16 hours of play in T1 (so far)

I have no lag problems on Tarnished Coast, a NA T1 server. And compared to the T8 server that I transferred from, the difference on wvw is a night and day difference. I absolutely love it!!!!

And when it gets too blobby or I don’t want to wait in the que(weekends and friday nights after resets) then I will go do pve stuff and have fun with guildies or other friends…….and I do that with my old guild from Kaineng.

But I gotta say……the wvw on a T1 server, imo, is far superior to a lowly T8 server.

Better Crafting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

edit:
after a bit of pondering, i think i have found the issue with your problem. I believe what OP regards as bound items, are what he bought off NPC (with karma or gold).

Actually I was referring to bound items in general, but mostly crafted bound items.

My reasoning against things players craft being bound is that they worked hard to get the materials to craft something (or spent alot of gold in most cases) so they should be able to share/sell everything they craft.

Another thing I strongly believe in is that players should be able to craft ANYTHING they are able to craft for themselves for another player IF they wish to do so, that is something in a lot of MMO’s that I’ve played that are a part of what make them so fun and attract players who would play for crafting and stuff.

one example would be someone I know who doesn’t really play much, they tell me all the time that they only really play to craft and to help craft for others. but seeing as how the crafting is so restrictive they are very limited in this regard.

If the crafting was more free and players were able to share more things in game (crafted and not) It would attract more players who it doesn’t currently.

Sharing stuff is fun and good! Don’t limit us in this! saying unbinding things would mess up the TP or what not is not true (yeah maybe for some things formerly bound for a small time) but it would quickly fix it self quickly, it’s constantly changing and would be fine.

Some very good ideas, imo. And fwiw, yea, I got several crafters.

An idea for legendary armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Most casual players won’t play like a pro, because they can’t.
For most players, ascended stuff is already the long term goal, and even that seems impossible for many.

Why do people think there needs to be a long term goal for the pros? This game does not cater to anyone with skills by any content that is ever added.

Casual/pro???? lmao…….

Pro, as in professional, means that you’re making money from playing this game, which I doubt is what you really mean. Maybe pro to you just means countless hours in front of a computer monitor, with no other real world responsibilities.

Lots of current casual players used to be real hardcore players, and now chose to be casual either because of real life commitments, or because they just don’t want to sink that sort of time into a GAME anymore. It has very little to do with game “skills” as you imply by your post.

And yea, thank goodness, this game caters more to the casual crowd…..those that just want to have fun rather than sinking the majority of their current life into killing/manipulating pixels.

I always get a good chuckle about these sorts of casual/pro/hardcore sort of posts……like being a hardcore and/or ‘pro’ means a higher status in the game chain of life or like one does or does not have have the mad skillz to be a ‘pro’…….lol…….lol.

Yea, there are some players out there that have better reaction time, higher end programmable keyboards and game mice, and a better understanding of different character builds. And yea, there are a very few players out there that actually do make money off just playing games.

But, for the most part, hardcore or ‘pro’ just means that person has a lot more time that he/she is willing to commit to the game.

And one question…..how do you know that ascended stuff is the long term goal of “most players”? Got any hard data on that? Or is that “most” just mean the group that you run with in game?

http://www.gw2crafts.net/ this site will help you save both time and money when crafting.

Until you hit level 400. At that point they claim you’re done when you’ve only just begun.

There is a 400-500 guide on that site, as well. And yea, it gets really expensive really quickly. Or time consuming, if you farm everything.

Look, I even made this picture to help understand what the whole thing is about, I spent like hours in paint with it:

Omg that graph. Ohgod the grind. Completed my 94+ prayer goal then quit but holy dizzle I think I might have gone completely insane while getting it lol

I feel a little ashamed to admit this, but I actually wish we had more crafting skills to grind through that weren’t spent at designated crafting stations. I hated crafts like fishing in RS for example, but now I kind of miss the simple breaks from all the combat and action in a game. In retrospect, the secondary content made the main content shine even brighter, and I haven’t gotten that same vibe from GW2 crafting/gathering sadly.

