If they make any changes it should be small tweaks only.

The more skilled a player the better they can time their stability, dodge rolls, stun breaks, invuns and so on. Learn to play is still the biggest issue with WvW.

This request doesn’t make a lot of sense. How are newbies going to access easy mode and more experienced players aren’t? They’ll just get the training wheels also and mop up the floor with you anyway. You lose nothing by dying in WvWvW, take your lumps like everybody else, discuss builds and rotations with others and recognize when you’ve messed up. There isn’t much you can do about being 7v1’d though.

Haha nah I think he’s right. I’ve played on and fought against BG/JQ/TC/YB etc and YB has a siege culture, sup ACs to be specific. :P

You seem to be as dissatisfied with Anet’s handling of WvWvW as many of the other people complaining here but I think you’re directing your frustration at the wrong people and falling into the trap of apologist/respectability politics. You voluntarily come to the sub-forum of a mode that is in a depressingly rapid decline and you’re complaining about complaints. What did you expect to find? Do you know what it means when there is no dev communication and improvements in a failing game mode and the forums go quiet? I don’t think you know what you’re asking.

Most of the requests I’ve seen here concerning WvWvW updates fall in line with “at least give us an idea of what’s coming” and “rollback to or rotate alpine BL to possibly slow the decline”. Not so much “It’s my overhaul and I want it nowww”!

Way to miss the point lol. The issue isn’t being unable to fight pirate ships, the issue is that the ranged blob meta has degraded the experience for so much of the playerbase. It’s a game and it’s suppose to be fun and entertaining and all that good stuff remember.

What would amulets change? we would still be stuck in the same kitten. It’s not the stats of anything it’s the traits and skills.

It’s the stats and the traits and the skills and the fight scales and the consumables etc. WvWvW has become the gutter where all of Anet’s PvE and eSports changes drained into over the years.

Can Camp Upgrades Ramp Up More?

It takes 20 Yaks to get a camp to secured, which only adds caravan guards but doesn’t make it any harder to cap. This is ~15-20 minutes for an undisturbed camp. It takes 60 total Yaks to reach reinforced, or ~45-60 minutes. At this point, the camp is slightly harder to take for some classes but still a piece of cake for anything with AoE (anything not a thief, that is). Finally, at 140 total Yaks, or ~135-180 minutes, the camp gains a patrol which might possibly aggro someone killing the Supervisor.

That would effectively make camps more zerg friendly and I’d hate to have small fights around a camp like that. Instead of buffing NPC babysitters, perhaps the focus should be getting the maps to be alive with player activity again.

Maybe insane burst skills with short cooldowns is awful design in any PvP enabled mode? Especially with WvWvW’s less restrictive rule set in comparison to sPvP, the HoT power creep is left to run amok. Short, sparse and not fun, just how I like my fights! The combat system that was major in making this game shine is slowly circling down the drain.

People will move on because of what they see in the update. Anet’s vision is clearly completely different from WvW players’. There’s no chance they deliver.

LOL. As if people are quitting because they can’t handle change. No. People are quitting because Anet has “developed” WvW into oblivion. There isn’t going to be a new group taking up the mantle.

I’m sorry but that’s just nonsense. We all agree that WvW in general is in dire straights and many of the old guard have indeed left. But both last night and night before on Black Gate’s EB, I’ve seen zergs led by Commanders who I’ve never seen before (or at the very least, I’m not remotely familiar with). That’s proof enough that there are still players out there willing to take up the mantle and replace those who have given up. Will they be as good as some of our previous veteran commanders who have been tagging up since Beta ?

Probably not. But everyone has to start somewhere…

You’re on the most active map in the most populated tier that players are also migrating towards… I should hope you’ve noticed some new faces.

I can say the same thing. I know for sure that there are players out there looking for fight guilds to run with but then that doesn’t mean said guilds aren’t quickly becoming fewer. This isn’t about player quality. Taking up the mantle of leader means diddly squat when the mode is bleeding players much faster than gaining them. So let’s not pretend that what WvWvW is losing is somehow being replaced.

Anet seems to have some l2monetize issues.

There are GvG streams two years ago that have gotten the Twitch viewership that the ESL broadcasts are getting now. But I think most of the competitive and organized people have moved on at this point and I don’t think it was to sPvP.

