There is no ‘desperate’ need Romo. It is simply something I am interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on. The discussion so far has been very good.

Also please don’t assume that just because we are discussing or not discussing something that it either is or isn’t being given attention.

Chris

That’s completely understood Chris.

My intention is not assuming anything at all, I assure you. But with so little attention we’ve gotten over the past few months, I’m very nervous about what message you guys going to get from us.

I love fractals for what they are, even at the state they are right now, even though I still cringe every time I see that underground tunnel after a loading screen.

I hope you don’t misunderstand my stand on the topic at hand. I care for this part of the game more than any other area, even though I don’t spend as much time in it as I used to before the last patch.

I’m just glad that the conversation is being heard and hopefully thoroughly reviewed with attention it deserves. I apologize if I ever sound out of line.

Thanks for your clarification Romo. The conversation is very much being heard. CDI is an integral part of how we develop and we value it very much.

Also thank you very much for your passion in this area and your commitment toward this CDI. I am hoping we can continue to discuss many ideas around this topic.

I would appreciate it if you could put some ideas forward for Leader-board mechanics.

Why do we still desperately trying to put in something that Fractals doesn’t need? It was a bad idea then, it’s still a bad idea now. There were many people voicing their concerns about their fractal habits being seen by the public. The discussions went on so far as people asking if they could opt out of the Leaderboards all together. That was never addressed just like many other topics around Fractured update.

I think the idea should be just scrapped and forgotten. The time should be instead invested in redesigning one particular fractal level that doesn’t even have to be mentioned to be understood which one is being called out. Along with new rewards system and perhaps new items.

In other words, please don’t waste man-hours (which you will most likely have a finite number of, that can be put towards fractals) on something that majority of fractal players never asked for nor wanted to begin with.

Instead let’s focus on the major things: balancing and rewards, because that’s where the main issues are laying right now. Not the lack of Leaderboards.

Please, if you can discuss it with us. What would you like to see changed? How you feel about time investment in fractals?

There is no ‘desperate’ need Romo. It is simply something I am interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on. The discussion so far has been very good.

Also please don’t assume that just because we are discussing or not discussing something that it either is or isn’t being given attention.

Colin im going to let you in on a secret that is worth tens of thousands of dollars, but since I like you ill give it to you for free.

Put in capes and the people will come. Especially good trimmed capes for the upper tiers.

Everyone will be jelly and want to know how to get one and if you can only get them through pvp people will come. So they would be good rewards.

I love me some capes, agreed!

CHAUNCEY! CHAUNCEY!

So that Logan gag was something we came up with during some downtime in the VO booth. I wanted us to put an Easter egg in the game where once a day he’d leave his office in DR and patrol the city just being a jerk to people as a kind of anger therapy since his job as Captain of the Seraph is so stressful. The commandeering of the lollipop was one such scenario.

There are other scenes that go with that one, but they’re outside our ESRB rating, unfortunately.

The Fancy Cat Competition stuff is one of many bits that didn’t get used. The performances from Yuri Lowenthal, Kirk Thornton, Kari Wahlgren, Sam Riegel were spot on. Maybe we’ll get to it one day….

Not sure if this is the right thread to say it, but the major problem of why i don’t like pvp is because isn’t a complete deathmatch. It’s a team effort to capture things instead of a war to kill the other team before yours die. I’d love an Arena of 1vs1 deathmatch or something like that, with no teams.

Technically it isn’t no, this is a thread to discuss leagues and ways to accomplish successful leagues. Pop back and read the directions on CDI threads and it’ll help you understand how to use this format. Since you asked nicely, I’ll help you get started on how you could phrase it in a way that’d be ok for this discussion →

- I’d really love to participate in a PvP league, but I simply wouldn’t do so unless it was a death match based league. If it was a death match based league, I’d love to see the league function like this: <your ideas go here using the format on page 1>

Thanks!

I’m curious why threads that simply point out negative aspects of sPvP are closed for being “unconstructive”, yet threads that simply point out the positive aspects (like this one) are not.

