Megaserver

It’s pretty clear they’re going to get rid of servers a la EoTM. They just won’t admit it at the moment in order to keep people from jumping ship right now to the new MMOs coming out.

With megaservers rendering servers obsolete in PvE, servers in WvW is going to be unsustainable — people won’t even know what WvW server they’re on.

The failed EoTM is the future of WvW.

EOTM isn’t a fail, its a very nice map with fun to capture objectives. The problem is that the colours do not mean anything and that it doesn’t affect the score. What they need to do is simple:
A guild should decide to be part of one of 3 alliances of guilds for WvW, they should keep the current match-up going but players should be able to guest on other WvW matchups representing the same side. Well anyway, this is what ESO has done and it works miracle.

TL:DR

As a friend pointed out, with this Megaserver being used in the towns, how are servers going to coordinate WvW Zergs without tipping off the other servers?

Though we are both in agreement that the Mystic Forge should be in every city to reduce the lag of the central hub (Lion’s Arch) and give true PvE players a non-laggy area to do Mystic Forgesmith dailies, the entrance to the Mists and WvW/EotM are in Lion’s Arch which gets laggy plus servers use the central hub city to plan WvW strategies since it is logical to plan at the entrances to these areas.

This Megaserver is making it where servers can’t rally players for surprise attacks in WvW.

I’m pretty sure that this would be a problem never entered Anet’s mind at all.

I’m quite sure the mega server idea is not synchronous with ESO’s release by accident. They are implementing this for marketing purposes, just as the rest of the new “features” are for new players and concerns much less their long-term players who are all geared up.

This feature pack seems like a set of general improvements to resell their game to the new Chinese market.

ESO got their server kitten straight from the beginning and it works well for both PvP and PvE (still too late to know about the end game PvE but the server mechanic in place is solid). Guild Wars 2 devs need to focus on their strength (content creation and combat mechanics) and stop trying to sell TP mine picks and gimmicks.

GW need only 3 things :
GvG and Guild Halls
New WvW maps
New PvE zones

Who want’s to roleplay a calendar? What freedom do you have when everything is on a schedule? It will certainly not make the game feel “Alive”.

I think having everything on a strict schedule along with dailies will make the game feel like a job.

Also it’s easy to foresee people making a path that will guarantee the most loot every day. As they keep repeating that path every day for their legendaries we will just get bored watching a huge zerg rushing to through the content and getting rewarded for it.

Why don’t you just implement guild halls, as a place in which players from all servers can be universally together.

From there, utilize guild halls to implement NPCs which trigger various activities in an instanced, universally accessible to all guild members ‘form’ . Instanced Raid-tier world bosses (teq etc.), guild-missions, or even whole versions of a map.

We’d get 1) Social Hubs for the guild 2) A clear distinction between Guild Activity and the rest of the game. 3) The rest of the game is still there as it is in it’s current state, we just get BONUS guild activity. – Sorry, not bonus, we ACTUALLY GET guild activity.

But really, I don’t even care about the above.

Guild Halls and GvG pls.

I think there is a bug on Anet’s computer: Every time someone mentions Guild Halls or GvG the text become white and on a white background and that is pretty much the same as invisible.

I would like to see stats combo that aren’t 2 specific values (main stats and 2 other stats) like we have now but random numbers that have the same total (within a margin or low/high for balance).

This would make more build variety and would make finding new gear interesting again.

I feel right now the game is “too” balance, therefore everyone has the same gear for the same classes, etc.

It makes no sense for them to have the mega server for PvE and do nothing about WvW. In fact, thinking about it I believe they should make 3 mega servers and redesign WvW to represent those 3 mega servers as 3 WvW alliances.

And turn WvW into Karma Train zerg omniblob central? No thanks.

Pros:
-Multi-server guild repping is no longer completely pointless (yay!)
-world transferring is possible without loosing your hard-earned personal bank guild attached to a specific server.

Cons:
-More annoying guild recruitment messages in wvw to spam the chat log since homeworlds no longer exist for afk-ing or recruitment. (When commanding, I really rely on mapchat to be my eyes and ears and want it clear)

It makes no sense for them to have the mega server for PvE and do nothing about WvW. In fact, thinking about it I believe they should make 3 mega servers and redesign WvW to represent those 3 mega servers as 3 WvW alliances.

