Hey everybody,

There were a bunch of great questions submitted on this topic across several disciplines. Because we had to tap several teams for answers to your questions, and many of the people on those teams are quite busy currently, we have made the decision to postpone both posting the answers and starting the next topic by one week. This will allow us to gather more answers from the teams to a wider variety of your questions.

Answers to the current questions and the thread for questions on the new topic will be posted on Friday, March 28.

There are no age or country restrictions like there were for PAX. The reason for that being is that this is not a LAN tournament.

Anyone can sign up.

Edit: With the obvious exception of what Lux said, you must be 13 to play the game.

Hi, guys…and Veron in particular. I just wanted to let you know that I hear you. In-studio, we talk a lot about how to make the experience unique to each player via branching conversations and the like. I’m sure you understand that this is much more complex than it looks on the surface, especially because it’s impossible to account for every possible combination of PC history.

It has gotten even more complex with the Living World. There simply isn’t enough time to write, edit, voice, and localize a branch for every possible thing you may have done or title you may have received, and so we have to pick our battles.

We apply branches based on your order quite often, and we have branches on the main characters based on whether you already know them or are just meeting them. There is also a ton of content out there to congratulate you if you killed Scarlet. We worked extra hard to make sure this was so. We couldn’t go through and change all the NPCs, however. That would have been a monumental undertaking.

Sometimes, the number of branches we include are invisible to people because they only see one of the branches.

I do hear you, though, and I agree. We do as much of this as we possibly can. We’re always discussing strategies for how to do more. Going forward, you will find that the Living World content is much more in-line with your experience in the Personal Story. Thanks so much for your well-thought-out feedback.

Really? A legendary for winning a single tournament while others have to farm 100s of hours for one? Disgusting. Guess Anet only knows extremes with rewards, either almost nothing or precursors/legendaries lol.

The players who will win this tournament SURELY have spent 100s of hours perfecting their craft and strategies, without earning legendaries for it in the process.

We are tipping our hats to those that have put the time and dedication into PvP, and have earned this as a reward.

We’re not just handing them out.

Gifts are always successful. There is no ‘refuse’ step or ‘return’ step, much like there isn’t a refuse or return on purchases for yourself. (except probably even more strict since we wouldn’t allow you to request an item be removed from someone else) . Once the gift, and message, appear in the mail the purchase is considered complete.

The only way to even approximate refusing would be to delete the delivery mail or the item delivered. Which would be treated the same as any other item deletion.

You really think if a new player is able to select from a pool of traits he is fine but if he gets 1 new trait per line he is lost? Come on.

Again, this system is forward looking. If we just unlocked the 40 new traits now, what about next time? It will always just be X more. We have to draw a line somewhere, and here is probably the best place to start.

No. If you have more options than your opponent, then you are potentially more powerful because at worst you can have the same build as him.

That isn’t the worst case scenario, you could just as well have an inferior build because you chose options that don’t work well together or with your play style. More options make coming up with good builds increasingly difficult, especially for beginners, because there are so many more things to consider and each must be weighed against alternative choices (opportunity cost.)

Plus, “barring any balance issues” is actually a big deal. You can bet these will cause balance issues (unless they’re intentionally bad like the new healing skills).

Definitely a concern, but that will mean little to new players who don’t know the current state of balance anyways.

But lets say I wanted to play my friend’s spec, because it’s really good. But I can’t, because I don’t have certain traits unlocked. That to me feels really bad.

This exact scenario is on our radar, and we definitely want to make it possible. Hopefully you’ll get a better idea of what we have in mind when we talk about the new rewards system.

PvP gives us a tiny bit of coin. No matter how much you play pvp, you won’t be able to make as much as your average pveer. What’s the point in implementing “horizontal” progression when pveers can unlock the new traits multiple times faster than pvpers?

That is a valid concern, one worthy of its own thread. I should mention that this is only part of the rewards we have planned. We should have a blog post about that coming out soon™, but I’m not sure where it is in the schedule.

snip.

Please do not presume to speak for all players. As a PvP player, I disagree with you, and I know others that do as well.

