At least that way we know that the meta won’t change for guardian, no specialization to theorycraft..
Entirely possible, however unlikely, that the trait line will have some good stuff. It would be possible to conceive of a Zeal, Honor, Dragonhunter build with GS+Mace assuming there was something in the new traits that was better than Virtues.
Remember, you dont have to use a bow with the elite specialization. It could very well be that for PvE the specialization traits work out better with the normal weapons.
I was wondering about that myself. Guess we will have to wait on the details.

I enjoy the combat, and certainly wouldn’t call it terrible in its current state. They have done a lot of revamps since launch.
It’s actiony — closer to GW2 than any other MMO I’ve tried, but still different from what we have here. I suppose it depends on what you’re looking at getting out of it. There are a lot of skill lines available (any class can use any weapon, plus there are three class-specific skill lines and several guild related ones), and the combat requires you to dodge, block, and interrupt attacks in real-time, so the active defense component is there.
I’ll say that coming from GW2 (which trained me to use active defenses as a primary survival method), I feel pretty OP in combat in that game, but that could also be because I’m only level 25 doing open world stuff.
If you bought it around launch, you can jump in and start playing it for free now. It’s worth checking out, especially if you’ve already paid for the box.
I’ll say that the only thing I’m really missing from GW2 is the materials bank and salvage kits >.< But it wouldn’t be a TES game if you weren’t running to the bank to empty your inventory constantly :P
Tried it, it didn’t do anything for me. It would have to have some major improvements before I would think about going back to it. The only thing it did was make me want to play Skyrim again.
You can do some mountain goating and kill Frizz instead at the circular room. It’ll count forwards and grant the daily chest.
I feel so sad right now. Bad enough we have these huge debates on skipping and stacking. and how the game is “wrong” but then we have the few bits of fun content reduced to things like this…

Builds are a part of Min/maxing, so therefor are relevant to any Min/Maxing discussion. Taking an offense skill or a defensive is by its very nature a min/max situation, “Is my group good enough that I won’t need this extra projectile protection? Can slot something that will let me kill this faster?” I have to ask that before every encounter, when I am rolling on my guard.
AC was just one example of a change, and its life cycle. Originally the spider queen was a pug killer after the change, or at the very least an unprepared pug killer. It didn’t effect all of us, but there were many post on it, even a few troll post.
I wouldn’t mind the particle effects being Toned down. However that is a topic for another thread. If we can see the tells well enough to Min/Max right now, we would be able to see it then. The only thing this would effect is maybe a more casual player would be able to see an attack and not get smashed by it. That would be a good thing.
Idisagree with regards to the Fire Elemental. I feel Anet does to much hand holding for the players in open world content, which has a direction relationship with Dungeons. I can wander around open world for hours and in only the most rare instances be forced to use a defensive skill or to actually dodge. Mostly the mobs just die when I look at them.
This caries over to dungeons in a lot of ways. If the player base never has to learn the Combat system in the open world, then they never will learn it in the dungeons. They will simply do the same things they always have, not knowing why they do them.
Hence corner stacking almost a year after the FGS nerf.
In relation to what Nike Said here, The GW combat system is very deep. The counter stroke of it is that we never get to see that deepness because it gets washed down for the masses. Same point with Lupi here.
We are not, and never will be the target audience. The idea that any build/skill level can/will complete all the content that Anet releases tells us in advance that it will never have the dept or the complexity that we would like. Lupi shows us that it is possible. But it is an exception, not the rule.
Would I like to see a Lupi style boss on every dungeon path? Frell yeah, would the majority of the Guild Wars community? Heck no. The QQ on the forums would reach heights that might flood the entire planet.
These dungeons are old. Very old. Nothing is likely to change in them. I think it says something to the nature of their design that we even still bother with them at all. Either that or human greed cause its the fastest way to get the shines people want.
Anet is working on other thing with HoT, the Foundation is there however for later combat encounters to be more epic and have more factors. Much Greater variety can be created here then we could have ever done in GW1. Which was put to rest in work on GW2 because it lacked the more Active based combat system we have now was the direction Anet wanted to go. It isn’t perfect yet, but it is alot more fun.
We play with the card we have been dealt. GW 1 and GW 2 are two different games.
I had fun in GW 1, even if there were still alot of things I hated about it,
like, half the skills in GW1 were useless. There was nothing interesting about the combat system. It was your normal “If if the monk dies or gets distressed we are in trouble snore fest” or Burn though the insane amount of HP
Standard tactics for every fight, “Find NPC healer, Nuke NPC healer = Loots.” Frostmaw was just a bag of HP if I remember correctly.
But I loved its lore and its story. I loved the Question options, hard mode and content like The Underworld and FoW. These were what kept me playing GW1 for nearly 10 years.
With Luck we might see content like that at some point. Not the combat, but the lore and the story and the interesting places to visit. I would love to re-visit the Domain of Torment again. I found it alot more fun then alot of the later game stuff we have right now.

