i usually like to go ft/eg/rocket boots when i play condi in wvw. its hard to give up S, but i make up for it with sneak gyro and use traveler runes so i dont have to take tools/inventions. its not great but holosmith might be able to cover better than scrapper along with a few other build changes. i havent tried it yet on this patch though.

there is a stark difference when you walk up to a mesmer using the mantra heal and you use eg1 vs pistol 1. and thats a pretty specific fight but its the most drastic one i can think of where the difference is literally “they wither” vs “you cant touch them”. seriously, those fights are always over in about 10 secs and who wins depends on if you use eg1 or not.

drop weapon cancels it, but you dont get superspeed until the aftercast plays… so thats about the only thing ive to be not freakin amazing about rocket boots now.

AED ... PVP/WVW

I’ve also been using this with a condition build I’m testing. One thing that seems bugged (or intended but not clear) is AED’s interaction with AMR.

Been using it in WvW all night and even though I activate AED well above 25% health threshold of AMR when I go below the 25% it does not activate AMR trait and come off CD. Basically taking AMR with AED is like not having a trait at all. Several hours worth of fights and not once did it reset the CD or work as it should.

that sucks and is extremely unfortunate and (conspiracy theory) is probably the result of the same interaction occurring in the past back when amr was on a 10 sec icd and the devs breaking it intentionally.

hope they fix.

its gone unnoticed as far as im aware, prolly cuz aed is either a death wish or broken op and never just good/great.

interestingly, blowtorch does about 50% more dps than bomb 1 in a power build with capped might. (fire bomb does about 33% more.) in shield’s absence of dps and with someone else’s better, easier might, blowtorch can fill a gap in your rotation. but it approximately falls to “dont bother” priority if you aren’t point blank. and assuming, of course, it isn’t better to sword auto than bomb auto… a piece of data we dont yet have. also not sure about new stat spreads.

mh pistol has 1 must use skill and 1 single target filler skill and the auto should basically never be used. the condis that are worth using arent condis that engi even has traits for. nearly all of condi engis weapon set damage is in pistol 4, which isnt mh pistol. thats not great at all. the reason its meta is because its the only option, not because its actually good. if sword were distinctly condi instead of hybrid, every condi engi looking for dps (which is what you go condi engi for, not control, support, tanking, healing, etc) that unlocks holosmith would use sword. since sword is a hybrid weapon, people will be divided on it, but from how it looks right now imo its really not a worse option than pistol dps wise and it brings extra mobility.

rifle has no useless skills. despite 2 and 4 being bad damage and 3 and 5 taking up so little of your time, there isnt a skill on rifle that you can say just plain hurts you to use like pistol 1. not that rifle is in a good spot compared to hammer when it comes to how well the weapon fills your time and multitasks, but it certainly is better off.

i dont know if you were around for turret engis in pvp. it literally erased skill at all tiers of gameplay. that is why turrets are kittenty today, and deservedly so, but a case can easily be made for skill splits. perhaps there are old youtube vids you can look up.

just put the number for your heat somewhere visible and big enough to not have to squint and that will suffice. its a number we will constantly have to have attention dedicated to. anything less will make the spec unnecessarily, pointlessly, and extremely hard to play.

ive go in with a perfect team cps-ingi-chrono-necro-druid all perfectly exp.
We have first try 1st and 2nd boss easy without any fall. we go on 3rd boss , 100% to 30% under 5min. after 30% every die. how to dps anomaly on a disapear ground while get dammage by elit mesmer atk from boss while he do his dammage’s pull in same time , while red balls every where… every ppl die under 20sec… just insane.

If you stand inside the anomaly’s shield, it will remove the damage from the reactor’s electricity fields – so while it may not be safe in the middle, you can step inside it on the outside lanes and be safe

err.. over the air while the anomaly is alive?

I think a purely graphical indicator would be a bad move. look at the difference between having health % on monsters hp bars vs not. it’s the kind of qol that should not have taken 4 years and raids to implement. we should always have info that important available through 1st party software.

I feel extremely strongly about this and will not be convinced otherwise.

extremely important gameplay revolves around heat: explode with the 150% trait and you probably die. not maintaining it loses tons of damage. the visual difference between 100% and 105-120% will be next to nothing, but one means go to photon immediately and the other means go to it in like 10 sec, and 10 sec is a lot.

if you are getting something out of adrenal implant or optimized activation, you aren’t getting something out of excessive energy at the same time. it’s a conflicting gameplay pattern.

switching exceasive energy to be on while adrenal and optimized are working and adding in the synergy of mine trail / dodge bomb gives that buzzword one should now avoid: purity of purpose.

