Roaming, yes, PvP, very yes, but zerging WvW is a big no. It’s just kitten compared to other classes when more than ~12 people are involved.

Don’t listen to the other people’s flat out “no” because a lot of people run dumb kitten on their ranger and somehow can’t even play the class with the lowest skill ceiling properly.

Bunker warriors are almost solely why I don’t play PvP so much anymore. You have great games where eles and mesmers are in the match and there’s counterplay and reads in there and the bunkers are guardians like they should be and it’s tense and close and everyone says GG… and then you have bunker warriors, putting down a banner and walking in circles. It’s just kittening boring.

Very consistently strong in PvP (has been for a long time). kitten in wvw because WvW’s inflated stats (115% crit damage compared to 60% max) does not pass over onto the pet.

Yes. HGH traits lock you out of the invigorating speed combo and protection injection or backpack regen, which makes me suggest you’’ll have trouble in extended fights against tanky stuff with lots of pressure like hammer/lb war due to a lack of vigour.

Also as others have mentioned, bombs.

Five Guage is a good one. I’m not sure if he streams but I’m pretty sure you can find him in some videos and tournament recordings. Ostricheggs is fun to watch and streams all the time. He also plays a warrior build that not a lot of people are using, which is kind of nice to see. Chaith is another good one. There are probably a lot of unknown good engis out there, as the class is one of the more complex ones to master.

Some more ideas: That 6th man that Gandarel proposed might be a very good solution. Adding a feature that shows a big red button for the 6th player to push to be teleported into the match from anywhere. (If he is out of combat and not in another pvp battle)

This would allow the 6th player to go around and do his own business until bad luck strikes the team. He would then enter the battle from the gates. Allowing the game to keep going. The original teammember could take his place in the next battle again.

In short: Yes! to pauzes in high level team-based play, No! to pauzes in random teams. A 6th teammember could be a better and cleaner solution.

I love this – expanding on it a bit, you know how people (including myself) keep saying how they’d love to spectate tournaments? Why don’t we have a “spectator queue” and allocate one spectator to one team (they can only see their own team, but cannot talk to them) and if a player disconnects, that spectator is instantly subbed in to the disconnected player’s shoes running an identical build? Not sure if that’s possible within the engine but it would be a great fix.

Its a typical mesmer 20/20/0/0/30 greatsword and sword/sword build with decoy, mirror images and blink as utilities and mass invis as elite. Not sure if I would recommend it to anyone, a lot of active defense, but very little margin for error.

“Server Name Bronze Invader [Guild]” should be abbreviated to “SN Invader [Guild]” until you select them, at which point then we get the full title. Beasts should just be “SN Beast” with a slightly different tone of transparent red.

Pretty much any kit/nade engineer build has complete condition coverage besides torment with good uptime. There are several “popular” condition engi builds:

You should not have any problem with D/P thieves, you’re a hard counter, even if they stealth just keep tossing nades and they can’t come close. I’ve only ever died 1v1 with a HGH build to S/D because I give him 25 might and can’t keep up boon coverage.

Thanks heaps for the Engi info. I am absolutely terrible at Engi (it’s the only class I have less than 200 sPvP games on, I hate playing it lol). I assume after the perplexity nerf (which we don’t know how strong/weak of a nerf it will be) that at the very least the HGH build should still hard counter D/P?

Yes. As someone who has played both, between two evenly (high) skilled players, engineer condi builds should be able to beat (“Beat” being a kill, not just one side running) a thief quite easily. Perplex builds are just 3kit builds with perplex runes instead of a regular one, a HGH or kit engineer has an advantage over d/p thieves due to coverage and uptime on conditions (By the time shadow’s rejuv has removed a full set of engineer conditions they’re all off cooldown again and the thief is dead), as well as having strong defensive skills and permanent vigour (on kit, not HGH), AoE CC to catch them in stealth, and so forth. Mainly the coverage, even if a thief blows all his condition removal he’s still going to be covered in several conditions. You should give engineer a go, once you really get into it it’s one of the more fun classes to me, despite having more of a learning cliff than a learning curve.

I think I mentioned this before in the thread but I can’t find it, so, other classes/builds that might not have an issue:

Dhummfire Necro. I’ve never properly played necro but they have a lot of sustainability, as well as pretty good coverage on conditions and strong AoE. Ballpark estimate is that the matchup is necro favoured, although don’t go making a necro on my accord.