However for many people who want to play in a fun cohesive group where players have to work together the whole time to complete a mission it would be pretty awesome. Most of the trolls here I know have run these dungeons dozens if not hundreds of times.
You’d think they’d get tired of these boring lazily designed corridors by now. Demand better content people! Don’t just accept the bad content, that not even the devs themselves would be proud of.
We have ask for far better changes in the past. I have read far far better ideas. Not just “I don’t like stacking/min maxing so change it threads.”
We are tired of lazy content. We are tired of Bad content. But there is no dungeon team so no matter how many times a good idea comes up among all the bad ones it gets ignored.
Don’t you guys get tired of “pull the lever, out comes cheese… pull the lever, out comes cheese… Repeat… Etc…” You don’t want something new and challenging?

Of course we want a challenge. Its a matter of resources vs what is pratical and fun.
Case in point. Rising Dusk addressed most of these points earlier.
Most, not all, but most causal players have a very poor understanding of how combat in this game works. They run one class, and one class only. They don’t even really understand that one class. They just picked it cause it fits the theme they like most.

I recall how many post I saw about pugs getting wrecked after. There were just as many post if not more from people who said this fight became to hard. The sad part? It was just as easy as it was before.
If I watch a video on Guild Wars or any other game. I ask myself a few questions,
“Why did he bring that skill/weapon/ability? How does that help him more say X ability/weapon/skill…etc”
If more people ask why, it would be better for us all.
Example. I don’t feel the need to stack any corner on my guardian. However my buddy who plays a warrior, ask if we can’t try to push things closer to the wall so that he might be able to whirl against the wall hence keeping on target instead of going through. So we do this sometimes for him. We do it to control attacks.
Its not needed cause there are other ways. But until we get something new, there is very little “end game” PvE content outside of dungeons.
We are not against the idea of Innovations or improvements. We are however against un-needed changes that won’t accomplish anything but drive new players away or will do more harm then good.
P.S. I recall two or even one year ago when the Fire Elemental fight actually lasted long enough to be fun. These days its just a box in the daily achevs that people check off when they have to. Most of those people prefer it that way. I don’t bother with it cause its no challenge and dies before I have time turn around. Its a bad example to pick for any case in Min/maxing because it was changed to be easier for players after the NPE changes. What would happen if a brand new player walked in on the Fire Elemental fight and found it like Teq?

Asking for better AI coding isn’t asking to be similar to other games, it’s asking to raise the standard in order to match those games.

We ask for harder content and there have been better suggestions. However ask yourself. Are you really comfortable with us still being able to beat that harder content, through Min/maxing, which is what this thread was originally about? When the rest of the community is still struggling with dungeons?

