I still love this line of Zojja’s: “Shut your talk-hole, bookah. Every time you open it, you drip stupid all over my floor.”

^Priceless! Asura have the best lines.

Here is some phrases/dialogue I came up with for an asura talking to a sylvari:

My bioluminescent bramble.

Wicked weed.

Why you positively pompous perennial.

Stop being a whiny vine and get over here.

My my, you’re quite vivacious for a talking vegetable aren’t you?

What’s wrong my lovelorn thorn? Someone put weed killer in your shampoo?

Scarlet Briar received an unusual permission, but it’s Omadd who negotiated with the Arcane Council for her to be able to attend the teachings of Asuran Colleges. She was then banned from Rata Sum and, considering what happened next with Scarlet, the Arcane Council will probably not make these exceptions anymore.

. . .

Asura definitely are able to work with other species, we see that a lot in the Pact, but Asura tends to keep their secrets for themselves, even among them. It’s better to sell a fish to an hungry man everyday than sell him a fishing lesson! Asuran krewes also hire other species as secretary, hunter, messenger, … Anything that can let them focus on the intellectual part without taking time to manage golem workers or do it themselves.

This is all great information! I’m finding it very helpful. I’m fleshing out the back story of my sylvari engineer who is fascinated by asuran technology and culture. If non-asura joining one of the colleges was permissable pre-Scarlet, I was going to have my engineer join the college of dynamics, but now I see that’s totally against lore. I like the idea of the asura being extremely guarded and my sylvari engineer trying to wear them down or grow on them (sorry I can never resist a pun) and failing—it creates more tension. Maybe she petitions to study at one of the colleges and is rejected, but she’s stubborn and determined, so she takes every opportunity to work with/for an asuran krewe she can to learn that way. Then when she moves on and joins the Durmand Priory, then the Pact, she hears about Scarlet. Hmmmm. Basically I just want my sylvari to be a huge asura fangirl who is not deterred at all by the asura and sylvari’s trouble past. She’s really curious about the asura, but I don’t want her to be all mega-genius-brilliant and mary-sue like Scarlet. I like the idea of her trying and failing to impress the asura because they don’t think she has anything of value to offer them, but being determined to prove them wrong.

So I have a few more questions:

Around when did Scarlet start studying with the asura? Was it a secret or would people have heard about prior to Scarlet going all psycho? I’m just wondering if my sylvari could have heard about Scarlet being admitted to the colleges at the time and gotten all excited and maybe a little jealous or if she would have only found out later after Scarlet went all rampagy??

Also, is the Inquest technically a college? Is it recognized by the other colleges as anyting other than a splinter group? How does it fit into the structure of Asuran society?

I’d be curious to know more about Scarlet’s relationship with the Inquest and asura in general. I missed out on much of the early living story.

Lets see your engineers!

Specifically we’re talking about Sylvari who were so weak willed that they left their home and enlisted in the Pact to fight and die against slavering undead monsters. Sounds pretty much like a bunch of folks really lacking in ‘character’ and ‘grit’, right?

You make a very good point. I am curious to see how the sylvari situation is handled going forward. As someone who plays a sylvari, I am curious to see how the storyline will be impacted and whether or not there will be an explanation as to why some sylvari are corrupted while others are not.

I always thought that the Asuras have xenophobic tendencies when it comes to share their knowledge.

That is the impression I got as well from reading the lore I could find, though I would say they have a superiority complex rather than “xenophobic.” They seem to honestly think that they are more intelligent, and therefore better, than all the other races combined. If a member of another race was to join one or more of the colleges, then they would have to demonstrate exceptional intelligence by asuran standards or have something that the asura wanted badly.

I can definitely see them hiring/recruiting other races as test subjects. Their first encounter with the sylvari ended in experimentation and I’ve seen them experiment on skritt and other races in game.

You are giving me a lot to think about.

FanFic/Role Play Help - Asura Dialogue

Asura have a wonderful talent for coming up with creative, and usually pretty insulting nicknames and endearments.

Here are a few examples:

“I love you too, my dulcet-toned honey-viper” – Kazz
“Empty-headed homonculus!” – Zojja
“Pusillanimous pinheads” – Player Character

I thought I’d create a thread for people to post their favorite in-game or best original asura nicknames, endearments, and insults. I’d particularly like to see nicknames, endearments, and insults aimed at the other races (especially the sylvari).

I’m writing some dialogue between two unlikely friends (a grumpy, acerbic asura and an energetic , optimistic sylvari) and could use some inspiration and asuran snarkiness.

