I have to agree with most of the anti-JP posters.

The JP isn’t a problem. It is a resource. Yes it would be nice to have capture points up there as well, but even without providing points they are still valuable to control in WvW.

Is it worth 30+ people to secure the JP?… no, just as taking a single supply camp with 30+ people is also a waste of time.

The WvW JP doesn’t need to be a scapegoat for disorganized servers and people who can’t jump.

Sigil of Water is absolute garbage. IIRC it heals for like 400 or so and barely scales with Healing power. An extra 5% damage would probably be a better healing focused sigil than Sigil of Water.

Or, people don’t want to be “robbed” of their ability to run away like a little kitten and save their ego. It’s PvP..if you can’t handle dying – don’t play, lol.

Since when is fleeing from single combat considered saving one’s ego? You are just making this up as you go along aren’t you?

I’d be all for it, assuming some of the Initiative costs would be rebalanced.

A problem with the current Initiative system is that there’s no real choice.

Whereas you’re supposed to chose between damage and utility in theory, in practice you’re just choosing between damage and damage as that’s what most weapon skills are.

Having Stealth cost Initiative would address this issue to an extent and force Thieves to managed the resource a little more as opposed to spaming their best moves.

Because resource systems without choice are essentially a waste.

There is a lot of utility that costs initiative. Also there are a couple popular weapon skills that provide invisibility (therefore invisibility uses initiative).

Name a weapon set for Thieves that has no utility to support your claim. Thief weapon skills (which cost initiative) have everything from gap closers, blinds, evades, daze, teleports, ranged AoE. There are also combo fields, leaps, projectiles, whirls and blasts.

Does a noobslayer glass cannon Thief use initiative for anything other than turning invisible and spamming Heartseeker? No, they don’t have to because they are primarily hunting noobs, and even when they aren’t hunting noobs they are specialized for damage, not utility.

Is dying to backstab a L2P issue?

After you L2P, backstab Thieves are a laugh.

The thing is, the people who need to L2P the most are the ones that refuse to do so. Rather than admitting that they are at fault, they prefer to find a scapegoat. They then bring the scapegoat into the open on the forum and beat it. Others looking for a scapegoat decide to join in. Soon you have a chorus of bad players and noobs who take this disinformation for granted. All of this is because of a loud minority that has such an inflated ego that they can’t be bothered to learn how to improve their own skill.

I’m pretty sure these people never played video games during the 1990’s, they have way too many entitlement issues and are too egotistical to play video games that require effort.

Yeah, and nowhere in that philosophy does it say that they are entitled to run away like little babies if a fight isn’t going their way.

Your problem may be that you seem to see “being useless and fleeing from battle” as “not-losing”.

Fleeing from battle without doing anything useful is always considered losing the fight. Especially when the initial goal of the flighty wimp was to stop the enemy from completing their objective.

How you cannot see your enemies fleeing in terror as you winning the fight, I do not understand.

As was asked already ITT, what is so imbalanced about running away? There is no deathmatch game type in GW2, all the PvP is objective based.

Oh right, its because the fact that gem-gold trades are between players is a fact that completely destroys their precious little conspiracy theories… and they need their scapegoats.

Whats your deaths per hour?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Surbrus.6942

If you PvP then that also messes this sort of study up.

Personally I don’t really die at all in PvE. However WvW gives more than enough deaths. And the amount of deaths in WvW tells you nothing of the circumstances of those deaths, someone with a low death rate in WvW might just be playing half asleep in the middle of a big zerg… or perhaps they flee ever time they don’t outnumber an enemy 5 to 1. Someone who dies a lot in WvW might be taking greater risks for greater payoffs, perhaps they died fighting 10 to 1 odds, but were able to delay a cap on a tower until the cavalry arrived… or perhaps this person with the deaths is the one that lead a suicide charge on an enemy siege line (suicide charge because all the people without deaths were too busy whining about how hopeless the siege is while hiding in the tower under siege true story).

Having a single number like the amount of deaths doesn’t really tell you anything. You need a whole lot more variables to make this anything more than troll science.

Commanders and Professions

in WvW

Posted by: Surbrus.6942

Surbrus.6942

The good thing about being a more survivable, or even bunker build for a commander is that you can literally lead your forces into battle.