What I’ve been asking for is that Anet redo their AI and level design coding in minor ways to give more depth and complexity to their game. You’ve got a fourth gen MMO with second gen AI.
My point exactly. There are higher standards in video games today. The action needs to be visible, and game play is more important than visuals. Combat needs depth and strategy, and not this 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 spam that we see in GW2.
That 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 in this boss picture is a world Boss. And a very low level one. Would I like to see it made into a Teq? Sure I would, I would relish the challenge. Most player’s just want their loot however.
Of course if the dungeons are changed, a lot of how people play the dungeons will also change. Instead if being able to rely on their gear to allow then to solo run from Point A to Point B kill one monster and grab a chest, groups will have to be more cohesive and move strategically.
I desperately want to see this happen. I long for strategic dungeons, rather than the sloppy corridors filled with mindless trash that we have now.
Is that going to change the Min/maxing meta? It’s a whole other animal.
You can call them sloppy corridors or deep epic vine covered jungle floors, leading to trap filled treasure hoards of rich history and a boss like Teq or Lupi guarding a legendary weapon.
Once the dungeon community knows how to burn it down they will. Then we will be right back here addressing "Well he can min/max and do it faster then I can! Fix this Anet. Its not right that I can’t do what he does in full offensive glass cannon spec with my full nomad ele.
So far in every dungeon I’ve run the strategy is the same. Everyone follows the one guy who knows the map, we find a little corner then stand on top if each other and spam all our skills while standing there.
It turns dungeons into a mindless and pointless affair. Most of the dungeon’s contents are never seen or experienced by players and player skill is not rewarded as there is no skill involved in standing still on top of everyone else and just pressing the 1-9 keys.
You are 100% right. There is no skill involved when you are being carried through everything.

lol, what I see in dungeons is people auto-kicking and booting non-level 80’s. Lots of demands to verify full berserker gear and occasionally random hate and mockery of newer players.
Just so the toxic elitists know before they start saying I must never run dungeons, I got all ascended gear and I’ve run the dungeons hundreds of times. Even though I know the dungeons inside out, I am still very frustrated by the “Meta”. People should be able to play any build any use any type of gear. If players actually supported each other and played through the dungeon and understood if newer players died instead of kicking them or just leaving them behind as they run the dungeon the dungeons wouldn’t be such a frustrating experience for most newer and casual players.
I can understand if you don’t like the meta. But you are throwing around alot of hate in these forums towards people who do not deserve it. Most people here run in guilds that do not pug and are there for not in any way responsible for the actions you’re describing.
It is bad that many new players get kicked, and the dungeon forums are full of people who do their best to help and teach. Almost all the guides and wiki come from the efforts of players here, because they are the ones who log in most of the hours. I don’t count myself among that number. I am a bit above average at best.
People here even log in and help people complete dungeons for the first time. I helped out with a new group doing HoTW story just a few days ago, because someone needed it and was not able to find a group for it.
So relax, we are not your enemy, odds are you will probably never be in a group with any of us.
The main reason, I’ve usually felt, is that people are aggressive and nasty about pushing min/max attitudes and are severely exclusionary.
It’s not necessarily rational, but nobody likes being excluded, and double nobody likes being insulted (being called bad, foolish, etc) for not playing to some Type-A personality’s version of the game.
Amen brother! Too much l33t attitude being shown by people. It scares away newer and more casual players and keeps the whole community from being friendly. If a player doesn’t play enough to have all ascended berserker gear, it doesn’t mean they should be shunned or insulted. They may actually have a life. Be welcoming to all players and support each other
You will find that the dungeon community as a whole is very friendly and cool. No one here joins a group that wishes to fully clear a dungeon and tells them they can’t or not to play the way they wish to. However on the other side there are nearly a dozen post in about how our game mode should be changed because people simply do not like it or it doesn’t fit their ideal or more commonly they do not understand it.

