Can you please never use this filter ever again? It makes it extremely hard to see AoEs. I think we got the idea of it being something from the past after the first mission.

Makes the special textures on pact fleet and chaos weapons look really rad though

I don’t know where you find this “overall dissatisfaction of the playerbase” in relation to SW, everyone I hear (friends, guild, map chat) is happy about the area and its loot output.

the overall opinion of the playerbase is exactly my opinion. I’m lucky or awesome in that way.

Good news is, accordingly, the overall opinion of the playerbase is that SW is great, and if anything TOO rewarding. The playerbase would also prefer if the luminescent pieces were really time-consuming to get so every kitten doesn’t have a full set on day 2.

.. if my partner started putting up red flags like Faolain was before that fight, snip…

Did Faolain really do anything that outragious though?

Her obsession with Wynne was a pretty big red flag, in multiple ways.

She was concerned with the Sylvari’s ability to defend herself.

Wynne knew something that could tip that balance in the favour of all Sylvari. Or at least break them free from Ventari’s legacy which in Faolain’s eyes is the biggest part of the problem. Without knowing who Faolain really is or the whole nightmare court thing why would a genuine desire to find out what Wynne knows a big red flag? I dont think its a red flag at all really. Its natural a warrior desires to know all the best weapons s/he can get!

Even Caithe, Caithe questions her about it and thinks her obsession is over the top. That’s like the one red flag she did see.

Just relationship wise, it’s a very awkward feeling when your SO has an obsessive, staklerish lock on a third party.

I don’t know, I mean, Caithe was in a tent, and could only hear Faolaon’s screams, not actually see the conflict, who started it, and why; all she had to go off of (when she stepped out) was the view of Centuers fighting Faolaon and her followers to the death, and as they were actively in combat, no time to ask questions.

Ask yourself, if you heard screams from your lover -who you believe to good of virtue and intent- and rushed out from the tent to see her fighting for her life (for whoever started it, it IS clear that her life is now at risk) what would you do, who would you help, would you try to ask questions in the middle of a battle, try to pacify the combatants as they kill each other left and right, step back and watch, help the enemy put your lover down? No, you would step in and fight at her side.

So I think Caithe’s actions, from her perspective, are reasonable.

The problem is, you have to ignore every single thing that’s happened up to that point in that specific memory for it to be reasonable.

When you start you see Faolain has brought in a military force ‘for protection’. Soon after, you meet the centaurs and they’re very respectful and friendly. Then Faolain starts saying hateful things, then they’re less repsectful, then they argue some, then Faolain pretty much directly threatens Wynne with abduction by force, then Caithe goes into the tent. There’s no point in the entire time Faolain isn’t being extremely hostile and going through extremely provocative acts.

From Caithe’s perspective it might be possible, Caithe is like, super kittening stupid. But your Character should have a better idea.

Even better she could go into the fight, and then afterwards turn to Faolain and say “I love you, and I’ll fight to the death for you, but what the kitten is wrong with you that you just did all that?”

I still want to know how she goes from OP super young one to the world of suck in the original Personal Story we go through. At least she’s not like Logan “down for the count” bad, but still.

That one’s easy though, my memory tells me that in the earlier betas the Destiny’s Edge people would basically carry you through story dungeons. They were weakened for game balance reasons so players had at least some level of actual challenge, no matter how little.

That being said, the new kids are much more effective. Having Braham face tank the mordrem troll in the labyrinth is weirdly satisfying for me.

Edit: So gameplay trumped story is my point :p

Actually my reasoning for calling her Eeeeevul right from the start stems from how she never truly changes compared to how she’ll eventually be.

In this back story, well she’s a racist or at least has Sylvari supremacist-like feelings which isn’t too far from the former. Aside from that she’s still pretty much the end result, minus the kidnapping part.

Maybe, but I just don’t see it. If your point is that she didn’t go from angelic sweetness to darkest black, sure. But she starts out suspicious, not paranoid; a freethinker, not a terrorist; protective of Sylvari, not xenophobic.

