how does downleveling and gear work?

in Players Helping Players

Zenyatoo.4059

My level 80 ele is downleveled to 31 in gendarran.
407 power
323 toughness
354 vitality
In my exotic armor.

My exotic chestpiece grants him 101 power, 72 toughness, 72 vitality
My rare chestpiece grants him 89 power, 64 toughness, 64 vitality (it’s level 80 like the exotic one)

When I switch to the rare chestpiece from the exotic my new stats are
404 power, 321 toughness, 353 vitality

Remove chestpiece completely and I have
383 power, 306 toughness, 337 vitality

From this we can infer several things
1. armor is downscaled
2. exotics will still be better than rares/masterworks/uncommons. This is more noticeable the higher zone you go into, as the difference between the scalings grows wider (youll note that the rare chestpiece differed by 1 vitality when scaled to 31. But if I was in say a level 70 zone, that would probably be closer to 7 vitality.)

additional notes:
Im not sure at what level it is gear starts to have 3+ stats. But the level 35 rare gear from AC only has 2 stats on it. Meaning that despite any scaling it is worse. If you want some more concrete numbers:

My exotic boots: 34 power, 24 precision, 2% crit (my precision at 31 is 287)
With the rare 35 boots that have: 10 power, 1% crit (my power drops from 407 to 401, and my precision from 287 to 282)
Thus even equal (or closer to) leveled rares for the downscaling are still worse than downscaled gears.

What does this mean for you as a player?
1. Better stats will help regardless of downscaling. But they will not allow you to steamroll lower level content
2. While I havent done concrete testing for it, it’s highly unlikely that gear upscales in a different pattern. Which means in WvWvW your gear can and will matter, especially as a low level, to the point where a level 25 blue will still be worse than a level 50 blue, which will be worse than a level 70 blue, and so on. While I dont know how the scaling works exactly, it’s easy enough to tell for yourself that upscaled players are often much weaker than non upscaled.

The search function of this forum seems rather defunct. At least in my experience.

Here’s an experiment.
Go to the crafting section of the forums. In the search bar type the following “Goblet of kings”

or just “goblet” or “kings”
Now go to (currently) page 4 of the crafting section and look for the topic called “Goblet of kings” here’s a link if you cant find it: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Goblet-of-Kings

You will note that absolutely no term in the title, or in the post was/can be found via the search function. I have no idea why this happens. But it happens all the time. I will often be looking for a topic I have posted in, and cannot get any results for it from the search, despite using what I would have thought were proper keywords. (the goblet post is really just an example because it helps to illustrate that neither the title nor any of the text from any of the posts seems to come up as a result from the search function. At least, not for me)

Does anyone know why this is/has experienced this?

at the start of the metrica zone are 5 schools each with golems in the arena.

Aeronautics, Hydro-something, terra-something, incerna-something.
They each have golems, AER, HYD, RCK, INC, there is also an asura with a golem called HRT.

They can occasionally all meet up, at which point they start making fun of the guy with HRT.

Then another asura with a large black golem called WST walks up and starts to mock them all. Suddenly the 5 schools combine their golems. Utilizing the technology of fire, earth, wind, water and heart to turn into META-golem who then battles the evil Waste golem.

tl;dr large captain planet reference at the start of metrica.

+1 for nerf to Whirlpool

@ diogo

whirlpool did several things to me
1. made me an incredibly obvious target when I channeled it and then turned into a whirlpool
2. made me move slower
3. removed my defensive capabilities

Any smart player does a few things here. But usually its getting the heck out of dodge. Holding S and dodging twice is usually more than enough to dodge the entirety of a whirlpool. Indeed I once fought for over 2 hours underwater during a WvWvW and I was never once touched by whirlpool because its ridiculously easy to see coming. Now, I certainly killed people with mine, but at that point it’s because they didnt dodge. You might as well complain about hundred blades. yeah it smacks you for 20K, but it’s your own kitten fault for standing in it the whole time.

at the end of the day most people consider the elementalist tradeoff (that is, lowest hp and lowest armor) to be made up by our 20 skills. Which is rather confusing. Because 3 of our elites (4 if you’re a charr) remove those 20 skills. 2 of these elites also remove our utilities. And force us to move slower for the duration. If I activate tornado in any serious setting I fully expect to be dead in the next 5 seconds. I expected similar results with whirlpool given that it worked pretty much the exact same way with the minor difference of the direction it pushed/pulled people. But I guess because it was underwater somehow dodging just stopped being a thing people realized they could do? I dunno.