The negative threads tend to devolve into name-calling, personal attacks, and trolling. That is why they get closed. Which is the reason this one might, so let’s help bring this back on-topic to the original post.

Either the writers got some help, or they gotten a lot better. Whatever it is it’s working

We’re focusing a bit more on the presentation of the writing now. In the past, we wrote and voiced a number of scenes that never got built. There were story and character moments for planned instances that, unfortunately, got cut. What was especially difficult for the writers and narrative designers was that feeling of “I wrote all this stuff that would make the story more cohesive but nobody can experience it.” We learned a lot over the past year about how we could do a better job of conveying the story, so we partnered with a number of designers and learned some basic implementation skills.

Really, the root of the issue was communication between disciplines. The changes you’re noticing are a direct result of the increased collaboration between narrative, design, art, and audio. The story moments in the past three releases came about through many meetings where we’d all talk about character moments and plot points, and how we can best portray them with our tech.

We experimented with using instanced and open world scenes, and tried to place those moments in and around gameplay such that they were in the direct line of sight but weren’t heavily gated. This is all basic game narrative stuff that is common in development, but something we’ve had to experiment with due to the unique nature of our platform. And yeah, we’re also trying to seed more ambient lore that ties back to the current episode plot because it makes the world feel more alive. The fact that people are noticing these changes makes me incredibly happy.

How is it that you don’t (or refuse to) understand that good, quality, and well-made pvp will attract players in and off itself, and that rewards should really just be that final cherry on top (unless we’re talking millions of $$$, I guess, but that would still not make a pvp ‘good’), or at least better thought out (prestige/fame bring SO much more to the table than gold/money, although the former shouldn’t preclude the latter, and they are also not mutually exclusive in any kind of manner).

While I agree we still have a lot of work to continue to improve the PvP experience as well, this is a thread dedicated entirely to talking about leagues and how they would function, and my entire post was focused on the discussion of rewards within those leagues.

As for competitive and casual and my definitions, we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one! Regardless, I think the more important discussion and the entire point of this thread is: What players do we have who play PvP and how do we make leagues that motivate them, and what players do we have who don’t currently play PvP who would: and how do we motivate them.

While I understand your point and think discussions around game modes and types that can succeed is a great topic for us to continue to discuss, since we’ve done so once already, I’d encourage you to remember the goal of this CDI discussion. Remember, this is your chance to discuss leagues (and in particular, my question was rewards for those leagues) not everything else you have concerns with.

I will add a fun fact: When rewards were updated in December, PvP saw a 40% growth in player numbers that has stayed solid ever since, the largest single jump in player participation in any game content type as a result of an update we’ve ever seen. This growth was almost entirely players who didn’t play PvP before, who suddenly became interested once it was rewarding, and I’d argue it’s not even that rewarding yet. To discount rewards as meaningless might be true to you as a player, but we consistently hear very different feedback from other players, and they make this very clear in their actions. We need to make sure players who truly care about prestige and being the best are catered to, and we need a way for players who aren’t that yet can become excited and invested and someday potentially become part of the first.

I’d encourage you (in this thread) to focus your brainstorming and ideas around how we can make leagues that you’d be excited to play in, since that’s the entire point of this discussion! If prestige/fame is what motivates you for example, tell us what kind of prestige and fame systems you’d like to see in a league?

Official state of skill lag and server optimizations

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Keep in mind that there are a few very different issues being mixed up here. “Skill Lag” as discussed in the original post here is referring directly to Game Server CPU usage. I want to ensure we are all on the same page, so here’s a little refresher:

  • Game Server CPU usage (which is the #1 issue discussed here)
    • Let’s be honest, Guild Wars 2 has a lot of moving parts, and the Game Server is pretty much always in the thick of it.
  • Player/Client → GameServer bandwidth
    • Most cases usually come from players having other heavy traffic going on while playing the game, weak WiFi signals, or their ISP is having difficulties.
  • GameServer → Player/Client bandwidth
    • This can happen sometimes in our datacenters during peak hours or when hardware is having difficulties, but normally resolves very quickly.
  • Client frame-rate
    • CPU and/or GPU bound hardware
    • Extremely heavy combat, dense populated areas, and/or effect spam (which causes a lot of overdraw, which can cripple even the beefiest hardware )

So how about what you actually want to hear… When are more improvements coming?

