In closing, boxed expansions can expand the progression of the world and the game in a much broader sense in a shorter amount of time. It also provides more than one path to take; meaning you can enjoy another area of the game while other players explore another path of story/map/race/etc.

Discredit boxed expansions all you want, but there are many of us who prefer that type of release versus the current living world.

What that tells me is that gamers are sheep who need to be constantly hyped by the “next shiny thing” or they’ll be easily distracted by the “next shiny thing” that catches their eye, then spend months complaining about having nothing to do THERE before the NEXT “next shiny thing” catches their eye.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

I’ve seen the content locusts come and go, and frankly, if they never come back, that’s perfectly fine with me. I certainly won’t shed a tear if they NEVER release a traditional expansion.

Completely agree.

Lol…..“content locusts”……what a perfect description!

So I’m really curious, and I’m only partially trying to rile the hornet’s nest here…

What specific content does everyone feel ArenaNet should include in an expansion?

Remember that a wide majority of those who participate on this forum do not want any level increase or gear “treadmill” progression, so you should probably consider these concepts off the table. And raids are currently being discussed in a CDI, so you should probably consider this is something they’d already add.

So what else?

Oh man, you’ll get a slew of different opinions on this. Seems like ‘content’ means something completely different to just about everyone who has ever argued for it on this forum. And then there are those that just ignore parts of the game, as that is not content to them. Whatever. I guarantee you’ll get absolutely no general consensus to your question. The answers will be as varied as the players.

Oh yea, and if you even slightly support Anet on how they’re doing anything…..anything at all…..you’ll get the Fanboy label. Gasp!!!! Like that even means anything anymore……lol

But yea, you’ll rile the hornet’s nest on this……well done!

If they have not played in a while, between living story and feature packs there has been a good amount of content added.

I’ve tried. Doesn’t have nearly the same punch as a properly marketed expansion. I hate to point to WoW but they were adding content constantly as well but what draws everyone back time and again? Expansions.

So if the 4 added story lines had been marketed as an ‘expansion’, with a zippy new box and all sorts of hype, and you had been charged 50+ bucks for it, you would now be happy?

No thanks. I will take Anet’s method of adding content. Doesn’t cost the user any $$, and if I don’t like one or more of them, I don’t feel like I wasted any $$.

If I was going to grind for one or the other, Hoax, I would skip ascended and just grind for legendary. In fact, I guess that is what I am doing, although I don’t intentionally grind for it. I have a few ascended trinkets I am wearing, but if I upgrade anything else, it will be to legendary.

Try out all aspects for the game…..don’t expect anything from it…..just find out what you enjoy and don’t enjoy. Don’t be afraid to talk to and ask questions of people in the game, as most players are friendly and willing to help.

And stay away from these forums(unless you have a specific question or problem) for a few weeks while you learn about the game. Develop your own experiences and opinions about the game, rather than letting these forums influence you.

Have fun and welcome to GW2!

Is boycott the answer?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Teon.5168

I have this theory that even if there was a universal list of problems that everyone agreed on (as one can consider one thing a problem and another not), and some how anet fixed everything on said list and using even the players suggestions, then I can garuntee the next day after that miraculous patch, ANOTHER LIST would pop up, and the cycle of complaints would begin anew, with ironically some being based on the players themselves own suggestions that may have not worked.

You can make lists, you can keep them however long you want and point fingers back at it to prove a point. But people need to understand that its NOT a flip of a switch to fix things (I will agree on being updated on the situation though and any progress). Eadly, it can take months to yeas. Changing the smallest thing in an mmo can have a ripple effect on many other systems of the game, and if one breaks, you may have to trash it and start over.

As for the whole “I don’t work for arenanet, why should I suggest fixes?” Fine, dont. I honestly don’t care. If I like a game, and want it yo succeed, I’ll help. If devs choose to ignore the advice, that’s fine. I may not be giving the correct advice cause I don’t truly know the situation, or the devs are dead set on their own paths and ignore everyone else.

