nw corner map (between tower and hero point)

Its not that simple.

Bingo! I’ve mentioned this before. The DBL, while huge, offers a whole lot of nothing strategically speaking. There is very little reason to be in many areas of the map so it doesn’t provide fertile ground for even open field clashing.

When not in guild raids, I ran around solo/small man on alpine a lot. Some of the best fights I’ve had were on my shatter Mesmer on alpine playing survivor at an enemy’s north camp and harassing small pug groups trying to take back the southern towers. DBL didn’t offer that because auto upgrades and convuluted pathing so no one would show up for a fight so I just avoid because I’m not there to PvE.

I’ll play on it. ABL is a functioning WvWvW map and bringing it back is just one step on the road to salvaging the mode, but reverting the map alone won’t be some kind of Christmas miracle.

My understanding of that bit was that defenders should be given better balanced tools. IMO walls being death traps starts a snowball effect of terrible gameplay. With walls being relatively safe from player weapon attacks, the siege cap can be lowered, meaning attackers can be pushed off and then they can counter seige knowing they won’t face 20 ACs tucked behind a choke if they breach. It won’t be fun killing siege spam defense or ktrain PvD offense like we have now. That’s just my opinion. I could bug him and perhaps get him to clarify :P

This post deserves a bump and a half because of recent news about the WvWvW maps. Yes I’m bumping not just because of the original post but the responses as well, it’s worth a read.

I think it’s important to get back to the basic premise of WvWvW, which is players battling tooth and nail for dominance using various strategies and not just two (blob and or siege). Get in tune with the diverse playstyles of your playerbase, then you can salvage this mode. A mode that has the potential to best thing since sliced bread.

I think the AFK timer is fine. If the Deserted BLa had something to offer then there would be little reason to complain about the EBG queue, hell there probably wouldn’t even be an EBG so often. Go read something and wait your turn.

Nah they didn’t address most of what’s in the blog post. Not defense rewards, stale match ups (while managing to mention it repeatedly in multiple paragraphs), PPT, OP seige and they even went ahead and made a maze like autopilot borderland with insular objectives which took pretty much everything but ktrains out of the picture (so much for supporting player roles). I could go on.

Simply making the rules a bit tighter would fix it.

If more than 2 minutes AFK in WvW you should be kicked back to LA. simple.
It is a War, and active numbers matter. AFK are a dead weight, and hinder outnumbers bonus, or Queue for people that might want to get in, (if there is a queue).

You see Back before the new maps I ran on EBG and noticed a lot of people just sitting at keep or spawn waiting for their guild cuz of the cue but those same people would get mad because we are losing its like help us don’t sit, they also would only follow their guild and no one else like they are to good to follow another commanders. so I agree we need to stop the bull and kick the afkers

How are they afk when they’re there to answer and “get mad”? :| Unless afk means them not being where you want. Not everybody wants in on public raids. Makes zero sense for them to do something they don’t enjoy so Johnny Random can have fun. Move passed that.

HoT was never planned to be shipped as one big lot. It is to be supposed to come in several batches. To evaluate whether HoT is a 100% product or not you have to wait until the evening before expansion 2.

Except that the (non-existant) big wvw overhaul has been cancelled for good.

Which will ship out in smaller pieces sooner now rather than make players wait until whenever for it to be released as a whole.

You clearly havent been here long enough. “We will focus on wvw’s core issues like population imbalance” – that was said 3 years ago. Dont speak on this subject if youve only been in wvw (and the forums) for a few months, youre making yourself out to look incredibly naive.

Ah. So now you’re resulting to personal attacks because you cannot provide a source. If they kept saying it every other week then it should be fairly easy to prove that. The only time that I remember a dev having a discussion about it was in a thread sometime in 2024 where they were just gathering ideas. No promises were made. It may have been the CDI thread but I can’t remember for sure.

They weren’t saying it every other week. Quite the contrary really. Their silence was actually a big problem. However there have been several carrots dangled intermittently that didn’t materialize into much.