Fort Aspenwood | Maguuma | Sea of Sorrows

Speaking as a fort aspenwood player I think our biggest problem is no one wants to spend money. o.o

we’ll fight a maguuma garrison and they’ve got 5 arrowcarts on the walls in safe spots and in the keep room itself. You check an FA wall on our garrisons and we’ve got zip. Half our stuff doesnt even have upgrades ticking when full of supply.

we also only very rarely seem to have proper strategy for keep busting. I know earlier in the matchup maguuma were holding the hills (dont remember if it was shad, or EH.) but they had tons of carts lined up in that choke. Our commander and a mesmer got everyone to wait, had the mesmer break through the lines and open a portal in the back of the room unoticed. We swarmed in behind maguuma and took the keep. Stuff like that is really cool to see.
Sadly I see more things like the most recent maguuma garrison bust I was a part of. In which maguuma had several carts (couldnt count them as they literally refused to render for me) guarding a choke into the keep lord room. The only concern was that to the immediate right of our zerg was a set of stairs that when you walk up allows you to completely bypass the chokepoint. I literally hopped into the keep lord room without taking a scratch. And even after telling the zerg where it was, they threw themselves head first into the chokepoint and died. Meanwhile SoS took bay because we had no defenses at it and it was un-upgraded.

Fa certainly has the capacity to do great things. But it seems most of our advantage comes from outnumbering our opponents for ~16 hours a day.

Money making – A brief guide from someone with 60g and whose friend has 120g with neither of us having ever played the TP at all

1. dungeons. The best dungeons to run are AC, CoF and HoTW.
AC – There are a few champion scavengers/howlers during the runs. 2/3 of them drop 5 silver. Eating an omnomberry bar raises this to over 7silver. Pure profit. The bosses also drop quite a bit of money (which is also raised by an omnomberry bar) most runs are 7s + 7s +22s +26s -2s (the bar) in 30 minutes. You can do all 3 paths 30 minutes each. with lucky drops thats almost a gold in 30 minutes for a first completion. (pop the omnomberry after you kill, or just before kohler, the drops before that arent really worth it at all)

CoF – path 1 and 2 only.
Finish them as you would normally. Path 1 takes ~15 minutes with a good group.
Take the 60 tokens. Buy 2 rare level 70 helmets with them. Salvage, and hope you get ecto. Profitiability varies. You could end up with only 26s+drops or you could get 26s+drops+3ecto. (45s on TP right now) per path.

HoTW – path 1. Other paths can be done, but are pretty long.
Same deal as CoF. Clear the run, get the helmet, salvage it.

The other potential ecto dungeons are CoE and Arah. Neither is really worth doing for that chance at ecto. Also as far as I am aware, no other dungeon has money drops like AC does.

Other money making -
Events, cursed shore, Frostgorge, ETC. While it seems counter productive, you usually want to find the events with a few people, but not too many. Tagging monsters can be hard in certain events, especially with bots. I can fill a 110 slot inventory in 1 grenth completion, but if I were to do pentinent 10+ times i’d probably still have slots left over because the mobs are dead before I can even hit them. The end chests also have a chance (albeit slight) for legendary precursors. Which, if you are doing them to reach that 1million karma, does mean you’ll be opening them quite a few times.

Other farm spots -
Anywhere lodestones drop. Lodestones can come from dungeon chests. But at the end of the day you could always saddle up the MF gear and go grind NW corner of frostgorge hoping for corrupted lodestones.

