Is there really any reason to make public who the forum specialist are since they mostly are there to report back to ANet? I don’t see why someone needs a tag for that. Having a tag opens up possibilities of them being constantly harassed about being white knights and ANet toadies. Imo, it would be better not to have people publicly labeled as being “semi official” when they have no official function other than collate information and report or linking official posts (which anyone can do).

That is a really thought-provoking comment!

What do others feel about this? I’m very interested in feedback on the subject of making specialists public or not.

Official communications will come from ArenaNet employees and my team. So there’s no need to banner a forum specialist post since they will not be posting officially in the sense of “Here’s dev feedback on this suggestion” or “I want to post ArenaNet’s position on this subject.” Certainly they can help in reviewing threads and linking to official posts so forum members see the ArenaNet response, though.

We value the expertise of those who have applied. Their asking questions for clarity or to obtain more details or just generally getting involved in discussing a subject would be really great. They can provide the team with very valuable information on a subject that helps in analyzing whether to escalate to the devs. But none of those activities would require a delineation between Specialist Bob as a forum member and Specialist Bob as a forum specialist so I don’t think we need to have the two posting options, although thanks for the suggestion.

If Anet wants to judge individual mods, I’m sure they’d have a way of tracking exactly who’s done what. Or could implement one. Without letting it be known to the players.

Yes, we can track individual moderator actions — no worries there.

Don’t say the truth in sarcastic/mocking manner …

Sarcasm and mockery have little place in a forum, whether they are used to speak “the truth” or not.

The developers read these forums virtually every day, but they derive the greatest benefit from reading a concise, combined set of comments from a wide range of forum members. Imagine reading the 12th or 20th thread that says virtually the same thing. Does that speak towards something positive: “This is definitely something we need to do?” Or does it point away from reading the forums, when there’s so much redundancy and so little value in repeated/duplicated comments? The devs are busy people.

I personally agree with this 100%.

And that’s why I am always so confused to see forum rules such as “Don’t necro and old thread! Make a new one!” Even these forums here discourage players from posting in existing threads (bump override). Not to mention all the threads that had those combined, concise sets of comments from a wide range of forum members, but were archived away in locked subforums instead of carried over. Sometimes threads are merged but most times they’re not. Lastly, when there’s only one thread going, and parts of it become “toxic”, sometimes the entire thread is locked (and in many forums, the rule is that you’re not supposed to create a new, similar thread) – but when the discussion is going on in three different threads, only the toxic one is locked, which allows the other two threads to continue the discussion itself.

I don’t mean to rant, but it is a bit mixed-message here on the topic of “use existing” vs. “create your own”. A clear ruleset (ideally supported by the forum software, for example “are you sure you want to create this as a new thread? Here is some similar-sounding titles:” instead of the bump-override) would really, really help.

You make a really good point! We do our best to merge threads and we override bumps without penalty. (Fancy that. ) But yes, I see what you mean about mixed messages.

As to software solutions, well, that’s not likely with this software. And more than anyone here, I’m keenly (I mean KEENLY) aware that not having a search engine is just a really bad thing!

So what you’re saying is that someone wants to do the right thing but (1) s/he can’t find a thread (no search engine) or (2) the post is old enough it needs a “bump” and the rules speak against that.

I’m going to review all our rules — I’ll highlight this, with thanks for your pointing it out.

Donari has it right. If you’re trying to get your thoughts to “go viral” in a way they can’t be “snuffed out,” you’re not participating in a conversation. Participate in the conversation instead and you’ll be fine.

Yes. Please!

Any other questions?

Will the FS operate and post with their existing game (and forum accounts) or will they get new ones?

We have not made a final decision on this. What’s your opinion? Is there a reason it should be one or the other?

I see pluses and minuses to either choice. I can’t help but wonder how the forum membership as a whole will have faith in a specialist who uses an anonymous account. If they are chosen for their history, should their history be hidden? On the other hand, I’d like to hear your concerns or comments in relation to how a specialist might prefer not to post on his/her game account. Since specialists won’t be doing controversial actions, such as moderating posts or suspending accounts, I am not sure what benefit is derived by hiding their name, but I’d like to hear others’ thoughts.

I should mention that no one at ArenaNet has a “sock puppet” account that allows him or her to post anonymously aside from the Customer Support agents who post using their “handles.” When we set up forum accounts for employees we use a team member’s real name. But be assured we wouldn’t ask a specialist to reveal his/her real name.

where are the new hairstyles?

I’d like to know where are the new hairstyles advertised on the sale in gemstore today, because I didn’t find them in the make-over kits I bought.