I said you were an OUTLIER, as in you are statistically at the short end of GoB attainment speed.

Claws and such drop all over the game, not only as the final reward for a track. Most people don’t have tons of GoB laying around that they can just throw one at a cat.

Also as a pint of comparison the yellow car only wants a cheap food item.

use xp boosters
they cut your time to do a track by 1/3
make sure you start your play sessions by going and doing stuff and not by waiting around for a commander to get ready, and preferably in outnumbered maps if you can find them. getting a lot of participation quickly goes a long way.

i think traiting the photon dash instead of turning photon 1 into an explosion will result in a minimal dps loss and more utility, i dont particularly want to be using photon 1 as condi even if it is an explosion. explosions no longer have a +10% explosion damage mod and im not sure shrapnel will add enough to justify using it over sword 1. but could be wrong, well see.

I would make a petition if I were you to give kits cd on swap because its very confusing if you can access all the skills all the same time. Oh wait our next Elite will do that. lets talk about a pvp scenario:
red necro standing on home. blue engi inc. red thief +1s.
engi dodges into the necro mark. thief bursts and gets engi to 25% almost immediately. engi disappears and reappears mid at full hp.

how many people in bronze and silver do you think will understand and be able to process what just happened?

on the other hand, lets say the engi is bad at dodging and doesnt happen to actually evade an attack. then the trait was useless. its a grandmaster. it should never just be useless. grandmasters are build defining. they should be things that cant happen to have no effect ever, because they are build defining. this new iteration cant have no effect ever, because you cant have all 5 toolbelt skills interrupted ad infinitum. it will fire at some point.

thats why this is a good change.

so why do you even bother? sorry you cant luck into a double stealth any more, sucks to be you.

when you have to change how something works and not just how good it works, those are the changes anet doesnt want to constantly do and saves for expansion times. those are the changes that engi often needs. thats why we constantly have to wait. because no one wants to come up with or support simple numbers changes that would made bad things better and they would rather have shiny new things that work differently and cost animator and programmer time rather than just balance team time.

if the animations really bother you, just use grenades any time you would camp bomb kit and it’s only a small dps loss and you also get range. however, letting something as silly as animations get in the way of you doing the best you can in challenging content isn’t really a great mindset to have.

that said, maybe its too weak to warrant use. or something. maybe they should reduce the stack count trigger to 3 or 4. the only really low cd toolbelt skill is rifle turret, so it’s hard to achieve more than like 20% quickness uptime. applied force gives a straight 40% easily.

I find people like OP extremely offensive. We have our own minds, and can think on our own. 99% of players dont base their opinions on what people on the forums say.

Most players stay away from the forums bc of all the unofficial Anet apologist-lurker-spokesmen constantly dismissing & trolling people who try to make legitimate criticisms.

This forum is meant to discuss ideas and criticisms. If you don’t like it, maybe you shouldn’t spend hours lurking the forums. For god sakes, maybe let Anet actually respond to players who spend more time in-game than the forums.

People tend to use this ‘jack of all trades’ term to describe Engineer as being average at everything but it wasn’t, it was good at solo play and dueling. Somewhere people seem to have lost the true spirit of the Engineer, believing that it was solely used to tank content but instead through a bit of player ingenuity with traits, the right gear and a little practice tanking was just ONE of the MANY things that Engineer did well pre-HoT.

It is sad that it was arguably at one point the best example of a class that could be used to select a singular role and stick to it. Now as opposed to what it was Pre-HoT it is REDUCED to a singular role that YOU have to stick to (different flavors of tanking).

This is the most random post I’ve ever seen. From this I do not know your position on the balance of engineer. As far as tank engineer goes, I do not believe that was ever a thing besides turret engineer which was quickly nerfed.

thief is fun and easy in wvw but im not sure i would want deadeye over daredevil. i suppose i cant wait to at least try killshot thief. holosmith doesnt much look like a wvw spec to me despite its attention to replacing what you give up by forgoing alchemy and or tools.

i think shaped charge at 10% might be better than aim assisted rocket for a bruiser build. you can rely on vuln, or at least 1 stack of it. but it wasnt better at 7%, which is where it was the last time anyone thought about using explosives in pvp.

i dont see glass cannon being useful at all. you might as well take grenadier even without taking nades.

same for thermobaric. entirely useless and bad. take shrapnel instead, because you have some explosions. and random cripple is annoying. annoy your opponents instead of annoying yourself when thermobaric does nothing when you try to skillfully make use of it.

