Why Are Mesmer Phantasms Undodgeble?

in Mesmer

Posted by: data.4093

data.4093

lol phantasm mesmers have 20 second recharge? no, 12 seconds. Recharge doesn’t need to be reduced as phantasms are now.

TL;DR The equivalent of that for other classes would be:
Make all Pet summons in combat only.
Make all Elemental weapon/Kit Summons in combat Only.
Make Engineer Turret casts dodgeable,
Make Necromancer minion casts dodgeable.
Make Guardian Weapon Summon casts Dodgeable.
Make Ranger Pet summons and Spirit summons dodgeable

You guys can’t see the difference between these things and a ghost spitting unload every 6 seconds on a 12 second recharge? Really? Because minions/turrets/spirit weapons share the exact same recharge/damage/target summon as phantasms right? Yeah…

And then there are those of you saying “well this meta sucks for mesmers”, it sucks for a lot of things and yes mesmers took it in the face. If you take away the condition spam what’s going to happen?

And I’m not saying mesmers are perfect, broken, underpowered etc. I agree with OP that the cast should be dodgeable. Some of you seem to think Anet nerfs/buffs in linear patterns but that is never the case- one thing leads into another.

Either nerf or boon the Fear

Ok, We all know necromancers have several skills that cause Fear, and fear can be a dangerous status in sPvP and WvW combat. Necromancers are meant to have Fear. It is a good thing for them to have.

Then tell me why the highest amount of Fear that we can deal is 1 SECOND (or 1.5 seconds if they are within 600 with one skill while we are in DS) while the Thief can cause a 3 second fear with the stolen skull. Explain this to me please.

Either nerf the skull or increase the fear duration of Necro skills. A stolen skill should never be greater than one that is built in to a class.

Hahaha no. It’s fine the way it is, it works just like fear me which is a warrior skill. The thief’s steal mechanic is made to give them something valuable against that foe, usually their own mechanic. If I steal from a thief I get stealth, warriors give AOE DPS, mesmers give boons, rangers give regen/condi clear, necros- fear, eles give chill, guards- daze and engis give condis. Anet just buffed steal so thieves would use it, very few were using steal except as a gap closer or mug traiting.

Why should any class get unavoidable skills?

Left behind in what? There is nothing to spend that gold on other than vanity skins. All the best gear is/will only be obtainable by time-gated currencies and materials.

Yes ascended gear is obtained through means other than gold but Anet really went overboard. Lots of people probably thought nerfing cof p1 was going to bring about some deflation and stability but the gauntlet ruined that. We don’t know what is involved to craft ascended armor/weapons and many are already speculating ectos/t6 mats(ectos are up ~7s already) will go through the roof and be unreachable for newer players. Will Anet just release more content like this so new players can get lots of gold and then prices keep rising?

Risk/Skill versus Reward

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

data.4093

It is balanced

No risk = No reward
Risk = Fun, that is the reward

Let me let you in on a little secret, all the gold in Tyria isn’t going to make your character any stronger or you a better player. All those farmers in CS, FG, and the Pavilion are going to be sad little pandas when they do finally do complete their legendaries because making one is just 5 APs and nothing more.

GW1 player spotted. He’s right but some of you aren’t seeing why. Yes ascended armor/weapons may cost a ton of gold and give players a gear advantage in WvW(until everyone else gets it), but that twilight isn’t going to protect you from 100b or backstab. There are things worth more than gear or a legendary. If you want a certain look, go get it- I created an asuran guardian and I plan on putting the t3 cultural armor on him. Is it going to give him special abilities over other characters? no. Do I care? no. Giving super rewards for skill in combination with playtime will just lead players to perform those feats(especially pve ones) and promote new farming.

Anet has taken the WRONG approach to encouraging “group” play. Aggregating damage across the entire group to determine loot eligibility is ridiculous. If someone doesn’t feel like grouping for dynamic events..or wants to only group with a friend or two while not having to put up with idiots/rude comments from grouping with random people, they should not be screwed out of loot eligibility.

