But, you’re right: David is beautiful! Let’s get some David-looking partial-nudes up in the watchknights or the next mechanical mob, with some testicle-bolts Then this design would be closer to equal (though his kitten is still mighty modest compared to this design’s breast size).

Just so I understand what you’re saying. Are you saying that because the Watchknight has implied areola and nakedness, that to be equal a male robot would have to have it’s genitals exposed?

Male toplessness is not sexualized the way female toplessness generally is in western culture, so it would have to be something like testicular bolts with a generic codpiece, imo. I think this would keep the modesty of the main organ in both designs while gonad/mammary is emphasized/“exposed”. How would you do it? I’ve seen more radical propositions on here, haha, so I’m sure you have an opinion.

Nearly every woman I know will go a little crazy at seeing a hot male torso, not to mention muscular arms and athletic legs. I don’t know where in western culture you are but you’re nowhere near where I am.

I agree, and there are plenty of examples to support this.

The difference I think, is that because our societies have accepted male toplessness for so long, the novelty of it has worn off to some degree. Now, stay with me because this is going to be a tad difficult to explain.

In my opinion (I would really like to find some studies supporting this), there are different feelings that come into play when experiencing something rare. For example, when you visit an amusement park, or your favourite band in concert, there are a lot of emotions present that most of us wouldn’t consider to be sexual in nature.

The novelty, and rarity of the event makes it exciting. When it comes to female and male chests, I would argue that both are still equally sexualized. The difference is that because male nudity is typically more common, some of the additional emotional elements are not as strong as they are when you see the relatively rare female breast.

This is hard to explain, because I feel that people often lump the additional emotional responses into the sexual response, and assume it’s all one emotion.

Why this matters is because when we are talking about male sexualization, I think we need to remember that certain male chests are often viewed as very sexual by both genders. And there is an additional novelty involved when someone we admire takes their shirt off (like some of the more popular actors out there).

So, when we’re talking about the sexualization of the genders, I think we need to remember that while sexualization of both genders upper bodies still exists, males simply have become more accepted.

And…as you can guess, this means that in the context of this Watchknight, I don’t think the equivalent is male genitalia…that would be female genitalia. The Watchknight does not possess such an organ.

Correct me if I’m wildly wrong but I think you’re meaning the difference in emotional responses can be compared to a bunch of male surfers chilling on the beach with their suits half undone versus a male stripper going about his business. Since female surfers generally wont sit about topless (on popular beaches anyway in my country) we wont see their chests bared for all and the emotional response, from both sexes, would be higher if they ever did. Seeing feminine chest construction on these robots is eliciting this same response.

I’ve had a terrible cold all week so maybe I’ve gone off track here.

I agree that they are robots and it doesn’t make sense for them to have all the qualities of a human. However, that is also why I don’t think it makes sense for them to be fully sexualized in the same way a human is.

I also agree that the concept of having robots with a feminine figure reflects the empowering qualities of Queen Jennah, but it crosses past that because they are not elegant feminine figures the same way that Jennah is, but instead are modeled after a completely naked woman (well, unless you count the heals). Jennah may utilize her sexuality as part of what makes her powerful, but she doesn’t do so by walking around topless in front of everyone.

In other words, the core concept behind what was likely intended behind these characters was great, but poorly implemented because they don’t say “you can be a good fighter while also being feminine.” It’s a delicate balance, I know, but it’s the difference between why Buffy the Vampire Slayer is often heralded for it’s female empowerment, but something like Chainsaw Lollipop isn’t.

So, because they’re TOO feminine, they’re displaying that they’re less powerful than if they had more “conservative” metal “clothing”? Even though they’d have the exact same fighting prowess? To me, that’s implying that being beautiful and feminine somehow implies weakness. I don’t think that’s true.

Buffy the Vampire slayer was created by a male. She wore a disproportionate amount of tight fitting pants. She fought monsters in what could be considered inappropriate attire for the situation, and she was far too slight and thin for the powers she possessed. In canon, her and the other slayers were created by a group of men for the sole purpose of defending others, at the cost of her life. Using the same logic as this thread, she would be considered a deeply sexist and misogynistic fantasy.

But instead she’s held up an icon for female empowerment, because she was a strong, capable, layered human being who is to be respected. These are robots, so they don’t have a personality of their own, we only have the personality of the woman who commissioned them, and she ticks all those same boxes.