Anywhere specific crafting mats drop – blood, poison sacks, and scales are always in high demand. I know that the krait and ooze in WvWvW have a fairly high chance of armored scales. I do not know about other zones. But if you think youve found a good spot for it you could try these.

you dont have to bring her to 30% IIRC.
you kill one of the 4 members of DE, she shows up and you burst her down (it’s much more like 90% AFAIK) then she stops rezzing and wont try to rez that member again (meaning the fight gets easier as it goes along)

the typical kill path is like this
1. mr sparkles – wont respawn/faolin doesnt try to respawn him
2. eir – lowish hp, most dangerous (her spreadshot can and will gib 1-3 players with ease)
3. rytlock or logan, whichever is lower after eir is dead – most dangerous after eir
4. zojja – least dangerous

And all you’ve done is prove that you’re really good at arguing against statements no one made. I welcome you to point to where I said anything about speed runs or Rangers being taken over other professions (neither is really relevant anyway, since the rest of the thread is speaking generally and you’re talking about a much more specific activity)

For your benefit, just so you don’t have to scroll up, I’ll reiterate:
“Rangers bring virtually nothing to the table EXCEPT dps and some moderate offensive utility.”

As someone fond of discovering hidden meanings within statements, I’m sure there’s a dozen different things you could infer from that, but I feel like ruining the fun for you, so I’ll just say it. A Ranger in the right hands is dangerous and bursty. A Ranger in incompetent hands is nearly worthless.

Play with better Rangers. I know they’re hard to find, but they do exist.

Maybe you should recheck what I said.
“lackluster DPS”
This indicates the following: I believe the ranger DPS to be less than other classes, making it lackluster.

Your response was this
“Rangers bring virtually nothing to the table EXCEPT dps”

Which given what I said, seems to mean you were attempting to argue against my claim that rangers do lackluster DPS. Which is why I tried explaining to you that they totally do.

Somehow you intended to say this instead but failed at it.
“A skilled ranger can do some burst!”

My response to that point is the following
“Not even nearly as much as a skilled warrior”

The videos I posted served to exhibit this. I claim ranger DPS is lackluster, I back this up by pointing out, in runs for which DPS mattered the most, no one brought rangers. I dont really know why you seem to believe I am arguing against things no one said. Because I said in my first post, “lackluster DPS”

But here i’ll tl;dr it for you again in as plain terms as I can

warrior DPS > ranger DPS (which you have stated is what the ranger class brings to the table)
Ranger utility < other classes utility
Other classes > rangers for dungeons

Your point about skill is mostly meaningless BTW. As all it indicates is the following:
If I need to PuG a dungeon, im better off taking any other class, because even an incompetent player from another class wont be as worthless as a ranger. While it’s fine to be a class that relies heavily on skill, that does not make you better dungeon runners.

elementalist also has a bunch.
10% passive in air
25% passive in air (currently bugged to only 10% IIRC)
15% passive in arcana
10% passive on a signet

Ride the lightning moves over twice as fast as swiftness
swiftness upon attuning to air
swiftness from updraft (which also rolls you away from target, giving you extra speed, and a dodge)
swiftness from the staff 4 skill (which also removes cripple and freeze)

@ nethelli

which is why all the high DPS groups that do serious speed runs and burst down DPS check bosses in a matter of seconds run with rangers right?

OH WAIT. My mistake. That doesnt happen at all. They run warriors and guardians, and thieves. Not rangers. Because your DPS is poor comparatively. Especially against clusters of monsters because you have no AoE.

I mean lets see here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f95nN93dQs (3x warrior, guardian, ele)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RM-jwwCO1c (Boon, who are known for this sort of thing: guardian, mesmer, 2x thief, warrior. This was pre-nerf BTW. As in, when your DPS actually mattered during the fight.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6_MTW_ia2o (2 guardians, necro, warrior, ele)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ighs-IakvoU (mesmers, 3 warrior, guardian)

So want to tell me again how rangers are totally used over the other classes for their DPS? Because its certainly not true. I’ve played a ranger. I still play my ranger. But I can assure you the DPS is nothing to write home about. If anything, you’ve proved my point about your lack of utility in any sector that isnt DPS, which any good player has seen and realized is lower than a warrior of equal gear and skill.

ice elementals. The ones from the jormag event. And possibly from the northwest corner of frostgorge.
Also I believe the ones in Orr in the grenth temple do (I know for a fact the ones that explode during the high priest of grenth event drop them.)

And I think any spawned elementals in HoTW have a chance to drop them also.

God tier:
Guardians – survivability, healing, supporting, reflecting, general awesomeness. There’s a reason PuG groups are seeking these guys.

