league of legends used to do this but moved to just taking the higher rated players rating because of abuse. eventually they even went so far as to restrict your ability to queue far outside of a nearby range to prevent boosting.
is it a geometric average or an arithmetic average? i doubt that the extra power to affect a games outcome by duoing should result in an effective mmr that is lower than the higher players actual mmr in any case.

dying doing what
usually i just swap flamethrower for rocket boots when its time to move. bombs/nades/mortar are enough to kill anything elite or smaller and if you see a champ/legend just put flamethrower back on. i dont really die doing those things unless im soloing a champ.

Whatever you want to call it, I still don’t see the fixes that you claim this non-meta status deserves if Anet balances according to performance like you say they do. Tell me, how long has Engi not been meta?
since the slick shoes nerf a while after raid release.
since then, ele has remained Top Dps Class, other meta classes have more useful buffs, engis old role of vuln and might stacking has still been outdated (since HoT), and fractal pugs have gradually embraced necros more and more because of how easy it is to play and survive on one even though engis many blinds, blasts, and offensive team support are still “better” (especially since the lich and rise nerfs). in open world, people have always chosen more mobile things for map completion and staff guard is the ruler of zergable content (not that engi is bad at it, but hey they buffed staff guard cuz now you can hold down 1 to keep spamming instead of having to push it a bunch). anywhere that you need to break a bar, bring something else: basi venom, electric wyvern, rev staff 5, headbutt + shield bash, continuum split gravity well + shield, flesh golem, shocking aura, and bane signet + banish + spear pull are all easier than engis 10 button combo to shoot off 5 ccs over 7 secs and break more of the bar.
…oh and engi was supposed to be good at cc. LOL.

will it be possible for players to see their mmr at < 40 games played? are we looking at a possible scenario where someone “hides” from the leaderboard by only playing 33 games then comes back at the end of the season and gets 6 or 7 wins (to eat decay) and suddenly pops onto the leaderboard unexpectedly, especially in a high position?

why wouldnt you want to talk about engis distinct lack of group buffs when the pve and wvw metas revolve heavily around sharing your buffs with the maximum amount of people possible because doing so adds more damage than being selfish. why wouldnt you want to talk about the hoops engi has to jump through to get 5 blasts on a fire field while a rev leaves 2 facets active or a warrior pushes 2 every once in a while. how is this irrelevant to the meta. this is exactly why engi gets overlooked. its not because engi is bad, its because few people want to bother with that kind of effort when its so easily subverted by your supposed co-operators and outdone effortlessly and nonunique.

Maybe Obtena wasn’t aware of or active at the time so I forgive him, but the PvE community almost unanimously asked for our elite spec to finally get us away from using kits. Little did we know at the time that not only would we not even use the spec in PvE but we were forced into a build that put even more kits on our bar. The truly sad thing is that ArenaNet was actually successful in getting us away from kits with the scrapper; they just failed at making scrapper worth taking in PvE instances.
the spec was advertised as being pvp oriented cuz engi was already just plain better than many other classes in pve…
this is/was a temporal failure on anets part. there was no way they had time to produce 2 elite specs, theres no way another xpac is going to be released soon, and what they put out for engi was geared heavily towards engis deficiencies without regard to the massive power creep being introduced to every other class. in the end they put a bandaid on it (applied force) and havent touched it since. personally i think it was a mistake to do so and that what they should be doing instead is prioritizing pushing out more elite specs because it was never intended for us to only have access to 1 (just 1 at a time) since they are at a different power level and the next engi elite spec should be more geared towards pve and perhaps applied force should move to that spec instead.

some of us actually do call for nerfs when something is unanimously/nearly considered op. I’d tell you to sift through my post history and check out where I called for nerfs to engi and guard cc, but it’s a long post history.
I actually agree that trying other classes is a solution. the major roadblock to that solution is having played long enough and uncasually enough to have assets to buy new toon slots and instantly create viable, complete armor sets. I’ve done so cuz I haven’t sat on my kitten in game continually being poor, and I’ve also played for over 4 years and done so many fractals that I’ve built about 10 sets of ascended armor while only crafting my first. so when you say to me “just make another toon” I say “yeah good point”. but it’s taken me a mountain of effort to get to where I can answer in that manner, and im sure that to at least some of these engis in here who are glossing over that solution…. it’s not something they’re prepared to do. they don’t have the resources or will to split their investment. and that’s where calling for dev action comes into the picture.

