The extra might and quickness on pet swap will be a nice bonus also.
At any rate, I think we can all agree that the changes will certainly make GS a more than viable alternative when sword glue becomes a hindrance which certainly might be the case in the HoT content.
I was actually thinking…
Rangers are now becoming the new meta PvE class.
For Perma 25 Vulnerability stacks via Remorseless and RaO in addition to Frost Spotter. I don’t think I’m needing predator’s onslaught anytime soon.I don’t even need a Greatsword for that. I’ll get my 10% through Strider’s Defense. And I was thinking that with Warhorn and pet swap trait the 2 blast finishers will fit just nice.
A potential 47.5% damage buff to 1h sword when flanking, with full endurance, and frost spirit will be very nice indeed.
I count 50%:
Steady Focus: 10%
Predators Onslaught: 10%
Hunter’s Tactics: 10%
Strider’s Defense: 10%
Peak Strength: 10%Then Spotter and Frost Spirit
So thats 20% more damage that sword will have over GS, along with higher damage and faster attack speed.
I’d say he didn’t count Predator’s Onslaught. I mentioned that I won’t be using it since remorseless can maintain 25 vuln alone. That would match his calculations.
I calculated for a 6/6/0/0/6 build to take advantage of companion’s might and pet’s prowess.

Eagle/Hawk dispensing cripple for days with Intimidation Training.
It’s not top tier stuff and it will go away with the update, but it sure is fun.
no i was saying the destroyers were fighting against the ettins
Ohhh. Well, destroyers are Primordus’ only minions, and they aren’t corrupted creatures. They’re created by that dragon, in shapes similar to normal creatures (which is why they look like trolls or harpies or crabs).
Honestly, that is really more because Anet reused existing creature rigs (troll, harpy, crab) without giving them unique names or features.
Destroyers in GW1 were much more diverse and not based on any existing animals or races. They were much more abstract, insect-like creatures than we have now.
How old is the video? I’m not going to hold them to anything until they officially set a date or at least put some general release quarter on the site.
I think it’s from May 15th (from a cursory google search.)
It’s definitely not something to hold them to or they’d release an official date. But companies always have internal deadlines they’re trying to meet.
For sure.
I just ask because the older a video is the less likely it is to being still true today and without a revealed release date/quarter, they could effectively push it back to whatever date NCsoft lets them.

The Centaurs are obviously secretly a race of dragon minions just like how there are no risen Sylvari.
Horses for the Horse God Dragon…
They still don’t even have a release date. The only way they can keep the hype train running it to dangle dozens of carrots.
In the PvP forum there was a video by a couple devs presenting dev stuff to other devs at a conference, and they said “this is about our expansion we’re releasing this summer”. Not a hard date, but at least we know their rough internal deadline. Like they aren’t planning on releasing it for Christmas if everything goes well.
How old is the video? I’m not going to hold them to anything until they officially set a date or at least put some general release quarter on the site.
It’s already June and they have only revealed 3.5 classes out of 9 so far and most of what we’ve heard about what will be exclusive to the xpac still feels very vague. It might be in Summer but at this rate that will be the exact day before the first day of Fall.
The lack of events has put the game in a stasis/limbo where most will either log in to just do a world boss tour and dailies or will stick almost entirely to farm maps like Orr and Silver Wastes/Dry Top.
There’s probably still a sizable amount of people logging in daily, but you’re not going to find a tremendous amount on at the same time, for a long time.
If people complain about double Mauls, that’s really a l2p issue. Maul has a super obvious tell and is so easy to dodge, if you get hit by it, that’s your problem.
While I agree to a sense, it’s funny that this is a commonly held idea when everyone also loves to sing the praises of the Ranger’s ability to spam immob and other CC.
Look what it does to my pretty and expensive shield! It is soulcrushing.
Holy crap, a Grinning Shield mint in the original packaging!
They’re not really part of the lore in the sense that mounts would have had little place in GW1 and the world seems to lack human sized riding animals like horses, despite references to them.
Do people even scroll to the end of the body selection? Both genders have a very “average” body type though the male could do without the defined abs on a body that doesn’t look like it belongs to a guy who does a hundred crunches a night.
Both the leap and the evade are crucial parts of the sword, but the evade is more important imo. Still, having the leap for an opener would be great, which is why I like the idea I posted above about making Hornet’s/Monarch a flip/toggle sort of thing.
imo, Hornet’s and Monarch’s should be like a toggle, you use Hornets to evade back and the skill flips and stays as Monarchs until you use it again. Once you use Monarchs, then it changes back to Hornet’s. Best of both worlds.
