GW1 Winds of Change and GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

I recently began to reminisce on my time playing GW1, and how fun that game was. I was looking back at the storylines and events, and came across the Winds of Change arc. Anet had said previously that the Winds of Change story sets the stage for Guild Wars 2. After 3 years, I’m wondering how and when the GW1 story will coincide with GW2.

Winds of Change was set primarily in Cantha. It showed the events years after the Shiro arc of Factions. It was a great story to play through. But the connection to GW2 ends there, as we all know that Cantha was removed from Tyrian lore entirely. Divinity’s Reach even had a Canthan district, before it was turn into the Great Collapse. As popular as that world was, it was decided that it didn’t fit into the direction of GW2. The slight ray of hope remains, as Anet introduced teasers that the Zephyrites visit Cantha on a regular basis, before Mordremoth blew them out of the sky to get to Glint’s eggs.

My question to GW1 fans who played this storyline: Has anyone noticed anything in GW2 that has a connection to the Winds of Change? Are there any types of reference or NPC relationship to characters played in the Winds of Change arc?

I’ve been looking into Marjory’s character background, as she’s the only Canthan main character in the Living Story world. I hoped to find some connections that could tie her to Reiko or Miku, but I’ve come up empty.

This is AWESOME! Anet does it again with the immersion into lore! Mordremoth is speaking to his minions telepathically, making perfect sense why we as other races can’t hear what sylvari hear. Then went we face him, we’ll only hear growls, where as sylvari can’t understand his words.

Anet, please do more lore specific stuff like this in the future! This is exactly what this game needs!

[Suggestion] Bring back 1-time events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

I can understand that coding events do take precious time away from Devs. But what I’m wondering is why there seems to be hate for the idea of Anet trying to please a segment of their player base? Again, this game is mostly Casual friendly. The dedicated, Hardcore player base is getting Raids, I understand. But unique 1-time events would be Open World, and anyone who logs in at that time can participate. The only prerequisite to this is that they need to be on when it happens. This by no means discriminates between Casuals and Hardcores. The only thing that separates the two would be that Hardcores will arrange their real life schedules to make it: i.e. taking vacation days, finding a babysitter, stocking up on snacks, reschedule anniversary dinners (yes I’ve done this, God Bless my wife).

To use a real life example, think of 1-time events like having free tickets to the Super Bowl or the World Cup finals. The game doesn’t repeat over and over (DVRing don’t count). You can’t ask the teams to play again simply because you couldn’t make it. If you make it to the game, you get the great feeling of “being there”. You get unique rewards, like rushing the field and taking the game ball home when no one is looking. If you don’t make it to the game, life goes on, and you can hear about from your friends.

[Suggestion] Bring back 1-time events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Ok, a lot of people have some resentment for the Ancient Karka event. But these people are making a common mistake. They’re letting the negative feelings of the bugs and disconnections distract from how epic the actual event was. From start to finish, it was a fun filled time. All the Devs took the time to play with us on the many server maps.

Now onto other topics of concern. There are some who feel that 1-time events exclude players. Well yes, that’s the point of the event. If you’re dedicated enough to plan ahead to participate, you’re rewarded handsomely. These events are like in-game bonuses that don’t affect the story or the economy. There can, or perhaps should be, some permanent world change to showcase said event. Something like a broken tower as a reminder of the huge battle that took place. Even something as minor like the Ancient Karka becoming part of the environment.

This suggestion is merely a way to give dedicated players something to enjoy. 90% of this game is Casual friendly. Events that cater to the 1%ers is just a way for Anet to give back.

[Suggestion] Bring back 1-time events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

I’m a player who longs for the days when we had special events for the community. I remember fondly of the Ancient Karka event that only happened once, and lasted for hours. It was one chained event after another, and ended with with a permanent change to the world by way of the remains of the lava cooked karka in Southsun. This is exactly what this game needs now more than ever.

With all the changes made to the game over the years, everything leans towards a more Casual friendly MMO. While there’s nothing wrong with that, us dedicated players want more. We want hard content that push us to our limits. We want unique rewards that can’t be received any other way. And we want events that happen only once, with rewards for players willing to take the time away from real life to play it.

This suggestion isn’t about being Elitist. It isn’t about being a Special Snowflake. This is about diversifying this game so it satisfies all sorts of players. The 1% are people too. There are players willing to take week long vacations from work just to lead their servers in WvW. There are players willing to spend 16 hours straight to learn a raid-like event. Why not throw out content for the hardcore players every now and then?