It’s a hard question to be honest; one that I don’t have an answer for. I can’t see how one would use open world content to kitten a class for health to begin with because of two things:
1. I’m not sure there is any criteria that you could establish for that to find an appropriate open world measure. Simple criteria like “DPS” ignore other significant factors, so they don’t work (which explains why meta, to me, is a poor indicator of class health).
2. Even if there is a list of criteria and content that exists that we would agree to as appropriate, it still wouldn’t be sufficient to judge class health because performance is affected by the person playing the class as well.
So you can’t just ask what criteria and content establishes the baseline, you also have to consider the level of player competence to do that. I just can’t see how any objective assessment can do that.
I think that because of the complexity of doing such a thing, we (and Anet) have to fall back on more primitive evaluations like … perhaps having a range of acceptable damage output for given fixed parameters. Or more empirical things, which we do see like when they tweak skills after PVP seasons and such. Anet even tells us as much, like SoI for Mesmers and recent Rev changes. Finally .. if the class skills are maintaining the flavour of the class; for example, Guardian Sword and Scepter getting symbols recently.
I honestly don’t get the mentality that there is something wrong with the class if people don’t want it in teams. Why would anyone conclude it’s a problem with the class? At one point we had an all-Ele meta for dungeons … does that mean all other 7 classes were no good? That was certainly not the case. So why is it the case here that Eng is not a good class because it’s not meta either? That’s just nonsense. IF this is even a problem, it’s not a class issue, it’s a game design issue, and not one that is easily addressed through throwing about class buffs/nerfs either.
first, i recommend taking a look at league of legends patch notes. theyve come a long way since their launch in communicating to players how they analyze problems with champions. now, they put anets patch notes with respect to class balance to shame. glimpses like that into balance and design offer us a starting point for sounding out a foundation upon which to build our own opinions of how balance can be constructed.
second, thats just it. none of this is objective. its very nature is subjective. anet currently does a poor job of reacting to and creating new balance points. their iteration is too slow and paralyzed by the fear of drastic changes in addition to the really really bad rule of never ever reverting changes. always moving forward is one thing, but moving backward by moving forward and then refusing to turn around is just plain dumb. idk if its mismanagement, a lack of skill, disinterest, being understaffed, or something else, but they do not have enough resources allocated to balance to produce something respectable for a competitive, professional community at this time. so we have to work with what we have.
finally, yes i certainly can ask about those criteria. im doing just that. im coming at it from a perspective of doing the same things on many different classes, playing many builds, having some level of mastery over all of them, and deciding for myself which ones are in an acceptable state for those things.
and from my perspective, right now engi is easy and fun in open world.. but not good. engi is tiring but fun in harder pve content… but other classes arent tiring and have unique niches and arent just filler. in wvw, engi doesnt quite have what i want in a roamer and is too selfish for zerging. and in pvp, build diversity is extremely lacking compared to pre-hot, and engi isnt bad and has a high skill floor… but has a fairly low skill ceiling and is hard pressed to actually win any 1v1s.
all of that adds up to “meh” @ engi. and thats unhealthy.

I think the inability to solo champs really doesn’t indicate that a class is incapable and a poorly performing class; that’s as much a function of the build as it is the player. I can say that I have only done that with a MM Necro build which I think only shows that Minion builds are broken IMO. I can’t say if there is an Engi build that doesn’t also solo champs; I’ve never explored that space.
What I am certain of is that the whole question of class balance and performance is way more complex than “it’s not meta”. As Phineas has already pointed out, in his experience, he was bored because he was so successful with the class. So … is that really a not-meta problem … or is Eng just one of those classes that really rewards highly capable players and leaves scrubs behind?
what would you suggest as a class health benchmark for an open world build then? “havent tried it” isnt really constructive here. zergy content gets washed out by having 100 other people healing, buffing, rezzing, and outdpsing you. other harder, more structured content requires a build that isnt so harshly outdpsed for you to complete it in reasonable times and not get kicked by kittenty elitists looking for a reason to kick all noobs.

No, I don’t solo HP champs with this one.
I suppose I have a different definition of robust and fun then. because I’ve done that on at least 3 other classes while at least partially emulating the meta builds (on a budget, typically) and being entirely bad at the classes at the time. and people say you have to be bad at a couple of other classes that I don’t play and am worse than bad at to not be able to do such a thing on those meta builds too, like (power) warrior.
that doesn’t particularly inspire faith in engi from me.

rocket boots used to be unique when it was 1200 range and affected by move speed, but now its just outclassed.
its too bad. i get that the devs dont wanna muck up the game with invisible walls everywhere… but really. make a new type of wall that allows projectiles and targeting to pass but not players. and throw those out liberally. and then let engi have uniqueness.
plus the design philosophy is entirely undercut by allowing gliding. ugh.

tbh when i die to t1 “roamers” its usually because i chased the single extremely tanky or mobile solo player for 5 minutes until he called his guildmates to gank or happened to run into some other 1-5 randoms and i just get overwhelmed. so yeah i die a lot but … well, take that as you will. you wanna call them “strong” or “skilled” or whatever… yeah. thats gotta be it.