If you only showed me part one, I could easily envision a character arc that ends with Faolain as a Byronic anti-hero, with Trahearne being the one who falls from grace as secondborn start questioning Ventari’s teachings and his authority, and he reacts by codifying the tablet into a set of rigid laws enforced by a brutal Inquisition.

We can easily see the traits (questioning orthodoxy, a suspicious attitude, self-confidence to the point of arrogance) that will combine with her experiences and the influence of others like Cadeyrn to corrupt her. But it doesn’t mean most people with those flaws will become a paranoid, racist terrorist.

Now, in part three, she’s clearly most of the way to the dark side. But by that point, it should be clear that the Nightmare Court exists in an embryonic form, and she has joined their team since part two. The arc of her fall is traced between parts 1/2 (the start, where she’s about as good as she ever was) and part 3 (where’s she nightmare court in all but name).

Again, it starts with her being angry about the idea of someone embracing peace and unity and that they’d dare suggest she live up to a standard.

Edit: Actually this isnt’ quite right, it starts with her being psychopathically suspicious and envious of her sister, Wynne. The darkness doesn’t start with the racism, the darkness starts with her diseased obsession with/jealousy of Wynne.

The beginning of the second act really gives it away though, “Why can’t she love us unconditioanlly?” both misunderstands unconditional love and misunderstands parenting.

She never doesn’t want to hate, not in chapter 1, not in chapter 2, certainly not when she’s exterminating all sentient life in that valley.