You could setup for a leap opener by evading back and then running around with Monarchs, when you want to attack, leap and it swaps back to Hornet’s.
One of the dramas I see with Monarchs is that you use Hornet’s to evade back, then HS or kite some, but then the opportunity to use Monarchs closes as the skill goes on CD. Imo, I think Monarchs needs a CD as well, they would have separate CDs and essentially become two separate skills in the same slot.
They just need to dramatically increase the window of time we have to use the leap. Something in line with the 15s thieves have to use Infiltrator’s Return would be fine.
Quick draw is going to get nerfed to hell and back once the update hits. The amount of people complaining about double mauls and “omg the 998933938 damage from double RF is 2 gud!” will not go unnoticed by anet.
The only thing we can say for certain is it will be pretty, have dinosaurs (sort of?), and have lots of frog people.
Why cannot they do simple things, like reveal all the existing classes elite specs before going fo the new class at the end, instead of being all over the place with their reveals.
They still don’t even have a release date. The only way they can keep the hype train running it to dangle dozens of carrots. If they released everything now, it’s likely the general MMO community would forget about HoT by the time it gets here.
Back to the point though. We got the name of the Ranger spec as well as it’s new weapon before anything else. We’re probably going to be last.
Just say no to instanced content.
just say no to more entitled and egoistic behavior within the community thats supposed to be the best online gaming community and people who should be playing single player games with a difficulty slider instead of a MMO.
I highlighted the keyword for you, community. Instanced content for 5 players doesn’t build a community, large scale open world content does. And, asking for special content created just for 5 people to play IS acting far more entitled than asking for more open world content for everyone to play.
lol oh ya, all that community building when we all silently auto attack a giant walking blob of skill effects until it dies.
Sorry but I don’t know how many instance/dungeon based MMO’s you’ve played but they all have perfectly fine communities and the one’s I’ve played have a lot less selfish people in them demanding groups take them while they intentionally play badly probably because they all know what taking personal responsibility for the success of an instance feels like.
The kind of thing you don’t learn at all being a face in a crowd of 100 poking a harmless mountain of HP to death.
Anyone else play female charr over male charr just because of the fluffy tails?
There’s no “touch” option available for the “fluffy tail” so it really doesn’t matter…
It sure doesnt sound very exiting, staff ranger
It literally can’t be any more boring than the “Auto attack and nothing else, ever…” Lb or A/WH rangers that so many play.
1: colision is a good thing
2: zerging is a good thing
3: friendly fire is not a good thingAbout troll blocking: what if you can pass friends if both of you out of combat?
That would cause so many issues if 2 or more people where clipping into one another and then they got put into combat.
They could just make it displace the people like the game currently does when a bag spawns but that would still not be a cure all.
I can easily imagine the server just “nope!”ing right into a crash from a zerg stacking for might and then having 40+ people get put into combat all on top of one another and the system struggles to scatter everyone into a proper position.
friendly collision go with friendly fire…. If some troll decide to block some path, just kill it… And on some game, repeated friendly fire, or trolling with blocking path can be reported, and people can get banned for a little time…
Friendly fire is even worse and Anet doesn’t have team of dedicated GM’s the same way a pay2play MMO would.
I’m surprised the devs are aware it’s missing and doing nothing about it, to be honest. I thought they didn’t notice it wasn’t available.
How do you get “doing nothing about it” from “it will come”?
The amount of time since it was available is quite considerable.
Don’t worry. We got the ol’ Soon™ which means it will indeed come sometime between tomorrow and when the sun explodes.
What happens if a bunch of trolls block your path??? Doesn’t sound fun at all.
^ This. We already have enough folks intentionally wasting supply or spamming the wrong kind of siege. We really don’t need to let people be able to body block allies from running into a tower/keep portal.
The problem is you can still be hit by targeted skills after stealth,
The problem is on you. Ranger reacts faster than you and cast their RF BEFORE you enter stealth, deal with it. If you go to stealth sooner, he’ll lose target and couldn’t hit you.
The real problem is too many bad thieves rely too much on stealth as their “oh-kitten” bottom, and think going into stealth = invincible/ solving all problems.
L2P.
What? Are you aware that rapid Fire has an instant cast time? How do you expect the thief to stealth before the instant lock rapid fire? CnD has a half second cast time, and lol if you think d/p can stealth before he instant casts rapid fire.
