Here is a guide from another game. But it apply to GW2 too.

The Gold/Gem ratio

The rate isn’t the same because the exchange takes 15% of gold going into and out of the exchange. That’s why the Gem->Gold is 72.25%, or 85% x 85%, of the Gold ->Gem rate. It discourages market players from playing the exchange over the short term.

and Anet just want your money. Having a different price means people get less from buying gold, so they’ll have to spend more real cash.

Quite honestly, some people want Anet to look good, so they come up with various reason(stop inflation, stop people from flipping). But the button line is Anet want your money, and people are complaining they have to pay real money or grind more gold.

You make it seem like ANet takes your fake gold to fill their fake gold vaults so they can go fake swimming in it during lunch.

The exchange is a solution to the problem of setting up an official $$ to gold supplier without the problems of creating gold from nothing for those willing to pay. The “cost” to ANet is selling cash shop items for free to players willing to fund the RMT setup. It also allows players to buy items from the gem shop who would never if it wasn’t free. The hope being that once accustomed to it, a situation will come up that a player would finally drop some cash for once to get something they want.

A cash shop business model doesn’t require a lot of players paying, just those who can and don’t have some reason not to.

I don’t even know what you are talking in your first sentence.

You are the one who says Anet purposely make exchange low to get people hook to the game first.

I’m not sure what I said wrong. Anet want players money, and player are complaining they have to pay money or grind more gold. (at least some players are complaining)

What's happening to gems?

in Black Lion Trading Co

laokoko.7403

and that all Anet can control is when they put highly desirable items into the Gem Shop.

Basically you says, Anet purposely put exchange low to get people hook and they have no control of gem price? (beside putting desirable item in).

Seriously I dont’ know what is happening in that black box. But no ones knows beside Anet.

That is not to say they keep the gem price high. Obviously there must be some magical number which will maximize Anet profit, because high exchange rate also mean people trying to buy in game gold will need to spend less real world cash.

But I dont’ think anyone knows what’s going on beside Anet. But quite honestly, casual playing making 3 gold per hour isn’t difficult. And playing 30 hours you have enough money to buy those 800 gem stuff in the cash shop. Most people desperate for gold are probably those after super expensive skins(eg legendary).

That being said, with those number of champ bag, you made enough money for 1 or 2 precursor.

I think more than anything, it showed precursor isn’t that difficult to get. Someone made enough money to buy 2 precursor in 20 days(playing like 10 hours a day).

I have similar problem. I did karaka queen on my guardian, i’ll get the ground chest and bonus chest. If I try karaka queen again, on my warrior, I won’t get the ground chest.

And base on what people says bonus chest is account bound but ground chest is character bound.

Base on what people says, the problem might be diminishing return, dont’ log your character out at the event area, and see if that helps. If you check older post, the problem have been there for a year.

Inflation

laokoko.7403

Wow. Just wow. After reading this entire thread I’m just amazed. This is probably the worst thread that I has seen that has so many uninformed responses trying to pose as informed, so many responses committing logical fallacies such as distorting someone’s responses or diverting attention to some nonsensical point, responses from people grasping at real life scenarios and distorting them to fit their viewpoint and this game, responses from people using said scenarios who know absolutely nothing about what’s going on, and so on. It’s just ridiculous. This is probably not the best way to start a post but I’m just so flabbergasted.

John Smith was not incorrect when he stated that some people should learn a bit more about economics. You cannot have a discussion about economic topics unless you have a foundation. This thread is evidence to that fact. A very basic understanding of economics would have shown that inflation is not occurring as that term is rampantly being misused.

Inflation is caused by an increase in the money supply (there’s more to it but since most people do not know what inflation is, I won’t overly complicate this). If everyone in the game received 1,000 gold one day, you’d have inflation. Inflation also affects the economy as a whole and not just specific goods. A basic understanding of the definition would lead you to understand that it’s not a inflation issue but rather a supply and demand issue. I believe one of the first responses pointed this out and John Smith was probably alluding to this.

Isolated price fluctuations in some goods are most likely caused by supply and demand changes. It’s not 100% because like most things, there are always exceptions. An increase in price is caused by an increase in demand, decrease in supply, or some combination of the two. Demand has normally been very high for these items and always exceeded supply. Supply has fluctuated since game release.