If anything she gets angry that she’s not allowed to be as hateful as she’d like as quickly as she’d like.

~~~
Like I (and a few others have said), it would have worked better if they did asura > Meeting > Centaurs. Then she’d have a recognizable character arc of See terrible things > Question harshly the things she’s being taught > Give in to anger and hate.
It would also make her focus on wynne make more sense, after the Asura thing she’d be angry and fightened at the world, and it would be perfectly sensible to be worried about what she heard and seek a form of control (that’s one of things you do when you’re frightened and vulnerable and angry).
Skill 1 is utterly broken good, especially single target.
Damage isn’t amazing, but most of the attacks have a small cleave, and the third attack (let me emphasize this) is a guaranteed stun that seems to work through defiance. It doesn’t require a back facing like someone else said, it just petrifies them.
This is most noticible on the golem if you screw up in the second room, but it also works perfectly on frapp or frupp or whatever his name is. If you get him in a place where he can’t jump away, you just autoattack him to death.
Also, #2 works like the old FGS 4. If you do it into a corner it hits multiple times for massive damage.
The moves are different, but they’re exceptionally strong compared to their equivalents (except for 3, 3 is kind of weak).
If she’s not remotely likeable, how can we believe that she’d be Caithe’s 1 true love?
It’s been approximately 2 years. Caithe and Faolain were the only ones that left the forest and ventured the world together. Faolain’s view could have changed over that time as she learned what the world was really like. By that point, they already shared a bond.
Even if Caithe knew that Faolain was turning, it’s not surprising that she wouldn’t give up on her after all they’ve been through. In the end, Caithe goes as far as the edge of the nightmare to be with her.
It’s unknown when exactly Faolain turned, but the seed of the Nightmare Court is shown to exist even back then. For all we know, this could have been their last memory together.
I’m not saying that it couldn’t have happened, but rather that they need to show us it happening, or else we wont’ really feel it. We never see a version of Faolain who isn’t soul-rendingly evil, and the believability and relatability of the characters suffer for it.
Keep in mind that Caithe was around 2 years old at the time. The current year is 1327, the firstborn emerged in 1302 and the secondborn were 2 years later, which was what the first memory showed.
With only 12 firstborn, she has had a very limited view.
Still Faolain is utterly loathsome and against everything they’ve been taught. She’s petty, spiteful, hateful, racist, violent, and subversive.
If she’s not remotely likeable, how can we believe that she’d be Caithe’s 1 true love?
This story bit has all the elements from the first half of S2 before the break, I’m guessing that they had already planned this one out and done it ahead of time, since it’s an important, long-planned story element.
I think part of it is that they just don’t make you believe that anyone could love Faolain, which messes with Caithe’s characterization.
Honestly, if they’d just swtiched up the order it would have worked better. Start with the rescue mission and a more reasonable but still very harsh Fao, then have the meeting while She’s still all “PAIN IS REALITY!”, then complete the deal with slaughtering the centaurs.
Fao being already hateful and evil from the beginning made Caithe just look weak.
Remove Autobalance and Teamswap from Hotjoin
Windsagio.1340
Like I was saying in one of the many other threads on this, there’s a fairly easy solution to the problem, it seems to me.
1) If you spec out or swap without autobalance once you’ve been on a team, 0 points for the round.
2) Autobalance 5-4’s if the 4 team is behind by say 50-100 points. Same rules as the current autobalance. All of a sudden, the 5-4 is on the other side, and late joins aren’t screwed over either because they’ll likely come into a very close or their team ahead match.
There are some potential exploits to 2), but including 1) deals with most of them.
Prevention is better than cure, and all that. Especially as the cure you support is “punish them more” and doesn’t actually help anyone but those who were already winning and already getting winner rewards.
How is that? My suggested cure is ‘make spectating out not an attractive option’.
So you force people to stay in their losing team, which has been outnumbered all game, and get minimal rewards despite having been there all match?
A player who joins the winning team a couple of minutes in (after they’ve gotten their small lead) gains better rewards than someone who joined a random team at the start and ended up on the losing one.
You’re stopping people from dealing with the problem (sucky outnumbered matches and minimal rewards for them) without actually fixing the problem (that people join the winning team over the losing one, and so make it outnumbered in favour of the team that was already winning).
Yes, you have to force the people to stay on the losing side, your suggestion doesn’t change that either. We have to disincentivize teamjumping, that’s essential to the whole deal.
The murder rule solves the ‘losing 4-5’ though, because fairly quickly people are going to get rewarded for joining the losing team. Even if you join the winner, why wouldn’t you follow volunteer rules and go to loser? In a 4-5 situation it’s all of a sudden 5-4 on the other teams side, and that’s a potentially HUGE swing in a map.
My advanced cure would be to expand the forced rebalance to include a ‘murder rule’ where you get the volunteer rewards if you (legally) flip to a side that’s behind by more than 100. There’s a lot of edge cases and gotchas with that though, so one needs to be careful.
The state of hotjoins is really miserable atm. If Anet truly wants to promote e-sports, they need to remove them at all (leaving only no progression custom arenas) and add unranked queue. With all the benefits of queues (no team jumping, leaving penalty, MMR, etc) but without that “pressure” that “new players” get from losing points on leaderboards.
Well the problem is more that players will gleefully suggest cheating on the forum :p
There’s a lot of advantages to browsable servers for players, mainly in that it’s easy to find games quickly. It would be better to fix spectate and swapping than to make play on full servers less available.
i would not call it “breaking the whole match” especially if the match is 5 vs 4 to start with. it would be re-balancing the match if the losing team ended up with more players after the re-balancing.
Yeah but who spec’s out to balance teams? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it.
~~~

To the guy who suggested blockign the spectate button, it would be better to just make you gain 0 points if you had to go into spectate once you’ve been on a team. There are legitimate reasons to go spec (phone call, answer the door, etc) so we want it possible, we just don’t want it to be a way to get more points.

The other thing is ‘although 1-10 sucks and is annoying don’t be Nektraal’. I actually call out people team jumping so everyone knows. It’s kind of obnoxious and starts some fights sometimes, but it also hopefully will discourage the behavior.

It’s a bit of ‘if Anet won’t police us, maybe we can police ourselves’.

I usually call out when I do it, and encourage everyone else to do it too.

Do you really think people ought to keep playing to the end of the match on a losing team, that is only losing because it’s outnumbered, with zero chance of pulling it back – or even of getting some fair skirmishes – since nobody else is going to join partway through for time-scaled loss rewards?