High tier:
Warrior, Thief, Ele – They bring the DPS. Or in some cases, crazy amounts of support.

Mid tier:
engineer, necro, mesmer – Certainly viable, but they usually dont outshine the other players. A necro or mesmer can seriously bolster a teams output against DPS check bosses (Effigy, simin, ETC) but that’s quite niche. Mesmers would probably be higher if their phantasms didnt overaggro.

low tier:
ranger – Limited AoE, lackluster DPS, most utility is in a form that every other class can do and better, and an annoying pet that overaggros all day long. Usable in dungeons? Yes. But worth taking over another class? Not unless you know for a fact that the ranger is far more skilled.

Is the Simin boss fight working as intended?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Zenyatoo.4059

Zenyatoo.4059

Here is my experience with simin.

I spent 4 hours on this lady. Swapping out members every hour or so because theyd give up. We tried pretty much everything.

Some notes about simin:
her stealth is based on hp and time. But it works like this
1st stealth – Her first stealth is always ~50% hp.
2nd stealth and onward – Her second and all subsequent stealths are based on a few things. 1. what is her HP before she de-stealthed. If it’s over 60% hp then her next stealth will be at 50%. If it’s under 60% hp then her next stealth is based on time

She also seems to regen faster the lower hp she has. What this means is that either you outright kill her between that second stealth, or you never kill her at all unless you can consistantly get the sparks to the traps in under 10 seconds. Which rarely happens.

Indeed, every video i’ve seen of this boss utilizes 2 bugs.
1. extra spark – Sometimes, rarely an extra spark spawns. When this occurs, the next time she stealths, the sparks will all instantly die
2. 1 spark clear – sometimes it will only require 1 spark to the statue to make them all die.
Using these groups can get lucky and have a fight go like this:
simin stealths
goes over 60%
extra spark is alive
she goes to 50, stealths, sparks all die instantly
bursted down to ~25% hp, stealths, single spark gets ran to center, she destealths and they kill her.

This however is completely frustrating to me, as literally every kill of her ive seen uses one or more of those bugs. meaning during the 4 hours I fought her where they didnt occur, it was basically impossible for us.

the bugs I was plagued with were instead sparks that didnt trigger circles, or circles that didnt indicate they still needed a spark. Causing basically every other spark lure to take well over 20 seconds.

If I were to fix simin
1. make sparks melee – luring ranged monsters is stupid. Either make them melee, or hell, change them to melee risen or something if sparks need to stay ranged. Basically just let us lure melee things instead
2. make the circles work properly – for starters I should easily be able to tell which circle doesnt have a spark. I should also not have to lure that spark over said circle 4 times before its accepted. Make the circles distinct, maybe color change or something. And make them check for a spark every 5th of a second or something. So I dont have to keep re-luring over them
3. maybe lower simins regen – I would call this a last resort nerf. But the encounter might just be too much like CoF in that you need 5 DPS and incredible luck to do it
4. fix her firestorms – it’s weird that her AOE can randomly shift between doing 800, 5000, and 9000 damage to me. Have different indications per damage, or fix them to actually be consistent damage.
5. change petrification – if simin is gunning for you, then there is literally nothing you can do. At one point I burned through literally 20 tears in a matter of seconds because everytime I cured my teammate she re-petrified him. I would seriously pick up a tear, throw it, then pick up another one and throw that and they would both remove separate petrification from him.

Right now this boss is INCREDIBLY buggy. There’s not actually a single mechanic in this boss fight that seems to be working properly. horrendously sloppy work and im saddened that it got the A-ok somewhere in the chain of command.

Ive done every path of arah now besides seer. They’re really not that bad besides simin.

Simin was just… ugh. Literally every group ive seen do simin had it glitch out such that during one of the spark pulls they only needed to lure 1 spark (causing her not to regen at all)

Tried for 3 hours last night and that never happened once. Also the circles were constantly bugging out so you couldnt tell where the last spark was meant to go, and sometimes it would path through the circle about 4 times before finally deciding to be caught.
Anet seriously needs to revamp simin
1. make them melee monsters, holy kitten luring ranged things into circles is the dumbest idea ever.
2. Make the circles actually work properly. I should be able to see which one isnt filled, and the monster shouldnt be able to be standing directly ontop of said circle and not be caught.
3. Give some indication for her firestorm attack when its damage spikes. Right now there’s literally no difference between the firestorms that do 800 damage, the firestorms that do 5000 damage, or the firestorms that do 9000 damage. You will note that this boss is basically impossible without a heavy DPS comp. Which means those firestorms can and will kill someone in under 2 seconds if they dont immediately react to something that they may have believed wouldnt do all their hp in damage.

