Helping others seems to be a no-no in HOT

I remember a recent update which stated that ressing people would now count towards an event? Well, the HOT metas don’t seem to have got the memo. I was in DS yesterday and I started ressing a few people who had been downed, as a break from the monotonous fighting and because I was feeling a sense of community with my fellow man. I wanted them to enjoy their DS experience just as I was enjoying playing battlefield medic. (I even have a title for that!) But as I was basking in the glow of numerous "ty"s the game politely told me that due to my inactivity, I was no longer part of the event!
Now, you may argue that ressing instead of fighting is letting down the team. Those lazy kittens who can’t be bothered to not get hit should just wp and run back. Who can really say in this crazy topsy-turvy world? But it’s clear that helping others in the HOT zones is not encouraged by the powers-that-be. One might say it’s not a case of “play as you like” so much as a case of “play by fighting and stomping on the faces of the fallen!”
So if I ignore your desperate please for help I hope you’ll forgi—-oh, what am I saying! I can’t ignore you, random player! Let me rub that hurt away and kitten the event!!
It may be useful to read the wiki first. There’s a lot of information in there and you can jump around from topic to topic as you need. Then if something’s not clear, this forum can help explain it.
This subject has come up before and will again because a new mechanic (gliding) was welded onto an existing mechanic (jumping) without giving a diverse playerbase any say in it. (Why does that sound familiar?) The advice of “just don’t hold down your jump key” is technically correct but misses the point. As posters in other threads have pointed out, people have different reaction times and different lag experiences. Previously, the system worked well enough to accommodate these. Now it doesn’t. As I explained in one of the other posts, I – like many – come from a background of playing games where it does matter how long you hold down the jump key. I’m used to timing jumps this way across all games and gw2 didn’t object to this before. Now it does. All that people are asking for in threads like these is the option to split the jump/glide keys. Even the best of us won’t always tap the jump key fast enough even if we try. We’re fighting the interface here instead of enjoying the game and until that’s fixed these posts are going to keep appearing.
If it was mine to do over, I would have skipped on the MPs, and had some of the Masteries set up so that story goals gave you the first level of it, with later levels needing to be earned. Finish the first part of the story? Scout should hand you a glider, unlocking Gliding Basics. Saved the froggies? “Here, let me show you how to use this mushroom to get up to our village.” Helped the Exalted? They give you a book to help translate their writings into something you can understand. And so on.
Exactly what people, including myself, were saying soon after HOT release. The masteries are too divorced from what they represent. But it is what it is. All you can do is knuckle down and complete them… if you want. We can only hope future masteries have a little more connection to the world.
I’ve been playing Outside for 24 hours a day for as long as I can remember. I think I might be addicted. Sometimes I play so long I fall asleep before I can find a safe place to park my toon and that’s not good – you can wake up to find somebody has hacked your account and stolen your outfit and currencies. One time I woke up and found my toon parked beside another player’s toon. Apparently we had been playing together the night before and working towards the 10,000 drinks achievement. Somehow our armour pieces had come off but fortunately we found them in the vicinity. I wanted to add her to my friends list but she said she was moving to another server and wouldn’t be able to play with me again. She did whisper me later and rant about some condition I’d given her called [pregnancy]. Apparently my boon duration wasn’t as long as I thought and my [Protection] had run out at some point.

Triangular glider with giant eye design. Illuminati confirmed!
So, we have this thread, Comments about Communications that has been opened for us to post communication concerns in.
Oh, I forgot about that thread. Looks like it hasn’t had muchactivity lately.
Maybe we should ask in that thread if colin’s statement will be upheld? We might be more likely to get an answer than here.

