The problem is, the dev responsible for Thief is also responsible for 1 or 2 other professions as well, and doesn’t really care much about the Thief. He even admitted on a Twitch presentation that he hadn’t touched the Thief or it’s skills for 2 weeks and couldn’t remember much about the new changes.
Whereas the dev that was overlooking the Engineer was hands on and had working knowledge of Engys and genuinely seemed to have a love for the class.
Take that as you will, but don’t have any real expectations for the Thief. You’ll only be disappointed. When the one responsible doesn’t have any love or interest in the class, you will see the results in the finished product.
Edit: The only way you can really make a difference is vote with your wallet. If you buy gems, stop for a month. Yeah, it really won’t make much of a difference, but if you’re unhappy, why give them more money? That’s why I will never spend one dollar of real money in the gem store.

also, i refuse to buy expansion untill at least bugs are fixed and things we were promised (sup withdraw) are actually implemented; surely my 2 accnts won’t make much difference but at least it makes me feel better~

Only two things can get me to buy the expansion at this point:
1. Sparkling good elite spec – doubtful, more than likely we will get shafted with a melee staff and become squishy pole dancers.
2. Their challenging content being either the Underworld, Fissure of Woe, or Domain of Anguish. FoW is likely due to something (a map) that was datamined about a week ago. Though, I want to be able to solo it like I did back in GW1 (well, I did it with henchies/heroes… but yeah solo) and it has to be rewarding. Both of those they will more than likely fail, especially on the rewarding part. So far there isn’t anything worth solo’ing… :\
Can someone point me to what is the source of the whole Thief rifle speculation in the first place. Is it still just a character in a trailer that we a) assume to be a player character b) assume to be a medium armor class wielding a rifle c) assume to be a Thief.

Source of the rifle has been linked back to trailer videos and various “thief” NPCs – like a picture of the leader of Order of Whispers – holding a rifle.
Most are also going under the assumption that no two elite specs can share the same weapon. Though if you think about it, future elite specs definitely will have collisions, or a lack of a weapon in general (warriors first!) – unless they start release new weapon types.
So yeah you’re right.
Other class specs (namely guardian) has also been speculated through trailer videos, where it was seen just barely for a glimpse.

Idk, could be wrong but the picture of the thief with what looks like a staff could possibly not be a staff at all, maybe him going about while holding the rifle. Idk I could be wrong

New class mechanic:
Steal now “steals” (copies) the weapon of whom you stole it from. So if you stole it off of a ele with a staff, you get a staff with thief staff skills, stole a great sword you get great sword skills.
But something like that would only be implemented in year 2059, considering how many skills they would have to make.

Thief doesn’t need anything. The elite specialization functions as a separate class not a class upgrade. If they wanna make a sniper class out of the thief I’m sure they’ll give thief rifle. But based on the staff artwork and datamined kunai they want to make a ninja elite specialization for thief. So, in my opinion rifle doesn’t suit a ninja too well so we’re getting melee staff. Plenty of room in the future for a sniper elite specialization to be made for thief.

Because, yeah, a ninja/assassin is currently not how a thief is played at all. Or at least not one of it’s facets. And making it function more like a ninja opens up a whole new class…

Truth be told, the specs are nothing revolutionary so far… They’re essentially extensions of what’s existing. At least that’s my opinion.
Their intention (originally – cuz, ya’know, stuff changes all the time…) was to have elite specs fill a gap of a some sort. A rifle would fill a 1200 range gap. A staff (or a greatsword…) would (hopefully) fill a melee beefy stealth-less fighter.
But yeah, based on the data-mined stuff and from what we’ve seen so far, a melee staff is the most probable – as unfortunate as that is. So yeah most likely a squishy pole-dancer for us!
This entire guild represents what is currently wrong with the thief community. Banding together so you can 1 hit backstab people in WvW and Pvp. Its plain bug abuse.