  • First paragraph addressed culling. Yes that’s how old that is.
  • “They’ve shifted their focus to solidifying WvWvW” since 2013 and we’re hearing it yet again after HoT
  • Defense still offers crap rewards
  • Squads weren’t ready even when HoT dropped, squad markers even later. I don’t know what guild rewards he’s talking about hopefully not guild missions because…I’m going to stop there.
  • Match Ups have remained untouched.
  • Arguably, the only playstyle that’s seen support is the uber casual, all inclusive, grade school style, everybody gets a trophy blob (not the scout, the roamers, havoc, skill group)
  • Speaking of the devil, zerging is still the most effective
  • PPT and resulting PvD is unchanged
  • Siege is still overtuned and common as salt to boot so “MOAR arrow carts!” is actually a thing.

WvWvWers have been strung along for a while.

I bought HoT purely to play the new specs in WvWvW with my guild. I already knew going in that this expansion, like the core game, is largely PvE but I was genuinely annoyed at the heavy gating, the forced PvE to unlock HoT upgrades (for both characters and guilds) and just how little there was to actually do on these mere four maps before running into serious repetition.

While it was fun for my guildmates to create new builds and group comps and generally laugh about all the clearly unbalanced HoT additions, we all realized what it meant for WvWvW’s future and the enthusiasm was short lived. We’re still a guild, just officially not in GW2. Anet breaking communication droughts to promise post HoT WvWvW dev focus only to pop up months later with what’s tantamount to “we don’t know what we’re doing” has pretty much sealed their fate for a lot of the people I play with and the buyer’s remorse is real. From this player’s perspective, while really pretty, HoT was a feeble swing and a depressing miss in terms of gameplay and value.

I find people threatening to leave unless Anet does x,y, or z to be quite comical. A better threat would be to stay and whine on the forums all day. Although that hasn’t been all that effective from what people are saying about anets tendency to ignore the community.

Who is to say that he’s not currently exercising his options while being concerned about the direction of WvWvW? One can do both you know. Don’t be that guy. :/

I think Anet realizes that they are at a turning point in WvW. It has been put off for so long that they must make an effort now or, effectively, scrap it. It seems like they’ve chosen to put the effort in.

That’s not to say WvW won’t be put on hold again…just that we’re due for some updates before that happens, at least.

What’s given you the impression that they’re choosing to put in the effort? Not trying to be a smartkitten, honest question.

Arrow carts simply do too much damage to players, everyone knows this is true. Defending should be about trying to counter the enemy siege placement, but killing them in 3 seconds with sup acs.

More problematic in my opinion is the inner smc 2 door shield gen + door treb + multiple 3rd floor sup acs defense. 4-5 people can defend INSANELY well against a massive group, 100% countering tons of golems, rams, catas and almost whatever else is used. They should add walls to inner smc now that shield gens and un-pvdable gates are a thing.

True – 3rd floor arrow carts should NOT be able to hit outside siege but they do. Arrow carts are simply broken and need to be removed. Same with Shield Gens. The game was fine before HoT, now it is just ridiculous.

So is aoe and most range skills, people need to be clever not ending in AC spam, theres siege with longer range, would be better to tone down players damage and then see what is needed to work on siege.
Stack a good “number” of eoe peeps near wall and u can clear siege easilly, and even wipe players at siege.
Castle design are so bad that is not difficult to counter AC’s.

Ac’s need to be strong to be in pair with other damage sources….so other things need to be reworked first.

AC’s are too strong NOW. Also defenders can place AC’s where they can’t be hit by AoE and don’t even see over the walls to hit. That is ridiculous.

It used to be that it was a 50/50 chance that one could lose a gari (on ABL’s) before HoT but, they are EPIC battles. Now defenders have they upper hand with all the HoT crap added (chilling Fog, Emergency WP, etc.). This is one reason why PPT during low population times is big right now.

SO ac’s on wall now not be hitted from AOE ? good that has been fixed because with that was extremelly easy to get the wall cleared, if u dont have line of sightshould not be hitting there characters line of sight and not player camera/view line of view.