Another level 80 zone

in Suggestions

Posted by: Zenyatoo.4059

Zenyatoo.4059

So most people who hit 80 are disappointed in Orr. They hate the monsters, they hate the terrain, ETC. In fact, the only reason most people are in Orr is the loot. Thus I propose a solution.

In it’s base form it’s simply adding another 80 zone designed to be more fun. The question is how to do so.

1. Add a quest post-zhaitan fight. This quest has you talk to the queen to get a letter that lets the guards near ebonhawk let you through the gate
2. this then lets you enter a crystal desert zone.

This zone would have a few key difference compared to orr
1. terrain – The terrain would be sand (obviously) but it would be far less twisty. This negates the problem that many players feel like they dont know where to go
2. enemy variety – Minotaurs, scarabs, breeze riders, hydra’s, giants (this is a big one for anyone who doesnt feel like doing the kol event 1000 times for that achievement), devourers, basiliks, other lizards and birds, Branded, ETC. The monster variety is a big part of why Orr is unfun. Youve got risen, and risen, and risen, and tar. That’s about it. Monster variety would keep the new zone fresh and interesting, as well as allow players to finish their daily

It would however be similar to orr in several aspects
1. loot – loot would be just as good as cursed shore.
2. events – events should also be all over the zone. Like in Orr. You could also work large event chains into it fairly easily

Lore notes:
Kral is in the crystal desert, so you, as a hero who helped defeat zhaitan, have been given permission to aid the pact scouting force which is in the crystal desert monitoring krals movements and his forces. Events would comprise of helping NPC’s set up and defend bases. Investigate branded troop movements, or simply to hunt down fearsome monsters (you all know you want a giant hydra boss!)

Basically, another level 80 zone, designed to be far more fun than Orr due to changes in terrain and monster makeup, while also keeping equivalent amounts of loot/events.

Pets are awsome in phase 2 and 3 for lupicus. Phase 2 lupicus does shadow walk onto the pet, and phase 3, lupicus does agro on the pet. It takes some stress off the players.

Also the spark phase, we all got our preferences, but id rather hate on the mesmer as their illus are much more annoying that pets. Pets arent even a issue here.

Phase 3 lupicus drains hp. AFAIK he can do this for pets. Which generally speaking wont dodge it like players do. o.o

I dunno, I think i’d accept a mesmer phantasm just because time warp is so good on simin. As soon as the first spark phase is over, pop that time warp and simins hp just plummets. as long as they’re keeping their phatasms in check it’s ok. Which is pretty much “as soon as sparks spawn I explode them all” that’s all it takes.

A good ranger would call back his pet OR swap it out to avoid the life steal;( You need a good ranger;)

Simini, yeah mesmer ult is very usefull but other than that lol…at simini idk. But the Sword + Dagger + snake traps + zephyr + Frost spirit from the ranger during Siminis fight is exceptional;) + the pet swap. The Dps keeps on piling up,

I still dont think you’d outDPS a warrior on simin. But I digress.

and your point with lupicus is still null. because at the end of the day it means that I would need to find a highly skilled ranger (of which I have apparently never found ever) just to not have them be a detriment to my team. :|

He jumped down from the battlements into our siege force. Charged up to me (6K damage) did bladetrail (10K damage) hit me once to down me and then ran back inside his keep. All this happened in about 4 seconds, and he had several player shooting him as he made his way back inside.

I go longbow/Sword+dagger. I still say your rolling with ranger noobs:) I have nearly 700hours on my Ranger alone. I know what im doing and I can assure you that if a Ranger knows what to do. The problems above shoudlnt be a problem.

