No, what the Dailies did before was incentivize the players to play the game, and gain rewards from playing it their own way (reviving here, harvesting there, participating over here, etc..) Now what ANet has done is change that to a handout for logging in (which may or may not be good), and making you jump through an approved highly restrictive list of ANet checklist tasks. Now it’s “Waypoint here, to do # of A,B,C. Now you have to Waypoint there to do # of D,E,F.” Seen this Vista before? ANet’s answer now is "Tough, see it again and “experience something new”"

Do you not see the absurdity of claiming that dailies incentivized people to do things that they were already doing?

They don’t want you to get rewards for doing what you always do. They want you to have to do something beyond that to get extra rewards.

The enjoyment of doing things you enjoy is the incentive for doing things you enjoy. It’s things that you don’t enjoy that need an incentive added.

You completely miss the point. The point is that BEFORE the change, we got our Dailys done from normally playing the game. Gathering resources wherever we wanted, in whatever zone we wanted, completing events in whatever area we happened to be in. They weren’t a Checklist A,B,C,D that forced us to hop-skip and jump all over the frickn’ map. If I choose to gather resources, what should it matter that I do it in areas A,B and C and not in ANet’s chosen area X?

I could give a frick whether or not it takes me 2 minutes to get the new Daylie’s done. It’s forcing me out of what had been an organic, natural way to play to jump through ANet’s arbitrary approved checklist.

Before the change, dailies, by your own admission, were broken since they did not incentivize you to do things you didn’t normally do.

After the change, you now have to do non-normal things in order to get some chests and AP. If you don’t want the chests and AP, you don’t have to do anything.

I’m perfectly fine with people who complete Ascalon Logger getting a bunch of extra wood (and even a bit of experience). I can get this wood elsewhere.

I’m perfectly fine with people who complete Queensdale Zerger getting some centaur trash, or greens, or even some [Delicious Boar Steak] (+10% movement speed when in a zerg; +10% experience from events). I can get these greens elsewhere.

What I am not fine with is stuffing “the most powerful rewards” – AP, which cannot be unlimitedly grinded unlike barracudas in Southsun, – into such events and forcing me to click vistas and do Fractals 11 instead of doing Fractals 50, Tequatl or Winter Wonderland.

In a game without infinite vertical progression, skins are the powerful reward. As well as gemstore stuff which comes out of AP chests (like Total Makeover Kits or +20 levels scrolls).

Ok, I see your problem. You’ve incorrectly determined that the “Play How I Want” concept applies to cosmetic skins.

The quote meant that you can achieve top level/competitive stat gear without having to do content you don’t like.

Now that I’ve cleared up the misconception, you may want to reevaluate your entire post.

Before If lets say i wanted to play a while in ascalon, np I could do that and simultaneously get the daily done. As opposed to now where I have to camp bosses, warp to other maps, do vistas, use the MF, PvP, WvW, etc.

How is that an improvement? (other than free AP) they broke something that was unbroken. frankly, the time could have been better spent fixing real issues.

I think you’re the one who is missing something here.
Dailies were not intended to be a “Login, Insert Reward” feature. They were intended to be the incentive for players to actually go out and do things.

The previous implementation failed miserably, because, as you have said, they were very simple to complete and happened naturally (requiring no effort).

This implementation actually rewards you for getting out of your rut and doing something you wouldn’t have normally done.

You don’t HAVE to do anything you don’t want to, these are just a carrot on a stick for people who are willing to do something they wouldn’t normally do.

If you really don’t want to do these things, DON’T!!!!!

I can see how misinterpreting/misquoting “Play How You Want” would lead you to believe that it is gone.

Especially since your fanciful made up version of the concept never existed.

It’s “Play how you want to get the best gear”, not “Play how you want and have all forms of rewards dumped into your character’s inventory”.

The point of dailies is not to dump items into your inventory. The point of dailies is to incentivize players to participate in specific content.

By trimming down what can be done in PvE, you create the impetus for players to participate in WvW or PvP.

No you dont. What you ACTUALLY do is p-off your pve playerbase. I’ll stop logging in at all before I play PvP or WvW. That junk is just an excuse for lack of content so far as I’m concerned.

No, I disagree with you.I like the new direction and 100% support it.

The old system had 2 PvP, 2WvW and 6 PvE ones.
Now it’s 4 of each.
PvE players had a lot more choices… People in PvP and WvW had none. Now it’s 4 of each which brings the different mode on more equal footing.

