I kind of agree with you about the old system of influence, whereby you gain it for doing certain tasks around the world and that influence was spent to active boost for your guild. With the new system sadly there is really no real difference between guilds anymore and guilds have nothing unique to market themselves on, for the simple fact that once you fully upgrade your guild hall you gain all the same benefits as any other guild, making it very difficult to market your guild… there needs to be some freedom put back into the game where guilds are concerned.

I do agree with that sentiment, but I don’t think influence was that great a system for distinguishing your guild’s achievements either. There are plenty of guilds that have distinguished themselves by their actions instead of guild hall/wealth/other game statistic; a few off the top of my head – [TTS] and [EVOS] for large group content, [KING] and [DnT] for small group content, [SAND] for specialized DT runs, an AB multi-map guild whose name escapes me, the various WvW guilds on T1 servers, etc. You just need to be good at what you do, and word of mouth eventually spreads your fame.

Sadly the OP lost me with the suggestion of Weapons Broken beyond repair… That is a rather bold statement to make. I put this to you. Can you imagine putting all that money and effort into a precursor collection and then throwing A LOT more time and money into making a legendary only to later have that legendary weapon break beyond repair… we are talking over 1,000 gold… Gone! Just like that!

That’s one of the sandbox-leaning mechanics I alluded to in my prior post, which is out of character within GW2’s themepark philosophy.

It was a sand-box-GW2-Theme park game. Anet targeted player who was looking for that. Because GW2 was made like that. We were new community with our own game. There was no theme-park WoW-esque experience.
-WoW-esque, WoW-ish it means K.I.A. for any game except WoW.
-(A TP that didn’t show us all the other offers out there and constantly choked.) Out where, other games, WoW?
-BLTC could sell me a wallet, wardrobe…
-“A wonky defiance system that most people couldn’t understand…” -Was not WoW-esquent??? It looks like WoW players have something to do with GW2.

I think you misunderstand the themepark vs sandbox game… its got nothing to do with combat systems. They are both sub-genres of MMOs. An analogy is when you go on vacation, you can either go camping (sandbox) or to Disneyland (themepark).

When you go to Disneyland, you do what Disneyland offers and nothing more… i.e. rides and attractions. When you’re camping, you make your own fun… fishing, hiking, reading, bird-watching, whatever you want. In a themepark game, you’re role is always a “questing adventurer”… kill rats for farmers, explore dungeons, save the world. In a sandbox game, you can still be the questing adventurer, but you can just as easily say “f-you farmer, I’m going to be a trader/farmer/bandit”. GW2 motto of “play the way you want” is actually more like “play the adventurer the way you want”.

Another hallmark of sandbox games is they expose you to the mundane tasks of life, whereas a themepark game glosses over those aspects for convenience/pacing reasons. Going back to the analogy: When you’re at Disneyland you eat burgers at the diner, stay at the resort and have clean restrooms. When you’re camping, you cook your own food, pitch you tent, poop behind a bush. In the themepark, your character doesn’t need sustenance or shelter, can fast travel, trades by opening a TP/AH window, death has few penalties. In the sandbox, your character can get hungry and cold, has to walk everywhere, trades by pulling his cart from city to city, and death is punishing.

Obviously things aren’t completely black and white… themepark games can have sandbox elements and vice versa, but GW2, ESO, FF14 and most MMOs are very much themepark games. I say they are WoW-esque because WoW is THE big kahuna themepark MMO. Sandbox MMOs are rarer… SWG and Eve Online are the only ones that come to mind. Most modern MMO players, myself included, prefer the themepark game, hence it’s popularity.

A number of your suggestions tend towards the sandbox side of the spectrum, hence my opinion that they would never be implemented in GW2 and why you may enjoy a themepark MMO with heavy sandbox elements, i.e. BDO.

I got mine by getting onto a fresh map where the event hasn’t started. Then I just waited til the NPCs spawned and were ready to go, yelled out on map chat, and escorted them all the way to the door.

I’m not sure if it bugs because the NPCs get downed, or gets into combat with the wrong mob, or just got delayed too much on their journey. Myself and a couple other randoms players were able to make sure none of those things happened.