Lupicus shouldnt even be on the list;) Path 4 sparks, a ranger pet can HELP a lot of used properly. Call back pet with f3 and tap f4 to swap it out at the right time. BOOM free spark lured:)

I’ve never experimented with sword/dagger. But from looking at the skills it does seem much better than shortbow. Still lacking in the AoE department though. How do you handle paths with tons of risen grubs, or even just tons of normal risen? How do you deal with any dungeon that spews out trash monsters in large quantities for that matter? Also I run all 3 AC paths every day for the money it gives. Can Sword/Dagger allow you to hit the burrows properly? If not, do they allow you to take and hold aggro of the tons of gravelings?

also i’ll bring up lupicus as it’s in every arah path, which is where teamcomp, exotics, and so on actually do matter. And pets just arent good for phase 1 or 3. And if you have a bad phase 1 phase 2 is worse. and if you have a bad phase 3, then the fight takes ages.

As for spark luring, you can usually just do 3 on 1 player and 2 on another which is easy enough without a pet. If anything i’d consider pet a disadvantage here, because it may mean you have to regulate the ranger to a specific role just to counter the fact that his pet likes to draw aggro. .

A skilled ranger can do wonders with their pets. A noob ranger doesnt utilize the pets various abilities. A skilled ranger will also utilize traps when necessary, and in the AC dungeon? A rangers spike + fire trap which creates a combo field does wonders to the over all dps of the team on the mounds. You just havnt played with any good rangers;)

Engis are great to have, they have a lot of toys for different situations. I would strongly recommend having an engi in any dungeon if possible. But of course, same issue as a ranger. The engi needs to know how to change his build for different occasions.

A fire trap. excellent. Meanwhile an ele can drop 2 fire fields without needing to stop auto attacking (which is actually hitting) he also doesnt need to burn a utility slot for it. I really dont think combo fields are a good enough reason to bring a ranger, unless they have a specific combo field type thats hard to get elsewhere. Which fire is really not. I’ve played with plenty of rangers. But the fact is, most of them (no, strike that, ALL of them) have rolled shortbow/longbow. Now, this may be their only viable choice. but it limits their AoE to 2 skills unless they use up their utility slots. Then you get into the single target damage which is less than a warriors by a good margin (while also having less natural tankiness) while this might indicate warriors are OP rather than rangers are UP, it still wont make me bring a ranger over a warrior.

insofar as pets, the issue is rarely what they do in a fight. Here’s an example from arah. During the lupicus fight, a pet will NEVER stack ontop of you. It will always be off the the side. If lupicus puts a grub on the pet (which can happen) then your entire team has to react to that. Something that they wouldnt have to do if you werent a ranger. While not party-wiping, it’s extra work that can often slip up some groups. Also when running along walls in order to fight the champion spider instead of the champion giant, the pet will often refuse to hug the wall (and it cant always be stowed, as there are monsters nearby which put you into combat as you run) this means the pet can draw additional aggro. Likewise for room clearing right before hand, where most people utilize the nearby ledges, pets will charge down into about 6 monsters to reach the target.

Basically a pet needs to be on “dont attack” or stowed more often than not. Which just makes them a ridiculous feature.

I’m not saying ranger players are bad. I’m not saying im happy with the fact that I never bring them. I just know that odds are bringing pretty much any other class will give us a higher chance of success than a ranger will. Rangers fall into a similar vein as ele’s in that they HAVE to be skilled or they will be a detriment. And i’d prefer not to risk it unless I know for a fact that the ranger is skilled. (when I dungeon with my guild we often do have a ranger. But when I PuG I avoid them as much as I can)

the invader gear from WvWvW. There are karma variants and badge of honor variants. The badge of honor ones are stronger.

as for amulets you can get an emerald pendant, but it takes tons of resources or money. Or an invaders amulet, which takes like, 1K badges.

Fav combinations of classes for a dungeon group

Zenyatoo.4059

As someone who is 1 path away from dungeon master, these are my thoughts:

1 guardian – Holy kitten reflect wall and that thing that makes monsters unable to reach you is so good. As someone who has done countless dungeons runs I’m surprised and seriously disappointed in most guardians who never seem to use these.

1 warrior – The damage, the survivability, ETC. 5 signet builds need not apply in serious settings, but can easily slot in during say, a CoF path 1 or something.

