i cant control my character. can u make your game so that when i press what i press, my character does what i imagine him doing?

Petricia, it’s fun to be snarky and all (I’ve done it too) but as I said above even skilled players struggle with this part of the interface when it lags intermittently for reasons beyond their control. All people are asking for is an option to manage the gliding a little differently because apart from some client lagging issues I mentioned in my post above (you might have missed it) there’s also the issue that people have different physical capabilities and it hurts no-one to allow them to customise the interface a little to improve their enjoyment of the game.

You shouldn’t need carrot on a stick for something you supposedly do for fun.

Whenever I hear this argument I can’t help wondering how true the proponent is to their convictions.. but besides that, in a game that’s about self-improvement, the carrot is a crucial part of the fun.

You could self improve by actually improving instead of watching some number go up.

And now I can’t help wondering if that strawman was intentional. Or if the entire absurdity of that statement was intentional.

Legendary weapons

That’s a really interesting point. So are you saying that some players posting here have demonstrated that the decision isn’t a good one because there might be some data Anet doesn’t have that would possibly change their decision and it comes from the very players that are arguing to keep Legendary development? I would love to see what this data is! I’m all for getting more Legendary weapons if Anet is so incompetent that average players have some data they have missed that is so pivotal to their decision.

The data is people that are voicing that they aren’t going to spend money on the game because of the decision.

So you’re saying … that Anet didn’t know or consider that this would make people upset and those people might stop spending money on the game, so it’s a bad decision to stop Legendary development? See, I think you’re wrong about that. I know Anet understands people would not like this decision. The first post from MO tells me so.

Well, clearly, the people you are arguing against really don’t care what you think, and they have no reason to give Anet the benefit of the doubt.

What is your endgame here?

What is your endgame here?

What is your endgame here?

That question was not rhetorical.

Ahoy, matey. You’ll not be getting a satisfactory answer there, methinks. Tis a carousel I’ve been on before.

While he is certainly no hero, accidental or otherwise, I do wonder what the plan there actually was. You only find out where Mordy is located latter in the story so….yeah, were they were just going carpet bomb everything? Even if they didn’t know he was different from Zhaitan and that cannons wouldn’t work to kill him permanently, trahearne mobilized the fleet to fly over enemy with only a vague target.

Mordy was just an excuse. Trehearne was really there for the oil.

Don’t hold the jump key? There is nothing to “fix” really. Yes it’s happened to me. But it just makes you focus more on what you are doing.

This standard response ignores that there are lag issues that affect both the opening AND closing of the glider. This may be related to living in Australia, at least in some cases. A number of times I’ve over-shot a tight landing spot because I’m tapping the key to close the glider and it doesn’t respond until a second later. I say this as a person who completed Troll’s Revenge and six other jumping puzzles every day for weeks, so I can objectively say I’m pretty focused on my jumping puzzles. And yet the glider catches me out regularly. This is a case of not playing the game but fighting the interface. People are justly asking for the option to disable or reassign the gliding key. It wouldn’t affect those who want it to work as-is. It would just help those of us where the glider isn’t as consistent as yours.

When will you casuals understand that Legendary armour is the same as Ascended. If legendary armour have increased stats then I can understand some of what you are saying. Stop feeling like you are entitled to the gear because you have played for years but don’t have time. Find a group or guild and start working on it as raids are not temporary content.

Should I be entitled to the PvP back because I have played since launch but find the meta boring or MM stupid? Should I be entitled to the new Legendary weapons because I don’t have the time to sit around for events? Should I be entitled to the FotM back because I hate swampland? Get of your lazy kitten and work for something instead of waiting for the gear to fall in your lap.

3 years of easy content and everything available for free has made the casuals more elitist then the actual elitist.

Isn’t it time we stopped peddling the “casuals vs hardcore” meme? It’s nonsensical and divisive. And just as there’s disagreement on what constitutes a casual, there’s even disagreement on whether legendary is equivalent to ascended. Some argue that the stat swapping makes legendary better. Maybe you should tackle that argument first.

Ok I will bite.

Ascended gear can be stat swapped as well. Sure the runes get removed but if you went from berserker legendary armour with scholar runes to viper you would keep the scholar runes? Of course not so either way you would have to change runes. The only cost will be through insignias and ectos. How often do you stat change that you can’t pay that?