About the Superior AC damage… it needs to be strong, while other things in game are to strong to.

Most seige on walls can get hit by player AoEs even if there are some awkward spots where they can’t. Sup ACs are overtuned for how common they are. Throw in other seige weapons and some of these psychotic guild upgrades (which is a common occurrence now) and defense becomes too easy.

All servers PvD and use seige but when it’s virtually all a server can offer opponents, it becomes a problem especially at this stage in the game where PPT is what it is. YB doesn’t have to be outgunned to resort to this, even vs other pug groups and this isn’t some myth.

People who like current BL maps are playing the game, not whining in the forum about it. Removing them will upset lots of players who actually like them, and possible make them quit. People who demand old BL maps do not even play the game anymore, and they will not return once there are old maps again.

Sure, sure continue the clear and rapid downward spiral by catering to the people who like empty maps. Recipe for success right there.

Can you explain how old maps will generate more WvW players? So many players waited for HoT to solve actual WvW problems (server population, nightcapping, skill balance etc) and people were just sticking around to see if these will be adressed. Nothing was done about these so people left the game, making the maps emptier then ever and creating an illusion that new maps were to blame for everything.

The issue with reverting back to old maps is that it takes a lot of work and wastes even more time that should be spent fixing real WvW problems. The BL maps were empty before the HoT and will be even more emptier once the old maps are returning because there just is not enough WvW players anymore to cover 4 maps, at least below tier 1. So, things get changed, work is being done, time is wasted, and result is exactly same as before, if not even worse.

WvW could be great even on completely flat green square if the basic problems are first taken care of. And it will still suck and continue to lose players no matter which map is used if nothing is done about the basics.

I like how you chose to ignore the stream of players saying why they don’t like the new maps even though they still play WvWvW. Did you miss the other complaints about guild upgrades, power creep etc? I don’t see anyone saying that the new map is the sole or even the main culprit for the rapid post HoT decline.

Anet has "wasted " resources plenty if that’s your outlook so why not waste more by reverting to a functioning WvWvW map instead of an obstacle course for hamsters. Either manage the game properly or watch people walk away from it. No excuses.

Siege disablers aren’t the solution to seige bunkering if you can’t get into position to toss them. Want to know why people leave when they see 20 ACs? Well sure it’s not not fun for many to sit there and counter siege but many times, even when they do, the defenders bail after the final breach. Effectively making attackers grind out siege warfare for nothing. The defenders will run to another structure to do the same and immediately backcap when bored attackers leave. The game has a tendency of making the lowest hanging fruit the most effective.

WvWvW had servers engaging in multi-pronged attacks but a dwindling community and hollow victories mean less leadership and effort. Coverage aside, the changes made to the game over the years have ensured that these two tactics are optimal, biggest zerg and the most manned seige. There is so much that needs adjusting that I doubt the remaining WvWvW playerbase is worth it, sadly. People are probably going to be sorely disappointed in whatever is offered WvWvW in the future.

Solo roaming at the very least is absolutely dead. Roaming over all is not, just that most people are in groups of between 3 and 6, which is in part why solo roaming is dead.

The size of the new borderland, the size of the groups most people roll in, structure defenses post HoT, sentry tracking and specialization power creep have pretty much obliterated solo roaming. Unless you’re a Dare Devil or a Scrapper, you’ll just get ganked constantly and will have nothing you can at least attempt to capture because it takes forever to solo upgraded towers now.

The stubborn ones like myself still roam alone. I’ll find the odd good fight but it’s hardly worth the frustration of all the deaths I suffer in the process. It’s just unfortunate that I dislike roaming with others and that roaming is my favorite thing to do in WvW because if you’re alone you won’t live long. Seems like 90% of the time you find a good 1v1/2 more people sprout out of the ground like weeds and you just get overwhelmed or zerged.

While blobby roamers have been a thing, I believe that solo roamers are less common for an additional reason. That is, the game has become so pointless that the only reason some people even log in is to play with friends, hence the group roamers.