Buffy faced a similar situation when Warren was creating sex bots; they were disgusted by it, they stole the technology and used it to create Buffy-Bot, who served a similar function to the watch knights while Buffy was busy being dead again.

They weren’t outraged that someone would make a robot look beautiful, but they were massively outraged at one made simply to serve sexual whims and fantasies. Rightly so. Reconfigured to fight the good fight? not so much of an outrage.

And we’re only assuming these robots were initially drawn by a man. My fiance posted a rather lengthy post earlier, about her experiences as a female artist; she draws idealized feminine characters, because that’s what she enjoys looking at. To me, she is an idealized female character herself, but should I tell her that she’s not allowed to draw “sexualised” females as it might offend someones sensibilities? Should I make her go through all her toons and give them more battle appropriate outfits?

Or does she have every right to express herself and create something she enjoys, in the same was a game developer does?

Again, if these were robots designed to make sandwhiches and kitten the locals, I’d be on the other side of the fence completely. But they’re just not.

Very nice. I considered mentioning Buffy in my post but it wouldn’t have really fit with what I said. Good work.

Thanks! I like to try and mention Buffy AT LEAST once in every discussion I have. Sometimes makes it difficult to order in a resteraunt. I usually try and go places that serve rabbit, so I can sing about how it must be bunnies. Or maybe midgets.

What funnylines have you heard in game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The funniest I’ve heard recently wasn’t from an NPC at all, but could have been.

The zerg was doing the legendary Centaur and he was down to about 2% but hadn’t had an aoe spike for a while. I was sweating on him get done before the aoe came out because we weren’t in a good spot for it and then it happened! So there’s twenty or so unconscious adventurers watching the last 2% of health go down in silence, who knows what we’re all thinking, and then a lone voice bubble appears in the middle of the bodies saying “I really hate that guy”.

Yes, I know you had to be there and I wish I’d taken a screenie but it probably made my week.

Now if I decide to do something on my main it basically auto progresses my alts as well without the option to actually use my alts to do their own progression, and that is what I have a problem with.

Based on this sentence I must have misread what you were saying about Fractal and WvW levels. You want to level up each character separately, which is the current system, or you do not?

The Death of Alts...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: zenleto.6179

zenleto.6179

Well should you be able to out do ppl who do not have alts? Think about it if they let every thing be hero bound as in event dailies etc.. then the game would move from the casual type of play to the more hardcore type of play. This is simply not what GW2 is about. Even when you look to other games most dailies are only one time per account most of the time any way.

Maybe, if that’s what you want to do.

The problem is that, to me, each character should be either it’s own unique thing (basically it’s own account) or should be considered part of the account.

However, ANet makes progression (story dungeons, leveling, map completion, dyes, fractal level, WvW ranks) per character and rewards (boss chests, dungeon tokens, laurels) per account.

This means that over a 20 day period, you are better off having a single character than running multiple characters. Maybe that’s fine. But this game originally appeared very alt friendly, and many people have developed characters with that expectation. It’s a little disappointing to see it change.

I find it a lot easier to agree with this than the opening post. I find I can’t defend Anet in these sorts of threads anymore but the OP left me just thinking “So what?”.

Nightmare Wallet for Alt-players Gold

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

zenleto.6179

I’m confused by those pointing to this as niche. As far as I’m aware, don’t most MMOs basically encourage this sort of behavior with those that have alts? GW2’s the exception to the rule by making all currencies accessible accountwide.

We seem to be niche compared to the bulk of players on the forums. There’s probably more players running around who haven’t come here that, after the update, have said to themselves “WT….! What are they doing? We never had this in game Z.” I’ve never played an MMO that didn’t have individual bank storage, and up until this point its been my only black mark against GW2.

Its a non-issue anyway. There’s plenty of new content to take my mind off it anyway (until I log my next alt on…). The overspending guys – that’s something I never thought of.

If there’s one thing, *one thing I love about this community, its the kittening. Months of it for having tokens no longer take up bank space, hell more or less a years worth. We get it, exactly as asked for, then complaining about it being off the bat. Not just this but everything really.

“we want more content, more often”

new content every 2 weeks.

“WAH WAH ANET FORCES US TO DO CONTENT NOT FAIR”

“we want a wallet with all of our tokens in it”

new wallet feature that easily stores all currencies so there’s no running to the bank to grab tokens, or gold. (karma has always been in the wallet, its just an account pool of it now is all).