How it would work

  • Anet could announce a month or 2 in advance that a one-off event will occur at a specific time, on a specific date. That gives us proper notice to rearrange our real life schedules. Put in a vacation request, buy snacks, etc.
  • It would be Open World, as to not leave anyone out while the event happens.
  • Rewards should be high end, Account Bound, and deliciously pretty looking.
  • To prevent losses due to disconnections, reward structures should give tokens after every mini event. This way, there’s a lot less chance that someone won’t miss out on an “end chest”. Have a merchant available for 24 hours in LA that offers goods for players to purchase with the special tokens.
  • Tokens can only be given out to players who actually participate. If you AFK, or don’t do enough damage to certain mini bosses, you don’t get rewards. This forces players to play the event, and makes AFKing a bad idea. Tagging events wouldn’t work either, as the attacks wouldn’t meet reward thresholds based on damage.
  • To further prevent AFKers, a shortened “kick timer” should be implemented on the event map.
  • Special titles and Achievement Points should be given out, depending on participation levels.

Microtransaction opportunity

While there will be people who won’t be able to attend the event, but would like to play it, Anet could sell special 1-time use “Event Mission” unlocks in the Gem Store. For 4,000 Gems, a player can unlock the event on the map, albeit on a smaller scale with smaller rewards. That helps retain the status of the original event. This way, players willing to pay the price will get a taste of the event, all while helping to increase revenue for NCSoft. The high price is justified because one “Event Mission” is for all players on the map.

I love RNG!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

RNG is fun! RNG is life! If RNG were a tangible object, I would roll around in it like an excited puppy. Anet needs to bring out more Black Lion Key sales, because my stack of chests is lonely.

People at times can get frustrated by their luck. But I’m here to tell you that the frustration exists only because you expect have luck on your side. The secret to enjoying RNG is to just let her be. Embrace the unknown, and when she blesses you with a desired outcome, the feelings of bliss are amplified to a degree that no mere word can describe.

RNG is the ultimate equalizer. There is no skill involved. Everyone’s luck is the same. Roll a 6-sided die, and you have the same chances of getting a 1, as you do a 6.

Lastly, RNG is forever “new content”. When you’ve done all there is to in this game, RNG will always be there to give you something to do. Open Champ bags. Open BL Chests. Throw swords into the Mystic Forge. If Anet were to ever stop producing content, RNG will still be there to support you, like an ever loyal companion.

Please share your love of RNG too while I fix myself another drink!

God Bless you Anet. You’re the reason America is great.

The truth is out there.

If you think about it. RNG is just an internal coding for the mechanic being used (i.e. Mystic Forge). If a new patch comes out, and breaks something, it could cause the RNG “coding” to possibly repeat itself, thus allowing for god-like luck.

[Suggestion] Time to reformat WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

Hello my fellow WvWers. After 3 years of some pretty interesting matches, I’ve come to the conclusion that the current format for WvW just doesn’t work. The population in the tiers we have now are not enough to sustain a long term 3-way battle. As you go down in tiers, you’ll find that there’s always going to be that one server who walks the fine line between being too overpowered in the lower tier, and just not strong enough in the upper tier. To fix this (and to keep this game fresh), I’d like to propose a complete overhaul to our beloved game. I suggest changing the format into a 4-way all out brawl.

With the new tiers, here’s how it would look:

  • Tier 1 – JQ / BG / TC / YB
  • Tier 2 – SoS / FA / SBI / Magswag
  • Tier 3 – CD / HoD / NSP / Ebay
  • Tier 4 – DB / DH / SF / BP
  • Tier 5 – AR / SoR / GoM / Kaineng
  • Tier 6 – IoJ / Fergie / ET / DR

How does this work? Simple. You make completely new maps, and have server teams start in their far corners. Shape the map like a square or a cross, then have teams fight for objectives towards the center. After HoT is released, there’ll be plenty of Devs to start working on this.

PROS

  • Dynamic map politics. Who should we attack first? Should be double team someone? Should we back cap while the other three are distracted? The options are endless here!
  • Fresh outlook on game. We’re all pretty burnt out on the same map for 3 years. Even with a new map coming soon, that’ll just be in rotation. And it’s only a single map. Change the maps and format, and it’s like we got a whole new game for free!
  • Balance. By the looks of the mockup of tiers, it would seem like a more balanced fight.