Learn when to enter stealth and when to dodge, and when to dodge while in stealth…
Learn to count CD too…. Basically a L2P issue. My point is too many thieves have the mentality of “I go into stealth = I’m safe”.
Wtf does learn to count CD mean?
It’s not a “stealth = safe” mentality. It’s that it makes NO SENSE why channeled attacks can follow someone while they’re in stealth. Even if you double dodge you will still get hit, and then you have no dodges for anything else.
What do you expect me to do? Blow all my intiative or use cooldowns every time I see a ranger in the distance? I don’t think you’ve ever actually played thief vs longbow ranger, or you would now how ridiculous a suggestion it is that to counter ranger rapid fire “learn when to enter stealth”.
Count CD of other opponent’s crucial skills like RF?
When RF is not ready, you can safely spike them. If you’re in melee range, you can cancel RF by roll through ranger/teleport to the back of ranger, and so on.
And yes, you should blow your initiative when you see RF, either to interrupt, dodge, and so on.If all fails you, then go play that noobest build ever existed: Dire perplexity condition thief.
….none of this stuff is relevant because it ignores that rapid fire shouldn’t be allowed to follow someone in stealth.
According to whom?
Most games have at least some kind of caveat around “stealthing”. Be it moving slower, needing to stealth outside the attention of an enemy, things like being on fire or covered in jarate showing where you are etc. There’s always something to balance out the fact that you are now kittening invisible.
About the only downside to stealth in this game is it’s not “activate god mode” against channeled skills and apparently even that’s not enough.
They can’t design content to force ppl to have a healer or tank build required, because that would be wow clone, and god, zerker meta can have a lot of downsides, but Thank God, it’s not wow clone.
WoW did not invent Tank and Spank and Anet would never had made the money it did to justify NCsoft funding GW2 without defined class/party roles in GW1…
That unlikelihood is based on …. what exactly?
Example: If Mesmer becomes a more prominent part of the PvE meta with sharing Quickness … QZ could become far less useful.
We don’t know if this will/won’t happen … but if it does, QZ would possibly be replaced by some other utility.
Unless they can keep it up 100% of the time or a trap becomes better than a 50% attack speed increase for 6 seconds every 48/60 seconds, yes, it’s unlikely.
Yes, I am always annoyed and still confused that our main hand weapon is on the left side of the skill bar and on the right hand of the character.
Mirroring animations is not hard at all. I would love to seet that.
Otherwise, you have not idea how much I want to move our main hand weapon to slot 3-5 and offhand 1 and 2.
You have to adjust each rotational value one at a time individually to do this which can be a lot of work for even one auto attack chain. Never mind redoing many particle effects/animations so they come out the correct side.
Will traps become better? Hopefully.
Will traps become so good that they end up a superior choice to Wild Signet, Frost Spirit, and QZ? Extremely unlikely.
Guardian is not a ranger is the Ranger name in the Guardian class i think not , its a Holy knight/warroir/paliadin with a bow! its a front line combatant with a Ranged option he doesn’t need to be at a far distance to use the LB.
does he Trasverse land or move quickly between locations often i think not.
By your rules, the thief and warrior are already better “traverses of land” and thus, better Rangers.
(edited by Substance E.4852)
@andruill and Toxca
Yes Guardian is a heavy armor class but ranger has more base Vitality/ health so I kind of considered that a wash.
And I understand guardians 3 skill can completely negate a rangers. I think this is just this match up though. I was thinking more vs a random class encounter.
In regards to a ranger vs guardian matchup. I’d like to respond once I see our elite specialization but if i have to respond now……
Guardians 3 is a skill shot, move sideways when you use rapid fire. The F3 is on a long cooldown and will be used once in the fight. when you see this used, maybe use pet a little bit. a wolf fear will turn them around and they are open from the backside again. Swap weapons and evade a bit or use some utility skills to help in those couple of seconds. Do something other than standing there and pressing 1 or 2 for a few seconds….
It’s irrelevant how the two LB builds far against one another. Why would a Guardian even play like this when they could just JI right to you and melt you?
Hell, they could just throw down a Wall of Reflection and pewpew you for 10s while your arrows do nothing.
It’s already clear that the DH longbow will provide on par damage with much better CC attached to a class with incredibly superior team support. That’s why it’s better.
6/6/6/0/0 for pve and maybe 6/0/6/0/6 for wvw if Beastly Warden ends up as good as everyone is hoping it will.