Maybe the problem is, you play “exclusively necro”, a class which is infamous for its lack of team utility, and thus you don’t understand the nuances of playing a class with lots of team utility like guard, or mes? “There’s something incredibly boring about tweaking your character to only maximize the damage output.” – any good fractal guardian player would laugh at that statement. For any given fight you have to choose whether to prioritize blocks, stability uptime, reflect uptime, condition cleanse, or full offense. This includes triats, utilities and weapon choices. Mesmer is similar, but you also are responsible for boon stripping in cases like ettin for harpy fractal, molten facility, dredge, etc.
You’re also using a dps check encounter in a lvl 35 dungeon that is 2 years old as your primary example in assessing the depth of the combat system. I think everyone would agree its a pretty shallow and boring encounter. But its not really representative of higher-end pve where minmaxing is someone relevant. Fractals, ta aether – that’s the direction anet’s development has taken, and the encounters in those dungeons demand a much broader range of defense and utility then any of the at-launch dungeons.
This and then some. As a main guardian, I change my build frequently to make sure I have the best tools to keep my group on its feet and not taking a dirt nap. Could I run the same build in ever encounter? Yes. I did this before we could re-trait for every fight, I had to make due with what small changes I could make to my build. But now that I can change my entire build out side of combat I do, and it has improved my game alot.
I suppose I could still be ok if I didn’t, but why would I settle for ok. When it would be more efficient to make changes to traits/utilities/weapons make me better at my job?

Yeah, obviously it’s more efficient to bypass the whole dungeon instead of actually playing it. Seeing as I personally know dozens of friends who simply won’t play dungeons, and many more who quit playing the game altogether because of the current Meta when it comes to playing group content, I can tell you it seriously hurts the game. For every one player who is willing to do a dozen stacking runs, there’s three players who refuse to even enter the dungeon because it’s all about stacking and running then leaving anybody who dies behind. Where’s the teamwork and group play enjoyment there? It’s basically a every man for himself free for all run until you stack then bypass more mobs and leave behind anyone who either isn’t trained for run survival or doesn’t have the best gear available.
GW2 has lost many many players due to this unhealthy play style. Dungeons are supposed to be a cooperative group experience, but the way they are played now is anything but
Maybe you and these dozens of friends could play together? No one is forcing you to join our groups and play our way. So why do you insist on having the game changed so we have to play your way? Not that I doubt you know people, but a meta is created and maintained by the majority. It isn’t a meta unless it is accepted by the majority.

The sword and I have a love hate relationship. I love it, it hates me.
With the changes coming I won’t be using it nearly as much. The main reasons being the lack of symbol (since the trait changes). What we need is to have the AA changed, and we need to get number 3 changed around.
Possibly adding a symbol to it in some form to benefit from the new traits and make it actually block projectiles (rather then absorb) so that it will work with the older traits. . .

Why is it that every time I pug a path, I can bet gold that the guardians who join us will be trying to run a staff? I was doing CM the other night, using a PS warrior. I think a better fix would have been to seriously nerf reflection duration rather than make ranged attacks unreflectable.
This would have rewarded skilled reflection use.
At one point I would have been upset at the idea of nerfing reflection damage. But honestly, I use my WoR and Shield for protection and support. Sure its nice that WoR does damage to whatever is shooting at me. I
It is funny to watch a ranger drop himself in PvP or WvW when she does a rapid fire in zerker armor. In PvE, I think the fact I can block the attacks by far outways the extra damage. Everytime Anet changes an enounter to be unblock or unreflectable I hate the game a little more.

I run with two or three guildies due to the loss of players from lack of content. So we have to pug the last two spots. I myself main a guard and always have my greatsword except for the most rare exceptions.
And no, pugging isn’t fun at all. Sometimes I have to pug all 4 spots
I actually got a group that failed the bomb room on CoF path two the other night cause an ele died due to fire then mist formed off so we could get the bomb without resing her. When she went down down the warrior decided it was a better use of time to res her from death (despite her telling him to go run bombs) rather then run the rest of the bombs. And when the other ele died there was still a bomb setting there no one even picked up to run