I read that Scarlet Briar received “special dispensation” to study at all three asuran colleges (Dynamics, Statics, and Synergetics), but I am wondering if the special dispensation was given to allow a non-asura to attend an asuran college or to allow a student to apply/be accepted to all three colleges. I can’t recall any examples of non-asuran college members other than Scarlet, but I might not have been paying close enough attention. I am curious for role-playing/fanwork reasons, etc.

Is it unusual for an asura to be part of more than one college?

Has anyone seen any examples of non-asura npcs talking about being part of (or applying for membership in) one of the asura colleges other than Scarlet Briar?

Has anyone seen any examples of non-asuran members of asuran krewes?

How do you think asura would respond to non-asura joining a college or a krewe?

Behhh. 2/10 because the beard & helmet obscure half the face ~ you need to shave & take your hat off for a proper face rating! XP

I’m going to go with a 6/10. The nose is a little to long for my taste and the bridge is too thin. The result kind of makes her look like she has duck lips. I really like the eyes though. They are very pretty. The eyebrows are may be a little too slanted, but that could just be because the nose makes the face look a little pinched. I like the color choices though. I assume this is a mesmer based on the color scheme. I’m also not a big fan of the weak chin, but that might have more to do with the lighting. I think she’d look pretty with a slightly shorter/higher nose and a hairstyle that compliments her face shape a little more. She looks fairly young, with a little baby fat, but her eyes look like they’ve seen a lot and have a bit of a sultry edge. It’s an interesting combination.

Sorry, I didn’t know we aren’t allowed to post characters with beards or helmets on this forum—I was confused by the other posts featuring characters with beards and helmets.

Anyway, here is a photo of my character without a beard or a helmet, before he was finalized, because I’m too cheap to by a hairstyle kit so people can see him without a beard. Plus, the beard is an intentional part of his look, though honestly, I wish there were better beards for human males—this one is too wide and bushy at the base for my tastes, but you work with what you’ve got.

I have been thinking about making some tweaks though, so thanks for the feedback. I’m still not totally happy with the eyes. Any advice? I was thinking of decreasing their width, but I’m not sure. I wanted him to look older and have a somewhat gentle/sad expression.

Taimi, Jory and Kas and Offencive

in Living World

Posted by: M Steel.2574

M Steel.2574

Taimi -

I am not a physically disabled person, so my perspective is limited, but I like that Taimi’s disability is a part of who she is, but isn’t the only thing that defines her as a character. Anet could have chosen to focus on her disability and make it the catalyst of her actions throughout the story (i.e. her obsession with Scarlet is rooted in her desire to cure herself and walk again, etc.) or they could have gone with the stereotype that all people with disabilities are more compassionate because of the adversity they’ve had to overcome. Personally, I like that they haven’t gone in either of those directions (at least not yet). So far, Taimi’s motives and obsession with Scarlet seem very asuran. We’ve met a lot of asurans that act without thinking about consequences and think they know it all. I like that Taimi’s actions don’t seem to be driven by self-pity or false hope. She wants to analyze Scarlet’s tech because, like most Asura, she wants to be the bestest best most genius inventor extraordinaire of all time x2 with a cherry on top! Could her overzealous attitude have something to do with her condition and the fact that she has a greater sense of her mortality than most asura her age? I suppose it could, but it certainly isn’t her only motivation.

Braham -

Okay, Braham may not be the brains of the outfit and he may be a tad on the “bash first, smash later” side at times, but I’d argue that he’s the heart of the group and has grown as the story progressed. He is very much a norn. Norn culture is based heavily on personal achievement, glory, and physical prowess. And Braham certainly represents these aspects of his culture, but he also undermines them too. For example, he encourages Rox to take down Scarlet at the expense of his own personal glory and he sticks around to keep Taimi company while she fixes her golem even though she is basically just some strange, bratty, kid at that point. My point is that Braham is not all brawn. He’s shown himself to be a loyal friend and has a nurturing side as well. I’m really enjoying his current story arc. Suddenly he’s been injured and Rox is mother-henning him , but he isn’t snapping at her or rushing headlong into fights with impossible odds. He’s been very gentle and understanding of Rox’s feelings, which is refreshing. Yeah, he’s the muscle, but he’s also more than that.