One of the things I remember about playing Dark Ages of Camelot, is going to very specific areas for specific types of crafting,(or to your house or guild house that was equipped with the right kind of crafting station and associated merchants) then sitting around, either with friends that you could gab with, or with a few good movies(and hope you had a tv in your computer room) to watch while you spent countless hours/days/weeks getting your crafter up in level, while NOT getting any regular xp points for doing it. Mindless time spent building meaningless stuff that you couldn’t sell for much of anything……just pouring money and time into it all. And that was just for one profession. Some items that you crafted as you got higher up actually required a button press and then waiting for several minutes while the bar slowly filled until that ONE item was completed.

And let’s not forget about crafting in an alchemy based sort of trade, and the fact that some of the things you crafted, when you wanted to speed things up a tad….actually had a chance of blowing up in your face, destroying the materials and sometimes killing your character…….WHAT FUN!!!!!!

I never considered any of the above a ‘nice break’ from the regular parts of the game, nor that it made the rest of the game ‘shine’ more…….bleh……crafting in those older mmorpgs was sheer hell, plain and simple. But it was a required hell to a lot of us that wanted to help our guildies have better items/weaps/armor for a ton cheaper than what you could get from a non-guild crafter.

And back then, we all just considered that part of the “challenge” of becoming a skilled crafter……lol……wow, how mmorpgs have changed, thank goodness.

To the OP……don’t feel like people are offended here by your discussion of the ‘grind’ in GW2. It is just that lots of people here have experienced the real, horrid, make-this-game-a-job-type-time-committment-to-get-anywhere grind of previous mmorpgs. Compared to earlier mmorpgs, GW2 is a godsend…..(some hardcore/purists state that GW2 is too easy, due to this)

If you want to get a taste of what an older mmorpg was like, and how difficult and time consuming it is to get anywhere in the game, go try something like DaoC, Everquest, Lotro, or Eve Online, or ANY Korean title. After 2-3 weeks of the crazy grind in those games, you’ll be ready to throw yourself out a window.

It’s is just that it is all relative, especially to lots of the experienced mmorpg players here. It is great to see a true noob to mmorpgs, but know that some of the things you’re gritching about seem very silly to a lot of us old timers.

Welcome to the game, and enjoy!

Already had enough of Mark Jacobs while playing many years of Dark Ages of Camelot, No thanks. I have absolutely zero interest in playing his new game.

(and yes, I do realize that MJ bailed DaoC/Warhammer after getting lots of money from EA…..I was still playing DaoC and Warhammer during that transitional mess…..but I wasn’t crazy about some of MJ’s ideas when he was running the game)

Although sounds like his new game might be great for serious hardcore players…..if it ever comes out…..

Maybe he could do better independently, and hopefully not be tragically eaten by the EA alumni curse. The curse where a once talented/gifted developer that goes independent has their creative soul stripped out by their former employer EA. I am looking at you Richard Garriott and Peter Molyneux.

By the way I voted for none. Don’t even get me started on Square Enix. The same company who were cracking down on youtube/twich videos earlier this year, until the press got a hold of it. To which they relinquished their stance on the issue, but are still crossed with certain video game critics like Jim Sterling.

As for Arena Net they have a long way to go until they can really impress me again like they did when Nightfall came out. It might have to do with some of the original Arena Net staff leaving the company some time ago. That includes two out of it’s three original founders. Both Jeff Strain and Patrick Wyatt now work at Undead Labs. Furthermore the former design director at Arena Net James Phinney (that position was taken over by Chris “CDI” Whiteside) is also working at Undead Labs. Or it could be something else. Either way it does not help that their interpersonal communication skills with us have been severely lacking (or been selective to those who only “praise them”).

I would agree with most of what you said, except that Jacobs made a couple of horrendous decisions with the direction of DaoC before EA ever even had any interest in it. The game never really recovered from those decisions, and EA was just the final nail in the coffin, as DaoC was put on the shelf to collect dust after Warhammer and EA started completely mucking everything up.