" (lets just pretend all the crying is here as i don’t have the patience to type it out)"

Honestly. Be happy Anet takes the time to listen and respond, you don’t get that type of interaction in mmos very often, or many genres at all. If musts needs be, then you can make a lil note on your desktop about if that individual character can only spend what they earn, takes a couple of seconds to do. Surely if you have each character compartmentalized to that degree, surely they keep their own financial records no ?

Water combat: great or suicidal?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think its great, and have to disagree about the lowered DPS when fighting underwater. I’ve always thought its greater, with Anet making it so since the combat can be more difficult with the extra dimension. Its easy gliding through the water slaughtering everything with any class. My guildies would have to agree with the OP, however.

I do have to say that GW2’s underwater combat is very reminiscent of DAoC’s. I really enjoyed that too and had no issues though friends of mine avoided it like the plague.

Manifesto Clarification

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vayne and the rest can say and twist the manifesto to mean anything..

I take it on face value, and that value is meaningless to the game they made, yes its maybe three years old but it doesn’t change everything in the manifesto was lies (all but the art direction) and if Anet was honest about all the spin and PR in that video it was very poorly explained.

I’m still in Guildwars 2 swinging a sword, hey guess what i swung it again, the grind is there and that boss spawns 10 mins later.

I only saw this manifesto about a month ago and also took it on face value. To me, the game seems to be what they intended. Or close to.

Twisting is one thing, interpreting is another. I can’t see much twisting going on but a fair amount of discussion on interpretations.

Why so much QQ ??

It ruins the idea of RPing separate characters as separate characters. It’s not about ‘spending too much on one character’ as a dev suggested earlier in the thread.

problem is, I have millions in karma saved in liquid form and I don’t know if there is a cap on it.

Anyone know for sure if there is a cap on Karma?

I don’t know whether there’s a cap, but I’ve seen nothing about it automatically ‘drinking’ stored karma bottles and adding them to the new account pool. So even if there is a cap, you could just keep the stored bottles until you use enough karma to have space left within the cap.

Edit: Anyone have suggestions for workarounds? Only one I can think of is a personal guild, but that isn’t really feasible for 8 characters.

Try 36 characters!

I was not a very happy player when I first posted in this thread back on page 2 or 3. I was very close to quitting the game right there and then, not even waiting for the update. Not a ragequit, more of a sad-disappointed-limp-awayquit.

I keep all money earned from the TP in the shared bank for rainy days and all my guys and girls keep the money they earned. If they cant afford anything they want then they have to go earn more. Not for much longer.

I’ve managed to reconcile it all now to a point that there will be no quitting (not over this anyway!) but I’m still not very happy with the way its all worked out. I was going to copy over a quote from your other thread but everything there I agreed with and you know what you wrote. But I lived through the various incarnations of SWG and this nothing on what happened there so I’ll still be here.

I can’t think of my people as very individual now, which is quite poor for a game that is easy to alt in. There’s a picture of an amorphous beast that’s all eyes and mouths in an old Conan comic. I wish i could find it…

How much have you paid to play Guild Wars 2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: zenleto.6179

zenleto.6179

I bought the game and haven’t paid a cent ever since. I’m shocked how much and how MANY of you guys throw money at the game.

Yea that’s exactly what I was thinking. I mean, I don’t really care what people do with their own money.

It just really crystallized why ArenaNet gets away with ignoring such large chunks of the community. As long as enough people are throwing hundreds into the game, those few are the only ones they really care to cater to.

I’m starting to think that F2P with microtransactions has killed MMO’s for me. I don’t like any of them. There’s just no saving Guild Wars 2 while this kind of thing is going on. If they got rid of the real money —> gems --> ingame gold thing…but yea. They won’t.

This blows. The very same reasons why goldsellers ruin games has been allowed in GW2. There is no level playing field if people can buy gold with real money.

Skins and other shiny items are fine…but since people can buy gold…

…and since the RNG in this game seems to be a big fat neon sign saying “just buy gold and get your precursor that way.”

I think any hope of ever having fun in GW2 is shot. This is the closest I’ve come to actually contemplating an uninstall. Gonna have to sleep on this one…

So you don’t care how people spend their money but then you’re contemplating going to the extent of uninstalling (proving what?) because of how people spend their money. Quite a conundrum for you. There’s no pay to win in this game as far as I’ve seen so where’s the problem?