1 ele – The staff skills are just really nice. Sadly you arent there to damage, but to support. Reflecting projectile, weakening bosses, throwing down combo fields, and healing is what you are there for. Any ele who spends most of his time in fire attunement might as well just re-roll another class who can actually auto-attack for proper damage without being made of tissue paper.

1 mesmer – As long as they know how to use their phantasms, and when to blow them up when against a boss that punishes you for overaggro. Time warp and Moa form alone are reason enough to carry one of these imo.

1 Thief/necro/warrior/guardian – Take your pick. Thieves have DPS, and stealth reviving. Necro’s have conditions (and sweet sweet poison, which is godly for anything that heals: such as most things in arah) warriors are just overall good, as are guardians.

Things to avoid like the plague – rangers.
Sorry to sound mean rangers, but you usually do not bring much to the table. Lower DPS than other classes, annoying pets that aggro things, and can cause bosses to royally screw people, lackluster AOE’s, inability to hit certain objects (such as the AC burrows) Rangers just do not impress me in dungeons.

Do these even exist tier? – engineers.
I do not play an engineer, nor have I really seen a lot of them, so I cant comment on how they dungeon. Ive yet to meet one who seriously impressed me in some manner. But at the same time ive never gone “man that engy was dragging us down that run”. If any engineers would like to comment on what makes them good and/or bad for dungeons it would be nice.

but TBH just look at the server list. Write down which servers are “full” then check back and see if any of them have gone “high” then enter that one.

Arah Jotun Path - Giganticus Lupicus and his dreaded waypoint run

Zenyatoo.4059

PuG’ed this a few days ago.

Lupicus was really nice to you guys in phase 2. When 3 people were downed I was sure you were all dead. But then he just kind of sat there and watched you all get up. Also is there any reason you guys dont stack up for phase 1? Obviously it works fine, im just curious if there’s a specific reason.

Still definitely doable though. In our run someone did die and run back, leaving 4 of us to fight lupicus in phase 2, but we only had 2 people go down the entire fight after that. TBH the worst part of lupicus is the single green missile he shoots out, which can be reflected if you’ve got a skill that does that.

some tips:

1. the first stealth is based on hp. She does it at ~50%. And spawns 4 sparks
2. the remaining stealths are based on time rather than hp. If you’ve got high DPS you’ll notice it. This means if you feel like you are getting nowhere, you may wish to back off and respec
3. you can hit her while she is stealthed. The typical strategy is to have 2 people running sparks, with 3 people DPS’ing (and one de-petrifying) the 3 DPS drop AOE’s when she stealths, to help keep the damage flowing even when she cant be seen.
4. Poison is a godsend (it affects regen) and it can be put on her while she’s stealthed. Consider bringing a necro with you, just for the mass degen he can apply when she stealths out.

Downed him on jotun path with a PuG.
First try
With a first timer
Only one person died (first timer) about halfway into phase 2.
I think we had like, 5 downs the whole time? (2 in phase 2, 3 in phase 3. 2 of the ones in phase 3 rallied off lupicus dying, so lol)

it’s definitely doable. Even with a PuG.

@ WBL. Ele’s have the absolute worst downed state. You done goofed

ele 1 – bad damage, stacks vuln
ele 2 – immobilize which is useless because you’re generally already ontop of them
ele 3 – vapor form. This was what was screwing you. After 8 seconds of being downed, the ele can turn into vapor, making them immune to physical damage. For a few seconds at least. After it ends they go back to being downed, but with an extra point of downed penalty. After 3 uses if they havent rallied it straight kills them. You also cant rally while inside vapor form

The thing to realize is that they have literally NO way to stop you stomping them for those 8 seconds. At all. ele is the only class that doesnt immediately have access to a skill that prevents stomping. All you had to do was press F once and he was dead for good.

As far as things go, warriors honestly have a pretty strong downed. You can stop a stomp, and even get back up again for a short period of time, which is usually enough to reach a safe area, or help your team out (and possibly even revive yourself) while the chance may be low, you can trait to put it to 100%. Which is far better than most classes.

sure it’s no guardian, but it’s certainly better than ele, or ranger o.o

Ooze king and queen

Zenyatoo.4059

So, anyone who has done path 1 CoF may have noticed these two hopping about down to the left of the bridge you cross after killing the slave driver.