Leaving DaoC, Warhammer, and the cancer that is EA was probably Jacobs’ best decision…..he could see the writing on the wall, and took the money and ran. I hope his next game does well, but I won’t be playing it, as he has made it clear that he is more interested in developing a game that is geared towards the hardcore RvR niche. I will be interested in seeing what sort of new ideas, if any, that he might have for RvR/WvW……maybe some other more casually inclined games will copy bits of his model if it is groundbreaking enough.

EVE does this right, EVE does that right.

Then why don’t you play EVE?

Because EVE sucks.

Eve sucks only because it takes forever to get anywhere in the game. If you’re wanting a hardcore challenge, try Eve Online. Lots of people love it just for its difficulty, and how different it is from other standard formula mmorpgs. Some people, like yourself, hate it.

And fwiw, I don’t play Eve anymore because I enjoy the more casual style mmoprgs, like GW2. I used to be much more hardcore when I first started mmorpgs well over a decade ago, but nowadays, I would much rather just enjoy a game, and not even come close to feeling like it can be a ‘job’ at times. I have real life for that.

Plus, after buying GW2, I don’t have to spend anymore money, if I don’t want to. The no sub fee is very appealing, imo.

As to the OP’s comments……I would go for better rewards, and maybe some larger and/or new maps……but merging won’t change balance problems. I have played many mmorpgs that have had some form of wvw, and there is no way to solve balance problems, as players move around depending on what servers are doing better. Imbalance is just a natural problem that comes with wvw, imo.

Can't Decide On A Profession

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If you’re a spellcaster at heart, go with either an elementalist or a mesmer. My wife is the same, coming from other mmorpgs, she has almost always played a wizzy or a healer.(no true healers in this game, so….) She plays her alts a lot, but the first character she started was an ele, as that was most true to what she usually plays…..and she has always loved that character.

If you want to play a true nuking squishy, go wizzy…..if you want something sort of wizard-like with a bit more survivability and bit more versatility……go mesmer.

And experiment with the specs on each until you find something that suits your playstyle the best. Best of luck!

GW2 endgame is grind...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

Not all MMOs are grinding…

  • Ultima Online before AOS
  • EVE Online
  • Archeage
  • A Tale in the Desert
  • Wurm Online
  • Second Life

And any other sandbox game. Because sandbox games either will pit you against other players, so the endgame is to kill other players and conquer their open-world territory, or it is to do social engineering and become well-known and well-liked amongst other players, or it is to express yourself by creating the most awesome new constructions and content.

I would love to have sandbox features in Guild Wars 2. I kinda expected it to have that, and was very disappointed to find another grindy themepark game. I’ve been having a lot more fun with Archeage these past few months, but unfortunately that game has many bugs. For me the perfect game would have the combat system of Guild Wars 2, the class and equipment system of Guild Wars 1, the player housing and open world of Archeage and the territorial PVP and player-driven economy of EVE Online.

I just about spit my coffee all over my monitor when you said that Eve Online is not grindy……lmao!!!!! What the heck is your definition of “grind”??? Must be completely different from most everyone else’s definition of grind…..lol……lol. In any case, good humorous post……lol.

Time to merge populations

in WvW

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

I don’t think merging wvw servers would be a good idea. It would end up being a major cluster-f***, imo. And rather than offering free transfers, as Dayra suggested above…..maybe just reduce the price of transfers for a short time.

I transferred just recently from Kaineng to Tarnished Coast, and wvw is now absolutely wonderful! Have had to deal with one long que on reset night, other than that, I just love T1 wvw!!!

Much, much better than spending 30 minutes in wvw just looking for other people. That was getting really tiresome.

I am happy you enjoy T1. Its been an awesome 2+ years for many fo us. Also for those considering transfers, also consider T2. Right now we have BG,TC,JQ,YB,FA,SOS,DB. It would be nice if 2 more servers could be added to the list so that we can convince Gold to be kitten and T3.

I was surprised at the stark difference between a T1 wvw server and Kaineng, a bottom rung wvw server. I expected there to be a difference, but I was shocked at how completely different and better wvw is on a T1 server. Sure am glad I made the change!

And despite what some have said about T1 attitudes, I have found the people there to be very nice, so far.

Siege Disablers Ruined the Game

in WvW

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

No, it is beside the point unless you can convince anyone that the siege disabler is as good for the weaker server as it is for the strongest. Good luck with that.