Giant hands. Like those inflatable hands at sports games. Giant gliding hands.
A moment’s frustration should not be the basis for a game changing proposition.
Perhaps you misread my comment to say disable all NPCs as I fail to see the game changing nature of stopping the various npcs hogging space at the bank, or a bear shaman thinking I want to talk while using the MF.
No, it’s not a misinterpretation so much as it is an understanding in world design. Fewer characters rapidly makes cities look empty.
[Where’s the line? How many moments does it take to qualify? And who decides?
As the OP points out, these npcs don’t add anything to the game experience. At best, they are ineffective. At worst.. well, they’re downright annoying. One-line automatons don’t make for a living world, be they wandering or not. More violets, anyone?]
Aesthetics is everything. <3
What does that even mean…??
Agreed. Sometimes it’s fun to help your guildies decorate the guild hall, and sometimes you just want a place of your own, where you can decorate things your way, where you can put your trophies to show what you personally have accomplished. Sure, you could grab a corner of the guild hall but using guild decorations for your own purpose just doesn’t feel right. I like the idea of a scribe craft for just decorating the home instance. The existing scribe system could be re-used and many of the same decorations could be available, but cheaper and limited to use in the home instance.
I agree with you. HoT needs a nerf. It is now “old content” and a large number of skill points are guarded by champions likely built to be killed by 3 players in full zark.
“Old content”…?
What a fast paced world we live in.

Gaile – for as long as I’ve been on these forums, I’ve seen anet preferring reddit and ignoring their own forums for various reasons, including the apparent ease of using reddit and various forum bugs here due to, as I understand it, this forum being developed by a third party that no longer supports it. For the longest time, the argument has been these forums vs Reddit.
But what if there’s a third option we’re overlooking? Why not get a new forum engine (there are plenty of free ones around) and make that the new official forum? Find an engine that suits the developers needs. Find an engine that allows for AMAs. Find an engine with proper search facilities and with regular updates from its developers.
Then this forum would be made read-only, still accessible for posterity but no need content added. Any response to threads on here would have to start by creating the thread on the new forum and linking the first post back to the original thread in here. The developers would do all their communication here and, if they want, they can still provide links to this on reddit.
Yes, in the short term there will be some extra work as threads start to build up here and information has to be cross-referenced. But it’s also a chance for a fresh start. A chance to build a new community where both devs and players are on the same page, and site.
Someone’s bound to argue that this would make it impossible to search the (new) forum for past threads – but that’s impossible anyway given the broken search engine here. And it may even be possible, depending on the storage format of this forum and the new one, to translate posts from one to the other – so no reference is required to the old forum and all its previously unsearchable posts may become searchable.
Just a thought. It doesn’t have to be a dichotomy.
Strange forum issues this morning. My reply to another post was put here. Maybe I just had a crazy moment. Deleted that one and replaced with what I was trying to say:
So Colin is apparently leaving? All the best to him …..but I can’t help wondering how this will affect the visual nerfs issue. Who’s going to ensure that what he said gets carried through?

Putting aside the debate whether it’s pvp or not (and it is by definition) if you want my honest opinion I wouldn’t want to be either the hunters nor the prey in this scenario, especially not the prey. I don’t enjoy pvp as it is and being defenceless against multiple players while also having to keep moving because a lava font will spawn under me sounds like a personalised hell for pve enthusiasts.
At least you’ve got a chair. So you can sit and watch the hedge(s). :/