Yes the Dragon Huggers will wipe the floor with us.
The true shot is massive damage in one shot. Our RF is 10 shots that usually don’t land even half of them.
Bouncing arrows + cripple + 10% dmg in crippled + 10% damage when more than 600 units + Fire CC… Mmm… Something does not really fit here with we compare it to the poor ranger and its minion, i mean pet.
1200 to 1500 is not that big of step. 300 units is almost a range for a melee weapon.I play guardian as well and i can say: the traps looks amazing but the guard has better mobility with meditations. So hope for medi-guards with longbow, that can pop up anywhere in the map and pewpew you with one shot.
So i’ll became a Dragon Hugger and be the nightmare of any fellow mates.I was thinking bout deflecting shot in your face everytime rapid fire is up, will it destroy all arrows or just 1? nobody knows maybe but if it’s all then we are totally screwed trying to use longbow against them.
With the amount of Guardians that bring Wall of Reflection to WvW zerg fights, they’ve already been the anti-LB Ranger for a while.
I’m hoping so. Dagger without the extra range on Stalkers and Talon is going to be a lot less fun.
Anywhere from “Not gonna make the cut for ‘reasons’” to “they’re not done with the traits yet”
I’m going to lean on the second possibility since there are a lot on the grid that still suck and/or need to be combined with others to matter in the new game.
EB is a great example as there’s little reason to take the current version when the new Wilderness Knowledge is just so much better.
But there already are several totally viable builds I’ve thought of after the changes are made. One of them uses 50% projectile denial. Passively.
Front line Ranger will be useful, and I’m definitely looking forward to it.
You die in the front line from hammer, marks/wells, and meteor shower aoe. Wall of reflection is already a vastly superior projectile deterrent.
Reflecting projectiles while meleeing isn’t really going to do much at all.
Ranger has several other modifiers though, and these do stack.
The 6/5/3 build already gives rangers 45% bonus, and there is the potential for that to be even higher in HoT.
Other damage modifier are irrelevant because we all make choices. Also go check Warrior, Mesmer, Guardian, and Thief’s new traits before you say 45% is alot. (Not to mention you need FLANKIG, 90% HP above, FULL Endurance, and enemies suffering from movement impairment to achieve that damage)
When you look at Predator Onslaught, it does not justify to be in the grand-master trait. If they stay as it is, it should be moved into a minor trait instead.
Maybe it’s because people in ranger’s forum are so easily satisfied, that Anet are mostly reluctant/ don’t care about fixing ranger’s issue, as compare to other classes’ forum, people demand way more and QQ way more.
2+ years of getting the short end of most every stick will do that to ya…
Healing Spring trapper ‘balls’ were a big thing for a while in GW1, they were pretty effective, I’d like to try it out in WvW. Longbow trapper hybrid with trapper runes x 50. Would be super hard to melee train due to all the traps and 1500 range piercing arrows to plink everything that comes close. Then the Quick Draw Barrages
If the Ranger didn’t have at least 1 completely worthless trait that no one would ever, ever take, it just wouldn’t be GW2.
Guard may be useful and a lot of apothecary rangers run it, but its still a very very badly designed skill.
Most rangers use Guard only because of its access to Nature’s Voice on a short cooldown. You will hardly see any rangers running Guard without the trait. Honestly, there are no viable builds out there that runs Guard without taking Nature’s Voice.
Do you have a viable build using untraited traps, untraited spirits, untraited survival skills ? A lot of utitlities need traits to work, no matter the class. I don’t see your point.
Those skills have specific purposes that they are brought for on their own. Regen builds would still bring Guard to spam NV even if guard did absolutely nothing.
They absolutely need to make thrown traps the default mode with they are going to buff necro wells…
You call this a buff, I call this a huge nerf. Well, whatever, Heal as one is becoming a shout and just that is a huge improvement for rangers.
Source :
Ten Ton Hammer: How much of a revision are existing skills getting for each profession? Are any and all up for improvement or revision and if so, to what degree do you think you’ve done this?
Jon: It depends on the profession and it depends on the skill. We talked about some examples for instance where Mortar is turning into a kit. There are other examples like where Heal as One is becoming a shout. We’re also rebalancing some skills based on the way traits are changing. The goal of this is to make more viable builds and give more definition to professions.
LughLongArm.5460 :Also, if lines dont give stats anymore, how the pet stats will be as high as it is now while going into BM trait line. Perheps the stats will move to the minor traits in the that line(100 for every minor trait).