Spirit/Condi (Traps?) Ranger. I have played a LOT of condi ranger in tPvP and going against a d/p is definitely a very ranger favoured matchup (I’ll never forget the day I left some traps on a point and I killed a thief while being on the other side of the map… lol) due to high evades, good coverage and near-permanent protection (And soon, sick ‘em). I don’t know if this would be the case in WvW as I play a silly full zerkers sword/greatsword ranger (yolo) but from what I’ve seen a well played spirit trap or quickness condi ranger is definitely the better in this matchup.

S/D Burst ele: Does easily more burst than a dp thief, you’ll be able to instakill them if they slip up before arcane shield is even popped, although this is a high risk/reward build that requires YOU to play better than the thief to kill them. The favoured one here is the better player, it’s a pretty balanced matchup, if you get outplayed you’ll lose.

Skull crack warrior: Can build defensively and do damage at the same time, should be good? Might have trouble catching one though. I don’t run this

I can see two warriors, Kaineng Soldier and Kaineng Recruit, although the bladetrail hits all came from a single warrior which implies bug to me (1 on way through, 1 on way back, 3rd hit how?).

On a side note, what build/class are you running? Glassy as kitten, just my kinda build, I want to try it.

depends if they’re good, but even if they are here’s something I put together:

Initial Defense Rating (IDR)

A class’ starting armor and health levels get a 1-3 score. Each class’ rating is a combination of the values of their armor and health.

6 (3A, 3H)- Warrior
4 (3A, 1H)- Guardian
4 (1A, 3H)- Necromancer
4 (2A, 2H)- Ranger
4 (2A, 2H)- Engineer
3 (1A, 2H)- Mesmer
3 (2A, 1H)- Thief
2 (1A, 1H)- Elementalist

Based on this a Warrior is always going to start with more survivability than any other class, there are four classes with good survival, while Thief, Mesmer, and Ele have the lowest. To me in solo Q, where nobody is communicating effectively, doesn’t it make more sense to bring the 4 and above IDR classes than the lowest?

This is innacurate. Survivability is maybe 10% vit, 20% toughness, 30% boon spam (prot vigour regen) and 40% sustain. Your chart is only taking into account a small part of what “survivability” is. Besides it also assumes that everyone runs around with no amulet and no traits.

I play a Mesmer, and I can beat a good d/p thief 50-60% of the time, IF he stays to fight. Now if he runs away, I will take that as a win because I will interpret that as the thief thinking to himself he can’t win the fight if he stays.

Generally I don’t consider making the thief run away a win because he can come back and gank you while you try and take an objective. However I would classify this as a win assuming you are running a ‘good build’ meaning one that can generally roam fine and you haven’t completely kitten it just to beat a D/P thief. Making a thief run away so that you can capture a camp or something is a win in my opinion (which is why I don’t consider just running something tanky a win, the thief is going to just gank you again while you’re capping and you’ll die.)

Mind elaborating on what you run? If you aren’t running traveler runes then I assume it’s some version of the triple stealth perplexity mesmer?

This sounds believable but I am suspect because then you say that other condi classes can do it to (which is so wrong, ranger warriors necros etc don’t have anywhere near enough condis to kill the standard D/P thief build because it has really good condi removal. However I know the least about Engis (by far) so I could totally believe that they might beat them. Could you link a build?

Not only that but Engis can build extremely durable and still have enough damage through conditions to swiftly take down a thief. Really, anything with condi pressure and survivability is favourable. Necro, Ranger, some Mes builds, Engi, maybe even Warrior.

I haven’t died to a D/P or D/D thief yet on my burst ele but I’ve only been roaming with him for a week so I don’t know if that’s just because I haven’t met any good ones yet. It’s hard to tell when they die instantly.

I won’t tell you the “any class has a chance if you play well!!” bullkitten because they do have an awful lot of favourable matchups if skill is even.

Hmm, maybe this is a good opportunity to get your feedback on the issue.

Sure. I’d love a pause system. I’m going to make a lot of comparisons to another game with a pause system: Dota (2).

Do we freeze everything or do we throw everyone back into their team spawns and keep the gates locked?