… awesome!!!

Are you sure you needed to remake it? I’ve always had my collection items unlock automatically even if the original item was gone. Definitely was the case when I did the daredevil staff… I had discarded that mystic staff ages ago. Only part that wouldn’t do that was the adventure chest.

Sounds like you want a more sandbox-like game. GW2 is a more theme-park WoW-esque experience… I doubt we’d ever get any of your suggestions because that was never the player type Anet were targeting.

Maybe try Black Desert Online… it’s a pity it’s probably going the way of Blade and Soul and Arch Age; judging from the recent uproar regarding recent changes to their trading/monetization system.

Is it GW2 that crashes, or does your windows crash too?

If you have an integrated GPU on your processor, try use that and see if the crashes still happen.

You were right to try a new PSU, its a fairly common cause of random crashes. Another source of random crashes is dying RAM. You can still boot, but anytime to stress it out, it freaks. For that, if you have 2 sticks, you can remove one at a time and see if it is stable. It’ll be incredibly unlucky for both sticks to go bad at once.

It might limit creativity your right, but remember they can always add other dilemma surrounding the rise of the elder dragons, to introduce a sense of the world slowly falling apart as you try to juggle responsibilities?? I mean of course the elder dragons are our main priority, but maybe we will have to try to keep riots from breaking out etc. as magic slowly fades from the world?? I don’t know its just a thought…

That sounds like an apocalypse/survival-horror game… Anet, make it happen!

Input on 8/23 Roll-back

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

Before a patch is implemented, a backup should be created. In case the patch causes problems, the backup should replace the latest version. This should be possible to do pretty quickly since it is just a “replace”-command. The system must be made ready for the replacement before. Then, the downtime of the game would decrease.

That’s exactly what a roll-back is. They had a backup just before the patch went live and they reverted back to it cos they discovered there was no other way to fix all the character records that were corrupted. ~12 hours lost, which is peanuts in a game that hasn’t had much downtime since launch.

When it comes to the communication of the problem, you quickly worte a message here in the forum. I would also make sure (as a standard procedure for this case) to direct the player to the main plattform through which you would like to communicate. This can be e.g. your support website (as this link is already in the error message). Please also make sure to communicate, when the problems are solved. I sat yesterday and refreshed the News-section of the forum. Until now, there is no information about the game being online again. I know, you communicate through multiple plattforms. However, you should think about where the main information should flow through (e.g. the support website) and communicate it accordingly.

Communication was actually very good during the outage. Websites and forums aren’t a good way to communicate if you want small frequent updates… they are much better suited for major updates with lots of detail. I was using Twitter to follow the developments and it was great. Not sure how the Facebook and Reddit updates went.

During crisis like that, communication is secondary to fixing the issue and getting servers up… despite that many of us feel Anet did very well there. This is even when compared to other MMOs (Ever sit through WoW maintenance day? In vanilla at least, that was a regular server downtime every 1-2 weeks and near complete incommunicado from Bliz)

Next time when they post updates about the situation they should avoid using morning, because morning in Europe and in USA are not in the same time and can cause confusion, like making an european understand he will be rollback to European morning not USA morning.

If it was only about soulbound items to the wrong character I don’t understand why they didn’t changed the state of those items to account bound + soulbound when used (like the exotics you drop from big chest after you finish a fractal). They could had make the unequip function soulbound the items (assuming they would had went for change all soulbound items to account bound + soulbound when used and not filter the items you already had on you).

I don’t see why items that were required for quests that are soulbound when you get them would had stop working (like the stuff you need to do the event in Airport in EotM). Anyway a drop down option to soulbound the item that was account bound + soulbound on use would had fixed it.

Yes… making all the soul bound items account bound IS an option, but is it the BEST option?

Look at is this way… the item ownership system is a fundamental system in any game, especially MMOs. If you were to change any fundamental system would you not want to plan it out carefully, prototype it on a controlled server and QA the crap out of it? That’s a job that requires weeks, if not months, when you have a game as large as a MMO. Rush it, and you’re almost certainly cause worse bugs. Do it properly, and you’ll be lucky if you have any player-base remaining after your weeks of down-time.