As useful as it was for you, the same, and more, is true for the strongest force. This was a bad implementation. If this makes it harder for the strongest player to take your precious T3 structure, imagine what it does to weaker server.

Siege disablers has only one purpose: delay. If you are alone in your T3 tower on a server were you are 5 playing, you are only prolonging your agony. If you are alone in the same tower but you know you have tons of buddies away that only need time to come back, taking that T3 might be impossible even when there is only 1 guy inside. And placing one guy in every structure is something the bigger server can do but not the little one.

How low are we talking ? I mean I’m from higher bronze, not even silver.
And 5 players can hold off a zerg dumb enough to not think about siege disablers when they put 4 superior rams.

I understand the complaints from havoc groups who are trying to take objectives while everyone else is busy.

But if the weaker server main “zerg” is 10 players (assuming best case scenario, that’s 200 supplies, so 4 superior rams), siege disablers or not they would most likely get killed by the time they get to the lord if the stronger server is that strong to put scouts in every tower (and because it’s the strongest server, of course everything is going to be fortified).

Has the populations of lowest bronze US diminish that much ? Is there such a huge population divide in the same tier (not talking about number 7 facing 11 and 13). Or are we only talking about night cap time ?

And really, speaking from spending excessively a lot of time in WvW for the past month, I’m quite shocked about how little siege disablers are being used.
I’m abusing the kitten out of it (and sometimes my opponents are really smart), but it’s not as widespread on my server or my opponents.

So is this huge complaint about siege disablers just something some players are extremely vocal about ? Or am I playing in the only tier right now where this isn’t a rampaging problem ?

I’m on a T1 wvw server, and it doesn’t seem to be over used much there. And when it is used, the group usually just changes their tactics and takes down the walls from range.

I have a feeling that this is just a small minority screaming really loudly about it, because either they won’t adapt and change their tactics, or they’re just against any sort of change that might affect their ability to bring a gate down in less than a minute with multiple rams. (And that is considered fair?? Seriously?…. )

That being said, I wouldn’t see a problem with slightly reducing the timers, maybe adding a cooldown, and adding los on disablers…..as that would help the lower pop wvw servers.

I have to agree with this. T1 wvw is working just fine. But the fact that I just came from a bottom rung wvw server for the last couple years……yea, those are definitely broken, due to lack of population. T1 is fairly fun for me right now. I think the fights are good. The three servers seem pretty balanced against one another even with all the recent transfers. There is a chance of winning or losing in most of the clashes, so it is staying fresh.

I have to agree with this. I just transferred a bit ago to TC from Kaineng, and TC wvw has been a heck of a lot of fun. I am really enjoying it so far.

Epic battle around smc against BG last night that seemed to go on and on and on and on…..heck of a ton of fun!!!

(I realize it probably wasn’t that epic for TC regulars…..but coming from the ghost town that is Kaineng wvw……it was epic for me)

What kind of game is GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Teon.5168

DaoC and Eve Online are far more grindy games than GW2 could ever hope to be. (Eve grind is in a class all its own) And this game is only grindy if you make it that way, imo. (Eve, DaoC, Everquest, and other older mmorpgs required the grind if you wanted to get anywhere in the game)
I would agree with one of the posters above, who said that GW2 is not geared towards hard core players. It may not be super casual, but it is definitely not thinking about the hard core mmorpg player most of the time. Which is good, imo.

I am a few clicks above 50 in age…….probably one of the reasons why I like the game so much.

I have not been experiencing any of these problems. Is this a problem with the Euro servers? Is it possible it might have something to do with weather and/or solar activity?

Just guessing……

WvW, PvE….all has been fine. Got into this huge fight on WvW last night and there was no lag whatsoever…..smooth as silk.

I am on the west coast USA….maybe that has something to do with my not running into these sorts of problems. (I am also on a high speed fiber optics connection)

whats the most useless Siege Weapon

in WvW

whats the most useless Siege Weapon in the game?

rams are now that siege disabler is in the game.

mesmer feedback, engi fort.turr. and guardian WofR says nope.
If done right, you actually got rewarded with a new mechanic to bate the waste of 10 supps per try out of the defenders.
People just need to adjust properly to the new situation.

