John, EVERYONE believes that justice is the eradication of dragons. Dragons are indisputably evil monsters without the tiniest shred of goodness. If you want “Dragon hunter” to be as compelling as “Witch hunter”, you would have to give dragons even a single sympathetic trait, which so far you have completely failed to do.

Here’s a better question: What kind of person WOULDN’T believe that justice is the eradication of dragons? The Sons of Svanir? The Inquest? People who make Hitler look like a saint that’s who. People who are so exaggeratedly evil that it’s comical. Setting yourself apart from them is not even the slightest bit of an accomplishment.

The Dragonhunter traps are perfectly fitting for a Guardian. They aren’t mechanical traps using mechanisms and gadgets like Ranger / Thief. They’re magical traps utilizing magical light to attack enemies. Or to put it another way, they’re basically Symbols with a slightly different functionality. Or similar to Necromancer marks.

People need to stop getting hung up on the name “Trap” and immediately thinking they’re exactly the same as Ranger / Thief style traps. They could have called them Marks and it would have been the same difference, except that by categorizing them as Traps they allow combining them with Rune of the Trapper (and who knows, maybe in the future other Runes affecting traps could be introduced).

I don’t care about the name. I care that Ranger and Thief traps are terrible and never used, and I have no reason to expect that Guardian traps will be any different.

Keep in mind that elite specs are meant to feel like a new experience. They’re almost like entire new professions, but within already existing professions.

A guardian might be a holy knight, but for their elite spec, they’ll be a holy hunter instead.

I think you’re overplaying Elite Specs. Elite specs are

  • 1 Trait line.
  • 1 Weapon.
  • A rework of profession mechanic skills.

They’re just a new spin on an existing profession, not an entirely new one. 2/3 of all your traits will be old, and unless you pick all of the new abilities and your class gets a 2H weapon, you will be using old skills too. Elite specs are not like entirely new professions.

No, they’re also new utility, elite, and heal skills.

DPS Analysis: Permanent Phantasms

Death and Taxes guild, using highly detailed DPS models, found that if a Mesmer hypothetically had three permanent, invincible phantasms:

  • Their dps would be about the same as other classes.
  • Their damage without shatters or phantasms would be about half that of other classes.

Then there would be no heavy class with shortbow. I think Anet would take this as an opportunity to introduce it to heavies. It could be either but I dislike people being mislead by the skin argument. The skin is the exact same replica on shortbow and longbow variants in size, design and colour. So it really is a toss up. I am holding my bets for shortbow though.

+1 what Bran said.

Guardian is most lacking in range. It makes the most sense that ANet would be working on fixing that.

Trait Concerns: Chronophantasm

in Mesmer

Posted by: Strill.2591

Strill.2591

I just hope that they are changing clones and phantasms to act more like minions, rather than being “connected” to a target. The Chronomancer reveal video showed the 2 clones from Mirror Images targeting the 2 different targets. Shatter could just make them all run to your current target, and Continuum Shift would be a target-less shatter.

This doesn’t help ranged clones/phantasms being in melee range, but I at least hope it will make it so clones and phantasms don’t end themselves all the time, since they would no longer die when their target does (but they would still die when you leave combat)

Don’t hold your breath.

Strill.2591

It doesnt matter what you personally care about. Mesmers are in one of the best positions for PvE. They are integral to organised groups and have a lot to give. Their only fault is their poor damage in PvE due to phantasm reliance. But with the chrono it looks like that issue will be somewhat resolved allowing phantasm/shatter hybrids while also keeping all the utility.

Don’t kid yourself. Being able to shatter phantasms once will barely make any difference in sustained DPS. It’ll more than likely lower your dps because after shattering, all your phantasms are adjacent to the boss, who will one-shot them on his next attack.

And it isnt just skipping they are good for. Its defensive utility. And yes its increased by specing into inspiration. But with the trait rework that is less necessary (glamour mastery becoming baseline).

Is that a joke? Lowering Feedback’s cooldown from 40 to 32 isn’t going to make up for the loss of two other reflects.

Question : When was the last time you actually did a dungeon? There are basically ZERO groups that do not skip certain parts of dungeons. Eg. Arah path 1, where massive amounts of enemies get skipped. “Full clears” are the exception, not the rule. Mesmer Portal is also incredibly useful for certain “traps” people love to mess up on like the path with the exploding bombs in CoF or simply annoying areas (like the laser jumping BS in the mt. maelstrom dungeon).

I do dungeons every day, and have never skipped, apart from just running past unnecessary enemies. Never once have mesmer abilities been relevant to that. Frankly my Guardian is way better at it because Aegis is much more effective at blocking stray knockdowns.

Other than mesmers(which was improved a lot with the specialization changes)

For PVP maybe, but Mesmers in PVE are still worthless. Mesmer damage is balanced around the assumption that you’ll have three phantasms out all the time (i.e. you never shatter), and even then you’re still the lowest DPS because armor runes don’t affect illusions, and there are barely any damage multiplier traits.

With all the on-shatter traits, it’s just a spit in the face of PVE Mesmers who can’t ever make any use of them.

If they actually want to fix Mesmers, they need to decouple the Mesmer’s damage from phantasms.

