I’m not quitting thief because I can’t learn how to play it. It’s just that other classes are so much better in terms of solo roaming. I like to solo or small man roam . Thief is no longer that class because other classes do it better.
Eventually thieves will receive the buffs they need to make them useful again. Until that day happens ill play my warrior because he’s stronger for my play style.
Already been face rolling on warrior since before last patch. Thief sucks now. Thanks arena net for making my fav class suck!
Funny when you talk about build diversity nobody mentions thief and thier 2 builds they can choose from, 1 being stronger than the other. Mesmers have it bad? Just ask any thief who doesn’t play s/d.
I had a necro in spvp call my mace/shield+gs warr a perma stun warrior.
Considering he wasn’t permanently stunned I don’t understand why he said that . I just don’t think he liked the 3.kitten stun with hb to the face combo.
I haven’t lost to a thief 1v1 on warrior. I retired my thief to play warrior cause they are so much stronger and I don’t have to try as hard. It’s just easy mode.
A thief hit my warrior with pistol #2 and I had -40% reduct from food, dodged march, melandru runes, and it lasted for about .01s. The only reason I noticed it was because of the bolas animation.
Nothing has changed for thief after patch. A strong build got nerfed and nothing of importance was buffed to change the meta for thieves. S/ d still prob best spvp build and d/p still best wvw.
skull crack + 100b is still very strong.
You can’t dodge/stun break forever and you can drop skull crack every 7s or so. Eventually you get worn down and eat a HB from the skull crack.
Hammer #4 is really nice now and my shout pve build is awesome.
It’s immunity to all conditions. Berserkers+endure pain = immune to all damage warrior.
Absolutely terrible patch. I wish I could play my thief, but they just suck compared to the kind of pressure warriors can apply.

I was really hoping for some game changing tweaks to thief. Some sort of change that would bring some build diversity to the class. Some sort of buff to skills or traits that made me want to go try it out at least and come up with a possible different build…
Sadly, all we got was 1s immobilize on pistol #2 and of bunch of random nerfs.

So I feel like this last patch was a complete slap in the face to everyone who mains a thief. They needed some large loving somewhere.
I personally feel like thieves have been nerfed a lot more than buffed and any buffs we receive are very slight compared to the huge nerfs we have received.
Currently, they aren’t really worth it in tpvp/wvw. S/D is strong but you make a mistake and you die. Burst thieves don’t really match up against the condi meta. They can burst every 20-30s and condis burst is every 5-10s.
Thieves are pigeonholed into running specific builds vs. a warrior can literally run many different builds and still be effective.
I’ve been playing thief since I started the game and even have 2 level 80 thieves because I wanted an asura, but since my warrior is so much stronger I created my first ascended weapon for my warrior instead because it’s way stronger than my thief.
Does arenanet even understand the problems that thieves have or are they just too scared to buff it because people complain about them resetting fights or stealthing too much? The thief class should simply just not be a distraction for the enemy, which that’s pretty much what it is now. Even in wvw, I just let thieves run around while I kill/pressure other important classes. If one gets close to me I will skull crack it and hit it twice and he will either die or stun break and run away.
I really think that ANet does not understand thieves when the only thing they gave us was a 1s immob on #2. That’s going to last about .01s in wvw with my condi reduction and melandru runes+traits and maybe .03s in spvp. On top of it being weak, what is that main hand pistol supposed to kill with? Condis thieves are a joke and p/p is relatively unchanged with the 1s immob buff.
I’ll be playing thief from time to time, but warrior is going to become my main if arenanet keeps treating thief like this.
I expected to see some buffs for thief because they are pretty low on the totem pole for tpvp.
Disappointing IMO.
On the other hand, my warrior got buffed, if it wasn’t OP already.

There is already 25% movement speed rune in spvp. Forget the name but it has vitality on it.
Thieves are already effected by chilled. They move much slower.
IMO, big problem. I never lag in this game and now I am getting huge lag spikes, mostly happened on foe fire for me so far.
Thieves are not over powered. If anything they could use a slight upward adjustment when considering the improvements the rest of the classes have/are receiving.
Officially loving it so far!
More stuff to cap, more places to hide and sneak up on groups of enemies. Also gives reason to come out for the server wide buffs.

Evan, can’t you throw us build templates? I know it’s not a super easy feature to implement but it ought to be less thinking and more coding. Not like reworking a reward system which requires a lot more thinking than coding IMO.
Thanks. My norn is running scholars and I like it. I’m usually at 100% because I have 12k health. Really easy to regen to full with such a low health pool.
All I need now is my ascended back piece and 1 ascended earring and new thief is complete.
My question is: Are ruby orbs or scholar runes better for max dps?
I rerolled an asura thief because they animations are better and I can’t decide if I want to go with scholars or try ruby orbs.