Or is it your “thing”?

She doesn’t really need too many dimensions since she’s just an NPC. As various Living Stories go by maybe we’ll see more sides of her but I’m not fussed if she just sits on a chair and gets fanned by nubiles only wearing g-strings or runs around Divinities Reach in full plate shouting orders at everyone. Though the latter might be fun.

The former might be fun too…

Nice feature addition. I wish you would add any token that could be used in the future to it. I’ve got a lot of temporary content stuff that I don’t know if I should delete or hang onto in case it is reused in the future. It would be nice if either these items went into the wallet or were converted to a generic token to cut down on clutter.

This would be sort of handy. I was wondering last night about all the older LS stuff taking up space.

Would be nice if they gave people who spent a fixed # of $ since release some special item

$100 in gems – title
$101-$300 – mini
$301-$500 – chrome legendary dye
$501-$700 – unique armor set
$701-$1000 – unique weapon set
+$1000 – Character star, title, and other awesome and unique item. Maybe a portal stone that ports you to “The Lounge” where you can mingle with other ballers :P

Hey I wouldn’t mind but there is a big problem with that idea. Look at the thank you gifts they have given to people a few times if they even if they spent $10 on gems. It was a very nice thank you and I enjoyed it. However each time people started running around with their heads exploding over it. Just imagine your idea. It would turn in a global thermal nuclear war around here.

Might be fun to watch from The Lounge, though.

The Firstborn should be having a jubilee. Party for Trahearne! Nah, it wouldn’t end well. Party for Caithe!

Agreed. Should be a jamboree instead.

Or even a corroboree!

Character Attachment... the lack of.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s difficult to become attached to characters who don’t feel like they have any real attachments in their world.

I’ve recently started 3 new characters – human, asura, and charr – and I’ve been playing through the Personal Story stuff for the asura and the charr. I gotta say that right now (ignoring, for the moment, my views on the living story) it’s the Personal Story that’s (hyperbolically speaking) kind of killing the game for me. There’s not enough meat on the bones of these ‘personal’ stories, and there’s barely enough bone to flavor a soup.

My charr, for example – he hit 30 tonight and has been through the personal story up to joining an Order, but I’m not ready for him to ditch his warband and join an Order. To hell with the Orders. He’s barely had time to get to know his warband. I want him to do more – lots more! – with them. But that’s not an option. And I know from experience he’ll barely have time to get to know his Order mentor before that part of the story comes to an abrupt halt, too. Then it’s Trahearnia all the rest of the way. That’s an attachment I could do without. Ugh.

I recommend: the addition of mass quantities of ‘Side-Story’ missions: ongoing story arcs (and maybe some one-shot adventures to shake things up now and again) that our characters can experience with their warbands, krewes, families and friends, that scale to the character’s level so they can be played at any time along the way. This would also help fill in the gaps when the Personal Story jumps several levels ahead of our characters.

Another possibility: let the warbands, krewes, families/friends of our characters serve as ‘henchmen’ for use in dungeons/fractals.

To sum up: I think our characters need friends. Permanent friends, comrades at arms, and family members.

That aren’t Trahearnia.

Absolutely! I’ve been thinking this also. Some of the early storylines are more likely LS material (second Tree, Steam creatures) but others could easily be expanded. Also, for those who play them, maybe have one or two alts to be henchmen.

Time, money, and dev inclination permitting, of course.

I’m very attached to my characters. Maybe too much since I was going to quit the game over the up coming wallet because I didn’t (still don’t) want to share gold and karma. I’m over that now.

I’ve only deleted three characters. One was my second ever (human Mesmer) and had no feelings whatsoever for him but he was only level 5. The other two were elementalists and both over 20. I took screenshots of them as a memento.

You did not read my post properly. It is not an option. It is not possible without touching core systems. Which will have other consequences. An MMO is a very complex thing.

So what your telling us is: Removing a key feature from the personal bank doesn’t touch any core systems, but adding a completely new feature while leaving the bank as is would require you to alter core systems.

I may not be a programmer, but something about that statement just seems backwards to me.

He’s not a programmer either. He has no idea how the digital cogs work. In the future, he should refrain from posting comments, in regards to topics outside of his own area of expertise.