Like always, I don’t have a date to toss around (yet), but I do have a couple things that are well on their way, and hopefully will make it in the next few releases (fingers crossed). So, what can you expect?

Another round of Game Server optimizations

With most of the previous improvements to the Game Server, I’ve tried to focus on improving combat responsiveness. Its just not a fun experience when you try to execute a skill and either: A: Nothing happens, or B: It just doesn’t execute in a timely manor (which is arguably worse). The changes coming should make a nice impact on content that has large densities of creatures and/or zergs of players.

Though, not all “Skill Lag” scenarios are a product of the bullet points stated above. There are other causes of input delay, and a good example of this would be Ranger Pets. I’m sure plenty of you agree that their responsiveness has been arguably, well, next to none. I recently spent time working on improving the interaction Rangers have with their Pet using the Command Bar. I’d love to hear your feedback on this once it ships. Issues like this are something I definitely plan to continue improving upon (Necromancer Minions also come to mind).

Another similar issue that has been extremely frustrating in combat is trying to hit objects like Engineer Turrets (I’m still having nightmares of Graveling Burrows). Or, rather, turrets getting hit by attacks that seemingly shouldn’t have hit them, resulting in what seems to be “lag”. This is something that myself and a designer spent some time tuning, and the results are pretty self-explanatory. I believe some of these changes are actually coming as soon as the next release, though this will only affect attackable objects that don’t have navigation-blocking collision (turrets, some siege equipment, etc).

And, of course, there’s more non-performance/optimization related improvements well on the way that’ll increase the general experience and responsiveness of combat. An example would be Mesmer Illusions/Clones/Phantasms that unreliably attack their target – Warden, I’ve got my eye on you!

Lastly, client frame-rate and memory usage is still being actively worked on. I’ll have to follow up on when more improvements will ship, but I know there are some exciting things in the works.

Glory booster circular logic

Why did ppl stack boosters in the first place?

Some people got too many from PvP and just couldn’t spend them all, others got them from achievement chests and black lion chests and never used them because they simply didn’t play PvP.

The people who get kittened the most from the removal of the boosters are the ones who bought them for gems and never got to use them and the ones who got them from black lion chests because they could have gotten a booster that they would actually use.

However, one could argue that PvPers get kittened as well because the daily PvP achievement rewards where balanced around giving glory boosters. If the PvP dailies have nothing to replace glory boosters they will simply have inferior rewards to the PvE dailies.

People who bought boosters can file a ticket for a refund. See: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/March-18th-Glory-change-FAQ/

so is my card permanently blocked then?, that and my girlfriends? – just to clarify

and i’m not sure about buying physical copies gaile, due to a case of australianitis
https://ebgames.com.au/pc-140036-Guild-Wars-2-PC , the regular copy of the game is 20$ more than it is anywhere else, and other australian retailers match that price.

I’m sorry that I don’t know the answer about the card or cards. I think that the agent who is communicating with you via the ticket would be able to look into that for you. Sometimes the issue comes from the bank or credit card issuing company. Sometimes it comes from our billing provider. And often, if the customer calls the bank and say “Look, I had this problem and I want you to make sure that I can use your card to purchase from ArenaNet” the bank/CC company can make it so.

I want to hasten to add that I am not a member of the Purchase and Billing Team, and I’m not at all savvy about all the different elements of credit cards. I know that every entity involved has to take care because CC fraud is so high. I also have observed that sometimes, communicating directly with the CC provider can help. But again, the agents can (and will be happy to) tell you more. I do wish you luck — we’d love to welcome your girlfriend to our game!

indeed gaile, my girlfriend was heartbroken that such a storm happened to her, and i convinced her to try one last time today, adamant about this game and it being worth a try, i even went to use my personal card, considering the email the support staff sent had said that the cards being marked as fraudulent/suspicious was invalid and had been fixed.