If Anet wants to encourage grouping, give people a MF bonus for every participating group member (say 5% for a total of 20%) or a chance for bonus loot, more xp/karma, etc.

Anet should be rewarding people for grouping, not punishing them for not grouping.

Ah but that’s how most games are, 1 boss means 1 party gets the loot. I believed Anet was totally against this but if this is their new approach then it seems they’ve had a major change of heart.

data.4093

I still remember casual pvp in GW1 and how easy it was to learn. At first you have no idea what’s going on but as you die and experience different builds/classes you start to put things together. You begin recognizing skills by the animation(instead of the other way around) after you’ve internalized them.

Think about it: tons of beginner players have no idea what thieves or mesmers do, they just scream “broken! NERF!” because they can’t match the animation to anything. Some noobs even think thieves are teleport hacking or mesmers are damage hacking- they have no way to discover what’s going on. So how the hell are you going to learn the game unless you play every class extensively? Who wants to do that? In a game where every class is unique and yet cast animations are sometimes generic or impossible to understand without playing that class, how can a player grow and enjoy the game? It’ll quickly become a frustration to many and they’ll leave PvP alone.

During a state of the game a dev(karl mclain) said he liked what the video is against. He thought it was extremely skillful for 2 rangers to fight then go back and forth until 1 popped troll unguent and the other ranger to rupt it. It sounded like he wanted an arcade style mmo. The obvious issue is that this isn’t an arcade where there’s set factors(1v1) and you telegraph moves(the attack chain) before doing them.

Some people will counter with “it’s more skillful this way because more factors = more skill”. This isn’t true, your mind can only keep track of so much and anything you can’t see is not something you can fight. Games with a handful of mechanics like FPS can require far more skill than a bunch of things you can’t see. Cast bars(remember those? we had them in gw1…) would be great but Anet isn’t into them this time around. Casting bars would encourage more skillful play and allow less experienced players to become better at a much faster pace. As the game stands now pvp is difficult against classes you have no experience playing yourself(and can still be difficult when you do).

They(the farmers) get rewards that complainers feel are “undeserved” and they vent on the forums trying to get Anet to show up as the shining angel of banhammerville. It’s so weird because all of you complaining should be farming too, that’s how games work! Intelligent farming and time spent yield greater rewards than casual running around.

A gate or option could lead people back to the former version. And we could even start rebuilding it through the living story.

They could have just said, hey, mind notifying people via map chat in future? But they went straight to the verbal abuse. Why should the OP want to play nice with that? Works both ways, you know?

Disruptions like this have been happening for a while so people get upset easily and are assuming he’s messing with them. The thing is, we don’t know the contents of the conversations- only OPs post.

It’s also common courtesy to say “troll up”. If I start an event that I know others want to participate in and keep them out of it then I’m being a d**k.

I should be telling them whenever I start a champ event. I tell them that they are inconveniencing me

See this? Don’t do this. All he has to say is “troll up”. People aren’t going to bash or praise him. They don’t care about him, they want the troll.

I care. I’d like everyone to enjoy this game without a group of kittenes shouting them down for not following their rules.

Earlier tonight I ran CoE p2. It took well over an hour and closer to 2 hours. The amount of times I can run CoFp1 in that same amount of time would be some where in the neighborhood of 10 to 15 times or more.

Even if CoFp1 speed runs were not a thing CoF is just a shorter dungeon, period. The fights aren’t as long, there aren’t as many of them, and they aren’t as annoying.

Also for my efforts in CoE I got a little silver and 66 dungeon tokens and like 6-10 blues and greens. In the same time doing CoF I could make 5-10 gold and several hundred dungeon tokens. Not to mention several full inventories full of loot.

What is killing dungeon variety?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: data.4093

data.4093

Anet is going to try and increase variety soon by removing gold from champions. It looks like a weak approach and I’d rather see them institute more dynamic gameplay to dungeons.

