Offhand - Sword Or Pistol?

in Mesmer

TwiceDead.1963

Can’t make up my mind on this, as I love both, so chime in and give your opinion! I’d appreciate it.

On the one hand, an off-hand sword gives you a strong counter-attack+clone, and you have Fencer’s Finesse, which gives you stacking ferocity and a cooldown reduction… Pretty good.

On the other hand (well same hand, really), you have an off-hand pistol where you get Magic Bullet, a CC move that can hit up to 4 targets with different debilitations. It’s phantasms engage from a range, making them better at staying alive compared to the phantasmal swordman. You also get a trait with the pistol, but unless you’re running a condition build for the bleeds, it is otherwise completely reliant on interrupts to be worth anything, and the cast-time on the off-hand pistols can make interrupting targets a bit tricky. Pistol is also susceptible to reflects.

I like both, but Fencers Finesse often drags me in the swords direction, it just seems more reliable and safer than Duelist’s Discipline.

Which do you prefer?

To my knowledge, every HP is solo-able in HoT with enough effort and knowledge of the boss you fight, I have managed to solo all of em at least ONCE by throwing myself at the wall, until I beat it by a margin and lucked out… Except for this one, there’s no way!

Was killed solo by me after lots of attempts. ~40 minutes

Hard, but not impossible.

Chill, it’s an MMO, you can’t solo everything. It’s their rules. Not yours. Or do you decide in real life to decide you don’t want to breathe? Life is harsh and you have to bend to rules…

I bend the rules to suit my needs, not the other way around. Only the weak succumb!

Nerfing it is out of question considering how much kitten Thieves have to put up with from the other classes. It’s one of the few reliable damage dealing attacks we have against the other classes, and considering how most of our stealth is mostly negated by all manner of passive defenses, stealth which was supposed to be our main mechanic, I have no problem with keeping PI the way it is now.

I don’t think it needs AoE though, enough of that. It’s fine the way it is.

Get a group and all will be good. Also, if you kite it outside of its little cove you can jump on top of the ledges around you to get more room to fight

Getting a group is what I have been doing, how else would I beat it? I am clearly stating that I can’t solo it, but all of that is irrelevant as not being able to beat it is not the point!

I WANT TO SOLO IT! I want to shove it’s ugly head into the ground and rip it’s legs off while force-feeding them back into whatever hole I can carve into it, as I for sure can’t find a mouth!

But that’s not happening. My pride is forever tarnished by the fact that I haven’t managed to solo this Mushroom in a fair fight! It’s like whenever I look at it now, it taunts me! It’s like it’s saying “Oh, you’re back for another kitten -whooping are you? YAWN, Well come on over and reveive your spanking from mushroom dearest!” and it kittenes me off to no end! ONE DAY I’LL GET MY REVENGE, YOU!

… But I didn’t really consider trying to get ontop of the ledges, especially the one on the right side does seem to be roomy enough to carry a suspended battle, as the ledge of the left is either a wall or a forest of mushrooms, if I can get the queen up there that is.

Well… The wise choice would be to tone down EVERYONE ELSE. Literally, nerf all the other classes that needs it down to our level, and do away with most of the passive defenses that plague the game that makes most of our additional playstyles useless, then buff acrobatics and nerf DrD.

But since that would take a massive amount of work and ANET only knows how to provide powercreep, buff thief somehow.

Suggestion: How to make Spears work

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TwiceDead.1963

TwiceDead.1963

As much as I want Spear to be a thing, it seems unlikely that they’ll introduce new weapon sets before they’ve finished porting current sets.

I get that technically Spear isn’t a new set, but at the same time it kind of is.

I want to feel like Zhao Yun in the middle of the battle of red cliff, i don’t want them to reskin staves or repurpose greatswords. if they do make spears terrestrial, it should have it’s own place.

I realized this fantasy by rolling Thief, going Daredevil, grabbing the Lightward Battlestaff skin, and going to town.

It’s the closest we get… And by god is it beautiful.