It’s not a good idea in general. While I can tolerate this new system some of my friends that played this game that are thinking of coming back to it told me they literally won’t be coming back because of this.

The new system while maybe granting more aps on average does make it harder and take longer for those focused exclusively on pve to get the daily reward.

Anyone who told you that they would not come back to a game over something as absurdly silly as this was never planning on coming back and is simply using an absurdly silly excuse.

If dailies were a job before this new system then what are they now? What use to take 20 minutes for me has become a job today with this new system in place. I am willing to give it a chance but I see fewer laurels in my future as it stands now. I do think this system is a little pvp and wvw heavy for those that play only pve. As a pve person you will have to got out of your way for the completion. Will it cause me to quit or get emotional? Not even. I do want to express that not all change has been good for this game though and I think this is one of those changes in my opinion. The rule KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) applies here as well as ‘if ain’t broke don’t fix it’.

You no longer earn Laurels from the daily.
They are given to you simply by logging in.

Huh. Can you tell me where ANET made this statement about the “point” of dailies?

I understand that not everyone has a background in business or marketing, which is why I felt the need to explain the point of the daily concept.

There won’t be a quote from ArenaNet, because they don’t need/want to say it. They want to advertise it to you from your perspective, not theirs.

I’ve simply provided you with their perspective as well.

It is the same perspective shared by every single business on the planet. It’s a universal truth of commerce, which is why you won’t see a quote from any business explaining it. For them, that would be like making a statement that 1 = 1.

If you’re intent on only doing PvE, then you’ve got a self-imposed restriction that is making it more difficult than it needs to be for you.

I’m not going to speak against this new system until I tried it. However, I never agree with the content cross references.

It’s a bit like telling a MYST player to go play Call of Duty because it builds character.

Not everyone feels like doing competitive things every day. I personally enjoy PvP more when I don’t have to do it.

The thing is though, the entire point of dailies is to incentivize players to participate in different content. They weren’t very good at doing that before, so this change improves their ability to perform their purpose at the cost of removing the ease at which they were formerly completed (the ease which was the main reason they didn’t achieve their purpose).

The point of dailies is to get players to do thing they wouldn’t otherwise do.

They are supposed to be a carrot on a stick that leads you to do WvW, PvP, or PvE.

ArenaNet kind of screwed up with the earlier implementation by making it far too simple to get the dailies done without ever leaving your comfort zone.

This change finally fixes dailies and makes them a proper incentive for players to expand their horizons.

It’s a good change overall, which will unfortunately cause a lot of short term anger as players realize that ArenaNet will no longer be placing the carrot directly into their mouths for them.

Add more options!

It’s a good change.
It rewards people who enjoy all areas of content, incentivizes players to try other forms of content, and is possible for people who refuse to expand their horizons.

If you’re intent on only doing PvE, then you’ve got a self-imposed restriction that is making it more difficult than it needs to be for you.

Salvage or Sell? (Newbie Q)

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

Why forging? Forging is terrible. It’s only worth it if the weapon is less than 1/16 of the value of the average result of the higher tier. (Why? For every 16 weapons, you get an expectation of 1 of the higher tier back, assuming a 20% success rate. Note this includes getting back the same tier on failure — 5 rounds takes 20 but gives 4 of same and 1 upgrade)

The biggest advantage of converting your blues and greens into rares is that rares sell almost instantly whereas blues and greens can take a VERY long time to sell, depending on the item.

As they are relatively valueless on their own and are a slow moving market, it is better to convert them into a high value, fast moving product.

Plus you may get lucky and score a Greatsword, Dagger, Staff, or Sword which would sell for significantly more than the sum of all the blues and greens used to make it.

I don’t know whether this question has already been asked, but anyways:

There are surely a lot of “historic” items offered on the TP as well as there are historic buy requests, by that I mean transactions requested by players who have not been active in this game for a long time.

Do you think that there should be a maximum time for buy or sell requests to be active in the TP before they expire and are deactivated (being no longer usable), because if they are there for so long they do no longer reflect the current state of the economy anyways?

John has previously addressed this issue. Basically, the Trading Post is a set of offers, thus they should only “expire” when YOU decide to cancel it (it’s not an auction house).

Additionally, having an expire function would cause market inefficiencies and huge price swings.

The only way you can successfully profit off of a buy/relist scheme is if it is an incredibly low volume/high speed/low cost market.

You need to be able to recoup your buyout costs on the first few sales before anyone undercuts you, which isn’t possible in nearly all markets.

Step 1, buy all of an item with a limited quantity.
Step 2, relist all of said item for 800x the price you bought them for.