I’ve occasionally heard this argument and it’s complete bull.
While it may drive literally a handful of people away, it’d draw a lot more people in which benefits everyone. It solves the 2 biggest issues, stagnation and coverage, while fixing a lesser issue, guildies not being able to play together (ques). Fix that any which way (which a system like this does), more people will play.
Now unless a player prefers to PvD with nobody on the map, then no, this system will not benefit them at all.
I have heard those arguments before and they are bull.
Why should I bother to upgrade or defend anything if the overflow map just fades away when the population drops?
Why should I care about playing with my guild if there is nothing to do besides karma train like people do in EoTM?
Edit: We have been through this countless times. Overflow ideas never get much support from the WvW community, outside a few people. honestly I am not sure why I bothered to respond. I don’t feel like going down this same road again with the same arguments for and against it.

grins We can’t even get people to stop making the nerf zerker/meta threads. They are convinced we just spam one and burn stuff down. Any system that raises the bar is not going to go over well with the casual community. if its automatic and they have no say in it, then it will be even worse.
Truth told the people i see with the highest AP totals are usually the worse ones who join my groups in dungeons. (I am referring to anyone above 20k, in my experience)
Not to mention such a system would make it more difficult to go back and help newbies with dungeons and such.
So I’ve been reviewing what people are saying about Guardian, and I think it’s probably in a pretty good state, although there are some false choices available in the trait selections and Scepter/Sword really don’t pick up nearly as much as the other weapons. Scepter Smite not being a symbol is pretty harsh given the natural synergy other weapons get with their symbols, for instance.
Guardian
- Adept Zeal is a false choice; Fiery Wrath is always the best choice. Zealous Scepter is horribly bad and the Retaliation when Aegis ends is far too weak to consider. Zealous Scepter should apply 1 stack of might for 5 seconds when you deal damage with a Scepter equipped, no ICD. That would actually synergize with things like Smite Condition and a well-placed Smite.
- Right Hand Strength should reduce cooldowns for Sword and Scepter, not just Sword.
- Adept Radiance is another false choice because Right Hand Strength is always what you want. Again, Retaliation on heal is nowhere near worth a trait slot.
- Shield is still bad compared to Focus. The shield trait should apply Aegis to all allies affected by Shield skills to really be worth taking anywhere (and echo that to the bubble on revive trait).
Some other notes about things that are still bad and will never see the light of day that we should mention here so the devs see it.
- Radiant Retaliation is another false choice and needs to actually do something other than swap governing stats or it will never be worth taking. A condition build will literally never opt to have Retaliation scale with Power over Amplified Wrath.
Other than the fact that Scepter and Sword definitely need something to ensure they don’t get lost from builds because they lack symbols, the Guardian changes are overall pretty welcome. Right Hand Strength helping scepter cooldowns and Zealous Scepter being an actually good trait to use over Fiery Wrath would be the biggest helps here. Of course, Smite becoming “Symbol of Smiting” would also be pretty great. Sword will still need some DPS boosting or another trait looking at it to ensure that it is relevant even without a symbol.
Maybe replace Empowering Might (weak low duration might with an ICD) with something like this:
Vengeful Arbiter: When you critical hit with a Sword equipped, Flashing Blade is recharged. Sword attacks deal 10% more damage. 8 second ICD. (Won’t trigger unless Flashing Blade is on CD)
Fun trait that would help with vuln stacking in PvE and offer engage mobility in WvW/PvP but only if already in combat with a sword. Sword is weak in PvP anyway

I agree with you on almost all the points. Not sure how I feel about Vengeful Arbiter though. I think I would just rather see Zealots Defense replaced with a symbol. I know this might take away form the fluid feel of the sword. Given that I almost never used it outside of PvP I wouldn’t miss it much.
While we are talking about guardian sword. It would be nice if they would look at the Auto Attack chain. Maybe finally convince them that the projectile on Auto Attack 3 needs to be looked at.
AP do not equal skill.
Anet takes the easy route with Bandaid fixes. Rather then addressing issues that need fixed. Hence the changes to be be unblockable or nonreflectable. It isn’t the first time we have talked about the inconsistency of it all.

Avoid the shield. Its not much use at all in pve. I tend to run with both GS /sword Focus or hammer with scepter focus on my alternate. Depending on my group and encounter.