It would be a lot more elegant to fix the problem without a server roll-back, but we can only trust Anet when they say it was the only option. After all, who knows the GW2 source code best? A forum warrior like you and me? Or Anet’s programmers who have been working on it for the last 4+ years?

The dust has barely settled, I think it’s a bit premature to go huffing and puffing about compensation. Let Anet sort out the important things… I don’t know, like making sure the servers are stable and there are no other side effects of the roll back.

It is a shame that everyone lost half a day in gameplay, but whatever criticism you have of Anet, their transparency is stellar (look at thier twitter feed) and if you were to crucify everyone who makes a mistake, well, we’d have a lot of crucifed people in the world.

Finally, try keep a sense of perspective. It’s just a game and whether or not you stay in GW2, you’ll get over it. If you ever want to know what a real mistake is, I suggest talking to a pilot, police officer, construction engineer or doctor.

Expansion 2 speculation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

Just a bit of fun speculation on my part; feel free to chime in.

Lazarus is being set up as the big bad for the next expansion. Throughout the next 2 or 3 LW instalment, all the elder dragons will awaken and its a race between us and Lazarus. We’ll be trying to destroy them and Lazarus wants to absorb thier sweet, swet magic. He’s already got a good portion of bloodstone/Mordy’s power, so with a bit of cunning, it’s possible for him to subdue the other dragons.

Eventually there are no more dragons left and its just us and Lazarus (maybe Glint’s egg too). Then the arc of the new expansion will be a “super saiyan 4 Mursaat vs mere mortals”.

I just feel that if we get a “elder dragon per expansion” type of story progression, it’ll limit creativity and feel a bit same-y.

Server Switching help

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

@silver
I think OP means he already has a free server swap he wants to use. I don’t have first hand experience, but others on the forum have said f2p players who buy the full game get a free server change that isn’t obviously stated. Apparently that’s because f2p players don’t get a choice of server when they first sign up.

@OP
Wvw performance is more affect by the number of players onscreen at the time. Thus a 100 player zerg has the same performance impact whether you are on a T1 or a T4 server. The only difference is 100 player zergs are more common on T1 servers. So if wvw is your thing, try get into a T1.
Eotm is a parallel game type... it combines all the green players across the tiers into one team, an d the same with all the reds and the blues. So it’s more affect by the colour of your server rather than its tier.

Currency

in Lore

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

@Etienne
It may not be a fiat currency, but it could still be a representative currency. I.e. A gold is not literal gold but gold/silver/copper is the Tyrian equivalent of units $100/10/1. It may be chocolate wrapped in gold foil for all we know.

And unlike fiat currency it can still be backed by a roomful of gold ingots somewhere in the capital cities. Its confusing that the currency shares the same name as the assets that back it, but RL is has just as many idiosyncrasies too.

In that way, it won’t be difficult for the various races to agree on its value: a gold ingot will be the same regardless of human, asura, etc. And the Sylvari, being the youngest race, and presumably not having a long history of commerce, is just “going with the flow”.

As to how we got to this stage, who knows. Maybe it was borne of necessity. Maybe it’s part of the peace negotiations between the races.

Welcome to GW2.

Classes are a matter of preference. Can you give an example from another MMO? When you say “easy”, if you mean straight-forward game play and good survivability, I would suggest warrior, revanent, necro or ranger.

Regarding quests, the game was made to avoid the traditional quests that other MMO’s have. The only classic quests are the story quests (e.g. Personal story, HoT story, Living world story). Other quests are heart quests… marked by a hollow yellow heart. You don’t need to talk to an NPC to get the quest, they automatically activate when you enter it quest area. Heart quests weren’t even supposed to be in the game… Anet use them as a way to attract players to areas where dynamic events happen.

