It’s obvious just from the blog article. Skill points are currently used as miyani currency, and for unlocking skills. Since unlocking skills is now covered by a different system, skill points are just becoming a new currency in the wallet that buys all the things they already buy.

better smaller variation than imaginary variation… when you have 13 traits from which 5 is useless, 3 is good, but don’t fit any build and the rest is taken with very small differences, it’s not a real variation… I will rather have less but more impactful choices which are all useful for someone, just in different ways

removing options does not give you more impactful options, thats the big illogical jump people keep making.

say you have 10 dates to choose from
5 of them cancel

are the 5 left somehow better than before?

That’s not what’s happening. It’s more like, you have 10 dates to choose from. Your friends point out that 8 of them are neo-kittens, and suggest two new ones. You now have only four to choose from, but they’re better than what you had before.

I’m surprised by how little people value the idea of taking a third grandmaster trait.

That’s because ANet did a terrible job at balancing them. Many are greatly outclassed by Adept traits.

If that was the case, the meta wouldn’t gravitate between a half handful of builds for each profession. It’s not about the builds themselves, but also the content you use them for that unevenly promotes certain strategies. Stacking dps in a team is more effective than stacking support and cc, for example, given the current available content.

Current builds focus on damage from stats, and CC from skills. If there were a stat that improved CC effectiveness I’ll bet it would see use.

The problem is some stuff you can’t do again with a character.
For example, let’s say you get Mastery Point for finishing your Personal Story or completing the World Map, a player shouldn’t be punished for having it complete already and be forced to create a new char just for that while a newer player that was still finishing it will get the reward much easier.

Also, unlock mastery is a thing, progress them is another story.
Veterans will be able to unlock more mastery right when HoT begins but we’ll still need to progress each one from 0.

I mean the points we “gathered” from leveling up a lvl 80 character for 2.7 years now and stuff like that.

Those don’t give you any mastery points. They’re being converted into mystic forge currency.

We get to the total POLAR OPPOSITE of “diversity” – there are only 10 combination of 3 trait lines and everyone in a profession will be one of those 10. The. End. (the specialization with be another mix of 10 clusters of 3 lines).

Each of those lines will only 27 ways of traiting, down from 418.

We get simplicity. We get hammered towards the middle in terms of performance. We do NOT get diversity.

Now if you take the current system and toss out all the useless crap, then do your calculations again, you’ll find that this change is actually improving diversity.

It’s already based on profession. Heavy Armor is a built-in bonus to Toughness. Likewise there are three tiers of health that are just built-in bonuses to Vitality.

They will give you 74 power, 74 precision, 74 toughness and 74 vitality that’s all. 1104 of the 1400 stats points you get from trait now will be from gear. I guess that for some specific build you will lose some stats, but overall for the vast majority of build you will have more control over your stats.

That’s about how much I get from defensive stats currently. Most of my traint stat points are in useless crap like condition damage, condition duration, boon duration, and virtue cooldown reduction.

Anet Needs To Step Up Visual Clarity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Strill.2591

Strill.2591

I just went to the temple of grenth event, but was dumbfounded trying to connect what was happening to my character to the visuals in the world. I would just suddenly die out of nowhere because there was no visual indicator to for the instant-kill effect, nor for the debuff that causes it. I think the most important effects should have the largest and clearest visual indicators, which currently is not the case.

(Here are the rules of the Grenth event, for those unaware.)You must figure out from the buff and debuff tooltips, that the boss can only be damaged if you are in "grenth's domain", accessible from spots at the side of the room. Meanwhile, Shades run around the room stacking the "corruption" debuff. The debuff says it increases damage taken, which is a lie. In fact, it simply kills you instantly if it reaches 25 stacks.

Trying to deal with this event intelligently, I walk up to the stairs to enter the room, and immediately get 8 stacks of corruption for no apparent reason. I was at least 900 units away from any shade. I move back and wait for it to wear off. Trying again and again, I repeatedly get hit with huge amounts of the corruption debuff from no discernible source the moment I get anywhere near the room.