Games are meant for entertainment and fun. If you are finding yourself angrier at the game, then vent in a constructive manner and explain. If it goes unresolved, then stop, take a break for awhile, check back later (that means yes, even not returning to forums, as you still aren’t letting the anger fade). After a month or more, if it hasn’t improved, then cut the cord. Stop torturing yourselves

Imo, this post states it all perfectly.

Don’t take the game so seriously where you can’t back away from it and these forums and just let your frustration cool. If you spend more time being frustrated than having fun in the game, then you need to take an extended break, and/or find a game that is more fun for you.

If you can’t do it in exotic gear, you won’t be able to do it in ascended gear. It’s all about technique and builds, not about stats.

In fact, the biggest problems with those events for most people is they’re running around a zerker gear and so die faster, particularly without enough condition removal.

On a similar note, I never had any fun with all the Toxic content we saw last year, and sill remains in a few places. It was all so difficult that you apparently needed ascended gear. All I have at this point is level 80 exotic, so I was out gunned by so much that it wasn’t even a starter. Hey that’s fine. They build it and I can decide whether or not to participate. So far there are still places that I’ve found where a poor level 80 with only exotic gear can have fun.

Ok, it is pretty obvious now that you’re just trolling.

No. No he’s not really about how rough Toxic events were. I had a lot of problems with some iterations of the events, since it seemed a large amount of the mobs spawned were Veteran and if a group so much as ran past I’d see Elites.

I was a ranger, in full Exotics. The Toxic Alliance kicked my tail regularly and would make it relatively hard to beat the events by the time limits.

I suspect this is because they’re not balanced so one solo player can take it. Much like how War in Kryta was balanced almost entirely with HM capable people in mind.

I am a ranger, too, in full exotics, and while the toxic events could be tough, you could manage a lot of them with just 1 or 2 friends. But it was his comment about ascended gear being so much better than exotic gear, which is just not true. I don’t know, either the OP is a completely clueless player, or is just trolling and baiting with this thread. I tend to believe the latter.

If it is the first that is true, then ascended gear won’t make a dang bit of difference…lol.

Here are some great examples of selective amnesia and denial

“Fractals of the Mists” is a set of dungeon paths, that did not exist when the game was released.

If your response is “Fractals is not a Dungeon”, then what is it?

Yes, FotM is included under the umbrella term “dungeons” as far as terminology is concerned. However, in terms of content, a fractal is far from a dungeon. It’s like a tiny bit of a dungeon:

A dungeon has several paths, each with a series of bosses, an multi-part narrative, and a large, complex map. There are associated rewards (tokens/skins/unique items) specific to the dungeon, and a theme tying together several sets of encounters.

A fractal is a single boss, a tiny (usually) linear map, no specific rewards, and no narrative.

A set of four fractals is considered equivalent to a single dungeon path (except that FotM has far worse rewards per time). A dungeon typically consists of 4-5 paths.

Since launch, we’ve seen 5 new fractals and one new dungeon path, and also lost a dungeon path.

Net addition to dungeon content: 5 fractal instances. A little more than one dungeon path worth of content in two years. About a quarter of a dungeon.

If you occasionally run fractals or dungeons and aren’t sick to death of them yet, good for you!

Those of us who regularly run them want more. It’s commonplace to solo the hardest “endgame” dungeon. There’s something wrong with that — more challenging content is needed.

tl;dr Sure, “no new dungeons” is an oversimplification. But what has been added is barely more than a single dungeon path, and that’s just not enough to keep that aspect of the game interesting for the players who enjoy it.

IMO, that’s a great example of changing the definition of something just so that it’s existance can be denied, something that is becomeing a plague on these boards. A dungeon is not ‘defined’ by having 4 or 5 long paths, in an MMO a dungeon is simply a bit of instanced content, that is designed for a group, and generally ends with some sort of boss fight and a reward chest.

Fractals of the Mists ‘is’ a dungeon. Every single ‘set’ of Fractals that culminates in a boss fight, a reward and a choice to leave, is a dungeon ‘path’. Every single possible combination of fractals in a set is a ‘different’ dungeon path. It doesn’t matter if some other games do it differently, that doesn’t mean that the definition of a dungeon changes.