Do you really think that the people who skill-stack at the start of the match are playing fairly? Or those who camp in spectator mode until one team has a clear upper hand?

These are the folks who’re really playing unfairly, not the poor sods who entered the map and immediately joined the hilighted team that was 3v4… only to have someone immediately join the already winning lot who’s been camping spectate.

Picking a good team is different than abandoning your team in the middle of the fight when it’s losing… especially since trying to skill pick with people you don’t know can fail utterly. I also don’t blame people for joining the winning team when first coming into the match. Everyone does that, just about.

Jumping breaks things severely, it makes a losing side lose worse, and it’s breaking expectations. Changing the team in the middle of the game because you’re losing is one of those things nobody ever expects, all the way down to kindergarten.

Multiple thieves usually means the team is gonna lose. dont’ wait too long or you might get locked out!
I don’t want to burst your bubble but I have won matches with multiple thieves in it. Depends who is playing.XD

usually :p

It’s pattern recognition. I’ve noticed that teams with a lot of thieves tend to have trouble, compared to (say) teams with a lot of engineers. I wanted to include rangers there, but ranger combined fire is a mitigating factor when you get right down to it.

Trying to predict the winning team is always a gamble in hotjoin (the teams change a lot too, and it can be hard to tell who the winning factor was), but you can hedge your bets a little bit :p

You should never lose a game in hit join.

(1) hit play it now until you are on a winning team with more number than your opponent.

(2) if you ever have the chance, to autobalance, do it. This counts as a win and you get bonus glory.

(3) if your team has less players than the other team, hit spectate mode…. Wait for a player to autobalance, evening up the sides, and then transfer over to the winning team.

hotjoin cancer 101.

Had a fun experience last night, several times in a row, got autobalanced off of the winning team and we managed to turn it around after I switched.

Tips, mostly like ScaredyCat’s:

1) Remember always not to get caught up into combat in the middle of nowhere. This is a plauge in HJ games, just run away instead of wasting time. Avoid any big fight, unless it’s on a point.
2) Don’t just join automatically: The first time you’re in a server, look at the team comp: It can be as simple as just choosing after the first people join. If one team has an engi and one has a thief, go with the engi. The thing I avoid the most are multiple rangers and multiple thieves. Multiple rangers CAN be good, but it’s risky. Multiple thieves usually means the team is gonna lose. dont’ wait too long or you might get locked out!
3) At the end of the first game, look carefully at the scoreboard and use that info to try in with the best players from the last round. Score can be a little tricky for that, some classes (rangers) get inflated scores.

I’d avoid Single Q though. It’s just as likely to be unbalanced as hotjoin (which is worse, team hoppers or locked 4-5s?), but people are generally more chill and fun-loving.

To all you Rangers

in PvP

Posted by: Windsagio.1340

Windsagio.1340

If the ranger is smart and the bunker is bunking, the ranger should be killing the other 3 from 1500 range, since their whole thing is doing high-burst from afar. If he’s not… well, then that’s just the player not doing a good job.

Also, Dudis, you cannot assume the same skill level makes a fight equal. Skill is only half the battle, the other half being build. If one’s build is better than the others, it will raise the “battle level” of the better build beyond his skill level alone.

Considering one is running a zerker bow ranger the team with 2 already has 50% of it not running a meta build. No a ranger wont be able to kill 3 players from range. Maybe 1 , but not 3. They can reflect, send 1 player to kill the ranger, use line of sight to avoid it, etc… Even if it down 1 the other 2 can ress it. What do you think it’s easier: 1 ranger kill 3 or 3 kill 1 guy sitting in the point?

If you’re facing a pickup with multiple longbow rangers and you’re running coordinated, you’d better be winning 3-2’s.

A ranger coming in slightly late on people trying to 2-1 a bunker is bad news for the 2 though, the tactic totally works.

On this, I’m still kind of stuck on the fact that for other classes they improved underused skills, but for ranger they didn’t improve the underused weapons, but did that opposite thing.

