The kite doesn’t really worry me, it’s the trend that could come out of it. Unannounced bonus items which you can’t anticipate, or even know if they’re going to happen… It smells like a bit of a dodgy practice to me if it does turn into a trend.
Of course, if it doesn’t turn into a trend, then my concerns aren’t much more than hot air. But with two ‘presents’ in such quick succession, I don’t think it’s unreasonable skepticism.

Why small, if I can ask? I don’t see why not to go big. Make it one of the banners in the gem store; “buy x worth of gems this month, get a free kite”.
That’s still small in my opinion. People don’t read signs. Big is plastering that all over the Gem store, these forums, other forums, game sites etc. That’s over the top really for this reward. So just small, I reckon.

Dumb how? People getting rewarded for purchasing gems with real money/credit is fairly smart. People bludging off those who are supporting Anet through their financial efforts, whether that’s the intention or not, and are receiving nothing seems pretty fair to me. There are plenty of other examples of both in the wider world.

They don’t have to, you are doing it for them. It’s the best kind of advertising- word of mouth. And they only had to give people a few pixels to get free advertising.
The mini pets started it, which people told other people about, so a few more people bought gems recently. Now there is this, which will cause a few more people to buy gems in the hopes of getting the next gift.

Having come from DDO as my last multiplayer game I really don’t like these dungeons, though I haven’t experienced many of them. I’m probably just spoiled by being used to the many options a game that focused almost solely on dungeons gave. Or maybe its just the crappy group experience I had with my last AC attempt. Or both.

There may be another use for them in the future. They have no value to me and they take up space that could be filled with all my other crap but I think they may be worth holding on to.

I can’t even use most of my utility skills because I’m old and slow. I usually just use the passive skills in those slots and never accept an invitation into a party because I don’t want to get chewed out.

5 80s and I’m levelling 12 more. Starting two weeks of vacation so the 80 count may or may not increase. The weather is too nice! The others get a run also but their serious turn can wait until I’ve maxed the current lot.
The only classes I haven’t repeated are elementalist and necro.

Yeah, I had an appalling time last night trying to target. I thought it was just my crappy mouse and how my play area is set up but its good to know (sort of…) thakittens not just that. Thanks for the info.

Rangers, deservedly so. I’d have more sympathy for Rangers, if they would just stop spamming their push skill. I don’t know why it is always Rangers as other professions have it too. But Rangers love to spam it at the worst possible time. At least twice in WvW, I had an opponent stunned/immobilized and ready to go down only to have a Ranger from my server push him away, which allowed him to escape. It’s even worse in PvE. Argh!
In every game there seems to be a special mechanic that gives ranger and ranger type classes a bad rep. In this game its longbow #4. I put it down to the not-having-to-group-when-roaming habit people are in. They get in the habit of using it and then don’t think twice when in a GW2-style group situation.

What sort of disadvantage? I’m not trolling you, I’m interested to know the hows and whys.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I didn’t finish the achievements for Halloween, stopped playing from Lost Shores to after Wintersday so I never even saw any of that content. Flame and Frost didn’t grab me, I got the “volunteer” title, did the instances and ran through the dungeon once, but never got the fiery hands thingie. I wandered around Southsun a bit but don’t have either backpack, Dragon Bash was pretty cool, I got the wings but they’re just annoying. I guess the aetherblade stuff is about jumping puzzles or something, I haven’t even looked at it. There’s a monocle? I dunno.
And somehow, my life doesn’t feel empty despite all these unchecked boxes and missing virtual items.
Same, pretty much. I enjoyed Frost and Flame and the Dragonbash but the others have left me a bit cold.
I don’t get why people seem to think achievement points are so important. Each to their own, though.

I completely agree. I have found myself in a similar position. I took a break from the game after the Karka event and shortly returned to find I had missed a couple events. Unfortunately this seems to mean I am at a permanent disadvantage as I have missed a small window of time in which I could earn valuable achievements and limited items.
It irks me knowing that players are at this disadvantage if they can’t abide by ArenaNet’s schedule.
What sort of disadvantage? I’m not trolling you, I’m interested to know the hows and whys.