Guild halls just seem like padding for HoT, they’re huge yet the actual arena is so small, there isn’t much to do there (just not enough sandbox elements overall in GW2 and it’s not like they’re hooking up the RP ppl either). Plus you’re pretty much stuck with whatever hall you’ve claimed.

The game is supposed to be about horizontal end game but that has become pretty weak.

Can’t really blame the devs for being silent. I’ve had this game since day one and back in the beginning they were active and vocal on the forums. What I noticed was a large part of the community was very hostile towards. Nitpicking their words, insulting them, being passive aggressive.

Calling it “whining” implies that many didn’t have legitimate complaints. Slapping a scoreboard on anything creates a competitive atmosphere, throw unaddressed broken mechanics into the mix and naturally, there will be upset participants. If they violate forum policy, then that’s why we have moderators. I doubt the forum silence became prominent simply because they were thin skinned, instead it seems to be a result of the mode being neglected and them really having nothing to share with an increasingly dissatisfied community. Having the playerbase become emotionally invested in a game, especially an MMO, is a good thing but if and when the devs mess up, they’re going to hear it. Its better than irrelevance and apathy. Passionate players can be a gold mine but Anet is insisting on the eSports route.

I want them to come back, it’s cool to be able to talk to developers and play alongside them in game. Unfortunately I know that they will have to endure a lot of abuse if they do; so its best they continue on with their own “vision” of the game.. in silence. While people blame the devs for things like the current balance of the game I believe a lot of the whining from the community has contributed towards that as well.

Yes, they should silently continue with their own vision of a mode that has been a few years launched, already has an audience and requires massive and constant participation. That totally hasn’t produced disastrous results. >.>
A lot of the “whining” I saw was about population imbalances, stale matchups, defending and rewards in general still not being worth diddly, combat (and most activities) being too zerg friendly and a lot of what we got was in direct opposition of that.

The game is in the worst state it’s ever been and I believe “we” are equally to blame. I don’t think any of this is fixable as it would take too much time and money to do all the fixes needed. Rip Guild Wars 2

Players and the people who run the game are never on equal footing so I think that’s a bit of a stretch. One is amorphous and operates within boundaries set by the other. For example, announcing a “coverage wars” tournament, disregarding human nature and opening up free transfers when tiers had no time to adjust had massive and obvious consequences but they did it anyway! So no, players cannot even begin to do the kind of damage Anet can and has done.

Going back to old BL maps is not practical

Anet must have spent a lot of effort devising and creating the new BL.
Asking them to go back to the old BL is taking a huge step back and wasting all the time and effort they put into designing the new one.
Do you think that’s sensible? Are you asking for something that is impractical?

Lets give them more support and fine-tune the new BL instead of asking them to go back to the old BL.

Why is it not practical? Because Anet would have to admit their methods are producing many disappointed players. There are very major and very common complaints that have remained rather consistent throughout the years yet we get a giant, dusty maze of a map that’s on autopilot. I think WvWvW vets are some of the most resilient players this game has (leaning towards “had”) and there are those who have done a lot to create community and content where Anet has failed miserably. Asking players for more at this point while Anet insists on taking the same secretive, bullheaded path is down right insulting. It is Anet who needs to support their freaking playerbase this time around.

New player inquiry

The new borderlands seem to be quite unpopular for the most part so you’ll probably find more engaging map chat in eternal battlegrounds. If your server has a website, check it out. They probably have a Teamspeak server too. Ask for the info for both. My best advice is to be upfront about what you’re looking for in a guild and ask what kinds of activities they focus on. Hang out and see who you get a long and have fun with. Best of luck!

I don’t remember being shot out of the sky in Aion because I got hit while gliding. I can see myself getting smacked for 5k by hammer auto attack from some random Rev running by and falling to my death into a dusty canyon….unless Anet is going to change how gliding works just for WvWvW (haa!).

I’m sure I’ve said this on here but I think it’s safe to say that a sizable chunk of EoTM’s regulars are looking for a champ train. Taking away EotM doesn’t mean they’ll be regulars on the classic maps. Even if they do, I think WvWvW needs more diversity in group sizes and activities, not encourage more fair weather omni blobs rolling over everything because everything but blobbing is pretty much dead.

And another thing, some people are on servers that are dead and EotM is the only semblance of WvWvW they can get without forking over money/gold to transfer.