I don’t wanna think they’d fold to the whining, but maybe they did.

Don’t forget when Shortbow was nerfed to make it ‘more different’ from the underused Longbow, and encourage people to use Longbow more often. A 25% nerf to range, on top of the ‘fix’ to the attack animations which were too fast, pretty much ensured the Shortbow became useless for anything but bleed-stacking builds.

Instead of buffing the Longbow to make it more desirable, the Shortbow was nerfed instead. And guess what? Longbow was still mostly useless (to most people) until it was finally improved, only, the Shortbow remained useless.

I know that sounds kind of a little condescending and there’s probably a worse word for it, but that’s exactly how I saw it when I read the patch notes.

I think this is essentially what I’m hoping ArenaNet are keeping in mind when looking at ‘overuse’ of longbows. If one option is substantially more popular than the others, it could mean that that option is more powerful than it should be, that it’s at about the right spot but the alternatives are weak, or somewhere in between.

Now, the ranger is balanced with the presence of the pet in mind, so we shouldn’t be expecting a ranger to get quite the same sort of numbers as the warrior – but it does need to be kept in mind that if the longbow is being “overused”, the problem may not be with the longbow.

Its amazing that you think that…But if that’s how you feel, maybe we should….

Nerf Scepter so other weapons become more desirable to Elementalists in PvP

Nerf Daggers so Pistol/Pistol becomes more desirable for Thieves.

Nerf Hammer so Warriors feel their Mace is more powerful

Nerf Staff and Hammer so Guardians use other weapons in WvW

Nerf all weapons so Engineers are encouraged to use Kits more often

Nerf Glamour, Clones, and Manipulations so Mesmers are encouraged to use Signets and Mantras.

Yeah. I like your logic! Nerf instead of buff!

Uhhhh, I read his post totally different than you and I fully agree with him.

In my understanding, he was also agreeing with you. Basically he meant to say that ANET’s comment “Ranger using longbow too much” should lead them to the conclusion that it means the other ranger weapons are broken/ineffective/problematic, instead of following ANET’s previous strategy of nerfing something to the point it is best to use a worst weapon than to continue using the one that got nerfed (e.g., how they nerfed shortbow to the point it is rarely a viable weapon).

EDIT: Oh, and I can’t say it enough…. Although I agree that Ranger balance needs to account for the fact we have a constant pet, ANET should only, ever, use that argument for balance changes after they fix the ranger class mechanic, or, at the very least, make it so our class mechanic is somewhat of our special bonus (like class mechanics are for other classes) rather than a handicap.