If you want to turns this into a numbers game, please do keep in mind that the vast majority of PvP players play PvE and WvW as well. We definitely want to make the game fun and enjoyable for PvP-only players as well, but we need to keep a broader context when designing systems.

Is there at least a way to obtain those traits without spending money in PvP? For instance, back in GW1, you were able to unlock skills with factions, whose main purpose was that.

It would be great to allow players in the new reward system to be able to unlock those traits without paying gold, which can be spent in a lot of other ways (and trait isn’t exactly the way I want to spend golds on).

It could be, for instance, by paying tournament win tokens to a vendor?

I know it’s something we were discussing when we were talking about the new reward system, but I do not recall were we landed. I will bring it up with the team again. I know I’d like to see it.

So Justin just confirmed that sPvP will be vertical progression. You need to unlock abilities. I’m sorry, but unlocking new traits = vertical progression to me.

I have to disagree. If it meant more skills available to you at one time while you are playing, then yes it would be vertical, but that just isn’t the case. You get more trait choices, not more traits applied to your character.

Then why make a distinction? If PvP can happily go along with players getting 12/13 traits per line, why add an extra layer of frustration and difficulty instead of giving them 13/13 traits per line? It’s obviously nothing to do with easing new players in.

If it were only an additional trait, you’d more of a have a point, but we’re introducing this system with the future in mind. I can’t speak for the Skills and Combat teams long turn plans, but I know I would be disappointed if we stopped with just these new traits.

Horizontal progression is a nice concept… but it’s one that I’ve never seen mentioned on the PvP forums, only the PvE ones. If you want to get more players in to PvP, somehow I don’t think keeping back build options is the way to go about it.

Horizontal progression is very common, even in PvP games. Personally, I think one of the reason’s PvP rewards seem somewhat hollow is that we have no real progression beyond looks. I think you would be hard pressed (outside one-off games like most FPS and RTSs) to find a successful game without progression. As a PvP player, I love this change (disclaimer: I had no design input) and can’t wait for the 15th.

Come on guys, lets be more productive here. Saying we don’t care isn’t just wrong, it shuts down and discourages dialog between developers and players.

Don’t get me wrong, you can certainly express your opinions and frustrations, but just because we are heading in a direction you personally don’t agree with doesn’t mean we don’t care or that we are ignoring you.

Now lets get this thread back on track.

As Roy mentioned in another thread, all the current traits will remain unlocked in PvP, even for new players. It is only new traits that need to be unlocked, and you will not have to PvE to obtain them.

Also, this system is designed for horizontal progression. Unlocking traits, or what have you, won’t (at least shouldn’t, barring any balance issues) make you more powerful, they simply give you a wider range of builds and allow you to better tune your character to your play style. Many, many successful games ease players into options, and, in my opinion, trait unlocking isn’t any different.

I understand some of you are worried that we’re just adding stuff and ignoring existing problems. I can assure you, as I sit within earshot of the Skills and Combat team, that they are very aware of this and have no plans to ignore existing issues.

To attempt to clear up some confusion: all outgoing heals from the elementalist will be increased by 25% for all receiving allies. Your outgoing regeneration is increased, your healing skills, your evasive arcana, your water blast finishers, etc. The trait will be offering an option to directly support your allies in this fashion.
This is not a pulse or aura like Battle Presence that increases everyone’s healing power, this trait directly affects the elementalist’s healing effectiveness based on their current healing ability.
I hope this helps clarify a bit.

Question regarding report investigation~

Just for the record, I assume full responsibility for what I did and this is not an appeal.

I was suspended for 3 days for using foul language. I have done this on several occasions openly, and only now was finally punished for it.

My question is: Is this 3-day suspension my punishment for every instance of my inappropriate behavior up until this point? So as long as I don’t do it again I should not have to worry about being suspended again?

First of all, forum members, you know better than to speculate and guess about policy! But yes, much of what you’ve offered is accurate. Let me get into a bit more detail.

Dunkin – if you were given a suspension, first of all, thank you for assuming responsibility. It’s a breath of fresh air to see someone “own up” and be nice about the actions that our GMs need to take to keep things on an even keel.