What could be causing the changes in supply? Well take a look at all of the previous updates. Notice how many champ farm locations were nerfed? Also notice the lull in content that provides loot? There’s also the drop in players to play ESO, Wildstar, taking a break, and so on. If course that is more observational as I don’t have access to player data.

I also want to point out from another thread that the sell price does not always mean it’s the real price of the item. There was a thread about TP manipulation of precursors where John Smith provided us data for the last 50 or so transactions. If someone wants to provide a link to it then please do as I honestly don’t care enough to search for that thread. The prices people were purchasing precursors for was much lower than what the sell price was. So also don’t dismiss an increase of precursor prices as being caused by overly ambitious sellers.

TL/DR;

Inflation is caused by changes in the money supply, not prices.
Demand and supply likely the reason.
Be aware of TP sellers artificially inflating the sell prices.

I like the “do you have an understanding of economy attitude”.

If you have an understanding of society and mmorpg. We whine and complain about grind and unevenly wealth distribution. “just like in real life too”

well the pool people complain, the rich people just laugh at them. The government keep telling people they are doing a great job. And they do what best for the economy, which really just mean people in power trying to get rich so they don’t care about poor people and wealth distribution.

The moral of story, is people complain. You think there is something wrong with people complaining?

well, there is probably nothing wrong with the economy, but there sure is nothing wrong with people complaining. Because you know… every single labor force complain about their minimum wages. Even people in Sweden complain about it.

So technically I didnt’ loss money, but if I bought it during the Lion’s Arch invasion, I would have made thousands of gold instead of barely breaking even.

So basically you want to join the most popular world all the time? Just stay on the world your on and try to beat the boss.

In most cases people are trying to join a friend or specific community so it’s not necessarily a popularity contest.

I think the reality is “most” people are joining friend or community because it is the popular “higher success rate” map.

Obviously there are those that purely just do it because they want to play with friend, but majority are there just because of say “gold map pavilion”.

Of course, but joining a popular map should not be seen as something negative. Leadership and organization is not something that’s always readily available. This explains why taxi’s are often used because there are too many players out there who just follow the zerg without any real thought behind it. Without guidance it’s just a recipe for disaster.

Either way a queue system benefits not only the popular maps. Queues can give players useful information whether or not they will be able to join their party members. If the queue line is too long it could trigger players to organize something themselves.

I dont’ have a problem with queues.

I’m just wondering if with the district system, people will mostly try to join the 100% maps since they are most likely the organized maps.

So in the end those organized guilds will have trouble getting their people in. Kind of like what happened with JQ and BlackGate before.

My question is should “other people” be allowed to queue or just those have friends or guildmates in the orginal map.

You will probably have a harder time to get in if there are other people fighting for your spot.

ANet does not want you passing your Fine/Rare/Exotic gear to different characters. Call it an incentive to craft/farm, a trading post stimulus, a time/gold sink — whatever hidden purpose character-binding gear serves, I don’t know what you think has happened to make it stop serving that purpose. In fact, I don’t see any reasons in this thread so far, why ANet should go out of its way to eliminate it.

Can anyone explain how this would make the game better, instead of just asserting that you want it?

What does it matter anyway, those are only a few silver to a few gold.

The problem is really bag and bank space.

I dont think you understand, anet is a company, they want to make money, you buy bank slot, they make money.

I have 58 character slot, and full bank.

The problem is say my warrior is having 4-5 set of exotic gear, and a bunch of exotic weapons. I have no choice but to store things in my bag or bank.

If I can move over the gear to another character it’ll save me some trouble, because bank and bag space is much more precious.

I think just speculator guessing since the drop rate is low, it’ll keep going up. So they try to buyout everything. Maybe they are guessing those skins will become the next jetpack.

When it comes to rare skins, some players are impatient and sell to soon. Then a few months late the prices increase again. People are just dumping their supplies thinking this is the highest price the item will be. The supply is about to become very limited after the next season starts.

There is always the possibility Anet will release the item again. Judging by the track record recently, seemed like it became the norm.

I know they do what they must to get money but isn’t it to close to normal political way of lying without laying?

The exchange rate is constantly in flux. Any number that gets put down in writing will be wrong by the time you read it simply because it has changed.