I’m so sorry for your confusion, and I have passed along your comments to the BLTC Team and to Customer Support. I am sure they can figure out how to amend this for those who require it, and I imagine they will examine advertising to ensure it’s as clear as possible.

We had to remove several posts from would-be attorneys (and one real attorney, thank you for trying to help!) because the Forum Code of Conduct states: “Do not post legal action threads. Using the forums or PMs to encourage, promote, endorse, or incite any kind of legal action against the company or any individual is strictly prohibited. Such content will be removed, and the author’s posting privileges will be permanently revoked.” We did not terminate accounts at this time but must insist that forum members observe the rules, which were formulated to protect our members from misinformation and inaccurate advice.

i mean really, that’s the super sayian charr hair do from the last update which was months ago. that’s what made me check dulfy out for any new hair updates.

change the wording from New Hairstyles to Unique Hairstyles or Exclusive Hairstyles and problem solved

That is a great suggestion, thank you for making it.

NOTE: I am 100% positive this ad was not an attempt to deceive or an effort to sell makeover kits to those for whom the hairstyles were not, truly, new to that account holder.

This is not a matter for legal discussion, and as pointed out above, legal discussions have absolutely no place in this forum, any more than ridiculous cries of “Freedom of Speech” are relevant for private game servers and privately-hosted forums.

Here are some answers to question about the Forum Specialist Program:

  • No forum specialist will be a moderator. No FS will have moderation rights or back-end forum access of any kind. They will not infract, suspend, or ban any forum member — ever. Forum specialists will be able to flag points — as any member can and should do — and we hope they will do that actively. But each flag will be reviewed impartially and acted upon only by staff members and only if the flagged post or thread is in breach of the UA, RoC, Naming Policy, or FCoC.
  • We expect applicants to have a decent, but not necessarily perfect, forum and game history. We would not dismiss an application simply because someone received an infraction for speaking in the heat of the moment or making a joke to which someone reacted negatively. We will review game and forum account history on a case-by-case basis. Naturally, someone with a long list of forum infractions or someone with a sketchy game history is is not a likely candidate.
  • Forum specialists will not asked to muzzle their opinions. These will be highly involved forum members, and their opinions and insights are valuable. We will encourage specialists to link to official threads for official information and offer their personal opinions clearly as opinions.
  • We will not limit our selections to cheerleaders and “white hats.” Communication style is key. Offering constructive ideas for change is good; complaining is not. Expressing opinions is fine; expressing opinions as fact is not. Interacting positively is good; condemning, dismissive, or condescending communication is not.
  • This is a pilot program. We hope to be able to expand it outside the U.S. in the future, but there are legal reasons for the limitation right now.

Any other questions?

Great tips, Schnicky.

The first 2 minutes of the game are probably the most important for setting your team up for victory. As silly as it sounds, taking 30 seconds to figure out where everyone is going to go right out of the gate is going to give your team the edge in those first engagements. The 0-0-5 splits, or the 0-0-0 5-man chieftain/svanir rush openings happen a bit too often, and are completely avoidable with a bit of education/discussion before the match begins.

Palador — you’re sounding a tad sensitive about the whole moderator thing. Don’t worry, no one’s going to remove your post — it’s sensible, moderate in tone, and presents a couple of valid questions. It’s fine!

As the new team lead, I am working on quite a few behind-the-scenes projects. The forum reorganization was one, the FSP is another. And because moderation is an absolutely critical component to any set of forums, there are several things that the team and I will be analyzing as far as moderation.

  • Named Moderators: Named moderators can put a more human face on the mod team, it’s true. However, using names — even generic names — can make individual moderators targets of forum member dissatisfaction. No matter how prudent and reasonable the decisions, you could see comments like, “Moderator A is reasonable, but every time Moderator B gets involved, too many threads are locked.” “Moderator M seems to be having a bad day.” “Fire Moderator X, s/he is ban-happy!” If a mod errs we want to address it. But in my experience (about 16 years in forum administration) allowing the focus to become “Moderator B actioned me” (instead of “I made an error and was actioned”) isn’t productive. It distracts from the actual function of the team, may make moderators uncomfortable in doing their job, and may serve as a form of attempted invalidation of very accurate decisions. (RW analogy: If a student can point to “my teacher was having a bad day,” then maybe s/he can avoid answering the real question of “How did you get a ‘D’ on your term paper?” )
  • I’m not taking the suggestion off the table — we will discuss it, both pro and con.
  • “Canned” Responses: We’re getting a bit away from that in some situations, as recent notes would prove. However, as a rule, the use of standard comments makes for an efficient and clear process. Efficient for the mod; clear to the person to whom it’s addressed. I happen to believe that a personal response is best, but I also recognize that a finite number of moderators and other team members serve a large number of forum members, in four languages.
  • We’ll talk about this, as well.

