?
True. Guild halls, GvG, precursor hunt… were all promised as a general feature which was gonna be free, in a feature patch.

They haven’t told us.
My guess is it won’t cost more than a new full game. So about $60/£40.
But that’s just a guess and I think it’s likely to be less than that. But personally I’d rather budget for more than I need and have some left over.
Most new full games cost 50 pounds… too much for an expansion that is, based on the stuff they told it gets, rather limited.
I would be satisfied with $20-30 max.
No, not yet.
I want to wait until more info gets released, I have a review or 2 of people who actually played it, and I see the initial reaction among people that have same mindset as me. Also, price is a consideration..
I am interested in the new class, new wvw borderland but the rest doesn’t really speak to my imagination.. and I would really have thought more than 1 class and at least 1 race would have been added in a paid expansion.
Q: How will you handle PvP for people who decide not to buy HoT? Will it not completely break the balance when you throw in a new class and unlocks for other classes and do not allow players only having access to base-game together? Will this divide the playerbase?

Okay… and what about WvW? Isn’t this totally going to break competition by locking out players who prefer not to purchase this expansion from playing new classes and/or specializing?
Seems a lot like you are forcing our hand here…
BRILLIANT. MOAAAR GOLEM.
I don’t play elementalist in WvW anymore, won’t play it after this nerf for sure.
- You rely on might-stacking for getting damage
- Your damage (with might) is the same than a warrior with 20+k HP and 3k armour
- You have access to a very low number of blocks/damage mitigation compared to other classes and have no stealth like thieves, mesmers, rangers and engineers.
- Your health and armour are very low, unless you go total bunker, which makes your damage redundant.
- The only really succesful trait set-up is something along the lines of 0-0-4-4-6. Running 6 in Arcane is pretty much a must, other options aren’t viable.
Why stop at 20? Why not eliminate leveling all together?
As this person says. What else is leveling than an illusion?
Think about it: what actually changes when you “level up”?
- The number on your experience bar.
→ What a change! The 9 changes into 10, the 10 changes into 11… ? - You can play in other maps.
→ But you could already do that before you were level 80 right? And people who like exploring still do it past level 80 right? - You can play dungeons.
→ Sadly, most people only play dungeons at level 80 anyways, and people who don’t match gear check level 80 full zerk 5-8-10k+ AP get kicked. - The name colour of your gear goes from blue to green to yellow to orange to purple.
→ Oh wait, they could just scrap gear tiers too, because they don’t particularly mean anything for anyone not playing Fractals. - You gain trait and skill points
→ Can easily be awarded through gameplay and in a large part already are obtainable either through a merchant or through completing challenges.
Levels mean nothing in themselves, they only serve as limiters for content. There are plenty of ways to do that without levels however.
Interesting.

Yes!!!!! That was MY legendary adventure!!!Nope. There is no exclusivity in that, nothing legendary about that etc.
That is why legendaries don’t have a meaning now.If legendaries would have some exclusiveness due to a hard process of making one game wise not only grind wise , GW2 would benefit a lot from people that like threating game more hardcore way and it’s needed for players to have a trophies with them.
Nothing more to add.
Those saying legendaries are fine where they are now are completely wrong, because there is, as Sept says, nothing legendary about them. There’s a big difference between hard (challenging, heroic, epic, truly achieving) and time-consuming (grindy, TP flipping, spamming 1 button in a zerg). I will take the heroic, scavenging epic quest over grinding gold in a champion train each and every time.
Do I have a legendary? No, because I don’t value something that requires you to give up your life in an “epic quest for 3000 gold” and that isn’t even fun.
It’s rather obvious at this point that World vs. World, while still fun, is not the game mode we pictured it to be years ago.
I personally thought: “Yay! A open-world like PvP mode, where guilds actually mean something!”. Boy, was I wrong.
World vs. World does not even resemble open world (1), at best it’s one single PvE map for Eternal battlegrounds, and another for the borderlands. The game mode is larger than SPvP, but it does not feel like you are in an existing world, it feels a lot like a construction, and immersion is not the feeling I get when playing in it.
Guilds (2) do not have the sort of control over the area as I imagined they would have. There is no building, and very little customizing: you can drop siege with a 1 hour timer, you can fortify walls and gates, but you cannot change structures in the way they look. You can’t get your guild a tower they would fight to defend at all costs. Instead, most of the time you see a large zerg coming from afar, look at the supply depot (70/100) and decide to just leave it because it’s not worth the time, effort and trouble… because you already know you will end up being slaughtered by a numerical superiority.
I am sure each of you, dedicated WvW player, newbie or something in between, has his own reasons for disliking what WvW is; be it the lack of balance between servers, the low customizability, the lack of immersion, the dominance of zergs, the small role of guilds, the small number of maps, the objectives etc etc
Do you think WvW needs to change. If yes, how would you change it?
Tabletop RNG? :O
Xillix has a point there. If their servers can’t handle it, it’s their duty to make that they can, we paid/pay them for an AAA game.
AoE limit removal would make the combat better, because now small groups (<5) can still be hit by everyone who attacks them, but they can’t retaliate on everyone who’s attacking them, thus making small groups a lot less effective than big ones. So Aoe Cap removal will kill a lot of zergs.
Gear treadmill inc….
Seriously though… GEAR TIERS MAKE NO DIFFERENCE.
This is what it comes down to:
- tier 1 has numbers
- shiny new monsters are introduced that have higher numbers than you!
- you grind tier 2 with bigger numbers, you feel like a boss
- shiny new monsters with even more numbers are introduced!
- you grind tier 3 gear with… more numbers, you can now kill the shiny new monsters but you get bored after a day.
Repeat this sequence and add more numbers. Before you know we all have 15k power and deal the same damage as before, because guess what… the mobs have gained more numbers too.
You only THINK you are making progress to “getting stronger”, but in fact a math-loving economist is eating your brains.
Who wants levels going back to 20? ~a million hands raised~
Who wants level cap to be raised? ~people throw bricks~
Or you know they could just… use guilds? Lol. Who cares about balance, it isn’t there now, sure as hell won’t exist ever. But I really like idea of every guild for his own… our 5-man guild raids will be glorious. :p
Oh and alliances = guild + guild + guild
Waw, that’s pretty beautiful, what do you paint with?
Awesome. /15chars
It’s the new LS season. It will be as usual low quality low quantity, but they will present it in a way that we will have to pay each episode 200 gems. Connect won’t deblock it automatically.
lmao if that’s the ‘great’ announcement at PAX people will burn the place down.
“We are going to release the same stuff as before, but now you have to pay for it! Isn’t that great!