Especially when randoms don’t know/trust you (whether you are a commander or not), if they see people make the jump then they are more likely to follow.

Several times in WvW I’ve participated in a smaller group charging and routing a much larger group. Those cases only worked when either someone with a blue commander icon above their head jumped in, or I was with many guildies and we could lead the randoms in the charge (just by being a larger group).

When you can literally see your allied commander at the tip of the spear thrusting through an enemy force (and not dying), it is a great moral booster.

I am not too familiar with Rangers, but I assume you can make a fairly survivable build with it. A Ranger commander that I used to work with a few times was similarly survivable as my balanced Guardian.

Either way, a dead commander is bad for moral, one that is alive is better for moral. A commander that puts themselves into harms way is better for moral. Being a good commander is about leading randoms and supplying good moral. There is nothing stopping the commander from simply relaying orders from guildies that aren’t using the commander icon. Good orders are needed for a commander, but no one said that they have to be your orders… it helps if the commander is knowledgeable yes, but influencing moral is what the commander icon is really useful for.

Why many people are no longer playing GW2?

in WvW

Posted by: Surbrus.6942

Surbrus.6942

I hardly think that the issue is Thieves. No matter how many lone glass cannon Thieves there are hunting down lone noobs and glass cannons, that does not turn the WvW map one colour.

The problem that is making many people disillusioned with WvW is the constant blowouts caused by mass server transfers to the winning server. Many of those complaining about Thieves would simply complain about another arbitrary scapegoat if Thieves were simply deleted from the game.

PvP in GW2 is objective based. Lone assassins killing lone vulnerable targets do very little work towards hitting those objectives. They are pretty much a tangent to the actual game type.

Do people who specialize their class to eliminate single targets with quick hit and run attacks better at eliminating single targets with quick hit and run attacks? Sure they are, just as someone who builds a class to support large groups will be better at supporting large groups. If you specialize, you should have an advantage in the field you are specializing into.

I am pretty sure that people aren’t leaving the game because they don’t like to fight Thieves. They are leaving because WvW is a mess, but Thieves are not the reason.

And before some comments about how “you’re a Thief so of course you don’t think Thieves are imbalanced”, I have a level 29 Thief (tanky/support/controlling style in sPvP), a balanced/tanky Guardian, and main a balanced Mesmer.

The problem is that even after you get them to low health they stealth and run out of sight. Its much to easy for them to get into stealth, heck even the healing skill stealths them.

A cowering Thief is not very scary.

Cap the camp in peace, rest assured that the tower or keep will not fall to Thieves. In sPvP cap your point, take out the extra objectives.

If the PvP was a deathmatch then saying that they can run away may be more of a viable balance complaint. However since it is not a deathmatch, the ability to run away and hide is not that powerful.

Besides, many classes can do things to help them run away; cripples, knockbacks over cliffs, holding out until allies arrive, making a run for a camp/tower/keep where a door and/or NPC’s can help protect you. Utilization of perma swiftness and movement skills also helps in fleeing from combat.

If you can think of balance reasons for why running away like a little wimp is a bad thing, then do please elaborate.

Bursty thieves spend very little time in stealth. They’re just using it to deliver Backstab as quickly as possible.

This. Your proposed solution doesn’t even address the issue which some people have difficulty with.

The problem most noobs and glass cannons have with Thieves is that they don’t know how to fight a glass cannon Thief. Glass cannons of any class aren’t nearly the threat to more experienced players than they are to noobs and other glass cannons. Once someone gets a little more experience and learns the game more, these noob killing builds aren’t that bad.

Seems like a L2P thing. Melee both does more damage, and generally has AoE on every attack, making it do even more damage than range.

Is using ranged attacks easier? Yes. Does my 100% melee party complete combat in half the time with fewer people going down than a heavy ranged party? Yes.

As for people wanting more explanations and tutorials… ok maybe but why is just playing the game and learning for yourself, or learning from other people seem like such a foreign concept to you people? Did you people even play video games in the 1990’s (and before)? Learning for yourself is all part of the fun, and honestly I would like to see new content in the form of new stuff, bug fixes, and balance tweaks rather than a wealth of tutorials for people who can’t be bothered to figure things out on their own, or at least learning from other people.