Necros are far worse in pve than mesmers, mesmers bring reflects, condition cleanse, stability if necessary, invis for skipping, the best boon stripping, aoe pulls, and portal for absolute maximum speed runs. The damage might not be the greatest, but many record speed runs bring mesmers simply for their incredible utility and portal skipping. The class is certainly not worthless in any sense of the word.

I couldn’t care less about skipping. It affects a miniscule proportion of the population.

Also most of our reflects are being moved to are most useless specialization line (Inspiration). The reflect skill is literally the only worthwhile one I can see in that line.

[Suggestion]Useful Magic Find

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Strill.2591

You people need to stop getting your panties in a bunch because you didn’t get one particular rare item. Just sell the stuff you get, buy what you want, and don’t worry about whether you hit the jackpot and get a precursor because that magic find is turning fines into masterworks and masterworks into rares. It’s turning T5 crafting mats into T6, which are worth 10-15 times as much. I’m perfectly happy to get T6 mats. That money adds up!

Or Anet could simply raise the drop rates from the typical koren style game 0,001% to actually drop rates, that make sense, and that would get influenced better actualyl by Magic Find.

That’s a terrible idea. If ANet were to change drop rates so that it’s possible for any given person to reliably get any given item, then it would mean the item would be on the trading post for next to nothing because too many people who don’t want it would find it.

That’s why the game is set up with a trading post, and items are so rare. If you find something you don’t want, you’re meant to sell it to someone who does want it. If you want something, you’re meant to buy it. If you don’t like that, then farm dungeon tokens instead.

Otherwise every game format will be imbalanced. Those with HoT will have an advantage over non-HoT owning (or level 80) characters in PvP and WvW;

That’s how it was in Guild Wars 1. I doubt they care.

those with HoT elite specializations will be overpowered in core locations like Orr, thus facerolling all old content, and dungeons, even fractals.

I think you’re dramatically exaggerating this, but moreover this already happens. Have you never been in a dungeon speedrun group? Dungeon bosses die in less than 10 seconds most of the time.

This is interesting, i see so many mesmers complain about shatters or phantasms that it makes me wonder every time… If you don’t like the core mechanics of a class then why are you not playing another class?

I like the core mechanics. I don’t like how the two main core mechanics (shatters and phantasms) are mutually exclusive. I especially don’t like how that problem totally ruins our viability in PVE.

There’s a lot of ways to solve it. (phantasms have their own illusion slots, and cannot be shattered, phantasms do less damage and other attacks do more instead, phantasms are nigh-invulnerable) But people have said these things since the class first came out, and to no avail.

Posted by: Strill.2591

Strill.2591

The main reason, I’ve usually felt, is that people are aggressive and nasty about pushing min/max attitudes and are severely exclusionary.

It’s not necessarily rational, but nobody likes being excluded, and double nobody likes being insulted (being called bad, foolish, etc) for not playing to some Type-A personality’s version of the game.

The problem is that if the entire team is not outfitted for maximum damage, it greatly reduces the group’s success chances as a whole. Max damage only works as long as your active defense (aegis, blind, stun, etc…) hold out. Once those run out, you start to die, which is why stuff needs to die quick.

Since one dead-weight player can bring the whole group down, people are strict on requiring zerker gear.

Other large MMOs have figured pet classes out. ANet was smart not to include a damage meter here, saves them from balancing.

Strictly PvE;
*Phantasms should be immune to AoE damage.
*Phantasms should stick around until you leave combat, not pop when their target dies.

Is there any other class in this game that gets there damage turned off when a single mob dies? We are either struggling to get more phantasms on the board or sitting there with very little to do when we have three on the board.

I hope we either get some improvement here or they make shatter more viable in PvE…

I prefer a different route. Lower Phantasm damage dramatically, and put the phantasm’s lost damage into shatters and weapon skills. Give some extra perk for shattering Phantasms. Now we aren’t hamstrung by Phantasms anymore, and all the problems with Phantasms getting killed vanish.

It seems that Anet feels that Phantasms should be only supplementary in nature rather then a fundamental play-style.

Unfortunately, Phantasms make up about half of our sustained DPS. Mesmer weapons are deliberately weaker than other classes’ weapons because they assume your phantasms will be contributing an enormous amount. To add insult to injury, even with three phantasms up all the time, Mesmers still do significantly less damage than other classes, due to our lack of damage multiplier traits.

If they really meant for phantasms to be supplementary, they’d need to lower phantasm damage, and boost all other damage.

I want our class dev traded for the Guardian/Thief guy.

My only hope is the part where he mentions that Phantasm Mesmer is counter-intuitive, since it makes you not want to shatter. Granted, the trait they added is kitten poor and does nothing to fix this problem, but I still hope for the day when this sentiment comes to the forefront and Mesmers just get redesigned so as not to be hamstrung by our reliance on phantasms.

Guardian traits look anything but weak to me. Not really a big PVPer, but PVE my god guardian looks amazing.

In PVP, you won’t have your whole group there to combo it. In PVE, your retreat is not guaranteed to pop, and even if it does, it’s not going to make much difference to your party’s overall DPS.

That should include all the old skill point challenges (the new hero challenges?). I doubt Anet will deliberately short change people and incur the wrath of pretty much the whole community. That’s not now it’s working. Hero points in the new system are strictly limited, and gained only from leveling and skill challenges. If you haven’t done skill challenges at all, you won’t be able to unlock everything.