You’ve asked the question before, and you’ve been answered accurately by forum members. You asked “So I should post my thoughts in an existing thread?” and suggested those thoughts would be “buried.” On the contrary. If every forum member decided his/her feedback was so important that it needed — nay deserved! — its own thread, we’d never have a discussion but a series of singular posts, like side discussions without volume or significant substance. And those suggestions, points of input, even complaints would not be perceived to have much weight because, after all, whomever responded might likewise feel his/her comments deserved their own threads… and so on, ad nauseum.

Let’s make it easy for them to get feedback, both good and bad, in an efficient, meaningful manner!

Now imagine reading a consolidated thread where Forum Member Fred, who shares many of the opinions of Forum Member Marsha, posts that he agrees with Marsha, but has a few other thoughts to add. That growing, enhanced conversation is how you have a meaningful dialogue on a forum and that is how the developers and the community as a whole get the greatest value from their participation.

The best way to contribute to a thread in such a way that your comments will not be removed or locked is to offer productive, constructive suggestions and not simply a list of things you don’t like. Why don’t you like it? What would make it better? What constructive suggestions can you make to amend those things you feel need improvement? And, hey, would it hurt to remember simple components like courtesy and respect, for your fellow forum members? The developers? Even yourself?

So you want changes? Think things could be better? Want to point out a better direction? Join the merged threads, where your input will be far more likely to be seen and, remember, appraised , in part, by its tone and the nature of the suggestions. You don’t have to be all sunshine and buttercups in your post, but your post only has value if it’s voiced clearly, concisely, and constructively. Those are the Three C’s of good forum communication.

I hope this answers your question and I look forward to seeing your thoughts in the appropriate threads.

shadow — You are right, there haven’t been a lot of updates on this topic since the OP. I just wasn’t sure if you’d see the “We’re aware of these things” part. If so, my apologies. And yes, for the most part, changes to NPE are still on the “to do” list. But there’s no lack of understanding by the devs. For instance, our narrative director, Leah, posted about changes that need to be made in relation to the Personal Story.

Farm Flats and Havoc — Have you posted in the Traits thread? You’re welcome to add your thoughts there, as well, if you care to do so.

Zera — thank you and understood. The mods merged your post into the main thread to keep things tidy, concise, and easily reviewed. Thanks for sharing.

naisonod — If you did that on a phone, I’m impressed! And to your point, I can promise you that we do play our own game, so changes made are made with game experience, not on a whim or without a full view. I take on board you don’t care for the changes, but I did want to clarify that things aren’t switched by people who live in a vacuum.

Well said,

But help me understand why a developer would ask a random player for input. Maybe there is backstory I don’t know about but from the outside looking in I don’t get why this situation occurred

I do believe I was there.

It was at the wurm yesterday. Gaile was there and some players took the opportunity to start complaining in map chat about the NPE. It was pointed out that she wasn’t there in her official position as Arenanet Forum Communications Team Lead and that complaining to her about the game in map chat while waiting for the event wasn’t the most appropriate thing to do since she was not working at her titled job right then and that the most appropriate thing was to post needed information in the forum for her to see when she was gathering information.

That doesn’t mean though she was asking for someone to make a separate new thread or to repost old information that he had already posted before.

This is correct, AP, and thanks for outlining what happened. My hope is that any- and everyone with feedback about the NPE will post in this thread, so that I can use it to gather statistics, quotes, feedback, and other components for a full report for the devs. They are tracking this thread, as they have been for weeks, but a report might also be valuable.

I did merge the thread that was initiated as part of yesterday’s casual conversation to keep things on track and focused.

Majority is still for LS on this tread sooo….Should Anet listen those 30+ people that says YES to LS or those like 5…that says NO hmmm?

I think this statement pretty much sums it up. Despite all the off-topics, the name-calling, the flames of anyone with even a remotely positive attitude, the duplicate postings of the same repeated comments, and all that — the majority are in support of the Living World and look forward to its future.

At this point, to avoid this devolving into more back-and-forth on the nature of forum members instead of on the nature of the game we’ll close this thread with a reminder that everyone should stay on topic and not spin off into side conversations that do absolutely nothing to contribute to a thread.

One thing that always popped out to be by any mail that ArenaNet actually sends its player is… the Arena Logo is also in the letterhead. Nice big red lego right there, always tells me the email is official. It’s actually very hard to miss.