I easily guess that taking the BM line will grant these stat to our pet like their will be a reduced attunement recharge when ele will take the arcane line.
ArenaNet examples how Elementalists currently have a base attunement recharge of 10 seconds, which will be reduced to 8.7 seconds when the Arcane specialization is selected.
If you’r right BM line is going to become very strong, we used to “secrafise” 600 worth of stats for diving into BM(ya, i know some builds made use of the 300 healing power) with the new system if we dont sacrafise stats and traits going to merge/become better, Bm builds could become a thing(They also talked about shout changes).
BTW if all skills are becoming part of a “theme” RAO also going to become a shout( togather with heal as one) TU -survival and HS – TRAP/Signet?
RaO technically already has a skill type. It’s just a skill type that has no other company and thus no synergy with traits what so ever.
They would cost even more then. Anet already made a pretty big concession letting us use them as account bound.
They have locked off the Hall of Monuments for the time being because there was a glitch that let anyone who made a new character instantly unlock the entire reward line, titles included.
Even if you get the HoM points to get the staff, you won’t be able to use it any time soon, if ever at this rate…
Melandru’s Gaze is a pretty “Duidy” staff, as is the Mordremoth staff. If you are a bazillionare, the Deam staff is also a really nice option.
They absolutely need to make thrown traps the default mode with they are going to buff necro wells…
I would hold off the celebrations until we see what we get.
They are condensing traits and also turning them into base functionality but even the “we will probably break even, maybe” tone of the trait stat points post makes me think that all of our current functionality isn’t guranteed to make it in.
And GW1 heroes idea is bad IMO.. I dont play MMO to run around with bunch of AI meatbags :p
I don’t play MMO to run around just doing chest farming either. Nobody was interested in fighting monsters and doing the group events except myself and what do you expect? I certainly can’t hold all the forts on my own.
If they don’t provide heroes as in GW1 then what is the solution?
Change map to one that is doing the events instead of chest farming?
I repeat, there was nobody doing the events except for me!
On all maps? Just change instance it’s simple
ArenaNet needs to make a stand between those who hope to play this game to kill monsters and those who perform exploit farming.
I am finding more and more conflict between the 2 groups of people. The exploit farmers who have found ways of manipulating the game for more loot, thus making everything on the TP more expensive, and those who sincerely want to play the game as it is designed.
Another example of exploit farming is this other thread that I have started:
What is ArenaNet going to do with all these exploits?
Nothing in all likelihood and if Silverwastes is any indication, expect a whole lot more in the HoT areas.
The loot trains provide an easy reason for people to log in, inflate prices to encourage gem buying, and are incredibly easy to design to the point that it requires almost no effort on Anet’s part.
The only reason that the Queensdale train got put down was because of the New Player Experience. They wanted to remove all champs from all starting areas because of reasons and likely also did it because it makes the game look incredibly bad to newbies who mostly make human characters.
Actually I have nothing against farming, but in this case, the SW chest farming has grown to such popularity that it completely overshadowed the events there. So much so that it becomes more lucrative to just do chest farming over and over without playing the events in that area.
This is where the conflict with regular event players start to happen simply because these are designed to be group events and we don’t have heroes like we used to in GW1. Therefore, regular players are now taking a hit when they find it hard to hold forts on their own.
All these add up to more conflicts between players in the area and creates a negative playing experience all around. Furthermore, when it becomes more rewarding to not play the game than it is to play the game, is a sure sign of trouble in the game design.
Pretty much and it’s not even enough to make a room for Vinewrath.
I was just in one that had a commander coordinating people in a very friendly and positive way and suddenly someone rolls in shouts “Chest train going up at red tag!” and suddenly the support at the forts evaporated as everyone scrambled to join the zero effort loot parade.
It’s making this game a joke and really eating at my hopes for Heart of Thorns.
Has anyone actually gotten enough rings to make any real kind of data set or is this another “this happened twice in a row and thus is the norm” thread?
The chance of any ring spawning after you have gotten one already is the same as the first time it dropped. The chance of the total event happening is incredibly low but likely not lower than a BLK or precursor drop with the amount of rings that drop in fractals.
Now, if people started getting 2-3 of the same ring in WvW rank chests I’d start to worry…
(edited by Substance E.4852)
Those are whole tickets and require collecting an entire set of Black Lion Weapons. If you have that kind of money/gold lying around you can just buy what ever weapon you want to use the scrap on.