That’s two replies I’ve had where people thought I was debating the equivalency of ascended/legendaries. Before anybody else goes down that track, please understand that I wasn’t debating it and I don’t care either way. I was pointing out that there’s disagreement on whether they’re equivalent just as there’s disagreement on what constitutes a casual, so dividing the player base into casuals and elitists is just arbitrary and divisive. We need to move past that. It’s a zero-information argument.

All of the arguments supporting this idiotic policy fail horribly. Why? Because the one thing gold sellers/spammers have more than anything else is TIME.

Time is the stupidest restriction because they have infinite time. They have armies of people who can make accounts, and then wait a week+ for the timer to go away.

Stolen credit card numbers, access to 10+ year old accounts, things like that are actually in short supply and are a far smarter way to gate such access.

But time?

All that does is screw people over during the most important time for possibly committing to an MMO: the BEGINNING – when people are most excited.

You blunt that excitement and you’ll either run people off, or at best deter them strongly from being able to recruit friends or family to the game.

Ultimately, this is an absolutely brain dead idea that does NOTHING to stop gold spammers/sellers who have armies of people making accounts EASILY waiting out the timer.

Only legitimate customers are hurt by this.

If your excitement is so easily blunted by having to wait for one feature of an mmo when there are many others you could (and should) be indulging in then maybe mmos are not for you.

Visuals – I honestly didn’t know that Colin had said something about visuals. I’m not being rude, but can you link me to a post? I’d like to follow up and get that information, but it would be marvelous if I had a post or a blog entry where those statements were made. Makes it “fast and easy” to then pursue an answer.

It’s been linked in this thread a few times, it’s been linked in the Visual nerf thread a few times, and it’s been linked in Just a flesh wound’s Reddit thread. I have it bookmarked.

Hi Gaile, any news on the visuals question..?

I have followed up, but I don’t have any information yet. Remember that, as Mike O’Brien reiterated recently, we’re are not going to be making a lot of predictive statements. Nor do we want to give dates. Now, I notice that that sort of was a predictive statement made a few weeks ago. But what I’m saying is that while I’ll see if there’s more information to share, this may be a situation where, if changes are made, they roll out without prior announcement.

I guess at this time the most I could say is that this is a known request.

Just for my clarification, which part is the ‘known request’?

A basic question about map accessibility… Log in any time of day – what is the likelihood 75% or more of the HOT wps are locked? This isn’t a question about being a better player, or do I want to participate in the meta, it’s just – hey can I go to an area I’ve been to before? Can I enjoy all of this amazing map? 50% of the map? No not really. I don’t think its fair to say map locking = more challenging content. It just means that for the slice of the day I want to chill out and have some fun I will go some where else. Thank you for starting this thread.

this was not intended to be a dialogue about communication.

I hate to be that guy but… from your original post here….

This thread is intended to allow the continued discussion of communications

It seems to me now that you might have meant this as a discussion between players not between players and anet – but that is exactly the point minbariguy is making. This thread comes across, unintentionally or not, as a fly-trap. This is not only unnecessary but frustrating for players. There has been sufficient discussion between players on the subject of communication. Players are seeking discussion with anet. I just think we have a chance here to make this thread about communication actually mean something. Or if not this thread, then maybe another which explicitly states that it is a discussion between anet and players.

I specifically entitled it “Comments about Communications.” I’m sorry if it appeared this was an offer to have a conversation for that was not at all what I meant. I was, as JaFW mentioned, separating a messy thread into two:

  1. One to house dev posts brought over from reddit
  2. Another to house forum member input on the subject of communications

I will be happy to amend my initial post to make that clearer. Thanks for pointing that out.

I know there are a lot of comments that basically say “Tell us more” or “Tell us sooner.” I think that the AMA went a long way towards telling more and explaining how some things are subjects we’ll not be willing to talk about in advance. If you’d like to see more of those sorts of conversations (like the AMA) let us know that. But as Mike said, there are some things we won’t be saying and I hope everyone will understand that fact, and even why that’s the case.

Thank you, Gaile. Now back on topic, here is my comment on communications: there is one question I think that needs answering and it’s a simple one that’ll potentially do a lot for customer satisfaction in the player base.

From what I’ve read, Colin promised the return of SAB and the return of our original visuals and aurus, as well as settings to let players control the quality of the visuals. The question is whether these promises will still be upheld in his absence? This is not an enquiry about release dates or exact plans. All that’s required is a simple Yes or No confirmation. Were Colin’s promises official policy or just talking out of his hat?

There’s a lot of communication here.

It hasn’t escaped my attention either that the only red posts are from Gaile when she started this thread.