Step 3, more of that item is listed within 30 minutes, forcing you to eat massive losses in order to unload your product.

The majority of supply is not on the TP, but in banks. When people see the price jump they will quickly swarm the market with undercuts and you will lose your investment.

So are Carrier Pigeons =/= Pigeons because they are extinct?
Are Dinosaurs not real simply because they are all dead?

The fact that content was present and is no longer present does not change the fact that the content was present. It is, therefore, content.

It is simply content that means nothing to you because you didn’t get to experience it.

GW2 released with more “content” than WoW did, cost less (or the same, my memory is fuzzy on this point) to buy than WoW did, and has no monthly subscription.

Comparing the number of items added since launch is going to give you a really nice set of pointless data, as it doesn’t reflect the reality of the situation (which is that there can be no apples to apples comparison and such attempts are meaningless).

If WoW was really better at delivering what the lying players wanted, they would be playing WoW instead of posting on the GW2 forums.

This "Meta" has to end

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

There will always be a meta, and it will always be the setup that has the best DPS.

I think the problem here is that the stat allocations on gear in this game allows for a MASSIVE DPS range, with Berserker gear being substantially better than all but 1-2 other sets.

If it was my game balance, I’d have designed gear to only have 2 offensive stat slots and 1 defensive/utility slot, thereby shrinking the range of possible DPS scenarios which would indirectly improve the value of the non-meta gear sets.

You’d still have a meta set, but the gap between it and the worst set would be significantly lessened to the point where a lot of these threads would be irrelevant.

Paid Expansion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

Expansions are high cost-high risk-medium reward.
Gem store is low cost-low risk-high reward.

For these reasons, an expansion is not likely.

I’ve said it before, but I think that this argument is fairly irrelevant.

As a new expansion (featuring, for the sake of the conversation, a new continent, classes, races, etc) would not only, as Galen said, bump the revenue of the Gem Store by bringing back old players, but would also open up a whole range of possible new items for the store.

Or it would not, and thus cost a ton of resources that result in a net loss.

Having an expansion does not guarantee that old players will buy it, nor does it guarantee that new players will buy in.

That’s why it is a high-risk option. You are committing a LOT of resources to something that can very easily flop hard. Gem store is safe. It takes very little resources to add new content so if they flop you aren’t losing much money.

I did an apples to apples comparison. Do you see new content to the extent of Guild Wars 1 or at pace with Guild Wars 1? I’d quiet whether or not you were paid to ask that question of intentionally limiting it because very seriously, I can do a one to one comparison. And as a matter of fact, I did. Guild Wars 1 released as Prophecies. It is the map we are currently playing in by and large. Then came Factions. Do you see Cantha on the map? I don’t. Do you see Elona on the map? I don’t. Do you see the variety and quantity of skills and character builds we had in Guild Wars 1? I don’t. So no, I made my post to address these questions. If you feel I didn’t speak to enough things lacking or found go make your own post and try not to troll others.

Finally, all this is subject to change at any time because we are always working on improving the resources that are available to us. I’m not going to say that we will never restore guild banks, nor will I promise that we’ll be able to do it in the future, but I hope this post helps everyone to understand a little bit why we are currently not restoring guild banks.

I am personally wondering if it’s too hard just to make items guildbound. I have had banners for as long as I know that I will never get any use of, and therefore could pass on to the guild for anyone to use. With guildbound food, members can withdraw and consume it normally, but not be allowed to trade it (like it’s soulbound). Then there should be a maximum withdrawing limit (10 pieces of something per day, for example) before the leader recieves a mail and have to approve it manually.

Is this a stupid idea? I mean, this means that anything put in the guild bank will automatically be bound to the guild. Which of course means that the guild bank can’t be used as a personal storage bank, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be something like that from the very beginning.

And yes, sorry for the bump. Just got into a discussion with a friend about this, and didn’t want to start a new thread about the same subject.

I think that such a feature should be an option that the guild leader turns on. Some people have personal guilds where they store excess materials until they are ready to sell them. Those people would obviously not want to guildbind things.

For actual guilds though, guildbinding is a great idea.

Unless you’re willing to bankroll the salary of an employee to sit there and wait for you to call them, waiting on a ticket is the way it has to be done.

This isn’t a restaurant where there is 1 employee for every 5-10 customers. This is a B2P MMO where you’ve got a handful of support staff dealing with tickets from hundreds of thousands to millions of customers.

Considering the scale, 72 hours is more than reasonable.