I’m still thinking a lot of ideas can still be implemented into existing classes to further expand on them.

How about give the Ranger a Staff and have it give more Druidic magic, maybe a shape shifting ability on the staff, or just put shapeshifting into utilities/elites. Some more arcane/illusionist shapeshifting could be given to the Mesmer, more elemental shapeshifting forms could be given to the Elementalist. These could be provided via utilities/elites or weapon skills.

Gold sellers using ectos to transfer wealth?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Surbrus.6942

Surbrus.6942

Ectos are used as a reserve currency of sorts by more than just gold farmers. Diversifying your in game wealth, just like diversifying your RL wealth is a great insurance against inflation or other things that might hit your wealth you are holding.

Since ectos are used to hold wealth, when the buyer wants to purchase something, they need to liquidate their ectos into gold. This was very apparent during the Great Precursor Lottery during the Lost Shores event. During that event, many precursors were hitting the Trading Post. During this scramble of buying up cheap precursors from those lottery winners, those holding large amounts of wealth in ectos were liquidating their ectos, which could be seen by the falling ecto prices during that turbulent time on the Trading Post immediately following the Lost Shores event.

This analysis would probably have to be more in depth. Maybe it is due to gold farmers using the expensive method of transferring wealth over the Trading Post… however it very well could have been the case that people simply wished to liquidate their ectos to acquire gold for other means. Perhaps these people were purchasing Holiday related crafting mats, or wishing to purchase gems, or other non malicious reasons.

Fortunately for you there are still plenty of noobs out there, including people with a lot of experience with the game but just refuse to L2P against backstab Thieves.

Basically the build is Beserkers and throw a bunch of traitpoints randomly into the power and precision trees. The game play is stealth, then backstab the players who have the memory of a goldfish and forget about you as soon as you stealth. If you are playing against a player that doesn’t have the memory of a goldfish, then they’ll probably just walk out of range, dodge/block/etc and/or attack you while you are invisible.

Musings of the Market - An analysis

Surbrus.6942

Just my point of view: The concept of “free-market” is what allowed every single recession to take place. Do we need to follow it?

And the concept of government intervention is what worsened every recession that has taken place. Recessions are self corrections in the market. Intervention only makes those recessions more painful as resisting corrective behaviours of the market only delays that correction.

This particular tangent might be moving slightly off topic, but since we are discussing intervention into a market versus non-intervention into a market, this background is an important topic of discussion for determining the reasoning behind arguments for intervention or non-intervention into artificial game economies such as this.

I will agree to a certain extent but let me ask you this:

Has the production of diamonds been a constant throughout the beginning of time?

Also, do consider that by observing the full lifespan of the supply of lodestones in particular our current supply for a certain type has decreased dramatically. This seems as an artificial scarcity to me, one that i would like to be minimalized during the course of time

The production of diamonds has not been constant throughout time, however the same could be said of Charged Lodestones. Charged Lodestones are difficult to obtain, they depend on farming the CoE dungeon as well as farming Sparks in Cursed Shore. In the case of farming the Sparks, certain event chain requirements must be met in Malchors Leap.

The higher the price of Charged Lodestones, the more people will pursue these specific series of events in order to summon the Sparks, or farm the specific dungeon. This is providing incentives for doing content other than Fractals, which IMO is a good thing as it creates “more things to do”.

If the supply of Charged Lodestones is adjusted to solve this problem with scarcity, then there will be fewer economic incentives to participate in a larger variety of game play. This also punishes those that would have the initiative to lead the market in addressing the issue of scarcity by going out and hunting for these profitable aspects of the game.

I am not objecting to the changing of drop rates, however what I am objecting to is changing drop rates specifically to try to equalize the prices of different resources. Due to the high price of diamonds, there is great incentive for individuals to pursue mining and geology related careers to look for such resources. Finding new sources of diamonds may increase the supply, but we in the real world cannot rely on some omnipotent power to solve scarcity issues for us.