Kasmeer and Jory -

Okay, the hot asian—err canthan—femme fatale and the bubbly blonde bombshell are classic stereotypes. I’m not going to argue that. And they do seem like a step backwards given that GW2 already has Caithe and Faolian, a more compelling and complex lesbian couple. If they really wanted to make a statement they should have made Majory and Kasmeer both men—male/male relationships are totally underrepresented in the gaming community—but they decided to play it safe with some run of the mill PG-rated lesbian exhibitionism. I’ll give you the fact that they are unoriginal and stereotypical, but to say that they don’t have problems and they can’t grow as characters is off the mark. In Season One, Marjory treated Kasmeer like a delicate flower who couldn’t take care of herself and it got on Kasmeer’s nerves. At the beginning of Season 2 their roles were reversed, and they are starting to learn to trust each other to take care of themselves. One problem I have, is that Anet is rehashing the same storyline with Rox and Braham in Season 2, and, in my opinion, Rox doting on Braham and not wanting him to put himself in danger is being better executed because it isn’t mired by the same ultra-feminine/ultra-closed-off-loner stereotypes as Kas and Jory. Rox isn’t doting on Braham because she’s a stereotypical feminine caregiver; she’s doting on him because she’s lost people who were close to her before and doesn’t want history to repeat itself. Braham isn’t bitter about Rox treating him with kitten gloves, rather he tries to reason with her and seems to understand where she is coming from. It’s not that Kas and Jory are bad characters it’s just that I feel like I’ve read their story before. Now, if they had killed Majory off like they supposedly originally intended, that would have been a game changer. I would have liked to see that. It was a missed opportunity.

Theory: Anet trying to remove WP for Mounts?

M Steel.2574

I’ve always found mounts to be more cosmetic than utilitarian. They may provide a speed boost, but I think a lot of people like mounts for the same reasons they like pets or cool armor; it is a way to customize your character and gameplay and they are fun to collect. They can be overdone though and I agree with those who think it would be weird to see mounts in GW2, because the NPC’s don’t use them. The closest thing to a mount in game would probably be Taimi’s golem. That said, there are vehicle that exist within the game: charr war machines, flying ships, air balloons, etc. —Actually, I wouldn’t mind an air balloon novelty item that let you float around to take in the scenery of the game from a bird’s eye view, but that’s not the same thing as a mount.

Is it just me or is Taimi’s carefree Scarlet worship starting to be a problem. She has always been fascinated with Scarlet’s research but then we find the machine that supposedly caused Scarlet to go nuts and she runs inside without a thought about what could happen and it jealous that you got to see the eternal alchemy instead of herself. I could easily see the GMs making Taimi turn into Scarlet 2.0 before the end of the season and force the player to kill her. Anyone else thinking the same thing?

That will hardly happen, hell she has to be inside the golem to comply with age ratings of the game, as in a child cannot be put in danger.

^ That might also have something to do with the fact that she can hardly walk without the help of her golem. And I’m pretty sure it was implied that some children didn’t survive the Battle of Lion’s Arch.

in Living World

Posted by: M Steel.2574

M Steel.2574

Given that Trahearne is never actually present in the game world (he only ever shows up in cutscenes, unlike the racial leaders who can be found in their respective capitals) he could be killed off fairly easily, and any momentary confusion about this state of affairs for new players can be explained by pointing out that Living Story follows on from the Personal Story.

^ My sentiments exactly. Trahearne is the most likely choice because he isn’t present in the game world and it would be easiest to kill him off or corrupt him without disrupting the continuity of the game. Killing off the Pale Tree on the other hand, would require major changes to the Grove.

That said, vines have started cropping up all over Tyria with no explanation for characters who haven’t yet made it to Dry Top and are still playing through the original story, so I suppose it is possible that we could see major changes to the gaming environment even though they break immersion by messing with the game’s timeline.

Apatia’s death was brutal. Not only was it your fault she ended up in the state she was in, but you had to put her out of her misery. For a character that only showed up in your personal story a few times, her death was pretty devastating.

The only deaths in game I’ve care about so far are the ones related to the Order mentors.

I agree. The deaths of the Order Mentors were impactful, but the one that got me the most was Magister Sieran. Everytime I hear her say, “There was so much left that I wanted to see,” it hits me right in the feels.

M Steel.2574

Yeah I worry about this too, her Scarlet fangirling is probably her biggest weakness. I think it would seem unlikely for her to go full Scarlet on us though; more likely she will eventually do something in her blind enthusiasm that will have some kind of nasty consequences (for her or someone she respects) which will sober her up and get her to consider things with a bit more wisdom and empathy, I would think.