Hah yeah agreed on Explosive traits, that specialization’s traits are horribly balanced in PvP.

Evasive Powder Keg, Steel Packed Powder’s vuln, Explosive Powder’s 10% and Shaped Charge’s 10%, factor in the vulnerability for your allies attacks – Explosives is pretty legit .. roughly 25-40% more threatening Engi pressure depending on the PvP fight size. For a Grenade & Crystal Configuration: Storm Holosmith it will be assuredly one of the first builds I test.. if you can Grenade while in Photon Forge after the lockout, it’ll be possible to stall your heat generation while remaining in Photon Forge

its really too bad engi simply cannot have enough defensive stuff in todays environment without dedicating a minimum of 2 specs.

im not sure which direction i would rather have them go:

  1. bake more strong defense into 1 core spec and take it out of the 3rd typical core spec, replacing with damage that doesnt compete with other playstyles. while centralizing (in that pvp/wvw builds literally wont do anything without it as opposed to now where they might just flop over anyways), if properly balanced it could open up several different playstyles that accentuate certain utilities while also leaving room to take an elite to further diversify.
  2. put enough defensive traits across all specs so engi isnt tied to any one spec in particular in any game mode.

but of course, they choose the 3rd option: leave the old because spaghetti code and just make new things not often enough.

holosmith looks like you could potentially give up alchemy, fwiw. alchemy is there for condi removal primarily, protection/safety secondarily, and might tertiarily. holosmith has just the 1 utility for protection, but it has multiple dashes including useful superspeed, and a bunch of no icd condi removal when you drop photon, and perfectly good might. its not a really boon heavy spec like alchemy but with all the corruption/stripping thatll fly around that doesnt seem to be a bad thing to me.

i dunno its hard for me to think of this in terms of pvp when it screams pve kit dancer so loudly.

i love the holosmith so far , its a jack of all trades as an engineer should be it has both melee and long ranged attacks as well as some condi if you manage the heat system and trais properly , theres a no heat risk trait for low skill build and a high heat trait wich unlocks more effects on heat build up for skilled players

so yeah it is gonna be a spec with high skill ceiling but good pay off for once

What long range attacks?

There is one Elite with 1200range on a 60sec cooldown. That is it, that is all the long range there is. Literally every other skill is 600range or less. Holosmith is a close-range/melee fighter, just like every other Engineer spec.

This is easily the weakest of all new elite specs. Subpar damage, and yet for some reason you must damage to attain this. If you think otherwise, you havent looked at the new Ele/Necro/Mesmer/Ranger/Thief/Guardian/Warrior specs, which all easily have better DPS and utility. On top of this self-dmg insult, you also lose your F5 skill, and not the weapon-swap button. Bc reasons and excuses.

I’m not gonna waste my time anymore on what is my favorite class in terms of mechanics. Engineer is always a string of disappointments. They get little resources for proper development by Anet devs since launch. Nerfs and new ideas are always hastily implemented, with little concern for overall class feel and performance relative to other classes. Posts on this forum with suggestions are always ignored.

The past day saw TWO front-page threads on GW2’s subreddit with Holosmith being laughed at by everyone: Fidget-smith, and Jihad-smith. Well done, Anet.

Reddit is a has toxic community to begin with. Only select few people actually got the chance to test out the new Elite spec for a very limited time while everyone else is screaming wolf over speculations rather than having actully tested the Elite Spec and gotten the actual data.

1) No, people like you are toxic – dismissing other ppl’s concerns like they have no valid points to make, just because you can’t accept criticism of products you enjoy. You are also being rude to my comments, as if I dont have a mind of my own to form my own thoughts. Stop pretending you are above others because you feel differently, yet have no counter-argument.

2) We have the numbers from the actual skills, we can do math. I have spent nearly 5 years theorycrafting builds in GW2, and the numbers dont add up to anything significant for Holosmith. Dont tell me that feelings are more relevant than math and numbers.
Additionally, we’ve seen people play the class on stream. Its trash, unless your mostly concerned about style and concept.

This entire paranoia going around is just unhealth for the community over pure specualtions and it not turning out as they wanted it to be is just causing unneeded anger issues.