Also, not sure about the oil.
It may be suicidal to man it, but usually commanders must clear it first before considering dropping rams, so it definitively buys you time, just by its existence.

I guess the most useless siege is normal AC’s
The guy using it maybe can tag some people, but even having 3 going does not really pressure a zerg, they take ages to take other siege out and are generally just a waste of 30 supplies.

dude. you can use disabler through gate…as in: my rams are on one side, and you are on the other completely out of sight, and can disable my rams…how on earth is anyone supposed to “adjust” to that? Develop telepathy?

Tried it in practice already, or do you just like to complain about everything instantly?
Tell your guardians to throw their WofR directly onto the gate and you’ll see how good they work.
The wall’s field is actually thick enough to cover the hitbox of the gate from the other side, so siege-disablers will get reflected from the other side as well, if you time your walls right.
Ofc you will get problems when the gate in question does not have a gap above to look trough, but that also improves the capability of small servers to hold their keep with reasonable chances.
Any attack on a keep should be a risk for the attacker anyways, so here you go: nice balance for the attacker (which just could chain-spam WofR (if he brings enough skilled people to organize the rota)) and for the defender in keeps (can’t be seen, therefore not be predicted).

You’re kitten right I’m complaining about this OP trap. If I don’t people like you will spout bullkitten like the above quote to defend it, and of course I’ve tried using reflects to counter the trap, it worked great until someone realized they can just spam the trap through a gate. The trap has been in the game for two months now, of course I’ve tried reflecting it. I don’t know whats more surprising, that you are defending a trap that might as well have removed rams from the game or that you think that is a serious counter. Reflects 100% of the time? Really? Wow man. Just wow.

Why not just use siege from range to bust down the walls if you’re having such a hard time against disablers? That only makes sense to me. Make it more difficult for the siege disablers to be used.

If I was someone using a siege disabler in defense, and the same squad just kept trying to ram the doors while I used the siege disablers over and over again, I would just start laughing at that squad’s inability and/or refusal to change their tactics.

/shrug……jmo

Missing the entire point.

Throwing it from behind a gate, where the enemy has no sight, and cannot react to it. In a game based on reactive play….. 0 risk, 100% reward. The mechanic of disabling siege is alright, the way its implemented currently is about as good as throwing a world class boxer in the ring with a mentally challenged and physically handicapped person expecting the person with shortcomings to win. Yes, its so bad it needed a metaphor that graphic.

I realize it is unfair. (although you can also use a disabler when you’re defending a keep) But until it is nerfed(which I believe it will be, as it is still pretty new and it always takes Anet some time to nerf something that is just too over the top)……but until then, what is the big deal about just changing tactics? I have already started to see a lot more catapults being used to bust into keeps than I used to, and I imagine that is because of the disablers.

Again missing the point, why should any single piece of siege be made utterly obsolete. The trap is broken, which you acknowledge, and yet for some asinine reason you’re trying to defend its legitimacy. There’s a time and a place for devils advocate, this isn’t one of them.

Please show me where I defended it’s ‘legitimacy’? Did you not bother to read my entire post? Again read what I said……

Here, I will make it more blatant. All your complaining and whining about it won’t change the fact that it now exists in game, no matter how over the top it is.
Until it is nerfed, change your tactics and adapt to find new ways to beat it.

smh

I really want to play this game again but it needs an expansion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Teon.5168

Doing a quick bit of maths, comparing the price of an expansion to the price of buying Living story episodes – if you added up all the episodes of one and two( yes I know you cant buy season 1 but this gives an idea of output over 2 years) excluding all the festivals it comes to about 23 episodes.

Episodes cost £2.13 each so £48.99 for all the content released over 2 years which is about the time frame for an expansion release o Wow’s expansion is currently shipping for £27.99 for most likely a darn sight more content than the LS has given…

I know which I would prefer..

But then again, if you log in for all of 30 seconds max around the time a new chapter in the LS is released, you pay nothing at all…..which makes your entire argument a moot point.