P.S. You don’t have to run zerker with it if you don’t want. But pay attention to the build/skill suggestions for each encounter.
Are you on a NA or EU server?
You might be able to file a ticket for the harvesting tools under support at the top. That is your best option for getting your tools back.

Read several good post on the necro forms about how to fix and include them in the zerker meta. Lets just hope Anet has paid them some attention.

However, there is an important factor that no one is looking at. Those guilds are doing closed raids because they want to, because it is fun for them. The more people troll them and ruin the game experience for them, the more likely it is for a WvW guild to pick up and move to another server that might accommodate them better.
This may be correct but statistically incorrect. Most guild leave for a bunch of other reasons, first of, to fight other guilds that they have not yet fought.
I know of none that left because a few pugs followed them.Secondly – to pick up on that statistical part again that was mentioned way above on a post – we have to differ between fights and gvgs. It is a myth that gvg contributes in any way to the wvw game even if it “keeps another guild busy”. wvw is always a 3 party game but gvg is always only 2 opponents. So while a gvg is always giving massive advantage to the 3 party on the map. Especially in prime time when most gvg happen you have half our map and another group gvg somewhere while the 3rd party basically blobs. Combined with the fact that gvg people dont defend and on top partially also call fake incs on other maps to get others to leave the map so they can get even more of their own in, they are certainly not contributing to the wvw game mode.
Regarding scrims, it is a matter of reputation of the guild. And that reputation must be earned with the community. This happens automtically if you are running on your own while still being willing to coordinate with the others. Guild could even contribute one of their own players to lead the pugs….no idea why the never do that.
In the end if a guild does not earn rep then they have to life with the fact that the “everyone can do as they want” is a two sided sword that swings both ways.
True, guilds do move for many reasons. And I am not defending any kind of behavior that interferes with peoples enjoyment of their game. The sword does swing both ways, but I also recall a post that said “followed the guild with a tag to get more pugs on them” I find that to be pretty offensive, as they are just trolling for no reason.
With 4 maps there ought to be enough room for all (every play style), even on our prim time I don’t see that there are extremely long anymore, outside of reset and at least one map is always open to join. This may change with a new season or HoT, not sure on that as of yet.
As people have stated your server is your team, and while most raid are open I don’t understand how a person could enjoy tagging along with a guild that is doing their best to ditch them at ever turn.
I am trying to be a voice of reason. There are two others servers that we should be fighting against, not our own.

Then when we see the post, “no one stays on our server..yada yada yada”, you really only have your self to blame if you. I mean there are 4 maps, I am sure you can find a pug-mander somewhere who would love to have you following him if you feel the need to join a larger group.

Point taken. It isn’t the first time I had a ranger not mange his pet correctly. Not sure of the exact day this run was, bout a week ago maybe? If I was wrong I was wrong.
Still I don’t know for sure if he was clicking to if he really was clicking Stow (which at the time I took for him trying to hide it), or trying to pull it back to us, he could have at least swapped to his second pet if nothing else.

I generally run with two close friends.
One mains a warrior, the other an ele while I main a guard
We decided to do AC path 1
This day the warrior wasn’t on just me and the ele. And another guildie who was learning to play an Ele. So i ran warrior in stead when a guard joined us. Then we got a ranger, which I don’t mind. I got nothing against them if they play well.
We get to Kholer, the ranger lets his pet off the leash. We type in party, "Control your pet. " He then says "I keep clicking Stow but it doesn’t do anything "
Despite this we manage to get him to 10% ish health when everyone goes down.
I remark in party chat that “this is why I hate rangers” I got a big F you, then the ranger left. Followed by the guard, we posted again got another guard and a mesmer
This time we blew through it, even though the guard was PVT. At the end he was like “Wow that was a smooth run.” I was thinking….if you only
P.S. ranger had over 15k ap points

Any staff guardian outside to TA lawn-mowing would be my most hated. I often cringe when another guardian (guardian is my main) joins my party cause 90% of the time I know they are gonna be camping staff.