If people stopped complaining by denying the existance of things, with grand sweeping statements that are actually not true, then us detestable ‘White Knight Fanboys’ – as some people like to call us when we don’t agree with the attempts to rewrite history – would actually listen to what you say. But for some reason some of you would rather deny that anything has changed at all, than admit that the ANet developers have actually written a LOT of new content.

It’s not true that there has been no new dungeon content. The actual truth is that there has not been enough new dungeon content, to suit you.

It’s not true that there has been no new end game content. The actual truth is that there has not been enough new end game content, of the type you want to play, to suit you.

As a game developer (no tin the same league as GW2), I can say without any lie whatsoever, that when you read pages of people complaining that you’ve not done anything (when in fact you’ve done a lot), it doesn’t provide that little kick you needed to try harder (not that you needed to try harder).

What it does it it slowly burns you out, and makes you less interested in developing new content.

Very well said, Kaz.

Why GW2 just isn't working

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Teon.5168

There are some things to learn, and apply from gw1, however, it usually gets caught in gw1 vs gw2 instead of talking about what is strong, or what would transfer over well to gw1, and how to transfer it over.

I’ll give my opinion as someone who has played both Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2.

They are completely separate games. The feel, the goals, the systems… there is really nothing “similar” in the games, aside from the lore.

Talking about transitioning things from GW1 to GW2 just seems like a bad idea to me. GW2 has taken on a life of it’s own. It isn’t “the sequel to GW1”, instead it’s “that MMO that relies heavily on dodging and combat that actually makes realistic sense”.

If you really want a game that’s more like GW1, then start with a game that’s already close to it. Don’t take what people love about GW2 and twist it to fit what you think the “sequel” to GW1 should be like.

Maybe Guild Wars 3 will be closer to Guild Wars 1 than it is to 2. If so, then good for you. You’ll get the game you want. But me? I like GW2 how it is. I don’t want it to be fit into a mold just to be more like its “predecessor”. I like my game how it is, don’t ruin it for me in the name of nostalgia and/or legacy.

Well said….and I agree completely.

Nostalgia is one thing, but missing functionality that wouldn’t hurt the game confused me.

Replaying key missions
Saving/Sharing your entire builds
Selectable instances

How would these things break GW2 for people?

A lot of the stuff I miss from GW can’t be in GW2 simply because of how the lore of the world works, for the moment at least (/cough Dervish! /cough ), but there was nice functions that the previous game had that were great. Also, refining things in Gw2 like what choice actually means, how that functions wouldn’t hurt the game either.

Multi-class set ups, while missed, aren’t something I’d like to see.

*on a side note they could probably drop a Dervish class into the game and it wouldn’t require that much adjusting: seeing as how many weapons default attack hits multiple foes, its skills have a positive and negative effect (damage and heal), they have true Avatars , etc, but that’s just me. *

Saving/sharing builds is an interesting concept. I think that might work.

I have also thought that there are many other things that could be shared account wide without hurting the game…..such as skill points……(or has that been done, as I have taken a break from the game for a few weeks) Thats the best thing about this game, imo……you can take a break for a few weeks if you want to and just come back and take off where you left off with no penalties(albeit having to log in for the ls stuff)

Some interesting things could be done account wide that would only improve things, imo.

Anet should run an adopt-a-dev for gw1 program so the team can experience all the things that players loved and give them a better development direction.

You can’t be serious. What game out there has the kind of resources/staff/time to commit to such a hair brained idea??? If they did what you suggest, the trolls would come out of the woodwork and nothing would ever be accomplished in developing the game.

What can make WvW as good as DAoC?

in WvW

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

Q: What can make WvW as good as DAoC’s?

A: Rose-colored glasses and a time machine.

I’m not being sarcastic. The RvR concept implemented in DAoC was in a different era.

I loved DAoC and the RvR there. Still my all-time favorite MMO; and I have no illusions about the balance issues (52 classes at one point) and the problems that ToA created. (Yes, I was on the internals board.)

First, there was no such thing as server transfers. If you wanted to play on a different realm you rerolled from scratch. And PvE leveling, then releveling RRs was painful. Or you bought a “used” account, and whatever reputation went with it (which back then, was everything.) Let’s not even talk about the weapon leveling process that erupted from ToA.