But it wasn’t

I am very sorry. These issues are so often completely outside our control but it’s encouraging that often we can make it work. I see the agent assured you that if you do decide to purchase, the account will be there waiting for your girlfriend. Also, a purchase through a local shop (if possible for you) would get this resolved with a simply update to your ticket asking to add the retail code. Again, I’m sorry for this and each time this happens, we do our best to try to right this for the customer!

I also would like Fractals (and to a lesser extent, Dungeons) to evolve to allow for 2-5 player scaling. I know they are currently designed for 5 people, but I’d like to see the balance code reworked in such a way that 2 people could run through a fractal and be rewarded for that level scale. Obviously 5-man fractals would reward more, but I personally just want to run through them with my wife…currently that isn’t possible.

Call it “Casual-mode” for Fractals.

Personally I would like to see Fractals be able to be 5+ as well with associated risk/reward mechanics.

Actually, if there’s reward discussion…

Proposal Overview: Introduce a wider variety of items into fractal loot tables, biasing it in favour of karma, crafting materials, and items with high resale value.

Proposal Goal: Make fractal drops weirder, differentiate fractal rewards from dungeons and the open world, and create a source of T6 materials that is more efficient than farming gold from dungeons and buying them on the TP.

Functionality: Instead of the normal, blue and green weapon-heavy loot tables, fractal enemies would be more likely to drop retired living world items (e.g. ballot papers, molten scrap), Set 1 miniatures, karma and luck items, and consumables that can be bought for karma (e.g. rocks, Ogre Pet Whistles). They would also drop Mist-Infused Bags, which would contain T6 (and sometimes T5) crafting materials (including inscriptions), living world materials (quartz, sprockets, spores) and ectoplasms. They would never contain rare crafting materials (i.e. lodestones).

A player’s fractal reward scale would determine how likely they are to get the more unusual drops, and how likely they are to find a Mist-Infused Bag instead of the bag that enemy type normally drops.

Sub Proposal: In addition, very rarely, players may find a Mist Crystal of Valor, which when consumed awards a repeatable achievement worth 1 point.

Risks: Increasing the variety of dropped items may make bag space much more of an issue. Introducing a source for some items (Set 1 miniatures) may cause the price to plummet, making them unrewarding as drops. Increasing the supply of T6 mats also increases the efficiency of farming up gold and then buying them on the TP. The algorithm that decides drops may, in practice, prevent many of the drops unique to fractals from appearing.

Absolutely we can discuss rewards.

1) Does this mean the Kraits were driven out of the ocean homes by the elder sea dragon 250 years ago, so they were forced to live on land?

2) If the Kraits were xenophobic 250 years ago, and as of today they are no longer xenophobic, does that mean they are no longer the force of pure evil that we thought they are?

The answer to your first question is in this wiki page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unending_Ocean

Keep in mind the “about”. There’s a wiggle factor of 10-15 years either before or after that number that you should keep in mind. In other words, that number isn’t exactly correct.

As to your second question—the krait are evil. I don’t see them joining the Pact any time soon.

The krait are still xenophobic. But, xenophobia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenophobia) is a fear of or hatred for any person or group that is not like the accepted group. It’s racism. In the same way white-supremicists are xenophobic.

They’re not so xenophobic that they won’t even consider taking slaves. They do take slaves. A lot. So they do deal with other races on a regular basis. No, this isn’t an alliance with them, but it is using them. They have proven they’re willing to use other races, if it suits their purposes.

With regard to the article by Ree Soesbee, that particular article was written on May 4, 2011, while we were still developing the game (launched over a year later).

The article provides a general description of krait based on their personality profile and history. You might call it a preview. We (Ree, Jeff, and the entire team) did more development of the krait after that article went live.

Ree even says in the article, “The krait were featured in the original Guild Wars game, and we very much wanted to continue their story in Guild Wars 2. We knew so little about their culture and society; as we were expanding the game into new underwater regions, it was exciting to add new depth (pun intended) to an existing race.” Though she speaks in the past tense in this article, the adding new depth didn’t stop there.

You’ll find references in-game to how quaggans were driven from their homes by krait that had been driven from theirs.