If you’re going to have a mechanic that instantly kills you, a debuff counter at the bottom of the screen is absolutely not sufficient! This needs to have a very clear visual indicator! Many players in chat had concluded that the instant death was a bug because it seems so arbitrary! Similarly, when the shades apply this debuff to a player, it needs to be very clear how they did it. Simply having a shade do a jiggle from across the room in order to apply this debuff is unacceptable.

This is just one example of ArenaNet’s failure to communicate mechanics clearly and visually though. As a rule, the more important the effect, the larger its visual indicator should be. Unfortunately, unimportant effects such as auto-attacks and the Burning condition have extremely prominent visual effects, while for many bosses, the only indication that they are about to unleash a powerful attack is an unobtrusive animation with no special effects.

I don’t expect ANet to be able to fix all the mistakes they’ve already made. However, PLEASE when designing future content, make sure that the most important things have the biggest and brightest effects, while the least important things have the smallest effects! Important visual cues need to be visible on a target that’s burning, immobilized, glowing, and covered in a rain of fire all at once!

[Study] Phantasm Attack Rates (post-patch)

in Mesmer

Posted by: Strill.2591

Strill.2591

can you explain more in depth?

I get 13% just like OP using 6.602×100/7.580 which comes out to 87.098 in other words, 6.602 is 87% of 7.580 (6.602 being a 13% increase in the speed at which the swordsman attacks?)

what exactly is wrong with that?

Ok, I’ll use this hypothetical scenario to show you the problem. Imagine that without a trait, a phantasm attacks once per 10 seconds. With a trait, it attacks once per 1 seconds.

Under frifox’s calculations, this would be:

( 1 second per attack ) / ( 10 seconds per attack ) * 100% = 90%

A 90% increase is clearly wrong. The traited phantasm attacks once per second, meaning that for every time the untraited phantasm attacks, the traited one will have attacked 10 times. Therefore we should expect our result to be 1000%, indicating that the traited phantasm is ten times faster.

So in order to calculate correctly, we do

( 10 seconds per attack ) / (1 second per attack ) * 100% = 1000%.

If this seems backwards, it’s because we’re calculating in units of “seconds per attack” rather than “attacks per second”. If you convert each of the numbers into attacks per second instead, the calculation becomes what you expected.

( 10 seconds / attack ) is equivalent to ( 1 attack / 10 seconds) = 0.1 (attacks / second)
( 1 second / attack ) is equivalent to ( 1 attack / 1 second ) = 1 ( attacks/second )

( 1 attack / second ) / ( 0.1 attacks / second ) * 100% = 1000%

And we get the same result.

Correct.

Furthermore, if we assume phantasm CD really did go down by 20%, then we can calculate the duration of the animation and idle.

Don’t confuse delay reduction with attack speed increase.

If you have x attacks per y seconds, and you reduce y by 20%, you should expect:

x / ( (1 – 0.2) * y ) = 1.25 x / y

A 25% attack speed increase.

Dude, your math is completely wrong. You do not measure attack speed in seconds. You measure it in attacks / second.

Without:
7.580 sec – Duelist
0.13192 attacks per second

With:
6.602 sec – Duelist
0.15147 attacks per second

0.15147 / 0.13192 = 114.82% attack speed

Aaand it comes out to a 15% increase just like it’s supposed to.

There’s multiple kinds of lag. If it’s due to lack of bandwidth, then what’s going on in your screen will fall far, far, behind what’s actually happening and yes you won’t be able to use most skills.

However, with just latency alone, then your problems will be timing related. For example, interrupting, shattering, and keeping melee range. Ranged attacks will be ok.

Incompetent people can barely complete it at all, and think that lower levels and particular class compositions actually make a meaningful difference compared to knowing which utility skills to bring and when to dodge.

With DR being what it is on loot, these people are pretty clearly in it for the karma. Maybe the coin, too, but mostly karma. Why? Legendary hunting. Once they all get legendaries (making them all unique snowflakes that are identical to each other and no better than anyone else, possibly worse because of the lack of actual practice) they will do what? Farm more karma? Hang out in town to show out how awesome they are? Start actually playing the game?