I’ve actually heard a excuse concern that putting autoloot would have given an advantage because you would need to grind pve for it… though I sincerely doubt that was a reason.

Which of course could easily be solved by XP in WvW = Tyria XP. And before anyone says anything about the mists not being in Tyria, well, consider 1/3 of Tyrian XP concerns fractals….

In any case, XP going to waste in WvW is unacceptable.

At the end of the day it isn’t about free or subscription. It is about a company that takes this format of play more serious or puts it in the forefront. Right now with HoT it isn’t the case nor has it been previously. Their focus right or wrong is:

1. Raid content
2. eSports

You got that wrong, their focus is:

1. Gem store
2. Grind to facilitate players buying gems

I have never understood why a sub has to be $15/month with no gemstore, or no sub with a focus on gem store. I haven’t played a sub game where the price was different from $15/month.

Why not $5/month with some kind of gemstore? The gemstore would need to be toned down somewhat of course, but the $5 sub would allow lots of new content; all the while paying the bills, with the gemstore being the profit.

They can offer the finishers, boosters, some outfits/armor sets, and the mining tools, plus a few other little QoL goodies through the gemstore. This really wouldn’t impact gameplay at all, and still be attractive to many/most players.

LOL… I don’t blame anyone deciding to jump ship if they’ve had enough (game mode is indeed in it’s death throes), but hell if I’m going back to that obsolete format.

I’d gladly pay a sub if the game is engaging, had depth and there is reasonable communication from the devs on where things are heading. It could even have a micro transaction store, just as long as there is no pay to win.


I have zero and I do mean zero hope for WvWvW. The mode was left to languish and suffer bullkitten PR carrots between deafening developer silence and one awful decision after another (free transfers after announcing seasons, seasons altogether and now these air strikes, banners, an anti-wvwvw map etc). Why would they magically care enough to invest serious resources into a complete revamp now that the population is clearly in the toilet? Totally worth it now! Working for a year on a competitive mode that will need massive and constant player participation in a game that is aging while not having meaningful consultations (not even a peek?!) with the people who’ve faithfully played the mode, produced community resources and hype, is a recipe for failure. Especially since they’ve gotten sooo much wrong before.

I don’t have to be a game dev to tell anyone that the new WvWvW map and many of the guild “upgrades” are trash, just like I don’t have to be a chef to say if a bowl of soup is too kittening salty.

Let’s be real here. Anet’s idea of “inclusive” doesn’t mean talk to people on your server and be sociable with like minded players, it means hop on a map, play sloppily and selfishly and still win because you’re awesome, high five! Basically, zerg it up! Apparently we’re little kids with self esteem issues and need a trophy just for showing up. Regardless of players’ varying levels and aspects of participation, WvWvW’s design tries to keep everyone on this ultra casual, low hanging fruit level instead of providing tools for the different types of WvWvW players that have clearly emerged over the years. And you wonder why, fps killing, server lagging omni blobs become a thing and more and more guilds and scouts and havoc squads and solo roamers just can’t be bothered. Protect the zerg at all costs.

Well… when I first posted in this thread, I did state that I wouldn’t have objected to private tags in the early days when the Servers were still full. But now WvW is a dying mode (and yes ANET is fully to blame here) and I fully understand and agree with ANET taking whatever measures they can to stop the ship from sinking further. And like it or not, a commander tag on the maps is the one thing that will stop Pugs from giving up completely. Furthermore I honestly don’t see the big deal about not tagging up when you want to run private. Yes I understand it’s a QoL thing in not having to “control t” all the time, but at this point I can’t agree with helping send WvW to the bottom over “quality of life”.

I have been in zergs where a Guild commander running tag suddenly takes it down while telling everyone they are now running a private raid thus whoever is not a member, “thanks for following and good bye”. In a case like that, all us pugs had no problem going our merry way.

I don’t get your logic. The tag in your story chose to have an open raid then later switched to private and you had no issue with that. It wouldn’t be any different than now, except that when that commander closed his raid, he’d have a tag that select people can see and “ctrl+t” could serve other purposes, it takes nothing from you. A private tag isn’t going to magically change what people want out of their play time some like pugmanding.