What are you talking about? sPvP is instanced point capture. RvR is open world death match. Complete opposites. And we’ve done plenty of 10vs60+, it works. There’s just no point to it because death means nothing in WvW.
8v8 wasn’t about 8vs60.
It was about 8 vs 8. Running island so no one interfered, etc. It was about team work and group coordination. Getting people up and buffed as fast as possible if they went down, getting cc off and not breaking it, focusing dps or interrupting, etc.
Tpvp is the same thing except you can’t bring your whole 5 to one spot normally because you have to keep points. It requires the same kind of communication and coordination 8v8 did. You get the same kind of satisfaction you would from a really fun and good 8v8 fight from a good tpvp match with your set team.
I’m not talking about about rvr, just 8v8. Tpvp is as close as you will get.
Death does mean something in wvw, it means you have to port back to nearest port, repair, and run back out. Just happens a lot quicker in this game than daoc is all.
Thief will always be faster than the other classes with shadowsteps and spammable movement abilities like IA and HS.
Also fleet shadow is fastest in combat.
TL;DR
Wvw is not the equivalent of 8v8 in this game.
Tpvp is the equivalent of 8v8 in this game.
You should have spent more time in tpvp and giving it a shot. It’s exactly like 8v8. You need to pop certain abilities to save your team or revive them and get that rez or stomp, etc. Coordinate on who’s going where or what secondary objective is happening etc.
All that and being able to play your class well.
If you were looking for wvw to replace 8v8 for you then you were simply wrong. AOE in wvw only hits 5 people. You literally cannot fight a zerg with only 5 people unless you kite them.

Sure, balance is important but when has any game achieved balance? It’s a never ending process. The game is super fun and I for one have never doubted anet dedication to it.
Anet has done an excellent job with this game. I quit and sold my old accounts of my previous game because I knew I would be playing this one from now on. I played that game for 10+ years. That says a lot about how much fun gw2 is for me.
JSharp, I’ve personally spent real cash on your game just to show my support. Please don’t think these boards are indicative of how your player base feels. A lot of the people who are perfectly content with the game don’t post. It’s mostly whiners here. Your game is awesome and I wish you had the capital to hire more developers.
So wait… I heard more ranger nerfs… Could you all just please instead remove the whole class from PvP isntead? That’d be a lot faster and save a lot of time (and our sanity in PvE). Thanks

No offense, but haven’t you learned your lesson on this yet? Public should have a ptr and pre-release patch notes. You could get feedback before patching and tweak accordingly. Just saying.
Also, why does thief need a nerf? If anything it needs love.
My fav combo on fear duration necro is 12s fear.
Fear from ds, drop wall in front they get feared again, spectral grasp them back into the wall for another fear, then stakitten .
Necro fear is completely OP IMO.
I stopped reading after you said “let’s make thief kiting a way to win”. Problem with that is that in spvp who’s going to follow you off a point? Dumb idea IMO. D/p needs to be the standard all other weaponsetts are held too. Instead of nerf d/p buff the rest.
I don’t think berserker stance should make you immune to fear and daze. That’s a little over the top. Regular condis, sure np.
I got the same problem. I just created an asura necro about 45m ago. Can’t create asura thief.

I usually shortbow from range. Dodge roll any aoe. Save shadowstep for fear. Burst when an opening presents itself. If they use lich or plague I rip the stability immediately. Lich form is easy to kill w/o stability. Plague just use ranged and your stolen fear after stability is ripped. Well played necro should not lose to thief but its still possible to beat them.
I run d/p 10/30/0/0/30 burst build with shortbow.
In wvw they are super easy with 0/30/30/10/0 in full zerkers. 10k backstabs and condi removal in stealth. Just don’t eat a chain fear with stun break down.

As gc anything any power thief is going to have advantage against you. However, if you attack at the right time you can blow the thief up. You need to time your burst in between evade frames. Just takes practice. S/d thief is vulnerable but only briefly.
Just go d/p any not have to worry about warriors again. Keep them blinded. They will always try to run when thier stuff is on cd and they are going to lose. Hardest part is catching them without exposing yourself…
D/p is superior in every way except a small amount of burst from cnd.
Wvw I run d/p + s/d and spvp d/p+sb.
I have 600,000 glory. I only buy a few chests each rank and then never spend it.
lol @ OP… You obviously have no clue how to play this game. You are obviously a wvw zerger who gets demolished by a solo thief when you lose your 80+ friends.

Engineer prob hardest class but thief is hard to play really well.
Problem with thief at high level of play is that you are so squishy you can’t take any dps. You have to be aware at all times. Especially if the other team has an enemy thief. You have to know when to avoid damage and pull out and when to go on the offensive. To do that, you need skill and perfect timing of all your skills.
Necro is easy to play. Good timing makes for a better necro but any noob can pick one up and spam attacks and do well. A thief spamming hs will get destroyed.
I want great sword and offhand axe. I’d run gs+sword/axe. Headless horseman style fighting! Be cool to use gs backstab.
Yea, I agree. Don’t choose a thief. To play this class to its max potential it requires fast reactions or you die.
Who cares if bp+hs 4x is a bug or not? It’s not a big deal. It’s not like this is allowing thieves to dominate or anything…
Anet is responsible for fixing this stuff, like the jumping bug. Spam jump enough you could scale a wall. They fixed it because it was clearly a bug.
Submit your bug to the bug forums and wait. End of story.
I’m not a fan of S/D. I just don’t like spamming the same skills over and over in a particular rotation.

I do agree that a lot of other classes are getting huge boosts and becoming very powerful and thief is either getting nerfed or get joke patches like “torment” and “heal on mug” crap.
I played with my guild and got it like twice out of 10 games.
I played with darth and got temple 5 out of 5 games.
GW2 hates Darth.
Thief requires experience. Even if you land your skills properly you need to learn how to be aware of whats around you or coming up from behind you while your in combat and getting out of harms way.
Good thieves will either juke or stealth you around the map even if you come in from behind them.
That takes lots of practice imo. I play d/p burst in spvp and I can stay alive a long time even vs. multiple opponents with no shadow arts simply because I use my skills properly and before I start to take damage rather than after.