I don’t know the answers, but the problem might just solve itself when these players are ready to move on.

I decided to try GS instead of Staff yesterday during an AC exp run. It felt awkward at so many times… I was pretty much asking myself wtf I was doing all the time.

I did notice that my first mistake was to always use iWave whenever a mob was coming to hit me. Then a Scavenger would jump on someone and since my iWave was on CD, making me feel useless. That was normal though, it was my fault for caring about such little hits, rather than saving it for more useful things.

Use iBerserker or switch to sword and use Blurred Frenzy instead.

Moving to the next skill, Mind Stab. Ok, it’s not too bad, I guess it’s pretty nice if I can hit more than 1 foe? Standing there for about a second makes me awkward, but I’d assume you get used to it after a while.

Mind stab stops you for a quarter of a second. Are you lagging?

Then Mirror Blade.. I use a shatter build and I have Deceptive Evasion, but Mirror Blade kind of made the trait awkward. I had way too many clones that I was pretty much spamming MW and CoF all the time… I guess it’s normal for PvE to have too many clones, since fights are slow, but good for PvP, since fights have more action and aoes around? Also, iElas doesn’t seem to do much for a GS(I think I’d prefer Reflection on F4).

Having too many clones for greatsword is good since greatsword clones do a lot more hits than other clones and trigger sharper images more. But I have to ask, why is this bad? Mirror blade is already a strong skill. It applies might, vulnerability, and has a good chance of hitting the same target twice.

iBerserker, as I mentionned in a post above, I don’t really like how random he is. Also, it seemed he’d do only 60% of what iWarlock would do(without conditions). I kinda like iWarlock more since he’s ranged, he has a better chance to hit, while iBerserker could die right after the first tick of his spin.. I don’t know..

Someone can get me to like iBerserker?
Also would like some opinions from others about Mirror Blade and Deceptive Evasion.

I just use iBerserker to kite, or when there’s no AoEs around. He’ll only die instantly if there’s a powerful persistent AoE. He should also be doing about the same damage as iWarlock to any given target.

Swap out Shattered Concentration for Greatsword Training. You already have GS and Sword for boon removal. Also swap Illusionary Elasticity for Master of Misdirection. The extra bounce is only good on staff and trident.

As for greatsword’s style, GS is a burst weapon and a ranged weapon. You can pop iBerserker, Mirror Blade, and Mind Stab all at once then switch to sword for even more burst, or sit back and spam spatial surge if you’re not safe enough in melee range. It has kiting potential with iBerserker and iWave, but I prefer to use Decoy for defense and save iWave to protect downed players.

GS is also the strongest AoE direct damage Mesmer has next to 1h Sword. iBerserker, Mind Stab, and Mirror Blade together can all hit multiple targets, and while their AoE range isn’t that big, there’s lots of situations where enemies clump up in very small areas.

And you obviously have not view the vids or are cluless. What makes the staff more ‘bursty’ are:
A. it’s clone generating ability is unparalled for mesmer weapons

Staff:
base 10s, traited 6s.

Greatsword:
base 8s, traited 4.8s.

What was that about staff and “unparalled” clone generation?

B. The only shatter more bursty than a: phantasm of choice + dodge + sword 3 + sword 3 + sword 2 + F1 + mirror image + F2….

So you agree with me. Staff is totally irrelevant to burst. It’s all in the shatters.

It’s absolutely true. Look at the list of the effects on the wiki:

SUNRISE:

  • Blade is a window into the sky at sunrise
  • Moving or swinging your weapon leaves a painterly afterimage. This trail also acts as a window into the sky just as the blade does.
  • The player’s body is surrounded with a soft blue aura while drawn.
  • Blue sparkles pop off the player’s body while drawn.
  • The weapon gives off a short burst of light when drawn.
  • The player’s footsteps leave a window into the sky at sunrise on the ground.
  • Blade
    • The blade is surrounded with a soft aura while drawn. The aura’s color reflects the blade’s color.
    • Animated prismatic flares appear behind the blade while drawn.
    • Yellow sparkles pop off the blade while drawn.
    • The blade’s edge is a painterly design whose texture shifts and rotates around the blade.
    • Spiked yellow glow at the base of the blade which moves from one side to the other.
  • Mirror Blade, Binding Blade, and Whirling Wrath are altered slightly, the player throws Sunrise rather than an illusionary sword.