CONS

  • Not everyone plays WvW exclusively. Development time to switch formats wouldn’t be justified by cannibalizing other teams to fix WvW. Anet has to worry about PvE and the E-Sports SPvP too.
  • Triple teaming a server would lead to too many tears. If multiple servers really hate you, they can focus that one server so hard, that people may quit altogether.

There has been debate in the past as to where Precursors might drop. Well, I’ve discovered scientific evidence that anything and everything that drops loot, can drop a Precursor.

Just me and 2 other guys attacking SWT in YB BL. Doing our normal killing the guards and dropping Rams. Well, I saw a shiny image scroll past my eyes when I auto-looted. I looked in my bag as I was running to grab supply, and RNG blesses me with Tooth of Frostfang. To double check, I looked at my loot log, and confirms that the Tower Guard NPC we cleared dropped it.

So why is it free to watch at then today from most of NY as a symbol of hope and greatness? Would this not basically mean that hardcore people aim to be the statue of liberty, with people watching their trinkets, flaring up the show off and elitism debatte again?

Would it not be much more hardcore to hide it behind a wall and let people do a hard army drill course to reach it and see the symbol of freedom, with drill seargants(hardcore enthusiasts) yelling at people falling behind(casuals), or at the old(people with disabilities or just older people), tired(those coming home from work for a little relaxation) and the homeless(people without guild support)?
Nobody would give a rat´s bottom about the statue of liberty if it was hidden behind a hard to beat content wall, all you have to do is pay a little fee for transport to the isle.

Not taking away from the heroism of the people you mentioned, but it is also common sense to overbear the attacker if you could be next on his shooting list. Of course not everybody would have done this, and their grantings of the highest order of courage from the hands of the French President is well deserved. Also one of the guys was a soldier and so probably more used to weapons, the other guys had simply admirable boatloads of courage.

Because with greatness, there comes choice. The choice to sit down and do nothing. The choice to go forth and do great things. America, as the shepherd of freedom, grants the people the choice of Easy Mode or Hard Mode.

The Statue of Liberty is for all to see. For Americans to bask in her glory. For the immigrants who dream of a better life. The beautiful sight of this symbol of freedom, given as a gift from our French allies, brings tears to my eyes. Let her inspire you to greatness from the river banks (Easy Mode). Or hike up the stairs to her crown (Hard Mode).

America, much like Guild Wars 2, gives you the choice to choose your destiny. She embraces all player types. From the Casual gamer who seeks free stuff (3rd B-day gift), to the Hard Core gamers looking for a challenge (Troll’s Revenge), to everyone in between.

Excuse me for a moment. I need to grab some tissues. America’s and Anet’s greatness filled me with so much pride, that my eyes started to water.

So according to that reasoning, it was hard to build(hard mode) and is bound to become free as it had been build for everyone(easy mode). That would mean that the hardcore mode is only a mean to achieve the easy mode for everyone. The statue of liberty was not hard to build because it was that people wanted it to be hard to build, it was hard to build because the circumstances were grim. There are no grim circumstances in GW2, making the really hardcore mode unnecessary.

Actually, the Statue of Liberty was inspired by America’s greatness. The Frenchmen who came up with the idea saw America’s exceptionalism (Hard Mode), and wanted to be a part of it. So in turn, America inspired the French to do great things (their own Hard Mode).

Fast forward to today, and it was 3 Americans who saved the French people from a terrorist attack on a train. One almost lost a limb (Hard Mode) attempting to subdue the attacker.

Give me your tired, your poor,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

That´s written on the statue of liberty, which itself was a free gift from France.

And if memory of history serves, it was actually hard for the statue to become a reality. In fact, America almost failed to secure the base needed. So this discussion is perfect for this thread, as the Statue of Liberty can be an analogy for why we need Hard Mode. Nothing great in life comes easy.

Communism is indeed a system meant to create an “easy” life for the people. The government controls all aspects of the market to provide the basic needs of the people, ensuring no need for “hard content”.

But while people are satisfied with an easy life, the people who work hard achieve much greater successes in life. Which is why America the beacon of hope to many. We are Hard Mode, and we like it.