Pet is unfixable in pvp, that’s just something you’ve got to live with. They just can’t make ai and pathing work against targets that don’t stop moving and can jump.

~~~
Still, I’d be totally satisfied with a tell on PBS if they also made it so that if the shot is so invalid that it doesn’t even launch a projectile you didn’t go on cooldown. The skill just failing is only going to be worse if that ‘tell’ has any kind of cast time related to it.
Doesn’t help that this (depending on the time) makes point blank shot essentially impossible to hit with at the range it’s named after. We can compromise on them making projecitle attacks work better at PB range I guess ><
Doesn’t help that this (depending on the time) makes point blank shot essentially impossible to hit with at the range it’s named after. We can compromise on them making projecitle attacks work better at PB range I guess ><
Acceptable practice? Spawn Camping
All maps have 2 exits.
In hotjoin it could be problematic.
If someone lets him, a LB ranger can pretty effectively spawncamp on Kyhlo, you can cover both entrances easily.
Unless the ranger blows his cooldowns though, you can at least get away with damage taken. It’s pretty kitten hard to successfully get up to the Capture point though.
It’s pretty weak however, because it’s really easy to sneak up behind somebody standing on the platform where you need to be, and they’re really really obvious.
Power rangers filling solo q
with their uselessness, screwing up all matches.
Anet do something, we’re tired.
Worst thing is that most ppl actually think power ranger is good..maybe because rom likes running soloq with that or something..
Flash news for all those power rangers out here: ROM would be good even playing with no traits (And even him while on power ranger has his problems with ppl able to los his lb around)…but you guys are not ROM so just stop being freekills (I already gave up trying to rez those terds up just to see them going down again 3 secs later)…thank you.
That’s a little harsh;
Power ranger (ignoring outliers like ROM) is in 2 phases right now;
Phase 1) It destroys really bad players with little or no skill.
Phase 2) It takes far more skill to help your team with at medium levels, but can be quite effective/useful depending on the player.
The trick is, past absolute noob level, power ranger takes far more work than better builds. It dominates kill counts at that absolute Noob level though, which is why we get all the complaints.
My big question is ‘why aren’t those soloQ point-kittens running turret engineer?’ my theoretical answer: ‘because it’s boring. LB ranger is at least fun’.
That’s a core problem with soloq, its for people w anting an easy time score kitten.
Because of all the chatter, mg ranger looks attractive to those people right now.
they still cant rez/stomp/take a point/win a 1v1.
Its still just find a ledge and pew pew
Those are the terribads the OP is talking about. Not all LB Rangers play like that.
Although I do agree that the influx of people who think, “Gee whiz, I can plink plink 2 plink plink and win!” is making people hate ALL Rangers…even the ones who faithfully played the class before the buffs.
No, people just can’t handle losing and don’t like to learn. Straight pewpew rangers get kills but lose matches (excepting when they’re just countered).
There’s really no room for blame on ranger players, not even bandwagon riders (which I still say are tapering off now). If anything people that would lose anyways should be thankful for the commonly accepted excuse for why they lost.
1) If you don’t know how to game the system for hotjoin, don’t play it as it is an unbalanced mess with constant 3v5 and 4v5 matches.
2) Queue for team arena instead of solo. There are a few reasons for this:
* No Skyhammer
* You will likely join a group of 3 or 4 others playing together that can give you a strategy to follow. This really is much more useful than trying to Rambo to victory in solo queue or hotjoin
* You may actually find some people you enjoy playing spvp with, add them to your friends list, and then play with them in team arenas. This will lead to more victories and less complete blowout losses which are just demoralizing.
This is the problem. “OMG MAXIMISE POINTS I MUST NOT LOSE!”
The fact that all the stated solutions are ‘game the system’ says about as much as it can.
actually pulling Rambo in team pvp is harder than in yoloq @_q
There’s also the problem that you can’t get away from the jerks as easily.
And two dailies and at least one monthly. But nothing else, really.
Still, I have to give kudos to however at ArenaNet came up with the idea of the reward tracks. No, really. You found a way to entice someone like me, who would otherwise not bother with PvP at all to grind through it.
Well…discuss? (shrugs)
Counterpoint: I started in pvp because I wanted a piece of dungeon armor and didn’t wanna deal with the kind of people that run COE.
Pvp (mainly hotjoin) has taken up almost all of my GW2 gametime since, just for the fun of it.
Edit: The reward tracks get people to try, a % fall in love, I’d call that a big success
I was stymied by the title character limit.
I just wonder, in terms of all the ‘celes/stacked might’ complaints if there isn’t a meaningful element of ‘They seem to do more and take less damage than I think they should. I see they have might (sometimes) it must be this thing that people are complaining about!’
This has bugged me for a while, all the ‘nerf celestial/might stacking!!!’ threads, and I’ve never had a clear idea how folks even know for sure. Is it just ‘they seemed to do more damage and take less damage than I was expecting, so it must be Celestial!’?
How about 2 steps?
Remove vulnerability stack
Rooted in place for the cast like Guardian sword #3 or 100 blow
Now there is a real opportunity cost to using the skill.
Although I do not personally feel RF is much of a problem, at least this suggestion gives it a comparative draw back that is similar to other skills of a relative nature.
It’s worth remembering that this is a skill that spent a lot of time on the edge of being not worth using vs the same weapons autoattack.