…. Ayrilana, while it’s true that in the forums as a whole there’s communication, it’s the very definition of the word ‘ironic’ that in this thread which is specifically about communication the only thing you don’t find is…..

Moving on.

There’s a lot of communication here. It’s just that it doesn’t always entail what people want to hear (e.g. Release dates, what’s being worked on, etc) which Anet has stated numerous times that they do not provide those details until it’s nearly completed.

There are plenty of other things people would like to hear, such as whether Colin’s promises on the visual nerfs and SAB are going to be upheld. This doesn’t require a release date, just a “Yes”.

Pressing button keybound to Look Behind. I would suggest rearview mirror in mid of right side, so I will be calmy aware of what is behind me. QoL change definitely.

OMG. I love a rearview mirror. And.. don’t hate me for this.. but it opens the field for all kinds of mirror-dangling minis. Instead of dice, imagine a pair of quaggans swinging from your rear-view.

Secondly more than one minimap, so I would have my waypoints pretty close at hand instead M.

Agree this needs something. I’d personally like a favourites list for waypoints I visit frequently, for things like events (Swamplost for SB for example) or jumping puzzles. It doesn’t add any enjoyment (at least for me) to keep zooming in and out of the map to find the same waypoints, and takes up time that could be spent playing.

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Well I do not want Anet to use more important dev-time to fix something that isn’t very gamebreaking, there are some stuff that is worse than this.

No offense to you, but I hate this argument with a vengeance. I’ve said so on several threads. Of course there’s stuff worse than this. Whatever somebody considers worth doing, there’s somebody else who thinks there’s something more important. Can we just stop with this argument already? It’s completely useless… just like minor/major sigils when you’ve reached 80.

I have leveled up 12 characters from 1-80 and when I have I have always got them Major sigilis and runes just becouse what you said, they are so cheap. They are not the best but they are good enough for leveling.

And what then? What do you do with the dozens and dozens of sigils and runes you get after you’ve levelled to 80? That’s the point of the thread.

If on an instance or a meta event, if you prepared I don’t think you will fill your bags that fast. Do not salvage stuff if you don’t have to, wait until you are at a merchant.

That’s generally good advise – salvage after. But that’s not the point of the post. Whenever you salvage, the point is there’s a kitten-ton of useless sigils and runes produced. I’d also like to be able to sell these with the click of a button. To add my suggestion to the pile, how about a combo box where you choose a quality level (e.g. “superior”) and all rules/sigils below that quality level get sold when you click Sell Junk. If you want some specific ones back, you’ve always got the merchant’s rollback screen.

1. I don’t feel that that argument is useless, just as people are saying that this is the most important fix in the game I wanna be able to say that yes it is a thing that needs a fix but I rather have Anet Devs putting their devtime on something else as it is not that of an big issue to me. If I where to be silent about this and everyone who wants this fix are vocal, I dunno how it works but maby then Anet thinks that this may be a top priority and fix it while I sit silent in my corner and wish that they did something else.

2. When (now rather) I mostly sell the runes and sigils but a while back I did toss them in the MF. It has never been a big problem for me, if they happen to take up some bagspace I needed they are the first stuff I throw away (If I dont have stuff that have a lower selling value).

3. The point of the post was that the ammount of min and maj runes and sigils are stupid and that they are worthless and takes up alot bag space and more so that there should be a fix to this. I think that my point works very well with this post as this is a suggestion to what OP (and others) can do while waiting for a fix to this. Anyhow I like your idéa.

It’s not so much the bag space (and they’re not worthless – they’re a source of income, however slight) as the number of clicks to get rid of them all, I think. Whether you sell them at a merchant, throw them in the MF or sell them on the TP, it’s a lot of clicks – especially if you’re selling each one on the TP! People have complained about the number of clicks in the game and anet have recognised it’s an issue since they put in the Consume All options on luck. And if they consider those worthy of implementation, it might be time to address this. Actually, I think this is more annoying than the issue with luck. At least with luck, you could hold your mouse in one place and quickly click through the luck, and people even had double-clicker macros for it. With the sigils/runes, you have to keep moving your mouse to each one and double-clicking (when selling to a merchant for example). It would be nice to get this particular issue sorted out in between expansions.

Heart of Thorns Maps Complexity

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Zoltar MacRoth.7146

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

The main frustration in the jungle maps, at least for me, comes from the invisible walls and inconsistent slippery slopes. You can never tell by looking (only by trial and error) if the slope of a branch will let you stand on it or send you falling, but at least that’s something plausible in a jungle environment and can be learned with time.