Nonsense. Again, every other class revealed has more to offer in damage or utility.

There is also talk on Reddit that Holosmith tree may replace tool tree or make a perm place in the meta by taking a place of one of the current Meta trees.

The new spec may do more damage than old Engi builds, but it still doesnt compete with other classes old or new builds. This is the overwhelming opinion of most veteran Engies I’ve seen on Reddit, this official forum, or in-game. Anything Engi can do, other classes can do better, while being more useful to their group. That is a fact.

without a spreadsheet or a screenshot of your dps meter or you know literally anything besides streamers who are just this games mini pop stars peakittening all of the tooltips as quick as they can without also mousing over their gear and then running around in open world pushing all the buttons to have some fun… your comments are kitten.

What’s your thinking on Holo kit engi now? It still seems a little janky, with kits being locked out for 6s after using Holo mode, and kits not building up heat, among other things. Does the extra Burning and damage from Holo skills outweigh the ~2500 dps from Tools?

i need to play it first (tomorrow right), idk how the elite or that photon kit cd specifically works.

if, as the tooltip implies in my mind, lazor leaves an uncomboable fire field that produces tons of burning in a fairly large area, then yes that alone should be worth dropping tools for a condi build. then you tack on photon 4 being a useful condi in the vein of poison dart volley and sword 2 doing anything and the 2 gap closers in places that were previously useless/nonexistent and exploding occasionally and thats bonus. condi wont be all that dependent on using photon unless it can use 4 and generate a little heat.

for power, all i can say is most likely. sword 1 is a power skill at heart and i wish bog otter / others would have also provided a rifle/bomb/nade auto tooltip to compare against, but the quickness on 3 looks really good and sustainable (and fills in gaps at a minimum) and photon has good power damage on 2 and 3 (and 1 can be an explosion, helps a lot too) for heat maintenance, heat also comes with a bunch of personal free might stacking. so.. you have might and quickness and crit chance in a build that likes autoing when the few bigger skills it needs to use are on cd. theres really nothing better unless youre raiding and its all given to you (gl if you pug lol).

but it may still have survival issues compared to other classes. which is why i usually dont bother bringing my engi to fractals these days. youll give up blinds for damage (you dont have to but breakbars, dps.). there arent really good ways to work in a bunch of damage mitigation while keeping dps nearly optimal because kits/specs distribute damage amongst themselves instead of a build coalescing around a single kit/spec. its ok cuz its a design choice, but a 2nd health bar, 8 secs of infinite blocking, 15 secs of evades, being ranged with high base health, etc etc are all stronger and more easily baked into builds for their respective classes in a breakbar environment.

i dont think it looks that janky though. just a more extreme kit engi. i think itll play pretty well. ill try to follow this comment up after the preview. i could be wrong.

Am I the only one who thinks Gleam Saber’s 3s cooldown reduction on sword skills is powerful? Doesn’t this effectively make the 2 and 3 skills a 4 and 6 second cooldown respectively (obviously that depends on you using AA exclusively while they are on cooldown).

Not fully understanding the heat meter mechanic doesn’t help, but am I wrong in thinking this results in 100% quickness uptime? Something is wrong with my logic here.

yeah but rifle is outdated and elite spec weapons usually end up being just plain stronger. even in their worst positions as 2 skill offhands.

gl getting past stability, reflects, evades, and blocks while you cc yourself though. :/

oh i see, but i think the interaction is flawed/unconsidered… either you wont have lasers edge when you explode if you dont take photonic blasting module, or you wont be able to force aed procs. and overheating cant do both self damage and enemy damage. nothing looks beneficial about it.

there will probably be 2 main playstyles from the gm traits and the 3rd trait will be ignored:

  1. maintaining heat at a high level to get more power damage (dissipating heat will still heal you, just a bit less bursty)
  2. generating as much heat as possible as often as possible to get more condi or power damage (will give bursts of healing while you cool, but the trait doesn’t allow passive heat dissipation, only overload dissipation)

this looks good. it looks like it might be limited enough to be not overpowered but still a fun gimmick/bonus for owning HoT.

just think about how often it would actually give you enough of a leg up to guarantee a “win” in most places and i think youll come up pretty short. primarily because you cant glide in territories that arent yours and cant / get kicked off if you try.

ayyy photon forge is a kit its just on the toolbelt so you can be a 6 kit engi now