Has anyone killed them before?

I just tried it, and with some creative falling/slipping you can get to them without having to cross through the tunnel that is filled with silver ringed ooze. I managed to kill the queen. Or well, I got her to 50% at which point she hopped into the middle area and vanished. About 25% into the kings hp bar the last member of my party quit and it booted me. So I didnt get to finish.

Anyone know why they’re there even? Seems kind of weird to have 2 random champion ooze off to a side somewhere. I havent fought them in the other paths either. Not even in the other that takes you through the undercroft (path 3) which I assume connects to the viscous caves, which is where they are.

IIRC your gear doesn’t scale up, just your base stats are increased.

I believe nacht has the right of it.
Your base stats are upped, but not gear. Which is why upscaled players have this sort of stigma of being really easy to kill. Because for geared 80’s they are.

Question for the other classes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zenyatoo.4059

Zenyatoo.4059

As an ele player I must ask you guys

was whirlpool actually killing you?

There was a recent nerf to it. It now does 33% less damage. This as far as I can tell would be because it was too strong (I mean, why else would you nerf a skill)

So, to other classes, was whirlpool seriously killing you that much?

For those who are unaware. Whirlpool used to work like this.

1. first the ele channels for ~2 seconds
2. the ele then loses access to all 20 of his normal skills, and all of his utilities.
3. the ele then starts to move slower
4. ele now does 3000 (on crit) damage a second to anyone stupid enough to still be right next to him. For ~10 seconds

additional notes:
The elementalist was fully vulnerable when this was happening (physical hits, conditions, ETC could all still hurt you)

The skill could only be used once every 3 minutes.

Maybe I was just doing something wrong, was there some trick to whirlpool I missed out on? some way to stop my opponent from just swimming away from my (now slowed down) self? or was holding a directional key, dodging once/twice and then proceeding to kill the elementalist just foreign knowledge?

Arcane wave issues

Zenyatoo.4059

Normally i’d post this in bug report. But im not even sure what bug is going on with this thing! So im posting it here first. if someone can shed light on what exactly is happening then we can make an actual bug report.

So for starters, Arcane wave is an elementalist utility skill.

As far as I know it is only meant to hit one time.

Earlier today in WvWvW I apparently hit someone four times with arcane wave. Despite it not actually being equipped onto my bar! (imagine my surprise)

I’ve also read that people were somehow getting extra hits with this skill/taking extra hits from it.

Can anyone confirm/explain why this is happening?

Seems like you should always focus on the stronger server.

in WvW

Posted by: Zenyatoo.4059

Zenyatoo.4059

So
you cant beat a server in your bracket on your own.
And thus your strategy for approaching this is to double team them (which is sound on it’s own) for the sheer purpose of going up into the next bracket to fight teams which in theory are better than the one you already cant beat?

Im not sure I understand that logic at all.

hit a knight with a long range skilled and roll backward
they get aggroed
back up
knight starts to reset at a certain distance (you may wish to get hit once as they’ll leap to you, clearing distance from their friends. With mist form I could single out one knight with ease)
immobilize him, and then annihilate his face (mesmers in the party can use the moa morph to reduce any knight to a laughable encounter)

repeat 4 times.

The tree has literally never been a problem for me. admittedly I used a staff ele for it though, which is basically easy mode for a boss that doesnt move and is rather large (dat meteor shower!)

I’ve never leveled artificing, but you may need to buy a recipe from the vendor in order to create it, or discovery might work.

Here’s one to try:
elder scepter rod
elder scepter core
explorers mithril imbued inscription (2 mithril plated dowels + 15 large claws)
that should be the recipe for a 375 scepter. Assuming you cant chuck all that into discovery by itself you may need to purchase recipes.

it gave me 5 ori ore.
Whether this is abnormal and thus makes the BL pick better (as in, the node should have only given me 3, but the BL pick upped it to 5)
or normal with a bug in that the node shut off too soon (rich ori usually gives me ~5 per 3 mines with my ori pick)

I dont know.

But I do know that I was able to mine ori with the black lion pickaxe.