No but seriously Anet, ditch this upgrade since you’re effectively reintroducing culling. Now there is a real power creep in the mix thanks to prior changes to traits and stability combined with other HoT goodies. Combat is becoming depressing and that was a major selling point for GW2. Public test servers are in order I think.

Hoarders: YB edition. I think this is why PvD and siege spam is the preferred route. It’s spun as being “defense minded” but its more like a perversion of it. It’s taking the easiest path available in game by leaning real hard on increasingly overtuned mechanics added by an out of touch developer and generally playing it safe. The game rewards that with high score and now they’ve gotten more bodies to do more of the same since the lower tiers are drying up. It’s a haven for that playstyle and not much else. I wouldn’t call it healthy because a lot of the obnoxious additions to the game that have been chasing players away are largely what’s been bolstering the YB playstyle. Selling boredom wholesale.

I’ve yet to see anyone even imply that pre-HoT WvWvW wasn’t obviously dying and alpine BL would save the day. It’s repeated that it can however, slow the escalated decline brought on by the poor terrain on Dedert BL, especially if it doesn’t have all the OP HoT stuff on it. And maybe just maybe it’ll help repair Anet’s battered image.

At this point, I’d rather get 2v1’d again to get action on the maps. BG seems dead because there’s no action, which causes people to log out, cause we’d rather do anything else other than karma training (I tag up for fights, fights end, half my group logs off). Groups from YB and JQ are just karma training empty borderlands thinking they’re hot stuff, complaining about us zerging them down with 10-15 man groups calling them “blobs”, all the while bunkering in keep lords rooms with siege.

Good joke.

If you want BG to play again, bring us fights without siege. Most of us won’t even care if we’re vastly outnumbered.

@Torqued: You seem bitter that BG won’t respond to your requests to push PPT. Guess what buddy, we’re not here to play for you. We’re here to play for us. If you want to play PPT, tag up and do it. Don’t expect someone else, who has no desire to want to play for PPT, to play that way.

Regardless of your perception of my attitude, the fact is that Blackgate is actively driving away PPT players and putting themselves at a disadvantage. Blackgate will never beat Yak’s Bend until they are willing to become like Yak’s Bend.

No amount of server politics will stop the unwashed hoards of Yak’s Bend.

You don’t know how PPT works, regardless of all those number crunching stuff you do (good work on those btw, they’re interesting to look at, despite not having any real relevance in the current WvW climate).

Why don’t you explain to me how PPT works? I’m always open to learning something new. What is my data missing that is so important? Server politics?

PPT isn’t a function (right now) of organisation and skill, but rather, of time and numbers. The more numbers you have on at any given time means that you’ll naturally get more PPT.

If you log in at any time outside of NA prime on BG you’ll notice this. Our small groups are backcapping as fast as they can, but due to lack of numbers, our PPT suffers. We lack numbers because people aren’t willing to put the time into WvW right now due to the lack of incentives to win and the lack of rewards while playing.

But then, I don’t think anyone on BG ever saw you put more hours in-game to help out our weaker time slots.

Maybe if Blackgate didn’t have such a sour attitude towards pugs and pve players they would have MORE people to put in those hours and there would be no grind. But alas, Blackgate is a “skilled fight” server and have chased away all those no skill pvd players.

Your inability to get the coverage speaks volumes about your server culture.

Your last couple lines sound like you don’t actually play on BG. Plus pugs are rallied plenty and the TS channels are used by said pugs when a tag goes up soooo I’m starting to wonder about you…

@ FogLeg.9354 – I can’t ignore any condition: Top four of condis I hate the most: Torment, Confusion, Chill, Fumble/Glance. They either need to be toned down or removed. You can also give me my old condi removal back, then they wouldn’t be that much of a problem to me.

Burn would definitely make my top four. It’s hilariously strong.

It is, but it doesn’t control me, it just kills me. With Torment I have to stand still, which is rather dangerous as a thief, confusion makes me helpless, chill slows me which again is dangerous for a thief, glance takes my crits and endurance regen away. And unfortunately I have little options to get the latter two off, or even 3, as I can’t do much when being confused.