If you don’t do WvW then I don’t think you deserve a legendary…
Legendary weapons are legendary for a reason, people who make them do everything.

Im not actually doing WvW for legendaries
Im doing it because I want 100% world completion on my characters

I have no interest in Legendaries because I find nearly all the skins to be ugly
there are a couple I would not mind having but the ammount of work required to get them doesn’t seem worth it to me

there are plenty of other Skins that I like more than Legends
Condition dmg Ascended Sceptor for example looks a million times better than the Legendary Sceptior which looks just stupid to me

there is also the case that seeing countless players with Legendaries on a daily basis completely devalues them to me
they are not rare anymore nor do they seem valuable to me
I would take Wings of Dwayna over Kudzu anyday because it is far rarer to see it thus more valuable to me

Well WvW is part of the world too so you have to live with it. If I was able to do it so can you.

So essentially, Home World will be a WvW distinction only. Home World will have NO MEANING in PvE what-so-ever.

I see this creating an even greater divide between PvE and WvW. WvW players won’t be able to promote the WvW game mode to the PvE community in an effective way. New PvE players won’t even realize that they are associated with a specific WvW server, and they will not organize their social structures to match server assignments.

This is how that LA conversation could go:

  • GoM player: Hey everyone! GoM is going to run a Stomp the Map event in 30 minutes. It will be a lot of fun and it is a great way for you to get a taste of WvW. We will be starting in XYZ borderland, hope to see you there!
  • New player 1: How do I know what server I’m on?
  • GoM player: Well, you will have to go to the character select screen and look it up.
  • XYZ player: I’m from server XYZ, we will be ready for you, lol
  • Experience PvE player: I want to try WvW with my guild, but they are on a bunch of different servers, will that be a problem?
  • GoM player: Yes… yes it will.
  • New player 2: Wait a minute, what is a server?

All of this is to illustrate a point. Server identity needs to exist in a meaningful way in both PvE and WvW. If it does not, then WvW will become its own separate little corner of GW2.

I think it will be possible to maintain server identity in PvE in the new system, but it will require additional systems to do this intentionally. Are any such systems in the works?

Great post. I was talking about this on TS last night and I have some pure speculation. I think that as we get closer to this becoming a thing they will have to lump servers into groups of servers. They would probably take a large, medium, and small guild from each tier and lump them together as a team and for example that team would represent “Green Borderlands” for a given WvW week or two. Then it would all be switched again for the next cycle. It would be a better way to implement this mega server thing that is for sure. You are 100% correct about it diminishing server identity as it pertains to WvW I do however think that for PvE, the mega server thing is better for that. They may have weighed the pros and cons of each and felt like the benefit to PvE far outweighed the detriment to WvW. I can’t say as I blame them since PvE is the main thrust of this game.

I am sure as a dev you have to pick the best possible scenario instead of trying to be all things for all players and I am sure they hate to do it as much as we hate having it happen, but sometimes it’s an inevitable. I fear that this is one of those times.

They have to merge the servers for population issues and imbalanced matchups on most tiers. There is really no way around it…

“Though we are moving to our new megaserver model in PvE, it’s extremely important to us that we maintain the level of identity and competition in WvW that we’ve established since the release of Guild Wars 2. "

Server identity will be gone after the Mega Server merge and that is a good thing. If you wish to create competition you have to first start by balanced matchups and that requires a server merge for many WvW servers as well…

And GvG should play a part in this bright WvW future.

This is essentially a server merger. about 70% of the servers have been empty for months now. Instead of closing them and forcing people to move they are simply moving everyone into the same instance of the map. I don’t know where you are getting your information that you know for certain that the population isn’t dwindling, only Anet knows that and since they are merging servers the evidence would not support your position.

Of course it’s for population issues, I’ve often found myself literally alone on a map. They had to do something and this was totally predictable.

I’m kinda disappointed. WvW need’s the biggest change and it doesn’t look like it’s happening soon.