^ I like this idea. Although she showed very little remorse when the player character got zapped by Omadd’s machine trying to push her out of the way. Still, if she were to do something that led to another member of the Scooby Squad being seriously injured, such as Braham (since they seem pretty close), I could see her sobering a little.

Then again, I could also see her becoming even more reckless trying to make up for her mistake.

I also think it is important to note that Taimi is suffering from a degenerative disease. Part of her obsession with Scarlet and the Eternal Alchemy may come from a desire to improve her condition.

So what if Marjory... *spoilers*

Better not be any of the characters we have seen i the game yet.

Hmmm. I hadn’t really thought about it being a character that hasn’t been introduced yet. Perhaps they will do something like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, where part of the living story is finding the Krytan heir, either because Jennah is killed or Mordremoth targets the future heir.

The only reason I can see Jennah as a target for Mordremoth is because she is arguably the most diplomatic of the Tyrian leaders, having played an important role in the truce with the charr. If the player’s goal is to unite Tyria’s leaders, then Jennah would seem like the best place to start.

*spoilers* Jennah or Trahearne

in Living World

Posted by: M Steel.2574

M Steel.2574

I still think the most interesting target would be the PaleTree, but I just can’t see them killing or corrupting her because she is such a fundamental part of the Grove’s aesthetic. I assume that if the Pale Tree is corrupted her appearance will change to reflect the corruption. How is that going to work when there are still people rolling Sylvari who have not finished the main story? Trahearne seems more likely to me because corrupting him means altering the appearance of a single npc as opposed to an entire capital city. Still, striking at the heart of the Pale Tree would be the bolder move.

*spoiler* What is Jenna?

in Living World

Posted by: M Steel.2574

M Steel.2574

According to the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, “Jennah is an exceptionally powerful mesmer in her own right, able to single-handedly end the Ogre Revolt by creating a clone of an Elder Dragon convincing enough that its Branded minions withdrew, whilst simultaneously casting a glamour that held hundreds of humans and charr in place.” She’s arguably more powerful than Countess Anise and it is possible that she creates illusions of herself to take her place in risky situations.

Rox and Taimi

in Living World

Posted by: M Steel.2574

M Steel.2574

She’s an asura. Even worse, she’s an asuran progeny. They tend to be bossy little know-it-alls by nature. I don’t really see the player character reporting to Taimi, rather, I see the player character humoring little miss bossy pants because she’s a useful kid and recognizing that she’s more useful working with the team than on her own causing mischief. Let’s face it, Taimi is going to follow Scarlet’s trail whether the player character, Zojja, Destiny’s Edge 2.0, or Progeny Protective Services wants her to or not, so we might as well put her enthusiasm to good use. Plus, she actually does seem to be the foremost expert on Scarlet and her tech, so it makes sense to defer to her on occasion—always keeping in mind that she’s a bratty little progeny who, like most asura, doesn’t always think about the consequences of her actions.

That said, as far as the whole Braham/Rox/Taimi thing goes, I thing Rox has to take a step back and realize that Braham is a big norn and can make his own decisions. That’s why I chose to side with Braham and take him with me at Concordia, confident in the fact that I could pick up the slack if his injuries took a toll. I feel like Rox is smothering Braham a little since facing Scarlet and that her past has made her especially sensitive. Braham is her new family. She is very protective of him, because she is afraid she might lose him too.

It’s probably also worth noting that most charr don’t have to deal with bratty children the same way other races do, because they are sent to the fahrar and become the responsibility of their primus. This could help explain why Rox finds Taimi especially frustrating.

In fact, what is an artifact related to Kryta doing out all the way in the Shiverpeaks?

I got the impression that it was given to the Priory so that it would always be kept moving, so the identity of the heir would be kept safe.

Except it was being carried with other artifacts they apparently recently found as well. Besides, I can’t see Jennah just giving it to anyone outside of the Shining Blade for safekeeping (even within their ranks, she’d probably only trust it to the Countess).

So perhaps it was lost at some point and the Priory found it. Interesting.

But why hide the child?

Political scandal. Remember, there is still a class system in play.

My theory, if she is indeed pregnant, is that she became pregnant around the time of the Queen’s Jubilee (either before or after) and has been hiding the pregnancy while she recovers from Scarlet’s attack. If I understand the lore correctly, Jennah has been making less public appearances since the attack. The class issue may come into play, but I think it likely that Jennah will choose Logan as her consort regardless, leaving him with no claim to the throne, but allowing their child to be her heir.