On topic:
I’d love to see spears, but they’d have to create probably 10 to 15 new animations for the weapon for 5 different races, unless Sylvari and Norns share human ones, in that case it’s still 3 races, which makes it about 30 to 45 new animations at best, and 50 to 75 at worst. My math is way off, but you get the idea…

They won’t have to create animations for every class, as they have a habit of re-using animations all over the place across classes with different effects surrounding them every time. They could even lessen the work by re-purposing some Revenant and Daredevil staff animations.

I just don’t see them putting in the effort to do that…

[Balance] Top Three Priorities

in Thief

Posted by: TwiceDead.1963

TwiceDead.1963

1. Swap the positions of Venemous Aura and Revealed Training.

2. Fix the “No Valid Path to Target” problem.

3. Speed up some of the cast animations (CnD for example) and the projectile speed on all shortbow skills (excepting #4 possibly)

3. Is quite a problem to me.
EDIT:
Before Thief became all about Decaps and +1’s according to the devs! Cough!,

Theif was all about rapid burst engagements, you go in, do some damage and get out.

Sadly, many of the skills don’t make this easy at all, as either the skills themselves have a ridiculously long build-up, or their recovery animation is equally long, making chaining abilities clunky and unresponsive.

Some weapon sets are more prone to this than others, but Shortbows and Swords are definitely part of the culprits.

You can work around it though, wait my bad… You have to.

Why do you need that hp anyway? If u don’t wanna do it then skip it there are tons of easier hps to do.. even some that are easily soloable once u get some practice

If you’re going for map completion on all those maguuma maps for legendary crafting or something, then yeah I agree it’s a problem but honestly just join a hp train cos that’s how I got mine

I agree, they are all easily soloable… Most of em’ anyway, some are a bit tricky, but not unbeatable.

THIS ONE THOUGH!? kittening impossible! I banish beasts, I can smite dragons! But shrooms? kittenING INVINCIBLE! Mordremoth and Zhaitan’s got NOTHING on this thing!

As for why I do it?
I did mention that I have a tendency to throw myself at a wall until either it or I break, I guess that makes me a masochist. I’m stubborn and I want to win alright?! I accept the challenge as long as the challenge is fair! I actually enjoy soloing kitten merely for the challenge itself!

I don’t actually grind for gear in this game. I do the events I enjoy and have some fun with the gameplay, I’ll gain a profit merely by playing anyway, not quickly mind you, but over time it accumulates. Shortly put, I do it because I enjoy the challenge and so that I can pat myself on the shoulder for soloing kitten other people have troubles with, and that also makes me more familiar with the fights so that I can help other people in the future.

That one Mushroom HP that forces everyone to fight in a narrow chokepoint with nowhere to dodge , run or hide, while it spits AoE of death on you and everyone inside the chokepoint?

GW2 has NEVER been a game about face-tanking damage, it’s always been about positioning, dodging and timely use of utility abilities. If you try facetanking, it’s downright lethal no matter what you run.

But when you try this HP, you have no choice but to facetank! You cannot possibly avoid the damage thrown at you unless you are fortunate enough to have enough meatshields tank the damage for you! You are funneled into a narrow hallway with the only way to dodge being backwards, and you can only go so far.

… Who was the mastermind behind this HP? Because it is by far, the WORST HP in the game, and not because the monster itself is hard, but because of the positioning of it. It’s ridiculous.

No, the Vampire HP in Verdant Brink is not worse, you can solo it with some positioning and knowledge of it’s attacks. I have done it. This one though? There’s no way you can keep track of the AoE fields, the tiny grenade mushrooms camouflaged into the ground effects, and the mushroom queens own attacks.

To my knowledge, every HP is solo-able in HoT with enough effort and knowledge of the boss you fight, I have managed to solo all of em at least ONCE by throwing myself at the wall, until I beat it by a margin and lucked out… Except for this one, there’s no way!

Has anyone tried this out? How is the healing scaling on the medkit? Combined with the alchemy trait tree and Elixir gun? What kind of meaningful support could engineers provide this way? Would it be viable when compared to the support you can get from for instance an Elementalist? I know Engineers won’t even get close to the levels of support a Druid can provide, but hey… Fun thought.