METEOROLOGICUS:
Meteorologicus is a planetarium whose planets and clouds move. The weapon also has a light glowing effect.

It’s horrendous how little effort was put into the other legendaries.

This guardian stood in Chaos Storm the entire duration, had burning eating away at him from Winds of Chaos, stacks of Confusion from hitting a person with Chaos Armor. Weapon Swap, Illusionary Leap. Swap for the Immobilize, Mind Wrack (one more stack of Confusion too) and Blurred Frenzy on his planted butt. Then Mirror Images – > Cry of Frustration for a little bit more confusion/burst damage and finish the job.
You’re seeing no shatters being used because he has the passive trait that refreshes the cooldown on them at 50% health (on a 90 second cooldown). But they are being used.
Have to say, halfway through with the Blurred Frenzy ignoring Sanctuary’s “GTFO”, I smiled pretty wide on that.

What does Illusionary Invigoration have to do with anything? By 0:07 neither he nor his opponent were reduced to 50% health and none of his shatters are on cooldown yet his opponent is at 75% HP. Even if he were reduced to 50% HP the shatter ability should’ve briefly appeared on cooldown. Furthermore, his opponent is reduced to 50% hp moments later yet never once does a single one of his shatters appear on cooldown.

I don’t know what game you’re playing but my shatters go on cooldown immediately the moment I press the button.

@Strill
Your simply incorrect regarding the burst damage one can bring with a staff. Don’t take my word for it… take the word of Xeph (TeamP), Winterfell, Flimp (gw2 guru)… these dudes don’t burst… they destroy other classes in seconds (side note: watch some of the vids floating you will see they can often match thieves in TTK).
Take note: All prefer Staff.
That said, I haven’t ruled out GS as a viable burst option. It’s just hard when Easymode is it’s only solid proponent (if Easymode is the Easymode from Rift pwning with warlock builds, I will concede that the dude knows mage class burst builds) and he hasn’t released any vids that I know of.
Really though, personally, I’m just waiting for some vids of pro players who prefer the GS. As the few I’ve seen that ‘think’ they’re pro… well they honestly don’t deserve mention. Particularly when vewied in comparison to any of the aforementioned players and what they can do with a staff.

Please think through what you just said. The only “Burst” you can do with a staff relies on shatters. Apart from Phantasmal Mage there’s nothing else on the staff that has any burst capability. If it’s burst you’re after then GS is better than staff in every way. Those people take staff for the defense. The burst has nothing to do with the staff.

@Wads

If you think an SPvP / TPvP build is in anyway ‘different’ then the build you use when your in WvWvW you either:

A. Are a complete noob to PvP
B. ONLY WvWvW at ALL times with your 5 best bedroom buddies / guildes.

When kitten is thick in WvWvW and that thief just mugged you / you just jumped from that tower / keep that’s just been taken and are trying to hightail it to friendly turf. Well… better be able to cover that kitten with a 1v1 special…

And yes, rather than come to the forums and create that umpteenth thread: Warrior/ Theif hundred blades / Backstab my boo boo HELP! Sitback, calmdown and put on a Winterfell vid and watch how he pwns with a staff NAKED and take what you can from his Spvp vid and apply it to the times you will be caught pants down / by yourself in WvWvW.

Edit to Add: These staff dudes are destroying in 2v1’s and 3v1’s in Spvp where everyone has the same gear. Imagine the carnage in a 2v1 scenerio in WvWvW where the pvp is less egalitarian. haha

Don’t be stupid. In WvW you’re surrounded by safe zones to retreat to while in SPVP you have to fight it out. The only defense you need in WvW is to decoy>Distortion. By the time it’s over you’ve made it back into a tower or behind friendly lines.

No they haven’t fixed the transmuting legendaries bug, and no the achievements are broken with me and Sunrise as well.