I will ignore the tone of your post so I can give an answer that is relevant for other people: The information I passed along was coming directly from the programmer who implements the system. I think he is qualified to address this.

Thank you for clearing that up. I am reminded of the Ferengi Rules of Aquisition:

Rule #30: Talk is cheap; synthehol makes profit.

Rule #32: Be careful what you sell. It may do exactly what the customer expects.

Rule #203: New customers are like razor-toothed greeworms. They can be succulent, but sometimes they bite back.

Rule #269: Never trust a merchant who insists on using their own scales.

Rule #299: Whenever you exploit someone, it never hurts to thank them. That way, it’s easier to exploit them the next time.

Omg! And i thought I was a big nerd…

zenleto, as Tyria evolves they’ve found a new magical bank system where all your currency stuff automatically and magically will be sent to (because they thought all these various and heaps of different currencies are too much of a hassle for the poor adventurers). Despite being magical (and Tyrian.. something like “human”) doesn’t always mean everything and everyone is considered adequately and as the magic has boundaries the downside is all your characters have to share the same pool where to store and get their needed currencies from.
I really hope you’ll find a way to accept what now sounds game breaking for you.

Bah! Humans, what are they good for!

I’ll probably end up just playing one of my 30 exclusively but that’ll hurt my altoholism. Not going to make any decisions until the update anyway.

The guild bank is definitely an idea to keep only a certain stipend but I gotta ask… WHY is this a gamebreaker? Why not just….not use the cash you didn’t earn with that character? I am genuinely curious, as I cannot see how your fun is impacted by this in any way?

Its just a “thing”. Everyone has one, this one is mine. I can’t really explain it more than that.

I’ve finally found a personal game breaker

All my alts are separate, I want them to keep the coins and karma they earn. The other stuff sure but not that. Doesn’t look like there’s any options

I won’t be logging any characters on after the update. Sorry fellas, don’t like raining on parades but I felt I should put it out there

Keep in mind that whenever you log in on an alt, the changes will be applied. This is not just on the day of the patch.

Martin, that’s the thing. I don’t want the changes applied as described. If I find I can go to Options on the selection screen and toggle on/off Gold or Karma, or any of it, then I’ll be one happy camper. If I can’t then the tent will go into storage until its usable again.

I’m not bagging the game but I think this is a bit of a wall for me.

Official Response Relating to Farming Events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I like how many of the players are anti farming and all, but why complain if people who want to farm are doing it??? With that event, Arah was accessable. We were not hindering anyone’s progress or anything.

Its just that people feel like complaining because they were not initaily involved or were the first to do the farm. And due to that they must rage on the forums and any other medium out there.

I’m not anti-farming, its something I do from time to time. But Events have a higher level of importance in the game than farming. Anet have left this place alone for the life of the game apparently, probably because nobody has really complained about anything. Now that a rage war has sprung up about it, they’ve made a fix to shut everyone up.

Blame the jerks on both sides of the debate since they’ve wrecked it for everyone.

I agree with your last statement but I dont understand why you are considering events to be important. they are not! you fail nothing happens but another event…. you pass them nothing happens for another 10 – 20 mins until they are repeatable…..

Yes they are some events like the metas that will reward you for doing them but how can these simple events considered to be imporant especially when they are hindering anyones progress.

I don’t, Anet does! Dynamic events are one of their big things in the game. Are you really not aware of that?

Main Cities

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: zenleto.6179

zenleto.6179

The only reason I can see that arenanet developed other cities is to give low level players a place to go. Thats about it.

It may not seem like that to you and lots of other people, but this game does have a bit of a lore background to it.
Not just to show us lots of pretty pixel to break up the farming grind, but to actually give us a reason to, you know, play the game.
At least I think that was the initial plan.

But the abandonment of pretty much any meaningful city content and the headshot the home instance idea suffered on launch, actually enforces your and all the other “story-ignorers” standpoint.

As does ANet´s genius idea to base virtually every temporary content injection of the last 9 months soley in L.A.

To expand on this a bit they could easily set up Living Stories around the races that are started in the other cities. Find or helping the second Tree, for instance, could start in the Grove rather than LA. Or any story lines involving the lost animal Spirits of the Norn would obviously be centred in Hoelbrak. Visiting the shrine there of the three lost Spirits makes me think that at least one of them isn’t dead. Ideas for the future that would breath some life into the other cities for a while.