purely speculative, you need a stronger opening argument. DaVinci has established the abandoning of an older version of software to an expanded / updated / new version of software …run with it. i win whether the white knights or black knights own the debate …i just want a clear win.
If they really wanted to test it they would replace eotm with new map for 24h.
And how many players would actually report bugs and glitches instead of just having fun on the new map?
How many players would be honest enough not to use possible exploits that haven’t been detected yet?
Giving all p(l)ayers access to the map might actually do more harm than good.
And how many players reporter bugs during a “closed beta”? How many off selected players will actually report bugs when they are picked off from a guy that streams for profits?
What exploits, what harm? Eotm doesnt count to wvw score, how it can harm anything? I see youre 100% pve guy if you dont even know basic informations about wvw.. and more people means higher chances to identify such exploits you talking about so that we wont see them on release.
Logic is stronk on these forums.

I was thinking about bugs that could cause champions to die instantly, or respawn instantly, infinite WXP farming or NPCs buying items for more than they should: bugs that would allow those who use them to enrich themselves.
You know… you, either of you, can’t really prove that either side (having non-vet players only, having vet players only, having mix) is better than the other.
The only thing certain is, that there will be some that do report bugs/glitches/exploits, there will be some that keep silent about it (for w/e reason), and there some that won’t even look for them…
Being eager to join the beta-tests, probably means you fall in the latter of those three.
Unless you’re going to do some mass-scale social in-game experiment… arguing about it is pretty kitten pointless.

I posted asking if there’s a chance that the skills will be balanced per-mode….
This is more talking about your build choices. Like if you choose utility skills in one game mode that’s different in another game mode, it will switch them automatically when you change. Like how traits do currently. If you are still confused, try going to Lions Arch, changing your traits, then enter WvW or sPvP. You will notice your traits being different (saved) in either of those game modes.
edit: further more, “balanced per mode” is a ridiculous idea. It should be the same in every mode and be balanced. Having it be different in different modes is what takes people out of these modes. They even specifically said they want to get rid of the split.
Yeah I get that, that they’re talking about having builds assigned per-mode… but it’s one step forward for them in realizing that maybe the 3 modes should be balanced separately.
I sit on the other side of the fence, and think that while it’s harder/requires more work to balance the 3 modes separately, I think it’s a more correct way to do it. I get where you’re coming from, for instance the reveal that’s different between the two modes can get a bit annoying to keep accounting for the 1 second difference but at the moment some nerfs that might be targeted more towards one game mode are shafting players in another…
That, or, announce that that they don’t care balancing builds in WvW and will only focus on sPvP and PvE (WvW still being lumped into PvE). Which is perfectly understandable since trying to balance 1v1’s to 1vX to NvM (where N>M) to 10v10 to 60v60 to players playing on toasters and kittening that it’s not balanced… is a tad bit hard. Plus considering how they’re constantly trying to be an eSport…. Though announcing something like this will kitten off the WvW crowd and make people quit…. So, it’s better for them to to announce it, but silently do it anyways. And that still goes back to how I said one group of players being shafted because of another… But at least at that point we would know that it’s a solid decision on their part, as a opposed to “oh they kittened up at balancing yet again”.

:/ I haven’t seen any of the elite spec trait lines, but I’m willing to bet that they’re specific to the weapon that they’re tied to. So, I doubt, elite specs will revive old weapons.

… no actual point to fighting with SB. I may use it to travel quicker or help blast a field pre fight, but the only reason to ever use it in a fight came to be for dropping a poison field, at which point I’d swap back …
What: Thief Why: The dps a thief puts out after patch is too much. I can’t even touch them in Spvp without getting killed in 2 seconds. The worst part is that im a gaurdian, yet they just proc my block and then daze + backstab me to death.

What does a known bug that will be fixed have anything to do with a comparison between killshot and backstab – both working as intended? That skill will get fixed by the way.
It is as they’re asking if the expansion is worth the $50 which in the end is really up for them to decide.