There’s a Moa race achievement, it cost 50 silver a pop at a chance to get the achievement, how are new players suppose to afford this? This is ridiculous, I’m pretty sure less than 1% of players actually have all the achievements.
Why the sudden change? Last year the achievements were feasible, even the holiday ones, now it’s just pointless
Okay now this I have an objection too. The Emporer title costs a whole lot more than 50 silver and that’s been in the game since launch. How are new players supposed to get it? They save for it, that’s how.
Not everything needs to be attainable right away.
Yeah but the Moa Race achievement is time limited, the Emperor title is permanent and allows people to work for it in time
The moa race is permanent content, not time limited.
I thought it was part of the dragon bash achievements?
Doesn’t mean it’s temporary. The LS content will include some permanent additions to the world.

What else is there to do in the game? Grinding legendaries is almost the same as grinding achievements.
I don’t do either, and I’ve been playing off an on since last September. If you really don’t see any other options this isn’t the right game for you.
I asked what else is there to do in this game and you say the game isn’t for me, what? I don’t think you’re aware endgame is pretty much cosmetic.
I have 14 character slots and five max-level toons. I’ve never done guild missions, fractals, and only ever entered one dungeon since I started playing the game, and I have not yet run out of things to do. Most of my toons have a specific look that I like, I’m an artist and visual appeal is very important to me.
There is no such thing as “endgame.”

Not rerolling, rolling new ones. It is endgame for some people, including myself. Endgame is what you make it.
If you aren’t going to play the game then why should you get what others have received? If you’re late to the bucks party and the stripper is just packing up, do you really think she/he will perform again just for you?
Achievement points are just a bit of fun (much like strippers!). If you’re able to treat them as such then you may feel less disappointment.

If so, why is that? Why can’t female humans be as tall/ taller than males?
Sure men are generally taller than women, but with stuff like this, I’ll come out and say it, it’s generally [subtle] sexism. These GW2 characters are art. In Western Art, which can trace it roots back to African, or “Ancient Egyptian” art, women are often depicted as shorter, even if they were taller in rl, or had a higher or equal status to the man. In a notable exception, Queen Hatshepsut was depicted as tall (equal to a man), which was rare.
Interesting (and off-topic, sorry) note – Hatshepsut was also depicted without breasts so she would seem to be equal with a man. Or so some scholarly thought goes.

No, I’m someone who plays ranger a lot and I don’t find the effectiveness of the class in PvE is any more or less different than what it was.

Because they’re apples and oranges. Rangers aren’t up to other classes but they are not as broken for open world pve people are thinking. And that’s what I’m talking about. See the original post I reacted to to see why I’ve reacted. One phrase in particular (though others weren’t much good either).
I don’t pvp so I have no thoughts on that matter. My guildie plays his ranger in wvw and he does alright but nothing to write home about. I’ve played ranger in most of the instanced content I’ve done and he’s pulled his weight as far as I know. Never heard otherwise.
This survey might be useful to see how a section of the player base regards the classes in the various formats but it is not beyond reason that a lot of replies to it will be based on the type of thinking that was in the post, or from opinions on poor play witnessed by players that haven’t experienced the class. Any class for that matter.
Ranger is not “terrible” in pve but its not awesome either. I’ve never said as much.

I hope you guys aren’t too put off teaching anymore. I’ve only ever done level 1 of the fractals and had a guy take us through who knew it backwards. When it comes time for me to get serious about them I’d like to think there’s people still out there who aren’t too burnt.

Haters and fan boys are going to infest every game. The real problem is the people who give them the attention they desire.
The best thing to do is use the forums to discuss issues and how they can be resolved in the future to improve the game. Instead of arguing if the game is good or bad, discuss how it can be better and ignore the trolls.
One person’s issue may be another person’s “what the hell are you talking about!” though. With the number of people who inhabit the internet that like to share their least opinion it makes it difficult to avoid arguments.
And as for the secondary topic running through this thread: just about all threads in a gaming forum are pointless.

Ugh, not centaurs. I have to look at horses backsides at work so I wouldn’t want to spend hours looking at one in the game. Plus, they would have to put them all in pants just for the sake of modesty. All the male centaur mobs seem to be geldings, I haven’t checked the female ones too closely…