Going back to the fashion/prestige argument. Since Lodestones are only used for aesthetic purposes, there is no sense of the prices being “unfair”. That would be like saying that it is “unfair” that gold jewellery incorporating diamonds is more expensive than tin jewellery incorporating glass. Without scarcity, there is no prestige, and without prestige, the fashion industry is greatly injured. Since GW2’s endgame progression depends greatly on aesthetics, removing prestige from certain aesthetics will reduce the reward of pursuing such goals.

Defensive armour sets would be:
-Clerics (Heal>Pwr=Tgh)

-Shaman (Tgh>Heal=Con for sPvP, Heal>Vit=Con for PvE I believe)
-Soldiers (Pwr>Tgh=Vit)

This prevents people from building their character without any offensive ability.

Surbrus.6942

Yes, the price of Charged Lodestones are greatly out of the ordinary when compared to other Lodestones. However is there really a problem here?

Yes this lodestone has a much higher demand than the supply. But is that really an issue? People looking for Charged Lodestone derived products can choose to go for that expensive resource, or they can change their goals and choose a substitute in products that use different, more affordable Lodestones.

The resources in this game may be “unlimited”, but that does not mean that there is no scarcity. Scarcity is a very basic economic concept, and it is well and alive in this game and in the drop rates.

Lets make a real world comparison to diamonds. Diamonds are both useful in industrial processes as well as for vanity. DeBeers holds a lot of control over the diamond market, and their artificial restrictions on diamonds, in addition to Diamonds being heavily demanded for both fashion and industry, means that they are largely unfeasible to use for industrial purposes. Gold is in a similar situation, as it has great industrial uses, but the inflated price means that those in industry must use substitutes.

Shifting the demand to substitutes both reduces the demand for the more scarce resource, as well as utilizing more of the less scarce resource.

Since we area talking fashion, as that is the only reason why we use Lodestones, scarcity is part of the prestige. People don’t wear gold and diamond jewellery for the looks, they wear it for the prestige. If they were only interested in the looks they would just use a cheaper lookalike. Intervening in the market to normalize prices of Lodestones would greatly impact the prestige value of those items that use Charged Lodestones.

Can you provide arguments that explain why the prices should be normalized?

I think that is reading too much into the situation, and a case of seeing what you want to see.

Can someone explain how the GW2 economy is “out of control”? What do most people think the issue is?

To me it is obviously bots lowering the prices, and Ascended items driving up costs. However that doesn’t mean that the economy isn’t working, it simply means that there are pressures on the market which are then addressed by the market… you know, how an economy is supposed to work by allocating resources efficiently and responding to changes in the market.

However I never see anyone but myself stat this issue. It seems that most people just don’t want a gold sink, and they just spout out suggestions that would truly screw over the game economy with ridiculous regulations that you’d think some short sighted, populous politician (only concerned with short term political gain at the expense of future generations) thought up. It also sounds like some people do actually have a clue about what they are talking about, but they are still rather vague on what the issues actually are… or seem to want something entirely different.

You do have a point, but I will also point out that organized play and pug play can be very different from a team roles perspective.

That is very true, PUGs and more organized play are going to differ vastly. The vast majority of my experience is with more organized play, so I may be a little bias towards that style.

That said, can you elaborate a little more on the roles of classes in GW2? Thing is, even if there are roles, are there enough classes to fill them? Not to mention the simple fact that, at the end of the day in GW2 “damage and surviving” is something that every class must do regardless of their specific build. So are these roles, or just extra?

Different roles I’ve seen to be useful.
>Tank
Contrary to what many people might say, there is an aggro or “hate” system that many enemies use. It can be simple, or more complex. In general, high toughness will give the player more aggro/hate, proximity is also a good bet most of the time. Some things might be a little more specific to the particular enemy themselves: some enemies really hate people who use range, some hate melee, some hate when you apply conditions, etc. Having this knowledge my guild was able to know exactly where the enemy attacks were going to be directed in the Twilight Arbour dungeon, to the point where if the “main tank” couldn’t keep up (defensive cooldowns, too low of HP, about to die, etc), they would inform the rest of the party that the aggro is going to be transferred to [specific character] and when exactly the aggro is going to be shifted.