Don’t even get me started on torment. Here we have a fluid, action oriented combat system aaand we’re punished for moving. Because chill, immob and even cripple totally aren’t already a thing.

  • Support for the major playstyles that made themselves quite obvious over the years.
  • Population balancing so I can log into active maps and matchups that aren’t encrusted with mold.
  • Better rewards as a result of better team balance and incentives for players to clash instead of running.
  • Separate combat balance for WvWvW.
  • Various maps in rotation that don’t make me feel like I’m a lab rat

Then I’ll have legitimate reasons to harass my guild into coming back!

Improve walls pls, so we can defend

The structure siege aspect of the game needs a rework. The walls are death traps, which makes little sense from a defense standpoint. Siege weapons on the wall cost supply and likely currency, bombing them down with weapon skills that cost nothing but 30 seconds worth of cooldown tops is cheap and easy. The result? Defenders fall back and abuse an already high siege cap with overtuned weapons. The attackers withdraw and it ends.

On both sides, low end tactics are enough to succeed. Thicken the walls, so the seige cap can be decreased and some of these ridiculous HoT upgrades can be removed or majorly reworked. Make it so attackers have to use something other than ktrain tactics and make it so defenders have to make an effort to push out instead of easily mopping up after 20 ACs.

@ FogLeg.9354 – I can’t ignore any condition: Top four of condis I hate the most: Torment, Confusion, Chill, Fumble/Glance. They either need to be toned down or removed. You can also give me my old condi removal back, then they wouldn’t be that much of a problem to me.

Burn would definitely make my top four. It’s hilariously strong.

BG for better or worse clung to the old school of heavy guild play. As guilds have slowly exited or diminished in GW2, BG suffered accordingly. YB still thrives because it is really a collection of roamers, PUGs and skirmishers. I believe this in turn hastened both JQ and BG attrition because YB zergs tend to disengage rather than become a bag farm to to better organized guilds. If a big BG guild shows up on a map they can dominate a battle but end up losing the PPT war and find an opponent that simply evades them until they gain an advantage.

Roamers? Lol ok Streagen come on with that. Daredevils and Scrappers running 15 feet from a map blob aren’t roaming. The bandwagon of guilds from T1 that pushed YB up from T2 may have helped a bit. We all know how PPT works and the kind of easy, safe activities it rewards. Build 20 ACs in any structure and see if anybody left playing this game is gonna care enough to take it. But at least you admit YB runs from fights. :P

I haven’t played since before the expansion came out so I just logged in to see my home server, Blackgate, losing by a mile when the opposite used to be true. And we’re losing to Yak’s Bend? WTF LOL! Did I wake up in the Twilight Zone or what? Where’s Beastgate?!

  • YB got guilds from T1 that lumped into an already PPT heavy culture
  • People who aren’t happy playing against that are playing other games

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blackgate culture didn’t drive PPT oriented guilds to Yak’s Bend. Which is why there is no longer anyone on BG to pull the PPT load.

Probably a combination of arrogance and elitism that killed BG. They will fall, and then they will blame Anet.

Mm maybe. I avoid the sever politics because well, I don’t care so much. Servers need balance, BG not having PPT groups is one thing but YB having virtually only PPT players is unhealthy as well because it creates a stalemate of nothingness due to bunker+PvD=EasyPPT. In a game where the winner gets diddly squat, this a bad news. Players will continue to not care.

Its a myth that YB only has PPT guilds. A myth propagated mostly by BG. The reason YB’s KDR tends to be low is because they are more welcoming of pugs than BG is. BG is so obsessed with KDR and PPK that they literally chase off pugs.

Played on and against both. I have to disagree. Other servers have observed the the same thing about YB. It is what it is.

How so?

Anet refused to take the ecosystem of WvWvW into consideration and most of the diversity is gone. Not just raiding guilds but roamers, havoc. It’s just musical chair blobs that mostly queue EBG at prime time. Mostly.