With around 5 million copies of GW2 sold, even with a small percentage of active players, there’s still a lot of people. If a lot of those players stopped playing, their toons remain. 1 dye out of how many? How many 3 years could one have to do to get them all if it is random past the selection of which kit? Or even if it’s not.

Some new players are likely willing to open up their real life pocket book to buy the dyes or spend hours farming the gold to get it. Or a combination of the two.

I highly doubt it’s the end of the luxury dye market.

If the dyes aren’t available at all except through the 3rd year birthday gift, eventually the markets for these dyes will dry up anyway once the supply runs out. So in the end, it’s probably a moot point which will kill the market first, price drops due to the birthday gifts or just supply being completely bought out.

I’d really hate to derail this thread by turning into an economic lesson, so I’ll simplify my response without a wall of text.

Luxury goods are high priced but slow moving markets. Supply is low, and Demand is high because some of these dyes are the best in the game. Only people with a lot of Gold can afford to purchase these goods. With Anet giving out free access to such luxury goods, you kill the exclusivity, which kills Demand. People like me who were about to buy certain dyes for personal use, now remove that potential transaction from the market. Why pay 1k Gold when I can get the same thing for free many times over due to many 3 y/o toon slots. So what if there’s only 1 dye left in the world. If the millions of players who potentially wanted it now have it unlocked for free, that lone dye loses all appeal, and just sits there. So again, the market is still alive for dyes, just not for the luxury prices they once were.

Back on topic, each and every one of my alts will be getting this lovely gift. Anet just proved to me why spending so much money on Gems was worth it. This company knows how to redeem itself in a glorious way.

Nah. There are too many players who haven’t gotten the dyes vs the rate of players hitting their 3 year birthday. New players may not want to wait 3 years to get a dye. Or if the selection of the exact dye is still RNG based, they may not get the dye they want. And the dyes are account bound so it won’t affect the price that way.

On the opposite end to that, new players can’t afford to pay 1k Gold for a dye. Which is why I said RIP luxury dye market. Dyes will still be sold, yes. But it won’t hit such high prices due to the free account bound selection.

A question to our community at large

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

Honestly, there is no issue. If players find a way to quickly do content, they’ll lean on a build. So if the new meta is to have 5 Longbow/Greatsword Rangers run a dungeon, our party won’t accept anything less. It’s nothing against you as a player. It’s all about efficiency.

Metas come and go. Anet does rebalancing to keep the game fresh. But players evolve and discover new builds, and thus a new meta is born. If you don’t want to deal with a pug group forming a meta build, then simply grab your friends and make your own party, with your own builds.

The game doesn’t force you to conform to our liking. WE force you to conform to our liking. Certain parties will have restrictions on what they want. Just like how an employer will have requirements for a position they’re hiring for. If you don’t meet the qualifications, you don’t get the job. Doesn’t matter if you have a PhD in Astrophysics if you can’t drive a forklift that the construction foreman needs. Hopefully my real world analogies help you understand.

[Suggestion] Higher Tarrktun Achievements

Smooth Penguin.5294

Hello. My name is Penguin, and I’m addicted to Tarrktun.

While there have been threads previously that warned about the risks involved with the Ecto Gamble, I haven’t seen much love for this little skritt. I admit that I’m completely in love with this new mechanic Anet introduced to the game. I’m estimating that I’ve spent close to 30,000 Gold on buying Globs of Destabilized Ectoplasm. Double clicking those buggers all day long and watching my inventory fill with merchant fodder puts a twinkle in my eye. But I digress. While there’s an achievement connected to this wonderful skritt, the Legendary Tarrktun Supporter, I feel there needs to be more.

Using only 100 Globs of Destabilized Ectoplasm is enough to max this achievement. But what about the players who crave more? 200 Globs? 500 Globs? Heck, some even using 1,000 Globs. I suggest that Anet add more layers to the achievement, and even consider a special title for those who are truly deserving: The Shiniest of Shinies

I say Anet should allow players to mount each other. It could lead to combo attacks!

Outfit Discussion

I think it’s absolutely WONDERFUL that Anet is releasing more gender centric Outfits. Female charr have been on the short end of the stick when it came to sharing male versions of outfits. With the datamined Wedding Outfit, now charr RPers can walk down the aisle feeling like the princesses they are.