However, the locket showing the portrait of someone unrelated to Jennah also remains a possibility.

But teasing aside, there has been speculation that Jennah might be pregnant in other forums—though she certainly isn’t showing yet if she is. That said, she’s a powerful mesmer and she hasn’t made many appearances since Scarlet’s attack.

I rolled my eyes when the locket was first mentioned. I don’t see how it picturing the current ruler makes it powerful. I could create a program for my smartphone that always displays the latest president but that wouldn’t make it more powerful than my desktop.

From what I understand, it doesn’t depict the current ruler. It depicts future rulers. It predicts who will ascend to the thrown after Jennah.

In fact, what is an artifact related to Kryta doing out all the way in the Shiverpeaks?

I got the impression that it was given to the Priory so that it would always be kept moving, so the identity of the heir would be kept safe.

I’m just curious. In Dry Top there is a woman named Dabnia—the woman, once engaged to a man who was too good for her. Is this a reference to something? Has this NPC shown up elsewhere before. I know it is probably just random NPC chatter, but I kind of want to know the story behind her signature line.

So apparently there’s a locket that shows the current heir to the Krytan throne. Any thoughts regarding the significance of the locket and who the heir might be? Has there been any mention of this locket before now?

Taimi better watch herself! (Spoilers)

The moment Taimi explained what Omadd’s machine was, I thought, “For the love of all Six and a bag of grits! Someone tie this half-pint heifer AND her golem down before she does something stupid!” And then I’m forced to watch the entire party turn their back to an Asuran kid with an unhealthy interest in Scarlet and the machine that drove her mad.

I’m surprised none of you heard me swearing at my monitor…

And they call us “bookah”…

^ This.

I think everyone else’s swearing may have drowned you out buddy. Where is Progeny Protective Services when you need them!?!

I could easily see the GMs making Taimi turn into Scarlet 2.0 before the end of the season and force the player to kill her. Anyone else thinking the same thing?

That’s what I’m most afraid of. When Taimi stepped into the machine I thought she was going to be corrupted or come out a vegetable, but I don’t think Anet is going to go there. It seems more likely that she will grow and mature as the story progresses—she is still a kid after all.

. . . then again, she’s an asuran kid, humility and learning from one’s mistakes isn’t exactly in their wheelhouse, so who knows.

What is Marjory afraid of? [Spoilerish]

I really don’t think Momma will have an issue with Jory’s sexuality beyond “but I want grandkids.” Assuming the writers pay attention to established lore, anyway, sigh. In Tyria there simply isn’t the stigma that many modern Earth inhabitants assign to homosexuality.

So it could be due to the noble issue, or because Jory knows how much raw emotion and reaction there is going to be, or simply that the writers needed to split up the team for a bit.

I agree. Given that we haven’t seen any homophobic sentiment in the game so far, it would be weird for Marjory’s mom to object to Kasmeer because she is a woman. It is far more likely that Marjory’s mom will object because Kasmeer is a noble, especially since Belinda didn’t skip a beat when meeting Majory’s girlfriend, but felt the need to point out that Kasmeer was a noble several times. I’m curious to know what exactly Marjory’s family has against the nobles, but I agree that it shouldn’t be the center of attention.

*spoilers* Jennah or Trahearne

It was implied, I think by either Kasmeer or Marjory, that we intend to unite all the leaders of Tyria against Mordremoth. Of all the leaders of Tyria, the most diplomatic seems to be Jennah (or the Pale Tree). If Mordremoth wanted to destabilize an alliance between the leaders of Tyria, killing Jennah would make more sense, but my money is still on Trahearne.

Also, if you talk to the Priory representative just after the events of Concordia you find out that the magical artifacts they were transporting have been leeched of magical energy, leaving them all inert except for the locket, which has been diminished, but is still functioning. The locket definitely seems significant.

Rox and Taimi

In the beginning of this LS, when Rox said she didn’t think Braham was weak, Taimi said “You thought it.”

“What?!”

“Oh, nothing.”

Not exact quotes, but close enough. I think that’s the root of the problem.

I think I remember that and it makes a lot of sense. Rox has taken it upon herself to be Braham’s caregiver after was injured. Given that she lost her warband she is being very protective of Braham—perhaps overly protective—now that she almost lost him too. Taimi thinks Braham can take care of himself and is ready to get back in the action. Rox thinks Braham should be taking it easy. That would certainly lead to some animosity.