Of course when I am saying “tanking” for GW2 I don’t mean that the “tank” is standing around and letting the enemy attack them. The “tank” is going to be using as many defensive abilities and dodges as they can. Example against the Spider boss in Twilight Arbour, my Hammer Guardian is going to be trying to get as many auto attack chains completed (for protection), side stepping as many attacks as possible, and dodging/blocking when they can’t simply sidestep (to save on cool downs and endurance). Of course this Guardian should fight a little distance from everyone else, so that the AoE isn’t being thrown towards the rest of the party. Note: this role generally requires a lot of meta-knowledge about the game, as knowing what particular enemies “hate” is the best way of directing their attacks away from your allies.

>Support
We’ll call this “support”. Healing is only a small part of support, what the support role does more so is provide boons, and in general makes it easier for the rest of the party to do what they are trying to do. These guys usually love Boon duration, and spit out a variety of boons all over the party. This role also consists of condition removal. In general whatever “supports” allies and makes them more effective can fall into this role.

>Control
We’ll call this “control”, it could probably use a better description. Basically this role would consist of screwing over your enemies and making them less effective. Interrupts, CC, applying conditions and removing enemy boons are great. Anything that you can do to make the enemy less effective (besides just killing them) is “controlling” the battlefield. I have a Thief that mostly goes for this role, where I pretty much have Weakness and Poison permanently on my enemy (heals are less effective, attacks do less damage), plenty of blinds (negating enemy attacks), dazes (interrupts, negating enemy actions) as well as boon removal (negating enemy boons). I don’t really do a whole lot of damage, but with that build and style I can make the effectiveness of my enemies greatly suffer.

>Damage
Pretty self explanatory. This is the role that many people think is the only role. Direct damage and condition damage, either single targets or AoE. Pretty straightforward. Everyone does this no matter how much you try to specialize yourself away from this role.

No one is going to be just one of those roles, there is so much overlap (my Thief example also does a lot of support with invisability and lots and lots of regeneration). I would prefer to split those roles up further, but just pushed on time atm… as “Damage/Support/Control” are fairly huge umbrellas, I split “tank” into a different role from “Control” because it is one of the more unique/misunderstood roles in the game, but for example a debuffing Mesmer/Necromancer/Thief that focuses on boon removal is going to be very different from another “Control” player going for focusing on interupts/denying enemy actions, which could also be very different from another “Control” player going for lots of conditions. And seeing as how most people are going to be overlapping with several roles, one “Control” player very well might have nothing in common with another “Control” player.

Haven’t played an Engineer since BWE1, but from playing alongside and against them.. seems like their best role would be holding ground. Knockbacks, turrets, area denial.. they can be pretty kitten mean when they want to hold a point.

Don’t pay too much attention to the “damage/support/control” thing, Anet really can’t predict what the meta is going to be after release, about a year before the game came out. The roles aren’t ridged like typical [boring] Tank/DPS/Heal, but.. as I mentioned already, they’re more like combat roles in D&D where you can basically build any class to excel in any role you wish… and even make up your own specialty roles within the rule set you are using.

I don’t really get why so many people say that there are no roles but DPS in GW2. That is like saying that the only role in Dungeons and Dragons is damage, since “there are no specific roles” in D&D.

When my guild first started doing dungeons in GW2, the guild was full of DPS Warriors coming from WoW-clone MMO’s complaining/joking about anyone not using a DPS Warrior since “there are no roles in GW2, its just damage and surviving”. After guildies learned how the game actually works, and they actually diversified their classes and builds, dungeons were much, much smoother, safer, faster and therefore more profitable and pleasant.

Its not really a surprise that a tanky Warrior, balanced Guardian, full support Elementalist, and damage focused Warrior and Ranger was 100 times better at dungeons than four DPS Warriors (thinking that they are the optimal dungeon character) and a balanced Guardian (telling everyone they are a bunch of noobs).

Honestly I think the “no roles in GW2” thing is a L2P issue.

I’ve used Sword/Pistol and Greatsword since BWE1. Since that big nerf to Greatsword about a month ago, I switched the Greatsword to a Staff (thank god I didn’t finish my Volcanus before that GS nerf).