The population was incredibly small compared to today’s averages. (300k at peak).

And “coverage” back then meant that someone scheduled a 3 or 5 AM surprise relic raid when everybody else was sleeping.

And as for maps, they weren’t even trying to be balanced. Most of the fighting took place in the large, open, flat areas of Emain, affectionately known as “the golfcourse”.

And do we really want to go back to paying for gate repairs as well as having to haul lumber while encumbered? I know I don’t.

Those are most of the significant differences. Not all are good ones. Yes, realm pride and community there was amazing. That sense carried forward into this game’s implementation of RvR in some small measure.

As much as I believe server transfers are an issue (and have said I don’t believe characters that have stepped into WvW ought to be able to transfer), it’s a different era, and transfers have been a game industry norm now for almost a decade.

So yes, there are things that can be done to improve GW2’s WvW… but it needs to be a step forward refining what currently exists. And the current design implementation already includes server transfers which can’t be undone. I can’t see throwing that out to take a step back towards DAoC.

/turns discussion back towards details such as siege, etcetera

Completely agree. I loved DaoC, but GW2 is a much better game, imo.

Your comment about ToA and imbalance in DaoC is so true…..and let us also not forget the absolutely absurd CC in DaoC. DaoC was a great game for its time, but so many people seem to forget about all the problems it had. WvW in this game needs some improvements, yes, but again, I agree with you….take steps forward, and not backwards towards DaoC.

As for getting rid of certain siege gear in this game, I completely disagree. All of the siege gear serves a purpose. I see complaints about how that sort of gear destroys even fights between a couple of warring groups…..well, so do zergs…..so let’s get rid of them, too? WvW is NOT pvp…..you want even group fights…..go there.

It’s really amazing to see all of you discuss something that will never happen.

Umm.. You started this. What did you think would happen?

I had hoped that people will come to understand.

But it’s more fun to whine and complain!

This is already in game with consummables/trinkets/rewards that provide xp, magic find, karma, and such bonuses for limited amounts of times. They show up as drops, rewards, and are also buyable on the TP and in the gem store……can also be had in guilds with certain guild bonuses.

I’ll be fine with this game having mounts, so long as:

1.) They DO NOT provide any form of boost.

and 2.) I have a toggle option to hide them all.

This sounds entirely reasonable.

Agreed…that sounds very reasonable. And being able to toggle them off would solve any sort of performance hogging issues.

One question, though? If you could toggle them off, would that then show other players with mounts hovering in the air in silly sorts of riding positions with nothing under them? Hmmmm, I kind of like that idea……would be silly looking absurdness…

Honestly this is a post I thought about doing myself. Every week there is three or four new threads talking about needing mounts in game. We don’t need them. It would be just like Farming Flats.5370 said, slow the kitten servers down. Do people not realize this. Is it that hard to understand.

So because they can’t update their technology, we shouldn’t have a feature that many have been clamoring for?

What’s your definition of “many”? The few here who have posted about it? Ok, so that’s maybe a very optimistic 30 people. Yea, with that many demanding it, I guess you’re right…..lol.

Fwiw, I have heard very few players in game even mention them. I have a feeling that it is probably just wishful thinking that ‘many have been clamoring for it’. Mounts are an old school way of traveling in old school style mmos, and imo, that’s where they belong. Now, I wouldn’t have any problem with mounts being just cosmetic and only allowed in major cities…..people could ride around on their shinys for all to see without mucking up the larger parts of the world.

Also, I would assume that the devs have much higher priorities in game than mounts. I really doubt if we’ll see them anytime soon, if ever. People already complain about lag and performance issues……mounts would only make that a ton worse.

I main a ranger too and I’ve never had problems. I’ve only got owned on WvW against thiefs. Another good way to level up is Edge of the Mists.

I am with ya on thieves…..lol…..I really suck against them on my ranger in WvW…..everything else I do fairly decent against. Fun class to play in WvW, imo…..just gotta know your limitations, have really good situational awareness, and use the terrain, especially if you’re using a bow as one of your weapon sets.