There’s already been some balancing, if I recall, and some of their skills have been reduced. I don’t think the profession is going to give you a big advantage which seems to be what you’re getting at. And from what I understand, their underwater skills are more limited than other professions. Just go with whatever you like.
This feels like a discussion you’ve raised again and again. And each one befuddles me with math. As a simple minded individual, what single-line soundbite can I take from this?
+1 for the awesome title. I think I read about the action camera option via this forum. If I hadn’t I probably would have also struggled to find it.
The comments are all correct. However I am interest in the “best” weapon in terms of base weapon statistics (kill power) regardless of class and specialization.
There’s a number of problems with this question. I’ll address one: you can’t disregard class and specialisation. No single weapon can be used by all classes. If you were to ask “What is the best gun in terms of kill power regardless of class” how am I to answer you if my ele can’t use a gun? The question doesn’t make sense in the way it’s phrased.
4) the Devs FREAKING turn off the lights for 12 hours a day! That’s a load of crock.
Don’t worry. In the next update they’re going to reverse those visual nerfs and make them optional.
What gets me is the jumping puzzles. Many of them are unfinished. You start climbing up some protrusions that seem like they’re made for jumping and they go nowhere! And then the police guild start chasing you because apparently you’re not supposed to climb the bank jp. And don’t get me started on the fall damage. It’s ridiculous. I got 5000 stacks of [broken leg] once.
I have a question about emotes. When you do one, it seems other people can see it in chat. Is this related at all to which chat mode you’re in – I mean, if you’re in a whisper to someone can people around you see your emote text?
I ask because I’d like more emotes and would use them often, but I don’t need people halfway across the map knowing that I’m sitting or roaring or yawning.
This game is glitchy as kitten. I was working towards the 10,000 drinks achievement but after consuming 15 my screen went black for ages. Devs! Pls fix!!
As an aside, I find the naming “Astralaria” annoying. I live in Australia and every time I see this name it catches my eye because I subconsciously think it’s something relevant to my region. Not asking for it to be changed, of course. It’s just annoying. Hopefully, future legenderies won’t have annoying names like Europenia or Unitedstatesia.
The recent news that the effects are coming back – and will be optional – makes me ..cautiously optimistic. It certainly seems to have placated this thread into silence.
And yet.. I can’t help feeling like this thread really deserves two things before it feels like there’s closure:
i) we need to see the proof of the pudding, so to speak. We need to see what the effects look like once they’re “restored” and we need to see what options are available. There have been no end of rational, useful ideas presented here. Will the visual options be comprehensive, or merely a check box that toggles between “original” and “nerfed” states? This will say a lot about whether real future-planning has gone into the visual effects system, or if this is a knee-jerk reaction to placate the playerbase.
ii) there needs to be an official response here. It needs to be here. And it needs to confirm anet’s commitment to Colin’s statement: that any future visual adjustments will be provided as options via this new visual options system they’re developing, rather than globally enforced. There needs to be some indication that a lesson has been learned here, that progress has been made, that a thread like this will never ever have to happen again, at least on the subject of visual adjustments. There will always be areas of the game where developers and players butt heads, have lengthy discussions and come to some middle-ground. The game will continue to evolve and there will be hiccups. That’s normal. But let it not be on this one subject. Let this particular subject be concluded here. Let this be an achievement we’ve all reached after a long journey. That would be closure.
I’m not trying to poo-poo your idea, because it does sound intriguing, but you must know that the different map currencies, especially in the HOT maps, were specifically made that way to keep people playing all the maps. “Restricting players to specific maps” is exactly the point. But even so, they did cave in a little by creating the converter you get from finishing DS which allows limited conversion between the currencies, time-gated of course.
For awhile now when we are killed there is a thing called “Fight to Survive”, this is also in PVP and WVW, however these skills are really a big disappointment, they don’t work properly, first of all when you are down shouldn’t you be trying to heal, instead the attack is active and there is no heal, next the main one that will heal you the most recharges really slow, this system really needs to be thought out and revamped, it is possibly the most disappointing thing in the game, when you are downed just be killed, get rid of the “fight to survive”, because it doesn’t work.
It does work and adds a satisfying extra mini-game, if you will, to the experience. Rather than dying immediately, you’re presented with options which – if you choose correctly – could save your life. It’s a fantastic concept. But like anything else in the game, it only works if you know how to use it. And like anything else, if you don’t know how to use it, it can seem frustrating and pointless. I suspect that’s the issue here.
There are four options: a basic attack, a stronger attack I think, an interruption and a heal. It’s been a while since I had a sub-80 character but I think you have to unlock the various skills as you level, so maybe that’s another reason you don’t see the heal skill?
When you’re downed, the most obvious tactic (provided you have all the skills unlocked) would seem to be the heal. But as you noticed, it can be slow. It may, in fact, be more effective to attack, especially if your foe is weaker or more injured than you.