Anet giving the middle finger to guild folks is just another reason why commander tags will continue to disappear as pugmanders tend to have their guild behind them (that’s how some got started and thats why some still play). All this is quite entertaining though, given that pug and guild groups are equally part of the WvWvW experience and have always been. Just gonna sit here, sip this wine and bask in the glow of the flames from this wreck of a game mode.

You want to know why ANET is so dead set against allowing people to run private tags ?

Because in “my story” ANET is deathly afraid that the commander would never have bothered to run a public tag in the first place if they already had the majority of their guild following the tag already. They are afraid that WvW will turn into Maps where you have giant Guild blobs running around unseen by the lowly pugs whose only wish is to enjoy part of what makes wvw so much fun.

So it’s basically a case of them… right or wrong… discouraging anti-social behavior on the part of guilds. The Dev reply in this thread practically screams what I just said.

I fail to see how open raids wouldn’t have become part of WvWvW’s cultural fabric with all the widespread patriotism in the early days, some guilds sprung up around exactly that! There were random players buying tags “for the server!” and those who would follow. Furthermore, there are original plans and ideals and then there is reality. It’s one thing if the game didn’t start out with private tags, which is fine but closed raids are and have been a reality and Anet chose stay out of touch and not to adapt for years, in an MMO of all things. Anet is against a lot of things, doesn’t make it smart but hey, enjoy that new map and reset day that they are “dead set” on keeping lol

We’ve avoided adding this feature because we don’t believe it would be healthy for WvW. While we can appreciate why some players would want a feature like this, lots of other players only engage in WvW when, upon entering a WvW map, immediately see a commander icon to follow.

Guilds have had private raids for years, yet there were always public raids as well because people play the mode differently and guild runs are very much a part of the WvWvW fabric. The same guild raids would coordinate with public tags and other private groups and there was a player made ecosystem.


We try and avoid adding features that can be used to intentionally exclude other players.

Isn’t the very idea of a guild exclusive, why have guilds at all then? Speaking of exclusivity, see the stuff added with HoT.

Telling people not to play as they want (meaning, guilds asking players to leave) must be one the worst ideas I have ever seen getting support around here… What the hell…
I’m ALL for not implementing such a feature.
A lot of people on joining a WvW map will quickly leave it if they find no commander tags on the maps (specially now with low populations). Implementing such feature would make things EVEN WORSE.
Also, is borderline absurd that players are being excluded from game play because some “elitists” think they are the game mode’s owners…
If you want your tagless squad, just ask your squad leader to drop it and just rejoin.
There MUST BE a penalty (a.k.a not having a tag for themselves) for people who do this, otherwise in no time EVERYONE would do it, calling all sorts of “reasons” to justify it.
So NO for invisible tags.

Guild runs aren’t the issue here because they’ve always been a part of WvWvW. I believe the issue is the mode is becoming less and less appealing to players for many reasons so public raids are dwindling because many times, those who want to tag up no longer see the value in it (or have quit) or they just can no longer get a decent force going. Also guild runs aren’t an implication that they own the mode, do what you want, they ask that you not actively follow and respect that they’d prefer to run as a group instead of being a beacon for every random person on a given map and having to manage that as some people actually do not enjoy this kind of play. Are some rude about it? Yes. And I don’t condone that, then again I don’t condone some of the abrasive attitudes of some pug commanders either.

Yep… some Guilds are the nicest people out there, the ones who make an effort to teach others WvW tactics, how to use team speak and so on, that in general contribute to a positive community on their servers. But then there is the other kind… the toxic kind (and I see a lot of their members posting in this very thread) where “it’s all about me”.

Guilds can have different goals and cultures, some have an open door policy and some are more restrictive in admission and are even tight knit, this has been the case in every MMO I’ve played. This points per kill will be greatly abused by people with accounts/friends on opposing servers.

Be ready to find small groups farming PPK from naked characters in some obscure corner of the new BL maps.

All of a sudden the rewards for winning the week are worth doing that? Doubt it lol.

A team supposedly works hard for a year yet has kitten all to show. No teasers, can’t even talk about it, nada! More secret squirrel direction and more hype “beta tests” of poorly designed and implemented features that will get dumped onto players. The forums are the real endgame of GW2.