What exactly are you trying to do with WvW?
The most complex map doesn’t count for PPT and merges servers into colors (not much lore went into that idea), and the old map do not merge servers and count for PPT. Basically you have two different systems in place and none of them are really satisfying:

The merge servers with no PPT is boring because everything seems meaningless.
The independent servers with PPT are totally unbalanced and now more than ever often empty.

ESO got their AvA system solid from the start without hesitation about hurting people’s feeling of virtual server-bonding. While you join a specific campaign (matchup) you can guest on other alliances when yours is full. It’s not terribly complicated, solves all population issues.

You can argue all you want about “server’s pride” but eventually someone will have to make the decision of merging the empty servers, reorganizing the maps and overflow, and making everything count for PPT.

Please Merge WvW in a system that functions well and make EOTM count for PPT.

Only if you want to get rid of all of your established WvW communities in one single change.

~MRA

ESO does it fine, I don’t see why GW2 would fail doing the same thing. It’s GUILD wars anyway, not SERVER wars. Anyway our community is already dissolved as most WvW guilds moved to higher tiers.

They will have to do it eventually as population diminishes. 100% certain from the beginning that EOTM was made to test how the servers would handle that.

So, you’re going to place random guilds from random servers into random match-ups?

Guilds that like to coordinate with other specific guilds in WvW will be left in the dust. I understand that this isn’t an issue for Abyss since you can queue a map all by your lonesome, but this would have a huge impact on a lot of server communities.

I get that this would help alleviate some of the population problems in various tiers, but it would also make WvW more zergy. Please no.

Your speaking about technicalities, we Vulcans embrace technicalities….

Point is, it can work.

The sense of entitlement in this topic is dazzling. I do feel for anyone with any duplicates, don’t get me wrong. But things like “Anet NEEDS” “I have the RIGHT” A-net doesn’t need to do anything and they owe you nothing, the game is in their hands.

All we can do is make suggestions, like the OP has done and raise awereness to issues, but whichever descision A-net makes, is the one we’ll all have to life with.

And on that note I’d like to express my concern about the Eternity issue, I think it would be a smart step for Anet to prevent Eternity’s market sinking and that it’d be unwise to just count on very few people being able to abuse it. Anything else concerning the Wardrope and Legendaries would be a bonus in my eyes.

Yes but on the opposite side if Anet doesn’t respect the hardcore players many guilds will die (when their leaders and officers leave) and the game population will suffer from it. I also haven’t spent a penny on the TP for the last 6 months because of how inconsequential Anet has been. You could see this was coming…

People who think TESO is a threat have clearly never tried it.

The fact that you can’t play your favorite race and with your friends is a shameful thing to do in a MMO. It’s like a really poorly made Alliance and Horde.

But don’t worry! If you play pay more you can play in any faction!

I love guild wars, played it plenty but:
ESO is a blast:
Pve areas about 8-10 times the size of Pve Areas in GW2. You can play in first person view and there are indoors areas. There is so much more lore than in GW, everything is voice acted. The trait and skill system is very complex and offer great variety. Network performance is better and graphics can be just stunning.

It has improved on a lot of concept that you will find in GW, like WvW siege is more varied and doesn’t take supplies. The WvW map is about 25 times the size of Eb in this game but it has more choke points.

Honestly I don’t think this “feature patch” is going to make me come back from ESO. Anet is going to have to provide new end-game content eventually. But without GvG this game PvP modes will start to look old in a few weeks.

Obviously ESO isn’t Guild Wars; jumping is a bit clunky and there are no combo fields, however the amount of content to explore is breathtaking.

You are all misunderstanding if you think people doing legendaries didn’t do them for the skins. Back half a year legendaries were exotics with normal stats, you ONLY did them for the skins.

Now you’re telling the most hardcore players : “those hundreds hours you spent to make your second incinerator were a waste, you should just have waited and done another legendary instead”.

It’s not right at all. Anet NEEDS either to unbind the legendaries and let people with duplicates sell the duplicates or give them another non-duplicate legendary skin.