It may sound rude or whatever but… I don’t know, to me… when I have read such unbelievable forum posts on various topics regarding people woes about this game, to me, part of me feels that if you do not see the way ArenaNet properly dispenses mail in this game for which one cannot tell the difference between official mail and false player mail, then… to me you’re obviously not paying attention.

To me, the signs are as clear as day, and once I pointed those signs out to my husband, he dawned on him: “Hey, you’re right, it doesn’t have that red logo on it…”

(Beside the point, for those of you noticing and then wondering why, I haven’t decided which character to put the banker golem on yet, that’s why I never took it out.)

If I were going to lavish praise on anyone up in the Anet Eagle’s Nest, it’d be their network and code people. They’re why the game works virtually anywhere in the world on a comedically broad array of hardware via internet agglomorations that defy logic and reason with their giant-spaghetti-bowl complexities.

In my experiences, they’re likely the ones that are going above and beyond just to do their jobs ‘adequately’.

You are so, SO right about this! Our programmers and network peeps are amazing. At the same Christmas party where I faffed to Daniel about the vistas and art, I also had a nice chat with Eric Rane, who’s a programmer lead. My regard for programmers knows no bounds because, end of the day, they are at the core of everything. I’m hoping we can get a few programmers to post here in the forums because their work is fascinating and, let’s face it, utterly key to every element of the game.

Thanks for pointing this out, naiasonod. Spot on!

At the very least, I hope someone brings them cake and cookies down in whatever passes for their monkey pit.

Programmers often have to be reminded to eat. Have a heart – don’t let your programming staff forget to do things like eat, shave, go home at least bi-weekly and occasionally observe real sunlight!

Cookies. Brownies. I make a decent cookie and a pretty darned nice brownie. You’ve inspired me for the New Year.

I’m hoping we can get a few programmers to post here in the forums because their work is fascinating and, let’s face it, utterly key to every element of the game.

Thanks for pointing this out, naiasonod. Spot on!

Edit: This holiday season reminds me of others where programmers have had to step up to analyze urgent situations, even spending New Year’s Day on a major issue back several years ago. Of any team member, it’s likely to be a programmer whom we have to drag out of bed in the middle of the night. So Dwayna Bless ’em, every one!

First, we would never share “geRms” with our players! Secondly, this is just entirely bogus. If we were to offer such a reward, we’d make sure you knew about it through our website. Please do not click any links in anything that is questionable. As far as I know, we do not send clickable links unless you request something, like a password reset or assistance through Customer Support. Any e-mail coming to you unbidden should be viewed very, very skeptically.

If you have any questions about an e-mail or in-game mail that you receive, hold off on doing anything until you check with Customer Support.

Thank you for a positive thread, and thanks to everyone who contributed thoughtful responses.

Must of what y’all said strikes home with me. Yes, of course it does, I love this game so much! But FWIW, here’s my list (and it’s my opinion so let’s not debate, hmmm?) in no particular order:

  • Diversity of races
  • Broad range of character professions
  • Skills. Enough variety to be effective and fun; not so much that I feel I’m forever the noob for not knowing the intricacies.
  • Armor and weapons. Way more than I ever will need personally, but what a great way for each player to make his/her character individual and personally “just right.”
  • The Trading Post — I really like using it. I confess: I cackle in glee when a merchant offers 40 copper and my item goes for 2 silver on the TP. (And I like the security for trades, too!)
  • The music. A wonderful blend of existing themes and new ones. There are times I just stop to listen.
  • PvP and WvW: Amazing stuff, to join or to watch. I am awed by how good some players are!
  • The Living World. It’s pretty amazing to see such a significant amount of content get added, for free. (Sure, there was a “cost” in emotion — blast you, Scarlet! — and I still mourn for Lion’s Arch and await its return to glory. What can I say, I <3 Lion’s Arch!)
  • The world world. I have never been in a game where I so want just to be there. I love the art. I love the cultural differences in the regions. I love the art. I love the vistas (and I told Daniel Dociu as much at our Christmas party this year — what a great way to stand back and really see the world!) Oh, and did I mention I love the art?

This is not a “Aren’t we great” post. This is not a “it’s my job, I better say something” post. This is a post from the heart to express admiration and respect for those who created and continue to create an amazing game. And to share a nod of understanding with players who love it as much as I do.

Hey guys, I think this is a very nice and helpful thread. In order to highlight it for the devs, I changed the title so it stands out a bit more. Other than that, the thread remains as it was… nothing to see here, post along, post along.

Now opening the TP freezes and then closes the game on a mac.

Can you please submit a ticket to Customer Support if you are still having this issue? This report is different from the errors that we’ve resolved with the BLTC today.