Since we’re all patiently waiting for HoT to be released, we should really discuss a pressing matter. A lot of players have been reaching End Game and now have time to focus on looks. Anet should take this opportunity to bring out more options for us players to dress up our toons. Outfits are the answer, as they fit on any armor weight class, and are fully functioning in battle. The more Outfits Anet releases, the more Gems players will spend to purchases them.

But hark, we can go a few steps further. In addition to more Outfits, Anet should program some accessory options for players. Visible rings. Necklaces. Hats that don’t remove a toon’s hair. Capes. Maybe something to ride on. All these things would make the Gem Store a fun shopping experience.

Last, but not least, please consider Outfits for our Mini Pets!!!

Wedding Dress on humans - How Garters Work

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Smooth Penguin.5294

Friends, Romans, Charrs…

As far as I can tell the wedding dress hasn’t been put in the gemstore yet, and so I would like to point out a small problem prior to launch…

This is not how garters work.

The purpose of a garter is to hold up socks or stockings. Garters are itchy and while sexy they tend to look pretty silly unless they are also serving their initial purpose. (For more information, click here)

Which brings us to the issue at hand.

The female human wedding outfit does not include stockings and yet the dress is cut high enough to reveal a garter. I am requesting a fix by either removing the garter or adding the stocking.

Thank you.

I don’t think you’re old enough to fully understand the ceremonial act of tossing the garter at a wedding. Traditionally, the bride’s garter is filled with money, and the groom will toss it to the single men.

In most all cases, the bride is placed sitting on a chair surrounded by the wedding party. The groom will go on his knees, and attempt to remove the garter with his mouth from under the dress. If you’d like to learn more, go to YouTube, and do some searches. The act looks naughty, but it’s truly an adult tradition.

[Suggestion] Player Stacking combos

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

With HoT coming, there are a lot of new mechanics coming out. This would be a good time to introduce another fight mechanic. Right now, Combo Fields enable groups to get secondary buffs that help in combat. For example, blasting a fire field will grant Might to everyone. Well after playing some other games that have combos, it lead me to the idea of Player Stacking combos.

Imagine yourself fighting the Shadow Behemoth. Everyone is standing around and shooting at the head. Well, what if you could mount one of your friends, and combine your powers to do more damage? I’m attaching an image from a player named Swiftpaw. His illustration is exactly what this game needs.

Granted, not all races could use this new mechanic. Mounting an asura with a norn would probably call for negative combat modifiers. But on the opposite end to that, you could mount a norn with a human, and then have an asura mount the human for a totem pole attack. Then having that stack mount a charr could unleash some special type of attack, and award an achievement! I’ll attach another pic as an example.

Trading Post Speculation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

I’m a relatively “end-game” player. Roughly 5400 hours have seen me crossing and re-crossing Tyria.

Recently, I’ve been looking to get or build my second legendary, The Incinerator.

Here’s my point; I could easily choose to buy the gems and buy the pretty dagger. The problem isn’t finance it’s the principle of the thing. Speculation has driven the price to something like 300 USD.

That’s just insulting. So, I gameplay for the money. It’s slower, but I don’t feel like I’m being ripped off.

So, ANET loses the money from that transaction. I’d spend 100 USD for a vanity item, but 300 is just beyond the pale for a video game.

In high school history class we would have called this a case of “elastic demand.”

My suggestion; ANET should cap trading post prices to nerf speculation. This will ultimately increase micro transactions and serve the game by keeping prices reasonable.

Hiya. My suggestion is that once you get to college, take some Micro and Macro Economics. I don’t know if it’s mandatory at all colleges, but if it isn’t, it should be. These two classes help teach students the basics of the Law of Supply, the Law of Demand, Shifts and Movements, and other core concepts of the market economy.

Now onto your argument. There are a lot of assumptions you’re making that aren’t accurate. I’ll break them down:

  • 1) Not many people buy large quantities of Gems to convert to Gold. This is due to how the Gem Conversion ratios work. If a lot of people did this, the Gold to Gem rates would be much much much lower.
  • 2) Not many people buy Legendary weapons directly from the TP. A lot of people will buy Precursors and then make their own.
  • 3) Speculation isn’t what drives the prices of luxury goods. It’s Supply and Demand. There’s too much risk in investing in Precursors to profit, seeing as how Precursor crafting is coming. One of my Precursor’s value dropped by 35%, and I ended up selling it cheap just to get it out of my bank.
  • 4) You’ve come up with a solution to your problem, not the economy’s. You want a luxury good that you can’t afford, so you wish to have the price lowered. Fair enough. But in doing so, you’ll wreck the marketplace. The Trading Post is a self contained entity that’s ever moving 24/7. Players can buy and sell goods at prices they see fit. By putting artificial caps on prices, you want Anet to fully control the market, and turn the TP into a glorified merchant. This school of thought is what brought down the Soviet Union. The global economy is in a good place at the moment, so there’s no real need to mess with it.