This is a really good point:

I personally think a well made fractal either tells its own story in the case of the Ascalonian city fractal, or allows you to conjure up a story in your head for it. The cliffside fractal does this to perfection for example.

And one we should always aspire to regardless of additional exposition of law.

Chris

I do believe that more things can be added to help us conjure up a story though. Perhaps some more elaborate cave drawings or tapestries that tell a story without words. (Which leaves it up to us to interpret them)

I’ve been transformed into a dolphin quite a few times… but it doesn’t make me wonder why. (Up until now) But if there was a shiny glowing largos that showed up as we arrive that starts singing and turns us into dolphins … that would make me wonder. Or if we were to swim through an enormous trumpet that turns us into dolphins… that would also make my mind wander.

Things in fractals can be crazy and random, but I prefer the things that make me wonder. Like that colossus in cliffside, which is one of the most impressive and epic unexplained stories I’ve ever seen. This is not just a giant, the giant is a prisoner, and guarded by priests. These 3 ingredients are enough to make my brain start spinning stories. While the purposeless krait, giant jellyfish and dolphins don’t connect into story-spinning at all.

I love the passion and drive to further expose lore through the Fractals. This is something we will be super mindful about moving forward. It is after all a key pillar of the Fractals.

Gryphon — We will address your friend’s ticket in the order in which it was received. If he was not involved in a breach of the UA or the RoC, we will hasten to reinstate the account, be sure of that.

With all due respect, I cannot agree with your concept that we should take action on a cheater — and ShiningSquirrel pointed out, one of the most damaging types — on a ramping scale. While each case is reviewed and may be handled somewhat differently, establishing a formalized “ramping scale” could be (indeed, would be) perceived as “You get XX cheats for free.” Better to have a clear and easily-understood policy about infractions, I believe.

Please understand: We do not take action on an account to show “we’re in control” or “we have the power.” We take action on accounts that need to be suspended or terminated for the good of the game and our community of gamers.

DeceiverX — Investigations actually can take a great deal of time, just so you know. Agents have spent hours, even half a day or more, investigating an appeal that only confirmed that the account was rightfully terminated and not eligible for reinstatement. I’m glad you agree that the ToS should be taken seriously. Indeed it should!

If this account was hacked, I’m sure we’ll hear from the account owner. Contacting us because you believe someone else has been hacked isn’t really a prudent use of agent’s time because we would only be able to help the owner directly.

I appreciate your concern; I think it’s very nice of you to want to help but I don’t think submitting a ticket of this nature would be effective.

Thanks for understanding.

Hi Folks,

Good discussion. I am enjoying it. The discussion about re rolling is very insightful.

I would appreciate it if you could put some ideas forward for Leader-board mechanics.

Specifically in regard to the fact that I was unhappy with us putting out Leader-boards in their previous functionality (having lots of folks sitting at lvl 50 was not ideal) and therefore the feature was held back.

Obviously we have given Level 50 Leader diversification a lot of thought but it would be awesome to hear your proposals. Note there are a lot of logic problems in the solutions in this area so please do think about associated risks.

Cheers

Chris

Nice thread. I don’t know how many of these issues we can feasibly tackle, but I’m sure you’ll see at least a few fixes come from this.

The missing star is part of the bug and is being addressed in the upcoming fix. The new POIs simply kicked the bug where it counts and got the star working again. It is my understanding that we shouldn’t lose our stars in the future.

Guys,

We simply cannot answer this question. Telling you guys specific release dates for these things has never been something we have done (unless we know everything is bug-free), because if something comes up that means the build needs to be pushed back, everyone gets super upset about it. We’ve seen that it actually hurts the game more to make promises like that.

However, if you read the interview from Colin that was done by Eurogamer, he gives a ballpark time frame if you think about it.

When [Living World Season One] ends [on 4th March], we’re going to take a break for a little bit and then we’re going to do one really big feature patch that is more akin to what people see from some of our [MMO] competitors,

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-14-you-thought-that-was-it-for-guild-wars-2

Due to the size and scope of the final four story releases in season one, the next round of major features will be bundled together into a large “feature only” release that will come after the first season of the Living World 2014 has finished.