Yes and no.
Yes: I expect Heart of Thorns to be the same living story crap.
No: I don’t expect ArenaNet to SAY it’ll be the same stuff, but now with a price tag. Instead I expect ArenaNet to hype it up (like they are doing right now) and make people think that it IS something better than Living Story… which on hindsight it will probably not be.So… living story with a pricetag is very likely. Sorry if I sound like a pessimist, but if there’s one impression I have gotten it’s that we should not trust ArenaNet to become good developers all of a sudden after:
- The lies of the manifesto; no grind best joke ever… this game is incredibly grindy
- The neglecting of World vs. World; fall 2012 -> spring 2014; spring 2014 -> now
- Edge of the mists; not even a wvw map, the people who play on it are PvE players
- The forcing of people into SPvP and desperate attempts at making it an Esports
- The lie of craftable precursors and scavenger hunt
- All the hideous promises: “soon”, “when it’s ready”, “we’re working on it”, “nothing is off the table”
- The addition of things PEOPLE DID NOT ASK FOR and the ignoring of brilliant suggestions of many people
- The CDI project: an obvious means of hushing the players and acting as if they were listening to us.
- The horrible trait locks of the september New player experience
- The so-called Living Story that was supposedly “an expansion’s worth of content”
I have not forgotten yet, ArenaNet. Have you?
If they do this I hope the place burns down.
Please don’t do this anet
I sincerely hope I am wrong. Can always regain my trust. GW1 was one of my favorite games ever… and it was made by ArenaNet, and it was also the main reason I bought GW2.
Ah I have the same problem. I picked a random name at the time because I didn’t have any characters made in the game itself yet, so was still coming up with those… would really like a way to change names.
I remember way before the game ever launched (around time of betas) some guy somewhere (an anet guy) said that this would become possible a few months into the game… and it would be through the forums…

Idk if this is any help, but here are some 3-man specs, we run on lower tier roaming/zerg wiping.
1) Tanky Tanky
- Dps warri [0-0-6-2-6] -> crowd control and dps
- Condi warri [0-6-6-2-0]-> keep the dots on, use stances to mitigate
- Medi guard [2-0-6-6-0]-> burst + sustain
Dps and control will keep you alive. You are fast and you are resilient, but you can still focus down most any other groups, your limits on groups will be 10-15. Each of you has the ability to mitigate damage:
- The dps warrior can use his gs to evade regularly, endure pain to become undamageable during the hot of the battle and hammer stuns to control those who are high dps and finish them first. On top of that, should need arise, you can back off very fast through the GS rush and bull’s charge. Similarly you can be upon an enemy in a blink.
- The condi warrior, while being the least mobile of the group, has the highest armour, vitality and overall defence. He also can help out his friends using Battle standard, timing it carefully. Stances are his main way of surviving, yet do not waste them unless you are about to take a lot of dmg. Also don’t activate multiple the same time, that’s a total waste unless you are being assailed by players throwing lots of condi, raw damage AND CC on you. If this is the case, you won’t last either way so you have to take them out or get out. For this player it might be hard to extract from a fight.
- Finally the Meditation guard is an incredibly strong spec (both on the defensive as the offensive) for roaming. He is a valuable asset for this team, healing at the right time, area blinding foes and blocking whenever he’s in danger through Shelter, focus 5 and Renewed Focus. The meditation guard has some incredible sustain, and will still take out targets very fast.
2) Sneaky Sneaky
- Any mesmer -> distract and dps
- Crit thief [d/p – d/d or s/d]-> eliminate targets with low health
- Condi thief -> keep those dots on
This team will mainly work on stealth, distraction and killing large groups through continued attack and retreat, scatter and wipe. The roles of the players should be pretty clear, and the tactics are simple; each of you tries to offset the enemy by vanishing whenever you’re being focused. In turn you will pick off the enemy group one by one. Players will try to save their buddies, focus on the survivors, rinse and repeat. The main defense here will be stealth, that also means AoE is your biggest enemy. Try to stay in the clear, where you don’t have to fight in limited quarters.
3) Bursty spec
- Shatter mes [6-0-4-0-4]
- Burst ele
- Anything that is heavy damage paired with decent mitigation (e.g. the zerk warrior or meditation guard will fit perfectly in this role)
The last spec I really like is one where your victory lies in the element of surprise and consequently swift execution of the enemy. If they manage to recover from the initial surprise, you either push harder or you slip away using the mesmer’s stealth, then bomb them again. So what you want to do is burst down foes in quick succession and hope it is enough, if it’s not… repeat and enjoy. ;D
Sorry, it turned out pretty long, I have given some suggestions as to traits/gear/skills but of course it’s up to you and your mates’ preferences. Also there’s certainly a place for other classes to shine as 4th or 5th player, for example engineers for condi, heal, cc. Rangers and necros are sadly not the best in this area of the game, due to lack of aoe dmg on rangers and lack of mobility on necros. Good players can of course mitigate this through strategic use of abilities.