Secondly, reports result in investigations that, when verified, can result in a warning or a suspension. I would imagine that a second report for … shall we call them “verbal errors?”… in the same timeframe would be covered by the one suspension. That is, if you committed a few errors around the same time, the one suspension should suffice, because a second investigation would show the agent that you already had been suspended. I don’t think we do “triple jeopardy” for the same day’s choices.

To answer the question, suspensions stay on the account records forever. What others may have been trying to tell you is that if a player is found to be guilty of infractions in a short timeframe — like three chat violations in a month — the time-outs will get longer. And with enough suspensions, the account may be closed. (Info on the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes page.

Basically, for the future — and I believe you will do this — choose wisely.

If the highest offer for a shredded rag is 1s, then there will be people that have offered less than 1s. these people are not offering 50c because that’s how much they think shredded rags are worth or can’t afford more – these people are offering 50c because shredded rags used to be worth 50c and their offer is hella old. Most likely, among the players offering 1s are the same people who are currently offering 50c. It’s quicker to just place a new offer than increase an old offer. Plus, if the price ever goes down, they will be the first that they get sold to.

This is a very broad generalization that I don’t believe is true. Be careful not to assume that individual experience comprise a “most likely” situation.

A couple of points to consider:
A Trading Post is not an Auction House and that is an intentional decision.
When a player posts a buy or sell order, that player is making a public statement. I am willing to pay this money or trade this item at this price. Those who offer the highest willingness to pay get matched first. I don’t see anything but market failures and weird scams coming from a system that allows arbitrary trading. Our system now works quickly and efficiently and gives (virtually) everyone what they’re asking for.
This system was not designed intentionally to enhance the quantity of gold sunk, that’s simply a byproduct of an efficient market.

I feel quite positive about the changes, albeit with some reservations about the delay in getting to the traits. I’m at 12 80’s now, and nearly 40 on my 3rd Mesmer, because I always want to have someone I’m leveling in order to get that feeling of progress. So far I’ve managed different weapon/trait builds for each one … anyway! Question: You didn’t say pre-existing 80’s get all traits unlocked, you said pre-existing characters. So my new Mesmer, assuming he doesn’t hit 80 by Apr 15, does he get all traits, or just some? How does this work for characters created before Apr 15 but not yet 80 as of the patch?

Any character that was created before the feature pack build will be grandfathered into the system; meaning that they will have traits 1 through 12 of each line unlocked. The new 13 traits will need to be unlocked by everyone. Any character created after the build will be required to unlock all of their traits via content or purchasing trait guides.

Everyone in PvP will have access to traits 1 through 12, even on new characters. New traits will be initially locked in PvP and require an unlock similar to when we added the new healing skills. Once a trait is unlocked it is unlocked for all game modes. Hope that clears it up a bit.

Unlocking traits through content is a great idea though.

I’d even remove the option to buy them from vendors.

While we think going out into the world to unlock traits is a cool reward for completing specific content, we wanted to have an alternative option in case that wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. There are many different kinds of players. =)

This is a UI bug. You only get 5 rank points per top-stat, but each UI alert is showing your total rank point gain from top-stats. This would have started happening after we made rewards time-based. We’ll work on getting this fixed. Thanks for the report!

What about the fact that the Rank Points you get doesn’t add up for the Rank Point Ttitles? Gladiator, Mercenary, Avenger, Ransacker, Marauder, Ravager etc.. People who’s done tPvP has been leveling without getting these titles. Hotjoiners are R35 with Ransacker, tPvPers are R50 with 5/10 Ransacker.. Shouldn’t be like this.

This has been addressed previously, and will have a retroactive fix.

Thanks for the updates! Really excited about these changes!

Could you please also address concerns regarding early leveling difficulties for new players (especially for classes like Ele and Mesmers) since important defensive traits are now only obtainable starting at level 30 rather than at level 15?

We have done some tuning on monster stats pre-80 to account for players having less traits, and stats from traits. We wanted to push back traits to give characters more meaningful progression up to 80 and keep things simpler for a new player to learn over time.