However the thing is about Mesmer weapons is that the weapon set doesn’t really tell you all that much about the build. Myself and a guildie had the exact same weapon setup, but with exception to Deceptive Evasion and Illusionist Celerity, the two Mesmers had nothing in common. Mesmer Weapons are nice in that they can be used in a variety of ways: almost all weapons can be used for Power Damage just as well as it can be used in a Condition Damage build.

So does OP actually mean there is a cookie cutter build?.. or is it just that the weapon set happens to be the same?

Seems like every day I hear yet another new ridiculous complaint about Thieves and Mesmers.

What new class…

How about get rid of the bugs from the existing classes? That’s what I would do before introducing new classes.

This is not an official thread on anything being released, just player ideas on what they would like to see.

I do not understand why people feel the need to crap on every thread that isn’t whining about something.

Well excuse me for preferring exciting options to be more developed. I’m also the guy that prefers lower number of classes with more options in D&D and other games also.

Maybe you should reevaluate who has the crap opinion before you post one.

Massively: Where Guild Wars 2 Goes Wrong

That, is why I feel that the lack of a trinity system didn’t work for me. Not because I am some rote mindless WoW addict, but because my whole gaming experience should be fun, and getting carpal tunnel syndrome constantly circle strafing and constantly hitting the dodge button and blowing every CD under the sun to stay alive against normal TRASH mobs isn’t as fun as I would have hoped.

There is a reason PvEnviroment is purportedly easy. BECAUSE it should be, the mobs are supposed to be AI, following a predictable script, and you don’t NEED to circle strafe and spam dodges because it should be unneccessary. Dungeons should be a higher skill because more ‘tactical’ placement and more teamwork should be involved, and PvP…well, that is always a different scenario.

I can see how different people can have different opinions.. but I really don’t see the point of having most enemies being so worthless that you can defeat them while half unconscious. If the enemies are easy, boring and uninteresting, then really what is the point?

I’ll just chalk it up to a difference in preference, but honestly I really liked BWE1 enemies a whole lot more. Random enemies in Beta Weekend One could kick the kitten out of any random current GW2 baddies. Enemies are already enough of a snoozefest with the current level of difficulty. There are plenty of other games out there that you can play while mostly asleep, to many people’s understanding GW2 was explicitly not going to be this normal boring style.

Those Charged Lodestones are going to the the hard part. They usually go on the Trading Post for 2 gold or so each. Personally I have the Whisperblade for my Mesmer’s sword… which has the exact same recipe except it is 250 ectos rather than 250 Charged Lodestones.

That Infinite Light is pretty kitten awesome though. Too bad about the gear treadmill getting in the way of pursuing such awesome looking skins.

Dodge, blind, interrupt or block the Cloak and Dagger. That’s where most of the P/D Thief’s initiative is going, and the out of stealth Pistol1 attack is the only way he is doing damage.

Even though he is using Pistol as a mainhand weapon, P/D likes to fight in close to get the most out of Cloak and Dagger. Having more distance on that Thief will help you, and P/D doesn’t provide many gap closers.

To my knowledge, any piece of armour or weapon you see an NPC use, players can use them as well. The question is, how do you acquire it.

Back when I was looking for sword skins for my Charr Mesmer, I noticed the sword and scoured the internet for how to acquire it. At the time, it was not known how to acquire it. However that was months ago, so perhaps a Mystic Forge recipe has been found since I set off to look for it.

Concerning the flame legion

Doesn’t the Flame Legion do what it does for power? I wouldn’t think that they would be o attached to culture, as their culture is a means to an ends. To them, seeking a higher power to lead them to “victory” is primarily about power, not because they have some sort of sentimental values for religion. When they first started seeking gods, it was about power and the ability to defeat their foes. I don’t really see how a couple hundred years is going to make the Flame Legion completely separated, never again to be united with the other legions.

The same lust for power is probably responsible for their role for females, as protecting females from rivals and danger so that they can focus on producing and raising offspring is very much normal in both the animal kingdom and warlike cultures throughout human history (in the real world). If female Charr are really more useful on the battlefield, then in time it would become more apparent, and if the Flame Legion really do lust for power, then there is no real reason not to accept females into more dangerous roles as it would result in a stronger, more powerful military.