I think there has been good discussion around the concepts of world pride and how the changes in EotM affect that. Let’s pivot to a different concept from EotM and how it could apply to WvW.

I’m curious what you all think about choke points as strategic ideas. I don’t think we’d ever want a map that was just a bunch of canyons, this isn’t Sparta or Thermopylae, but having areas that make it harder for large groups to get through if they are well-defended creates gameplay. Think of a tower that guards the only pass through a canyon, rather than bridges everywhere. Is that something that, in moderation, could provide for more varied and strategic gameplay?

For the purposes of the question, think in terms of building a new map from scratch, rather than retrofitting the current maps.

  • Please for the love of god remove “rolling,” not only is swamp my least favorite fractal but it is now impossible to get any of the other “initial” fractals such as underwater. A couple of the tier 2 fractals can be dropped to tier 1 (aetherblade hideout) and rolling needs to be eliminated

How would you prevent restarting the run? Even if you could, what about people splitting up and having 5 roll attempts? Very likely to get a favorable map.

To be honest, I would appreciate if people focused on how to implement their ideas. It’s easy to have nice ideas like “fix problems, add fun stuff, make people happy” but actually implementations might be much trickier.

Like all the people telling how dredge or rewards have to be fixed. I’m sure they are well aware of that. But what they would (probably) like to hear is how they should be fixed.

I agree Wethospu. It is much more useful for folks raising issues if they provide suggestions for how to fix said issues (-:

They should still be there at the very bottom (just above backpacks). You can also use the dropdown menu at the top right of the locker and select “PvP Salvage Materials”.

If they aren’t there, then perhaps you have hit a bug or forgotten to deposit them (if you salvaged on a different character).

Sorry, there is no such thing as a competitive casual player. There is just a casual player who plays to win, and a casual player who plays for fun/to kill time.
Moreover, ‘competitive’ usually implies you also have a regular team you play with, because you cannot really be competitive with 4 deadweights on your team…unless you’re up vs an opponent team of simlar skill level (read pve/beginners).

I think you’re using a different definition of competitive, and casual/hardcore than I would, so by your definition I agree with you, but using my own definitions I do not

We tend to think of our players in various categories, and one of the goals of any league system (or PvP in general) is to try and engage as many of those players as possible, because today’s casual player can be tomorrow’s top tourny player – if they reach the top.

My definitions, and why I think you need to think of rewards that motivate each of these groups to help encourage their participation, since they are often motivated by different things are:

Competitive Hardcore (the guy I set next to at work) – Want to win, and want to be the best. They fight for the top of the ladder, want to win tournaments, and be the best in the world.

Competitive Casual (Me) – Wants to win, don’t care bout being the best in the world and will never have time to do so, won’t ever be on top of the ladder. However, I want to be the best among players of my similar levels of interest/time, so any league that allows me to compete with people of similar skill sets/interest is one I’d participate in. If I have to also fight against the competitive hardcore, I likely wouldn’t participate. Has the potential to someday become competitive hardcore.

Casual (the gal who sits behind me at work) – Wants to play to unlock rewards, doesn’t really think they have a chance of winning or being very good and openly recognize it. Will play as long as the rewards exist, for example there are people who play PvP each day and get their daily, then run off to their next goal some place else in the game. Has the potential to someday become competitive casual.

And ideal league structure would provide motivation for people in each of these groups (by my definition of what they are) to maximize the player participation, and increase the odds that players in each category might move to a more dedicated category of player at some point.

Hope that helps explain in a bit more detail what I’m saying when I say competitive casual, and also what groups I think need to be included in a league structure – and why they may need different rewards based on their different motivations.

Understandable, but in another thread someone had made a thread about why the name Gray was blocked, and she got it unblocked or poked some GM or something to do it…

It doesn’t matter now though, I used the name Owlchaser instead which I like quite well. >.>

Actually, I like that name better, too!

Every now and then a name is quite mysteriously blocked and we honestly cannot tell why. Sometimes, later, it becomes available but we don’t have a way right now to force the availability of a name.

Thanks a lot for your understanding!