I am considering starting a support build just for fun and see how it works, but I figured I’d ask here if anybody had already given it a go.

Maybe they can provide some serious boon application if you combine it with Leystone gear…

Allow us to craft in bulk?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TwiceDead.1963

TwiceDead.1963

You are right, it’s a minor thing… Buuuut…

I don’t agree on their balance on this matter. Or any of their balance for that matter, but that’s an endless discussion for the Class forums.

I would have to do a needless amount of pre-planning if all I wanted to do was craft 400 bolts of silk(the example in this discussion) for your multi-task… “Solution” to be feasible, when it would be much simpler to allow me to craft simple materials in bulk.

It’s also completely ridiculous to expect me to keep a messy inventory just so that I can sort it on the off-chance that I am going to be crafting massive amounts of basic materials, when it’s much easier to simply clean it regularly and not have to worry about it at all.

There’s no way to speed up crafting in the game either, so there’s no paying a premium to get it quick, as no such service is offered by ANET.

400 bolts of silk would not become any less valuable if it took 1 minute less to craft them, so the economy wouldn’t suffer.

There should be no reason some items are quicker to craft than others. First time crafts, sure, for flair, ofcourse, but after that, allow me to craft items in bulk, and stop wasting my time within the game I am already trying to waste my efficiently time with, WITHOUT having to waste a lot of time pre-planning just because I want to craft huge amounts of basic stuff.

And no, I am not talking about crafting equipment in bulk, or ascended daily items in bulk, the time-gate is there for a reason, I simply want to not have to waste time watching a yellow bar go from left to right 400 times for Mithril, Elderwood, Ancient Wood, Orichalcum, Silk, Gossamer, you kittening name it, before I can finally play again.

It’s incredibly time-wasting, and it’s such a simple QoL change, that I see no good reason not to have it other than “It’s an MMO and MMO’s have to waste your time”. It’s a horrible trend that needs to die… At least for the crafting of simple materials. I get that MMO’s need to pad out their content to sustain interest.

Like martin, I am a little confused at this as well…

Thieves really only bring two things to the game. Damage and Stealth. Anything else they can do utility-wise is done through Stealth, aside from Venomshare I mean… So if you nerf Stealth you’ll nerf overall thief utility.

Thief is only masters of Stealth by a small margin to begin with, as other classes are catching up on that, so if you lower the amount of stealth we can provide we’ll be even less desirable for group play.

I would rather see a buff to other areas before I saw a nerf to Stealth, honestly.

Stealth is a bit overabundant though, I would rather see shorter durations of Stealth and then Revealed done away with.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: TwiceDead.1963

TwiceDead.1963

I’ll just start by saying that I don’t understand aggro mechanics, and if they are clear as day, please enlighten me.

So…

I’ve been playing the game on and off for about 4 years now, and I still don’t have a grasp on aggro mechanics. I tried to look it up on the wiki, and even the wiki couldn’t say for certain how mobs prioritize targets, and the only class that seems to have a taunt is revenant.

I get why they did it, they wanted to do away with the usual triangle of healer, DPS and tanks and let everybody play in whatever way they wanted…

But that just makes it harder for people who actually want to tank and take mob attention away from allies to do that. You could’ve geared up with a toughness and healing focus specifically for that purpose, but what good does it do when mobs just targets whoever but you? And if DPS are supposed to limit the amount of damage they do, then that just defeats the purpose of a DPS…

While it kind of opens up playstyles, it also limits them… In my limited opinion.

I wish they could at least explain how aggro mechanics work within the game itself.

Saboteur : Elite Spec Idea

in Thief

Posted by: TwiceDead.1963

TwiceDead.1963

I like the concept, personally. I could see it be hard to work with in a PvP setting though, ground target abilities that rely on travel-time and a some kind of delayed detonation really only serve as area denial tools. I am not saying that is not valuable, as it is, I just see it hard to work with as it seems that all the opponent would have to do is side-step it to counter it, limiting it’s usefulness to chokepoints, which would make it incredibly niche.