And again with sacrifices and all, again that is about power. If the Flame Legion determined that magic using sacrifice wasn’t the best way to gain power to ensure victory, then there would be no reason to continue it.

I am not sure if the Charr have grown as soft as you may suggest. Perhaps they have, but in that case they are giving up a great amount of what makes them Charr, and their history. If the Charr truly have grown soft and are more concerned about advocating certain political ideologies than they are about being the dominant force in the land, and proving their supremacy, then they have already given up on striving for victory…. and the opening scene for the Charr would look even more like propaganda than it already does.

Personally, I hope that the Charr aren’t turning into softies more concerned with political ideologies and propaganda than they are concerned with being kittenes, and kicking kitten in the name of their pride and sovereignty.

@insanemaniac – To answer your question, Necromancers, Guardians, Warriors, Elementalists, Thieves and Mesmers.

Exactly, Retaliation is useful against a certain style of attack (fast hitting but weak attacks). Every class can be built to use this style.

Funny thing happened this evening…in HoD BL, two breakout events occurred simultaneously against us. Is this normal? Reading the release notes, I thought there would only be one at a time.

They are both active at the same time, but usually there’s only enough people to trigger one at a time.

Actually that is not entirely correct. If there is enough people to start one of the breakout events, then there are enough people to start both. All you need to do is have everyone take a couple steps over to the other NPC commander once the first once starts.

Unfortunately often seems impossible to get anyone other than guildies to do anything in unison.. it usually seems to take around 10 minutes to beg a few people to just stand near the NPC commanders. Sometimes I wouldn’t doubt if there was a total of 50 different people that were standing at the NPC commanders for a time, but then get bored, then leave… before there are 10 people with enough attention span to stand by the event start for a moment.

If you have people that actually listen to non-blue-dot-over-head commanders, then you can quickly take both north towers by having 10 people spawn both events, then split 5 people with each NPC commander.

Another reason you might not usually see both events spawned at once is because there are many WvWers that simply like to do farming trains. Farming trains/zergs don’t like taking multiple places at once, because that means that there is less loot, and each event is harder since you don’t necessarily have overwhelming numbers.

How many times can a thief stealth?

There is also a trait for gaining 2 initiative every time you enter stealth (you don’t even have to use invis yourself, when using my Mesmer a Thief guildie always says he loves it when I turn him invis as it gives him all the stealth benefits).

Another trait that gives invisibility on use of Steal, which has a base cool down of 45 seconds I believe, which can be reduced to 30 something seconds when taking the bottom line of traits.

all games have grind!

I have played many games that lack a grind, many.

GW2 is actually the first game I’ve played since Pokemon Red and Diablo2 that has grind, and that I’ve played for longer than a couple weeks. The idea that grind is a good thing is a very foreign idea to me, it seems to be almost entirely purposeless other than appealing to people that have problems with addictive behaviours… or for giving a sense of loss to those that would think of stopping their subscription. Since GW2 doesn’t have a subscription, and most of the people with problems with addictive behaviours are playing other games (ones that are better at harnessing their addiction), then there really is no reason for excessive grind to be in this game.

GW1 was not an MMORPG!
GW2 is a MMORP and need a little grind!
I’m casual but still love grind!
A small vertical progression is very good, without it the game is empty!
Grind is certainly a part of GW2, but it is at an acceptable level.
The difference between medicine and poison is the dose!

Often times these lines are stated (GW1 wasn’t an MMO, therefore GW2 needs grind, and treadmills are good)… but these statements are never, ever explained in a way that actually makes any sense.

There was a whole lot else going on in GW2 before everyone was robbed of their max level (max stats), and were forced into the treadmill if they wanted to regain those max stats. The world in general was a lot more populated, people were much more focused on legendary, or other exotic skins. Now since Anet added “something to do”, everyone is still just doing Fractals. The grind for max stats is absolutely ridiculous now…. I honestly fear that I might never have more than one character at max stats ever again.

Why pursue awesome skins, when you still don’t have the max stat gear to complete your character? “Adding something to do” by adding a gear treadmill actually destroyed the all the “things to do” that we had before.