And that’s the most exciting part of it: when you’re downed and some critter is charging in for the kill; you attack them and they die at your feet, rallying you. Or in pvp you’re downed and so is your enemy and you’re both attacking each other, seeing who can kill the other first. I’ve been in this situation before and won out with only a sliver of health left. There is nothing more thrilling than this.
As an ele, I also have access to a lava font that appears under me when I’m downed. It’s a beautiful thing to get downed by some beastie only to have your lava font appear and kill it as it tries to attack you, rallying you back. Haha! There’s nothing like running through the jungle as a glass cannon elementalist, living by your wits, getting downed and – with a combination of lava font and the right choices – rallying back, getting downed, rallying back, getting downed, …. this is life on the edge, and it’s fantastic.
Not sure if I am the first to do this and it is not important to me
….says the person with the sig of “5th person worldwide to reach 30,000 achievement points. Currently bearer of 101 titles (excluding “No Title”).”
Not important, huh?
Well, good for you. No need to be modest. That’s your thing and it’s impressive. Congrats on finishing all those collections.
They’re extinct but very much revered many-generations removed ancestors of the Charr. You see, once upon a time a lion and a human happened to find themselves at the loose end of a sunday night with nothing much to do and… the rest is history.
If the next expansion takes us underground into Primordius territory it would make sense to have some areas of darkness and while these could be perfectly navigateable with torches or what not, a mastery as suggested by Just a Flesh Wound would be very cool. Perhaps you could also buy or craft floating light orbs that follow you if you don’t want to get the vision mastery.
9. Which map do you avoid whenever humanly possible?
Dragon’s Stand. Long meta is zzz after repeated playthroughs.
This ^
It’s just an onerously long and tedious road-trip through a drab green hell with indistinguishable monsters, repetitive combat and a mediocre ending. Just my opinion. Your results may differ. Consult your doctor if pain persists.
EDIT: Oh, and it’s followed by a very brief lull during which you rush about madly trying to explore the place before the DEAD dragon throws you out of his domain.
(edited by Zoltar MacRoth.7146)
The 8 for living story is doing all the achievements for each chapter. Some of which you can’t get unless you redo that chapter from scratch if you weren’t aware of them when you did the chapter initially.
I can’t get anybody to do the Skritt Queen, everyone who shows up just want the rich quartz node. Plus it’s only open 10 minutes every hour.
Also, some of the LS2 achievements are mutually exclusive so multiple repeats are required, and you can’t skip the tedious cutscenes.
Again, if they choose not, that’s fine, you are for sure correct. Look at the NPE changes because people couldn’t figure out this game mechanics. These are the people that Anet seems to cater to in this game. They are the same ones that may not be able to figure out UI customization depending on the difficulty. Just because it’s something you or I could breeze through, doesn’t mean everyone who plays could. Hence, if everyone cant figure it out, then those who can may get an advantage. So, if you can’t recognize that, then there is no point in further discussing this.
Other games…
Click options…
Click edit UI…
Move things where you want them…
Resize individual boxes to what you like…
Click save…
This is not rocket science. You don’t need to have a degree in programming to do it.
Currently we can only resize things, not move them.
Actually designing a customizable UI is a crap ton of work. Don’t undersell it.
It is indeed. I’d be happy if they just allowed the dailies window to resize like the chat already does.
Yes, there are still groups doing the old content.
A razor sharp wit. Knocks ’em dead every time.
@flog – the trouble with that argument is, no matter what you consider important, someone else will say to you that there are more important things.
Very true, but in a medium where people ask for things and sometimes, rarely, the developers actually listen it’s important to ensure the developers get an accurate picture of views and so those that disagree have a reason to say so.
Indeed. Everyone should have their say. I’m just saying that the “more important things” argument is pointless. The devs aren’t going to get anything out of it. There’s no data in it. /shrug
@zoltar MacRoth Yeah fair point but I still stand by my point and I agree 100% with theerantventure. I consider that simplicity is the optimal choice and you can already move stuff to your liking. Changing too much just alienates people in general. And this happens with any UI of any program whatsoever: sometimes the designers propose new solutions that end up being worse than the UI previous version
We can move some stuff, true, but we could use the option to move/hide more, for example to hide things like the ESL banner if we’re not interested in ESL. Anet don’t have to change the UI. They just have to allow us to. For example, the chat window can be resized, but the dailies/achievements window can’t (afaik). I’d like a bigger achievements window. Not asking anet to change it’s size, just to make it resizable.
Oops. This was supposed to be in the main forum. Sry.
Does anyone remember playing the predator in the AVP games? Remember how it had that helmet with different vision modes, some better at seeing the aliens, some better for marines? I was remembering this, and other games that involved vision modes, and came up with these funny concepts.
(No, I don’t expect it to be put in. Keep your pants on. I know you think there are more important things and there are. I present this for your, and my, amusement. Intended for open world. Not pvp.)
So imagine a mastery with lines that give you various powers, none of them game-breaking but each delivering some advantage (and disadvantage):
Anybody have any other fun vision concepts to share?