Well written, +1. My guild just made the “we’re done with GW2 raiding” post on our guild forums and we’re playing other games. Our drivers, along with other core members just can no longer spare the kittens to keep trying. The out of touch, poorly designed and implemented HoT additions aside, the matches have very little to offer other than boring EBG blobs orbiting around SM and the small man scene is now a joke 95% of the time. The ecosystem of old is gone and this game’s potential is not far behind.

Of course it’s been lip service… Anet is not changing stuff for us really, they are pushed to do things now that a super pvp game called CU is becoming reality and they have to compete…

We will see an effort now because they don’t have a choice anymore.

I’d love to be proven wrong but I don’t think this major overhaul will be that major. Didn’t they just toss out a season and some minor PR efforts when Archeage was launching? I expect to see more of the same when other anticipated MMOs launch. WvWvW has decayed to the point where I’d question anybody who will actually throw serious resources into fixing it.

I don’t think even if they added much to WvW now, that many would come back to WvW play…

Every day they wait, the less chance people will come back.

The B2P “feature” where people easily return to the game after quitting doesn’t actually work. If sufficient time passes after someone quits, it’s too late.. they’ve already forgotten about the game. (Basically what they said in Swingers.)

B2P could work, provided that the developer doesn’t disappoint and frustrate people like Anet is doing now. Even the gem shop is pretty lame. In a “vanity and skins horizontal progression” game that’s riddled with trench coats, capes for one’s buttocks and drapes for one’s loins, you’re somehow still faced with all or nothing “outfits” being added one after another but you can buy a pet rock! Instead of attractive offerings, they’ve been slowly weaving gem to gold traps into the actual game.

Plus there is a big difference between leaving because you’ve soured on the game and taking a break because of exams, new schedule or family. A subscription would force Anet to create *new*content regularly (and not removing and re-gating stuff) and balance regularly, communicate regularly. Ticking off customers who have options probably won’t work out well regardless of business model.

I don’t know if you’ve taken a gander at the GW2 twitch channels and how it’s been shrinking. sPvPers trying to hold it together while jumping around in the lobby, sporadic WvWvW raid/roaming streams that, due to PvD and dead small man are just as boring as the PvE broadcasts that seem to be in the majority (I can’t imagine those PvE raids and map completions being engaging for long).

The DBLs cater to zergs and blobs, which is the only thing we ever faced when matched with Elona, RS, or Kodash.

Funny considering how the desert BL is meant to break blobs up.

I don’t know. Looking at some of the other changes. They added T3 gates, tougher lords, auto upgrades and barricades in the same update that gutted guild catapults and heavily gated guild buffs. The days of some random player popping an upgrade from their personal guild and yelling “+ 5 sup on south camp” are done and done.

Dragon banners, seriously?

I’ve never had a problem with the dragon banner. Just dodge or move out of the fire, cleanse. No big deal. The centaur banner is much worse with the constant immobilizations. One uses up all your cleanses trying to move, in the meantime, you getting caught in the enemy “bomb.”

I don’t even think the AoE indicator for “Stampede of Arrows” on Centaur Banner shows up. Just little arrows on the ground and in a big fight, that’s a problem. It hits like a truck and it’s on an 8 sec cooldown.

I think that’s one of the biggest factors saving GW2 right now and it seems even that is quickly degenerating. I refrained from commenting on the holiday sneak peek thread because I think it’s pretty insulting that they chose to not actually do anything but rather dangle yet another “soon” carrot and effectively disappear again. Huge red flag.

I’m seeing banners fairly often these days. I think they are totally unnecessary in large fights simply because GW2’s combat system already makes that very forgiving and big groups don’t need more handicaps in their favor. In smaller fights, just the defiance bar alone is bizarre especially on some of these bunker HoT builds. When I look at skills like “stampede of arrows” on centaur banner, I just chuckle.

Solo roaming? Ha! Good luck with that. Seems like roaming is dead, it’s just gank squads orbiting around PvD zergs. The scene is so starved, it’s Hardly worth the HoT re-gearing or transferring or sometimes even logging in.

I loved roaming on the Alpine maps. On EBG it’s like you’re always within range of a cannon and a blob.

It’s flirting with pay2win at the very least. Is it as obnoxious and two faced as Archeage? Nah. Can you still run around on some pre-Hot builds and kill people? Yes, but it’s a lot tougher and some fights are just dead ends because of the sheer amount of sustain and damage the new specs can access. I think players without HoT are kind of kittened in all aspects of the game.