But the invisible walls. Kittens! It’s immersion breaking and it’s some of the laziest collision design I’ve ever seen. Time and again I’m jumping along some branches that look designed for jumping on, or running between the roots of trees where the holes are large enough to allow buses, and I run into invisible walls. I can’t stress this enough – the visuals should match their collision shapes. If you don’t want players walking through that massive hole, put something there to make it visible obstructed. If you don’t want players climbing that ledge, raise the ledge so it’s clearly not climbable. This was a problem with the classic game and it’s still a problem in HOT. It’s too late for these, but I just hope a little more consideration is given to this in future expansions/episodes.

Central Tyria's Enemy Density

So the increase-enemy-density thing is the meme of the week? Several people seem to be spouting threads about it now.

So why can’t raiders have their fancy skins and bragging rights, and everyone else can have theirs, too? I really don’t get it!

Your thoughtful question inspired me to revisit the original post……

Now I’m just kittened that I’m denied access because I can’t go full neckbeard status for pve in a game I was told I wouldn’t have to raid in to get the best gear.

It appears that the OP is agitated that his present family priorities impede his ability to aquire those fancy skins and/or bragging rights that he wants in the short term.
He also called raiders “neckbeards”. As someone with a beard and a neck I choose to see that as a compliment on their behalf.

It also appears that pixelated women are somehow involved. Possibly, anet nerfed the visuals of his women, causing further agitation. The state of their auras is unknown.

It would seem logical that given sufficient time and patience, the family circumstances will change and an opportunity will arise to engage in “raiding” and acquire the desired armours. I subscribe to this view myself, owing to my own limiting circumstances, and I look forward to trying raiding in several years, by which time one more wing will hopefully be released.

It would be easy to assume that the OP’s impatience to get the flashy skins stems from a feeling of “entitlement” which is a common and contagious flu-like malady in the MMO community. However, it should be remembered that the asteroid Apophis will impact with the Earth in 2029 and it is my belief that the OP is justified in accelerating his acquisition targets to meet this deadline and look spiffing when the world ends.

Unhelpful allies in personal story

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Apologies if this has been raised before.

Throughout the personal stories, I’ve experienced allies kitten you when you’re down (Braham, bless you) and allies who just stand by stoney-faced (all of DE). This might explain my lack of giving a kitten when a certain someone got—-uh, but I digress.

I was reminded of this recently when doing the personal story episode “Convincing the Unfaithful” (Order of Whispers mission), where you’re escorting some frogs and protecting them from bandits. Your sidekicks on this mission are Tybalt and some frog whose name I can’t remember.

The bandits proved formidable with their cannons and I was downed a few times in completing this mission. Neither of my allies came to my rescue. Fair enough. The Order of Whispers doesn’t tolerate slackers. I get that, even as I lay at the feet of the frog ally crying, “Why won’t you help? I’m right here. Why…?”

But it was adding insult to injury that the frog ally wasn’t even bothered fighting the bandits to protect his own kin. As I lay dead at his feet, he stood by and let the bandits walk right past him. I swear one of them slipped him a $20. I guess that explains it.

Sometimes you don’t have to be risen to be corrupted.

The “entitlement” argument is ridiculous.

It’s actually not, because that’s exactly what you call people who don’t respect the rules and mechanics of the game that they think they should always win which leads them to believe it should be changed so they can win it.

Not sure if people realize this but … you don’t always win games, even ones you pay to get access to.

I don’t recall Anet EVER saying you won’t have to raid to get BiS gear.

I don’ recall ever seeing Idaho, which doesn’t change the fact that it exists.

OK let me rephrase then: Anet never said that to players.

Raids are dungeons/dungeons are raids; It’s just a label. You ALWAYS needed to do them to get BiS gear.

This is a falsehood. A complete fabrication. It would be accurate if you exchanged the word ALWAYS with NEVER. I really hope that claim represents ignorance of the facts on your part rather than intentional dishonesty.

Oh I get it … you’re one of those people that argue the details and miss the meaning.

That might be because that one little detail changes the entire meaning. One might even say the meaning is in the details. Or the devil. Or the six gods or something.