And bigtime 10+ on the Edge of the Mists comment, OP. If you don’t mind getting in with the zerg, you can easily get several levels in an hour or two in EotM, even when your character is a very low level.

When it comes to your story line, it’s best to get a few levels ahead of it before doing it…makes it a bit easier and doable solo. If you still have trouble doing it, get a friend to join you and help with the story.

And as others have said here, do everything else in the world to level quicker. Hearts, events, map exploration, reviving downed npcs, gathering, viewpoints, doing dailies, etc., are all good ways to get your level up pretty quickly. Then do your personal story when you get at the appropriate level or above. Heck, I have a couple lowbie alts that are a good 10-30 levels ahead of their personal storyline……I just do it when I feel like it…lol. Everything else I do for leveling.

And ignore the Ranger naysayers. (Draknar’s post above on those naysayers is spot on)They’re a fun class to play. Equip it however you like and learn as you go what weapon sets best suit your playstyle. Most of all, try everything in the game, and have fun!

Yep always stay ahead of your personal storyline lvl.
Have my ranger at 80, all ascended and then made a Guardian (lvl 80 all ascended). I always go back to the ranger. Was working up a warrior—meh. Now I have started a Mes—-it’s more fun to play than guard and war.

I also have an 80 mesmer, guardian, and ele…..and I always return to my 80 ranger, as well. Am working on a 60 something warrior, and they’re ok……but am not sure why some rave about them so much……as you said….meh. The Mesmer is very interesting to play……gotta really know your weapon sets, specials, clones, and such to play it well….tough character to play efficiently….which makes it a lot of fun, imo. Am also working on a lowbie Necro…..that’s an interesting one, as well. But yea, I invariably return to my 80 ranger main….love that character.

Good luck with the Mes, My main is a Mes, great fun but be aware half the skills do not work ……… Sword / Focus #3 is my most hated non functional & #5 not following the mob..

Although, YAY Portals lol

My main is my 80 ranger, but I also have an 80 mesmer…..and yea, they’re tricky to play well…..and definitely agree on the YAY Portal….lol.

I seriously doubt if 90% of the wps will be removed or rendered useless. I do think that some of them will be compromised or made useless……and I think this will add to the intrigue and tactics used in fighting this new evil. I like the idea and am looking forward to logging in tonight after work!!

I can’t even begin to say how refreshing it is to see threads on this board with players talking about and consumed with ideas, paths, problems, what is really happening, etc on this vine thing. I have been out myself to just check waypoints to see what is happening and where. So cool to see quite a few of us so immersed in the story…Anet has done a really good job on this one, imo.

So fun to just try and figure out what is happening and where the true threat is going to appear, and what is being done to the wps……so cool….so cool!!!!

How many exotics do you find in a week?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

Well i do kill lots of champs also. When the old Frostgorge train was running i was there. Now i do events and temples in Orr. Since the megaserver rolled out i’ve gotten TWO exotics. I play daily. My magic find is a base of 188 plus i use foods and boosters and banners. I sure would love to see anything other than green garbage for a change.

Wow. This really does make me think i should delete my whole account and start a new one that maybe gets the LUCK ROLL. I’m angry, frustrated and thinking the developers should have a better reward system.

Think about this : with all the exotics I get, not a kittening precursor.

I have friends that very rarely get any exotics yet in under a year they got 2 precursors.

It’s like almost winning the lottery every day. Except that you are always missing the last 2 numbers. Over and over again.

I tried the MF. I gave up. Because if 50 major sigils can’t even give me 1 superior, I don’t think I have any chances with obtaining a precursor…but I did get a level 78 weapon from 4 level 80 >.>
Luck in this game is everywhere. And it sucks. You are either really lucky and can buy whatever you want or your not and have to “farm”.

(I have 144 MF, and barely ever use MF foods and buffs)

I don’t know many other players who have gotten a whole lot of precursors while playing. At least with guildies I know and other players I have known…..I haven’t been in direct contact with anyone that has gotten good precursor drop rates. I only hear about it here……