It wasn’t a lie when it was written, it just isn’t particularly helpful because it is instantly obsolete.

It’s problem b/c this game is known for having poor reward structure. JS doesn’t seem to understand why that is so (which is evident when he circles back to the macro economy in every discussion regarding rewards).

Anet acknowledges there is a reward issue. That is why they are “working” on it.

This game is accused of having a “poor reward structure” by players who don’t understand that it has the best reward structure.

In most MMOs, you have to grind Activity A to get Reward A. Doesn’t matter if you hate Activity A, you still have to grind it for hours upon hours to get Reward A. If you also want Reward B, then you have to grind hours upon hours of Activity B, which you can’t do at the same time as Activity A.

In GW2, you have ability to only play the content you like and buy the rewards you like. This means that I can do Activity B and get Reward A and Reward B and never have to touch Activity A.

The reward system in this game is superior to other MMOs because it lets you choose what content you want to do instead of shackling you to a grind you don’t enjoy.

Okay then why is GW2 known for poor rewards and the others are not?

A perception arises (at least for me) participating in certain content for a certain reward verses participating in any content for the same reward. Players are well known to try and become efficient as possible in their endeavors. This results in the former certain grind content for a certain reward being somewhat acceptable. The latter results in most content being inefficient grind since all content leads to the same objective. So most all content feels unrewarding since players know they could be more efficient doing something else with their time.

You have to realize there is only 1 tier, there are infinite tiers other games use.

all GW2 can do is spam us with skins. And if they give us skin which is too good, no one will buy the one from gem store. And if everyone have a legendary, they wont’ buy the one in gem store too.

and the game design structure, at this moment, it look like the focus is on living story, kind of like giving us some extended conent every few weeks(kind of like watching tv series, but not their core game.)

well he’s not a game designer, he’s the economist leader. You can try blaming those game developer who never bother to post any more.

I dont’ know why everyone thinks JS said anything though, because clearly all he’s response is just 1 or 2 sentence not explaining anything and tell us we (need to learn economy).

and gold is used as a reward because “they want you to buy gem”. I like how everyone trying to make it sound like they want players to play however they want to gain their rewards. Because by the look of it, karma, empyreal fragment and dragonite ore, fractal skin, they surely don’t want us to play that way. This game’s economy is more and more like real life.

If you mean gold only, that probably more related to M1 and M2.

If price really rise that much, it’ll be like the orichalcum/ancient wood right after the ascended gear introduction, harvester making a killing.

I just think it is much easier for silver to double in price because even if silver double in price, the miner still wont’ be bother to waste time mining them. But platinum, people are already harvesting them for money, platinum are 1.8 right now. If it go up say 50% that’s 2.7 silver, there will be a lot more miner.

That being said, no one actually knows if silver demand will rise that much.

Anet put temporary economy changes every patch. Hard for it to stop.

at least people don’t need to complain about the millions of t5 leather on the TP for a few month.

we can probably do another discussion called there is no one manipulation precursor price. Even though they failed.

I dont’ know what is going on for dusk, but mithril price drops a bit.

I really just look at it as for a day or two mystic forge gambler stops gambling because of the mithril and wood price jump.

I don’t really know about fancy indicators and bizarre definitions, but 12 months ago if you could make 5g/hr you were at the top of the farming game, and doing well.

Today you would get laughed at if you were only making 5g/hr and considered that good. Usually people expect 8-10g/hr playing the game now and some people claim up to 15g/hr. So the amount of money you make is certainly much higher then it was a year ago, not sure what that says about inflation.

That in and of itself says nothing about inflation, but rather the rate at which gold supply enters the economy.

Gold supply can impact inflation if it is not offset with appropriate gold sinks.

I think what he’s saying is why does it matter if there’s inflation. Dusk sell for 700 but everyone makes 5 gold/hour. Dusk sell for 1400 but everyone makes 10 gold/hour. That’s the same thing right?

Not taking account into item hoarder or gold hoarder, the amount of time to acquire an item is the same.

you probably need to be actively farming to make 8-10g/hr.

that being said, all people do is farm in this game, so that is probably correct.

and there is actually the people who dont farm, so they spend their time complaining on the forum and talk about he manifesto “oh we don’t want you to swing your sword 1000 times to….”