This topic may have been already been brought up by someone – if so, my apologies.
If what I hear and read is true, then this patch -despite having a lot of good sides to it- might screw me over big time in multiple ways.
So, for the record, when I (for example) make an incinerator, I can access this skin on every character, and equip as many of the skins as I want. (I can have 100 incins in my inventory, correct?)
For me one of the reasons I play this game (and probably for many others) was to feel exclusive. Which I felt, having six legendaries across my characters. I also carry double incinerator. Would this mean I made my 2nd one for absolutely no purpose at all? And the 5x Abyss, 4x celestial, 5x midnight fire, and 2x white I have on all my chars? The T3 I have on multiple characters? Have I bought all of this for nothing?
Excuse me if my post may be seen as whining, and you are probably like ‘first world problems chill out play the game’ – But as I stated, it is merely a personal reason for me to play.
1. This patch will make 3000g I spent go to waste.
2. This patch will make legendaries a lot more common (people can just walk around with different copies when having only 1 or 2, if I’m correct), and ruin that exclusive touch that I and some others had.

Correct me if I’m wrong here though. But please, if you intend to reply just to tell me my reasons for saying this are stupid, don’t bother to reply. ^-^

I have about 1000g spend in duplicated dyes and bunch of duplicated gem armor sets. A lot of this I got with real money. For this reason I’m getting ESO and taking a break from GW.

While I do realize that the critical damage stat is currently dis-proportionately high in the current set-up, that is the ONLY thing that made celestial even remotely viable. Celestial was never considered the best, or even in the top 5, but was considered to be rather versatile. Now, if a 6% boost is all that’s given in return for it’s immensely reduced damage output, 100% celestial gear can NEVER be viable in ANY situation… It’s damage output, which is bad to begin with, will soon be outright terrible.

Your 100% right. Complete celestial builds (ele for example) is now rendered completly useless.

You do not understand, over the course of the year I used real money to buy in total 500g+ worth of Flame and Frost dyes, Abyss and Celestial for multiple characters.

We’re talking between about 50$ for what is now NOTHING.
Sure it’s great for people who never bought gems or new players. But for those of us with less time for farming and that used money we are getting ripped off.

I’m sure that is very frustrating; however, I support ANet making that change (despite having duplicates of things myself) because it was widely requested by the playerbase. You were able to enjoy the dyes you bought on your character, and you will still be able to do so afterward, even if it is frustrating to know that you spent more than was needed to.

The difference is that with the change to town clothes, we will not be able to enjoy our town clothes the same way that we did before the change. The usability of town clothes and costumes while in combat was also widely requested, but the way it has been implemented it is a change that directly impacts anyone who has purchased one of these items. The outright removal and depreciation of town clothes into tonic form was not requested by anyone and is inferior than the products that were paid for.

I am not questioning the merit of what they are trying to do, but only pointing out at the seriously lacking compensation for those who have invested real money.

I see this as a huge problem:
Many people (probably thousands, including me) bought duplicate sets of gem armors and gems to get duplicate sets of the very expensive dyes.

Now we spent REAL MONEY on stuff that is now rendered useless and will be compensated with a cheap uni dye (for dyes) or nothing (for armor wardrobe).

As much as I may want to bash the Devs over the town clothes part of this…

I think you’re looking at it wrong. Your dyes and (normal) armor are not getting nerfed at all. Let’s say you got two of the Phalanx armor sets. That’s all you can ever have with the current system, two sets, unless you buy more. But now, you’ll be able to put it on as many characters as you want, cheaper. Also, if you accidentally transmute away a Phalanx skin, you don’t have to buy a whole new set to get that part back. You’re getting MORE for your money, not less. It’s just that the more copies of it you bought, the less of an improvement it is. Even so, it’s still an improvement, not a loss.

The same goes for dyes. Unless you’ve gotten a dye (Abyss, for example) for every character you have, and stockpiled enough for any character you may ever have, then you’re not losing anything with the dye change. You’re gaining. Again, those who have it on fewer characters do gain more, but everybody gains.

In these two areas, ANet is doing well by us. No regrets about dyes and normal armor, we all gain, no losses.