Rid regular xp from wvw, eotm. Add tomes. —> way less low lvl leveling. Players will come with high levels to earn tomes
Brilliant. <3
Jack Sparrowcart
please dont make them tradable… people will overprice them and abuse it as a new way of “power” leveling.
You can use it on new chars for key farming
or on a alt
if you are lvl 75 and you only have a few tomes it can be used as a boost to lvl 80 like a finishing rush.ToK when used on a lvl 80 give you a skill point. Just like that scroll we keep getnig from champ boxes…but nobody seems to be complaining about those now
Well making tomes tradeable won’t be that bad. After all, the current way of leveling up really fast is buying up crafting supplies and crafting to 80. I have done it multiple times cause I can’t stand the level grind.
If prices of ToK get “Extremely high” as you suggest, people won’t buy them because crafting will then be cheaper (15g average for 8 levels – chef costs only 5g, jeweling ~10g) and people will just go back to crafting for powerleveling. If that happens, sellers will have their hand forced to sell them cheaper, so they can still profit.
Say, 2g per tome sounds okay… that’s 160g for level 80. A lot people already have plenty of the level 20 scrolls so they’ll only need 60 levels = 120g. Most people do cheap crafts such as chef or jeweling so they get to 35 levels = 70g. I’d buy them immediately.
It looks interesting, but somehow I can’t shove off the feeling that this will be another disappointment and hyping up people with awesome looking trailers and then when it hits, the actual content is not even worth the name “content”.
Most of the last living story episodes I just completed cause I wanted the armour skins, got through them in 1 hour tops and didn’t repeat. Wintersday was a total letdown, same old content again.
If they make this a paying expansion, I doubt I’d even buy it unless there’s new playable races/classes/PvP modes.. or anything of the kind.
If it’s a continuation of boring living story but behind a paywall… no thanks, cause it’s simply not worth it.
If it’s a hype up for living story that is still free, /care.
Lady what are you talking about?? Where can we get more?
Zero progress. Very disappointed. GW1 was so much better with the expansions.
1\ Revert the traits.
2\ Give tome of knowledge for every story instance completed.
3\ Nothing more to add.
NO. If you weren’t bored leveling from level 20 to 80 already.. you’re sure to be now. OP you are now officially a no-life korean grind lover.
+1 once more… pls let us use the tomes to level our alts, because we can’t play alts in wvw… they are no match to level 80s
I dont want more ,“you %&$#ing nub 222222 ranger!” whispers from d/p thieves! If i go roam they always whisper me, but just that kind of thieves, nobody else
Hahaha. Well there must be reason they whisper that to you… Are you by any chance a 2222222 PEWPEWPEWPEWPEW ranger? If so… I totally understand the thieves, because that build is broken.
LOL>? There are people with too many tomes of knowledge? How do you get so many wtf. The most tomes I ever had at one point is 10 and I just used them on my current character… Pls make tomes of knowledge easier to get.
Waw I did not know there were so many ranger defenders here. :P
1- GG trying to deny what I say because my former guild was called Troll Society because we trolled enemies in WvW. Don’t play the man, play the ball.
2- I have nothing against ranger per se, I just do not like that the only viable thing is condi bunker or pewpewpewpewpewpew + autoattack.
Trust me, I applaud positive changes to ranger. The class was boring and very underpowered before, but making a class irritating beyond measure is not a step in the right way. Just nerf the longbow and I’ll be happy. There is no class that can deal so much damage from so far away with so little risk to your own. It’s just bad game design.