Sounds great for a PvE setting though, if the barrels contain fuel, or toxic waste, or anything of the sort to create AoE condition pools of death. Maybe even boon-barrels? Maybe thieves could finally get some teamplay going with boons and maybe become desirable for group content for more than just their damage and stealth, which other classes already have plenty of.

Ignore Orpheal, you don’t need to be super detailed when you’re just sharing ideas, as the best things are often created when a group of people are just bouncing ideas of eachother.

I am sure people have a free enough imagination to fill in the blanks on their own if they find an interest to engage in the discussion about it.

Stalker - Elite Specialization Concept

in Thief

TwiceDead.1963

Looks like powercreep central.

While I like the concept, some of your suggestions are just better variants of what we already have. Sudden Piercing is just a better variant of Shadow Shot. Dark Escape is just an outright better variant of Cloak’n Dagger. It seems like claw is just destined to completely replace off-hand dagger with this setup as Dancing Daggers seems … Mediocre, compared to an unblockable blind that grants you all the boons.

Now I know Daredevil is a culprit of the same thing, but the last thing we want is more of it. Elite specializations should offer new playstyles without obsoleting the core theif kits.

If you go thief for group play, you are basically taking the role of sand in an otherwise well oiled machine.

Most of your kits aside from Venomshare are inherently selfish and don’t benefit a group in a significant enough way except for providing stealth, and in a zerg that’s hardly going to be useful for anybody but other thieves, except for stealth revives.

That doesn’t mean that thief ain’t fun though. When you do pull off those amazing moves it’s super satisfying.

Just lonewolf it. Roam, have some fun.

current state of thiefs

in Thief

TwiceDead.1963

I am pretty new to sPvP, so I am sure the more experienced players can give you deeper insight on that front, but here are my two cents…

PvE:
We bring a lot of DPS.
We bring Stealth on Demand.
That’s… It, really. To my experience we’re pretty good at shattering break-bars too.

sPvP:
We run across the map, decap points and +1 opponents.

From what I hear…
In 1v1 fights, you really gotta know what you’re doing to be effective, you gotta play really hard as a thief to be half as effective as a lazy day on another class.

This I can’t confirm myself as I only really play thief in sPvP, and while I find it true that 1v1’s are difficult, as I rarely win out against classes like Scrappers, Dragonhunters and Warriors, but at the same time, I never DIE unless I make a crucial mistake or get overly eager to kill someone.

Thieves have an amazing amount of freedom, I find. We can choose exactly when to engage and disengage an encounter and we dive in and out of combat freely. Pinning us down is really hard, and as soon as things go sour we can high-tail it and be across half the map within a couple of seconds, much to our opponents dismay who desire nothing more than to crush our faces into the dirt.

We are fun, but we don’t have much of a presence in a match either. At the moment, we’re the best runners in the game… For better or worse.

I absolutely hated it. This is the third time they hid the exploration of a new map behind a mandatory mission all your characters have to do.

They did it with Drytop, with the expansion we payed money for and now again with this.

This particular mission is also kitten. The player character is a pathetic pushover that never makes a decision of his/her own. How about “No, I don’t want to test this kittenty arena. I have to fight a kittenING Dragon!”

Stuff like that ruins the notion that Primordus is a threat.

Another thing that ruins that is the fact that apparently the player character is so kittened that he/she thinks having ONE person doing the research on this dangerous dragon is totally enough.

The mission itself wasn’t fun either. The destroyer waves were too long and the “funny” easter egg was just annoying.

This mission spread a two minute dialogue into a 12 minute waste of time. And you have to repeat it on EVERY single of your characters you want in the new area.

Missions like that destroy the ridiculously small amount of immersion this game has to offer.

They also had the stupid as bread player character in the Guild Wars 1 Nightfalls expansion probably before that even. So no change in that area for nearly a decade now.

All of This ^.

Thief solo survival build

It’s super squishy, and not at all solo-friendly, and relies on interrupts and the evasion during pistol-whip, but since you can literally dodge out of the constant dodge you get from pistol whip, you can just dive in and out of an encounter.