Keyboard question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

A few suggestions:
1) Get another keyboard model. Look for models that advertise N-key rollover or NKRO, or any reviews that can confirm that. Don’t rely on “anti-ghosting” as that term is less strict.
2) Get a gaming key pad, e.g. Razer Tartarus or Orbweaver. It’s fairly expensive for what amounts to a quarter of a keyboard (Logitech had a version but it’s discontinued and difficult to find new… RIP competition), but I’ve used the Orbweaver for a couple of years now and could never go back.
3) Bind jump to a different button. You could bind jump to a mouse button even.

Edit:
I found this forum post that may give you a few models to consider, but they aren’t specifically considering the arrow keys.

Gaming keyboards normally state if they have x-key roll-over, e.g 10 key roll-over means it will register 10 key presses at once. If I recall correctly some models “cheat” by only having that feature enabled in certain areas of the keyboard, usually around wasd as that is what most people use.

When I pugged mine, I was shown a spot behind a rock immediately left of your starting position. If your whole group stacks behind that rock, you’ll be out of sight of Eir and she won’t use her massive AOE. She still does her burning lines and Garm will attack you there, but you should have enough wiggle room behind the rock. If any party member moves out, she’ll AOE and guarantee a wipe. When Garm is down, she’ll come into that corner where you can break and dps her… so there shouldn’t be any reason to move anywhere else. We took about 3-4 tries before succeeding.

Question about Content/Development

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: onevstheworld.2419

onevstheworld.2419

The way I see it is that raids were made so efficiently was because they were working in their own little silo… they are making a new game type and keeping it behind it’s own loading screen so there’s less potential for it to accidentally break other parts of the game. They only need the code to cope with 10 players instead of 100s. They can take heavily from existing assets… no need to make new rocks/trees/bandits. Hence less programming and QA resources required.

I think Anet’s mistake was under-estimating their ability to add to their own code, hence why many things that had to interact with existing content was either buggy or delayed.

Whatever you think of Colin’s or Mike’s performance, I think the shake-up was required because as humans, we can easily be blinkered by our opinions and past experience, and only a fresh set of eyes can see new solutions. You have to admit, they have upped their game in the last 2 patches

Gold In Gw2

onevstheworld.2419

Aside from Illconceived’s suggestions, there’s also:
Daily reward – 2g for 20-30mins of work
Weekly BL key farming – variable reward – usually gives 1-2 BL ticket scraps and a full 10 scraps will get you a BL skin worth roughly 40-50g. Opening a chest can also rarely give items worth 100-1000s of g.

On the other side of the ledger, what are you using the gold for? If you are new, the main unavoidable sink is to level crafting professions.
You shouldn’t be spending any gold on equipment; you can get geared up with rares by doing the world bosses with the rest of the zerg, and once you have enough karma, you can buy the exotic temple armors from Orr. If you are buying equipment from the TP; generally exotics that come from drops are cheaper than exotics that are crafted despite the stats being identical and having a sigil/rune attached to them.
It’s only when you get to this stage will you be considering spending large amounts of gold for ascended/legendary.

Reason I ask is your question seems misdirected. A tank in the classic sense is about damage mitigation and aggro control. When you talk about dps, healing and defensive support, that’s not necessarily part of a tank’s job or abilities. And is it in context of open world, raids, wvw, or some other game type?

If what you mean is dps with survivability in general, warrior and reaper are the classes that come to my mind.

Yes but not very active at that either, almost a year after hot and we got 1 new fractal

and overhauls to every other fractal

Plus an overhaul to an overly complicated AR system. A finished legendary. And a couple of daily reward changes.

The solution you suggest assumes the player limit is because of gameplay balance. I’m pretty certain this cannot be the case; many events already dynamically scale to the number of players, and in theory can be scaled up infinitely.

What cannot be scaled infinitely is the server and network infrastructure, as well as client side hardware and internet connection. So the limit is a hard limit, dictated by what can be handled by current technology and still deliver an acceptable player experience. We’re already very close to that limit… look how our fps completely tanks during WvW zerg battles.

A better solution would be to “reserve” your place on the map for a short amount of time to give you a chance to reconnect.

It’s possible the way they implemented salvage kits means they can never be made to stack.
When they made it possible to stack ascended salvage tools; instead of a straightforward drag-drop one on top of another, you have to “sell” 5 individual tools for a stack of 5.