[Suggestion]Fix to Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zoltar MacRoth.7146

A couple of months ago I felt very differently about masteries and would have agreed with most of your points, but the system has grown on me. I’ve come to understand it, accepted its limitations and invested in it. Here are my thoughts:

2. Take away the geography restriction. Just let us earn experience for masteries anywhere.

I think a partial relaxation on the geographical restrictions is warranted. Gliding is available everywhere – it makes sense for this to be trainable everywhere. But poison lore, bouncing mushrooms and wallows are specific to the jungle; it makes sense to train them there. Ultimately, the geographical restriction was instituted to draw people into the new zones and perhaps in time, as they become old-hat and new content arrives, the geographical restriction might become superfluous to some degree.

3. Go back to something like the old skill system. You earn mastery points by filling experience bar. After a few points filled, unlock mastery.

While collecting some mps has been ..challenging there’s a satisfaction to seeing that mastery point pop up in the bottom-right corner of your screen. It feels earned. Not sure how I feel about your proposal exactly. I suspect I’m too biased to like it, given that I’ve already put so much effort into completing all the tasks to get the points.

Start adding more masteries.

Oh, yes. Can’t wait for more masteries. People have suggested some fun ideas for masteries in these forums. The possibilities…

For example a mastery that grants 2% experience boost to account. One that adds 2% gold find. Maybe one that grants 5% passive run speed in PvE.

The trick to masteries will be finding a balance between providing QoL features and adding game changing mechanics. The 2% gold find upgrade is probably on the QoL side, but the speed one might have gameplay consequences. If speed is available via a mastery, players could dispense with runes or traits for speed and use those for something else.

Add some pvp and wvw masteries as well – would also be nice to allow those players to advance masteries.

It’s time for WvW to get the autoloot functionality. You get used to it in PvE and it’s a real disconnect when you go into WvW and miss out on loot because you’re not used to pressing the pick-up-loot key anymore.

Most of the mastery rewards aren’t that big of a deal. If that’s the case then why are there so many obstacles?

They kind of are a big deal. They’re account wide, which means all your toons get the benefit of something that only one of them technically has to work at. Gliding is certainly a massive deal. It’s revolutionised exploration and jumping puzzles. Though some of the things you have to do to get mastery points can be frustrating, it really pales into insignificance when you realise you only have to do it once.. for all your characters.

As for the mastery number next to our name/level? Make that apply just to the actual earned points from achievements so people can still have something to show off and not just a number that endlessly gets larger.

I’m not sure what you mean there. As you collect points from achievements, doesn’t that number also get endlessly larger?

Give option to show both weapon sets.

So… how would something like dual swords + dual pistols work, exactly? Or even a greatsword + staff both stuck to your back? Or are you then forced to never “put away” the active weapon set?

I don’t know that I like this. Unless ANet changes where everything is kept. So daggers are stuck across your chest, pistols holstered lower down the leg so they don’t interfere with swords… wait, no, still not liking it.

I’d like to think such a change would be optional. Nobody should be forced to display multiple weapon sets.

I would be interested in trying a Tengu toon. Their Aztec-like architecture is intriguing. I’ve always wondered what goes on behind those massive walls. Heck, if a future expansion just let us in there, even without making the Tengu playable I’d be happy.

Will we ever get our auras back?

There has been an awful lot of conversation invested in exactly this topic in the Visual Nerfs thread but maybe you’re right to start a new thread. It might be easier for anet to comment on it if we start afresh. Colin did apparently say that the visuals would be restored (in april?) and some options provided for adjusting them. But with him gone, it’s not yet been confirmed if his promises will be upheld. We live in hope.

Back on the subject of mounts.. I’d like to be one. I’d like to transform into a dolyak and give people rides around major cities. Don’t know how to get to a vista? Hop on and I’ll take you there. Tired of running around Black Citadel trying to find everything? Sit back. Relax. Enjoy the tour. Donations welcome. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Good day fellow Tyrians,
Anything written in this post is completely and solely based on my opinion.

- I found that getting around the world was far too quick and far too easy, especially in the late-game.
- Loading screens between zones

For me, this ruins immersion. It makes me feel as though I’m trapped in an enclosed area, like an animal in captivity.
Although we use these subconsciously at this point, teleporting around via Waypoints makes the player miss a lot of content; skipping a potentially interesting/exciting/profitable journey, not to mention the beautiful scenery this game has to offer.

My Proposal:

- Drastically reduce the amount of Waypoints available in each zone
- Greatly increase the price of using said Waypoints

I have a counter-proposal. One which does not require anet to do any extra development, doesn’t affect anyone else’s enjoyment of the game yet provides you with the immersion you seek. I think you’ll like it. Here it is:

You should walk everywhere and never use waypoints ever again.

Enjoy!