Since you are super squishy, you are relying on positioning and evades.

My usual rotation:
Auto-attack → Pistol-Whip(interrupt) → Steal(interrupt) → Pistol-Whip → Dodge(Disengange) → Get an overview, pick a target and repeat.

Pulmonary impact usually leaves most mobs dead at this point, and if they aren’t, one or two auto-attacks usually finish veterans off. If they can’t be interrupted, oh well.

It’s not very survivable, but it’s super fun to play risky and keeps you on your toes since you have to be reactive with your playstyle and cannot afford to stay at all passive.

I don’t see it going away soon… Ecto’s are going to drop, but you aren’t really making any less money “yet”. Before when it was harder to get ecto’s you could sell 3 for 40 silver each and get 1.2 Gold before TP tax, but they were harder to get back then, or at least less numerous.

Now you spend about the same effort as you did before, but you get more Ecto’s, for it, however because they are easier to get, their value drops, and you now sell 5 ecto’s at 25 silver each to get 1.25 Gold before TP tax.

I don’t really think you’re going to earn any less, is my point, as you’re going to spend the same effort to get more Ecto’s, but the prices of Ecto’s is going to drop to balance that out.

Problem is you have to do Multiloot to earn as much as you did before, and that kind of becomes your only option to earn as much as you did before, rather than follow a boss train which visits some varied locales to earn your buck.

I am no expert on economy though, so I am probably way- WAY!- off base, this is just how I perceive things with very limited knowledge of the situation.

Oh yeah, Verdant Brink, Auric Basin, even Dragons Stand. I like all of those… HoT is great in that respect.

But Tangled Depths… I can only channel so much… Hate…

The hard part I think will be dealing with reflects, etc.

Just counter reflects with your own reflects. Since you’re running Trickster-ish, just go with Dagger-Storm.

Then when the enemy pops their reflects you can be all-like “HAHA! I am now reflecting what you were reflecting back to me, back at you! While throwing more kitten at you!”

Then you can both stand there with your reflects up and stare awkwardly at eachother until the opposition grows tired of your beyblading and slams you into the ground because they realize your petty reflect don’t do kitten against a solid smack to the face.

._.

In a game, gameplay trumps everything.

Besides, who says you have to follow some arbitrary rules made by some self-proclaimed thieves-guild you’ve never cared about anyway. I WILL DEVIATE FROM THIS NORM!

I’ll create a new guild! “No Honor Among Thieves!” Gather my brethren! Down with this honorable hogwash those weaklings among’st us, who try to impose this uncanny semblance of order upon your daily lives!

It’s every man for himself!

tl;dr
I refuse.

Spontaneous thought I got right now and it’s not well thought at all, just spontaneous.

What if thieves could steal from teammates?

It would have a slightly longer cooldown, but it would always guarantee a single item depending on what class they are, and maybe sometimes grant a boon as well? Because Thieves lack any kind of synergy with the other classes, maybe this could alleviate it a little bit?
Brief examples:

Steal from a downed player – Switch places with the downed player and stealth them simultaneously.

Guardian – Steal Aegis (Or just, get aegis, don’t actually steal your teammates Aegis!)

Warrior – Steal Might.

Engineer – Steal Big’Ol’Bombs or something I don’t know?? Grant a giant explosion on point that sends both players flying, because why not?

Mesmer – Steal Distortion at an instant-cast, or something.

Elementalist – I don’t know.

Ranger – Steal their pet.

So you get the general concept. Sounds good? Yeah! See? Nyeah!?

I think thief getting rifle would be sick. Stealthy sniper seems like it would be crazy fun in wvw. And don’t even get me started on the fashion wars with The Predator.

It would also be completely broken though…

You can’t give a class range, mobility and damage all at once, and since thieves are all about being slippery with their stealth and mobility oriented utility skills and traits, I don’t see them giving us range and damage at the same time.

Unless they somehow remove a lot of our mobility options, like rooting us in place whenever we want to fire.