Maybe tangential but these “adventures” should rightly be called “activities”, at the very least, to match the very similar mini-games in LA. The term “adventure” suggests something very different from what they actually offer.
Mounts have already saved the game. There was an epic battle between gw1 and gw2. Sadly, the records have been lost. The mounts saved Tyria but died in the process, sacrificing themselves so that we may live. That’s why there are no mounts anymore. May they live forever in our hearts.
How about instead of any account wide map unlocks, if one has removed the smudges on the map, those become grayed out but detailed for all your alts. Thus making map comp so much easier. Everyone would still have to do map comp on each new character, BUT they wouldn’t be doing it blind anymore.
Or… have screenies of all the maps with route detailed out open on your 2nd monitor and run thru the maps in a wiz!! lol
Second monitor?! EXPLOIT!!!!!

I’ve thought that too, as it’s always so hard to work out which areas of the map are smudged due to not being discovered or smudged due to ..art?
But then again.. I really enjoy that feeling when you enter an undiscovered area and it reveals. So, I don’t know. Undecided.
Or maybe… keep the areas smudged but on the alts show the locations of all the poi/vista/hps so at least you know where you need to go and still retain that joy of discovery?
Well, basically, it’d be like a 100% cleared map with nothing discovered and gray-scale, only it’d color in the areas as you ‘discovered’ them. I’unno, I thought it’d be a pretty swell reward for getting map comp on one character.
Ah! So no smudging but gray-scale undiscovered and color discovered! I like!! Good one!
Actually, the general theme of this thread may be similar to the one below and possibly be a candidate for merging.

I discussed (okay, ranted) about this in another thread just recently. To cut a long story short, I don’t care whether or not anything was rewarded under the old system after level cap. I think something should be awarded under the new system and I don’t particularly care what that is. I still spend a lot of time in central tyria and I’m constantly seeing experience pop up when I kill things and then …go nowhere because I already have all my central masteries done. It’s unsatisfying. The idea of a mastery line that repeats, like the agent of entropy achievement, is a fine one. Either give us something for the extra xp or give us more masteries to put it to. Viva la Tyria!
Many of the mastery points require going through jumping puzzles. I hate jumping puzzles, also not very good at them. Some of the points I can’t get to no matter how many times I try. The same with hero points. A couple of HP’s in Verdant Brink are suppose to be soloable, but I can’t get to them, even though I saw others succeed. I fail every single time. I really, really hate jumping puzzles.
I’m the opposite. I love jumping puzzles and I actually wish there were far more mastery points available and set within jumping puzzles. Those of us who like them would be able to do more jps and ignore the rest. Those who hate jps could ignore jps and do the other points. Win-win for all. But I suppose the argument would be that some would do both jps and everything else and accrue way too many points. :/
I’m slowly doing all the LS2 achievements but it certainly isn’t fun for two simple reasons:
1. The cutscenes – every time we restart a stage (and often you’ll have to do a particular stage multiple times to get all the achievements because some will be mutually exclusive) we are forced to watch the same cutscenes. It’s tedious. Especially when one little mistake can forfeit the achievement and force you to do the stage again.
2. There’s no restart stage option – when you die there’s the option to I) return to checkpoint OR ii) exit. It would be helpful to be able to have the option to restart the entire stage (without having to watch the opening cutscene again) rather than having to exit, enter again, watch the cutscenes, etc. It would also be great if there was a way to bring up the return to checkpoint/restart stage/exit options inside the stage. They only come up when you die, so if you stuff up an achievement you have to let yourself die to start again. So tedious.
And, yes, I agree that there should be other sources for central tyrian mastery points. The silverwastes achievements and even TT are more enjoyable to do for points than LS2, at least for me. I’d rather work towards them in the open world with other people instead of being stuck in an instance by myself repeating the same tired story like some kind of hellish groundhog day.
I don’t want to put more examples