Anet could:

  • Introduce a system where player traffic affects loot tables. All dungeons start at 1.00 loot, the same as they are now. As more people play a dungeon (not taking paths into account as that is too complex to discuss here) the loot percentage decreases and affects chest drops. The people standing next to the dungeons can keep players up-to-date on percentages throughout the servers(tables would be uniform, JQ gets the same as DB etc). A simple example: COF is being farmed a lot and the drops are .30(30% of a normal chest rate) while AC is .50 and COE is 1.60. COE is far better than the other two so people will move there for better drops. The loot rate could affect tokens, mob drops, gold upon completion as well…If Anet did this I’d hope they use decent volatility in loot rates.
  • Introduce more boss-specific items. This is simple. Anet did this in GW1 and it led to the farming of dungeons all by itself.
  • Create dynamic dungeons. COE 3in1 was a fun dungeon. Using portal you were able to do all 3 paths in one go, bypassing the slow and boring beginning. The first time doing it I thought, “wow Anet did something right, this is actually fun” without realizing the glitches that went into it or how Anet would remove it. Anet could create a system allowing players to complete a path then move to another, bypassing some part of that next path just like COE 3in1.
  • Allow players to start multiple paths, make it akin to FOW and UW in GW1. This probably won’t work in some dungeons and won’t be implemented but it’d be fun to see different strategies/builds emerge if Anet did this.
  • Remove the uncontesting events. They’re useless with guesting available and don’t promote dungeon gameplay. If they provided a buff or item related to dungeons then they’d be useful.

What could Anet realistically do? We could have more diverse dungeons and instances which required actual roles but then what? It defeats the idea of “any class any role” and with the introduction of ascended armor it’ll make it even harder to fit those different roles. Do you have 3 sets of ascended trinkets on every character? Because we don’t ping skills, we’re focused on stats. Downed state in pvp good or bad?

in Suggestions

Posted by: data.4093

data.4093

TL:DR Downed state adds more skill and allows you to turn a fight around, I like it personally

I don’t see how it adds more skill to a fight. You were doing bad enough to find yourself in a downstate in the first place.

They could remove downstate and give people a little more health to compensate, and achieve basically the same thing — Give people a few more seconds to fight.

It’s simple really and you apparently are not able to grasp the concept. The more there is to a fight (wither it’s key binds, the complexity of the class compared to another) all goes to total skill. (how much better you perform over others mainly). If you can preform better than someone alive and down them, great, if you can do it in the downed state, great again.

Why do people believe this? More factors = more randomness = less skill. Ever play an FPS? It’s simple AND skillful. Some MMOs have 3-4 classes with a handful of mechanics and are much more skillful than GW2 in regards to 1 vs 2+.

If anet wants the downed state to be a new phase of the battle, then they should make it balanced for all classes and look into the rally mechanics as well (see the reasons given above).

Yes…the imbalance is just stupid. I fought 2 people today and was downed then teleported and blinded to prevent 2 stomps. 2 of my teammates showed up to fight and I avoided 4 more stomps(not joking) over the course of the fight. Sure, they should have just attacked instead of stomping and killed me(although how often does a thief avoid 6 stomps?) but why are down states so screwed up? If I down a guardian and I’m low health then I can’t stomp unprotected, or I’ll be downed and he’ll res. Same with rangers and warriors getting vengeance. Necros drop your health a ton if you get anywhere near them. Eles get invulnerable and movement, thieves teleport/stealth and mesmers clone/stealth themselves. These last 3 favor team fights but the other 4 favor downing someone who’s downed you and then ressing yourself. Where was the logic in any of this?

Well he hit me for 12.2k(I’m glass cannon thief 1980 armor) and I didn’t make a thread on the forums about it. Sure I could have just run but so what? Is it balanced when a guardian uses shield of wrath, waits then teleports to you for huge aoe damage? When a mesmer immobilizes you then shatter spikes? No. Spiking isn’t about fairness and this game is becoming more and more about getting the jump on opponents. Ever had an ele RTL out of nowhere, updraft then spike you?…spiking is everywhere, the thief gets crapped on for having stealth and 1 spike skill.

The long recharge time makes it almost impossible to use more than once per fight and lots of thieves using it are just traited for mug.