You do not understand, over the course of the year I used real money to buy in total 500g+ worth of Flame and Frost dyes, Abyss and Celestial for multiple characters.

Let me get this out of the way straight up;

I play (mostly) elementalist, staff power elementalist. I have played it since headstart and will continue to do so until gw3 comes out in 2 years from now.

It aches me very much that you are deciding to shut down one of the already borderline gone builds in the game; power builds, because dungeons were faster than you wanted. As an elementalist, I have struggle beyond human belief to stay alive amidst backstabbing thieves and eviserate warriors, PU mesmers and dhummfire necros, MM necros and zoo pet rangers, hambows and condi warriors, D/P and S/D thieves, bunker engis and perplexity bunkers. As you can imagine, it has been a long and frustrating path, but I held on tight, because, at the end of the day, while I had no healing to offer, no health to tank any stray AoE, no low CD CC to provide, no conditions to reliably put, I still had my damage to give in a teamfight when everyone turned theirs eyes away from me.

Now you have taken that damage away, and here is whats wrong with conditions and why they will destroy the health of the game;

-Passive, non-skill dependent point-&-click insta win buttons on low CD
-No real warnings. Most of them are point and click or insta cast, unlike most AoE power based spells
-Damage simply ignores defense. Low hp classes such as eles and thieves got the most to lose.
-Very few counterplay, cleanses on longer CD than condi reapplication. Not fun to watch.

This will affect roamers and small scale combat the most. Prepare to have WvW become the same monotonous inbalanced poor state of an esport that sPvP has become, only that in WvW it will be worst. Power classes had a chance at beating things in WvW due to stats difference, now, no more.

Anyways, I know it is a rant and all that, but step by step I feel Anet wants to mvoe from skill-based game to point-&-click for casuals who are too stupi…… unskilled to dodge a giant red circle with a delayed explosion. Yay for passive playing

tl;dr

Yo they don’t care about the ele: They removed healing in mistform and have been admitting for months that we have a survival problem (which we didn’t have before their EPIC FAIL NERFS). Their latest “help” has been to nerf our 2 most essential traits (elemental attunement and healing on cantrips) and they are apparently going to improve or survival again in the next patch by giving massive damage boost to the warrior and guardians, while we are the most affected by the celestial gear upcoming mess and crit nerf (because crit is the only good offense of ele).

Our staff first skills are still slow as hell and our traits have no synergy. They will even nerf Meteor Shower, our best spell (that often doesn’t hit anyone for unexplained reasons) will become super easy to dodge.

So whatever, roll another class or go play the new MMO coming out. I’ll certainly not be re-gearing my ele, so I’ll be doing the later.

It speaks volumes about this game when costumes and wardrobes are the most popularly discussed topics.

/facepalm

Yeah, I’m just not happy that I bought 4 charred dyes at 150g for nothing.

I find these changes to be inconsequential with the effort we have put in the game.

I have bought over 1000g’s worth of expensive dyes across my characters, now your telling me that I bought 4 charred dyes at 150g for nothing? Will I get my gold back?

I have bought many gems armors which I have replaced with newer gem armors, will I get them back?

Frustrated with the lack of WvW improvements.

ESO’s AvA is better than GW2’s WvW but ESO has floaty combat, horrible movement, and dated graphics.

The graphics overall aren’t dated just character models.

I’ll be playing ESO in first person view anyway for the challenge and immersion… From what I’ve seen AvA looks pretty amazing. I don’t plan of completely leaving GW2, but ESO will be a breath of fresh air, at least for a while.

Why no 1v1 Matches?

Because the classes aren’t balanced. A staff ele for example has absolutely no chance in 1 vs 1 against a d/d thief.

What they could do is add 2 capture points inside the jumping puzzle that give +5 PPT and one at the end that gives +10 PPT (and prevent mesmer teleporting).

This would bring people back.

Nerfing Warrior regen...why Anet!? WHY!?

Come on you got TWICE more health than an ele and all your skills do equivalent damage in instant casting time (ele skills half as powerful as hundread blades take 5 seconds to cast). On top of that Warriors can run away from battle faster than all other classes. A small regen nerf isn’t even going to be noticeable.