Optimally I’d like to see it exactly like Dota: Everything is frozen in place – skills, conditions, the lot, even the player who disconnected, just as if he didn’t disconnect. If people are thrown into their spawns it could cause imbalance – example, if a game is coming down to one team pushing far point, then the other team will get an advantage coming out of the spawn. Because this is extremely difficult due to technical limitations (Believe me… guts you say it’s easy, you haven’t tried to code something like this before. The arrays give me nightmares!) then you should keep the point score, chuck and lock everyone in spawn, and reset all points to uncapped. It’s not perfect but you’ll keep the flow of the game and it’s a good compromise.

Do we add a time window for how long a game can remain paused?

This should be down to the discretion of the player who is in charge of the room, although for tpvp/solo q maybe 1 minute tops pooled time for the whole team for DCers? I don’t want to keep people waiting on things that should have been fixed beforehand.

Tournaments are often run on a schedule, do we keep the game clock running while the game is paused so the game will still end around the same time?

This is a knotty one. Again, I think it should be down to the discretion of the tournament organizers to enforce their own rules on how pauses effect the game.

If the player comes back, do we just resume the action or do we restart the match?

Resume action. Optimally it should be as if the player was never gone.

What do we do when we have to give up on waiting for the player to reconnect?

3 minutes at the maximum tops, or in an organized tournament, admin’s discretion. 3 minutes is long enough for even a potato computer to restart, more than long enough to reset your router, if it takes longer than that it’s a long-term problem.

How do we handle trolls that disconnect on purpose?

This is an unavoidable side effect to pause systems. In dota we call them “tac pauses” and a lot of controversy is often raised over whether a disconnect was deliberate in order to force a tactical pause wherin the team can discuss strategy. Not even valve knows how to fix this, the only thing you can do is limit the amount of pauses so that tac pauses don’t happen too much, and potentially only give control of the pause function to the tournament organizer rather than every player.

Matter of opinion, but in mine, yes. These kinds of things should be fixed pre-game.

Do we disable progression and rewards for a game that doesn’t finish because of a disconnect?

No, don’t punish the rest of the players due to one player’s issue. Whether it gives a win/loss on the leaderboards is something I’m not entirely sure how to handle. If a team is about to lose a player can just disconnect to prevent the match from counting. If it didn’t, matches which are doomed from the start hurt one team’s rating through elements out of their control. I’m going to advocate the current system of 4v5 due to DC = win/loss on leaderboards, due to the fact that the alternative of abuse is far worse and that in solo q this effect will unfortunately balance out over time.

Do custom arena owners want to be able to pause through a command?

Yes, this is important, especially for scrims/tournaments. They should also have an option to turn off player pauses. Be careful though that it somehow doesn’t promote something like skyhammer farming, I don’t know how it would but when progression is a thing in player-created rooms that’s always a potential issue.

No, he’s right. Eles seem bad (because they are, in comparison to everything else on the table) but fresh air has ramped up ele burst builds from “gimmick that wastes all his instant unavoidable burst and then does nothing” to “instant unavoidable burst that chains into constant stream of pain”. If everything else in the game wasn’t so kitten OP I’m sure ele would be a lot more powerful.

But please don’t nerf it because it’s fun as kitten.

And “nerf” doesn’t mean “obsolete”. Even if you think the sky is falling, some good alternatives: earth (with protection injection and that other protection trait that’s like permanent protection) noble (HGH without HGH and 150 condi damage on the side) tormenting (built for engis because of med kit, so nice) undead (yeah) and 2 fire 2 might 2 hoelbrak (HGH/Might stacking runes). Try it out.

Swapping to a kit applies a lingering (5 seconds?) on backpack regenerator. You get ticks when you’re not even in a kit as long as you have been recently.

I run around as an ele just fine (even in semi-heavy zergs) in full zerkers due to the large array of defensive skills, permanent vigour, and CC you can apply to stay alive. Not only that but when you inevitably do go down, Eles have the single best downed skill in the game and you can just run home to your friends to ensure minimal rallybotting. I’m sure you can cope in defensive gear.

Right now Hidden Killer (100% crit from stealth) only applies to the first hit from stealth. Can we change it to “100% on from-stealth skills or on a hit that breaks stealth”? That way all of sneak attack (The pistol skill from stealth) will crit instead of just the first hit. It won’t really make pistol mainhand builds viable but I really feel like that shouldn’t be happening.