I was wondering: I can check with the team, of course, but perhaps the “free play” period was designed to allow people to get into the map, choose their location, and be ready to start a round of songs. If that was eliminated, might there be complaints about how we players are always joining in the middle of a session, which means we’d lose the ability to get maximum rewards? I’m just speculating here, but it crossed my mind.

gonna miss talent that gets things done but some of those names put us in the powercreep kittenhole called HoT and now the leftovers seem to be gradually rolling it back and doing things better so im pretty sure i like whoever hasnt been poached better.

sitting at zero because I got no engi changes I liked to even bother with pvp :I
WTB more base engi buffs and scrapper nerfs because scrapper screwed base engi.
MORE RIFLE BUFFS PLZ and quit nerfing things out of nowhere without any reason to.the rifle change was not a buff, it was more loss of dmg. which was the exact opposite if what they were trying to do (bring it up to par with hammer).
Too true. That Jump Shot change feels like a nerf given how hard it is to land such a long telegraphed skill. Maybe if it was faster or had evades..
Things that were (I think) designed to nerf Scrapper, but ended up killing Base Engi even more:
- Gear Shield 3s->2s – Base Engi needs a long block for defense. It is the only defensive skill in a lot of builds.
- Healing Turret 0.5s->0.75s – Base Engi can no longer rely on HT to go off when cast. There’s a very real risk of it being interrupted or destroyed before it finishes. This hurts Scrapper, yes, but it hurts Base more because of the lack of defensive weapon skills on Rifle/Pistol.
Ultimately though, It’s projectile hate and HoT power creep that are forcing certain playstyles on pvp. It’s far too easy to just sit on point and spam aoe.
Here’s what I see when I play p/p Engi:
- Warrior: Ignores conditions for 30+ seconds + reflects on all blocks. Have to kite the ENTIRE time, but first I have to get them to trigger berserker stance.
- Mesmer: Nearly infinite blocks (which also reflect). Then spiked, then back to the temporary invulnerability… spiked, blocks again… I just avoid mesmers because there’s very little I can do.
the amount of misinformation here is insane. 30+ seconds? where are you getting that? because obviously me playing warrior for several months isnt enough.
2 healing signet activations and zerker stance. it’s not far off actually. and it’s really really annoying with no corruptions.

glicko calculations to predict/assign rating haven’t changed and won’t change unless the glicko dude (or a protege) himself decides it’s time for glicko3.
building a matlab/python/r script or an excel spreadsheet is perfectly doable with what’s on the wiki, just kind of a big side project and means you aren’t playing the game.

it isnt just grenades. any kit based build is practically kitten without a gaming mouse. the reason is you gotta have quick and frequent switches, so its either rebind 6-0 to convenient spots for your left hand and overwork it, or put them on a gaming mouse and make your right hand actually do something.

i dont see the engi changes as doing a whole lot for core engi. still gonna be only hammer scrapper for power builds, and the problem with condi builds is that they dont have enough sustain to be a bruiser or enough mobility to be an assassin (when other things have teles)… which leaves them as little more than a cute trick that can potentially snowball off a surprise but strictly inferior to power scrapper.

I can for see one massive problem with this system so far with out playing it.
If a good player where to throw there 10 placement matches, they would be placed with the new players, then they could just farm wins and rewards for fun. What’s the incentive not to do this? You know there will be people out there who will do this if there is more to be gained from doing it.
There are three possible outcomes:
- You throw your matches and then get yourself stuck in glicko hell.
- You throw your matches and actually start playing poorly like continuing to make a funny face when your mom told you not to.
- You throw your matches and then as you win, your rating shoots right back up again.
Ok cool. So someone who throws matches to be placed will find that they will climb quickly then? I’m just trying to understand what sage guards there are, last thing I want are placement games I lose because people want to throw them for “loot farming scrubs” or what ever they will call it.
the guard is your rating itself. when your performance is unexpected, your deviation goes up, making you more mobile across strata. if you throw matches, your deviation goes up, because you “shouldnt” be losing those. then either you bounce back quickly (bullet 3) or you resettle in a new spot due to your inability to carry (1) or personal sucking (2).
when you throw your placement matches, youre still spending time not getting the loot you should be getting, and if you hadnt thrown you would have gotten the “easy loot” you will get for the “easy games” youre putting yourself into later. and what you miss out on is the experience of fighting people closer to your skill level, which is what really helps you improve as a player so you can win more matches in the future.
throwing will only hurt you.

power engi is great for casual pve
the flamethrower camping build is quite strong as long as you keep it casual and dont try to do things like solo HoT hero points or fractals or raids. its great for map completion, meta events, world bosses, farming…

mixing these stats isn’t a good idea because engi weapon sets (hammer/pp), runes, and traits are very dedicated to single stat types. you’ll feel like 50% of a character.
it’s a different matter when you mix in survivability to muddy your stats, cuz you still dedicate yourself fully to either condI or power, not hybrid, so you dont lose as much build synergy.

Exactly, going full viper will overstack the condi duration, and that missed condi duration is better spended in pushing more your condi damage, hence, the sinister stats in the shoulder and in one ring.
has the source of your math taken the extra duration on poison and confusion and the slightly more intangible soft cc duration into consideration

as in, a rifle build without multiple kits is seriously lacking in oomph, to the point where its a deficient build. that’s not true of hammer.
that’s something I would like to see change too. one way or another. my predator feels neglected these days and I’d like to have reason to use it more, although I’m more in favor of HoT nerfs than core buffs.