Dyes - Gamble & Flipping Market

Gambles don’t always lead to profit. Take a look at what they did to Monocles in the past. It was re-released, and the values dropped 90%.

I am sorry but my guild was having its weekly manipulation-workshop the other day and in honor of Exclusivity Month, which Tin Foil [Hats] holds every year in August in anticipation of Anniversary Week, we discussed several concepts and action plans to express our exclusivity while making a gold coin or two.

While we have always been a bunch of super-wealthy know-it-alls, whose primary goals were to get super wealthy and manipulate markets in order to make the overall gaming experience for casuals and veterans alike as dislikeful as possible, we have also started to rp.

To distinguish ourselves from casuals and non hardcore veterans, we invented new looks for our mains that on one hand use skins and dyes that are limited, so they are easily manipulated with the unlimited gold supply we have, and on the other hand, show how awesome and amazing we are.
Once we established. which skins and dyes we want to use, we bought up all remaining supply, not to resell them with a profit but to make the mayority of the supply unavailable to all the casuals and noncore veterans, which we deem unworthy to even apply to join our exclusive, amazing and awesomely super wealthy club of gentlemen.

I’m still waiting for you to review my guild application. I want to jump in and help with the dye purchasing so I, too, can make some Gold.

This is a follow up to the situation on TC. The same person who Anet Devs promised us would be perma-banned is back from his 4th suspension. Troll seige, troll food, and Supply draining with a graveyard of Ballistas and Trebs in our Keep’s courtyard. We’ve also confirmed that this person does the same thing on JQ.

The thing that gets some of us mad isn’t the fact that the same troll bothers us while we’re having good open field fights. The worst part of all this is that we feel Anet just doesn’t care to take our complaints seriously. Sure Anet suspends this guy. But he keeps coming back and does the same stuff over and over until his next suspension. Devs promised he and all his alt accounts would be taken care of the next time it happens, but that was just another temporary suspension. For someone who doesn’t care if he’s banned or not, a suspension is a joke.

People who know me on the forums can attests that I’m the whitest of the knights here. I support Anet because I loved GW1, and I love GW2. But no matter how much I love the sword swinging Colin, I’m having a hard time defending Anet’s attention to WvW. Never did I think I’d see the day that Anet truly made me a sad penguin.

PvE/WvW/PvP players thoughts on cost of WTS?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Smooth Penguin.5294

Smooth Penguin.5294

One of Mike and Colin’s dream was to have GW2 become the next big E-Sport MMO. While I think GW2 SPvP is ok, it’s not as epic as the GW1 Hall of Heroes PvP. There was more variety in GW1 HoH, and that made it a very popular competition. Add to that we also had structured GvG in GW1.

Having said that, Anet does put up money and resources into the current competition. Some of that comes from sponsors, so it’s not just Anet/NC Soft footing the entire bill. Do I think Anet is wasting money on the tourneys? Nah. The prize pool amount is small compared to the earnings Anet brings NC Soft, so there’s no real risk to the company’s bottom line. However, this is a double edge sword. GW2 E-Sports is not as popular as some other games, thus there’s less players participating. Less players competing means the same people who compete will most likely be the same ones who win or place high in the rankings each and every time.

The following needs to be done in order to expand GW2’s popularity and justify this game as E-Sports:

  • 1) We need more SPvP variety. Capture the flag, King of the Hill, etc. Heck, GW1’s 3-way HoH made the game kitten fun.
  • 2) Better rewards in SPvP
  • 3) GvG. GvG mode is a must.
  • 4) Cantha. Because Alliance Battles were a fun PvP alternative.

In closing, people need to remember this: NC Soft is the one who controls the purse-strings. I would love to see more attention to WvW, to QA, even allowing Devs time to interact with the community on the forums while on the clock. Putting up $100,000 on an E-Sport competition is fine. NC Soft can afford to put up another $100,000 to hire two or three more Devs.