Well – you arnt even understanding my basic argument then – im making a financial comparison as best I can between the two and decising which I think is best value for money and which I prefer…

what about people like me who work in places they have no Internet for long periods? or people who God forbid only buy the game at a later point? or people who want to play LS on characters created AFTER the particular LS episode? I could go on…

Yea, because there is such a huge percentage of the player base that experiences the types of problems that you’re describing. Why would one even bother to play an mmorpg if they are without internet access for long periods of time? (although you can do that with GW2 since there is no monthly subscription fee) And please list all these supposed characters that have been created after new LS releases?

Again, I would bet that your ‘argument’ is a moot point to the majority of mmorpg players. Most are able to login for a few seconds around the time of a new LS release, therefore completely avoiding the cost you speak of.

It might be a significant financial point for you, but that is not the game’s problem.

An expansion does so much for mmos. Like for WoW, I was pretty bored with it for a very long while now. Mostly from the last expansion. Here we have WoD release and I am seriously in love all over again. That is also to do with the expansion being one of, if not, the best expansion they have ever released.

It’s brought WoW subscribers already up to over 10 million. We’re talking about over 3 million subscribers returned to the game because of a very well done expansion. Imagine the sales christmas will bring in. 3 million subscriber increase on the same day the expansion released(november 13). China wasn’t even released until the 18th, so the numbers should go much higher than that.

I’ll keep checking GW2 forums out until I either get bored of WoW or until GW2 steps up their game and produces enough content to last more than a couple hours a month.

Not advertising. It’s already been established that gw2 players don’t really want what WoW offers. I’m just saying an expansion release does wonders for a game. I fully think anet would benefit from doing the same.

If you’re expecting something decent being added to the game, watch this for a very sobering revelation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umpR6LhBhW4

I’ll give you a hint, The Living Story is all this game is apparently going to be getting in the future. Oh, and Achievements are considered end game now apparently too. That’s what arenanet meant when they said “the whole game is end game”.

Fine by me. I like GW2 just fine the way it is. And I like the way LS chapters are released. One of the reasons I enjoy GW2 so much is it is not like the other mmorpg clones out there. I imagine I will be sticking around for awhile.

And go ahead and call me a fanboy. The term makes me chuckle anymore…..lol.

The funiest part of the oil is to use the dome if you have oil mastery and watch the idiots (mostly p3wp3w rangers) kill themselves.

I have seen that happen a few times……the oil just becomes a death zone for the operators. I am a ranger myself, and I never get anywhere close to operating the oil….lol

Megaserver the WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Teon.5168

Teon.5168

I feel your pain, OP. While I don’t agree that a megaserver WVW is the solution(EotM is that)…..I used to wvw on Kaineng, and experienced the same troubles as you. I didn’t mind the constant beat downs in WvW that comes with being on a small server…..but what did finally get to me was porting in and not being able to find anyone on the map. That was happening just too much for me.

So I finally bit the bullet and transferred to a much larger server. I can’t begin to tell you the huge difference. Almost constant action….whether it be zergs, havoc groups, pugs, etc…..people in wvw almost all the time…..has changed wvw completely for me. So pleased I transferred…it was well worth it. Nice thing about the megaserver is that I can still stick with my kaineng guild for pve, while repping the new guild I joined while doing WvW.

I would highly recommend transferring to a larger server. It made all the difference in the world to me. And yea, I know it costs a lot of gems……which sucks…..but in the end I felt it was worth it.

And the comments I read that say that even the T1 servers can be ghost towns at times…..I imagine that is all relative. I might be wrong, but I would be willing to bet that the ‘ghost town’ periods on the T1 servers are like the busy times in WvW on the small servers like Kaineng.

And fwiw, I spent a lot of time in Kaineng wvw and it was very difficult abandoning my comrades there. On Kaineng, no matter your experience level, every person in WvW matters, due to its small server size. My guild was very understanding, especially since one of our leaders and another one had already transferred to a larger server for WvW. It is horribly sad to see wvw in Kaineng dying……but it was time for me to transfer. My sincere apologies to my Kaineng wvw buddies.
